"At Craigmont Mines Limited, Merritt, B.C., tests were begun in March, 1965 to evaluate the use of shotcrete as a method of ground support m development headings; previously, ail drifts had. required support, which was accomplished mainly by timber and occasionally by the use of rockbolts. The tests demonstrated conclusively the effectiveness of shotcrete for supporting Craigmont's ground. Gradually, the use of timber for ground support was virtually eliminated in favour of shotcrete. This paper describes the equipment used, the operation of the equipment, pertinent cast data and opera ting details. Also discussed are other uses developed for the shot-creting equipment, the use of reinforcing bar rockbolts, and a method used at Craigmont for lining long vertical ore passes with steel plate and concrete as part of the raising cycle."

Man had to learn to break rocks as early as the Stone Age, when they formed his main source of raw material. He started with chipping and over the years has reached a stage where he can employ atomic blasts and break, with one blast, millions of tons of rock. In between these two extremes there have been several stages of development including firesetting, use of the expansion of water on freezing in chipped cracks in cold climates, the use of low or deflagrating explosive black powder in about the 17th century, the use of high explosives with the discovery of nitroglycerine in 1846 by Sobrero, followed by the monumental discoveries of the great Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The attempts to develop a stronger and still stronger explosive force were accompanied by investigations to understand the mechanism of failure of rock so that the force could be used to the best advantage; the latter, of course, have lagged far behind the former. This is mainly due to the fact that the chemical reactions involving high explosives as well as the processes resulting in the breakage of rock take place at too great a rate to be studied with the equipment that has been only recently available. Moreover, the development of stronger explosive forces was prompted by military necessities in the past and competition, at present, among highly developed nations. As part of an overall laboratory and plant test program to determine mixing and other techniques relating to the more economic use of bentonite as an iron ore pellet binder, a settling test was developed for measuring the bentonite content within a pellet or within a batch of pellets. Between pellet batches, each containing a different level of bentonite, the dry fracture load is directly proportional to the bentonite content between pellets of the same batch, however, the fracture load is inversely proportional to the bentonite level; this is explained by a negative correlation between a pellet's size and its bentonite content and the fact that larger pellets can withstand a higher fracture load than the smaller.

3.1-1. Purpose. Development drilling is directed towards determining the grade, volume, and three-dimensional outline of a mineralized zone previously located by exploration. It is distinguished from exploration or reconnaissance drilling, which has as an objective the discovery of new mineralized areas. A development drilling and bulk sampling program should furnish the following information: 1. Geology of the mineralized zone. 2. Quantitative data on grade and tons of material within pertinent cutoff limits. 3. Physical size and shape of the deposit. Areas underlain by waste as well as ore. 4. Mineralogica1 and metallurgical characteristics of the ore. 5. I1hysical characteristics of the ore. 6. Hulk samples for metallurgical testing and grade check. 7. Data on other factors that could affect mining operations, such as ground water, ground conditions, etc. 3.1-2. Procedures. There are numerous methods and techniques that are used to acquire pertinent data on a potential ore deposit. The total cost and accuracy of a development program depends on significant evaluation of the geology, proper selection of a drilling method, thorough analysis of sample data, and accurate evaluation of all the information. Knowledge of the geology of the mineral deposit is important in planning the development testing program and in evaluating the data obtained from such a program. Exploration work usually provides some significant information on the general size, shape, thickness, grade, and geology of the deposit. In some cases no further data are needed; in many cases geological complexities suggested by the preliminary work require further geological study. Of considerable importance may be the following:

The solubility of chromium in liquid silver and that of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin have been determined by equilibrating Ike Liquid in a crucible of the solule metal. Generally the weight of solute in solulion was delermined both chemically and from crucible weight losses. The resulting weight percent solubilily of chromium in silver as a function of absolule temperature T is given by log w = -6660/T + 4.02 in the range 960° to 1445°C, and that of molybdenlttrl in tin by log w = —5050/T + 1. 79 in the range 1200° to 2200°C. The values appear unaffected by minor changes in solute composition. Calculations aye made of the parlial molar heal and excess entropy of mixing. The estimated solubility of tungsten in tin is 0.001 pct at 2000°C. Evidence is presented that molybdenwm dissolves in tin without compound for mation and that tungsten and tin form W10Sn. RECENT developments in coatings, heat transfer, and brazing require a knowledge of equilibrium solubilities in a variety of systems at elevated temperatures. Of particular interest are solid-liquid interactions in metal systems involving dilute solutions. This investigation was undertaken since little is known about the phase relations or solubility of chromium in liquid silver or of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin.1,2 EXPERIMENTAL WORK As indicated in Table I, high-purity metals or those of known impurity levels were used. Crucibles were machined from chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten bar stock 1.3 cm diam and 2.2 cm long. Chromium rod was prepared by arc melting and extruding iodide process crystals.3 The five chromium impurity alloys were in the form of 0.6-cm-diam swaged rod. A Cr-0.06N* alloy was prepared by exposure to NH3 at 1150°C in a closed quartz capsule for 24 hr. Because significant nitrogen was lost during annealing in argon at 1600°C,4 the estimated level was 0.01 pct N. Chromium and Mo,W crucibles were outgassed at 1200" and 1600°C, respectively, at 3 X 10-5 mm. The solvent was placed In crucibles of the solute metal- 6 g Ag in chromium, 0.4 g Ag in the five chromium impurity alloys, and 4 g Sn in Mo,W crucibles. The silver and tin series were outgassed at 900" and 110O°C, respectively, and held at the desired solution temperature in a tantalum resistance furnace under 1.05 atm 99.995 pct Ar. An equilibration time of 0.5 to 1 hr was chosen since 0.3-, I-, and 4-hr anneals at 1235°C for Cr-Ag yielded similar results. Temperatures were measured optically to +10°C under essentially black body conditions which were checked against the melting point of silver. The Cr-Ag and Mo-Sn,W-Sn series were respectively equilibrated at 990° to 1400°C and 1200" to 2000°C. Vaporization losses were generally held to <1 pct by the argon. In the 1800" and 2000°C anneals for 0.5 hr, the crucibles were placed in tightly sealed tantalum cans which kept tin losses to <5 pct. After the anneals, the specimens were furnace-cooled. One anneal was made on small Mo-0.02 C, Mo-0.5Ti-0.lZr, and tungsten crucibles containing tin at 2200°C. The metals were sealed in an electron-beam-welded tantalum can of minimum volume. After the anneal, tin was still present in each crucible, none of which was severely attacked. After equilibration, the saturated solvent metal was selectively removed from the crucible by acid leaching. Weight losses sustained by the crucibles were determined from the initial weight minus the final blank-corrected weight after acid leaching. Chemical analyses were performed on some of the samples. Hot 1:l HNO3-H2O removed silver from chromium with the blank running <0.1 mg or <0.002 pct on measured solubility. Tin was removed from molybdenum and tungsten by hot concentrated HC1 with the respective blanks amounting to -0.004 and -0.0004 pct in the presence of tin. The insoluble residues were weighed and checked for composition. The leaching solutions contained traces of the solute metals which were analyzed by colorimetric methods, Diphenyl Carbazide for chromium, Thiocyanate for molybdenum, and Dithiol for tungsten. The total of the two percentages found from the residue and leaching solution minus the blank gave the desired solubility values. On the basis of annealing empty molybdenum and tungsten crucibles, weight losses due to MoO3 or WO3 volatilization were found to be generally 10.4 mg and affect measured solubilities by <0.01pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Chromium-Silver . Since no intermediate compounds are reported to form in the Cr-An system,&apos; crucible weight losses and chemical analysis of the entire melt should provide reliable measures of the chromium in solution. Values obtained by the two methods are in agreement as shown by the results for unalloyed chromium in Table II and plotted in Fig. 1. Furthermore, the results are consistent with those previously determined by melting equilibrated silver out of the crucible and analyzing calorimetrically for chromium.&apos; On the basis of limited thermal analysis data, the solubility of chromium in silver has been quoted as 8 pct at the monotectic temperature of -1445°C.1 This investigation indicates an extrapolated solubility of 1.38 pct which is believed to be more reliable. The potential use of prereduced pellets in the burden of the blast furnace continues to be a topic of interest. Several excellent papers have been written describing the theoretical and experimental rewards. (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) Significant increases in iron output and substantial savings in coke consumption are major advantages over conventional iron oxide pellets. The savings are especially important in areas where good coking coal is at a premium. Lower handling and transportation costs may also be factors favoring prereduction. When considering the overall cost of making and smelting prereduced materials the optimum metallization level becomes significant. An analysis by Agarwal and Pratt of the thermodynamic aspects of blast furnace operation with all prereduced pellets shows that the criteria controlling coke consumption depends upon the degree of reduction and upon the percentage of oxygen (present as FeO) removed by solution loss.(8) The authors state that although the chances of obtaining large fuel savings are greatly improved when metallization is high, reduction to the highest degree, which is costly, may not result in the lowest energy requirement per ton of hot metal; thus, over reduction could possibly result in wasted energy in the blast furnace.

Measurments of the transient photoconductivity in fillns of amorphous selenium with blocking- contacts haue been used in studying the transport properties. The results shozu that the transport of free carviers cannot be explained in terms of a model using bulk trapping. Measurments of the photocurrent-applied field characteristic as a unction of sample thickness do not pvoduce the scaling lau,s approps-iate lo a range-limited model. THE investigation described here was undertaken to explore the mechanisms of transport in amorphous selenium films. These films are used in xerography, where a photoconductor is charged electrostatically and then exposed to light to form a latent image. The sensitivity that one can expect when operating in this mode is directly related to the transport properties of the photoconductor material. The study of photoconductivity at high fields in insulating materials is often complicated by contact effects. Injection from the contacts can easily mask the fundamental transport processes that are being studied. A technique is described in this paper that allows a study of photoconductivity and transport processes in amorphous selenium films without the complicating effects introduced by contacts. Accordingly, the samples are prepared using insulating films between the sample and the metal electrodes, where the electrodes are capacitively coupled to the surfaces of the sample under study. A transient measurement is performed with pulsed light, and the photocurrent measured near the beginning of the pulse before the field is distorted by polarization at the blocking elec- trodes. A similar method has been described by Manyl using pulsed electric fields in studying the high field transport in insulating cadmium sulfide. EXPERIMENTAL It is possible to eliminate undesirable contact effects and maintain uniform high fields across the sample by using blocking electrodes and measuring the current-field characteristic under transient conditions. The sample configuration is shown schematically in Fig. 1. Each of the gold electrodes is separated from the amorphous selenium film by a layer of insulating plastic (Formvar) approximately 2000~ thick. The electrode on the front surface is semi-transparent to allow illumination of the sample. The whole configuration is mounted on a KEL-F substrate, which is a transparent insulating plastic having a thermal expansion coefficient that allows low-temperature measurements without cracking the selenium film. Fig. 2 shows a block diagram of the measurement apparatus. Light was obtained from a 450-w Xenon arc lamp, the intensity of which was controlled by stainless-steel screen filters and monitored by a pho-tomultiplier which was calibrated periodically against a thermopile. A camera shutter operated at 1/200 sec provided the light pulse and a synchronized signal to the oscilloscope. The photocurrent transient is ob-served with a high-speed picoammeter (response time of 1 msec) the output of which is displayed on an oscilloscope. The applied voltage is constant throughout the transient measurement. The selenium films were prepared by evaporation of four 9&apos;s pure selenium shot supplied by Canadian Copper Refiners. Spectrographic analysis showed about 1 ppm of Te and Fe, 5 ppm of C1, and 0.05 ppm

The mineral aggregate industry is the world&apos;s largest mining and processing endeavor, yet it is graced with little of the romance or public awareness that accompanies mention of gold, silver, iron, copper, uranium, or aluminum mining efforts. Much of this reaction is undoubtedly due to the fact that the uses to which crushed stone and sand and gravel are normally put are not fully recognized or appreciated by the general public. Few individuals ever have occasion to purchase mineral aggregates for anything other than use for decorative shrubbery beds or walkways. They may, however, buy ready-mix concrete for a new patio, bituminous concrete for a new driveway, concrete blocks, or other building materials for a new room and never realize that the primary ingredients of their purchases are either direct or indirect products of the mineral aggregate industry. The average person driving past an operating crushed stone quarry or an active sand and gravel pit rarely realizes the economic impact the industry, represented by that operation, exercises on the general economy. He is not aware, nor does he really care, that elements of the modern comfortable environment to which he has grown accustomed rely to a great extent on the products of the crushed stone and sand and gravel industries Iron and steel, glass, cement, agriculture, and highway and building construction are but a few of the major industries to whom the products of the mineral aggregate industry are basic. Without these industries or without the stone, sand, and gravel basic to them, most of the major elements of our modern day civilization would be non-existent.

The Magma mine at Superior, Arizona, has produced over 13 million tons of ore yielding 1.5 billion pounds of copper. It is a mesathermal deposit, and, although the bulk of the ore has come from the Magma vein, most of the recent production has come from replacement deposits in limestone. The mine lies in a Precambrian and Paleozoic sequence of rocks that includes schist, diabase, quartzite, shale, and limestone; nearby, these rocks are intruded by igneous bodies of Mesozoic age that were probably the source of the ore-bearing fluids. Locally, these rocks are overlain by Cenozoic volcanic rocks and conglomerate. Layered rocks at the mine dip eastward about 30°. The area is extensively faulted, and surface faults are grouped into an earlier east-trending set and a later northtrending set. An additional set of diagonal faults that trends northwest and northeast is recognized underground. The east-trending Magma vein-fault, with its splits and branches, is the principal mineralized structure of the district. The bulk of the ore occurs in large ore shoots that plunge steeply westward and are sporadically connected by irregular ore shoots dipping gently eastward. The main ore controls apparently are selective zones of permeability related to the transverse faults. A bed of crystalline limestone near the base of the Martin Limestone (Devonian) is the host for the replacement ore bodies-discontinuous tabular pods dipping eastward parallel to the bedding. Selective permeability is again the apparent ore control, caused both by local hydrothermal solution of limestone and by deformation along faults. The principal copper minerals in the vein are chalcopyrite, bornite, enargite, tennantite, chalcocite, and digenite; these minerals vary in abundance according to a distinct zoning pattern. The upper part of the mine yielded considerable zinc as sphalerite, and the oxidized zone was rich in silver. The chief gangue minerals are pyrite, quartz, and hematite. In the limestone replacement bodies, chalcopyrite and bornite are the chief ore minerals.

Preliminary studies showed that direct hydrolysis of H2SiF6 to SiO2 and HF at elevated temperatures was subject to many mechanical difficulties, and that corrosion of construction materials was a serious problem. Elimination of SiO2 from the HF product was generally poor. An alternative procedure, hydrolysis of lime-neutralized H2SiF6 by steam at 950° to 1,100° C, yielded a product very low in SiO2. Condensates containing up to 300 g/1 HF were prepared.

"ChairmanThis part of the discussion is intended as an exchange of information between those who have installed rubber liners in their mills and a means of others to get information that may help them decide if rubber liners would be applicable to their mills.To start the discussion and to relate it to the previous section of this symposium Mine Equipment Co. Ltd. have supplied some graphs that will give some idea of the noise suppression that may be expected from the u.se of rubber liners instead of steel. The figures used in preparing the graphs came from installations of rubber liners in Sweden.L. Strah - Mine Equipment Co.The graph, Figure 1, shows on the bottom the octave band range. The noise level generated by the steel liners is represented by the dotted line and lies within the shaded area where it is considered that hearing damage may result. The solid line represents the noise level generated by rubber liners in the same mill and you will see it is below the shaded area. Although it is not marked on the graph I think the decibel range is from 7 5 to 115. The next one, Figure 2 which shows the relative noise levels generated by steel balls and pebbles with both steel and rubber liners shows the decibel range."

HUNT and Jackson&apos; have recently suggested that binary eutectics might be classified according to the entropy of fusion of the component phases. Such a classification was in fact proposed2 some time ago by the authors and the purpose of this communication is to present some supporting evidence. As pointed out by Hunt and Jackson&apos; typical metals of low entropy of fusion, ?S, tend to form normal eutectics (using Scheil&apos;s terminology3). Where one phase is metallic (low ?S) and the other nonmetallic (high AS) then anomalous structures are formed. These anomalous structures may either be regular (e.g., Bi-Sn)or irregular (e.g., A1-Si). Finally Hunt and Jackson suggest that where both phases are of high ?S regular faceted structures are formed. In the proposed classification2 the ratio of the entropies of fusion is taken as the quantitative parameter, i.e., ?Sa/?SB = E, where e > 1.0. An extensive literature survey has been carried out2,4 for reliable photomicrographs of eutectic structures. The structures, numbering 151, have been classified into two classes, viz., normal (i.e., lamellar and rodlike) and anomalous. The latter group has been arbitrarily subdivided into regular and irregular anomalous eutectics. Details and sources of the structures are given elsewhere.2,4 In the absence of better thermodynamic data the value of E has been determined for each of the systems making the following assumptions and approximations: l) The entropy of fusion of solid solutions may be calculated additively;5 ii) Inter metallic compounds are treated similarly but with the addition of the following term for fully ordered structures.5 -4.573(Ni lOg10 Nl + N2 log10 N2) where Nl and N2 are the atomic fractions. It might be argued that the entropies of fusion are meaningless as the eutectic phases form at some temperature (T,°K) below their true melting point (Ta or Tb). As AS, = Lo/To if La the latent heat of fusion of a, is assumed independent of temperature, the actual entropy change AS& is given by La/Te. The ratio of entropies of fusion then becomes Fig. 1 shows E&apos; plotted against cumulative totals for normal and anomalous systems from which it is seen that normal eutectics predominate at low values of E&apos;; e.g., some 90 pct of normal systems lie below E&apos; = 1.5 with 65 pct of anomalous systems above this value. Fig. 1 also shows that the regular anomalous structures occur mostly at low values of c&apos; possibly suggesting growth more akin to normal than anomalous growth. The choice of c as a classification parameter was based on nucleation concepts, it being observed that metals widely separated in Sundquist and Mondolfo&apos;s8 nucleation series were anomalous and those close together normal. The basis of these classification views is really outside the intended scope of this communication but it is hoped to explain them fully in the near future.7 Having arrived at this entropy of fusion classification by nucleation considerations it is interesting to note that Hunt and Jackson&apos;s ideas are based on growth considerations. Elsewhere one of the authors4 has shown that an even better classification of the metallographic structures reviewed is obtained from purely conventional heterogeneous nucleation concepts. It has been found that systems having a value of the parameter +b less than 0.28 are almost certainly normal and above this anomalous: V, is the gram atomic volume. This parameter is nevertheless closely related to c and c&apos;, these being an approximation of p. The parameter is also related to the other classification3,8,9 which have met with any success in the past. Recently reported high -temperatlnre thermal data have been incorporated in a reuieu&apos; of the therinody-r~ar,zic propesties of iron. The recent data permit mot corlsisterlt and reliuble choices to be made for many of the pvoperties, resnlling in bettev eslablished tabrtlations of the thermodynamic functions. Values of Cp, h°t- - H°298. s°t - S2sa, and (G°T -H298/T are tabulated for -the solid and liquid phases of iron in both stable and melastable regions. Consistency of the tabulations has been maintained to the precision necessr~vg to yield the Gibbs energy change belween the bcc (a, 8) and fcc (y) phases of iron at temperatures pertinenl to alloy studies. THE importance of the metal iron has stimulated many investigations of its thermodynamic properties at elevated temperatures. Reviews and summaries of the data have appeared from time to time. Among these the 1951 paper of Darken and smith&apos; deserves highest recognition for the quality of its criticism and for the precision and thermodynamic consistency of its tabulations. These and the more recent table of Kaufman, Clougherty, and weiss2 reproduce the Gibbs energy of the (a, 6)--Y transformation with sufficient sensitivity for alloy studies. Other recent compilations of equal validity3-&apos; make no attempt to do this. Since this Gibbs energy change is not greater than 22 cal per g-atom over the temperature range 1100° to 1800°K, it is obviously desirable to tabulate values of (G°t - H298)/T to four places of decimals even though the absolute accuracy would not warrant such precision. The necessity for reconsideration of the problem is emphasized by the recent publication of several important researches on the enthalpy and heat capacity of iron. The older work is well-covered in the reviews cited and will be mentioned here only when actually employed in the tabulations. GAMMA IRON Transition temperatures are taken from the selec -tions of Elliott and Gleiser,5 based on the work of Boulanger7 and earlier workers. For the a-y (A3) transition at 1184°K we retain the value 215 cal per g-atom adopted by Darken and smith.&apos; It has received confirmation in the recent work of Dench and Kubaschewski,&apos; and of Braun8 using adiabatic calori-metry, and of Wallace, Sidles, and Danielson10 using a pulse heating technique. The enthalpy data of Olette and ferrier" and of Anderson and Hultgren12 at higher and lower temperatures may be extended to 1184°K to give the following values which are adjusted to the required value of ? 1184 Ha,1184 Ha 298 = 8030 cal per g-atom [11 hr,1184-ha298 = 8245 cal per g-atom [2]

In a previous paper presented at the 1966 Annual Meeting of AIME we reported our work, conducted at the Pennsylvania State University, on the hydrocyclone washing of fine coal.&apos; The initial evaluation based on that work demonstrated the feasibility of hydrocyclones as fine-coal cleaning devices, and in that previous paper we presented selected test data that showed in principle how product yield and assay respond to variations of the major cyclone operating variables. The present paper reports in greater detail on the findings and presents a comprehensive evaluation of our data as follows: ? Hydrocyclone throughput rates were related to feed pressure and other variables by regression equations. These equations are compared with other capacity- versus-pressure drop expressions taken from the literature on classification cyclones.

The Boulder batholith is a composite intrusive in which the Butte quartz monzonite is the dominant rock type. Quartz porphyry dikes intruded the quartz monzonite in directions which were subsequently followed by the eastwest- striking Anaconda system of veins, the earliest major veins in the district. Anaconda veins are faulted by northwest-striking veins of the Blue system, which are most prominent in the central third of the district. Anaconda veins are the major producers in the western third of the district and also in the eastern third, where the "horsetail" zones break off from them. Individual oreshoots are thousands of feet long as well as deep on both systems of veins, but they are generally more persistent and thicker on the Anaconda veins. Viewed broadly, the mineralization in the big veins is arranged in crudely concentric zones of zinc and manganese around a central zone of copper. Only slightly offset from these zones, but earlier structurally, is a zone in which quartz-molybdenite veinlets are prominent. This zone tops at about the 2800 level and widens downward. The pattern of distribution of Cu-Fe-S series minerals in the large veins of the copper zone is not symmetrical with respect to the metal zones. There is a fringe of chalcopyrite-bornite all around the copper front. However, within the copper zone, pyrite-chalcocite-enargitecovellite- digenite assemblages are prevalent near its eastern edge from the 3800 level to the surface, whereas deep on the large Anaconda veins in the western part of the copper zone, chalcopyrite is dominant. Here the chalcopyrite grades upward into bornite-chalcocite ores and eastward into the high-sulfur assemblages of the Leonard mine. Sericite-biotite-K-feldspar alteration envelopes, containing up to about 2 per cent copper as chalcopyrite, are present on some of the quartz-molybdenite veinlets at deep mine levels in the molybdenite zone. These envelopes contrast sharply mineralogically and chemically with the later sericitic and argillic alteration envelopes around Main Stage veins. K'0-Ar'0 ratios indicate that they may be older by about 4 m.y. Secondarily enriched copper ores are mined in the Berkeley pit in the southeastern part of the district. At the present time they account for about half of Butte's production of copper.

A computer program was written for the design of a shell and tube heat exchanger on a price optimum basis for the following conditions: (1) Triangular pitch; (2) single or multiple pass; (3) heating or cooling; (4) no change in phase; and (5) inside pumping costs immaterial. Price optimum design was obtained for four standard tube sizes and standard pitch. The inside pressure drop was fixed and outside pressure drop was computed for the optimum baffle spacing and when the baffle spacing equaled the shell diameter. Standard shells whose areas equaled or exceeded the required area were also listed. The program was made adaptable to various fluids and to various tube sizes and pitch by reading in many of the required data such as physical properties of the fluids, tube data, and standard shell data in tabular form.

9.5-1. Introduction. The use of pipelines to transport solids has been successfully accomplished with many different materials. One of the oldest applications is the dredging and placing of hydraulic fill. Many installations have been made and operated for long periods of time with excellent dependability, low operating cost, and low maintenance. It is not the aim of this chapter to give the engineer the answers from which to design a pipeline, but rather to supply helpful information from which to start the project. There are several phases of solids pipelining which as yet have not lent themselves to quick engineering answers. Investigations have been carried on by many, with several theories advanced by the various investigators. In recent years certain notable theoretical advances in hydraulic transportation have been achieved. Vertical transport, using balanced "leg" operation, now appears competitive with other forms of vertical transportation. In addition, horizontal transport utilizing capsules has been proven experimentally to be attractive because of lower pressure drop than the conventional methods of solid transport in fluid media. With the aid of the computer, the laborious calculations associated with pumping calculations have been greatly simplified; and with this tool the pipeline engineers of the future will undoubtedly be able to develop a more comprehensive understanding of solids-fluid transport. 9.5-2. Theory. There have been many excellent studies made and information is available in the literature, but a general comprehensive theory of pipeline transportation of solids has not been advanced. The existing flow theories will give approximations for minimum and optimum flow velocities, friction head losses, energy requirements, and pump and pipe size The principles of dynamic similarity and scaling laws are well understood for the flow of pure liquids. There are no firm methods of scaling slurry pipelines of small diameter to larger diameters except for a few empirical.

The Atlantic City district encompasses several districts and has been previously called by different names, e.g., Atlantic gold district, Atlantic City-South Pass mining district, and Sweetwater mining district. The district is located in a terrane of folded and faulted early Precambrian metamorphic rocks which lies near the south end of the Wind River Range in Fremont County, Wyoming, Historically it is a gold district of little production, but today is an iron district of considerable importance. Gold was discovered in placer deposits about 1842 and in quartz-arsenopyrite veins about 1867, after which there occurred a mining boom lasting a few years. Minor, intermittent gold production from placers and lodes has continued to date, but the total production has probably not exceeded a few millions of dollars. Past lode mining was generally shallow ( in the oxidized zone), the deepest about 3 60 feet. The deeper, less oxidized and sulfide ores on the same lodes have not been explored. They appear to hold the only hope for future gold mining. Sedimentary iron-formation, similar to the Lake Superior taconite, occurs in the northern part of the district. Locally, where the ironformation is thickened by folds and faults, sufficient tonnages are present to be minable, as at Iron Mountain, where the U.S. Steel Corporation produces about 1.3 million tons of iron-ore pellets annually. Exploration of the iron deposits began in 1954, and the first ironore pellets were shipped to Provo, Utah in August 1962. Indicated reserves of iron-formation (about 30 per cent Fe) are reported to be about 300 million tons.

The purpose of this study was to provide basic information to aid further research on beryllium mineral flotation. Contact-angle and microflotation (Hallimond tube) methods were used to study collector action and flotation response of beryllium minerals and associated gangue minerals with representative commercial surfactants. Chrysoberyl received prime attention. Results indicated that selective flotation of beryl and chrysoberyl from fluorite and quartz is possible with sodium isooctyl phosphate below pH 2, and fluorite and topaz are readily collected by both anionic and cationic surfactants. Several modifying reagents were studied at one pH and one level of collector concentration. Aluminum sulfate, starch, and sodium silicate proved to be depressants in chrysoberyl flotation.

Van Stone mine area is situated at the head of Onion Creek on the northwest flank of Gillette Mountain, Stevens County, Washington. The di strict was found during World War I, but the mine did not come into production until 1952. Production to the end of 1965 was 2,242,960 tons of ore that yielded 10,700 tons of lead concentrates and 120,000 tons of zinc concentrates. The area is part of the Selkirk Mountains Zinc-Lead Belt, or Kootenay Arc, extending from near Revelstoke, British Columbia, to Colville, Washington. A thick but incomplete section of Paleozoic marine formations occurs in the Kootenay Arc and is overlain by marine and continental Mesozoic formations. Both are invaded by Late Mesozoic-Tertiary batholiths. The belt is characterized by open complex folding and extensive high-angle and local thrust faulting. Principal ore deposits occur in the highly deformed carbonate rocks of Cambrian age-the Maitlen (Laib) and Metaline formations. The Van Stone mine occurs along a steeply S-shaped fold lying between the Kaniksu Batholith on the west and the Rogers Mountain Fault, a northeast-trending fault on the west flank of the Gillette Mountain Anticline, to the southeast. The fold is cut by northeasttrending faults containing notoriously irregular lamprophyric, diabasic, and pebble dikes. The host rocks, lower Paleozoic dolomites, are decolorized, silicified, and silicated in the mine area. Jasperoid and tremolite are the common alteration minerals. Other gangue minerals are barite, pyrite, brucite, calcite, and, near the batholith, pyrrhotite. Ore minerals are galena, jamesonite, and sphalerite. Ore minerals occur in bunches and pods intergrown with tremolite and jasperoid. Zinc is roughly eight times more abundant than lead. The highest ore outcrops at 3870 feet elevation, and an undeterminable portion has been removed by glacial scour. The lowest drill hole penetration has reached 3220 feet elevation. Oxidation ranges up to several hundred feet in depth and may be most closely related to pre-glacial groundwater circulation. The area of the mine was completely over-ridden by Pleistocene continental glaciers, and the present erosion surface is nearly continuously blanketed by up to 150 feet of glacial outwash.
