This Bureau of Mines report describes photolineaments obtained from stereoscopic examination of vertical aerial photographs and by the Ronchi grating study of aerial photoindex sheets. The photolineaments are compared with the trends of oriented fracture systems procured by measuring the compass direction of joints in bedrock. The relative reliability of the methods is shown, and the results are presented in graphical, tabular, and written form. Analyses of field measurements of strikes of bedrock joints in the project area indicate for the most part two intersecting sets of major joints oriented N 76° W - N 15° E, and N 57° W - N 27° E. The analyses of lineaments determined by stereoscopic examination of aerial photographs show dominant trends of lineament zones of weakness to be an average of N 65° W - N 20°E. Analysis of lineaments found by Ronchi grid viewing of aerial photoindex sheets indicate dominant trends of N 70° W - N 27° E. The three methods give similar findings and verify the work of previous authors. The Ronchi grid method is a useful guide, but it cannot be substituted for the two more painstaking methods.

Dump leaching and ,in-situ solution mining have received considerable attention during the past few years due to their apparent economic viability and minimal environmental impact. Solution mining actually dates back to the 17th century when leaching of copper ore was first reported. However-, modern day leaching didn't begin on a wide scale until the mid-1900's. In-situ mining for copper, nickel, salts, and oil shale is currently looking more attractive as the technology advances. Presently, about 15 percent of the copper production in the United States is from leaching operations at approximately 14 active sites, the largest of which are the waste dumps near the Bingham Copper Mine, Utah. To establish a common background, the discussion is centered around state-of-the-art conditions. For dump leaching, complications inherent to the physical conditions and chemical reactions such as channeling, porosity and permeability, sorption, air flow, rock alteration and pH control are discussed. Emphasis is made on those conditions which render solution recovery rates and solution mineral concentrations unpredictable. By illustrating typical and actual field conditions, the generally accepted flow theories for both dump leaching and in-situ solution mining, including rubblization, are presented. For in-situ mining, hydrogeologic techniques such as geophysical well logging, aquifer testing and digital computer modeling are also discussed. In 1975, the US produced 10 900 tons (12,000 st) of U3O8 from ores whose grade ranged from a low of 0.160% to a high of 0.196% U3O8. By the early 1980's if the current mining projects described here are allowed to go on stream, Australia will be able to produce at least 10 900 tons of U3O8 annually from ores whose grade ranges from a low of 0.150%to a high of 2.300%. As pointed out in the previous article, this initial rate of production could have been reached now-giving an immense boost to the depressed Australian economy. So, let's have a close look at current mining projects.

A Presidential Commission of Enquiry into the conservation of South Africa's coal resources was appointed in 1970. This Commission, in co-operation with the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, established a national inventory of South Africa's in situ and extractable resources and reserves of coal of various types and grades by several mining methods. South Africa's future demand for coal by all market sectors and the specifications of coal required, were also established by means of econometric models. A comparison of potential supply and anticipated demand indicated serious defi- ciencies of certain types of coal and the need for the conservation of others. This paper describes recommendations for alternate strategies for the optimum utilization of available resources. Con- sideration was given to various policies relating to pricing, exports, taxation and incentives, and to the possibility of the substitution of higher grades of coal by lower grades. The steps so far taken to develop a national coal policy in South Africa are described.

My presentation is from the viewpoint of the industrial mineral geologist, which is a relatively rare breed. Very few geologists become involved with industrial minerals for two reasons, I think: (1) Much of the industry utilizing non-metallic minerals has developed without the use of geologists in the begin¬ning and many of the management people, who generally derive from the processing plant supervision, tend to take raw materials for granted; and (2) non-metallic minerals are a very insignificant part of the curriculum of virtually all colleges granting a geology degree. One learns about the geology of industrial minerals by working with it. This "on-the-job-training" is probably best because it brings the geologist into close quarters with the production people and the production process. And the industrial minerals field has a distinctiveness when compared with the petroleum or metal mining field in that each deposit can yield a material differing in some aspect from that in any other or within the same deposit. The petroleum from a well in a given field will be similar to that from any other well, but a limestone on one side of a hill can differ signifi¬cantly in elemental composition, calcinability, soundness, specific gravity, or some other factor from the same ledge on the other side of the hill. This characteristic of almost certain variability creates problems sooner or later and provides for much of the employment of industrial mineral geologists. My job seen from the viewpoint of management is "Find us some rock we can extract and process at a profit." The industrial non-metallic geologist has much the same problems and approach as a detective. I do not mean the TV variety with the big mouths and the unfailing knack of spotting the wanted criminal immediately in a city of ten million people. Any real detective will tell you it takes leg-work, knowhow, and persistence to make a case. The same is true for the geologist who finds rock which can be quarried at a profit. For fully effective information to be obtained from exploratory drilling for coal, drilling programs should be planned systemati- cally in successive stages, on the basis of existing geological criteria and information collated during each stage. In this way, drilling can be executed with optimum economy, aided by auxiliary geophysical techniques wherever these may be appropriate. The object- ives of the programs must ultimately include an adequate assessment of mining conditions as well as thorough evaluation of coal quality. The first of these objectives is not always appreciated by both geologists and mining engineers engaged in supervising drilling pro- grams, often resulting in the need for more additional drilling and more expense than would otherwise be required. To achieve all of these objectives as effectively as possible, the drilling should be supervised by well qualified personnel experienced in working in a multi- dicipline, professional mining, geological and engineering team.

The tensile strength of agglomerate models due to capillary forces has been determined by computation of the exact surface profiles. Graphs showing tensile strength as a function of moisture content and contact angle me given for spheres in cubic arrangement. Another model of cones attached to cube faces, in cubic packing, provides a better representation of angular particle agglomerates. An algebraic formula approximating tensile strength as dependent on surface tension, particle size, moisture content, contact and cone angles was developed. The phenomenon of "capillary evaporation" due to high negative capillary pressures is explained and its influence on tensile strength of agglomerates is evaluated.

Oxides are important for use in the production of metals, ceramic hardware, paints, permanent magnets, magnetic recording tapes and many other uses. In some of these applications, particle morphology, degree of crystallinity, purity, and homogeneity are relatively insignificant, while for other uses, these same properties are of critical importance. Many conventional processes are based upon recovery of the oxides from aqueous solutions by processes which include neutralization, evaporation of solvent, and precipitation of a complex salt. Consequently, many of these techniques lead to oxides of low quality. There is a growing demand for oxides of high quality, i.e., materials with narrow particle size distribution, controlled particle morphology, high purity, few structural defects, and high degree of crystallinity and homogeneity. This demand has prompted industry to search for new approaches for the manufacture of these special materials. One new approach for preparing high quality oxides is hydrothermal precipitation. This process has been used for preparing simple oxides such as ZrO2; mixed oxides such as ZrO2-SiO2; and complex oxides such as BaTiO3. These oxides were prepared in a high state of purity with a high degree of crystallinity and., in many cases, without the addition of precipitants. Many impurities- that are normally precipitated by conventional methods such as neutralization present no problem since they remain in solution. Nature of the process and its applications are discussed in this article.

The optimal sequence of decisions on rates of production and cutoff grades is obtained by a dynamic programming model. The main parameters are : 1. the size of the deposit, average grades and grade distributions, 2. the operating costs of mining and concentration, 3. the investments in mine and mill, 4. the smelter charge, 5. the price(s) of the metal, 6. the recovery and the grade of the concentrate, 7. the rate of interest, 8. the taxation formulae, 9. the upper limit to rate and the rate interval and 10. the upper and lower limits to cutoff and the cutoff interval. Single-charge cratering tests can provide a direct measure of the powder factor necessary for achieving a desired effect in conventional blasting. If a desired blast effect, such as fragmentation or mound velocity, is produced by a single point-charge at a particular scaled depth of burial, then the cube of the reciprocal of that scaled depth is the appropriate powder factor for duplicating the effect in a conventional array of blast holes. "AbstractA number of plant-scale cyanidation tests were carried out in an attempt to uncover the causes of fluctuations in gold recovery efficiency. Computer analysis of the results verified that the treatment of reclaimed waste rock material along with normal run-of-mine ore was having an adverse effect on metallurgical efficiency. Mineralogical examinations showed that the free gold particles in the dump material were heavily tarnished or coated (predominantly by hydrated iron oxide), accounting for the lower recoveries. The indications were that the effect could be counteracted somewhat by using higher than normal cyanide and lime reagent concentrations and adequate leaching times. Analysis of the results showed further that leach pulp density was an important operating parameter affecting extraction efficiency. The combustible volatile matter in coal mine roadway dusts (CVM) has been determined using x-ray backscatter techniques. The correlation between x-ray and chemical techniques is reasonably good for the 92 samples from collieries on the Bulli seam, and the maximum error expected at the maximum level of 11· 5 weight per cent CVM permitted in the N.S.W. Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended, is about ± 2·5 weight per cent. This x-ray technique can be used only when the combustible volatile content of the coal matter (cvm) varies within a limited range, and a separate calibration is required for each coal seam.Portable equipment based on a radioisotope x-ray source ahd digital ratemeter makes possible simple and rapid analysis, and with adaptation to use in coal mines should lead to much more comprehensive testing- ofroadways and hence improved overall prevention of coal dust explosions.

The important role of pit slope design in the overall economics of open-pit mining ventures has long been recognized and well documented.1 2 Any economic analysis of a pit slope design must reflect the trade-off between the benefits and the increased risk of slope failure inherent in steeper slope angles. The conventional practice in pit slope design is based on the factor of safety analysis.' The approach uses average values to arrive at a deterministic solution to slope stability. Past analyses based on this approach generally have had several drawbacks: 1. The risk from slope failure could not be quantified. 2. Only relatively simple pit wall geometries were considered. 3. The analyses were performed solely for the benefits of steeper slopes, seldom discussing the potential costs of slope failures. 4. Analyses were seldom considered in a year-by-year mine planning context. Recognizing that average values do not reflect the uncertainty in geomechanical parameters, a probabilistic philosophy to slope design has evolved. 4,5 However, this approach had not been fully developed to include complex slope geometries and mine planning consideration. In order to develop an integrated, pit slope design procedure, a research project was initiated at the University of Arizona during 1973 in conjunction with the Canada Center for Mineral and Energy Teleology. This research resulted in the development of a probabilistic design procedure. The remainder of this paper gives an overview of the probabilistic design procedure and a discussion of the requirements for the benefit-cost analysis of a pit slope design. Finally, the results of a case study undertaken at an operating mine are given.

In aqueous solution, an oxide surface is considered to consist of positively charged surface sites, MOH, neutral surface sites MOH, and negatively charged surface sites MO-. From the mass action law, equations for the distribution of these sites have been derived in terms of the hydrogen ion concentration in solution and the point of zero charge of the oxide. Experiments on the flotation of futile were carried out with sulfonates and amines which are collectors that physisorb, and with oleate, which is a collector that chemisorbs. Flotation response was found to correlate with the site distribution model. A similar correlation was found with published data on iron oxide potation.

In this report, the application of the Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) to a mine located in Ohio using a large stripping dragline, and truck and front-end loader (FEL) is described. The specific objective of the study is to demonstrate the application of the simulator to mine planning and coal production. On the basis of the simulations, it was concluded that the production from the haulback operation should be increased to accommodate improvements in both the stripping dragline's availability and mean cycle time. Several alternatives were studied for the best use of equipment if the present operating parameters could not be improved upon. No economic analysis of these proposals were made.

Raise boring of mine ventilation shafts in many cases offers a lower cost and higher speed method of construction in comparison to conventional shaft sinking. Where underground access is available for raise boring the potential savings indicate that raise boring should be considered as an alternative to other methods. Raise boring machines are currently in use which have the capability for reaming shafts up to twenty feet in diameter, depending on the strata and depth. These large capacity machines make it possible to consider raise bored shafts for moving large volumes of air. Although we will consider here only ventilation shafts, raise boring should also be considered for men and material shafts. When the mine planner has determined the volume of air required through a shaft at a particular location he is faced with the problem of selecting the shaft size. The principal factors in optimizing the shaft size are the construction costs for the shaft 'and the power cost to move the air through the shaft. The larger diameter the' shaft is the more it costs to construct, but for a given volume of air the power required (cost) becomes lower as the diameter increases. The construction cost is paid only once, when the shaft is constructed. The power costs, however, are paid throughout the life of the shaft. Methods of optimizing air shaft size found in the literature (References 1 and 2) amortize the construction cost and include it in the average annual cost of operating the airshaft. These methods derive a formula for the average annual cost vs. shaft size and de-rive the formula to compute the optimum size for a given air flow rate. As the main source of indigineous energy, coal has a big role to play in the development of national economy of India. Nationalization of the coal mining has brought the entire industry under the unit control of the Central Government following which an ambitious plan for increasing the coal production in the next few five year plans has been undertaken. In order to achieve best all round results, economy-mathematical models of Planning the total system, right from the highest to lowest hierarchial levels of decision making, have been proposed through a Global Model which is detailed in Local Models in stages right up to a mine. Optimum obtained by computer solution of the models would provide basis for objective decision making in the fields of selection of optimum plan for developing the industry, the coal fields and the mines with construction and/or reconstruction of mines, capacity optimization of enterprises and mines therein. Different types of Models and the optimization processes are presented.

The Department of Mines Tasmania employs a Drilling Section for specialised drilling re- quired by government and semi-government bodies. The section has a complement of nine crews oper- ating auger, cable tool, rotary and diamond drilling plants. For some years the Department has been involved in site investigation drilling of the Derwent River. The experience gained indicated that drilling methods should be altered. In 1976 an urgent programme was requested and the opportunity was taken to solve many problems associated with previous investigations. Equipment and methods are discussed in detail. The improved technique contributed to the suc- cessful completion of the Phase 1 site investi- Gation.
