A mathematical model has been developed to study the influence of process variables on the horizontal Ohno continuous casting process. The model simulates the heat transfer and fluid flow in a wide plate ingot of pure tin. A two dimensional numerical analysis based on a control-volume finite difference approach, the Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equations algorithm (SIMPLER), and an Enthalpy Transforming Model was used. The shape and position of the solid-liquid interface were calculated at different casting speeds, ingot thicknesses, and cooling device characteristics, as well as various mould temperatures. Crystalline silica (quartz, cristobalite, and tridyrnite) is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) because of its potential for causing debilitating but nonmalignant lung diseases. In 1987, the International Agency for Research Against Cancer (IARC) conducted a review of the health literature and concluded that crystalline silica was a probable human carcinogen. As a result of this finding, OSHA was required to regulate crystalline silica under its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). The standard requires that all materials handled by OSHA-regulated facilities be labeled according to the requirements of RCS and that workers receive proper training on the handling of the material if the crystalline silica content equals or exceeds 0.1 weight percent (0.1 %). MSHA currently is considering enacting its own RCS. This will be similar to OSHA's RCS. If the standard is enacted, most mineral producers will have to determine the respirable monitor filter and bulk crystalline silica contents of their ores and products so that workers and/or customers will know whether they are in compliance with the 0.1% HCS and/or the OSHA permissible exposure level (PEL) of 50 µg for an 8-hour workday for respirable crystalline silica as determined from monitor samples. Two major concerns with the RCS are the widespread occurrence of crystalline silica in nature and the suitability of current technology for routinely determining crystalline silica concentrations at the 0.1 % RCS level. Most ores are extracted from silica-bearing deposits and it is a common constituent of rocks and soils. OSHA's RCS will have the greatest impact on the producers of crushed stone, diatomite, dimension stone, gravel, industrial sand, perlite, pumice, pyrophyllite, sand, and talc because these materials frequently are shipped directly from the mill to the customer. MSHA's RCS would affect nearly all mineral producers. Those producers that have crystalline silica present in concentrations near the 0.1 % cutoff point will have the most difficulty with the analysis. Crystalline silica can be quantified at the 0.1 % level by X-ray diffractometry in simple systems containing one, two, and possibly three minerals if (1) none of the accessory minerals has X-ray diffraction reflections that coincide or overlap with those of crystalline silica and (2) the standard has a particle size distribution and crystallinity similar to those of the sample. In some instances, it may not be possible to determine the crystalline silica content of a sample with any degree of certainty using the recommended regulatory protocol. In all cases, it is recommended that a qualified mineralogist identify the minerals in a sample prior to any regulatory analysis. Additionally, the uncertainty as to whether some silica polymorphs should be classified as crystalline or noncrystalline and the suitability of metastable high-temperature standards, such as cristobalite and tridyrnite, for regulatory analysis at ambient temperatures should be addressed further. This overview is written both to highlight these problems and to serve as a guide for analysts, regulators, and industry personnel who are involved in the crystalline silica issue. It also covers some of the difficulties and/or shortcomings in quantifying crystalline silica, such as the ubiquitous mineral quartz, in the workplace.

The modem copper smelter today utilizes tonnage oxygen for smelting concentrates, generating a high strength S02 off-gas leaving the smelter vessel. This gas stream, which also contains any unreacted oxygen, plus C02, N2 and H20, also carries with it the volatilized portion of heavy metals in the feed, plus partly oxidized sulfide concentrates. The time/temperature history and subsequent treatment of this off-gas stream emerging from the smelting furnace exit up to the acid plant can influence the partitioning and segregation of heavy metals in the off-gas circuit. Depending on this history, the type and characteristics of the chemical and physical reactions which. occur in the gas handling system can be influenced. This fact can also be used as a tool to adjust the separation of copper from heavy metals. In this paper, the impact of different time/temperature histories of the gas, due to different furnace geometries .and design, on the subsequent formation and characteristics of the smelter dust is examined. Based on the available data, several case histories drawn from examples using both bath and flash smelting technologies are analyzed from this perspective.

The following is a discussion of a new approach to safety when developing or applying a new mining technology. In the form of an engineering process, the following approach had its inception in the military and aviation industries and is also very strongly evident in the chemical industry.The process has been developed and applied in the mining industry by the author. It is called 'Incremental Development and Management of New Technology'.The process is a composite of carefully selected System Safety Management, System Engineering and Financial techniques and methods. It consists of modules which can be modified to suit the requirements of a specific project. Modules provide an organised framework of activities to facilitate a gradual acquisition of pertinent knowledge and information and to enable progressive evaluation or verification of produced outcomes against specified requirements.

The development of variousworks on automatising of operational processes at coal¬extractive and coal-mining enterprises introduces an ever growing necessity to carry out investigations in the wide range of problems concerning the possibitity of joint functioning of different levels, which seems impossible without the use of integrated systems of passing on and prossessing the information on the basis of modern calculating machines and other means of automation. This view on the problem of automation of the enterprise operation presupposes that the structure of automated operational dispatcher control (AODC) should be very closely connected with that of integrated data processing system! In this case the AODC structure from the point of view of automation of its functions (or operations), i.e. from the point of view of informational techniques coinsides in general with the structure of dispersed information and calculating network (ICN), realizing the passing on and processing of the information as well as solving the functional tasks on the basis of local calculating networks of electrical calculating machines with correspond to different levels of AODC and located with regard to productional hierarchy of operational dispatcher control (ODC). In this approach however the use of dispersed, ICN gives opportunity to. realize the possibility of action only with realisation on the CM of algorithmic' task of ODC, when a dispatcher 'is the lastto make a final decision.. At the mining enterprises it's rather difficult for a dispatcher to make a final decision because of the great variaty of productional situations, the presence of contradictions and a number of other subjective factors which often lead to the dispatcher's mistaks causing great material losses of the enterprise. Hence the necessity arises to automize and formalize making a decision and including the expert systems (ES) into the ontour of AODC, which enables the dispatcher 2to get a neeessary advice in different situations, especially in case ofemergency on the basis of establishing the mechanism of logical layout of non-formalized data base (DB) procedures relying upon the background knowledge and experience of experts. The presently presented in this paper theory of establishing the. ISAODC on the basis of dispersed ICN and expert systems is aimed at trasformation ofoperational' tasks of the higher level into the technological ones, at solving the tasks of diagnostics and forseeing of the process of production, with a dispatcher getting an opportunity of making qualitative and effective decision concerrning the choice of operational impacts in actual time on the basis of generalization the realisation of presented conception must, as has been already mentioned, be accomplished only on the basis of the foundatoin of the united dispersed informational - calculating network of electrical calculating machines.. This includes ICN which would be operating in . different operational contours. . From what has just been said it followsthat the ISAODC Structure will conside with that of DICN (in our case) and hence all the problems of ISAODC structure would be regarded as the questions of DICN.

This paper describes the results of using shear flocculation and flotation known as aggregative flotation technique for the enrichment of coal-derived char produced from mild gasification process. Aggregative flotation is a separation process which involves the use of suitable aggregating liquid under the action of high shear forces to render hydrophobic surface of coal-derived char particles to aggregate in an aqueous slurry. The fine carbonaceous particles are aggregated into larger floes while the impurities remain hydrophilic. In subsequent flotation process, the char aggregates are then separated from mineral matters by aeration in the flotation cell. The floatability of char aggregates and removal of mineral matters from chars are studied in a lab scale flotation column cell. The effect of various operating parameters on the aggregative flotation responses is presented. Emulsification of aggregating liquid using high intensity agitation and ultrasonic energy provides excellent aggregating liquid dispersion and increases selectivity for char aggregation. In subsequent flotation process, it results in significantly increasing the flotation rate of char aggregates. The microscopic examinations of bubble attachment to coal-derived char particles under various aggregating liquid dispersion levels were conducted by induction time measurement. The distributions of hydrophobicity of char particles and char aggregates prepared under various aggregating liquid dispersion techniques were measured by film flotation. The char particles prepared under high intensity emulsification attach at significantly faster rates to air bubble and with lower mean critical wetting surface tension than that of char with direct aggregating liquid addition. An interrelationship of increasing in flotation rate/combustible recovery with decreasing in induction time, mean critical wetting surface tension and dispersion of hydrophobicity on the char particles and char aggregates were obtained.

Traditionally, many of the advances in casting technology have been made by expensive and time consuming trial-and-error methodology. Modeling of the complex solidification process promises production of castings which are made "right the first time." Even though several models are available for simulation of conventional casting processes, none of them address this relatively new technology of investment cast titanium aluminides. In this paper, modification and application of a transient, three-dimensional, fully coupled fluid flow and heat transfer solidification modeling computer program to the analysis of centrifugally cast titanium aluminides is discussed. The predictive results of the program are compared to qualities of actual cast parts for validation.

Compressed air energy storage (CAES) uses low cost off-peak energy to compress air and pump it into pressurised underground storage. Expanding the air through a modified form of gas turbine generates electrical energy when required. While generating power, a CAES station consumes approximately one-third of the gas required for the equivalent installed capacity of a conventional gas turbine. Air can be stored in underground rock caverns, caverns in salt domes, or in aquifers. Existing CAES power stations use caverns mined out of salt domes. Aquifer storage for CAES has been proposed, but not yet implemented. The groundwater in the aquifer would be displaced during air injection and when required the air would be extracted using the natural hydro-static pressure. Victoria has no salt domes, but has aquifers onshore in the Gippsland Basin with geological dome structures of suitable depth, discovery pressure, porosity, permeability and caprock for CAES development. Field tests costing several million dollars would be required to prove the suitability. The most suitable aquifer is near Seaspray, where several dome structures exist. The aquifer, comprising of coarse sands capped by coal and mudstone, is some 600 metres deep with a hydrostatic pressure of 6.3 MPa. Computer simulation of injection and extraction of air from the aquifer under various combinations of horizontal and vertical wells, permeability and tubing head pressures indicated the largest aquifer structure had the capacity to sustain a 300 MW station. A well field comprising of 24 directionally driven wells with a horizontal exposure to the aquifer would achieve the air flow rates required. Using plant similar to that recently installed at McIntosh Alabama USA, would mean high capital costs compared to standard gas turbine plant. However, a review of modem gas turbines indicated that they could be easily and economically adaptated to CAES duty. Adapting a 120 MW gas turbine would give 344 MW output. A separate air compression plant would be used. Economic evaluations indicate that, for gas prices above $1.95 per GJ, a 344 MW CAES plant is more economic for intermediate/reserve load duty than simple cycle gas turbines.

Construction work on one of the world's largest landslide stabilisation projects is drawing to a close in Central Otago. Begun in mid 1990, major stabilisation work has been carried out on seven large rockslides which will be partially inundated when the Clyde dam reservoir (Lake Dunstan) is filled. The work has required the construction of 14.5 kilometres of tunnel, 60 kilometres of surface drilling, 78 kilometres of drilled drainage holes and five million cubic metres of earthworks. The stabilisation programme has been carried out by the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand as part of the Clyde Power Project, a hydroelectric development on the Clutha River.

The territory of Czechoslovakia is well endowed in deposits of a variety of industrial minerals. At present, 29 different types of industrial minerals are mined from some 600 individual deposits in Bohemia and Moravia only. About half of those production centres involves structural materials like aggregate and common brick clays and loams. A significant proportion of industrial minerals produced in Czechoslovakia are exported. Destinations of main products are shown in Figure 1. Production of industrial minerals in Czechoslovakia has a long history. Glass has been produced since the 14th century, sulphuric acid since 1578, graphite since 1750, and chinaware since 1790, to name just a few; but most of the present production comes from deposits developed during the past forty years. For a variety of reasons, only about 30 per cent of registered and explored industrial minerals deposits in the country are in production (Table 1). Two of the reasons may be the complexity of processing or conflicting interests of parties involved, but lack of market research, investment funds, or processing capacity have also had an impact on the level of utilization of the resource base.

The coal-bearing strata of Oklahoma occur in the eastern part of the state over an area of 14,500 square miles, 20.7 percent of the state's total area. Commercially valuable deposits of bituminous coal cover about 8,000 square miles in seams ranging from ten inches to five feet thick. Estimated reserves in Oklahoma are 1.6 billion tons, representing 0.3 percent of U.S. coal reserves. The vast majority of coal mined in Oklahoma used in a single power plant within the state. Oklahoma gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved January 19, 1981. Authority for the state to administer the Abandoned Mine Land program was granted January21,1982. On April 30,1984, the Office of Surface Mining substituted direct federal enforcement of the inspection and enforcement portions of the Oklahoma program. This substituted enforcement was based upon a finding by OSM that Oklahoma had not operated the inspection and enforcement portions of its program effectively. As of January 1, 1986, Oklahoma inspection and enforcement authority was reinstated. Full program authority was granted to Oklahoma on January 14, 1986.

Sulfuric acid anodizing process is extensively used in many industrial and consumer products to provide corrosion resistance to aluminum alloys. The anodic coatings produced consist of amorphous alhnum oxide with a pornus structure which is easily sealed and colored with dyes. The coatings may contain defects due to surface flaws, canposition and microstructure of the aluminum alloy, and/or due to the anodizing process conditions. This paper will describe the techniques used in anodizing process, various defects which may be produced in anodic coatings and the methods to control them.

Experiments were done to determine if a mushroom compost-based sulfate reduction system could be used to treat nickel-contaminated mine waters. Sulfate reduction systems were established in columns containing acid-washed mushroom compost. Simulated mine waters containing 2000 mg/L sulfate and 50 to 1000 mg/L nickel were adjusted to pH 4.5 and pumped through the columns at flow rates between 15 and 25 mL/hr. During the first nine days of operation, virtually all influent nickel was removed in the columns by sorption and ion exchange mechanisms. The nickel removal rate then dropped to 18 to 30 mg Ni/day (7.8 to 12.8 nmol/ g-substrate/day), probably due to low sulfate reduction rates. When sodium lactate was added to the inflow, a sustained and seven-fold increase in the nickel removal rate was observed. Bacterial sulfate reduction rates measured in mushroom compost-based wetlands exposed to coal mine drainage are 2 to 20 times faster than the rates observed in this study. Low sulfate reduction rates in the columns may have been due to the inhibition of microbial activity by high nickel concentrations and the removal of labile organic compounds from the mushroom compost substrate during acid-washing. Results of this study indicate that bacterial sulfate reduction can effectively treat nickel concentrations up to 500 mg/L if labile carbon is nonlimiting.

In the fall of 1988 it became evident that the accuracy of sulfur forecasts for Monterey Coal's No.1 Mine needed to be improved. In addition, it became necessary to predict if any individual train shipments during a month would exceed a contract sulfur limit. The challenge was to develop a forecasting process that would take into account the variability of the coal in the ground as well as the difference between laboratory and preparation plant sulfur reduction efficiency, and the effects of mining coal with multiple units. This paper describes how geostatistics and simulation techniques were used to meet this challenge.

"The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. La catégorie actuelle des réserves possibles sera remplacée par celle des ""minéralisations inférées"". Plusieurs essais démontrent que le système propose, qui s'inspire du Code australasien, peut facilement et rapidement s'intégrer dans les pratiques de l'industrie. II pourrait également contribuer à une standardisation des méthodes et des nomenclatures à l'échelle internationale. La proposition d'utiliser les marges d'erreur des estimes au niveau de confiance de90%pour caractériser les estimations se situe dans une plus longue perspective. Cette application demandera des développement méthodologiques additionnels ainsi qu'une période de rodage."

Early Proterozoic ore deposits in the Verde district at Jerome, Arizona have produced 33.7 million metric tons of ore (1893-1975). The United Verde and United Verde Extension deposits produced most of the ore that yielded 1,644,323,100 kg Cu plus large amounts of Au, Ag, and Zn. These deposits are situated on the fractured and hydrothermally altered apex of a large submarine rhyolitic extrusive (Cleopatra formation). Precambrian lithologies are penetratively deformed and at Jerome the Fl folds plunge steep to the NNW. For the past two decades the volcanogenic model has superseded the replacement theory of ore formation.

In many ways, conveyors are the lifeline of mining and processing operations. Like arteries in the human body, they continuously supply materials to and carry finished products and waste away from vital on-going operations. And like arteries, when the conveyors are running with less than maximum efficiency and productivity, it spells serious trouble for the operation's overall health. Inefficient conveyors suffer carryback, leading to the build-up of materials on idlers and other expensive components. They spill and leak material at loading zones and conveyor transfer points, causing accumulations that can damage the belt, wear moving components, and increase both clean-up labor and maintenance expense. They wander or mistrack, spilling material and endangering personnel and conveyor components including the belt itself. And through these inefficiencies, they multiply the operation's hidden costs. These added expenses are created in lost production, increased downtime for service and maintenance, and the cost of the replacement of prematurely worn equipment. In addition, the attitude that inefficiency is "good enough" is recognized elsewhere in the organization; as a result, other departments relax or operate at less than peak performance. Quality goes down and with it employee morale.

A major limitation in developing successful selective flocculation schemes is the difficulty encountered in adsorbing the polymeric flocculant only on the desired substrate. In this paper a correlation between selectivity of flocculant adsorption and separation efficiency is outlined and a potential technique to achieve selective adsorption of flocculants is discussed.
