One of the least known geologic regions in the U.S. is the area now called the Basin and Range Province. It is paradoxical that so little geologic information has been compiled for a province that has yielded billions of dollars worth of metals and is currently producing a small amount of oil. Regional stratigraphic studies of parts of this large territory have been published only recently, and regional structural interpretations of even parts of the province are rare in the literature. This, of course, does great injustice to the earliest workers: Gilbert,1,2 Russell,9 Le Conte,4 Spurr,5 Louderback,8 and others, who recognized the area as distinctively different from the rest of North America. Their simplified picture of the structure of the ranges and the province as a whole is the groundwork for present understanding and has never been superseded. Since their early works, however, geologic data from the province has consisted largely of detailed reports of widely scattered mining districts. Each district has been described as though it were an island in an unknown sea. More recent syntheses of the geologic history have been prepared by Lindgren,7 Ransome,8 Nolan,9 Bill-ingsley and Locke,30 Longwell,11 and Eardley.12 The tentative nature of the present interpretation, which treats the structural evolution of the Utah and Nevada area, must be considered in light of the scarcity of geologic information from the province as a whole. The methods of interpreting tectonic history from stratigraphy are based largely on the concepts of Marshal Kay.23 Discussions with Hoover Mackin also have aided in organizing the Tertiary history. TECTONIC AND STRATIGRAPHIC SETTING Two approaches to the subject of the tectonic history are possible; they correspond to looking through opposite ends of a pair of binoculars. One involves an expansion and extension of detailed work and the other an interpretation based on regional geological relationships. It is believed that the second approach, used here, is not in disagreement with detailed observations. The area of the Basin and Range Province is shown in Fig. 1. Within this area middle Tertiary to Recent high-angle faulting has controlled development of mountain ranges and valleys. Only the part of the area north of Las Vegas, Nev., and south of the Snake River in Idaho will be considered in this article. Within this part of the province most of the ranges trend north-south. Approximately two thirds of the area is covered by late Tertiary to Recent valley fill and lake deposits.

An earlier Bureau of Mines report4 provided low-temperature heat-capacity and entropy data for three sodium vanadates. This report continues the study of vanadates by presenting analogous data for three crystalline calcium vanadates - calcium metavanadate (CaV206), calcium pyrovanadate (Ca2V2O7), and calcium orthovanadate (Ca3V208). No similar data for these compounds have been published previously. MATERIALS All three vanadate samples were prepared by the Bureau of Mines by heating stoichiometric mixtures of reagent-grade calcium carbonate and vanadium pentoxide.5 Calcium metavanadate was prepared at 610° to 660° C. A stoichiometric mixture was heated for 17 days with intervening grindings, mixings, and adjustments of composition, as shown necessary by chemical analysis. The final analysis gave calcium oxide, 23.48 pct. (theoretical, 23.57 pct.) and vanadium pentoxide, 76.32 pct. (theoretical, 76.43 pct.). The sample also contained 0.11 pct. acid-insoluble matter. The X-ray diffracton pattern showed no lines of free calcium or vanadium oxides. No X-ray diffraction patterns were found in the literature for any of these substances.

A new correlation of blast penetration in model and operating blast furnaces is presented which overcomes objections to prevzous correlations. It is shown that the tuyere diameter is only of small importance in determining the magnitude of the penetration. The data from operating furnaces correlate satisfactorily with the data from models whose cross section is a segment of a circle. A bubble-shaped gas space called a "raceway" normally exists in front of the nose of a blastfurnace tuyere. The periphery or "wall" of the raceway is well defined and is composed of densely packed charge particles. The blast. issuing as a jet from the tuyere, entrains gas from the raceway, in the usual manner of a jet, as it flows to the opposing wall. There it divides and flows back around the walls to be entrained once more. The blast must, of course, eventually leave the raceway and pass up through the charge column, but before it does it may, on the average, make several circuits of the kind described and in doing so it carries with it charge particles, which, because of their fast and circulating motion, suggested the name of "raceway". A fuller description of the raceway may be found elsewhere."' Here it is only necessary to mention, in addition, the measurement which characterizes its size. If an iron bar is pushed through the opened peepsight of a tuyere, .as far as it will go with ease, it will be stopped by the relatively impenetrable opposing raceway wall arid the distance that the bar has been pushed from the tuyere nose is called the "penetration". This measurement may be of practical importance and has; been the subject, with considerable success, of several attempts at correlation with other variables2-5 as stated in the next section. There is still, however, a serious objection to the most recent correlation,3 which is overcome by the correlation proposed in this paper. It will be shown that the objection is not trivial, in that the new correlation will attribute considerably different importance to the variables affecting the magnitude of the penetration. The data to be treated were made available by Wagstaff and are the same as those used in his correlation. They include measurements taken on small models, in which a cold air blast was used and no combustion occurred, and they also include data from operating blast furnaces at Wheeling and Fairless. The information from the blast furnaces will be shown to be in substantial agreement with those models whose plan views are segments of a circle and which are thus like segments of a blast furnace. First, Wagstaff's most recent correlation3 will be discussed and the objection will be given. Then the new correlation will be developed and its implications considered. CORRELATION OF J. B. This paper describes the design and performance of an apparatus for making continuous nondestructive resistance measurements throughout a spool of fine wire. Highly reproducible results on clean and graphite coated tungsten and rnolybdenum wires from 1 to 9.5 mil are presented. A linear relation between resistance and wire weight (per standard length) was obtained on clean wires, but only on those coated wires with very uniform coatings. Results indicating a correlation between tensile strength, hardness, and resistivity are reported. THE increasing demand for greater uniformity in fine tungsten and molybdenum wires destined for use as mandrels, grids, and coils in radio tubes and as filaments in light bulbs has rendered inadequate the standard (sampling) approach to the control of wire diameter and other physical properties. A study has been made of the reaction mechanisms occurring during the salt-roast process to form water-soluble sodium vanadate compounds from the vanadium oxide compounds present in vanadium-bearing ores and concentrates. Two reactions have been identified, either of which lead to water-soluble compounds--oxidation of sodium chloride by water vapor and. oxidation of sodium chloride by oxygen. The former reaction has been found to be predominant in the salt-roast process. A kinetic treatment of the data has shown that for the formation of sodium metavanadate the rate-controlling step in the reaction, in which sodium chloride is oxidized by water vapor is the decomposition of a species containing water and sodiumm chloride, on the surface at the gas-solid interface. For the formation of sodium pyrovanadate, the rate-controlling step is the decomposition of a species containing water and sodium metavaradate on the surface. The transportation of water through the system, perhaps as a sodium chloride-water complex or a sodium metavanadate-water complex, and the actual chemical reaction are relatively fast compared to the initial surface decomposition step. A similar treatment on the data for the oxidation, of sodium chloride by oxygen has shown that the rate-controlling step, is the actual transportation of oxygen from the gas-solid interface to the reactive site. This transportation is by a sequence of two diffusion processes. Transportation during the early stages of the reaction is by the diffusion of oxygen through a continuous layer of reaction product. After, the first few minutes of reaction time a second diffusion process begins and is continuous for the remainder of the reaction. This second diffusion process involves the diffusion of oxygen, through a layer of reaction product that has developed voids around which the oxygen must diffuse. The hindering, nature of this latter process causes the rate of transportation of oxygen to the reaction site to be considerably slower than by the simple diffusion mechanism initially followed. A thermodynamic treatment of the data has shown that the energy of activation for the decomposition of the water-sodium chloride species on the surface is -12.1 Kcal. per mole. For the decomposition of the water-sodium metavanadate species on the surface' the energy of activation is -15.1 Kcal. per mole. The results of this study indicate the limiting mechanisms of the basic reactions occurring during the salt-roast process. These results suggest what variables should be examined in applying this information to actual plant operations.

U.S. scientists attempting to maintain continuous surveillance of scientific information are confronted with two acute problems: The steady, even spectacular; increase in the volume of such information and the fact that much of it is published in unfamiliar foreign languages, According to the National Science Foundation, almost one-third of the world's scientific literature is published in languages that are read by less than 5 percent of U.S. scientists. Most scientists in the United States must rely on abstract journals and translations to obtain information on developments in research and investigations conducted in the non-English-speaking countries. However, there are problems involved in procuring suitable abstracts and translations and in obtaining such information as cheaply and rapidly as possible.

Review of equipment, performance, and shaft design plans including head-frames for sinking and forms for lining are given. Also included are comparative data for shafts of 11 x20 ft and 193/4 x 30 ft with 756 and 666-ft depths, respectively. Advantage from curtain wall installation with "slip forms" which warrant consideration for normal lining are outlined. A preliminary review is also made of "chemical grouting" to stop water inflow leakage with Halliburton equipment and service. Two coal mine shafts recently completed in Franklin County, Ill., afford experience and accomplishment to warrant review. These shafts provide access to a tract with a potential recovery of one hundred million tons. This work provided the initial sinking by other than a contractor's organization since 1918. Four additional shafts required during the interim were sunk under contract arrangement with others. Supervisory contact and inspection afforded experience to govern planning and conduct of the recent work. TEST DRILLING Core test holes were drilled within each of the two shaft locations. Four additional cable tool holes were drilled on a radius of 700 ft from the shaft bottom to determine the coal seam elevations and govern the underground layout plans for each shaft. A graphic log of the hoist shaft test drillhole is shown by Fig. 1. A very soft sandstone was found at a depth of 16 ft. Cored recovery of the sandstone proved much weaker than the overlying compacted sand secured with coring facilities for soil recovery. Gradation from the very soft sandstone to fairly hard material occurred with the next 14 ft, extending to a depth of 30 ft. The weak character within the upper portion entailed need of adequate protection when sinking as described later. A part of the sandstone provided sufficient porosity and permeability to warrant further investigation. Adjacent cable tool drilling for temporary water supply disclosed inflow was limited to 2 gpm with a depth of 40 ft. It was increased to 12 gpm during the next 50 ft of drilling and occasioned subsequent precaution when sinking. General arrangement of facilities for sinking the hoist shaft is shown by Fig. 2. An available steel frame building was used to accommodate the hoist, compressor, shop, and shower or change room. The stiff leg derrick with 90-ft length of boom permitted removal of forms from the wood shop to the storage area or delivery within the shaft. Reinforcing steel and other needs were similarly handled, in addition to headframe erection. The headframe was placed over one end of the shaft to enable passage of forms for lining through the adjacent half next to the stiff leg derrick. Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine feasible roasting methods for the removal and the recovery of germanium, cadmium, and lead as enriched fractions from sphalerite concentrates. The two types of roasting processes studied were: (1) Batch, with a stationary bed, and (2) continuous, with a suspended bed, Results indicated that either method gave satisfactory metallurgical recoveries} but the continuous process is recommended because of inherent advantages. Final products were enriched fractions that could be treated by conventional methods for production of metallic germanium, cadmium, and lead. In the batch process, the concentrates were placed in a large tube furnace and heated at 1,080° C, an average of 3 hours. During the heating period, inert, reducing} or sulfur-laden gases were passed over the stationary charge to convey the sublimed metal sulfides from the hot portion of the tube to a lower temperature condensing zone at the end of the tube, where the metal sulfides were collected on baffles and recovered. In the batch and fluidizing roasting processes alike, the gases passed over or through the charge and served only as carriers for the sublimates and as suspension media in fluidization roasting. Since both processes depended on the volatilization, at relatively high vapor pressures, of the sulfides of germanium, cadmium, and lead, it was imperative that very little oxygen come in contact with the charge to alter the sulfide minerals. Germanium has a high affinity for oxygen, but in this instance it was buffered by being in solid solution in zinc sulfide.

Bench-scale tests were performed by the Federal Bureau of Mines on lignite and subbituminous coal at pressures to 1,000 p.s.i.g. (pounds per square inch gage) in atmospheres of hydrogen or nitrogen to obtain information concerning the influence of pressure on carbonization of normally noncaking coals. The distribution of gaseous, liquid, and solid products as a function of processing pressure was determined. Except for special experiments, the carbonization was at 940° F. In a hydrogen atmosphere above 400 p.s.i.g., agglomeration of the solid residue (especially with lignite) became noticeable and increased directly with the processing pressure. Although in some instances the solid particles fused together, the mechanical strength of the agglomerate was always low. On the basis of visual inspection, the coals agglomerated in the following order of decreasing intensity: (1) Steam-dried lignite; (2) lignite; and (3) subbituminous coal. Addition of lignite tar in quantities to 25 percent by weight of charge did not increase agglomeration or change the carbonization characteristics of the coal.

In 1928, the Coal Carbonization Section of the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the American Gas Association, began a survey of the carbonizing properties of American coals. A standard test method for evaluating the carbonizing properties of coals that met the following conditions was developed: To yield products similar to those obtained in commercial operations. To produce yields sufficient to permit analyses and tests of quality. To be laboratory size. To be convenient to operate. To permit reproducible control of test conditions and results. This test method has become known as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) test (53),3/ and more coals of greater variety have been tested in this apparatus than in any other of similar scale.

The Federal Bureau of Mines promotes the use of safe and effective dust-collecting devices for rock drilling in coal mines. To insure that such devices are available to the coal-mining industry, the Bureau issues certificates of performance for dust-collecting systems and certificates of approval for dust collectors and rock drills or other mining equipment with integral dust-collecting systems that meet the requirements of an established Schedule.4/ Investigations are conducted under the provisions of the current revision of this Schedule by engineers of the Branch of Health Research. This circular describes briefly the requirements and procedure for obtaining certificates of performance or approval and lists equipment that has been certified as permissible under Schedule 25 or its revisions as of January 31, 1961. The names and addresses of companies to which certificates have been issued are listed alphabetically at the end of this circular.

The behavior of particulate non-metallic materials in moving contact with smooth surfaces is of interest and concern to manufacturers and users of abrasives, of fillers, and of pigments alike. The theoretical aspects of the subject have been treated to considerable extent in the literature, and correlatic,ns are available that attempt to relate various methods of hardness determination." 2 The particle size and friability are characteristics of the abrasive that are not related to the smooth surface. The hardness, on the other hand, may be visualized as relative to that of the smooth surface. In a study of abrasive action, the role that hardness, per se, plays is a complicated one. For it is necessary to compare the "hardness" of the abrasive, usually a non-metallic, with that of the smooth surface, generally a metal. Hardness of non-metallics is defined as resistance to scratch and is almost universally described with respect to the Mohs scale.3 Minerals have been rated by Mohs numerically from the softest (talc = 1) to the hardest (diamond = 10). By definition, a mineral has a designated hardness when it is scratched by the standard that is numerically just above it on the scale; and conversely, when it scratches the standard that is just below it. Hardness of metals. however.. implies resistance to indentation, a property that has been measured by a number of methods. In fact, the indentation hardnesses of the standard minerals on the hlohs scale have been determined by the Rockwell tester. Reproduced below are two versions of this correlation. 'A conversion chart, prepared by Wilson Mechanical Instruments Division of American Chain and Cable Co., merely gives the conversion from Rockwell to Knoop hardness. The relation between Knoop indentation hardness and Mohs scale has been reported by G. S. Smith — A New Scale of Hardness, The Engineer, Aug. 26. 1949. G. F. Kinney in Engineerin Properties and Aplications of Plastics reports the Rockwell hardness of the minerals directly in the Mohs scale. The question immediately arises as to whether this relation is valid when applied in reverse; namely,

The abundances and abundance relationships of lead, zinc, copper and silver in the major sulphide lenses at Broken Hill are examined, and their possible geochemical significance discussed.When expressed as atoms per cent, zinc is the most abundant base metal throughout the whole .group of orebodies, the highest average lead: zinc ratio (No. 2 lens) being about 0·45, the lowest (No. 1 lensZinc Lode group) being in the 0·12-0 ·14 range. Lead and silver are clearly higher in the lower two orebodies, but the abundance of zinc shows no apparent relationship with stratigraphical position. Among the base metals copper is conspicuously low and remarkably uniform, a feature noted in other conformable orebodies.Although, as has been recognised for many years, abundances of silver and lead, and lead and zinc, are sympathetically related, correlation within the pairs is variable and generally of low degree. Silver and lead show distinctly the better correlation, particularly in No. 3 lens. On the basis of lead: zinc ratios, No. 2' and No. 3· lenses, on the one hand, and the No. 1 lenses, Rhodonitic and Siliceous Zinc Lodes on the other, constitute two groups. However on the basis of silver : lead ratios, No. 3 lens stands alone, No. 2 lens showing clear affinities with the higher layers. Ternary relationships between copper-zinc-Iead and silver-zinc-Iead emphasize the very close constitutional relationship between the No. 1 lenses and the two "zinc lodes".The possible implications of these relationships are then discussed in the light of the' two principal theories-hydrothermal replacement or chemical sedimentation-held for the formation of the Broken Hill ores. It is pointed out that the ratios of the four metals in the ores are rather different from those found in most igneous and sedimentary rocks, and in seawater. For 'example, whereas copper and zinc are present in almost equal amounts in most terrestrial materials, copper in the ores is only about one-hundredth of the amount of zinc. Lead has increased somewhat, but the ratio of silver to lead has fallen; in spite of its recognition as a source of silver, the Broken Hill lode is impoverished in silver with respect to lead as compared with most common terrestrial materials.No solutions are offered to these prob'lems of abundance. An etching technique.has been used to investigate the dislocation structure of deformed @-brass single crystals. Isolated single ended pileups have been observed, and it is shown that, in certain cases, the configurations of such pileups agree with theoretical predictions. Many discrete pileups within heavily deformed regions have also been detected and the influence of surrounding dislocations on these groups are reported and discussed. Divergences between the experimental and theoretical spacings in the isolated pileups and the origin of the stress maintaining the pileups are discussed. THE spatial configuration of a linear array of identical dislocations has been evaluated theoretically by Eshelby, Frank, and Nabarro.' Of particular interest is the equilibrium spacing of a series of dislocations under a uniform shear sti-ess when the leading dislocation is held fixed in the lattice; such an array is termed a single ended pileup. Eshelby, Frank, and Nabarro' found that an explicit analytical solution to the problem of n dislocations in a pileup is not possible, but they were able to derive approximate formulae applicable under various limiting conditions. An alternative method of determining the equilibrium configuration was proposed by Leibfried and Leibfried and Haasen in which the discrete dislocations are replaced by a continuous dislocation density. This technique was used by Head and Louat to solve in first approximation, a number of problems of particular interest, eg., single and double ended pileups. Head has also solved numerically a number of specific configurations involving up to six dislocations. Recently Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf has obtained numerical solutions for single-ended pileups containing between three and seventy dislocations, thus making possible a comparison between appropriate experimental results and accurate theoretical values. The considerable use of the pileup concept in theories of plastic flow has stimulated a number of attempts to observe such arrays experimentally. There is of course considerable intrinsic value in revealing an isolated pileup because a direct check on the elastic theory of dislocations then becomes possible. The only technique generally applicable for studying pileups in bulk metal specimens is selective etching of the point of emergence of individual dislocations. DISPERSION hardening as an alloying process has aroused increasing interest in the past few years. This alloying procedure, in which an insoluble phase is dispersed randomly through a metal or alloy, is believed to be especially suited for the attainment of creep strength at elevated temperatures since the dispersed phase is metallurgically stable. Another advantage is that the physical properties of the matrix phase, such as electrical conductivity, remain relatively unaffected by alloying. These two characteristics resulted in interest in the applicability of dispersion hardening to copper and copper alloys. A study of copper alloys prepared by powder metallurgy methods has shown some strengthening from oxide dispersions.' However, powder metallurgy processing would not be economical for large scale production of dispersion hardened copper-base alloys. Therefore, the research described in this article was initiated to examine methods of forming dispersion alloys which would not require powder metallurgy processing. If powder metallurgy processing is to be avoided, a method must be found by which the dispersion material can be introduced into and dispersed through the melt before casting. When the dispersed phase is an oxide or similar nonmetallic, it is extremely difficult to form a satisfactory liquid: solid dispersion since successful mixing requires that the melt wet the dispersed phase. It is almost impossible to force a nonwetted particle beneath the melt surface. This difficulty can be avoided, however, if the oxide particles are produced in molten copper by reaction within the melt. The problem would then reduce to maintaining randomness until solidification. Four procedures were considered for producing an oxide particle within molten copper by reaction. In all cases, the intent was to react oxygen (0) with a reactive metal (X) to form an oxide (XO) within the copper melt. These reactions were as follows: 1) (Cu-X), + (O)g (Cu)1 + (XO)S [1] 2) (Cu-X)1 + (Cu2O)s (Cu)x + (XO)S [2] 3) (Cu-OK)1 + (Cu-X)1 (Cu)1+(XO)9 [3] 4) (Cu-OK)1 +(X)s (Cu)1 +(XO)s [4] The reactions were carried out in an 8-lb melt of 99.98 pct Cu maintained in the vicinity of 2200oF by induction heating. Where possible the amount of the reactants was controlled to give 1 to 5 vol pct oxide. Mechanical stirring during the reaction period was used to minimize agglomeration of the reaction product. The presence of a reaction product was determined metallographically by study of an ingot cast from the melt at the end of the reaction period. Reaction [I] was studied by dissolving aluminum in the melt followed by forcing oxygen through the melt. The melts became quite sluggish during the reaction period suggesting that A12O3 was formed. However, the reaction product rose out of the melt rapidly, possibly due to the flushing action of the oxygen stream, and little dispersed phase was formed. Reaction [2] was examined by dissolving aluminum, silicon, or nickel i; the melt and then adding Cu20 (melting point 2250F). This procedure was unsuccessful. I have availed myself of the opportunity to prepare, and to give this talk because, as incumbent Chairman, I am directed by the Bylaws of the Council of Education to make an Annual Report of the Council activities which have transpired during the past year. In addition, and inasmuch as I have this captive audience, I am taking the liberty to express also some beliefs I hold about various other elements of Mineral Industry education. First, my report is that constructive progress has been achieved in the Council of Education during 1960-61. These advancements have been particularly notable through projects carried on by the Committee on Meetings and Programs, by the Student Chapters Committee, by the Accrediting Affairs Committee and by the Committee for Securing Better Representation of Mineral Industry Colleges. I believe each of these groups will report concerning details of their respective programs at the Business Meeting of the Council. On the other hand, not as much has been done in some areas of work as I had hoped would be the case when I took office as Chairman last February. Let me make clear that these delinquencies, for the most part, have resulted through my ineptness in handling of affairs; they are not caused by the failure to perform various assignments which I have given to council members.

In 1956 the discovery of nickel on Jumbo Mountain, Snohomish County, Washington, focused attention on this part of the Cascade Range, far more renowned for its timber than for its mineral resources. Hand specimens assaying as high as 13 pct Ni encouraged Discovery Mines Inc. of Mount Vernon, Wash., to stake 12 claims in Township 31 North, Range 9 East of the Willamette Meridian. The property was leased to Climax Molybdenum Co. in January 1957. Trenching, sampling, and geologic studies were carried out during the late summer of 1957 when most of the snow had disappeared. Although the deposits are only about four miles south of the logging town of Darrington and about two miles. as the crow flies, southeast of the end of a good gravel road from that town, all camp supplies and equipment were air-dropped, owing to the extremely rugged nature of the terrain. GEOLOGY The rocks of Jumbo Mountain comprise a series of folded Tertiary sediments forming a belt one half to three quarters of a mile wide, trending northwest about parallel to the strike of the beds. This belt is sandwiched between two extensive in-trusives—gabbro on the northeast and quartz dio-rite on the southwest—and has been intruded by dikes of fresh and serpentinized dunite. Shear zones follow many of the dunite-sedimentary rock contacts, and in these the nickel mineralization is concentrated. A few transverse faults offset the sediments and ultrabasics. Sedimentary Rocks: Two kinds of quartzite make up the greater part of the sedimentary section. One is dark purplish gray, very fine-grained, and thin-bedded; the other is light gray to white, medium-grained, and well-bedded. Locally the light-colored quart lites contain grit and conglomerate horizons, rich in pebbles of white chert and very fine-grained quartzite. Intercalations of dark argillites near the summit of the mountain give many of the cliffs a striking banded appearance. Dark gray to black, aphanitic, thin-bedded argillites occur throughout the entire sedimentary belt. Beds vary from a few inches to a few tens of feet thick and some, near the summit, contain numerous fossile (willow?) leaves. Only the thicker beds were mapped. The sediments are quite fresh on the northeastern side of the belt and become more metamorphosed (hornfelsed) toward the southwestern side. Brown biotite is present in the metasediments in increasing amounts as the quartz diorite is approached. Near the intrusion, porphyroblasts of plagioclase, up to 1 in. across, testify to the soaking of sedimentary rocks by solutions emanating from the quartz diorite. Most of the sediments mapped lie along the southwestern limb of an anticline, the axis of which follows the crest of the mountain and plunges at a low angle to the northwest.

The percentage of coal cleaned mechanically has increased greatly in the past 30 years. This technological change in preparation methods, accompanied by mechanical innovations in most phases of coal mining, has enabled the industry to supply quality coals at competitive prices. The Bureau of Mines has contributed to this progress by conducting research on coal-preparation problems, by evaluating the performance of domestic-and foreign-made preparation equipment, and by recording advances as they occur in industrial coal-cleaning practices. The Bureau's work in this field is recorded in the more than 150 technical and scientific publications listed in this volume. These reports, published by the Bureau over the past half century, document the Nation's progress in a vitally important phase of fuel technology.

The development, by the mechanism of volume diffusion, of a grain boundary groove on an interface separating a solid phase and a saturated fluid phase is calculated under the following assumptions: 1) isotropy of the interfacial free energy 's, 2) applicability of the Gibbs-Thompson formula relating curvature and chemical potential, 3) a nearly planar groove surface. The groove profile is found to have a .fixed shape and linear dimensions that are proportional to (time)1/3. The constant of proportionality is evaluated and involves ?s in such a way that the latter my be evaluated from grooving kinetics. A grain boundary that intersects an interphase interface will tend to produce a groove along the line of intersection (Fig. 1). The ultimate motivation for the formation of the groove is the reduction in interfacial free energ that occurs as the grain boundary contracts. Smith has discussed the way in which the free energy of the interfaces determines their dihedral angles at the groove root and has given a detailed analysis of the effect of the dihedral angles upon the nature the microstructures developed in polyphase alloys. Herring2 has extended the considerations to the case in which the free energy of an interface depends on its orientation and has thus added torque terms to the condition for interface equilibrium. Although the grain boundary and the interphase interface may quickly achieve the proper equilibrium angles where they intersect, as determined by the balance of equivalent tensions and torques,"2 the groove will generally continue to grow (though with decreasing speed). Thermodynamically, this continued growth reflects the fact that the lowest free energy cannot be achieved until the entire grain boundary has been eliminated; mechanistically, the growth occurs in response to inhomogeneities of chemical potential that are caused by the constraint of fixed dihedral angles at the groove root. The latter point is illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows that atoms* near the groove are on the convex side of a cylindrically curved surface and therefore have a higher chemical potential than atoms on the flat interface beyond. Thus atoms tend to leave the curved groove shoulders and force the groove to deepen. When both phases are solid additional chemical potential gradient may arise from whatever strain fields are necessary to insure continuity of material across the interface. In the discussion that follows, this complication due to strain will not occur since we always assume one phase to be a fluid and the other a solid. The transport processes that may operate to permit growth of the groove are surface (interface)* diffusion, volume diffusion in the phase on either side of the interface, and evaporation-condensation when one phase is gaseous. (Also a melting-freezing process is responsible for groove enlargement on a solid-melt interface as discussed in Sec. VI). The theory of grain boundary grooving has been discussed in detail for the processes of surface diffusion and of one type of evaporation-condensation.3'4 The theoretical predictions for the mechanism of surface diffusion have been confirmed in an experimental study of grooving kinetics in copper.5 In this paper, the theory of groove development by volume diffusion will be presented. Volume diffusion can occur either by atomic migration in the solid S or by diffusion of S atoms in the fluid phase, or solvent, adjacent to the groove surface. As discussed in Sec. V, volume diffusion in the solid should be less important than surface diffusion in forming a groove. Apart from verifying this statement then, the main interest of the present analysis centers on diffusion in an external solvent. The solvent may be either a liquid (e.g., water, or-
