The Bureau of Mines developed a rapid test method for predicting the stability of motor gasoline during long-term storage. The amounts of gum and inorganic residue formed in 13 gasolines during a l6-hour oven test at 200° F were compared with the amounts formed in the same gasolines stored at 110° F, and analyzed following 8-, 16-, 32-, 44-, and 52-week storage periods. Satisfactory methods were developed for predicting gum and inorganic residue formation during fuel storage periods as long as 32 weeks at 110° F, the approximate equivalent of 5.7 years at 80° F. The only data required to apply the methods are the amount of gum and inorganic residue formed, and the amount of oxygen that reacted, during a l6-hour oven test. A direct relationship existed between inorganic residue formed during the oven test and during 110° F storage. Statistical treatment of the data showed predicted values were as reliable as determined values. By use of a modified Arrhenius equation, the 110° F storage time can be extrapolated to equivalent time at any temperature below 110° F. Thus by combining the stability prediction method with the mathematical extrapolation, the storage performance of motor gasoline for extended periods can be estimated at any temperature up to 110° F.

The recent concern for the recovery of even the finest fractions of coal preparation plant feeds has created needs for new equipment. Thermal dryers currently available have difficulty reducing the filter cake moisture on down to the desired point. This difficulty involves 1) the physical problem of handling this wet, sticky material and making each particle accessible to the hot gases, and 2) removing the extremely fine dried particles from the cooled gases. The dryer described in this paper handles the first of these problems, and eliminates the second by the substitution of steel balls for air as the heat transfer medium. As a general statement, the cost of preparing coal for market is inversely proportional to the size of the lumps or particles. In the not too distant past the finer sizes were discarded as being uneconomical to treat and this practice might be still continuing if it were not for the insistence of the public that this material be kept out of our streams. This being the only cost-free outlet, the disposal of fine refuse became a significant item of expense in every preparation plant. When this happened it was only reasonable to look to the recovery of the values in this material, not only to defray this expense, but to reduce the tonnage which had to be wasted. There seemed to be no device available suited to reducing the moisture in this material to what the market requires. All of the fine coal dryers commonly employed make use of air to bring the heat of combustion into contact with the coal particles. Any device employing air as a heat transfer medium, has the following two strikes against it in attempting to handle 28 mesh by 0 filter cake: 1) It is practically impossible to bring the hot air into intimate contact with the enormous number of fine particles stuck together in the cake. 2) Even if this can be effected, it is impossible to remove the dried coal from the air. A wet scrubber must be employed, the discharge of which must go back to the filter and dryer as a circulating load of the most objectionable sort, being the extreme fines. Various compromises have been used to cope with the problem of drying this relatively small tonnage of high moisture coal. Often some of the dried coal is mixed back with the feed to the dryer in an attempt to make the mixture more handleable and more available to contact with the hot air than the filter cake alone would be. This may help to some extent with the first problem but it does nothing about the second and a dryer operated in this way has to be oversized. Sometimes the filter cake is mixed with a coarser fraction for the same reason. Here again, while this may make a mixture (the particles of which are more readily brought into contact with the hot air), the problem of getting the fine coal out of the air remains and a larger percentage of the total coal to be dried is handled by the most expensive means. Mechanical dewatering has accounted for more and more of total coal drying lately and in many cases would satisfactorily handle the whole load, down to 28 mesh, if there were a means available for doing a good job on the —28 mesh by itself. The dryer which is the subject of this paper was designed expressly for doing this job — drying fine material by itself regardless of how wet it may be to start with, how fine it may be, or how gummy and sticky these properties in combination may make it. In recent years the procedures for functionally designing bulk storage bins and hoppers have evolved from qualitative guess and try methods to a quantative method based on theory and tests of the bulk solid to be stored. This quantative method, developed and implemented by Dr.'s A. W. Jenike and J. R. Johanson as with any new design, must prove its effectiveness and validity in the actual operation of the finished equipment. How accurate are the theoretical predictions? Is it possible to extrapolate from bench size tests on a small ample of the bulk solid to the full scale bin design? Can the theoretical designs be economically translated into working hardware? In this paper the answers to these questions are discussed in light of actual bin operations.

"The Institute of Applied Geology, Manila, Philippines, is jointly sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippines Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund). It provides, in its fourth year of operation, an interesting example of international cooperation in mineral development. Objectives include: (1) the training of mining engineers in modern techniques of mineral exploration; (2) assisting government and industry in discovering new ore deposits; and (3) providing the basis for the establishment of an economically oriented graduate school of geology at the University, the first of its kind in the country. Training of engineers requires roughly one full year, which is divided between academic study and actual field practice. Lecture and laboratory instruction include courses at university level designed specifically to up-grade those aspects of the geological sciences that are required by mining engineers now qualifying as mineral exploration engineers-economic geology, applied geochemistry, geo-physical exploration, petrology and structural geology. The field training involves direct participation in actual mineral exploration projects arranged with the co-operation of the Bureau of Mines and private interests engaged in mineral development and production. The system works well in practice, and the Institute staff and trainees were responsible for outlining new evidence of economic mineralization. It is also apparent from the application of the exploration methods available to the project -geological mapping, air photo interpretation, magnetic, electric, electromagnetic, self potential and gravity surveying as well as geochemical prospecting -that, under the humid, tropical, mountainous conditions in which the practical program was conducted, air-supported geochemical prospecting with attendant reconnaissance geological mapping affords the most economical and effective approach to mineral exploration for at least some of the deposits characteristic of the region."

An investigation has been made to determine the applicability of the Cendrex3 X-ray instrument for the measurement of the ash content of washed bituminous coal products. The results obtained for selected products from six preparation plants in the Appalachian region and one preparation plant in the mid-western region are described. Emphasis of the study was placed on low-ash bituminous coal products suitable for utility or metallurgical markets. There was good agreement between the results obtained by conventional ash determination methods and by ash determination using the Cendrex for all products tested.

One of the most persistent topics at technical gatherings and in the recent scientific press has been the reduction of iron ore. To cite some of them, in May 1960, a symposium on the subject was sponsored by the Electrochemical Society. The proceedings, comprising two dozen papers, were later published.3/ More recently, November 1966, a similar gathering took place at Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Mich. The latest meeting was the International Congress on Production and Utilization of Reduced Materials, Evian, France, May 1967. If the volume of literature, symposia and conferences is a measure of industry concern, then current interest must be at a high level. To the casual observer of the metallurgical scene, the abiding and recurring attention to iron ore reduction outside the blast furnace must be somewhat puzzling in that so much research endeavor has resulted in so little commercial activity.

A study zvas made of rate-sensitive plastic deformation and superplasticity in alloys of lead and tin. These alloys (lead, PO-19 pct Sn, Sn-38 pct Pb, Sn-2 pct Pb, tin) were extruded, aged at room temperature, or melted and resolidified to produce a variety of ~nicrostrnctures. Flow stress us strain rate data were obtained frorn tension tests for strain rates between 10-6 and 1 min-1. The curve log o .us log £ was S-shaped jor fine-grained materials and approxinzately linear for coarse-grained nzaterials. At constant grain size, the behavior was relatively insensitive to conposition. High rate sensitivity (d log o/d log k) and superplasticity occurred at intermediate strain rates in fine-grained materials and are believed to be associated with a transition with strain rate in the mode of plastic flow. This transition was shifted to higher strain rates with increasing temperataire or decrensing grain size. The high rate rneclzanisrn is presunzed to be slip, while rnetallographic evidence sug-gests that the low rate lnechanism is pain boundary sliding. PEARSON' discovered that extruded eutectic alloys of Pb-Sn and Bi-Sn could be elongated as much as 2000 pct in tension. The ability for stretching decreased with aging time or annealing to increase the grain size. At high strain rates, or if the material was in the cast condition, normal ductility was observed. Following deformation of the extruded Pb-Sn eutectic at low rates, Pearson observed an equiaxed granular structure on an initially flat surface, while rapid straining produced elongated grains. He attributed the large deformation in the extruded alloys to the persistence of extremely small grains to a temperature sufficiently high for inter granular flow. Avery and backofen2 measured the strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress, m = d In old In 6, in the Pb-Sn eutectic and established a correlation between m and the tensile elongation. In the extruded eutectic alloy the strain rate sensitivity was 0.1 to 0.2 at rapid rates and the elongation was small, while at low rates m increased to 0.4 to 0.6 and superplastic elongation was observed. They also noted a grain size effect. In the case of the cast Pb-Sn eutectic the strain rate sensitivity remained at 0.1 over the range of strain rates of their experiment (3 x 10"3 to 2 min-I). These authors suggested that diffusional (Nabarro-Herring) creep was the mechanism by which deformation occurred at low strain rates, while climb-controlled creep occurred at high rates. Two predictions of this model are that, at low strain rates, the strain rate sensitivity approaches 1, i.e., Newtonian viscosity, and that the strain rate at constant stress varies as D/L2, where D is the coefficient of self-diffusion and L the grain size. More recently, a mechanical and microstructural investigation of the dilute superplastic alloy, Sn-5 pct Bi, has been done.3 The results show that the high strain rate sensitivity is associated with a transition with strain rate of the mechanism of plastic flow. At low strain rates, grain boundary sliding and its associated accommodation processes were evident, while at high strain rates quasi-uniform slip was concluded to be the dominant deformation process. The following experiments were performed to extend our knowledge of the phenomena of superplasticity to a larger range of strain rates, compositions, temperatures, and microstructures in the Pb-Sn alloy system. The question of why a cast structure does not exhibit viscous behavior although it appears to have a fine microstructure2 was investigated.

"In a continuing investigation into the development of uranium alloys for armament applications, some complex base alloy corn positions were modified by varying the amount of alloying elements and by removing one or two of the alloying elements in turn from the base alloys. These uranium-base alloys were specially formulated in a search for heat-treatable, high-strength, ductile, high-density alloys. All alloys studied were ternary, quaternary or more complex alloys of uranium with molybdenum, zirconium, niobium and vanadium. Each cast alloy was studied under three different heat-treatments, and its mechanical and corrosion properties were determined. It was found that although most of the alloys studied had the hardness and strength required, they were extremely brittle and notch-sensitive under tensile stresses."

T. S. Mika (Department of Mineral Technology, University of California, Berkeley, Calif.) - Dr. Cooper's attempt to establish a correlation between process behavior and operational variables on the basis of a statistical analysis after imposing a reasonable process model is a very commendable improvement on the use of standard regression techniques. However, it must be recognized that the imposition of a model has the potential of yielding a poorer representation if its basic assumptions or mathematical formulation are invalid. It appears that at least two aspects of his treatment require some comment. First, the limitations on the kinetic law where xta represents a hypothetical terminal floatable solids concentration (cf. Bushell1), should be mentioned. Most current investigations2-9 appear to utilize the concept of a distribution of rate constants rather than a single unique value, k, to describe flotation kinetics. A distributed rate constant is certainly a more physically meaningful concept than that of a terminal concentration. The study of Jowett and safvi10 strongly indicates that xta is merely an empirical parameter, whose actual behavior does not correspond to that expected from a true terminal concentration. Rather than being a strictly mineralogical variable, as Dr. Cooper's treatment implies, it apparently represents the hydromechanical nature of the test cell as well as the flotation chemistry. The extension of batch cell kinetic results to full-scale continuous cell operation is a suspect procedure if the effect of such nonmineralogical influences on x,, remain unevaluated. There is evidence that introduction of a terminal concentration is necessitated by the inherent errors which arise in batch testing and are eliminated by continuous testing methods.' Possible lack of validity of the author's use of Eq. 1 is indicated by two unexpected results of the statistical analysis of his batch data. The first is the apparent corroboration of the assumption that the rate constant, k, is independent of particle size, i.e., of changes in the size distribution of floatable material. This assumption directly contradicts numerous results 2,4,11-l8 for cases where first order kinetics prevailed and ignores the phenomenological basis for the analysis of flotation in terms of a distribution of k's. It must be recognized that, if the rate constant is size dependent, the lumped over-all k would be time dependent; Eq. 1 would then no longer be valid. Cooper's x,, is determined by batch flotation of a distribution of sizes for an arbitrary period of time. If the size dependence of k is artificially suppressed, x,, will become a function of the experimental flotation time used in its determination. Upon reviewing the rather extensive literature concerning batch flotation kinetics, there appear to be few instances where constant k and x,, adequately adsorb variations in floatability due to particle size. The second surprising result is the low values of the distribution modulus, n, determined. Contrary to Cooper's assertion, most batch grinding (ball or rod mill) products yield values of n > 0.6, which increase as the material becomes harder.'' It is likely that the values of n = 0.25 and n = 0.42 for Trials 1 and 2, respectively, are completely unreasonable, and even the value n = 0.54 obtained for Trial 3 is unexpectedly low. Possibly, this indicates inherent flaws in the three trial models considered, in particular the assumed particle size independence of the rate constant, k. The above does not necessitate that Eq. 1 (and the terminal concentration concept) is invalid; it could constitute a good first approximation. However, the qualitative arguments used by Dr. Cooper in its justification are somewhat frail and require verification, particularly since much of the flotation kinetics literature is in opposition. Apparently, no effort was made to test these hypotheses on the actual data; in fact, since they pertain to a single batch test time, his data cannot be utilized to evaluate the kinetics of flotation. To evolve a control algorithm on the basis of this infirm foundation seems a questionable procedure. Another difficulty in his analysis arises in consideration of the froth concentrating process. As Bushel1 ' notes, for Eq. 1 to be valid it is necessary that the rate of recycle from the froth be directly proportional (independent of particle size) to the rate of flotation transport from the pulp to the froth, a restrictive condition." Harris suggests that it is more realistic to assume that depletion occurs in proportion to the amount of floatable material in the pertinent froth phase volume (treating that volume as perfectly mixed).12,21,22 The physical implications of

NORAD, when completed, will be housed in large chambers excavated out of the granite beneath the Cheyenne Mountain near Colorado Springs. A room and pillar layout for the chamber excavation was selected and executed. Many complex problems arose in designing a rock bolt system; this paper includes discussions on: rock strengthening following excavation, excavation and ground support problems, orienting rock bolts with respect to jointing systems, conducting pull tests, four-way chamber intersection problems, the need for grouting rock bolts, and loss of tension and permanency of anchorage in a rock bolt system. In the event of a sudden nuclear attack upon the United States, it is imperative that vital command and control centers have a high probability of survival. One such vital facility is the North American Air Defense Command Combat Operations Center at Colorado Springs, Colo. Known briefly as NORAD, this installation when completed will be housed in large chambers excavated out of granite beneath the eastern slope of Cheyenne Mountain (Fig. 1). The NORAD COC, a U.S. Air Force sponsored project, will serve as the primary collection and evaluation center for data concerning unknown aircraft, missiles, or space vehicles, which might bring destruction to North America. The data will be fed into high-speed computers and electronic equipment from outpost sources: radar, ballistic missile early warning stations and picket ships throughout the world. Electronically controlled display boards will make it possible to evaluate the tracking data instantaneously and to take appropriate defensive action.'

Bench scale, laboratory batch attrition grinding tests were made of a coarse commercial kaolin in a stainless steel, 5-inch-diameter attrition grinding machine to study the effect of a number of basic operating variables on particle size reduction and electric energy consumption. The results of the investigation showed that the more important operating variables influencing the efficiency of kaolin comminution and energy consumption requirements were type, size, and shape of grinding media, grinding media to clay weight ratio, peripheral rotor speed, clay slip pulp density, degree of pulp dispersion, and the angular arrangement of the rotor and stator bars. The tests also indicated that variables having less influence on grinding efficiency and energy consumption were pulp temperature, design of rotor cage, rotor clearance, rotor-stator bar interval, addition agents, pulp level, degree of pulp aeration, and chamber liners. The research showed that grinding media had the greatest influence on abrasion of machine parts and that spherical-shaped grinding media were superior to sharp angular or long bladed media with respect to media degradation, machine abrasion as well as grinding efficiency.

The irradiation-induced densification of pyrolytic carbon has been shown to take place by a simple first-order rate process. The values of the densification constant, kd, for isotropic carbons are 1.0 x 10-22, 1.4 X 10-22 and 2.8 X 10-22 (nut)-1 at irradiation temperatures of 520o, 670°, and 1000oC, respectively. The apparent activation energy obtained from the temperature dependence of kd for isotropic carbons is about 0.2 ev. Estimates of the maximum stresses that develop in isotropic carbons owing to shrinkage onto an unyielding support show that stresses in excess of 15,000 psi may be avoided during irradiatian at 600" and 1000°C if the initial coating density is kept above 1.5 and 1.9 g per cu cw, respectively. If a carbon coating on an unyielding support is not completely isotropic, stresses may continue to build up at high neutron exposures after densification is complete because of continued anisotropic distortion. Stresses in excess of 15,000 psi from this source may be avoided during irradiation at 1000°C if' the Bacon anisotropy factor is kept below 1.3. A variety of applications of carbon and graphite in nuclear technology has stimulated numerous studies of the effect of neutron irradiation on these materials One of the most interesting problems associated with the use of carbons and graphites in the high fast neutron fluxes of nuclear reactors arises as a consequence of the neutron-induced dimensional changes that occur during irradiation. Energetic neutrons displace car- bon atoms from their lattice positions; and, depending on the temperature, the interstitials and vacancies produced migrate to form clusters, recombine, or are annihilated at dislocations or crystallite boundaries. The competition of various sinks for the point defects results in structure-sensitive bulk-dimensional changes that vary with temperature in a complicated way. This paper deals with the neutron-induced dimensional changes in turbostratic carbons that are being used as coatings on nuclear fuel particles. Details of the structure of these carbons and the variations of their structure with deposition conditions have been reported.'-3 It has been shown in previous work that the neutron-

The Minerals Processing Section of Surface Combustion is currently engineering and erecting a plant designed to produce 400,000 LTPY of 95% metalized pellets from raw magnetite concentrate, This venture is the first domestic commercial facility that will manufacture pre-reduced pellets as an integral part of a process to produce steel. Surface Combustion has developed the methods that will be used. Midrex, a division of Surface Combustion's parent company, Midland-Ross, will own and operate this plant. The site is adjacent to the City of Portland, Oregon on a 15 acre hydraulically-filled area on the east bank of the Willamette River. Either filter cake or concentrates in slurry form will be purchased from Marcona in Peru, delivered to the dock facility by ocean vessels and distributed to a pond for wet storage. Reclamation from the pond will be with a conventional dredge delivering concentrate to a thickener.

TABOR1 has indicated for a number of polycrystal-line materials that their hardness should be directly related to their yield strength. For a material showing zero work-hardening, the Meyer hardness, MH, may be calculated in terms of the yield stress, sy, by utilizing slip line theory and the result is: The Meyer hardness corresponds to indenting the surface with a spherical indenter and specifying the ratio of load and projected area of the indentation. The correlation indicated by Eq. [I] is not well-established. It has been verified to some degree by performing hardness tests on materials strained to the maximum nominal stress and taking this stress as the (new) yield stress of a nonwork-hardening material. The dependence of hardness on yield strength for an annealed material capable of showing work-hardening has not been theoretically evaluated but, presumably, the hardness should be greater than that specified above. Marcinkowski, Fisher, and szirmae2 measured the dependence of the Vickers Diamond Pyramid hardness, H,, on yield strength for an annealed Fe-Cr alloy which shows work-hardening and found:

In recent years examination of thin foils of metals and alloys has been widely used in studies of deformation and phase-transformation mechanisms. Applications of this technique to studies of titanium and titanium alloys have been infrequent. Therefore, as a large number of titanium alloys have been investigated in this laboratory, it is proposed to give an account of methods used. Particular emphasis will be placed on some of the artifacts introduced in thin foils of titanium and titanium alloys during preparation. Experimental Procedure. It has been found that a large number of titanium alloys can be electropolished in a solution consisting of 30 cu cm perchloric acid (60 pct), 175 cu cm n-butyl alcohol, and 300 cu cm methyl alcohol. Thin foils are prepared using the window method and the electropolishing conditions listed in Table I. Although this solution is not unique, it is attractive because of its low concentration of perchloric acid and the wide range of alloys for which it can be used. Electropolishing is conducted at below -25°C as above this temperature a brown anodic film is produced on the specimen surface. Temperatures above -25°C also accentuate preferential attack of the 0 phase in the two-phase alloys, which unfortunately occurs at all temperatures. Contamination. It is advantageous to reduce the specimen to a thickness of 25 to 50 p prior to electropolishing, since the low-temperature electropolishing technique results in a low rate of metal removal. The migration of hydrogen and of deuterium dissolved in a iron and in nickel induced by an applied electrical potential has been measured over a range of temperature. In all cases the intevstitial solute migrates to the cathode. The deduced charges of transport are positive, independent of or slightly dependent on temperature, and markedly larger for the beavier mass. These results are interpreted as showing predominating momenlum transfer between electron holes and the acticated complex of the elementary diffusion act. THE migration of components of a metallic system under the action of an applied electrical potential is called electromigration or electratransport. This phenomenon has been known since 1861 and is becoming of increasing interest to metal scientists because of the opportunity it offers to explore the connections between mass transport and electron transport. Until recently, reliable data have been very scarce because of the difficulties inherent in the measurements. In addition, theoretical understanding has been either nonexistent or rudimentary and at present this situation is only moderately improved. Whereas the prevalent notion had been (and is still widely held) that electromigration directly reflects the state of ionization of a component in its equilibrium state in the metal, it is now becoming clear that the major, if not the sole, factor is the momentum transfer between the charge carriers, themselves in motion because of the applied field, and the metallic components in their activated state. It becomes important therefore to obtain reliable data over a range of temperature on electrornigration in systems where only one component moves, that is, either in pure metals (vacancy motion) or in interstitial solid solutions. Our choice of systems was dictated by our measurements' of the Soret effect in solid solutions of hydrogen and deuterium in iron and nickel. Indeed, the main reason for making measurements on electromigration at all is that we suspected a mechanistic connection between thermal diffusion and electromigration. In our former paper' we proposed that what is common to both phenomena is the momentum transfer between the charge carriers in the metal and the atom as it jumps from one equilibrium position to another. In Soret diffusion, however, there is in addition the dissipation of the energy of the jumping atom via pho-nons. We have since found that similar ideas for this interconnection have been developed by Fiks.2 In the present paper we will discuss in more detail our understanding of the mechanism of electromigration itself, but we turn first to a presentation of the experiments and results. EXPERIMENTS AND RESULTS Let us consider a metallic system in which only one component, m , can diffuse at the temperature in question, and to which are applied simultaneously an electrical potential gradient, grad cp, and a chemical potential gradient, grad p,. One may write3 for the material flux Jm and the electronic charge flux Je by applying the condition, grad = 0, to Eq. [I] and evaluating grad(um/T) for the isothermal case and for activity coefficient independent of composition over the relevant composition range. ere, c is the concentration and D the diffusivity of the mobile component. The experimental technique that we have used to measure Z* for the isotopes of hydrogen individually dissolved in each of two transition metals has been developed from a method used by Wagner and Heller.4 (A somewhat similar method was also used by Herold.5) A wire or thin rod of the metal under study connects two volumes of gaseous hydrogen at identical pressures; hence grad um = 0. A direct current is made to pass through the specimen, serving to maintain the specimen at the desired temperature and also to produce the electromigration of the hydrogen dissolved in the metal in equilibrium with the gaseous hydrogen. The results of a survey of 46 West Virginia coal samples, employing the Office of Coal Research-Band coal sewage treatment process, indicated that the Freeport coal and Bakerstown coal from Preston County, Pittsburgh coal from Harrison and Ohio County and the Sewickley coal from Monongalia County offer outstanding potential for water clarification. Oxidation, steam treatment and acid and base washing of coal generally resulted in small positive or negative changes to the water clarification capacities of the coal while the employment of prepared coal fractions resulted in more significant benefits. Of the coals tested, those fractions with high ash, high sulfur and low Btu generally possessed the highest adsorption capacities.

The Precambrian Eastern Creek Volcanics comprises spilitic basalts with interbedded sediments and tuffs which were extruded and deposited during Middle Proterozoic time. The rocks have undergone low-grade regional metamorphism.The Eastern Creek Volcanics are approximately 17,000 ft thick and have been divided into four units.The rocks were laid down in a geosynclinal basin elongate to the north. The main structural features are the northerly trending Mount Isa and Gorge Creek-Quilalar fault systems.Major east-west faults cause repetition of the sequence.Copper and uranium mineralization is known within the formation. Copper mineralization is confined to quartz-filled shears anp basalts. Nothing of economic importance has been found in the area though ore deposits have been found elsewhere in this type of environment.

Ore broken at the mine or quarry face generally is loaded by power shovels into large trucks or rail cars and hauled to a primary crushing plant where it is reduced to a more workable size for ease in handling. The primary crushing plant is customarily located as close as possible to the center of gravity of the ore body and the projected limits of the mine pit to minimize the cost of hauling and to increase safety from flying rock as a result of blasting operations. A belt conveyor is used to transport the crushed product to a nearby ore treatment plant or, should this plant be located some distance away, the ore is loaded directly into cars and hauled by rail. Between trips the crusher product is accumulated in bins or stock piles. In all open pit mining and quarrying operations, the power shovel, the transportation equipment, and the primary crushing plant should work as a team, complementing each other. When establishing the design and selecting the equipment for these closely integrated operations, capital and operating costs for each unit operation must be weighed to achieve an optimum balance. Rising labor costs have given impetus to the universal trend toward greater efficiency, higher speed and larger equipment, and higher degrees of automatic control. The result is that power shovels have increased in size, haulage trucks are larger and faster, and only coarse crushers with feed openings adequate to receive run-of-mine lumps of ore with a minimum of secondary blasting are selected for new installations. These coarse crushers also have large through-put capacities, even when adjusted to produce a 6- to 10-in. size of product, thus making it possible to use a single stage of coarse crushing at the average mine. The use of a single crusher results in a compact crushing plant layout consisting of a dumping pocket for receiving loads of run-of-mine ore, a coarse crusher followed by a surge chamber for the crushed product, and a feeder to withdraw the ore at a uniform rate to deposit it on a belt conveyor.
