"6.1. INTRODUCTIONThis chapter comments on some of the more common types of agreements related to property examination and acquisition, other than the farm-in/joint venture agreement or common undertaking, which is dealt with in the next two chapters. Many of the comments made in Part IV of Chapter 4 apply equally to any such agreement. In addition, many of the comments in Chapter 8 and the examples in Volume II are most certainly relevant to many other types of agreement.6.2. RIGHTS OF FIRST REFUSAL1A right of first refusal is a right that obligates an owner to offer his property, or an interest therein, to the holder of the first right if the owner intends to sell or otherwise dispose of it. It may be triggered either by the owner wishing to offer his property for sale or by receipt of a bona fide offer to purchase his interest from an “outside” third party. The mechanics and procedures to implement a first right should be set out clearly in the agreement, and their basics are the same, whether the first right is a stand-alone document or is part of an acquisition agreement.2Rights of first refusal are common in agreements to permit some control over the disposition of an interest and there they can be a valuable provision. However, some explorationists feel that they are also a good stand-alone agreement to have while a property is being evaluated to decide whether or not it is worth optioning. The reasoning is that such an arrangement will tie up the property to allow a quick look and, if the property looks interesting, the balance of the term of the first right will give an ample exclusive period of time to negotiate with the owner and settle an acquisition agreement. In addition, the explorationist is protected by the first right if the owner decides to negotiate a deal with another party."

"The rapid developments in computer vision and computational resources are creating new possibilities for the use of machine vision systems for industrial control. A number of commercial image analysis systems exist, and research into improved measurements of froth performance is ongoing. An integral part of the implementation of these systems is the validation of the relationship between image analysis measurements and flotation cell performance. This paper discusses the factors affecting concentrate flow and presents the results obtained from one such system with respect to its ability to estimate the flow of concentrate from a flotation cell.The relationship between froth flow speed and the rate of recovery of concentrate from a flotation cell was investigated on two industrial operations, both processing PGM (Platinum Group Metal) bearing ores. Results are presented that show a relationship between froth flow speed and concentrate yield."

Lead-tin solders are commonly used in electronic packaging due to their unique combination of electrical, chemical, physical, thermal and mechanical properties. Since it is known that lead and lead containing alloys cause great environmental concern and health hazards it is necessary to replace lead in solder materials. Besides the environmental concerns new technologies in electronic packaging require new and improved solders. In most cases the new solders will consist of ternary or quarternary alloy systems, the main component will be tin or indium and the second element could be bismuth, silver, copper and gold and to improve certain properties a third element will be added. For a third element zinc, nickel, antimony and aluminum can be considered. This report will concentrate on solders containing zinc as an environmental safe element.

"The Code was developed in 2004 through the Collaboration Agreement between Institution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) and the Ministry of Mining (Chile) in Dec 2002. It is an amalgamation of current practices with respect to standards and procedures for exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves for the purpose of public reporting. Certification is required to prepare and issue information on mineral assets according to the guidelines that regulate the technical, economic, and environmental aspects that satisfy the conditions set by the Chilean capital and financial markets.The Mineral Resources Committee of the Instititution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) is pleased to introduce theCode for the Certification of Exploration Prospects, Mineral Resources and Reserves which is the result of a Collaboration Agreement between the IIMCh and the Ministry of Mining established in December, 2002.This code synthetizes the present practice of the mining industry in regard to standards and procedures applied to exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves with the purpose of reporting publicly on financial instruments based on these mine assets in the capital markets. These standards follow general criteria already adopted and applied by capital markets in those countries characterized by a very dynamic and well developed mining sector such as Australia, Canada, Southafrica, United Kingdom, and others. The work done by the Mineral Resources Committee of the IIMCh has had the recognition of the Combined Reserves International Reporting Standards Committee (CRIRSCO) that leads the establishement of an international code in these matters. CRIRISCO is an entity formed by representatives of the countries previously mentioned, a representative of the Society of Mining Engineers of the UStates and a representative of the IIMCh. The Institution thanks the Ministry of Mining, the representatives of these Ministry in the Mineral Resources Committee, and specially the Minister of Mining, Sr. Alfonso Dulanto Rencoret due to the genuine support given to the IIMCh in the preparation of this Code.The Institution also thanks the Superintendencia de Valores y Seguros (SVS) because of the help given continuously to the Committee as well as by the interchange of opinions and suggestions received during the preparation of this document."

Within the Ag-Pb-S ternary system, the boundaries of the immiscibility region together with the tie-line distributions were re-established at 925°C by the equilibrium-quenching technique where samples were kept in evacuated and sealed silica capsules. Activities of Pb were measured by the dew-point method along the Ag-Pb binary at 925°C, 1100° and l200°C, positive deviations were observed and the results were modeled by the Krupkowski formalism. Activities of Ag, Pb, and S, along the ternary miscibility gap were calculated at 925°C by utilizing the boundaries binary thermodynamics, phase equilibria and tie-lines. Activities of PbS within the pseudobinary Ag2S-PbS mattes were also measured by the dew-point technique and the results were again modeled by the Krupkowski formation where negative deviations were observed.

Gas stirring, simultaneous arcing, chemical additions are some basic steps in the secondary steel making. From tap to team however, there are enough uncertainties and several in-situ decision making required to match the fmal composition and temperature in the given amount of processing time. Currently available control algorithms rely on overall material and heat balance coupled with a self-learning regression based tuning of model constants. In this paper we demonstrate the capabilities of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in modeling and analyzing the thermo-chemical aspects of secondary Steelmaking. These models take advantage of scientific and engineering advances in computational tools and provide almost real time speed of analysis. This can be a very effective tool for operator training, process debugging and improvement as well as new innovations. "The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) Inc. developed a guide of minimum standards for reporting exploration results, mineral resources, and mineral reserves for the purpose of informing the general public. The SME Guide has been adopted by the Society.History1. In 1988, at the request of members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME), Inc., the President of SME formed Working Party #79, Ore Reserve Definition, with the mission to develop guidelines for the public reporting of exploration results, resources, and reserves. A Subcommittee was appointed by the Working Party to draft these guidelines and submit recommendations to SME. The Subcommittee's recommendations were published by SME in the April 1991 issue of ""Mining Engineering"", and as a document entitled ""A Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, Resources, and Reserves"" (the SME Guide) in January 1992. Work continued on an ad-hoc basis until 1996, when Working Party #79 was renamed the SME Resources and Reserves Committee and became a standing committee.In 1994, the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions (CMMI) started a concerted international effort to create a set of international definitions for reporting mineral resources and mineral reserves. An ad-hoc International Definitions Group was formed, with representatives from mining and metallurgical institutions from the United States (SME), Australia (AusIMM), Canada (CIM), the United Kingdom (IMM) and South Africa (SAIMM). A major breakthrough came on October 18, 1997 when the CMMI International Definitions Group met in Denver, Colorado and reached a provisional agreement (the Denver Accord) on definitions of mineral resources and mineral reserves. Concurrently, and since 1992, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) was developing an international framework classification for mineral resources and mineral reserves. Starting in October 1998, joint meetings were held in Geneva between the CMMI International Definitions Group and the UN-ECE Task Force, resulting in agreement to incorporate the CMMI definitions into the UN framework classification."

The Timbarra opencut gold mine is located about 30 km(19 miles) southeast of Tenterfield in northern NSW some 4 hours by car from Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland in Australia. It was a small operation designed to produce about 40000 ounces of gold per annum utilising contract mining and company owned crushing plant feeding heap leach pads. This is a standard setup except that the mine owner was in charge of all aspects of drill & blast design even though a contract drilling & blasting (shotfiring) service was being provided. The major problem was that the blasting operations were yielding massive amounts of oversize due to the jointed partially weathered nature of the granite. This was adversely affecting all downstream aspects of the operation as well reducing gold output as ore boulders were being dozed over the side of the mine as they were impinging on mining productivity. The oversize problem had to be solved as the mine was struggling to achieve design gold output. Significant design & trialing effort using minesite resources were utilised to reduce the oversize but this failed even when powder factors up to 1kg/bcm(1.68lb/yd) were used. Dyno Consult from Dyno Nobel were therefore called to investigate, review & trial options to reduce oversize from the top flitch.

When dealing with displacement auger piling, some general and fundamental issues have to be considered, irrespective of the system. More than with other pile types, the interplay between the soil conditions and the design and execution is of outstanding importance. This paper intends to address these issues and to summarize some critical matters in terms of design, execution and control such as : ? Importance of a reliable soil investigation ; ? Summary of the design as it is addressed in Europe for this category of piles ; ? Criteria for a good choice and control of the correct asset of the piles ; ? Importance of the concreting phase; ? Relation between the power and the engine characteristics of the drilling equipment with the final bearing capacity. For each of these issues detailed examples will be given as well as results of load tests and in-situ control during execution.

"The VALMIN Code was developed and formally adopted by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) in 1995 and a revision was issued in 1998. The VALMIN Code applies to all relevant reports under the Australian Corporations Law, including submissions to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).The VALMIN Code and Guidelines sets standards for the preparation and commissioning of independent assessment and/or valuation reports on mineral and petroleum assets or mineral and petroleum securities.It is mandatory for AusllvI:M's members to follow this Code in these relevant circumstances and failure to do so will result in serious sanction of the member by the Ausllvllvfs Ethics Committee. Public support for the use of this Code has been given by regulators (ASX/ASIC) and market participants ( eg major accountancy firms). It is also endorsed as a guide to general best practice in project assessment and valuation.This paper will discuss how the VALMIN Code has worked in practice over the past few years. It will also examine areas where the Code could be improved and how it could form the basis of a new Canadian Code for mineral property valuation."

The acid mine drainage (AMD) situation at three opencast collieries in the Witbank Coalfield, South Africa, was evaluated from different perspectives. Twenty-seven test pits were dug into the spoils of these collieries to characterise the in situ conditions of spoils of varying age. Detailed static testing was done on surrounding drill holes and additional samples were taken from the test pits. Selected samples were tested using different techniques, namely ABA, mineralogy and kinetic tests. Groundwater monitoring boreholes from the areas surrounding these spoils were also used for characterisation. The ABA results compared favourably with the in situ determinations; acidic test pits proved to be potentially acid-generating from ABA, even when the samples had neutral paste pH. Kinetic test results showed these samples to yield low pH leachate over the test period. In several of these results, the theoretical depletion of neutralising potential and the onset of acidity were well matched. NAG pH-values and final observed water chemistry corresponded for the cells predicted by ABA to acidify, but compared poorly in cells that did not acidify. Results from the non-acidic spoils were consistent with the in situ observations. Alternative kinetic test methodologies were also employed. Duplicate samples were tested in humidity cells and in aerated trays that were manually wetted on a regular basis. Results from these tests showed an excellent correlation. Detailed mineralogical determinations using XRD and XRF were used for comparison to the ABA and, in some cases, humidity cell results. These comparisons show that the ABA results are consistent with the results expected from the mineralogy. The conclusion from these assessments is that ABA, in most cases, provides information that can be correlated to the field, mineralogy and to humidity cells. The use of multiple techniques leads to a higher degree of confidence in the use of the data.

An advanced semi-stochastic algorithm for constrained multi-objective optimization has been adapted and combined with experimental testing and verification to determine optimum concentrations of alloying elements in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant H-Series austenitic stainless steel alloys. The objective was to simultaneously maximize a number of alloy's mechanical properties. This research will result in a rigorous tool for the design of high-strength H-Series steels and other types of alloys unattainable by any means existing at the present time. Such a material-by-design tool will also be able to reduce or minimize the need for the addition of expensive elements such as Cr, Ni, Co, Nb, Ti, V, etc. and still obtain the optimum properties of an alloy.

"One of the cornerstones of NI43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects is the technical report. The purpose of the report is to provide a summary of the scientific and technical information concerning mineral exploration, development, and production activities on a mineral property that is material to an issuer. The reports must be prepared in accordance with NI43101 and Form 43-101F1 Technical Report and the information must be current as of the date of the filing of the technical report. As these reports provide important information to the investing public, qualified persons preparing these reports should, as much as possible, write in plain, simple language that can be easily read and understood by people who are not geoscientists or engineers. So let’s review some of the common deficiencies with technical reports. Non-current technical report Some of the factors you should consider when determining if your previously filed technical report is still current are as follows: •,Is there new technical information on the property, such as drilling, assays, metallurgical testwork? •,Have you made changes to key assumptions, parameters relating to mineral resources or mineral reserves, or economic analysis? If you have completed the previously recommended work, are your recommendations still current? Similarly, are your report recommendations consistent with what you are telling your shareholders or disclosing in the use of proceeds in your offering documents? For example, if the recommendations in the report consist of further exploration and metallurgical test-work prior to completing a preliminary feasibility study and you have completed the proposed work and are now raising money for a final feasibility study, the report is probably not current."

When stress wave propagates through fractured rock masses, the wave will be slowed and attenuated due to the presence of these fractures. If the amplitude of stress wave is large enough to mobilize nonlinear deformation of these fractures, they will present different effects on one-dimensional P-wave propagation compared with those of linear deformational fractures. The static BB model is adopted to describe the nonlinear deformational behavior. Method of characteristics combined with displacement discontinuity theory is used to build analytical solutions of wave particle velocities and wave stresses. These equations are numerically solved with sufficient accuracy.

Anion exchange in HCl media is considered an efficient alternative to the combination of the conventional purification methods. Anion-exchange distribution functions have been determined for cobalt and the main impurity elements by the technique of batch equilibration. Results were confirmed by spectrophotometric investigations and elution tests. Based on the new and the available distribution functions, combined with the assessment of thermodynamic stability, a procedure of anion exchange separation has been devised to eliminate virtually all the impurities from the cobalt-chloride solution. Separation of copper has been enhanced by the introduction of a preliminary step under reduced conditions. The rest of the impurities are eliminated in a second anion-exchange step applying rinsing and elution stages under oxidized conditions. The optimum parameters of the procedure have been determined according to performance characteristics (purification ratios, yields and volume efficiencies) derived from the analysis of elution curves obtained with laboratory scale ion-exchange columns. Special computer programs have been developed to facilitate thermodynamic simulation, analytical correction and data processing.

ABSTRACT: The safe design of excavations created in a fractured rock mass is of paramount importance in rock engineering. Depending on the nature of the stress regime acting on an excavation, and the associated deformational behaviour of the rock mass surrounding the excavation, a number of potential failure mechanisms exist. These involve a combination of shear failure on existing joints, extension of critically oriented joints and propagation of new fractures through previously intact rock. Conventional numerical codes usually adopt either a continuum or discontinuum approach; this often results in significant over simplification and kinematic limitations particularly when modelling complex rock mass behaviour in the close vicinity of excavations. This paper describes the results from several case examples using a combined finite element-discrete element code, ELFEN that incorporates a crack propagation mode. Through the use of selected rock engineering examples, the authors demonstrate the potential of the code in the realistic simulation of complex rock failure both in underground and surface excavation applications. RÉSUMÉ: La conception sûre des excavations créées dans une masse de roche fracturée est d'importance primordiale dans la géotechnique. Selon la nature du régime d'effort autour d’une excavation, et le déformation associé de la masse de roche autour de l'excavation, il exsite un certain nombre de mécanismes potentiels d'échec. Ceux-ci comportent une combinaison d'échec de cisaillement sur les joints existants, la prolongation des joints d’orientation critique et la propagation de nouvelles ruptures dans la roche précédemment intacte. Les codes numériques conventionnels adoptent habituellement l’approche, soit d’un continuum, soit de discontinuum; ceci a souvent comme conséquence une sursimplification significative et les limitations cinématiques en particulier en modelant le comportement complexe de la masse de roche très proche des excavations. Cet article décrit les résultats de plusieurs exemples de cas en utilisant un code qui s’agit d’une combination d’élément discret et d'élément fini, ELFEN qui incorpore un mode de propagation de fissure. Par l'utilisation des exemples choisis géotechniques, les auteurs démontrent le potentiel du code dans la simulation réaliste de l'échec complexe de roche pour les applications aux excavations soit au fond soit à l’extérieure. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Das sichere Design der Aushöhlungen, die in einer zerbrochenen Felsenmasse verursacht werden, ist vom paramount Wert in der Felsentechnik. Abhängig von der Natur des Druckregimes, das auf einer Aushöhlung und dem dazugehörigen deformationalen Verhalten der Felsenmasse umgibt die Aushöhlung fungiert, bestehen eine Anzahl von möglichen Ausfalleinheiten. Diese beziehen eine Kombination des Scherausfalls auf vorhandenen Verbindungen, Verlängerung der kritisch orientierten Verbindungen und Ausbreitung der neuen Brüche durch vorher intakten Felsen. Herkömmliche numerische Codes nehmen normalerweise entweder ein kontinuum oder discontinuum Annäherung an; dieses ergibt häufig bedeutende Übervereinfachung und kinematische Beschränkungen, besonders wenn es kompliziertes Felsenmasseverhalten in der Nähe der Aushöhlungen modelliert. Dieses Papier beschreibt die Resultate von einigen Fallbeispielen mit einem kombinierten begrenzten Element - getrennten Elementcode, ELFEN, das einen Sprungausbreitungmodus enthält. The kinetic study on desulfurization of copper matte by gas bubbling was designed under the presumptions of lower FeO activity and of no slag formation, Copper matte with 59% Cu and 22.6% S in weight was oxidized at 1523K by bubbling of Ar + O2 gas through a submerged nozzle. The effects of oxygen partial pressure and flow rate of gas on the oxidation rate of matte were discussed. The desulfurization rate and the evolution rate of SO2 gas of copper matte were significantly influenced by the oxygen partial pressure, but the dependence on gas flow rate was rather complicated. The desulfurization rate and evolution rate of SO2 gas of copper matte were described by the mass transfer rate through the gas film around the rising gas bubbles. Thermodynamic correlation equations between the partial pressure of gaseous species and matte composition were incorporated to the kinetic calculation, The present model shows that the reaction path starts to transiently cross over an isobar line of PSO2 to asymptotically approach to the particular isobar line drawn in a matte composition plane of %S and %O.

A fundamental study was conducted with the purpose of establishing an environmentally sound recovery process for recycling of valuable metals, by combining scraps containing such metals. As an example, direct extraction and recovery of neodymium (Nd) in magnet scraps was investigated by utilizing liquid metal as an extraction medium. It was found that liquid magnesium (Mg) is a suitable extraction medium and can extract Nd from iron alloys with high efficiency at around 1100 K. The newly developed extraction apparatus for Nd is a mechanically simple and static device without moving parts, where the Mg extraction medium circulates due to differences in the temperature inside the reaction vessel. This developed device can simultaneously accomplish continuous extraction of metal Nd from scraps, re-extraction of Mg from Mg-Nd alloy and the eventual recovery of pure Mg. As a result, metal Nd with 98 % purity was directly recovered from magnet scraps under certain conditions. It was also shown that the extraction agent Mg could be reused. The results of this investigation show the possibility of establishing a new process for the direct extraction of Nd in pure metal form without oxidization.

The behavior of arsenopyrite under heating has been studied by many scientists. It has been already established that under heating at more than 650°c and without air access the arsenopyrite dissociates with the formation of one atom arsenic. Under vacuum the dissociation process begins at 5500C with the formation of elemental arsenic. The residue of dissociation process contains pyrrhotite and throilite. In the presence of pyrite, arsenopyrite dissociates under lower temperature and with a higher velocity than without it. The industrial realization of fool scale processing of arsenic bearing raw materials is possible only by the use of standard equipment and oxygen containing blast. In this view the paper presents the results of the study on the effect of oxygen in the gaseous phase and its addition into the charge of pyrite in the process of arsenopyrite decomposition. Thermodynamic analyses showed that under thermal processing of arsenopyrite in the presence of pyrite and limited quantities of oxygen in the gaseous phase the formation of arsenic sulfides is possible according to the following reactions:

In fire refining of copper, the affinities of various impurity elements on dissolved oxygen is of great significance. Further, in the design of oxygen probes in liquid copper, the influence of solute interactions on the activity of oxygen need to be considered in order to evaluate the oxygen concentration in molten copper. The present paper presents a series of measurements of the activities of oxygen in liquid Cu-M-o alloys (where M stands for Mn, Zn, As, Se or Te) carned out by the present group employing the solid electrolyte galvanic cell technique. Extreme care was taken to control the oxygen potentials in the inert gas atmosphere, and to keep the oxygen levels very low in the molten metal. The oxygen content was determined by analysis of the samples taken out from the melt. The results obtained showed that Mn has a strong negative influence on the activity coefficient of oxygen in liquid copper. A similar, but less prominent effect was observed in the case of Zn. Arsenic had no influence on the activity of oxygen in Cu (liq.). Se and Te had slight negative effect on oxygen activities in copper at XQ >10-5, while at lower oxygen levels the interaction coefficients were found to be positive. The results obtained were compared with empirical models for the calculation of interaction coefficients available in literature.
