INTERNAL stress and season cracking in brass have been studied for many years and the technical literature contains many data on various phases of the subject. A résumé of the literature shows certain fairly well established points upon which various authors are mostly agreed: 1. Season cracking is primarily caused by the presence of relatively high internal stresses, or possibly in some cases by external stresses, or both. 2. A specific corrosion is also essential to season cracking: Certain agents, particularly mercurous salts, mercuric salts and ammonia salts; have such a specific corrosive effect. 3. The tendency to season crack under given conditions increases with increasing zinc content, brass containing less than 20 per cent zinc being relatively immune. 4. In alpha brass the season cracks are intercrystalline; in alphabeta brass they lie between the two constituents; and in beta brass they are transcrystalline. 5. The ordinary impurities or added elements in special brasses have little or no effect on the tendency to season crack. 6. Internal stresses can be eliminated, or at least reduced to a safe 'limit by annealing treatments at temperatures that do not produce visible microstructural changes or appreciable softening of the worked brasses. There are, however, some points in connection with the phenomenon of season cracking which have not been thoroughly investigated, or wherein different authors and investigators are not entirely in agreement. The investigations described in this paper were undertaken to determine: 1. The correlation between mercurous nitrate tests and actual season cracking on long-time atmospheric exposure. 2. The quantitative effect of type and degree of drawing operations on the intensity of internal stress and on the tendency to season crack in brass tubes. 3. The possibility of drawing high-brass tubes in such a manner as to prevent the occurrence of harmful stresses rather than to find a remedy for such stresses once having obtained them.

Only two years ago there appeared in our technical magazines articles wherein it was shown that the application of back-pressure increased the ultimate production of a well, that edge water can be stopped in its encroachment by the injection of gas into the productive formation, with the consequent conservation of energy within the pool, that gas is the source of all energy involved in oil production, and that each pool has a definite minimum-valued gas-oil ratio to be attained for the most economical operation of wells. Today we are not so certain of these matters. Probably in some fields, under special circumstances, these ideas are correct, but certainly they must not be correct in all fields, under any and all circumstances. The nature of the productive structure, the location of particular properties on the structure, the existence of adjoining neighbors, whether these are higher or lower on the structure, and the methods of production followed by all operators on the structure, sand for sand on depth, make these subjects worthy of full consideration. Our difficulties in analyzing and comparing the performance of reservoirs in various parts of the world do not rest solely upon structural features and property lines. We do not complete the list of causes for these difficulties if we add lithologic features and correlation of strata encountered by the drill, with the magnitude of pressures exerted by fluids within any of these strata. A further cause, one which the author believes will complete the list, is one involving the theoretical mechanics of fluids within porous formations—porous in the nature of interstices in sandstones and some limestones, networks of fractures in shales, and cavities in otherwise compact limestones. The confusion of ideas concerning reservoir mechanics still with us today seems largely due to our failure to recognize among all wells three great divisions of theoretical mechanics, three great systems which are distinct in themselves, and according to which each well, or better, each group of wells, must be analyzed separately. THE importance of the Widmanstätten structure to structure theory in metallography has been recognized by many writers.1 It is a structure produced by the precipitation of a new phase from a solid solution upon cooling as a result of changing solid solubility, and displays a characteristic appearance indicating a crystallographic relationship between the new phase and the original solid solution (Fig. 1). First discovered in 1808 by Alois de Widmanstätten2, the structure has been traced by analogy through many alloy systems. Particularly is this true of the steels. Sorby's classic work3 on the microstructure of iron and steel was in essence an attempt to explain the origin of this characteristic structure in meteoric iron. He observed in a Bessemer steel and in a cast-steel ingot structures which we now recognize as typical Widmanstätten figures.4 Osmond5 observed structures in a steel ingot analogous to those found in meteorites. When brasses containing from 61 to 62.5 per cent. copper are very rapidly cooled from temperatures near their melting point to below 0" C., unusual results are obtained. These results are quite unexplainable from a consideration of the old copper-zinc constitutional diagram but they can be satisfactorily explained by means of the diagram revised by Genders and Bailey1 (Fig. 1). Experiments on a 60/40 Brass If an alloy containing 60 per cent. copper is heated to any temperature between approximately 760' C. and its melting point, it will consist entirely of beta. Upon slowly cooling, alpha will start to separate just below 760" C. Since this alpha will contain nearly 65 per cent, copper, the beta will be impoverished by its separation. As the temperature decreases the composition of the separating alpha will approach approximately 61 per cent. and the beta in contact with the alpha will maintain an equilibrium composition approaching 54.5 per cent. copper. If the rate of cooling is extremely slow, especially at the lower temperatures, stable equilibrium will be established by diffusion through the alpha and beta so that eventually 85 per cent. of the alloy will consist of alpha containing 61 per cent. copper, while 15 per cent. will be beta containing 54.5 per cent. copper. With a faster cooling rate diffusion cannot keep apace and the constituents will be cored, the alpha varying from 65 to 61 per cent. copper and the beta from 60 to 54.5 copper. In this case the amount of alpha will be less than 85 per cent. and the beta will be increased correspondingly. The general structure thus obtained is illustrated in Fig. 2. When a more rapid rate of cooling is effected by quenching in water, the alloy is retained largely in the beta form. However, the crystals of beta are usually outlined with dark fringes which at high magnifications are found to be very fine alpha-beta structures almost martensitic in appearance. This paper discusses some fundamental metallurgical principles involved in production of sound cast bronze. In a previous paper the writers advanced the theory that "oxidation" in bronze castings is due to incipient shrinkage, and showed the effect of reducing melting atmospheres.' In the present paper the effects of certain impurities and of actual oxidizing conditions are shown. The appendix deals with the appearance of various inclusions. For many years the prevailing opinion has been that unsoundness, dark colored fractures and other phenomena accompanying porosity and weakness in bronzes are due to oxidation. The actual troubles are caused by fissures of intercrystalline type, which are often mistaken for intercrystalline films. These weaken the metal and make it porous. Grave doubt regarding the accuracy of the oxidation theory appears when several research papers presented within the last 10 years are reviewed critically. In 1919, Comstock2 conducted metallographic researches, attempting to identify "oxides" in synthetically prepared metals. He found that oxides of tin, aluminum, zinc, etc. are different from the intercrystalline films (or cavities) to which porosity is due. Apparently he believed that these "oxide films" may be caused by volatile oxides of zinc or of phosphorus or by dissolved gases thrown out of solution during solidification of the metal. In 1923, Woyski and Boeck3 definitely questioned the accuracy of the oxidation theory and indicated the danger from reducing atmospheres. They say that "oxidation, gassing and shrinkage may produce effects very similar." In 1926, investigations by Iwasé4 showed marked change in absorp-tion coefficients for various gases in copper above and below the liquidus.

This paper, describing the mining practices at the Pilares mine, Pilares de Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts. At present (1930) practically all the mineral production from the Nacozari district is from the Pilares mine of the Moctezuma Copper Co., a subsidiary of the Phelps Dodge Corporation. The ore is mined for its copper but contains associated silver in small quantities.

In 1866, Thomas Graham1 called attention to the volume of gases, three times the volume of the sample, evolved from a meteoric iron heated in an evacuated porcelain tube. From that time to this the occurrence and significance of gases in metals have been the subject of investigation by many workers, among whom Sieverts,2 Iwasé3 and 0. W. Ellis4 stand preeminent. Sieverts and Iwasé concerned themselves with the solubility of a number of gases in metals in the liquid and solid states. They determined the absorption coefficients of these gases, and in all cases found a sharp change in solubility at the melting point of the metals. Ellis analyzed the gases evolved by solidifying copper and those occluded by the solidified metal. Lobley and Jepson5 endeavored to determine the effects of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and nitrogen on the porosity of copper that was allowed to solidify in the presence of each gas after 30 min. exposure to it in the

In treating a cast metal by any working process such as rolling, drawing or forging, variations in the conditions present in the remelting, casting, chilling and preheating of the initial ingot will certainly have some effect on the physical properties of the final product. In considering the effects of cold working on the physical properties of metals, however, it will be assumed that these factors, being controlled according to best practice, will remain constant and therefore may be neglected. Starting with such a uniform metal ingot, the next operation in the production of wrought metal involves hot working by rolling, forging or extrusion so as to produce a slab, billet or bloom. This working must be sufficient to produce substantial grain refinement and minimize any defects occurring in the initial ingot. Even such a hot-worked product is not suitable as a starting material for determining the effects of cold working because it contains internal strains analogous to those resulting from cold working. It is necessary, therefore, to supplement the hot working with a considerable amount of cold working, followed by a proper annealing in order to obtain a material suitable for use in defining the effects of cold working on the physical properties of a metal. That is, if the effects of cold working are to be evaluated accurately it is necessary to have other effects at least constant if not absent. Such material, unfortunately, cannot always be obtained in commercial practice but the requirements just indicated certainly represent the desired goal; this goal has been attained in the treatment of some metals, one being aluminum. Factors That Must Be Considered Simultaneously with Cold Working So many other factors affect the physical properties of a metal that it is necessary to consider these factors simultaneously with cold working; their effects vary in magnitude with the amount of cold work present. The most important of these factors are: (I) chemical composition, (2) structure, (3) temperature of working, (4) character of working, (5) rate of working, and (6) methods used for measuring results. CRUSHING and concentration flow-sheets of western mills have become greatly simplified and more or less standardized of recent years with the introduction of modern grinding methods and flotation. Improvement has not stopped, however, and advancement is continually being made in crushing and milling practice. A case in point, where remarkable improvements in efficiency have resulted from comparatively minor changes in the flow-sheet, is in the New Cornelia mill of the Calumet and Arizona Mining Co. at Ajo, Ariz. This mill, completed in 1924 for the concentration ,of the sulfide ores of the New Cornelia mine, was originally designed for a 5000-ton capacity. Electrolytic zinc produced from sulfate solution and with pure lead anodes is always contaminated with a small and varying percentage of lead. The purpose of this investigation is to determine the characteristics of several lead alloys and their influence on the products of electrolysis and power consumption. The study of alloyed anodes has been a matter of interest for some years. Tainton, Taylor and Ehrlinger prepared a highly interesting paper' on this subject a year ago, in which the effects of silver-lead and some ternary alloys of lead-silver-tin were described, and the presentation of any paper on insoluble anodes will owe much to the inspirational results achieved by Dr. Colin G. Fink and Li Chi Pan in their work on insoluble anodes for the electrolysis of brine,2 and to other published papers by Dr. Fink and his coworkers embracing the development of the copper-silicon-manganese anode for the production of electrolytic copper and the general subject of anode development. The present paper describes a study of various combinations of 10 metals. The general plan of the work provides for the fabrication of the alloyed anode, its adequate conditioning by preparatory electrolytic operation, the production of cathode zinc and its analysis, the determination of the anode polarization, and other features. A list of the anodes tested, showing composition and polarization at various current densities together with the lead assay of the cathode zinc, is shown in Table 1. Determination of Anode Polarization In the determination of anode polarization under operating conditions it is essential that the anode area used be restricted to the side facing the cathode, in order that these measurements may be referred to a definite current per unit of area. Since the earliest discoveries of oil in the Rocky Mountain area the spirit of cooperation in drilling and production programs has prevailed. There has scarcely been a field which has not been developed in an orderly manner through mutual agreement between competitive operators. An appreciable saving has resulted, as many unnecessary wells have been eliminated. We have unit operation plans and agreements which were developed at an early date. Rock River, found in 1918, has been a unit operation. One of the first prorate agreements ever attempted was made in Salt Creek in 1921. Teapot, first developed in 1922, has been a unit operation; the lessee, the Government, and the lessor, one operator. South Casper Creek, found in 1918, has been developed as a unit. Rex Lake, found in 1923, is a unit operation. The list might be extended materially but it serves to indicate that the Rocky Mountain region enjoyed the fruits of unit operation at an early date. It is concluded from this unitization study in the Rocky Mountain region that there is an appreciable saving in both development and production costs as well as the elimination of waste of a natural resource. Certainly, when unit operation conserves an irreplaceable natural resource as well as capital, any legal or political impediment to its successful development will be overcome. If one company supervises the operations in one field, it appears to be a unit operation. This may not be true if the lands involved have been leased from a great number of lessors. Royalty holders create a most intense competitive operation. The Rocky Mountain region has its full quota of such diversified interests. The original study calls for consideration of two types of fields, unit and near-unit operation. This Committee has felt that if an agreement of any character has brought about a saving it is an approach to unit operation. The fields have been classified into four types: 1. Unit Operation.—Any field whereby the competitive drilling-drainage feature is or will be absent in the development and operation of the pool.

The need for standardizing methods of arriving at definite conclusions regarding the cleanability of a given coal, and for measuring the performance of coal-cleaning equipment, is constantly increasing. Earlier notes by the author on this subject are amplified in this paper, because he believes that better preparation of bituminous coal is a partial solution of the coal operators' troubles. Washability Studies The term "washability" of coal was coined when washing was the universal method of separating coal from its impurities by utilizing their difference in specific gravity. This and analogous terms are still used in their broad sense although pneumatic or air separation is now used to clean coal. These terms are so used in this paper. Too much time or money can hardly be spent on "feed surveys') to get a "picture" of the coal that is to be cleaned. There have been too many "rule of thumb" methods used. Screen analyses and "sink-and-float" tests on the raw coal enable the coal operator and washery man to predict within reasonable limits the results that may be expected from any efficient cleaning apparatus. The sizes to be examined to get the picture are optional to the investigator. In modern wet washing, the range is from 4 to 0 in. Hand-picking on properly constructed belts is perhaps the standard for cleaning above these sizes. A good picture of the coal may be obtained by the following screen analysis: 3½ to 1¼ in. 1¼ to 3½ in. ½ to 5/16 in. 5/16 in. to 14 mesh 14 to 28 mesh 28 to 48 mesh and for very complete data on the fines: 48 to 100 mesh 100 to 200 mesh and through 200 mesh

THE mixing of fine ores with fuel and burning under induced draft is called sintering in iron-ore practice and either sintering or roasting in copper and lead metallurgy. The first development of sintering was the Huntington-Heberlein process, in which fine sulfide ores mixed with fuel were charged into a pot and burned under the action of an upcast current of air introduced at the bottom of the pot. Modern development has resulted in two types of machine; the continuous Dwight-Lloyd machine, which consists of heat-resisting grates and a moving beltlike type of hearth constructed of metal, in which air is drawn downward through the bed, and the stationary Greenawalt batch process, which operates in the same manner as the Dwight-Lloyd except that the hearth is stationary. The recent rapid increase in the use of sintering has been the result of two great advances in metallurgical process-flotation and the treatment of flue dust. The Dwight-Lloyd machine is used in many plants for agglomerating flotation concentrates and at the same time reducing the sulfur content to furnace requirements and it has become standard practice to treat iron blast-furnace flue dust by either the Greenawalt or Dwight-Lloyd machine, so that it can be recharged into the furnace. The mining of low-grade magnetite iron deposits and their beneficiating by grinding and magnetic separation resulted in a fine concentrate extremely detrimental to blast-furnace practice. These concentrates are sintered and made into ideal material for blast-furnace use. Incidentally, coke savings of about 400 lb. per ton of pig are reported.

It is generally understood by workers in the field of the crystal structure of metallic alloys that terminal solid solutions are of two types, the substitutional and the interstitial. In reviewing the literature, the work of Weissl on the crystal structure of the alpha copper-tin alloys was encountered, in which a new type of terminal solid solution was proposed. In brief, Weiss' findings showed that the density of the alloys calculated from the side of the unit face-centered cube on the assumption of simple substitution—that is, with four atoms to the unit face-centered cell—was much higher than the density measured directly. It was suggested that the assumption of four atoms to the unit cube is not valid for these alloys, and that each unit cube contained less than four atoms; in other words, that one tin atom replaces more than one copper atom, leaving some atomic positions unoccupied. Such a structure, if verified, would have far-reaching significance in the study of the crystal structure of metallic alloys. It would indicate a complexity in terminal solid solutions not hitherto suspected and might encourage work leading to the discovery of other alloys of the same type, and perhaps to types intermediate between it and the two recognized types. It is of importance, therefore, to reinvestigate these alloys with respect to the type of solid-solution structure obtaining therein. Materials and Experimental Method The alloys were prepared from electrolytic copper cut directly from the cathode and the high-purity tin furnished by the U. S. Bureau of Standards for the calibration of thermocouples. No analyses for impurities of these materials or of the finished alloys were made, since such impurities as might be present could have only a wholly inappreciable effect upon the data obtained and the conclusions drawn. The alloys were made by melting the weighed copper charge in a graphite crucible under a KCl-LiC1 flux with later additions of NaC1, using induction heating. The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to Mining and Metallurgy and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes, It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. J. V. W. Reynders is chairman of the Endowment Committee. Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund THE Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund, consisting of $100,000, was given the Institute in 1929 by the family of Colonel Mudd who had served the Institute as Director, Vice-president and on many important committees. His long career of distinguished professional and public service is fittingly commemorated by this fund. The income is available for support of research and other special purposes. In view of Colonel Mudd's life work with the nonferrous metals and his keen interest in the younger men of the profession it is purposed to apply the fund particularly to the benefit of these two. Control of income is exercised by the Board of Directors on recommendation of a Committee consisting of the President and Secretary, ex officiis, together with three others selected by the Board. The Committee consists at present of the following members: W. H. Bassett, President; H. Foster Bain, Secretary; Harvey S. Mudd serving until October, 1931; Edgar Rickard serving till October, 1932; George Otis Smith serving until October, 1933. On recommendation of this Committee the Board has authorized as a first project the preparation of a series of small books designed especially to be helpful to the Junior Members. These are now being written and it is hoped will be available for distribution in 1931. The list includes: A Brief History of American Mining, by T. A. Rickard; Mining Costs, Why and What, by Arthur Notman; Introduction to Mineral Economics, by H. Foster Bain and T. T. Read; Choice of Methods—A Record of Experience in Making Decisions, with chapters by W. H. Bassett, F. W. Bradley, E. DeGolyer, Howard N. Eavenson, A. B. Parsons, J. V. W. Reynders, L. D. Ricketts, Robert E. Tally, Pope Yeatman and others. One other book is projected but final selection has not been made. Ordinarily secondary copper, unless electrolytically refined, is reclaimed directly as foundry ingots used in the manufacture of copper-rich alloy castings. This use does not require the elimination of the impurities to the degree required if the recovered'metal is to be used for electrical purposes where a high electrical conductivity is of prime importance. However, as a part of the general policy of reusing its own scrap and by-products wherever possible, the Western Electric Co. at its Hawthorne Works is recovering its secondary copper as wire bars which are delivered to its own rod and wire mill and there processed into wire of high electrical conductivity. This departure from the usual recovery scheme has been accomplished through the careful classification and sorting of the material entering the furnace charges and the careful control of the subsequent melting and refining in a reverberatory furnace. Tests conducted over a period of approximately four years have shown that the quality of wire bars produced from selected secondary copper is equal to that of wire bars produced by the electrolytic refineries. The interest which has been exhibited in the process by those who have seen it has prompted the following general description. It is the authors' opinion that the recovery of secondary copper will become more and more an important factor in the copper production industry. The description is largely of the refining furnace and its operation, but it must be remembered that careful classification and sorting of the scrap materials to eliminate impurities are just as important as the furnace operation toward obtaining a satisfactory final product. Classification and sorting do not lend themselves easily to description; they must, just be done. It should also be recognized at the outset that constant intelligent supervision is requisite to the success of the process because there are so many ways in which impurities can find their way into the final product. Secondary Copper Used for Wire Bars Only clean secondary copper of the grades known to the trade as Numbers 1 and 2 are melted for wire-bar manufacture. This paper describing the mining practice at the Utah Copper Co., Bingham Canyon, Utah, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Utah Copper Co. operates the low-grade open-out copper mine at Bingham Canyon, Utah, which is 30 miles in a southwesterly direction from Salt Lake City. In addition to the mine the company operates two flotation concentrators, the Magma plant and the Arthur plant, which have a combined capacity at maximum metallurgical efficiency of 60,000 tons daily. The concentrators are at Magna, about 18 miles from the mine. The company operates its own standard-gage railway, known as the Bingham and Garfield Railway, between the mine and the mills (fig. 1). Concentrates are smelted at the Garfield smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co., situated 4 miles from the mills.

This paper is a revision of a former paper published in mimeograph form by both the Canadian and American coal classification committees, and is now presented for the purpose of acquainting those interested with the present status of coal classification in Canada. The classification employed for "Customs purposes" is detailed, and the classification schemes from which the customs classification was derived are reviewed and discussed. The activities of the Canadian coal classification committee, namely, the Associate Committee of Coal Classification and Analysis of the National Research Council, is also reviewed. Reserves, Production and Uses of Canadian Coals The total coal resources of North America are estimated to be 69 per cent. of those of the world, and of this portion, the distribution is 52 per cent. for the United States and 17 per cent. for Canada. Accordingly, Canadian coal resources amount to approximately one-third of those of the United States, and one-sixth of those of the world. As for the geographical distribution, the bulk of the known coal deposits are in the extreme eastern and western portions of the country. Employing the usual, more or less loosely defined, designations for the different classes and subclasses of coal, the distribution of the Canadian coal resources, according to provinces, is as follows: Maritime Provinces: Nova Scotia and New Brunswick Bituminous and semibitu- minous coals. Ontario (northern part).............................Lignite. Saskatchewan, (and Manitoba)....................... Lignite. Alberta and British Columbia........................ Lignites, subbituminous, all kinds of bituminous, semibituminous and semianthracite coals. Those who have followed the geological developments in connection with the copper deposits of Quebec will recall that on many properties the sulphide bodies occur as replacements of fault breccias or tuff breccias, and exhibit a pronounced distaste for the more massive lavas. At the same time the rocks around the ore-bodies are profundly altered, first by addition of silica and sericite, later by conversion of these minerals into chlorite. It has been known for some years that at the Amulet and Waite-Ackerman Montgomery mines these conditions do not prevail. At both mines the ore-bodies are replacements of massive lavas, and at the Amulet they are associated with a very peculiar rock christened ?spotted dog', or 'dalmatianite'. Accordingly, when in 1929 the writer had the opportunity to make a further examination of these properties, two problems presented themselves for solution. The first was to determine, if possible, the conditions under which massive lava, rather than breccia, is replaced by the sulphide masses; the second, to find out the exact nature of dalmatianite and its relations to the sulphide bodies. The first of these problems is believed to have been solved; the second has been found very complex, and will require further work before it is satisfactorily settled.

Introduction As the Sherritt Gordon property is still in the development stage, . it is rather difficult to write a proper account of the mining methods and milling practice that will be used. While the general scheme of operation will remain the same, there will undoubtedly be many minor changes to meet special conditions which we cannot forsee at the present time. Most of the work accomplished to date has followed the usual routine of preliminary development in the Canadian North. However, we have learned a few things which might be of use to others operating under similar conditions. The most important of these is the saving in power cost made possible by the use of Diesels as against steam power when using wood fuel, and the movement of freight by tractors when rail transportation is not available. Location The property i6 located about 90 miles north of The Pas, or 40 miles northeast of the Flin Flon mine. A branch line from Cranberry Portage, on the?C. N. railway, between Flin Flon and The Pas, connects the property with the outside.
