Utah Development Company began prospecting for coking coal in 1961 and Blackwater Mine became a reality in June 1967. Exploratory and develop- ment drilling has been a continuing effort and reserves have been assessed at several stages. Some of the history of exploration and reserves assessment is given and practices in drilling, sampling and testing are described, particularly in regard to objectives of drilling and reserves estimation. The current methods for calculation of reserves are described and some comment is made regarding use of the data in mine blending control and plant operation including correla- tion of results.

The above paper is an important contribution to the field of physicochemical studies in ferromanganese production. The authors are to be congratulated on the well planned and competently executed experimental work and on the interpretation of the data. Although the paper is essentially descriptive, the results lend themselves to thermodynamic interpretation (but in such a complex system as that studied this cannot be done rigorously), as well as to an examination of the probable reduction mechanisms that operate at various stages.

You will appreciate that, in the eighty odd years since the Institute was founded, the diversity of subjects has been very great. The paper will cover the basic reasons for alkaline leaching, a brief description of the circuit and the reasons for the flowsheet used. Changes made to the flowsheet, including the use of mechanical agitation of pachuca slurry, the use of oxygen and its effect on extraction, the use of lime and its effect on process economy, and the environment, will be described. A brief description of a unique semi-autogenous mill and future circuit changes will be included.

AGGLOMERATION U.S. 4,067,727 - In the sintering of a charge of iron oxide ore, a fuel and a flux on a travelling grate machine, the dust problem is minimized by providing a plurality of cooling zones and by directing heated dust-laden air from a first cooling zone to the sintering zone wherein the dust is filtered from the air by the material being sintered. Air from a further cooling zone can be exhausted directly to the atmosphere. Dust removal in the cooling zone is improved by using a purging zone in which higher pressure air agitates the dust in the sintered material. The Department of Energy is presently sponsoring the development of automated miner-bolter machines in an effort to increase production and productivity in the continuous room-and-pillar mining sections. This study is concerned with the production potential of these machines in three different mine layouts. The Underground Material Handling Simulation (UGMHS) computer model was utilized in the study. The effect of variables such as bolt installation delay, shuttle car capacity, and equipment availability on production are analyzed.

A computer model has been developed at Consolidation Coal Co.'s Central Engineering Dept. for preliminary economic evaluation of deep coal mine reserves. Since it was first formulated more than two years ago, the model has been used for the following purposes: (1) ranking studies of coal exploration projects, (2) marketing surveys, (3) preliminary sale and acquisition analysis of coal reserves, and (4) parametric analysis in conjunction with detailed feasibility studies.

"LOCATIONThe mine and mill are located in Lemoine township which is 20 miles directly south-east of the town of Chibougamau Quebec. Personnel live in Chibougamau and commute to the property over 33 miles of paved and gravel roads. Concentrates are trucked 13 miles to a railway siding on the line connecting Chibougamau and Quebec city.HISTORY Several companies explored the property before acquisition by Patino Mines (Quebec) Limited in 1973. Further exploration led to the discovery of a high grade copper-zinc orebody and the property was brought into production by the above company in 1976.ORE The ore contains 85% - 95% sulphides consisting of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and minor gold and silver. Argenti tetrahedrite, antimonial silver, native bismuth and galena are also pre sent in very minor quantities. Associated gangue minerals are quartz, carbonates and occasionally chlorite."

INTRODUCTION From 1967 to 1976 in the Federal Republic of Germany about loo km tunnels and 125 underground stations were constructed for municipal and commuter railways solely. Additional a remarkable amount of road tunnels and sewers were built. In 1977/78 a further 27 km railway tunnels, 3.5 km road tunnels and 65 km sewers and utility lines were under construction. This shows an enormous volume of tunnel construction work. In connection with this activity various technical research and development programmes have been carried out. They deal with nearly all fields of underground works as for example soil and ground exploration, excavating and lining techniques, calculation and last but not least waterproofing problems. It is impossible within the framework of this report to touch on all the problems. Therefore, only one problem area with its different aspects will be discussed: waterproofing systems and their last developments in Germany, especially, joint sealing with special consideration of the waterproofing of concrete segmental tunnel lining (1)

It has already been said and written many times that the construction of tunnels in urban areas has proved more and more indispensable, if not vital. The subsequent development of tunnelling for 15 or 20 years has brought large and sometimes spectacular improvements in the fiel of execution methods. But, particularly in urban areas, the difficulties to be overcome have been and still remain very important. As a matter of fact, most of big cities, have been settled near rivers or lakes; therefore the geological nature of the subsoil is soft ground and the level of ground water is high. As a consequence, tunnelling is often faced with many well-known difficulties and dangers issued from decompression or loosening of the ground, sometimes accompanied by a lowering of the water table. This may compromise the safety of the excavation itself and of the workers, and also cause settlements which many severely damage nearby buildings or structures. This is the reason why it is always necessary to work out specially adapted methods and even to develop new ones. In the mining industry and in new and expanding fields, such as electronics, nucleonics, and astronautics, a new type of manager has evolved. The name most generally used is project manager. His business is to create a product and the principal means through which he accomplishes this is project management. In this chapter, new information is the product of the project manager; as such the products, for which the computer methods described throughout this volume are designed, fall in the domain of project management. It has been the author's experience that project management is the management tool to effectively direct the information technology function within an organization. The purpose of this chapter is to describe project management and to identify and present a solution to the problems associated with project management in the development and application of computer methods in a minerals environment. Specifically, the problems to be addressed will center around: (1) recognition of the need for project management in terms of business-environmental factors and product characteristics, (2) formulation of a method of operation in terms of organization and implementation, and (3) application of project management to the minerals industry.

Predictions of coal cleaning plant performance from the washability data are traditionally used at the conceptual design stage of a coal preparation plant to confirm process selection. The development of computer programs which simulate the operation of a plant facilitates the optimization of product yield and quality, and ultimately proceeds. It is shown that the optimum is sensitive to changes in mine operations and market price structure. A computerized review of operations is thus recommended as an on-going activity .

INTRODUCTION Over the world, and especially in the United States, there is increasing dependence upon progressively lower grade ore deposits. These lower grade ores are frequently difficult or impossible to process due to complex mineral assemblages being very finely disseminated. Thus, many of the conventional mineral concentration methods are not applicable to these ores. For the last few decades, research in the more exotic mineral processing techniques has been conducted, both in universities and in governmental and industrial laboratories. Since its inception, the Institute of Mineral Research of Michigan Technological University (MTU) has devoted much of its attention to the problems of processing refractory, low grade ores. Recently a new flotation system was developed which shows promise of being applicable to a broad range of ore types. This process has been the subject of two allowed patent applications. This paper describes the details of such a flotation system which is potentially useful for treating ultrafine minerals. Some highlights of the testing program on a variety of iron ores and a group of lithium-bearing ores will be presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Both iron and lithium ore flotation treatments followed the same general procedures, with minor differences in pH and in reagent dosages. The method is rather simple, efficient and economical from the standpoint of recovery and the cost of reagents consumed.

The technology applied to shaft sinking has lagged far behind other construction activities. While surface oriented construction and mining have made great strides with new processes and equipment, the majority of shafts sunk currently still follow a drill, blast and muck-out cycle developed in the 16th century. Today, in 1979, the shaft sinking industry is in the midst of its own private industrial revolution. Millions of dollars are being spent annually by industry and government alike to spring the art of shaft sinking into the 20th century. The objective of this paper is to review a few of the newest mechanized schemes for shaft sinking. This is not a theoretical review, however, but a practical one, and deals only with hardware and projects which are currently on jobsites. Figure 1 shows the equipment. On the left is the 241SB 184, a 24 foot diameter blind shaft borer. This machine is currently at about 200 feet, constructing a coal mine shaft in Alabama. It is built and utilized in a manner similar to a tunnel borer. In the upper center is the 1211SR, a 12 foot diameter blind shaft reamer. This machine follows a 6 foot pre-drilled blind pilot hole, and is at work in Chicago. On the upper right is the 121BR, a powerful new blind drill. Just below it is the conical drill head for the 121BR which can utilize either carbide or standard disc cutters. At the center bottom is an expandable back reaming head which can be used to enlarge a drilled shaft up to a maximum of 16 feet diameter, or can be used to produce a shaft having several diameter changes. This equipment is also in use in Chicago.

Today numerous ores contain valuable minerals in finely disseminated form; and although the recovery of these fine mineral particles is generally exceedingly difficult, diminishing raw material resources necessitates the recovery of such mineral values. In many systems, the efficiency of recovering fine particles is still extremely low and often fine particles must be discarded as slimes. However, in recent years, various advances have taken place in the recovery of mineral particles in the very fine size range. In this paper, the background and performance of a number of processes for fine particle processing and separation are reviewed and discussed, particularly from the point of view of how fine particle recovery might be improved.

Coal cleat and faulting influence failure, gas release, and choice of preferred mining directions, locations, and sequences. Unfortunately soil and younger rock cover restrict direct mapping of these structures ahead of mining operations. Aerial photographs of cover contain indirect indications of concealed structures in arrays of linear photostructures. These arrays are commonly too complex for interpretation by simple visual inspection.Analytical techniques applicable to complex arrays are illustrated for a covered part of the Galilee Coal Basin, Queensland. These techniques are: optical determination of sets in arrays of photostructures; correlation of these sets with sub-surface structures; filtering of m-rays for particular sets; detection of anomalies associated with concealed structures in the density distributions of particular sets; fitting filtered arrays to trajectories; correlation of trajectories with the regional directional variations of concealed structures; contouring of ratios of sets to discriminate anomalies associated with concealed fractures and variations in the total and bed thicknesses of cover; kinematic and dynamic inference on the basis of fracture-trace angular and spatial relationships.

INTRODUCTION The measurement of displacements in soil or rock in the vicinity of underground openings provide valuable information for a better understanding of the behaviour of the structure. On the basis of systematic observations conclusions can be drawn concerning - safety of the opening in the various stages of excavation - effectiveness of the support measures - nature of the rock pressure to be expected - influence of the construction of the opening on neighbouring structures (settlements of foundations, underpassing other tunnels etc.) - comparison of theoretical predictions with the actual structural behaviour (1). Today there are several types of suitable instruments available that can be employed at reasonable costs for such investigations (2). The most important ones are the multiple point borehole extensometer, the inclinometer and the multiple point borehole deflectometer. As is well-known, the extensometer only measures the displacement component in the borehole axis, while the inclinometer and the deflectometer provide monitoring of rock mass movements normal to the borehole axis. In the following a new instrument is described, which has been given the name Extenso-Deflectometer ISETH. In this single piece of equipment certain features of the above-mentioned three types of borehole instruments are incorporated. it enables the measurement of all three components of the displacement vector at consecutive points along the borehole, the axis of which may have any direction in space. INTRODUCTION Measurement of certain data associated with nuclear testing necessitates the reception of waves at the instrument location which are unaffected by reflection off internal structures or tunnel surfaces. Therefore, in order to provide necessary facilities for the fielding of experiments in support of the underground nuclear testing program, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) commissioned a cost and feasibility evaluation pertaining to the design and construction of large underground cavities in Rainier Mesa. The effort included research into past experience pertaining to the excavation and support of large underground caverns, assessment of the geological conditions which exist in Rainier Mesa, preliminary design of the chambers and their rock support systems based upon the geological setting, development of mining plans for the excavation of the caverns, and estimation of the cost and manpower schedule to complete construction. This paper summarizes the results of the feasibility evaluation. The investigation was limited to modified hemispherical configurations ranging in size from 24.4 to 91.4 m (80 to 300 ft) in diameter. Two cavity support systems were considered. The first employs internally installed rockbolts as the means of primary rock support while the second involves the use of annular tendon galleries located above the chambers from which primary support members are introduced prior to general excavation. The internal support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 24.4, 36.6, 48.8, and 54.9 m (80, 120, 160, and 180 ft) while the external support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 54.9, 73.2, and 91.4 m (180, 240 and 300 ft).

Aspects and anomalies in the present Standard Specifications for Blended Cements which may have operated in Australia against the development of the greater use of Slag Blended Cements are noted. Estimates of slag and ash usage in Australia are given and the need for further research with local materials stressed.
