Superior ventures selection and the subsequent management of their development and production are crucial in the competitive environment of the upstream minerals and energy industry. An important element of this chain is the management of uncertainty and risk dynamics. In the world of faster and more complicated technological and environmental changes, international competition and commodity market dynamics, thorough and sophisticated valuation must be carried out to establish a venture's value and return on investment. Thus, managers and investors must use methods that respond to market dynamics, investment and feasibility study options and provide relevant information for strategic investment decisions. Conventional methods have no built-in procedures to help investors analyse these options. Modern financial methods based on the dynamic arbitrage theory overcome these and other limitations of conventional methods. In this study, dynamic arbitrage theory has been used to formulate 3D parabolic differential equations that govern the stochastic processes of a copper mining venture with ongoing feasibility studies. The alternate direction implicit algorithm is used to solve the numerical approximations of the differential equations and their boundary conditions. Phase dynamics of the venture have been analysed to provide investors the appropriate timing for strategic investment decisions. The study also shows the amount and value of appropriate feasibility studies required to maximize the value of the mining venture.

"Top submerged lance furnace developments started in CSIRO in the early 1970s and was given the name Sirosmelt. In the early work the technology was developed for tin smelting and processing tin slags but once a small pilot plant was established other slag processing applications were soon recognised and evaluated for various copper, nickel, zinc and cobalt-containing slags. The process was tried for copper smelting and converting, which was proven in the small pilot plant in 1978. In the same year the first commercial application of the technology was established for the recovery of tin from slags at Associated Tin Smelters, Sydney. Work on lead smelting was initiated by the CSIRO team in the late 1970s and laboratory work led to pilot plant trials by Mount Isa Mines.In the second decade of the technology the focus of development became commercial acceptance of the technology through marketing, development and application by Ausmelt and Mount Isa Mines; the former commercialising and developing the technology for a wide range of applications, while the latter concentrated on its own commercial needs of copper and lead smelting. This decade saw a number of commercial plants built in Australia, with considerable interest becoming evident from other parts of the world. Towards the end of this decade Mount Isa also entered into the business of marketing of the technology through rights dating to the joint work with CSIRO in the late 1970s.So far, after five years, the third decade of the technology has been characterised by diversification of applications of the technology to areas outside the non-ferrous and precious metals production industry. The waste processing and recycle industry and the iron and steel industry have recognised that the top submerged lancing system is a new type of reactor with many significant features which provide new opportunities for processing a range of materials under good environmental controls in a cost effective manner.I hope this audience will excuse my boldness in talking about the third decade of the technology when we are only half way through! I am aiming in this paper to not only talk about the past, but to try illustrate the future directions which I envision."

Wastes when produced can be reused or recycled prior to disposal. Industries that cause environmental concerns during manufacturing include primary materials and primary metals. Pollution prevention mechanisms to achieve waste reduction require new separation, reclamation, control and process simulation technologies. Substituting recyclables for virgin resources will reduce energy use, water pollution, air pollution, water use and mining wastes. Shrinking landfill space will spur new technologies for waste treatment and recycling. These situations hence offer opportunities for innovative flowsheets with appropriate separation technologies. Development of innovative flowsheets to treat recyclables offer unique opportunities for process/product development, obtain green products and hence market advantage. The paper will illustrate with selected innovative flowsheets to treat recyclables.

I read the paper “The jackknife approach” with interest. There appears to be a widespread misunderstanding of the kriging variance as a measure of the error variance of the kriged grade estimate of an ore block. Virtually all mineral deposits display skew frequency distributions and are subject to the well-known proportional effect. Thus, it is usual to find in an ore body, when subdivided a really into subpopulations, that the variances of the grades (or the total sills of the variograms) for the subpopulations will be correlated with the corresponding mean grades (usually linearly with the squares of the mean grades). Thus, the variogram will be stationary.

This paper describes two independent building underpinning projects during the construction of the Los Angeles Metro Rail System. The first project involves pinpile underpinning of a building along the Red Line which is the main heavy-rail portion of the system. Vertical and inclined friction pinpiles were constructed, using drilling equipment in a low-overhead height space, to support underpinning grade beams. This underpinning permitted the demolition of the building caissons so that the subway tunnels could pass beneath the building unimpeded. One of the piles was statically tested in compression. The second project involves the use of traditional pit piers for the underpinning of historic buildings along the Pasadena Blue Line, which is one of the light-rail branches from the Red Line. The piers were designed for various loading conditions and to minimize differential settlement of adjacent foundations. The piers will be internally braced with steel struts to be designed by the contractor.

The western continental margin comprises of the southwest coast (Cape Comorin-Mangalore), centralwest coast or Konkan coast (Mangalore-Bombay), northwest coast (Bombay-Gulf of Kutch) and the Laccadives area. Placer deposits of heavy minerals occur in discontinuous patches on the beaches along many parts of the west coast. The richest offshore placer deposits occur along the 25 km stretch of the southwest coast from Neendakara to Kayamkulam. The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) surveys show that the sediments off the Konkan coast consist largely of silty sand, sandy silt and clay and the concentration of ilmenite is higher than the onshore. The heavy mineral concentration ranges up to 90% and has mainly ilmenite and magnetite with minor quantities of apatite, rutile, zircon, kyanite etc. The heavy mineral sands extend below the clays to water depth down to 20 m. The heavy minerals sands vary in thickness from 2-10 m. Offshore placers can be mined by using wire-line, bucket ladder and hydraulic dredges. Wire-line, bucket ladder and hydraulic dredges. Wire-line dredges may employ drag buckets or clamshell and hydraulic dredges suction or airlift principles. The dredges can be located on flat bottom or catamaran barges. Dredging of very near shore placers may be achieved by operating from land. The bucket ladder type of dredger has greater digging ability and hence can be deployed for mining placers which are partly consolidated or cemented or where the most valuable part of the deposit lies at the contact between the alluvium and the bedrock. This type operates very economically up to 45 m depth and needs minimum power requirement per unit dredged. Suction type hydraulic dredges can be operated very effectively up to 60 m water depths. This system is quite ideal for the inner shelf. The maximum practical economic working water depths for wire-line dredges are about 150 m. With the drag bucket modified into large net buckets, the method can be utilized to greater depths. They can be used in areas of high water currents and swells. The type of bucket can be changed readily with change in the nature of alluvium or substratum. The hydraulic suction dredge is the most suitable system for mining unconsolidated sediments. When the sediments are semi-unconsolidated, a cutter head can be mounted on the lower end of the suction pipe to agitate the seabed.

A review of historic mining information and geological literature pertaining to the Alpine Mine, Lyell Goldfield has been completed. As a result of this work the Alpine reef is inferred to be associated with an upright anticline with a sub-horizontal axis. Structural profiles prepared from limited underground data indicate that the reef is subparallel to the eastern limb of the anticline and cuts across the western limb. Reassessment of structural mapping completed by the New Zealand Geological Survey indicates that Greenland Group metasediments within the Lyell Goldfield are folded into a series of opposed assymetic folds with sub-horizontal axes. It is suggested that the anticline which harbours the Alpine Reef is located on the axis of a synclinorium. Along the western limb of the synclinorium the subsidiary folds have steep west dipping limbs and shallow east dipping limbs (western sense of assymmetry) whereas shallow west dips and steep east dips are typical of the eastern limb. The notion of quartz mineralisation occupying the axis of a synclinorium is contrary to the situation in the Reefton Goldfield where quartz mineralisation is affiliated with folds associated with an anticlinorium. Historic mine data reveals that below No.4 Level the quartz-gold mineralisation, in the Alpine Mine, occupied a steeply dipping ore channel. The strike of the channel was to the northwest and within this structure the are shoots plunged to the north at approximately 40¦. Archival mine plans show that two quartz bodies, the North and South Blocks, were present at No. 4 Level. Although the North Block was followed down to No 14 Level (530 m vertically below the surface outcrop) the South Block was only mined as far as No 7 Level. Sampling on No 7 Level together with the results of trial mining suggest that the grade of quartz underfoot in South Block is low. Information from the Mines Statements and mapping undertaken by the Gold Prospecting Scheme reveals that faulting had a profound influence on the intregity and extent of the Alpine Reef. The reef occupies a Inajor shear zone but little is known about it. It is also apparent that below No 7 Level the reef was progressively shattered by faulting and this may be the chief reason for the decrease in grade in the lower levels of the mine. No substantive facts are available about wall rock alteration effects adjacent to the Alpine Reef Still this is not surprising considering that comments on the mineralised pug envelope and breccias adjacent to the mined quartz shoots at the Globe - Progress Prospect were omitted from contemporary publications. In spite of this the existance of sulphide bearing reef casing lithologies cannot be completely dismissed since 9.15 m of 'reef track' has been reported in Reids No 2 Level.

Deregulation, as authorized by the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (PL102-486) allows free-market competition in the electric-utility industry. As the act unfolds, though, uncertainties abound about the type, degree and direction of impacts throughout the affected economy — from fuel suppliers to electricity generators and from power distributors to energy consumers. Instead of having a familiar base of captive customers and electricity prices fixed by negotiation with state public utility commissions, utility companies are preparing for open, free-market competition. They are looking at all areas, including fuel supply, to cut costs to remain competitive. Humorous anecdotes are told about utility companies shunning insiders for senior executive positions. Instead, they are opting for people from the telephone or other industries with deregulation experience. And there are light-hearted stories about a trend away from traditional electric-company names, such as the name of a city or state followed by Edison or Power and Light, to space-age names, such as Ameren, Entergy, Illinova or Unicom. No one wants to be left behind or be perceived to be left behind.

"A mathematical model was developed for the dissolution of particles in gas-stirred liquid baths, linking the hydrodynamic flow field of the bath, the average particle trajectory and liquid-side mass transfer controlled dissolution kinetics. The model was validated by comparison with experimental data for the dissolution rates of urea particles in gas-stirred aqueous CaCl2 solutions measured during this study. The dissolution rates of urea. particles were measured using an image analysis system.The effects of operating conditions on the dissolution rates of urea particles were investigated. It was found that the key operating parameters influencing the utilisation efficiency of particles were the gas flowrate, particle diameter and lance submergence. An optimisation of the operating conditions for the model urea-aqueous CaCl2 system indicated that the utilisation efficiency increased with decreasing gas flowrate and decreasing particle size for a given lance submergence.IntroductionThe utilisation solid reagents in molten baths varies from one process to another, depending upon the rates and mechanisms of the reactions between the particles and melts, as well as the trajectory and residence time of the particles in the melts. Previous studies have not attempted to predict the utilisation efficiency of injected solids by coupling the motion of the particle with its dissolution rate. Instead, the particles have usually been assumed to remain suspended in the bath until completely dissolved, and the mass transfer coefficients were based on the average specific mechanical energy dissipation rates in the bath. Investigations of this nature relevant to the present study have been undertaken by Apelian et al. [1], Brucato et al. [2] and Langberg and Nilmani[3]. The objective of the present study was to develop a mathematical model, incorporating both the reaction kinetics between the particles and liquid and the particle motion simultaneously, to predict the dissolution rates and times of the particles. The mathematical model was validated by comparison with experimental dissolution rates of a cold model analogue system measured using an image analysis technique, and then applied to optimise the operating conditions in the model system."

INTRODUCTION Chuquicamata mine is a large copper open pit located in the north of Chile. It has been in production for more than 80 years and now is in the later stages of its life with declining grades and increasing haul distances. As any old mine with long established organizations and procedures, it has faced one of the most difficult managerial problems: to conduct changes. Since 1994, the new management team has been devoted to a modernization pro- gram focused mainly in restructuring business operations. downsizing the labor force and introducing a mine planning pro- cess consistent with the company's goal. The explicit identification of the latter issue has been made because of the management’s conviction about the importance of it in the profitability of the business. The mine planning process at Chuquicamata mine has evolved from an old manual technique towards a modern computarized system, however the fundamental aspects and the procedures involved in this process have been the same. For in- stance, the cutoff grades policy has not changed during the last said 20 years, regardless of the changes to grade distribution, commodity prices, plant capacities, etc. To review and rethink this process, the strategy was to work with a small group of inside engineers and the management in order to interact with several mining consulting firms. The idea was to open a discussion about the fundamental principles used in the mine planning activities and, at the same time, to explore new ideas to improve the operating practices that have been followed for a long time. Thus, the goal of this paper is to present the mine planning approach that was the result of this work and the improvements that were obtained. THE CHUQUICAMATA MINE The Chuquicamata division is one of the five operations of Codelco and is currently devoted to operating the Chuquicamata mine; a copper open pit, concentrator, smelting and refining complex. It also operates Mina Sur which consists of an open pit mine, a leaching-solvent extraction and electrowinning process. There is also a dump leaching and a Sx-Ew plant for treating the low grade suifide ore (under the cutoff grade) from the Chuquicamata mine. Prior to reviewing the mine planning process, capacities for the Chuquicamata sulfide line were 640 000 tpd of run of mine material, 160 000 tpd of ore and 4 200 tpd of concentrate. This meant a total annual movement of around 230 Mt in the mine and a treatment of 57 Mt in the concentrator with a stripping ratio of approximately 3: 1. The old exploitation strategy consisted of an "open scheme", which means that all benches must have a berm with enough space to allow the traffic of large haulage trucks. This fact implied working with a great flexibility, but the consequences were flat slope angles. One of the reasons for using this operating practice in short term planning was that the grade consistency from the pit has always been a controversial variable. Schedules were designed to meet grade targets accurately and they were modified immediately when deviations become apparent. This reality led to working with a great deal of independent pushbacks and it required flexibility in the traffic system. The cutoff grade policy has been the same for a long time and the figure was 0.5 %CUT either for sulfide or oxide ore. This was the reason why a balance was produced between the mine and the concentrator. The mine is operated principally with benches of 26 m but in the upper part of the pit there are benches of 24 and 30 m. The main production equipment is shovels of 28 and 34 yd3 along with trucks of 200 and 240 st. Regarding the crushing facilities, there are two main systems located inside the pit and an old one in the periphery, close to a stockpile and near the concentrator. In the north part of the pit there is a crusher for waste material and in the north-east area is located the ore crusher facility. Both restrict a significant area of the pit and the mine sequence is considering to move the ore crusher again to the south-east sector where it used to be located. Relating to the waste crusher, the idea is to move it up to a bench near the surface in order to use the same conveyor belt and, at the same time, liberate an important sector. THE MINE PLANNING PROCESS The objective of the mine planning process is to develop a mine plan for the life of the deposit, in harmony and consistent with the company's goal. It includes the origin and destiny of tonnages and grades from the mine(s), along with the necessary resources to carry out this plan such as: fleet requirement, consumable goods, manpower, etc. From the financial point of view, it means to establish the cash flow for each time period of the mine life. That is. the revenue, capital investment and operating cost associated with each period of the plan. The fundamental principles involved in the mine planning pro- cess have been a controversial issue for a long time. One of the reasons for these divergent views could be produced by the difficulty of modeling a complete extraction policy for a geological re- source. This particular problem has to deal with several decision variables that are time dependent. So far, there is no mathematical formulation for managing such a problem, and the approach to solve it is based on a circular analysis combined with certain heuristic tools. So, a global model rather than a formula, requires a clear understanding of mine operations as well as economic theory and its application to a non-renewable resource. In order to manage this complex problem, the mine planning process can be conveniently split off in three stages which are conceptual, feasibility and operational planning. The characteristics of each stage are basically the timeliness in which they are developed and the kind and number of variables involved. There are cases where it is found that a raft foundation would have adequate factor of safety against ultimate bearing capacity failure but the settlements would be excessive. Piles may be introduced in order to limit settlements to an acceptable level. The actual number of piles required to reduce the settlements to an acceptable level may be very small compared to the number of piles required to transmit the whole structure load. The paper focuses on the difficulties encountered in evaluating the load sharing between raft and piles. An elaborate analysis taking into account the interaction between raft, piles and soil is very complex and time consuming. Few approximate methods for arriving at a satisfactory solution to piled raft system are discussed in the present paper.

Wide settlers are a way to decrease the linear velocities of advancing liquid phases. It has, however, been found unnecessary to risk a proper settler performance by building shallow settlers in order to avoid a so-called interface turbulence due to a too big difference between the linear velocities of the organic and the aqueous phase. This conclusion has been reached from tests using a large transparent settler model, where the behaviour of a clean interface between two advancing liquids has been investigated. Also in a more realistic case, making an organic in aqueous or an aqueous in organic dispersion to move between the liquid phases, no obstacle has been found to use a somewhat more deep and correspondingly ore slowly t10wing aqueous phase. Based on above findings, support can be given to a new trend to build the settlers slightly deeper than what has been typical for the so-called low-profile design. In this way, it is much easier to avoid an excessive air introduction and other severe difficulties, like those caused by crud moving from one stage to another. It is further shown, how gravity can be used to slow down and distribute a dispersion being fed into a settler of a VSF unit. Entrainment levels have been found to be reduced by a careful design of primary dispersion distributors and picket fences of the settler. Finally, it is demonstrated, how outlets from the side of the settler can be used to simplity interstage pumping and to decrease the rotation speed of any pumping device.

Treatment of industrial wastewaters generally advances with specific chemical concentration and mass-flow targets, established by National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. Treated discharges must also address toxicity to test and receiving water organisms. Various parameters might need consideration during treatment design and planning, such as the known toxicants, hardness, alkalinity, solids, nutrients, metals in both the dissolved and particulate state, and even flow. Since toxicity is used as a "catch all" regulatory monitoring tool, design of treatment systems should focus on the various factors contributing to toxicity.

"HIsmelt has faced and overcome many challenges in the understanding and development of injection technologies that satisfy process and engineering requirements for further scale up to a commercial plant.An overview of the design basis of bottom and top injection systems with plant results are described in this paper.IntroductionAn appropriate way to introduce this paper is to initially reflect on the genesis of the HIsmelt Process.It is appropriate that Professor Womer is the one we are honouring as it can be claimed that by the involvement of CRA in the WORCRA process that the concepts for irijection systems in iron and steel pyrometallurgical processes achieved significant attention by the company. The development of water cooled injection lances and their application injecting solids and gases with success was certainly a pre-cursor to the development of other injection systems commonly used today in arc furnaces and for top injection at HIsmelt.HistOrically it was the work of Savard and Lee in Canada with shrouded tuyeres and the subsequent commercialisation of this technology at the Maxhiitte Steelworks spawning the suite of bottom oxygen blown process as known as QBOP; OBM and the subsequent combined blowing process such as KOBM that first commercially succeeded in injecting solids under a molten metal bath. The next progressive step from the injection of calcined lime in the technology development was the injection of coal for coal gasification as developed by Klöckner technologies being called KG, KSG and KMS and also the injection of coal for increased scrap melting.A paradigm shift in thought process to leap from steelmaking and coal gasification to direct smelting by injecting coal and iron ore into a molten metal bath in the correct stoichiometric ratio to maintain the bath at a constant temperature and carbon level was the true genesis .of HIsmelt.A good overview of the state of the art of tuyere type injection technology is given in Ref. 1."

A review of concepts and theories for predicting thermodynamic solution properties of multi- component high temperature liquid solutions is reviewed. During the last 50 years the ability to predict :such properties for molten salts, silicates and metals based on the generally known properties of the lower order (often binary) systems has been developed and shown to provide predictions which are quite useful in science and technology. There are many gaps in our understanding of these high temperature solutions, especially for metals, and considerably more work is needed.

Inexpensive and effective means of delivering courses to mining engineers who live at remote and scattered locations remains to be a challenging issue. Computer-based instructorless but interactive multimedia delivery is a good substitute to traditional short courses and one-way broadcasts. Such a system, enhanced with a wide area network, is an inexpensive alternative to two-way broadcasts and even to a traditional university. Course material can either be delivered on compact disks (CDs) or on-line from the host servers over the phone lines using a personal computer and a modem. Although technically not feasible using ordinary telephone service lines at the present time without further modification, advances in this field indicate that this up and coming medium may dominate the competition in the future. This paper investigates the present and the future of this technology and discusses the experiences gained in creating and disseminating a prototype multimedia CD which was created at the Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Institute of the University of Missouri-Rolla to teach a portion of a course in Ground Control. The hardware and software used in creating the audio, 3-0 graphics, animation dips, video clips, and movies are listed. The structure of the program and the way how interactivity was achieved is explained in detail.

The need for the removal of mercury from the precious metals extraction circuits may be influenced by process, environmental, as well as by occupational hazard reasons. In these circuits mercury is mainly present as cyanide complexes. The effectiveness of any stabilization method will be influenced by the high thermodynamic stability mercury-cyano species exhibit in an aqueous solution. In this study, we have investigated the utility of the trisodium salt of trimmercapto-s-triazine (TMT) for precipitation of mercury from the corresponding cyano-complexes. The influence of pH molar ratio of TMT to Hg, coagulant and flocculant additions, excess of free cyanide, as well as the presence of other metal-cyano species on the effectiveness of mercury precipitation were investigated in detail. Also, a "teal world" precious metals mill effluent initially containing ~7 ug/mL (ppm) of Hg was treated and A was found that greater than 99.8% of the mercury was removed from the solution as am insoluble Hg/TMT complex.

China was the world’s leading producer of barite during 1995 with 35%. The United States followed with14%. India produced 9%. Other producers included Morocco, Turkey, Mexico and Germany. Domestic production of barite during 1995 was estimated to be 600 kt (660,000 st). Nevada produced 85% of the total. Georgia was the second leading barite-producing state. The United States is the world’s largest consumer of barite. During 1995, it used 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st). US reliance on imported barite during 1995 was about 63%of total consumption, according to the US Geological Survey.

This paper presents the results of grinding tests performed on magnetite from Kiruna (Sweden) and on chromite from Skoumtza (Macedonia. Greece). Stresses were measured by XRD, which determined the variations in the characteristic structural spacings of the minerals both before and after, grinding in a HSM/250 Herzog laboratory ring mill. Anal Isis of the magnetite and c hromite crystallinstallin was performed hi measuring the broadening of the strongest diffraction peak (311). .Also, structural analysis on chromite was carried out using the Mikheev model. Ultrafine-grinding tests on the magnetite and chomite demonstrated that this type of treatment can induce profound variations m the surface-stress state. These included plastic variations of the cell followed by "chemical" stress with oxidation front the stricture to form hydroxide or carbonate, films. This can have a great influence on the mineral reactivity to flotation reagents
