Nickel, Type 316 stainless steel, and copper show decreases in reversed bending fatigue strength with increases in air and oxygen pressure. The leveling off of the log N us log p curve for nickel at 300" and 816°C is discussed in terms of a model in which surface saturation gives rise to a critical pressure. A metallographic study indicated that the effect of environment on crack initiation and growth rates is a function of temperature. It is shown that small amounts of impurities in inert gases may substantially reduce the fatigue strength of nickel. 1n a previous investigation1 of high-temperature bending fatigue in air and in vacuum, reversals in the effect of environment with changes in test conditions were atrributed to a mechanism consisting of two processes acting in competition. One of them, oxidation strengthening, has been demonstrated in a straightforward manner by measuring the rupture strength of a sintered nickel-oxide bond.' The detailed operation of the other process, facilitation of crack propagation by surface absorption of oxygen, is uncertain. Thompson et UZ advanced the possibility that the formation of an oxide layer prevented rewelding of cracks during the compressive part of the cycle, while Wads worth and Hutchings4 further proposed that the reaction of oxygen with atoms at the tip of the crack helped the metal to break there, a possibility which has also been advanced to explain crack formation in creep.5 A difficulty in arriving at a mechanism for this lowering of fatigue strength in air is the inconsistency of some of the data. For example, Wadsworth and Hutchings4 found an approximately linear decrease of log cycles-to-fracture (N) with an increase of log pressure-of-air (p) for copper and aluminum at room temperature, while snowden,' although finding a similar linear dependence for aluminum, observed a stepped curve for lead. Between l0-' and 10"1 torr there is a sharp decrease in the fatigue life of lead with increasing air pressure, but plateaus, signifying no dependence on pressure, are found at higher and lower pressures. If, as discussed elsewhere: these environmental effects arise from the adsorption of gas on crack surfaces, it would be expected that as the pressure is increased a saturation point would be observed, beyond which there is no further effect. To gain further information about the form of the log N vs logp curve, it was decided in the present investigation to repeat this type of measurement at elevated temperature on nickel, copper, and Type 316 stainless steel. G. W. Healy (union Carbide Metals Co.)-The author's paper is a useful contribution to the store of maps of chemical activities of oxides in multi-component slag systems. It is also a good example of the utility of the Gibbs-Schuhmann technique for calculating activities in a system where that of one of the components has been measured. This paper Koh and Caugherty. This plot is reproduced by alor in X-ray Metallography. Because of this nonlinearity, preparation cf suitable standards and/or correction for absorption and enhancement are essential in microanalysis. However, our objection is not the conclusion that Dr. Aaronson has arrived at nor the technique he has used; but only to the foot-note credited to V. Macres. The level of chromium that he was concerned with (less than 3 pet) is so low that the deviation of uncorrected Cr-curve will be negligible. Besides Dr. Aaronson has used chromium intensity from martensite and set it equal the bulk chromium content of the alloy. Using this chromium-intensity as a reference, he has calculated the amount of chromium in the ferrite. This amounts to the same as using an internal standard. Since the chromium content in austenite and ferrite are almost the same, enhancement due to iron in both will be the same and therefore does not need to be corrected. together with the author's recently published one1 on the CaO-FeO-Fezo3 system will be most helpful to others learning to apply Schuhmann's method, which merits a far wider application than it has received to date and should greatly aid our understanding of equilibria between metal and oxide phases. As shown by okcen" its use may even be extended to sections of systems with any number of oxides. I have some questions as to the selection of equilibrium constants made by Dr. Turkdogan. He has chosen one for the formation of Fe2O3 from FeO and oxygen which gives Fea3 activities 50 pct higher

Activities of oxides in the ternary FeO-MnO-SiO system are calculated from data on the binaries, using the Gibbs -Schuhmann method. These activity data are used, together with thermodynamic relations, to calculate the contents of oxygen, silicon, and manganese in liquid iron, and the composition of the corresponding oxide phases in equilibrium with it. Excellent agreement was found between calculated and experimental metal compositions, indicating that thermodynamic methods, such as those presented, can supply useful data on slag-metal equilibria, and are therefore capable of wider application. When molten steel containing oxygen is treated with a deoxidizer, the product of the reaction is composed of the oxides of the deoxidizing elements together with more or less iron oxide. This assemblage of oxides is presumably very close to equilibrium with the melt since it is formed directly from elements dissolved in it. Therefore, it is likely that metal analyses corresponding to a given oxide phase composition are calculable with considerable precision where sufficient information is available on activities in both phases. The present study was made to test this hypothesis in the case of deoxidation by silicon and manganese. Here experimental data on the relationship among oxygen, silicon, and manganese in the metal phase are available, as are activity data for the MnO-SiO2, FeO-SiO2, and FeO-MnO binary systems. A further objective was to demonstrate in a specific example how gaps in the data may be filled by judicious interpolation, and how the Gibbs-Schuhmann method is applied to obtain activities in ternary systems. The rigorous derivation of the latter, requiring considerable facility in handling partial differential equations, tends to mask the real simplicity of the method, and repel the very engineers and experimenters who would benefit the most from its use. I) GENERAL PROCEDURE Deoxidation of steel with silicon and manganese results in the formation of two phases, metal and oxide. The number of components is four—Fe, Mn, Si, and 0. The phase rule then gives the number of degrees of freedom: If temperature and pressure are fixed, 2 deg of freedom remain. Consequently, it suffices to fix the concentration of two of the components of the system for all the concentrations to be determined and, at least in principle, calculable. The practical problem is then to discover a straightforward method of calculation with a minimum of trial and error solutions. The type of reactions to be dealt with are like the following: Si (in steel) + 2 O(in steel) = SiO2(in oxide phase) The standard free energy of this reaction is readily obtained from the literature, so that the equilibrium constant can be calculated by the expression: Since the metallurgist is concerned with percentages rather than activities, a real solution requires information that will permit activities to be converted to concentrations. This information is fairly adequate for the elements dissolved in molten steel, but is not available for the FeO-MnO-SiO2 oxide system. Therefore, the first step in this study was to find the relation between activity and concentration for the three oxides making up the system. The next step was the calculation of slag and metal compositions that are in equilibrium with one another. As shown by the phase rule, it is sufficient to assume the values of two composition variables in order to calculate the rest. But which two are picked makes a vast difference in how difficult the calculation turns out to be, so that it is necessary to make preliminary trial of several routes to find the easiest one. A convenient method is to begin with the slag, and to pick FeO concentration and that of one of the other oxides. Starting with the relation between oxygen dissolved in the liquid steel and FeO in the slag permits a good first estimate to be made of the oxygen content of the steel in equilibrium with FeO, because the iron content being fairly close to 100 pct, Fe has an activity close to unity. Using this first estimate of oxygen activity, approximate values of the manganese and silicon contents of the melt are readily calculated from the appropriate equilibrium constants. No detailed information has been published heretofore on the performance of small industrial-type anthracite stokers in building-heating service, apparently because of the difficulty of comparing the performance of one unit with that of another over an entire season's operation. Studies of competitive heating fuels have been similarly handicapped, and attempts to compare fuels are seldom technically sound in this investigation, the performance of a 60-in. Losch4 stoker burning rice-size anthracite in a standard commercial boiler was observed during a 4-month winter-spring season. It was used to heat two buildings at the Bureau of Mines' Anthracite Research Center at Schuylkill Haven, Pa., with the customary type of automatic pressure-range control. Attendance was limited to inspecting, fuel weighing, data recording, and ash removal. Results were computed daily and grouped by weekly periods to minimize daily irregularities. The same stoker-boiler unit had already been tested in a series of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) test code runs, with the stoker running continuously and with other conditions well stabilized A comparison of results from the code test and the building-heating tests provided information not available in the past for a single stoker unit, assisted in analyzing heat losses not computable in a cyclic operation, and established a basis for evaluating stoker performance in heating service.

The objective of the present study was to detennine the role played by double bonds in the flotation of a very pure mineral using 18-carbon unsaturated fatty acids as collectors. Streaming potential measurements were made on a plug of pure synthetic rutile in solutions of inorganic electrolytes and unsaturated 18-carbon fatty acid soaps. Experimental results from these tests are detailed in the paper. The collector effectiveness of oleic acid with one double bond, linoleic acid with two double bonds, and linolenic acid with three double bonds has been a matter of speculation for many years, and conflic- ting experimental evidence1-8 has not clarified the issue. The overall objective of the present study was to determine the role played by double bonds in the flotation of a very pure mineral using 18-carbon un-saturated fatty acids as collectors. Since zeta potential is dependent on adsorption and orientation of ions at the solid-liquid interface, its variation under different conditions of pH and collector concentration should throw some light on the behavior of unsatu-rated fatty acids in flotation pulps. Titanium dioxide, in the form of rutile, was chosen for the investigation because it is now available in a very pure, synthetic, crystalline state, and despite the fact that it is one of the most important synthetic inorganic chemicals in commercial use, its electro-kinetic properties have not been closely studied. Other Federal agencies have been coming to the Bureau of Mines for help with the purchase and utilization of fuel, largely coal, almost since the day the Bureau was created in 1910. The requests covered a wide range of fuel-economy problems and included boiler-water treatment after it became apparent that water-formed deposits on heating surfaces acted as insulators, decreasing heat transfer and impairing fuel efficiency. Dr. Ralph E. Hall, a Bureau of Mines physical chemist determined the reactions that cause adhering scale to form in boilers (7)2 and went on to introduce scientific principles into water treatment for scale prevention (8). Widespread publicity of these achievements increased the requests for help from Federal steam-generating plants. Since no other Federal agency (even those which were more directly concerned with testing water) wanted to provide boiler-feedwater service, the Bureau decided to continue to give requested help to Federal agencies, Later, the Congress endorsed such agency cooperation as an economy measure,

A metal diaphragm pressure relay system was constructed to measure vapor pressures of the metal halides, oxyhalides, and other substances at temperatures up to 700° or 800° C. The vapor pressure of arsenic (III) oxide (As2O3) was determined to verify the reliability of the apparatus for such measurements. The data for the liquid AS2 Os (2820 to 4830 C) are represented by the equation, log Pmm = 6.875 - 2,929/T, from which the normal boiling point was calculated to be 461° C. The heat of vaporization calculated from this equation was 13.40 ±0.09 kcal/g mole As4OS and is essentially constant over the interval studied. The melting point of the octahedral arsenic (III) oxide was determined to be 278° C from the inter-section of the solid and liquid vapor pressure curves, A thermal analysis apparatus is also described by which melting and transition temperatures could be checked by a method independent of vapor pressure data. The melting points of the monoclinic and octahedral forms were determined to be 314.4 ±1.4° C and 278 ±5° C, respectively.

Ta-lr alloys have been examined over the complete range of compositions using metallographic and X-ray techniques. The terminal solid-solubility limits, solidus temperatures, and intermediate phases were determined. There are four inter-mediate phases: o, tetragonal, analogous to a (Fe-Cr); 0,. orthorhombic; az, tetragonal; and a TaZr,, cubic, AuCu, structure. Of these, o and a, melt peritecticaLly, a, decomposes peritectoidally, and a TaIrs has a congruent melting point. Three peri-tectic and one eutectic reactions occur. 1 HE Ta-Ir phase diagram has not been treated in the literature. Intermetallic phases and terminal solid solubilities have been described and estimated.'-4 The previous findings have been confirmed in this work. A complete diagram with additional phases and solidus curves is presented. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Starting materials were tantalum powder of 99.8 pct purity, supplied by the National Research Corp., Cambridge, Mass., and iridium powder of 99.9 pct purity, supplied by the Bishop Co., Malvern, Pa. Both powders were -200 mesh. Table I lists the analyses as given by the suppliers. A standard procedure was employed in making the alloy buttons, which was described in detail in Refs. 5 and 6, and which included repeated arc-melting of powder compacts and determination of the composition by the weight-balance method. This is especially justifiable due to the similar vapor pressures of tantalum and iridium. In the critical parts of the diagram, a spacing of 1/2 at. pct was used, based on premelted master alloy material. The observed structures and X-ray spectra were consistent with the composition sequence of the alloys. Table II lists the final alloy atomic percentages with the calculated percent error of composition. Cross sections representative in grain size and composition were selected for the study, as described in Ref. 5. Based on prior experience, no contamination from the tungsten electrode was considered. Temperature measurements were obtained using a Leeds and Northrup optical pyrometer and have been described extensively in Refs. 5 and 6. All heat treatments were made in the high-vacuum tantalum tube furnace mentioned in Ref. 5. Samples annealed in tantalum containers cooled from 1800" to 1000"~ in 5 sec; those annealed in ceramic crucibles cooled over the same range in 15 to 30 sec. The thermal treatments are listed in Table 111. All specimens were homogenized at 1735°C for 24 hr. Tantalum-rich compositions were treated in tantalum buckets. Iridium-rich compositions were annealed in tantalum buckets below the eutectic temperature of 1950°C; up to 2200°C, tungsten-lined tantalum baskets were used; and above 2200°C thoria crucibles were used. It was found that refractory oxides (in early stages of the investigation alumina crucibles were used up to 1800°C and thoria crucibles were used to 2400"~) give off minute amounts of oxygen and thereby influence the microstructure considerably, or react directly with the alloys.

R.C. Ferguson (District Manager, Hardinge Company Inc., Hibbing, Minn.) — In the opening paragraph of Mr. Bernstrom's paper he stated that the Cascade mill performance information is preliminary. With the completion of the 1962 operating season, more reliable performance information became available. The main bearings, which had been damaged, were reconditioned at the factory. New Gatke bearing bushings with a 120° are of contact were supplied. Provision was made to introduce high pressure lubricant at two points in each bearing. New spherical bearing balls that operate in spherical seats were aligned at the factory and held in place by several setscrews to aid in installing the bearings in the field. The screws were not loosened prior to, or during, operation; therefore, the bearings operated as rigid bearings. The lubricant cooling system was changed to the cooling tower type to provide lubricating water of a suitable temperature. Another refinement consisted of installing a device to add a set percentage of soluble oil to the make-up water.

Warren and Averbach's multiple order, Fourier method was applied to solid specimens of SAE 1045 steel. The material was hardened to three hardness levels and specimens of each hardness were shot peened to three intensities. Particle size, root-mem-square strain, mean strain, md macro residual stress were determined for each. Microstrains caused by either hardening or peening varied markedly over microregions. In general, increasing the hardness or peening intensity increased the rms strain and decreased the particle size. Similar effects were observed by varying hardness and peening intensity independently. At a Rockwell hardness of C 50, peening had little effect on line broadening, but both mean strain and macro residual stress increased. Mean strain was independent of column length. Induced macro residual stress by peening was affected most by initial hardness, but not by specific peening intensity. The purpose of this work is to establish the state of residual strain and particle size by X-ray diffraction in hardened and cold-worked plain carbon steel and attempt to relate these X-ray measured parameters to fatigue performance. X-ray line broadening (and its micro implications), along with X-ray residual stress (and its macro implications), may be basic indicators of the inherent fatigue resistance of the material. X-ray line broadening is caused by variable lattice strains and small particle size. Both are a result of plastic deformation which accompanies hardening or cold working processes. Therefore, X-ray line broadening is a good measure of both. warren1 has recently reviewed the Warren and Averbach2,3 Fourier analysis of line broadening. Strain and particle size effects can be separated because broadening due to particle size is independent of order of the diffraction peaks, while broadening due to strain is not. Microstrain is obtained as a root-mean-square strain averaged over discrete distances within the crystals causing diffraction. These distances are quite small, varying from 10 to 10081, and may be interpreted as the gage length over which the strains are averaged. Because of their variable nature, the X-ray line is broadened. The plot of rms strain vs distance (or column length) within the specimen gives a measure of their variability. Small particles also cause X-ray line broadening as already mentioned. A particle is interpreted as a region within a crystal or grain which diffracts X-rays coherently. This region is one of given orientation and may be bounded by a small angle grain boundary, dislocations, a twin boundary, or a stacking fault. The present work covers measurement of X-ray line broadening and macro residual stress on an SAE 1045 steel, quenched and tempered to various hardnesses. Various amounts of cold working were produced by shot peening the surfaces to various Almen intensities. Particle size, root-mean-square strain, and mean strain were calculated from the Fourier coefficients of the X-ray diffraction profiles in a direction normal to the peened surface. No effort was made to separate the various causes of particle size broadening. Macro residual stresses were reported in directions parallel to the peened surface. I) X-RAY METHOD The Fourier coefficients were determined for the 110 and 220 X-ray profiles. They were corrected for instrumental broadening by the method of Stokes,4 using an annealed reference specimen of similar geometry presumed to be free from broadening due to small particles and distortions. Field criteria are needed to help the prospector recognize a potentially expansible shale, clay, or slate. Certain criteria have proven useful in California even though the physical-chemical mechanisms of expansion are not thoroughly understood. Three conditions must be satisfied before expansion can take place, The raw material must partially fuse at a low temperature (1800-2000°F.), Concurrently a gas must form. The raw material must be sufficiently impermeable to trap the gas within the particle. Low temperature melting, which is controlled by bulk chemical composition, is difficult to assess in the field but most common shale, clay, and slate is suitable in this respect, The presence of organic carbon, the most common source of an expanding gas, is indicated by dark color of the rock, A large proportion of clay-sized particles promotes impermeability; fine grain-size is indicated by conchoidal fracture, The shape of the expanded particle is commonly indicated by the texture of the raw material. Rocks with well-developed slatey cleavage produce accordion-shaped particles; massive rocks tend to form rounded particles. Undesirable materials commonly present with expansible shale include: weathered shale; sandstone and other coarse-grained sediments; and limestone, Weathering, which is indicated by color, reduces or eliminates expansion; therefore, surface samples seldom are representative of the shale found at depth. Sandstone does not expand and will increase the average weight of the finished product, Limestone or particles of carbonate minerals can be actively harmful because they are converted to free lime (CaO) during the firing process, If free lime is present in concrete, hydration will cause expansion of the lime particles which result in surficial ?popouts.?

The effect of indium on the solid solubility of calcium and of silicon in magnesium was studied using metallographic, X-ray diffraction, and electrical resistivity techniques. The addition of 2 weight-percent or more of indium reduced the solid solubility of calcium in magnesium by forming a compound containing indium and calcium. Indium additions have no perceptible effect on the solid solubility of silicon in magnesium.

Liquid surface tensions of copper and 18 Group IV-A to VIII transition metals (Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Cb, Ta, Mo, W, Re, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt, Fe, Ni. Co) have been measured by the static pendant-drop and dynamic drop-weight methods on the same rod sample. The drops were formed by electron-bombardment heating in high vacuum. Application of necessary corrections enabled determination of surface tensions to k2 pct and agreement between methods to * 1 to 4 pct for all the metals studied. Evidence is presented that the liquid surface was well screened by metal vapor, suggesting negligible adsorption of gaseous impurities and that the surface tensions measured are characteristic of the metals involved. Correlations between liquid surface tension and melting point, molar volume, heat of vaporization, and atomic number are presented and discussed. Temperature coefficients of surface tension were calculated using Eötvös' law. SURFACE tension and interface energies of metals are the result of incomplete atomic coordination resulting in a force perpendicular to the boundary, tending to minimize its area. These energies are important in many phases of metallurgy, including microstructure, sintering, joining, electronic emission, and lubrication, which in turn affect many physical and mechanical properties of metals. Liquid surface tension refers to the interface between the liquid and its own vapor or nonreactive atmosphere, and is considered a physical property of the liquid. Since equilibrium shapes can be readily obtained with liquids, the units of surface tension (force per length) and interface energy (energy per area) are interchangeable. Thermo-dynamically, the surface tension ?LV is given by the change in free energy F with surface area A at constant pressure P, temperature T, and composition N: for commercially important refractory metals, vanadium, columbium, tantalum,13,14 molybdenum,14 and tungsten,l5 and none for the rare platinum-group metals and rhenium. Measuring the surface tensions of transition metals is difficult because of their high reactivity and melting points. Of the many techniques available,16-18 the pendant-drop 19-21 and drop-weight methods17,22 are considered superior because they can be modified to eliminate persistent sources of contamination such as supports and capillaries necessary in the popular sessile drop, capillary rise, and maximum-bubble-pressure techniques. The necessary modification is to melt a drop on the tip of a vertical rod, which provides support through a solid of the same composition.13,15 The object of the work was to study the surface-tension behavior of copper and transition metals, having reasonably low vapor pressures. Liquid surface tension of each pure metal was systematically determined by using a combination of the static pendant-drop and dynamic drop-weight methods on the same rod. Liquid drops were formed by electron-bombardment heating in high vacuum. EXPERIMENTAL WORK As indicated in Table I, the metals studied were high purity and generally were obtained in rod form. The exceptions were titanium and zirconium, which were machined from crystal bars, and molybdenum (tot 11, osmium, and ruthenium, which were sintered and arc cast into rods. All the metals were ground or swaged to desired sizes between 1- and 7-mm diam, and centerless ground round and smooth to a finish better than 50 µ in., rms. Each rod was thoroughly cleaned with steel wool, degreased, acid etched, and dried. In a typical run, the rod was vertically clamped in a modified floating-zone electron-bombardment furnace designed after Calverley23 and Carlson.24 The specimen was outgassed and maintained positive at several kilovolts in a dynamic vacuum of 10-5 to 10-7 mm. The bottom end was enclosed by a tantalum pillbox and heated by electrons emitted from a hot concentric tungsten filament mounted on a movable bracket. The bombardment power was slowly raised until melting was observed. Power requirements ranged from 30 w for copper to 1300 w for 4-mm tungsten. This investigation is concerned with the possibility that the creep resistance of metals might be reduced as a result of recovery at the creep temperature when the applied stress is reduced. For this purpose the effect of stress on the recovery of the creep behavior of pure polycrys talline aluminum was investigated in the cross-slip temperature range where the activation energy for creep is 28.000 cal per mole. Before recovery all specimens were given the same substructure by creeping them under a stress of 7800psi to a strain of 0.218. Recovery was then accomplished by holding the specimens at the creep temperatures of 327" and 337°K under a series of reduced stresses for various periods of time. When the original stress was reapplied the specimens crept more rapidly than when the original stress was first removed, illustrating that recovery did take place. The extent of recovery could be indexed in terms of the UNDER certain conditions of test, the creep rate decreases over the primary stage of creep often by as much as a factor of 10~B. Since the external variables of stress and temperature are held constant, such pronounced and significant changes in the creep rate must be attributed to various substructural modifications that are introduced as a result of creep itself. At the secondary stage of creep, over which the creep rate remains constant and the substructure no longer changes, a balance must be achieved between the rate of increase in creep resistance due to creep straining and the rate of recovery of the substructural modifications. The general validity of these concepts on substructural changes has already been shown,' including the corollary that a more creep-resistant substructure is introduced under a more rapid creep rate arising from a higher applied stress.' In spite of these well-documented facts, very little progress has been additional strain undertaken by the recovered specimen to achieve the same strain rate as the unrecovered specimen. It is significant that the higher recovery stresses gave the most rapid rates of recovery. Over the high range of reduced stresses, where some creq took place during recovery, the activation energy for recovery equaled that for creep, namely 28,000 cal per mole. But for stresses during recovery below 0.80 of the original creep stress, no creep was detected during recovery and an activation energy for recovery of about 72,000 cal per mole was obtained. Whereas the activation energy of 28,000 cal per mole suggests that cross-slip of dislocations is responsible for this recovery, the mechanism for the 72,000 cal per mole process is not known. This activation energy, however, is about twice that for self-difhsion. made in determining, in satisfactory detail, precisely what substructural changes so effectively modify the creep rate.' Up to the present, electron microscopy has failed to uncover, in a satisfactory quantitative manner, the mechanistic processes involved. Since, however, creep, at least at moderate and high temperatures, arises from one or more types of dynamic recovery processes, it should be possible to shed additional light on the total problem by investigating the recovery of creep resistance. The importance of such an investigation becomes apparent when the fact is recognized that there has yet been no direct experimental proof that the rate of softening due to substructural changes as a result of recovery equals the rate of hardening due to creep-induced substructural strengthening over the secondary stages of creep. Furthermore the problem of what happens to the creep-strain induced strengthening when the material recovers either at zero or some reduced operating stress has significant engineering consequences. It was for these reasons that the present investigation on the recovery of creep behavior was initiated. G. W. Healy (union Carbide Metals 0.)-The author's paper is a useful contribution to the store of maps of chemical activities of oxides in multi-component slag systems. It is also a good example of the utility of the Gibbs-Schuhmann technique for calculating activities in a system where that of one of the components has been measured. This paper Koh and Caugherty. Because of this nonlinearity, preparation cf suitable standards and/or correction for absorption and enhancement are essential in microanalysis. However, our objection is not the conclusion that Dr. Aaronson has arrived at nor the technique he has used; but only to the foot-note credited to V. Macres. The level of chromium that he was concerned with (less than 3 pet) is so low that the deviation of uncorrected Cr-curve will be negligible. Besides Dr. Aaronson has used chromium intensity from martensite and set it equal the bulk chromium content of the alloy. Using this chromium-intensity as a reference, he has calculated the amount of chromium in the ferrite. This amounts to the same as using an internal standard. Since the chromium content in austenite and ferrite are almost the same, enhancement due to iron in both will be the same and therefore does not need to be corrected. together with the author's recently published one1 on the CaO-FeO-Fe2O3 system will be most helpful to others learning to apply Schuhmann's method, which merits a far wider application than it has received to date and should greatly aid our understanding of equilibria between metal and oxide phases. As shown by okcen" its use may even be extended to sections of systems with any number of oxides. I have some questions as to the selection of equilibrium constants made by Dr. Turkdogan. He has chosen one for the formation of Fez03 from FeO and oxygen which gives Fea3 activities 50 pct higher

The heat content above 298.15° K was determined for crystalline vanadium silicide of the composition V3Si. This substance has a minor thermal anomaly (probably a heat-capacity maximum) near 560° K; the extra heat absorption is about 50 cal/mole. The original heat-content data are presented, and smooth values of the heat content and the corresponding entropy increments are listed for the temperature range from 298.15° to 1,500° K. Equations representing the heat- content values and derived heat capacities are also included.

Air compressor explosions that are caused by the ignition of combustible vapor mixtures cannot be explained by a single reaction mechanism or sequence of events. Explosions have been caused by the sudden release of large quantities of lubricating oil, by the rapid vaporization of oil that had accumulated slowly in high-pressure piping, and by the production of decomposition products from carbonaceous deposits. Ignitions can be caused by the heat produced in a catalytic reaction, in a compression process, or when a shock wave is propagated through a combustible vapor-air mixture. The frequency of these ignitions can be minimized by establishing proper maintenance and cleaning schedules. Further study is needed to satisfactorily correlate the various factors involved in compressor explosions.

The development of the Granduc mine presents a number of problems which are peculiar to its location and surrounding terrain. Because the development tunnels portal onto an area which is covered by an extensive glacier, and the mountain-side is subjected to dangerous snow slides, it was decided to construct an underground powerhouse to supply the necessary electric power and compressed air. This paper deals with the special problems inherent in the design and -construction of an underground plant. It involves the installation of diesel-electric generating equipment having an aggregate capacity of 1,050 kw.,and of air compressors with a total capacity of 2,400 cfm. Items dis-cussed include the selection of equipment to meet site conditions, the ventilation and cooling of the underground room, and the protection of personnel and equipment from explosions and fire. A short discussion on the automatic supervisory and alarm installation is also included. THE Granduc mine is located 135 miles north of Prince Rupert and 25 miles north of Stew-art.
