MAGNETITE is the important iron ore of New Jersey although bog ore, limonite and red hematite were mined in sizable quantity early in the state's min-ing history. The deposits of mag-netite are found in the Highland area in the northern part of the state. These ores outcrop a broad belt 20 miles wide, extending in a northeasterly direction from Phil-lipsburg, on the Delaware River, to Greenwood Lake, at the southern boundary of the state of New York, a distance of 60 miles. The area in which the magnetite is found (see map, Fig. 1) contains 1200 square miles and the center of the area is at Dover, 40 miles west of New York City. In the general area are found 18 parallel ranges or lines of ore deposits. These ranges may be re-garded as mineralized zones in which occur orebodies that are rich enough in magnetite to war-rant mining. Usually a number of the orebodies lie one above the other in the same plane, all dipping and pitching in the same direction. Within the ranges, there may be several parallel orebodies of work-able size. The average strike of the orebodies is N.41° 30' E., with an average dip of 55° southeast and an average pitch of 15 ° to the northeast. Orebodies suitable for mining range from 6 to 100 ft. wide, as measured from foot wall to hanging wall. Their heights, as measured on the dip and normal to the long axis of the orebody, vary from 200 to 3,000 ft. The length along the pitch has never been determined by mining, al-though several of the orebodies have been worked to lengths of 10,000 ft. The grade of the ore as mined today varies from 30 to 60 per cent iron, and the gangue min-erals are chiefly silica, alumina, magnesia, lime and phosphorus.

Fires in heavily timbered mines are disastrous, involving danger to both life and property. Some mines have been completely ruined or so heavily damaged that reopening them would not pay. Though few mines are entirely free from danger of fire, the risk is minimized by proper care and good design of plant. The Tintic Standard mine is at Dividend, Utah, in the famous Tintic mining district, about 60 miles south of Salt Lake City. The development of the mine was begun in 1907 by the late Mr. E. J. Raddatz and his associates. From the beginning, the work was hampered by high rock temperatures and the presence of high concentrations of rock gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Development work was carried on with great perseverance for nine years, and resulted in the discovery of ore in 1916. The total production of the Tintic Standard mine to Jan. 1, 1936, amounted to 1,664,388 tons of ore, having a gross value of $61,996,719. General Layout of the Mine The No. 2 shaft, which is the main working shaft of the Tintic Standard, is within the main orebody and is connected with the five other shafts. Their respective positions with respect to the No. 2 shaft are as follows: North Lily, 2770 ft. northwest with drift connections on the 700 and 900-ft. levels; No. 3 shaft, 670 ft. east connected through the 700-ft. level; Eureka Standard, 4550 ft. south, connected on the 900-ft. level; No. 1 shaft, 1470 ft. southwest, with connecting drifts on the 900 and 1250-ft. levels; Eureka Lilly, 2000 ft. southwest, with connecting drift and raise through the 1250-ft. level. The Tintic Standard orebody consists essentially of one continuous oreshoot extending from the 600-ft. level to the 1450-ft. level, with a cross-sectional area of approximately 70,000 sq. ft. at both top and bottom, reaching a maximum area of 215,000 sq. ft. between the 1100

Recent developments related to petroleum engineering discussed in this paper are: 1. Drilling wells in with oil or the use of chemical compounds or (Imud solvents" for removing rotary mud from wells in order to increase or make possible oil production. 2. Comparison of results of electrical logging methods in locating water, as shown in a recent test on a well in the Los Angeles Basin. 3. A new method for logging formations through casing, known as the Stratagraph. Drilling Wells in with Oil or the Use of Chemical Compounds or Mud Solvents During the time that the California fields showed high gas pressures, the pressure of the gas within the formation was sufficiently great to break down the mud wall or cake formed while the well was drilling. That this did not always occur was demonstrated by the fact that in some of the older fields new wells sometimes had substantially higher initial productions than other wells near by. The explanation seemed to be that some sands were mudded off in the original drilling. Their pressure was then not great enough to break down the mud wall in competition with the higher pressure of the sands, but the situation reversed itself so that a later well benefited by the pressure in these originally weaker sands. As time passed, in wells deeper than 5000 ft. the difficulty of bringing wells on production became more pronounced. This led to a hunt for substitutes, of which a number have been tried. The one that has proved most successful in our experience at Ventura is known as the Nobs solvent. At well No. 1 of the Associated-Ventura Land & Water Co. when it was recompleted in February 1936, about 10 days were spent in trying to bring the well in in the regular manner, but only about 113 bbl. of water could be swabbed from the well, and even this quantity decreased as time passed. Oriented overgrowths and intergrowths among both metallic and nonmetallic substances have been recognized and studied for well over a century. The work of Widmanstätten in 1808 on the geometrical structure in meteorites, a structure known by his name, demonstrated that oriented intergrowths can occur in purely metallic systems. This fact led to much of the early microscopic study of alloys, contributing greatly to the advance of physical metallurgy. The problem has been attacked again in recent years in a comprehensive fashion, with the object of discovering what atomic movements may occur during phase changes in alloy systems. Much of this work has appeared in the A.I.M.E. Transactions in a series of papers published by Mehl and coworkers beginning in 19311. Although many aspects of this general problem remain unsolved, it may be said that the orientation of a new phase forming by precipitation from solid solution or by transformation invariably bears a unique relationship to the orientation of the phase from which it formed, and that similarity in atomic patterns on atomic planes in the two phases play an important part in determining the orientation relationship. Analogous orientation relationships exist in oriented intergrowths in nonmetallic systems—mineral or inorganic. In 1827 Haidinger2 discovered natural intergrowths of hematite and magnetite, and demonstrated that the rough form of the magnetite octahedrons was delineated by small crystals of hematite, of which the basal (00.1) planes lay parallel to the octahedral cleavage planes of the magnetite. Price is a complicated concept, for price is both a cause and an effect. This reciprocal aspect is commonly overlooked and the oversight is the source of many economic maladjustments. Price is the resultant of the ratio between supply and demand, but it differs from a mathematical concept of a proportion, by itself constituting an economic force which continuously alters the elements that determine the relationship. Price, therefore, is not merely the outcome of other forces but is in its own right one of the most powerful of economic agents. Price accordingly does not play a passive role; nor can it be sterilized or rendered inactive. In consequence, price cannot be fixed or at least kept fixed, except by the elimination of all freedom of choice on the part of producers and consumers. A primary objective of all economic activity is equilibrium. The same is true of a unit of economic activity, the single industry. The plane upon which equilibrium centers may shift in the course of time, but equilibrium itself is the point of departure and the point of return. If an industry is in equilibrium, that industry is operating effectively. The motivating forces of an industry—profits or the common good—are not to be confused with the prerequisite of equilibrium, but this mistake is often made. The producer is dominated by the profit motive; the consumer, or his collective representative, by the general welfare motive. No one is the advocate for equilibrium; that status is supposed to be arrived at automatically. If the forces of competition are perfectly free, such is the tendency. Equilibrium For the purposes of this analysis, equilibrium needs to be broadly defined and is conceived to involve: (1) balance between supply and demand; (2) internal equipoise amongst the elements within an industry; and (3) symmetry in respect to the whole economy. This definition implies flexibility and case of adjustment; a ready accommodation to change. Equilibrium does not postulate profits or nonprofits, social objectives or the lack of them. The first sintering of zinc ores was done at the Bartlesville plant of the National Zinc Co., under the auspices of the late Otto Rissman. Mr. Rissman, who had had a long experience in the treatment of zinc ores, well realized all the difficulties of satisfactorily roasting zinc concentrates, which were becoming finer and dustier as each year went by—thus increasing the difficulties of roasting them in the existing forms of roasters, which were furnaces of the Ropp, Hegeler or similar types. Mr. Rissman's idea of the advantages of sinter was expressed in this way: in a zinc ore dead-roasted in a mechanical furnace there are many particles that are just like an egg; that is, they have a hard and impervious film of fused material on the outside, and in the retorting this completely cuts off access of the reducing gases to the center of the egg until a temperature has been reached at which this shell of the egg can be broken down through fusion. A particle of sintered zinc sulphide, on the contrary, is exactly like a piece of sponge. The moment the retort reaches the temperature at which the reactions can take place, they begin, because the reducing gases have ready access to the interior of the particles by means of the pores of the '" sponge." His faith in the advantages of sinter was amply borne out by the results obtained at the pioneer sintering plant for zinc ores installed by the National Zinc Company. Early Method of Sintering The method of procedure at Bartlesville was to roast the zinc concentrates down to somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 per cent residual sulphide sulphur; to cool these, then to wet them down to the proper moisture and mix them in the mixer of the sintering plant; then to sinter them by means of the heat available from the residual sulphides. The sulphur contents of the roast varied considerably, of course, as it was difficult with the furnaces in use to control the roasting exactly at any point short of dead roast. Hence at times the concentrates were roasted a little too low to sinter readily, and at such times the lack of sulphur was made up by the addition of raw concentrates to the sintering-machine charge in suitable amount.

IN preparing this paper it has been the aim of the writer to keep the problems of both producers and consumers in mind. Until now, no attempt has been made to familiarize each group with the other's practice and limitations. This paper is an effort to acquaint the readers with some of the factors pertaining to the problem and cost of mining and preparing steam coal, and also to the economics of producing steam with such coal. In recent years all lines of endeavor have turned to intensive mechani-zation in order to lower the unit cost of production. The average fuel consumption in steam electric generating stations has dropped in 20 years from 4.0 lb. to 1.4.1b. per kilowatt-hour; while the modern power station can generate 1 kw-hr. on a fraction under 1 lb., or 13,000 B.t.u. coal. Also, the amount produced per man has in that same period risen from 3.8 to 8.2 tons, owing to the use of modernized equipment below ground for coal cutting, drilling, shooting, loading, hauling and hoisting. Unfortunately, the rapid speed of 5 tons per minute of operation at which the coal is loaded mechanically precludes any appreciable removal of impurities at the coal face, so that the raw coal is hoisted containing a markedly higher percentage of impurities than the hand-loaded coal, which was subjected to the scrutiny of the miner during loading. Also, during the past 20 years, certain seams of coal lying close to the surface have been made economically available by the improved design of electrically operated shovels and draglines for the removal of overbur-den running as high as 56 ft. This strip coal frequently contains so much ash in the raw state (Table 1) that it would have no sales value. There-fore, coal preparation must be adopted to beneficiate the raw product. Some seams in the United States have a decreasing ash content with decreasing size, owing, in all probability, to the fact that the coal is friable while the impurities are hard, causing a concentration of the low-ash material in the fine sizes. Illinois No. 6 coal being rather hard, naturally the reverse is true.

In order to conduct these investigations in an orderly manner they are carried out under a published schedule of tests known as Schedule 20, which specifies detailed requirements for motors, controllers, etc., and fees covering the various inspections and tests made as part of a routine investigation.

THE demands of the petroleum and chemical industries for steels to be used in pressure vessels and similar structures at artificially low tempera-tures are continually increasing, and the writing of proper specifications with suitable tests becomes increasingly important. Likewise, the selec-tion of suitable steels for such applications is of increasing concern to the metallurgist. It is generally recognized that highly alloyed steels of the austenitic stainless type retain their properties even at very low tempera-tures and represent the best technological solution of the low-temperature steel problem. However, in many instances less expensive carbon or low-alloy steels suitable for service within limited temperature ranges are available. The problem thus becomes one of defining the various factors involved in the production and fabrication of these less expensive steels and determining the temperature ranges in which their properties justify engineering application. Most of the applications involve welded structures, and the heat effect of welding as well as the nature of the weld metal are matters of prime concern. The first problem that the metallurgist faces is the determination of the type of test to be used as a criterion of the performance of the steel in low-temperature service. It has been generally recognized that the static properties of steel as determined in the ordinary tensile test undergo a gradual and relatively slight change as the temperature of test is lowered in the range of current interest; i.e., from room temperature to minus 120° C. It is further generally recognized that the behavior of steel under impact involving notch sensitivity is definitely affected at the lower temperatures. While the major subject of this paper is the effect of grain-refining deoxidizers, of low-alloy additions and of welding on the low-temperature notched-bar impact properties, an inquiry into the general behavior of steel under low-temperature impact testing is included. Approximately two years ago the authors obtained data that indicated that initial precipitation could not be detected by change of lattice parameter in the aluminum-rich aluminum-magnesium alloys. Some of these data were first published in a brief note in Mining and Metallurgy'. Cast specimens were used at that time and they showed initial precipitation relatively sooner than sheet material of the same composition. For this reason a more thorough investigation has been carried out using a homogenized aluminum-magnesium sheet corltairling approximately 10 per cent magnesium. Materials.—The aluminum used in the preparation of the aluminum-magnesium alloy was of high purity, containing less than 0.01 per cent each of iron, silicon and copper. The magnesium was high-purity sublimed magnesium. Preparation of Alloy.—Approximately 4 kg. of the aluminunl was melted in a plumbago crucible in an electric furnace and the magnesium was added. The melt was thoroughly stirred with a graphite rod and fluxed with chlorine gas before casting. The alloy was cast in the form of a sheet ingot in a cold iron tilting mold (approximately 200 by 165 by 40 mm.) and into small chill-cast slabs for chemical analysis (75 by 40 by 5 mm.). The chemical analyses were made upon drillings from the analysis slabs. The analytical methods were those described in "Chemical Analysis of Aluminum," published by the Aluminum Company of America. The composition of the alloy was found to be: magnesium 10.30, silicon 0.013, iron 0.008 and copper 0.005 per cent. In reviewing petroleum development in Venezuela during the year 1936, it is well to bear in mind certain factors that affected progress, although not directly connected with the oil industry itself. At the start of the year, when the present Federal Administration took over the reins of government, reaction against the former regime resulted in some popular uprisings. Although these were entirely political in character, they were not without their effect on the oil industry itself. Such popular agitation really ended with a short general strike in Caracas, Maracaibo and other cities during June, these strikes being based on demands for certain changes in government policies. The strikes were duly investigated and their motives taken into consideration by the executive power or by Congress, and during the year many of the civil, political and administrative laws have been revised. In June and December, however, it was necessary to suspend activities in drilling and production work, particularly in the Lake Maracaibo Basin area. In June a strike caused a five-day shutdown in the main producing fields and on Dec. 14 labor difficulties resulted in a shutdown that continued to the end of the year, which necessitated suspension of all drilling and production in the Lake Basin area and curtailment of shipments to deep-water terminals. Actually, the strike lasted for a period of 42 days, until Federal intervention brought the dispute to a close with minor wage increases to workers hut with no loss of initiative or independence on the part of the oil companies. Operations in eastern Venezuela were not affected by the labor disturbances, production and exports having been reduced in December only in the Lake Basin fields. Well Completions On Jan. 1, 1937, a total of 3384 wells had been completed throughout Venezuelan fields, as compared with 3094 on Jan. 1,1936. Of these wells, 2005 were producers. The 290 completions effected during 1936 were by the following operating companies: Lago Petroleum Corporation, 123 completions; Dutch Shell group, 104; Standard Oil Company of Venezuela, 46; Mene Grande Oil Co., 15; British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., 2.

Even before the arrival of Cortes in 1519, the history of Mexico was closely linked to that of its mineral production; the mining activities of the Aztecs being thus described by Clavigero, one of the early historians: In the mountains of Anahuac there abound in veins all kinds of metals, and infinite variety of other fossiliferous products. The Aztecs obtained gold from the countries of the Cohuijques, of the Mixtecas, of the Zapotecas and from various other places. They gathered that precious metal usually in gain, from the sands of the rivers, keeping a certain portion for the crown. They obtained silver from the mines of Taxco, of Tzumpango and others; however, this metal was not as esteemed by them as by other neighboring nations. They had two kinds of copper; one hard, which they used instead of iron to make sickles, lancea and all kinds of rural and military instruments and another, soft, with which they made kettles, goblets and other receptacles. This metal abounds mainly in the province of Zacatula and in that of Cohuijques, which at present is in the kingdom of Michoacan. They obtained tin from the mines of Taxco and lead from those of Izmiquilpan, located in the country of the Otomies. From the tin they made money, and the lead, we know they sold in the market places, but we ignore the uses to which they applied it. They also had mines of iron in Tlaxcala, in Taxco and in other places; but they either had not discovered them, or did not know how to make use of the metal they contained. In Chilapa there were mines of mercury, and in other places there were mines of sulphur, alum, vitriol, cinnabar, cohre and of a white earth which they esteemed highly. As regards mercury and vitriol, we do not know of what use they were to them; the other metals they used in paintings and dyes. There were then great abundance of amber and asphalt—bitumen of Judea—on the coast of the seas and many cities of that territory paid tribute of one and the other to the kingdom of Mexico. They mounted the amber in gold, and it was only used as ornament and display by them. With the asphalt they made certain perfumes. The following extracts dealing with pre-Colonial gold are taken from the famous " Cartas de RelaciÓn " to Charles V, in which Cortes described the progress of the Conquest: . . . here there came two chiefs who owned lands in the valley; one four leagues down the valley and the other two leagues up the valley and they gave me some gold necklaces of little value and seven or eight girls. . . . . . . that day I left the City of Churultecal and traveled four leagues to some villages of the City of Cuasucingo where the natives received me very well and gave me women and pieces of gold. . . .

Lead has often been suggested as a protective coating for iron and steel. Such a protective coating should possess: (1) good adhesion, (2) durability, (3) ease of application, (4) freedom from pinholes, (5) good appearance and (6) low cost, but, unfortunately, lead coatings so far produced do not have all of these characteristics. Because of the necessity of carrying out the coating process cheaply, and because lead solutions have poor plating characteristics, most of the efforts have been directed toward the hot-dipping process rather than electroplating. The hot-dipping processes using lead have not been successful chiefly because of the lack of adherence between iron and lead. In any coating process involving iron a bond can be obtained only by the formation of an intermetallic compound, the formation of a solid solution, or mechanical means. Lead forms with iron two immiscible liquid solutions, and in the solid state no intermetallic compounds or solutions. It is necessary, therefore, to employ some other element or elements as a binding agent. Tin may be used as in terneplate, or copper in the form of a thin film of electrolytically deposited metal to which the lead will adhere. Because of its physical and chemical properties, lead as a coakkg medium would undoubtedly be limited in its use to sheet and wire and then only when the article is not subject to abrasion or wear. A very large tonnage of these products is being used under such conditions and a successful lead-coating process should be a valuable contribution to the science. Two other difficulties stand in the way of successful lead coating—that of poor appearance of the weathered surface and the tendency of the lead to form pinholes during solidification. Since lead is commonly accepted as cathodic to iron, these exposed areas are ones of accelerated corrosion. For years many oil producers have believed that often low-pressure oil- and gas-bearing strata have been over coked in fields where the rotary system of drilling has been used. Collom3/ gave as a reason for this condition that because the mud fluid was thick, the oil or gas stratum was plastered and sealed as the tools passed through it and no oil showed at the surface. Although this observation was made 15 years ago, it may often still be true notwithstanding modern developments in coring and electrical logging. Operators have believed, also, that mud fluid does not solidify behind the casing. Lewis and McMurray4/ stated: "All the evidence obtainable from practical experience points to the fact that the mud fluid properly mixed and employed does not solidify behind the casing, even in deer wells and after long periods."

A group of 13 cities situated in Los Angeles and Orange counties in Southern California is engaged in constructing an aqueduct to carry water from the Colorado River at a point near Parker, Arizona, to a distribution point near Riverside, California. The aqueduct will have a total length of approximately 241 miles, and is designed to deliver 1605 cu. ft. of water per second, or a little more than one billion gallons per day. The aqueduct crosses a barren, desert waste and the project includes approximately 91 miles of 16-ft. tunnel. The large amount of tunnel driving that has been done in this country in the past few years has resulted in some remarkable developments in equipment and methods. The building of the Colorado River Aqueduct,, with its 91 miles of tunnels, has called on the best engineering knowledge in the country. New and better equipment has been designed for all phases of the work, and this equipment has been coordinated and adapted to the various conditions with a high degree of efficiency. The result has been that records for tunnel driving have been set under adverse natural conditions that exceed the estimates for progress under good conditions. All of the tunnels in the main aqueduct, except the Valverde and Bernasconi at the western end, have a finished diameter, inside the concrete lining, of 16 ft. Fig. 4 shows a section of the tunnel with the concrete lining in place. Fig. 5 illustrates the finished tunnel in three typical sections. The standard tunnel grade is 3.432 ft. per mile in the 16-ft. tunnels, but the Valverde and Bernasconi tunnels have a steeper grade and a finished diameter of 15 ft. 3 in. The rough bore of the large main aqueduct tunnels averages 12.95 solid cubic yards of material per foot of advance in timbered sections and 10.76 solid cubic yards per foot in unsupported sections. THE orientation relationships resulting from allotropic transforma-tions and the formation of segregate structures in metals and alloys have been the subject of the eight earlier papers in this series1. A brief summary of orientation studies has also been given by Sachs2. A survey of these papers discloses that the factors that determine the orientation relationship of a precipitated phase to its parent solid solution, as Well as the outward form and appearance of the new phase, are not completely understood. It is now evident that crystallographically analogous systems, as a rule, exhibit the same type of Widmanstätten figure and orientation relations, so that useful information is not to be expected from examination of a new alloy involving lattice combinations of which the orientation relationships are already known. Therefore, the determina-tion of the relations existing between lattice types that have not already been studied seems to be the most promising mode of attack upon the problem; both of the systems reported in this paper represent new com-binations of lattice types.

GRINDING costs are an important item in cement manufacture, and the cost of power is one of the large items in grinding costs. Even where power is of secondary importance, cost items dependent on mill capacity are influenced by the efficiency with which the mill uses power. Tube mills typify the grinding mills most generally used in cement plants, though other types are in use. Tube mills have been widely criticized as being extremely inefficient, and this feeling regarding them has led to many attempts to design more efficient grinding equipment. Other types may be an improvement over tube mills, but the improvement has certainly not been revolutionary, at least as applied to clinker grinding. The very fact that there is doubt regarding the relative efficacy of various types of mills is an indication that an adequate basis for an analysis of performance is lacking. The development of methods of analyzing mill performance has been hampered by the lack of a suitable method for measuring the work actu-ally done in pulverizing. There has been no acceptable standard to which mill performance might be compared. As a consequence, it was not known whether the margin of possible improvement in pulverizing operations was large or small. Even direct comparison of different types of mills was seldom possible because most plants had only one type of mill for each type of service. Comparisons between plants were difficult because of differences in the grinding characteristics of various clinkers. Some recent developments complete a chain of circumstances that place the cement, industry in a particularly fortunate position for the study of its clinker-pulverizing operations. Modern investigators of grinding phenomena have generally agreed that the best measure of mill performance is the production of new surface. For most materials this measure of performance is largely theoretical and has a rather remote connection with the practical aims of the grinding operation. In clinker grinding, on the other hand, surface area is intimately connected with the properties conferred on the cement by grinding.
