"To allow various wastes containing high levels of chlorine to be used as alternative raw materials for Portland cement, two practical methods of chlorine removal were developed. In the first method, chlorine is extracted from the wastes during the cement manufacturing process. In the second, ash-dust waste with high chlorine content is first washed and then dehydrated to cake before being introduced to the cement manufacturing process. This cake can be used as an alternative for some cement raw materials. By combining the two methods, various wastes previously considered unsuitable for recycling due to their chlorine content can often now be used in cement manufacturing plants. As such, these methods represent a major contribution to environmental protection as well as a solution to problems relating to the diffusion of heavy metals and dioxins from cement plants.1. IntroductionWaste generation levels have risen rapidly in recent years. in both the consumer and industrial sectors and today, the need for effective, efficient waste management is one of the most pressing and serious problem of today's society.The Japanese cement industry has reacted to the increase in waste generation by using certain materials as alternative raw inputs or fuels for cement production, in an effort to contribute to society and conserve energy resources.These wastes often contain non-negligible levels of chlorine and heavy metals, however, both of which are unsuitable for cement production. Depending on the element content, Heavy metals have a particularly negative effect -on cement quality; in addition, they can be released into the environment. Chlorine, on the other hand, is contained in large amounts in incinerated ash from household wastes as well as in certain plastics. Both substances are considered impediments in cement-production, not only because they reduce the quality of the cement produced but also because they impair operating safety on cement production lines.To address this problem, two practical technologies have been established for separation and recovery of chlorine components during cement pre-processing and production. This paper introduces the application of these technologies with a special focus on incinerated ash from urban wastes, a representative form of waste material having notably high concentrations of chlorine, heavy metals, and dioxins. We also outline the technologies enabling this material to be used as an alternative input to cement production."

This document discusses commercial strategies and applications of specialty processing plants for the recycling of nickel, copper, zinc and cobalt bearing by-products. For this discussion, I will focus on materials originating from the metal plating, electronic circuit board· and chemical industries. The review of select processes and the required service, sourcing, material handling, processing and marketing strategies necessary for a successful recycling program are highlighted. Materials discussed in this summary include filtercakes, filters, dusts, spent catalysts, spent solutions and solids. Both pyrometallurgical and hyrometallurgical applications to these materials are addressed. A comparison of targeted finished markets, including smelter feeds and value added products are also reviewed.

The trend in mining thermal coal is only to mine coal with the lowest sulphur content. In many coal seams, bands of coal with high sulphur content are often present, generally occurring either at the roof or floor level. Methods of selective mining are, therefore, necessary to recover only the low sulphur coal. This paper examines the methods currently in use in mines and the alternative methods that are able or have potential to offer control of shearers and continuous miners where greater thicknesses of coal have to be left in the roof and floor. These alternative methods rely on such characteristics as neutron gamma radiation; electromagnetic waves; vibration; infrared; infrared; optical; pick force; X-ray fluorescence; conductivity; gyroscopes and laser systems.

"The influence 6f gravity on the microstructure of unidirectionally solidified Cu-Pb monotectic, Ag-Si and Fe-C eutectic alloys is studied. In order to examine the influence of gravity in a lg environment, both the upward (opposite to direction of gravity) and downward (direction of gravity) unidirectional solidifications are carried out. The results are as follows: (1) For the upward solidified Ag-Si eutectic alloy, the eutectic Si continuously grows. On the other hand, in the downward solidified Ag-Si alloy, the Si grows discontinuously and disperses into the ex-Ag matrix. (2) No morphological difference in the eutectic growth is observed between the upward and downward solidified Fe-C eutectic alloys. (3) In the case of the upward solidified Cu-Pb monotectic alloy, a banded structure, which consists of Pb-rich layers and Cu-rich layers, is observed. However, such a banded structure -is not observed in the downward specimen. (4) The banded structure is not found in the upward solidified Cu-Pb-0.05 mass % Al and Cu-Pb-0.1 mass % Al alloys. In the Cu-Pb-0.05 mass% Al alloy, a fibrous -L 2 phase grows continuously parallel to the growth direction at low growth rate. Only 500 mass ppm addition of aluminum induces the morphological change of the monotectic L2 phase.IntroductionThe influence of gravity on the solidification of eutectic and monotectic alloys has been investigated in microgravity environments [l-9]. The purpose of these studies was to obtain a homogeneous microstructure of eutectic or monotectic alloys, most of which alloys tend to solidify with macro-segregation under gravity. However, in most of the previous experiments, e.g., in free fall systems, in aircraft or in space laboratories, the growth rate was too high to realize a planar solid/liquid interface. This would be due to the limited time for solidification. Thus, it was difficult to examine the influence of gravity on the planar coupled growth of the eutectic or monotectic alloy. In this study, both the downward U.D.S. (unidirectional solidification by gravity) and upward U.D.S. (opposite direction to gravity) are carried out in order to examine the influence of gravity on the coupled growth in a lg environment [l0, 11]. In the case of the downward U.D.S. using the current Bridgman method, the molten alloy must be confined between the crucible and the solid."

"Effect of moisture content must be fully understood for controlling the granule compaction of ceramics. It changes the mechanical behavior of spray-dried granules applied for compaction process, and governs the structure and properties of .ceramics. To understand the time-dependent change in processing, the kinetics was examined for change of moisture content for granules placed in a die and the pressed compacts also. The results were explained in terms of apparent moisture diffusion coefficients. They varied non-linearly with the PVA content in the granules. The results were explained through the non-uniform PVA distribution in the granules.IntroductionMoisture must be controlled in compaction process to produce the green compacts having uniform structure. It affects glass transition temperature of binder and thus the deformation behavior of powder granules under an applied stress. Several studies [1-7] have clarified the effect of moisture content on the compaction behavior of granules and the structure of resultant compacts for both die pressing and cold isostatic pressing (CIP) of pre-formed compacts. In these studies, the moisture contents in the system were equilibrated with the humidity in the atmosphere before compaction. In practice, however, the moisture content in the system may vary with time if the relative humidity of surrounding atmosphere is different from what the granules were equilibrated previously. This is very likely case in real production processes. However, the kinetics of moisture change in the granules as well as in the pre-formed powder compacts have not been well studied. For controlling the microstructure in a system, it is necessary to fully understand the kinetics of moisture change and its relevance to packing structure of powders."

"High performance Sm2Fe17N3 magnet powder is developed nitriding Sm2Fe17 alloy that 'is made using a reduction and diffusion method. Typical remanence, coercivity and maximum energy product of the fine powder are 1.40 T, 1.13 T and 323 kJ/m3, respectively. Decreasing samarium content, oxygen content and the amount of a-Fe are found to be the important factors to realize high-energy product.High performance injection molded Sm2Fe17N3 anisotropic magnet is also developed using the powder and an original binder system developed in order to mold at low temperature. Typical remanence, coercivity and maximum energy product obtained are 0.77 T, 0.78 T and 103 kJ/m3, respectively in the density of 4.77 Mg/m3The temperature coefficient of remanence is -0.07 %/K and that of coercivity is -0.54.%/K. The initial irreversible flux loss of the magnet that has a permeance of two is -5 % at 100 °C and the irreversible .flux loss of it is -4.4 % exposing it at 80 °C for 1000h.IntroductionSm2Fe17N3 alloy powder is expected to be very useful for a bonded magnet. The reasons are as follows. The magnetization is as large as the Nd2Fe14B alloy. Curie temperature is even higher than the alloy. The uni-axial anisotropy is comparatively higher than the alloy. Consequently it is possible to obtain high coercivity after just milling the powder and therefore possible to obtain high-energy product in a bonded magnet as it is realized in the SmCo5 bonded magnet. On the other hand, sintering is difficult because it will be decomposed into samarium nitride and a-Fe when heating it up to 500°C:"

"Alloys with six different compositions in the system Mg-Ca-Zn were produced by melt spinning. The aging behavior of alloys was investigated by measuring the changes in microhardness after isochronal aging and the microstructure was analyzed by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All six compositions in the as-solidified condition show a difference in microstructure between the wheel contact side (zone A) and the free surface side (zone B) as a result of the differences in the solidification rate across the ribbons. One of the alloys (Mg-l.5wt%Ca-6wt%Zn) was chosen to be more deeply investigated in this work as it exhibited grain boundary films and an age hardening behavior was produced in that alloy.IntroductionMagnesium is the lightest of all the commonly used metals, and very attractive for applications in transportation. It also has a number of other desirable features, including good ductility, better damping characteristics than aluminum, and excellent castability. However, there are some negative features, such as high reactivity in the molten state, inferior fatigue and creep resistance as compared to aluminum, poor corrosion resistance and high production cost.In recent years there has been a significant increase in magnesium use as a structural material. These structural applications include aerospace, automotive and nuclear industries as well as appliances and sporting goods (1 ). According to reports on Mg-Zn alloys, the addition of Zn (2) in magnesium increased strength. Also, since the maximum solubility of Zn in magnesium is 6.2wt%, a considerable amount of Zn can be retained in solid solution in magnesium alloys by rapid solidification. In addition, Ca is known (3) to be one of the most potent alloying elements for refining the microstructure and precipitates in magnesium alloys, and also to improve mechanical strength and corrosion resistance."

Milling circuits are known to be difficult to control. In order to address these difficulties, it was decided to develop and test a model predictive controller (MPC) for a milling circuit. A milling simulator was written using Microsoft Visual C++ and used to design and test the MPC controller. Due to the large number of tuning parameters in a controller of this type, an optimizing algorithm was written that automatically tunes the controller. Good, robust control was obtained when the controller was tuned using this algorithm. Control was further improved by combining feedback and feed forward control and by using quadratic programming in the MPC algorithm. The movement of the manipulated variables was reduced by using a novel technique that allows the controlled variable to vary within a specified region around the set point. An optimiser controller was also successfully implemented to control the circuit at its maximum throughput.

The current methodology to design stope support systems in South African gold and platinum mines is based upon the tributary area concept. The discontinuous nature of the hangingwall rock is not adequately addressed, and mechanisms leading to rock mass failures between adjacent support units are poorly understood. The work reported here aims to formulate a basis for quantifying support mechanisms and gain insights into the influence of rock discontinuities on stable hangingwall spans. Numerical models are used to qualitatively investigate the stress transfer from the support units to the discontinuous hangingwall. Stable hangingwall spans are quantified by considering two failure mechanisms, namely (i) beam buckling, and (ii) shear failure due to slip at the abutments. The output of the proposed design methodology is appropriate site specific support spacing, based on discontinuity spacing and orientation. The method is particularly suited to mines at intermediate and great depth, where typically the hangingwall is highly discontinuous due to face parallel mining induced fractures. Results of parametric studies show that with increasing in situ compressive hangingwall stress, beam thickness and friction angle, hangingwall stability is increased, leading to wider stable hangingwall spans between adjacent support units.

Sulfidic zinc concentrates are usually roasted in a fluidized bed furnace into sulfur-free oxide form. Metallic zinc is produced from this oxidic calcine using hydrometallurgical leaching, solution purification and electrowinning stages. The roasting step is necessary because zinc oxides are easier to dissolve using traditional leaching methods than zinc sulfides. The Kokkola Zinc smelter uses various types of zinc concentrates and secondary materials as feed mixture. This makes it difficult to find optimum process parameters for the roaster when the composition and particle size distribution of the feed mixture varies even on a daily basis. Certain conditions may even cause difficult accretion problems or increase the amount of calcine in the process off-gas line excessively. A thermochemical heat and material balance model was developed for process advisor, in order to estimate the effects of different process parameters (temperature, process air coefficient, concentrate feed, oxygen enrichment, water feed, etc.) on the heat balance, roasting temperature and calcine composition. This model was constructed using the heat balance module of HSC Chemistry 4.0 software. The prevailing chemical compounds in the concentrate and calcine were verified using mineralogical analyses and equilibrium calculations. The roasting process seems to operate near chemical equilibrium conditions, if the behavior of the main components is considered. This paper describes briefly the basic principles of the calculation model and outlines the results with several diagrams and discussion. The calculated results were in reasonable agreement with the recent process air oxygen enrichment and water feed test campaigns carried out at Kokkola in 1999.

This study examined the potential of mixing rotary kiln fines (RK fines), a waste product generated when limestone is converted to lime (CaO), with acid producing mine waste to provide 1) short-term mitigation by neutralizing acid produced by iron sulfide oxidation and 2) long-term mitigation by facilitating the passivation of iron sulfide mineral surfaces. Five loadings of RK fines were mixed with 75 g of Duluth Complex rock to produce neutralization potential (NP) added: acid potential (AP) quotients of 0,0.11,0.22,0.66 and 1.1. The mixtures were subjected to wet-dry cycling laboratory testing for 585 weeks. The rock alone produced acidic drainage, with pH decreasing below 4 after about 20 weeks of reaction and ultimately reaching the approximate range of 3.3 to 3.5; sulfate release did not decrease over time. The RK fines elevated pH and inhibited sulfate release for time periods which increased with the mass of RK fines present. The pH of drainage from the 0.11 quotient (NP added1AP) loading decreased below 6.0 after 75 weeks of dissolution and decreased to 3.6 after 117 weeks, at which time the reactor was terminated. The duplicate 0.22 quotient loadings of RK fines decreased below 6.0 after 95 and 170 weeks. The former was terminated after 117 weeks, and the latter reached a minimum pH of 2.8 after 512 weeks. Drainage pH from the 0.66 quotient decreased below 6 after 581 weeks. For the drainages which acidified, the cumulative calcium release prior to pH decreasing below 6.0 was 92 to 103 percent of that initially present as calcium carbonateloxide in the RK fines. The pH of drainage from the 1.1 quotient typically remained above 8.0 throughout the period of record. Sulfate concentrations in the drainages decreased while the neutralizing fraction of the RK fines was present, but increased after this fraction was depleted.

BHP Diamonds Inc. is part of the BHP World Minerals Division ofBHP Minerals. The project is a joint venture between manager and operator BHP (51%) and the Blackwater Group (49%). The Blackwater Group comprises Dia Met Minerals Limited, Charles Fipke and Stewart Blusson.Production at the NWT diamonds project began in October with the mine officially opened October 14, 1998. The project is situated on an 853 000 acre claim block located in the Lac de Gras region of the NWT. It is about 300 km northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km south of the Arctic Circle. The seasonal winter ice road to the Echo Bay Lupin mine passes along the eastern margin of the project area. This allows road access each year from mid-January to mid-April. For the remainder of the year, the project is accessible only by air.HistoryIn 1980, Charles Fipke traced indicator minerals east from the Mackenzie River area. He discovered indicator minerals in the Lac de Gras area and staked mineral claims in 1989. A joint venture was formed between BHP and Dia Met in 1990, and in 1991, the first diamonds in the NWT were discovered at Point Lake by BHP and Dia Met. This initiated the largest staking rush in Canadian history. "The nonferrous production industry has gone through a remarkable transformation in recent years in terms of developing and adopting new technologies. Technology innovations have largely been driven by the need for greatly improved environmental protection in addition to increased productivity. One of the most notable aspects of the new technologies is their ability to reduce the emission of sulfur and other pollutants to extremely low levels.The current industry trends towards more environmentally friendly technologies are bringing about additional benefits of developing more efficient, technically advanced, and continuous processes in closed reactor vessels. Key aspects of these modem trends include the use of increased oxygen enrichment in the process gas, better process control, reduced manpower requirements, and plant operations with more skilled personnel.Computer simulation and modeling of complex processes have become more reliable, realistic, and thus increasingly useful in metal production. Some of the notable examples are reviewed.Finally, the need and advantages for value-added production in the nonferrous industry are discussed.I. IntroductionMost recently commissioned technologies for nonferrous metals production have been developed largely in response to environmental concerns. One of the most remarkable improvements made by the nonferrous industry in the last decade has been the rapid increase in sulfur capture. Before the start of the last decade, 90% capture of sulfur was considered good. Since then, strict emission regulations have become the norm in advanced societies, although smelters in many parts of the world still operate with limited pollution control. Other emissions and discharges have also been substantially reduced, resulting in much improved working conditions and worker hygiene in addition to the overall environmental protection. The development of the more environmentally friendly technologies has accompanied other advantageous advances made in the nonferrous industry, i.e., the trend towards more gas-tight, continuous processes and larger plants. This has increased the competitive edge enjoyed by the industry in the industrial countries, offsetting the higher costs of labor and pollution abatement that they have to overcome in those countries. Experience has shown that clean technology often leads to a profitable business, because its adoption forces the concomitant advancement of related technologies in addition to the avoidance of penalties imposed by the public on pollution-prone industries. Needless to say, there are other driving forces for new technologies such as reduction of operating and capital costs, improved product quality, and energy considerations in terms of reduced consumption and utilization of readily available sources."

"The effect of various operating conditions on splashing behavior in a Peirce-Smith converter has been investigated with a 1/5.7 scale cold model. Dynamic similarity between the model and a commercial converter was attained by setting the modified Froude number in the model experiments in· the range for normal converter operation. It is known that for a given modified Froude number the dimensionless penetration length of gas into the liquid phase increases as the liquid density decreases. Moreover, penetration· length has a large effect on splashing behavior. Therefore, a heavy liquid, a mixture of water and lead concentrate was used as the liquid phase. It was concluded that the amount of splash dramatically decreases with a reduction in the buoyancy energy per, unit liquid mass and an increase in the horizontal distance between the tuyere tip and the edge of the mouth.IntroductionSubmerged gas injection is widely used in practice in ferrous and nonferrous pyrometallurgical operations to achieve large gas-liquid contact areas and good agitation of liquid for rapid chemical reaction. The common application in ·nonferrous industry is the Peirce-Smith converter with multi-tuyere for copper and nickel matte converting. This process has been used for over 100 years because of its effectiveness in mixing of the molten bath, as well as its merits of the engineering simplicity. However, the mechanisms which · determine the blowing performance is poorly understood, and the design and operating conditions of the Peirce-Smith converter varies widely from plant to plant, such as by diameter, length, mouth angle, tuyere position and level of molten matte. Smelters have continuously made an effort to increase converter productivity, implying maximum tuyere blowing rate. Above a certain critical blowing rate, splash of molten matte from the converter mouth becomes unacceptable because of dangerous ejection and accretion buildup around the converter mouth, which results in interference with effective hood sealing. In fact, a 1993 converter survey[!] reported that splash was a major limiting factor for blowing rate and 54% of responding plants from around the world regard it as a limiting condition[2]. In order to increase tuyere blowing rate a study of the effect of various operating conditions on splashing behavior is expected."

Waste rock and tailings from a proposed nickel-copper mine were evaluated extensively for potential on-land and under water disposal. Standard humidity cell and column tests were conducted over a two year period and underwater tests were conducted for more than one year. Nickel concentrations or release rates from the waste were consistent with nickel to sulphur ratios in the solids. This relationship provided a tool to assess the risk of metal leaching in wastes using nickel and sulphide assays. Nickel release and mobilization was found to occur for both oxidizing leach tests and under water tests even when pH values exceeded 7.0. Geochemical model calculations showed that iron oxyhydroxide solids can scavenge nickel from leachate and that the nickel inventory can be released from solids at relatively lower, but neutral pH values.

Lead anodes used in zinc electrowinning generally contain 0.5 - 1.0 % silver to reduce the rate of corrosion over the service life. For good quality zinc, the cathodes must contain less than 10 ppm lead. In order to reduce the lead contamination of the cathode, the lead anode must become coated with a protective layer of Pb02/Mn02. The formation of this layer may take as long as 30 - 60 days, during which time zinc production is substantially reduced and the cathodes are contaminated with lead. To improve the mechanical properties of Pb-Ag-anodes alloying elements such as calcium, strontium, barium and others are added. The production of cast lead-silver or lead-silver-calcium anodes often results in the formation of numerous holes, voids or laps in the anode surface that can initiate localized internal corrosion. Based on the experience as the major supplier of rolled anodes for copper electrowinning, RSR Technologies has developed an improved anode for zinc electrowinning. The anode consists of a rolled Pb- Ag-Ca-alloy with a controlled surface grain structure. It forms an adherent protective oxide coating within 2 - 3 days when placed in an electrowinning cell. The preferred calcium and silver contents of the alloy are 0.03 - 0.08 % and 0.3 - 0.4%, respectively. Rolling sheets significantly reduces the presence of internal porosity or laps. The lack of defects results in long anode life. The rolling also produces a uniform grain structure to which the corrosion product readily adheres, thus significantly reducing the conditioning period.

"The level of scientific knowledge about the effects of contaminants is increasing and changes in environmental monitoring are likely to allow for the assessment of environment effects particularly to the aquatic environment. This paper provides an overview of recent developments in this area which include the environmental effects monitoring program for pulp and paper operations, the assessment of the Aquatic Effects of Mining (AQUAMIN) program, the Aquatic Effects Technology Evaluation (AETE) program, and the review of the federal Metal Mining Liquid Effluent Regulations (MMLER). The paper also provides a look forward at the direction of environmental monitoring of mine projects in Canada. IntroductionEnvironmental monitoring programs provide a wide range of data to environmental management systems, regulatory authorities, and stakeholders. The data obtained are used to demonstrate that operations are in compliance with regulatory environmental protection requirements, and provide the scientific basis for assessing the effectiveness of environmental protection measures. Environmental monitoring requirements for mine projects are established based on the type of operation, site specific issues and concerns, and the requirements of regulators and mine proponents.The level of scientific knowledge regarding the potential effects of contaminants on the receiving environment is increasing, and in particular with regards to the receiving aquatic environment. Regulatory controls regarding the protection of fish, fish habitat, and fishery resources are being reviewed with regards to their adequacy, and the environmental effects monitoring program on the pulp and paper industry is expected to provide useful data relevant to those types of operations. These developments are of interest to mine proponents as it is presently expected that an environment effects monitoring program will be developed specifically for the metal mining industry under a regulated environmental effects monitoring program as part of the Fisheries Act. This paper reviews recent developments in this area, and provides a look forward on the future directions of environmental monitoring programs."

Copper is one of the trace minerals essential to life. It is added, usually in the form of copper sulfate, to virtually all formulated feedstuffs and to dietary supplements fed to animals on forage. Over the past five years, an improved inorganic copper source trademarked Micronutrients TBCC™, has been developed, tested and commercially introduced. TBCC is a crystalline form of basic copper chloride. Synthesis is accomplished in a continuous neutralization I crystallization process. In current commercial production, the primary sources of copper currently used as feedstocks are the etching solutions used to manufacture electronic printed wiring boards. These solutions have traditionally been managed as hazardous wastes, but their use to manufacture TBCC™ exempts them from regulation as wastes under the "Use/Reuse" provisions of RCRA. "Mining with blast holes drilled upwards may be done to recover sill pillars, or for economic reasons when the distance between the levels is relatively large. If the rock is sufficiently competent to accommodate large stope size, the distance between sublevels could be increased to as much as drilling accuracy allows. The same drill drift can be used for the drilling of both down holes and up holes. In the case of down holes, the initial opening of the stope (drop raise) is not as much a problem as for the inverse drop raise for mining with up holes. This is because, with a drop raise, a lot of space is available at the toe for the blasted rock to expand. In addition, the raise can be blasted in many shots, thus allowing smaller blasts each time. Inverse drop raises are generally much more difficult to blast because of the limited space for muck flow, and must, therefore, be taken down in a single blast, requiring special considerations in order to ensure a success. A case study of a 29 m (95 ft) inverse drop raise successfully blasted in a single shot at Heath Steele Mines is described. The paper covers technical considerations such as drilling accuracy, hole deviation survey, delay extension and protection, initiation methods and initiation sequence. Finally, a novel method for creating the initial opening called ’slot drilling’ is presented. This method, inspired from LKAB in Sweden, consists of drilling a row of interconnected holes using a special guide mounted on a regular production drill hammer.With a case study of blasting an inverse drop raise of 29 m (95 ft) in one blast, this paper further discusses some technical issues that are critical for the development of inverse drop raises. A novel method for creating the initial opening with a slot of interconnected holes is also presented with the experience acquired at different mine sites across the Noranda group."

"LocationThe Gibraltar mine is located in central British Columbia (NTS 93B/9W), 362 km north of Vancouver. Access is provided by 20 km of paved road from McLeese Lake, which lies 45 km north of Williams Lake on Highway 97. Latitude and longitude of the mine are 52° 30' and 122° 16', respectively.The total area of the McLeese Lake site is approximately 1700 ha (4200 acres). This includes the orebodies, dumps, surface drainage collection system, plant site, roads and tailings ponds.Brief Description of OperationOre is mined by open pit methods and is concentrated using conventional crushing, grinding and flotation processes. Copper and molybdenum flotation occurs at an average rate of 40 000 tons per day. Tailing is discharged to an impoundment area and the water recycled as process water. Additional copper is extracted from the waste dumps using sulphuric acid as a leach solution followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning.HistoryExploration by Gibraltar began in 1964, continuing until late 1970, at which time it was announced that the property would go into production. Construction started in early 1971, with initial production in March 1972. Target capacity of 30 000 tons per day was achieved by the end of March and is currently at 40 000 tons per day.Ore reserves as of January 1, 1998 were 184 384 000 tons grading 0.31% Cu and 0.010% MoS2."
