The potash mine of the International Minerals and Chemical Corp. is about 18 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in sec 1 and 12, T 22 S, R 29 E, N.M.P.M. Potash is produced from two zones in the Salado formation of late Permian age. The lower zone, consisting of a mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), lies at a depth of about 900 ft, and the upper zone, in which the principal potassium mineral is langbeinite (K2S04.2MgS0d), lies at a depth of about 800 ft. Because of the plastic nature of the material, fractures in the Salado formation are extremely rare and have been noted only on the 800 ft level of the International mine. The open fracture described below is almost unique. Only one other open fracture has been noted, and it was on a working face in the same general area as the one described, but was destroyed before the writer had a chance to examine it. According to J. E. Tong, foreman on the 800 level, this fracture was similar to, but smaller than, the one herein described.

Few factors have had more influence in maintaining the strength and stability of the United States than our persistent habit of providing .checks and balances to the dynamic powers of free enterprise on the one hand and to the controls and guidance exercised by the State on the other. .Indeed, it is this same concern for matching forces against each other that has given our republic its ability -to preserve a democratic basis of life for its citizens, and yet maintain a ,government that is able to protect the rights of all and to resist and minimize the danger of excessive concentration of authority. Our current efforts to clarify the nation's mineral policies and to define more clearly the role that the governmental agencies should play in conjunction with the functions of private -enterprise again reveal the desirability and advantages of maintaining our traditional controls. At times, the equilibrium has been temporarily disturbed by too great enthusiasm for one or the other of these basic concepts. Sooner or later, however, the balance has been restored by the healthy opposition that is always created by excesses of one sort. At the current stage in our history, the swing toward undue enlargement of the powers of the State seems to have gone dangerously far and we would be untrue 'to our traditional behavior if the group that must demonstrate the virtues of free enterprise did not rally to its support with the utmost earnestness.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. This circular describes four modern change houses of the Lake Superior iron - ore district , all conceived and constructed since 1937. The oldest change house described herein was constructed and occupied in 1938 , yet it embodies the modern improvement of air - conditioning . The purpose of this report is to describe and illustrate improvements with regard to health and safety features combined in the construction , arrangement , ventilation , heating ,lighting , and other features , with the aid of photographs , sketches , and diagrams . The modern change house is a fire - resistant structure in which intermingling of men in mine clothes and men in street clothes , hazardous dust , heat and humidity , crowding , poor lighting , slippery and muddy floors , and inadequate facilities for clothes and for bathing have been largely eliminated . The miner coming off shift at a modern mine no longer faces the elements when he gets off the cage . He travels through a tunnel to the change house , where he is cooled gradually by room temperatures as he passes from the mineclothes section and shower room to the street - clothes room . He is assured of dry clothes when he is ready for them . No longer is he sent out of the change house into a muddy yard to drive away as best he can . The modern change house has an improved parking lot and graveled or concreted walkways from it to the change house entrances .

"Magnetite iron deposits on Tolstoi Mountain were examined as part of the investigations by the Bureau of Mines of iron and copper ores on Prince of Wales Island. The Tolstoi Mountain project was a part of a program for investigating mineral deposits in Alaska, under the general supervision of R. S. Sanford, acting branch chief.A preliminary examination was made by S. P. Holt, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in company with John Reed, L. A. Warner, and W. S. Twenhofel of the Federal Geological Survey, on July 14, l943. Three samples were taken, rough estimates were made, and it was proposed that the area be mapped, topographically and geologically,. Dip-needle work was added to the program, and it was decided that, should results warrant, the deposits would be diamond-drilled.From March 26 to May 28, 1944, the deposits were examined thoroughly by Bureau of Mines personnel under the direction of the author. Thirty-two acres were mapped with contour intervals of 10 feet, grids were established covering the principal outcrops, over 1,500 dip-needle readings were secured, and the magnetite bodies were outlined. Additional information was gathered by trench inch and channel-sampling, 600 linear feet of trench being dug and 32 channel samples being cut. Finally, the mapped area was checked for nonoutcropping deposits by taking dip-needle readings at 10-foot intervals along the traverse lines, creeks, trails, and all outstanding topographical features. This re-connaissance work gave sufficient coverage of the 32 acres to eliminate the possibility of further magnetite bodies of any consequence remaining undiscovered.Acknowledgment is made to Nile Johannsen, assayer, Territorial Department of Mines, Ketchfkan, Alaska, for determination of samples.The deposits are on Prince of Wales Island in Southeastern Alaska near Tolstoi Pay, a deep-water indentation at the northwest and of Kasdan Peninsula. The physical features are shown on figures 1 and 2 and the location of the deposition figure 3. Old workings were found on the west side of Tolstoi Mountain; between elevations of 650 and 1,150 feet, at distances of 3/4 to 1-1/4 miles from the east shore of Tolstoi Bay.Access to the area is over a brushed foot trail built by the Bureau of Mines. Topography would permit construction of either surface or aerial tramways at moderate cost but would make road building expensive. Deep-water navigation, permitting inexpensive water transportation, is possible the year around.Kasaan Peninsula is an area of moderate relief, being considerably less rugged than the mainland to the east. Most of the mountains and ridges are less than 2,500 feet in height and show evidence of having been covered by the ice cap of the Pleistocene age. Rock exposures below elevations of 2,000 feet are limited, as extensive overburden 2 to 20 feet deep covers the greater part of the peninsula."

The principal goal of the Oil-Shale Mining Division is to develop the most economical methods and practices for mining oil shale. Experimental work in the mine has not progressed far enough to conduct full-scale breaking tests; therefore, mining season - to October 31, 1945, has been confined largely to problems connected with drilling cost oil shale. Calculations have indicated that commercial production will result in breaking the oil shale; the largest individual turn will be for drilling. This paper is a report on the progress of phase two of drilling research to date; it outlines the development of a successful hard-surfaced rock bit for drilling oil shale.

Information relative to the explosibility of acetylene at elevated pressures and means of handling acetylene safely under these conditions is of considerable interest at present. American practice limits the pressure at which acetylene may be generated and distributed to poiIits of' use. The pressure in portable acetylene generators is 15 pounds per square inch gage. Tests made by the Bureau of Mines have shown that 15 pounds per square inch gage is too high to prevent explosiofiS of gaseous acetylene in the absence of air; in fact, dry acetylene gai can be exploded at pressures greater than 5.9 pounds per square inch gage. The Bureau has been interested in the explosibility of acetylene for many years because of its continued: use for illumination in many metal mines and its general use in cutting 1illd~--eldifigoperations in the mining maus-try.

Two processes are available for the production of synthetic fuels from coal high-pressure hydrogenation and the carbon monoxide-hydrogen synthe- sis. This paper presents some ideas and new developments in coal hydrogen- ation that have been incorporated in an estimate for the production of 30,000 barrels per day of liquid fuels, mainly gasoline. A few comparisons of the processes will be helpful before discussion of the details of pro- posed improvements in the hydrogenation process. The principle of the high-pressure hydrogenation process ie the addi- tion of hydrogen at pressurea in the range of 3,000 to 10,000 p.s.i. to coal at elevated temperature and with the help of catalysts. On the other hand, the principle in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is the complete break-down of coal into a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, followed by the catalytic combination of these two gasse into hydrocarbons or suitable catalysts. For the synthesis, moderately elevated pressures of about 350 p.8.1. will bo used in the immediate future, although it can be carried on at atmosphoric pressure with certain catalysts. The products of these two processes using coal as raw material are almost as differont as hydrocarbons can be. The products of the high-pres- sure hydrogenation of coal reflect the original constitution of the coal. They are, therefore, rich in ring compounds, both aromatic and naphthenic, but, due to the action of highly comprcesed hydrogen and catalyst, are satu- rated and very stable. These constituents give the gasoline a high octane number and excellent rich-mixture performance, combined with good gum and storage stability. Therefore, this gasoline is suitable for aviation gaso- line or base stock. The Diesel fuel can be hydrogenated to a centane number of 45 or higher, which is entirely satisfactory for operating normal Diesel

Since the return of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines to normal peacetime functions following World War II, a coordinated program of oil and gas development and production research has been in prog- ress, and the importance of the problems has been evaluated so that the Bureau can render greater service to the oil and gas industry. Among the problems associated with development and production research, those concerned with efficient utilization of the Nation's reserves of hydro- carbons contained in gas-condensate type reservoirs continue to receive major emphasis. For a number of years an important part of the Bureau's work has been the study of two pressing problems associated with production from such reservoirs; first; an investigation of fluid properties, and the second, finding a means of controlling corrosion. Studies of the characteristics of gas-condensate fluids have resulted in the publication of a number of reports, which cover a broad field. In general they deal with subjects such as the properties of a fluid from a well; development of research equipment, means of combatting corrosion, and the many aspects of gas-condensate engineering. To provide experimental data on relative liquid and gas volumes and critical pressures and temperatures, a windowed cell was constructed that permits ob- servation of the fluid phase while making the tests. Experimentation in the field on the use of inhibitors to control corro- sion of equipment in gas-condensate wells has disclosed that solutions of chromate are effective retardants of corrosion. Engineering field studies of the Carthage and New Hope gas-condensate fields are in progress, and reports on the Sheridan and Lake Creek fields have been completed. "Recently4/ it was shown that the total energy method5/ of spectrochemical analysis is suitable for the quantitative estimation of many of the elements of which ores are composed. It was shown how this method can be applied to the determination of germanium, tin, and lead. Continuing this work, the present report deals with analyses for beryllium, zinc, cadmium, and indium.There are three basic problems in these investigations. The first is to study the influence of those elements that make up the greater part of an ore sample on the spectral-line intensities of the elements for which analyses are being made, the latter generally being the minor constituents. The second is to develop proper methods for the preparation of standard spectrographic curves. Finally, we are concerned with improvement in equipment and procedure, so that greater accuracy can be achieved.As discussed previously, it is better to study as groups those elements that belong to the same group in the periodic table because their spectra are similar. Beryllium, zinc, and cadmium are thus related. Indium was included in this work because it is associated with zinc and cadmium in zinc ores.The authors wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance of the staff of the Bureau of Mines Analytical Laboratory who made the chemical analyses and supplied the ore samples used in this work.A brief description of the procedures followed in making the standard curves and analyses is given below; a detailed discussion will be found in an earlier paper.6/Basically, the procedure for determining a standard curve consists of two parts: (1) Choosing a suitable line in the spectrum of the element to be determined and (2) determining the variation in the intensity of this line with the amount of the element burned in the arc."

"The Union Copper mine is in the Gold Hill district, Rowan and Cabarrus Counties, N. C.The mine was discovered in 1799 and first worked as a gold mine; but copper was encountered at depth, and the property became an important producer of copper. It is estimated that the mine produced 5,000,000 pounds of copper before operations were discontinued in 1907.As part of the strategic minerals program, the Bureau of Mines conducted a development project on the property from July 1943 to November 1943. Eight diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,500 linear feet, were drilled to delineate the ore body. Analyses of 205 core samples were made.Tabulations of sample analyses and drill-hole logs are presented in this report.The project work embodied in this report was under the immediate supervision of Austin B. Clayton, project engineer, and the general supervision of H. B. Ewoldt, district engineer for North Carolina and Tennessee. The preliminary report, written by Austin B. Clayton, was revised and the various figures redrawn for publication by T. J. Ballard under the general supervision of M. H. Kline, chief, Raleigh Branch, Mining Division.Acknowledgment is due the Metallurgical Branch for analytical determinations of the samples.The mine property is 1.5 miles southwest of the village of Gold. The attorneys for the owners are Neidle & Taylor, 6 East 45th Street, New York City.The Union Copper mine is in the Cold Hill mining district of North Carolina where gold was first discovered in 1799. The upper parts of the veins in the district were first worked for gold; however, the increase in the sulfide content of the veins with depth rendered the amalgamation process for gold recovery ineffective, and the mines were closed.The period of greatest activity at the Union Copper mine was from 1899 to 1906. At an earlier period the oxidized and leached part of the lode near the surface was mined from a working known as the ""big cut,"" the reported yield of which was $300,000 in gold.3/ The mine has not been operated since 1907.J. T. Pardee3/ lists the probable value of the production of the Union Copper mine as $1,050,000, of which about $675,000 was the value of some 5,000,000 pounds of copper produced."

"The W. E. Dunkle mine, sometimes called the Costello Creek coal mine, is 8 miles N. 20° W. of Colorado Station on the Alaska Railroad. The presence of coal in this area has been known since the district was extensively pros¬pected for gold between 1911 and 1915. At that time, coal from this deposit was used by miners for blacksmithing. The increased demand for coal resulting from government defense projects in Alaska led to exploitation of this deposit in 1941.The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska was responsible for establishment by the Army of the Coal Procurement Section of its Alaska Department. It proposed to investigate the deposits and to expedite production from the Alaskan coal fields. The Bureau of Mines closely cooperated in this program.The quality of the Dunkle coal and the favorable location of the deposit caused it to be one of the properties chosen for investigation under a joint Army-Bureau of Mines-Geological Survey program.During July 1943, the coal area in the immediate vicinity of Costello Creek was geologically and topographically mapped. by Clyde Wahrhaftig and Jacob Freedman, geologists, U. S. Geological Survey. F. A. Rutledge, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines examined the property July 18 to 22, 1943, and a project of trenching, diamond drilling, and sampling was initiated on August 4, 1943. During the project Clyde Wahrhaftig remained at the Dunkle mine to interprets drill cores and assist the author in planning the explora¬tory program. The project was completed October 7, 1943.Field investigations were under the general direction of R. S. Sanford, acting chief, Alaska Branch, Mining Division. Coal analyses were made by Maurice L. Sharp, coal analyst for the Alaska Railroad.Special mention is made of the cooperation and assistance received from Clyde Wahrhaftig, geologist, U. S. It is situated within the Third Judicial Division, headquarters of which is Valdez, Alaska. The area is situated approximately at latitude 63° 15' N. and longitude 149° 30' W. and is connected with the Alaska Railroad at Colorado Station by an 11-mile gravel road that is passable throughout the year. This road is maintained by the Alaska Road Commission. A private telephone line to Colorado Station connects with the telephone and telegraph service of the Alaskan Railroad.The passenger rate from Anchorage, Alaska, to Colorado station is $12.10. Freight rates are $1.60 a hundred pounds for heavy machinery and $2.66 a hundred pounds for first-class freight.The Costello Creek coal basin is in an area of low relief and has been dissected by numerous creeks flowing down the south flank of the Alaska Range. The Dunkle coal mine is on Coal Creek, a small tributary of Camp Creek, 1,000 feet from their junction. About 700 feet below this junction, Camp Creek joins Costello Creek, which in turn empties into Bull River 1/2 mile above the latter's confluence with the West Fork of the Chulitna River. "INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring 1946 several high-grade limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Bureau of Mines. This report presents the data obtained from investigation of the Sauk Mountain deposits in east-central Skagit County, Washington.The investigation consisted of transit and topcgraphic surveys and sampling. The areas selected for sampling were first cleaned by blasting; channel samples up to 40 pounds were cut where practical. Chip samples averaging 30 pounds were taken where channel samples could not be cut. A total of 21 samples in the Sauk Mountain area were taken and. analysed. The locations of the samples are shown in figures 2 and 4, and the analyses are listed in tables 1 and 2. This investigation is a part of a long-range program of general investigation of mineral resources for future industrial development of the Pacific Northwest. The Sauk Mountain deposits were investigated for the purpose of disclosing now sources of high-purity limestone, which could be mined and shipped at low cost to Seattle and other industrial cities in the Pacific Northwest."

"FOREWORDIn the second year of World War II, the petroleum industry in California was taxed to near capacity to satisfy the expanded war demand for petroleum products, particularly fuel oil. With discoveries of crude oil in California declining and known reserves being depleted rapidly, conditions appeared to warrant study of the possibilities of utilizing the outcropping bituminous sandstone deposits in California for obtaining new sources of oil if the war should he prolonged. At conferences in Washington, D. C., with members of the Petroleum Administration for War and the Geological Survey, Bureau of Mines engineers emphasized the importance of determining the extent of those outcropping deposits of oil-impregnated rocks and of developing a practical process for commercial recovery of the contained bitumen to assure, if necessary, a supplementary supply of fuels. The desirability of such a study was recognized, and in July 1943 the Petroleum Field Office of the Bureau of Mines at San Francisco, Calif., in cooperation with the Geological Survey and the Petroleum Administration for War, initiated a study of the bituminouss sandstone problem. It was agreed that all mapping and geological work in connection with the study would be done by the Geological Survey, all engineering studies in developing a process for extracting the oil would be carried out, by the Bureau of Mines, and that the Petroleum Administration for War would aid in final adoption of the results in the field if circumstances warranted such action.Deposits of bituminous sandstones in California occur principally in the immediate region of the Coast Range mountains, notably at Pt. Arena, in Mendocino County, about 110 miles north of San Francisco; near Santa Cruz, in Santa Cruz County; in the Edna area in San Luis Obispo County; in the Sisquoc area in Santa Barbara County; and in the Ojai and Santa Clara Valleys in Ventura County. 4/ In addition oil-bearing sands outcrop near McKittrick and Maricopa, in western Kern County, and along the east edge of the Kern River oil field. Among the several prominent deposits of these source materials, those occurring near the cities of Santa Cruz and San Luis Obispo, and the town of Sisquoc are the largess."

The use of safe equipment, safeguards, and safe practices in the mining and allied industries should reduce injuries and improve accident experience. The object of this report is to give to the mining industry, especially metal mining, a graphic pictorial description of some of the safeguards, equipment, and practices used and followed in the iron-ore mines of the Lake Superior district. Some of the subject material has been in use or has been established for many years, and some is relatively new. Some of the equipment was purchased commercially, and some was designed by the company employees and constructed in the mine shops. The photographs were taken by the personnel of the Health and Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines, primarily for use in the Metal-Mine Accident-Prevention Course of the Bureau of Mines. In general, they are arranged under the following headings or subjects: 1. Accident statistics. 2. Support of ground. 3. Hoisting and haulage. 4. Explosives. 5. Fires, gases, and ventilation.

Several processes for the production of ultra-clean coal for electrode carbon were developed in Germany prior to and during World War II . These processes have been investigated since the end of the war by the British and U. S. Government missions . As the reports of the investigations are not readily available to the public , it is the purpose of this paper to present the information which has been obtained regarding the methods by which ultraclean coal was produced . Almost all the ultra-clean coal was used in the manufacture of electrodes for the production of aluminum and magnesium . Standard raw materials for making these electrodes are pitch coke and petroleum coke , which are nearly ashless . The inclusion of ash in the electrode carbon results in lowered efficiency and impure metal from the reduction process . Petroleum coke and pitch coke were in very short supply in Germany during the war , so that it was necessary to augment the supply with carbon produced from coal . In the emergency , methods were developed to clean coal which had never before been economically feasible . However , a demand for nearly ash-free coal might develop in the United States if a shortage of petroleum coke were to occur at the same time as a strong demand for light metals . Other uses of ultraclean coal are in direct hydrogenation of coal , in production of activated carbon, and for special fuels . Specifications for electrode carbon are rather severe owing to the necessity for producing pure metal . Maximum amounts of impurities allowable in American practice are as follows : Total ash , 1.0 percent ( in finished coke , 0.7 percent ) Silica , 0.08 percent Ca or Na, or their sum , 0.12 percent Sulfur , 2.0 percent Ba , Ni , Cr , Mn , Co , and V are objectionable in very small amounts . The most important process for ultra cleaning of coal in Germany was froth flotation . Froth flotation had been used widely there to process washery -water sludges and to recover coking coal from high - ash fines . Its use was indicated , therefore , when the demand for ultra low-ash coal arose . In two plants the coal cleaned by froth flotation was treated with acid or caustic to lower further the ash content . Another process used on an industrial scale was that of dissolving the coal substance in the middle oil from direct hydrogenation of coal under controlled pressure and temperature . The resulting paste was heated, filtered , and the oil distilled off . The residue was a low-ash organic material that could be carbonized for electrode carbon or could be hydrogenated directly . Several other processes had been developed to the laboratory or pilot - plant stage but had never been used on a commercial scale . These processes included cleaning by centrifugal action , cleaning by electrostatic action , and cleaning by forming a paste with oil in water . The coal-preparation plants at the Carl Alexander mine , Augusta Viktoria mine , and Kőenigin Elisabeth mine are described in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7389 : " Coal Preparation Practice in Western Germany" , by Thomas . Fraser and M. G. Driessen . Most of the special equipment used at these plants is described in the above publication .

The diamond-drill method was tried at the site selected for driving a 5- by 6 -foot air shaft at the east end of the Bellefonte mine . This method of sinking consisted , first , of drilling a 5-3/4 -inch-diameter cut hole from the surface , then drilling parallel 1.5 - inch ( EX ) holes around it at appropriate distances for a balanced blasting round . The cut hole was not charged with explosive but served as a relief chamber for the incipient expansion of the ground broken by. blasting the surrounding 1.5 - inch holes . The length of each hole was 236 feet , which was the finished depth of the shaft . The nature of the work in the air shaft was largely experimental , and many difficulties arising from the lack of special equipment and proper technique for precise alinement of the drill holes caused expensive delays before they could be overcome . Drilling the 5-3 /4 - inch hole , which was impeded by frequent core blocks in the core barrel , required 10 shifts . average advance per shift for an EX hole was about 150 feet . The The holes were charged and fired from the surface . The length of the section blasted in one cycle was 10 feet . Blasting progressed from the bottom of the shaft upward . The broken stone dropped into a chute , from which it was drawn into cars on the haulage level . The Bellefonte mine is an underground limestone mine.3/ The primary objective in undertaking the research on shaft sinking by diamond drilling was to perfect a method for driving connections between levels of the mine .
