The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated germanium and gallium extraction from an ore containing 0.089% Ge and 0.036% Ga. While previous researchers concluded that a reducing agent such as 502 is needed to extract germanium and gallium from such ore, this research showed that high extractions (87% Ge, 97% Ga) were possible using sulfuric acid alone, if the acid concentration were properly controlled. This control was achieved using a two-stage counter-current leach circuit. Microprobe analyses revealed that the non-extracted germanium is in solid solution with quartz, and therefore cannot be leached with 502 or sulfuric acid.

The gold ores in the Jerritt Canyon district have been recognized as refractory since they were first encountered by FMC geologists in 1976. Upon obtaining managing rights as joint venture partner, Freeport McMoRan Inc. developed an operating plan featuring carbon-in-leach gold recovery techniques for the oxide portion of the ores and a patented sulphide oxidation step followed by chlorination for treating the organic carbon constituents of the refractory ores prior to CIL gold recovery. The plant was successfully started up in 1981 with the first gold poured on July 4, 1981. Initial plant throughput was designed to be 2495 MTPD (2750 STPD) total through the dual processing trains.

Detailed measurements made at a test section adjacent to a deep braced cut and other published data are combined to illustrate the limitations of the common methods of predicting movements associated with excavations in soft to medium clay. While past performance data can be used to estimate expected responses before construction in many cases, actual wall and soil deformations throughout construction can only be estimated using finite element procedures. Success of such analyses depends equally upon considering all aspects of construction that induce strains in adjacent soil, such as wall installation, excavation and bracing sequence, and time, and adequately modeling soil stress-strain behavior. Even when these two criteria are met, soil deformations can not be predicted adequately when strain levels exceed those that produce peak shear stress.

Concentrations of minerals between 3.5 and 5 specific gravity such as ilmenite, rutile and zircon in large accumulations of sand constitute "heavy mineral" placers. Two fundamentally different modes of formation characterize "trap" and "bed" placer variants. Smaller and generally higher grade trap placers form during sediment erosion or reworking. Because of their smaller size, they rarely yield economic heavy mineral deposits. They become economic, either if they contain more valuable "heavies" such as gold, or, if they occur within or near much larger but lower grade bed placers. Bed placers form during sediment accumulation episodes in any environment and lithofacies where mineral supply and fluid dynamics are favorable. Three heavy mineral deposits are discussed to illustrate bed placer geology and how trap placers occur with and relate to them.

COAL CHARACARISTICS AND PREPREPARATION REQUIREMENTS Preparation and Market Specifications The national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) established by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1977 require that when coal is burned, the environmental degradation should be a minimum. For this reason, even coal containing low ash and sulfur must be used in compliance with the NAAQS. The most important pollutants resulting from the combustion of coal are ash, SO2, and NOx gases, and the particulate matter escaping with the combustion gases. The ash is the residue left after complete combustion of coal. It results from the inorganic mineral matter existing in the coal before it is burned. The SO2 results from the combustion of inorganic and organic sulfur associated with the coal. The inorganic sulfur may occur as pyrite, marcasite, or as sulfate sulfur of mostly iron and calcium. The authorities disagree in the definition of organic sulfur in the coal. However, according to ASTM Standard D2492-77,1 the organic sulfur is that sulfur occurring in the coal after subtracting the sum of pyrite and sulfatic sulfurs from the total sulfur in the coal. The NOx gases are produced from high temperature oxidation of nitrogen in the coal that is released into the atmosphere. The particulate matter may consist of fly ash and unburned coal. Selective Mining The cleaning of coal from included ash and sulfur-bearing materials should start at the working faces of surface or underground mines. This can be done by (1) mining only those seams which meet certain quality standards, (2) not mining sections of the seams which may cause deterioration in overall quality of the mined coal, and (3) using a mining method that allows selective mining of coal areas or horizons either underground or on the surface. Since these steps improve the coal quality before the coal reaches the preparation plant, they can be considered to constitute precleaning of coal. During the exploration and development stage of a mine, core and channel samples taken from the coal seam are used to determine (1) petrographic analysis and physical properties,2 (2) character of roof and floor of the seam, 3,4 (3) character and quality of impurities,5 (4) proximate and ultimate analysis, and (5) washability characteristics. However, all of these parameters are subject to considerable variation even within the same seam during the advance of the coal face. This creates a problem in meeting the market demand for coal quality if the coal is to be shipped directly from the mine. If the mining operation is large enough, special blending silos or mechanical blending systems may have to be used to provide uniform quality to the market. It has been suggested that radicals on the surface of dust particles are key chemical factors in the pathophysiology which results from the occupational inhalation of coal and silica dust. In addition, oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (eicosanoids) have been implicated as important biochemical mediators of mineral dust-induced lung disease through their role in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, inflammation, and fibrosis. Therefore, we assessed eicosanoid production by the rat alveolar macrophage (AM) exposed in vitro to mineral dusts with varying surface chemical characteristics in order to determine if radicals associated with the mineral dub1 could influence the production of pro-inflammatory mediators in the lung environment. Rat AM were exposed to freshly fractured or "stale" bituminous coal dust, as well as untreated silica or silica calcined to 500°C and 1100°C. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and thromboxane B2 (TxB2) levels in incubation medium were determined by specific radioimmunoassay. When AM were exposed to freshly fractured coal dust, PGE2 and TxB2 production were markedly increased. In contrast, exposure of AM to "stale" dust significantly reduced PGE2 and TxB2 production. In vitro exposure of AM to untreated silica resulted in a significant increase in PGE2 and TxB2 production compared to control. However, exposure of AM to silica calcined to 1100°C resulted in eicosanoid levels which were not significantly different from control. These findings suggest that radicals associated with respirable coal and silica particles may play a key role in the ability of mineral dust to activate AM eicosanoid production.

This paper presents the development of ultrasonic grinding technology for material and mineral processing. The principles underlying this new technology, as well as their implementation in two laboratory scale devices are described in detail. Ultrasonic grinding experiment results are discussed with respect to operating variables and the achieved product sizes. Special attention has been given to the electrical energy consumption of the grinder, and an attempt to compare its efficiency with tumbling mills has been made. A mechanical system capable of measuring the specific grinding energy is also described.

The Cove gold-silver deposit is located 50 km southwest of Battle Mountain, Nevada and 1.5 km northeast of the McCoy Mine. Total proven and probable reserves are 48.7 Mt (53.7 Mst) with an average grade of 1.85 g/t (0.054 oz/st) Au and 87.1 g/t (2.54 oz/st) Ag. Mineralization is hosted by Triassic carbonate and siliciclastic rocks in two separate orebodies. Oxide ore consists of disseminated gold and silver in clay-altered, manganese-flooded limestone. Sulfide ore is dominated by pyrite-sphalerite-galena veins in siliciclastic rocks and sandy dolomite. Gold and silver occur in the native state, associated with the base metal sulfides. Mineralization is interpreted to be the distal expression of a porphyry system. The McCoy gold (copper) deposit is interpreted to be the proximal expression of the same system.

One of the key operations in any milling circuit is grinding. Over the last two decades, large diameter Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills have become the preferred primary grinding mills. The drive systems became more complex as the size of the mills became larger, during which time operating and design experience for SAG mill accumulated. Considerable reliance is now placed in power electronics to provide flexibility in SAG mill operation to meet the demands of lower operating costs. Whereas earlier most SAG mills were designed to operate at fixed speeds, present day SAG mills can operate at a fixed speed or variable speed through the use of an AC synchronous motor or DC motor. However, this flexibility comes with an increase in capital and operating costs. Since the capital and operating costs of a project directly affect the project's rate of return, the selection of a SAG mill and its drive system should depend, in part, on the impact that the extra cost makes on the project. This impact can be measured by performing an economic analysis based on Net Present Cost (NPC) calculations. Although the NPC calculation is an important factor in the grinding mill selection, other factors such as reliability of mill drives and power source are important elements in the decision making process. This paper examines how the NPC calculation, plus reliability and power source, influence SAG mill selection.

Underground room-and-pillar mining operations in the Warrior Coal Field in Alabama frequently suffer instability due to soft floor and thinly-laminated immediate roof. The investigation covered by this paper concerns a mine that was experiencing ground-control problems with weak floor conditions. Four hundred ft above the presently producing seam, another seam has been mined out. Several roof falls occurred locally, and as much as two ft of floor heaves have been experienced. The paper presents the results of comprehensive analysis conducted on floor heave, roof sagging, and the influence of the mined-out seam using instrumentation and numerical analysis.

There are few organic ligands that can adsorb effectively on noble metals, especially gold, in aqueous media. Ligands containing sulfur and nitrogen donors are known to be the most effective. Dithiophosphorous acids, for example, are known to adsorb on gold under certain conditions and these, along with xanthates, are used traditionally to recover gold values by flotation from ores. These compounds, however, are not necessarily selective for gold since most of the associated sulfide minerals are also floated. Monothiophosphorous acids, on the other hand, were recently discovered to float gold values selectively from sulfide-containing ores in a mildly alkaline medium; thus the dicresyl monothiophosphate is now used commercially in a gold flotation operation in the U.S.

In the excavation works of some deep foundation pits within the boundaries of Guang­dong Province of China, though some measures, such as steel sheet piles, diaphragm walls, etc. were taken to protect the walls, the construction of the excavation works was often accompanied by damage of buildings and public facilities, surface settelment. sand boil and collapse of piles. When these happened, only chemical grouting could be used as the most efficient measure for rushing to deal with or rescue the emergencies. Besides, the application of chemical grouting protection wall technique also palys a very important role under the geologic conditions of the coastal areas of Guangdong Province, when applied in the mucky oystershell layer wealthy in water and the deep mud layer, it can not only achieve good results, but also reduce the cost significantly. In this paper, we discuss the water-tight and earth retaining functions of chemical grouting protection wall in weak formation, and introduce the applicable ranges of chemical grouting protection wall in the excavation of deep foundation pits. Some technological principles and design considerations of the construction of chemical grouting protection wall are presented. Different types of protection wall are also introduced.

This Spotlight gives a brief summary of the proposed 1991 tax amendments of relevance to mines and mining houses. It should be read together with the author's article South African mining tax in the 1990's', which appeared in the August 1990 issue of this Journal. A number of tax amendments of relevance to the mining industry were proposed by the Minister of Finance in his March 1991 budget speech. In addition, certain other measures that may be implemented were set out in the budget review document released at the same time. A word of caution is necessary: these measures will become law only if and when they are enacted in the appropriate legislation. When this legislation is tabled in June, it may not contain all of the measures discussed below, some of the measures may appear in modified form, and other measures not discussed at the time of the budget may well appear. Unless otherwise stated, the 1991 tax amendments will affect companies with years of assessment ending in the twelve-month period to 31st March, 1992.

"The pendulum in Ottawa has swung dramatically from fiscal policy to monetary policy over the last several years. International trends indicate that the pendulum has to start its swing the other way, if Canada's mining industry is to maintain its preeminent position in the global mining arena. This article, which is based on a paper presented by the author at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Newfoundland Branch of CIM, identifies these trends and how they could interact with Canadian policy.IntroductionThe title of this paper is not a very imaginative or catchy one, but it states the topic quite succinctly, if not tersely. This paper looks into a crystal ball to see what might be in store for mine financing over the balance of the current decade.In the event that the reader feels some trepidation about the prospect that such a paper could seek to be the definitive work on the subject, it should be made clear at the outset that this is not the case. The author is, after all, not an economist, a scholar, a financial analyst, or a soothsayer, but is rather a simple accountant who has been closely involved with the mining industry, and the financing thereof, for some twenty years.The paper recognizes that, while a mine may be born when production begins, the mine is conceived when exploration starts. As this act of conception is obviously an essential part of mining, the financing of exploration is also covered in this paper. To attain a focus, this paper approaches the topic of mine financing in the nineties as follows: first, the major emerging forces in the industry are identified: and, second, the implications of each of these forces on financing are considered."

Over the years the coal industry in Alabama has generated about 150 million tons of fine waste coal, increasing at a rate of 2 million tons/year, during mining and cleaning operations. Reclamation of the fine-size wastes containing 20-60% by weight clean coal provides, free of charge, mined and crushed feedstocks for coal recovery and eliminates a major source of acid water pollution. Tests were made on the impounded wastes and current plant discharges to recover the coal fraction by sizing, gravity and flotation techniques. Gravity separation of the plus 100 mesh material produced commercial grade coal averaging 8.2% ash, 0.8% sulfur and 13,350 Btu/lb. However, the coal recovery was relatively low at 50-65%. Froth flotation using mechanical and froth column methods gave similar coal products at much higher coal recovery of 87-93%. The coal produced analyzed 10% ash and 1.1% sulfur.

A team of researchers at the University of Kentucky, working under a USBM contract, developed over 65 simulation exercises for teaching and testing problem-solving and decision-making skills to miners and mining engineers. These skills involve both improving judgment and decision making in mine emergencies and enhancing the learning of real-world engineering design principles. The exercises are ideally suited for either latent image format or for computer-aided instruction. Exercise features are summarized, the structure and field testing of typical exercises described, and sample frames of individual exercises presented. Empirical data are summarized that describe the effectiveness of using these short, time-efficient performance tasks that simulate real problems and that provide immediate corrective feedback for teaching and testing critical skills. The Bureau of Mines is investigating the leaching of phosphate values from Florida phosphatic clay wastes using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the leaching agent and methanol as the solvent. Acid-alcohol leaching studies were done using pure crystalline apatite to investigate potential causes for low extractions. It was found that a barrier layer formed on the surface of the apatite. Initial discovery of the barrier layer was made by analyzing pure apatite samples before and after leaching using an optical microscope. Subsequent Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analyses proved the coating was calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4-1/2H2O) and that unreacted apatite existed beneath the coating. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs depict the CaSO4-1/2H2O morphology as long slender crystals adhering to the apatite surface. It was also shown that grinding the leached tailings and leaching again in the H2SO4-methanol system resulted in additional phosphate extraction.

The Kubota surface melting system has been under development since 1975. It has found commercial application on the melting of municipal sludge, and ash from solid waste. The melted product has physical properties allowing its use as a substitute for aggregate in cement and asphaltic construction. Many manganiferous silver deposits remain undeveloped because standard chemical extraction methods yield poor recoveries or are ' environmentally unacceptable. Biotreatment of such ore deposits in our laboratory resulted in manganese and silver recoveries of greater than 90%. Ore and sediment samples were collected from mining sites in Colorado and Arizona. Portions of samples were incubated in a semi-solid mineral salts medium amended with 20 mM glucose mid manganese dioxide (Mn medium). The cultures were incubated at 3(fC until manganese reduction was detected by a .color change fr:om .black to clear. Bacteria from these cultures were purified on Tryptic Soy Agar and individual isolates were retested for Mn reduction by an agar overlay method. Bacteria were identified according to Bergefs Manual ?of Systematic . Bacteriology. Most of the Mn-reducing bacteria are Bacillus species. Bacterial manganese reduction kinetic experiments were performed in 52 ml mineral salts broth supplemented with manganiferous silver ore instead of manganese dioiide. These cultures were incubated with agitation for 16 d. Aliquots were removed periodically and analyzed for solubilized manganese by atoniic absorption (AA). Cyanide (1,0 M) Vias added to the remaining ore-medium mixture for a 24 h bottle roll. The supernatant was analyzed for soluble silver by AA. Similar experiments were conducted on a larger scale using 15% pulp density. After bfotreatment of the ore, standard bottle rolls were performed. The pregnant solutions and the residues were analyzed for manganese and silver?using AA or fire assay as appropriate. In sterile. controls-which received no biotreatment, manganese and silver recoveries were 0.3% and 10% respectively; During biotreatment, total manganese solubilizatiori was as high as 99.8%. The reduced manganese could . be stripped from ?the growth medium using hydrometallurgical techniques. Silver recovery vaned from 70% to 92.5%. Microbial treatment of refractory mangairlferous ores can result in high recoveries of manganese and silver. Retention time varies depending upon the relative concentrations of manganese, silver, and other metals in the ore with only two days required in some cases, The biotreatment of ore is environmentally' acceptable while the use. of chemicals such as sulfur dioxide is less so.

Most of the gold in the earth's crust occurs as finely-dispersed gold and accounts for much of the gold lost in extraction processes and during exploration for gold. The Compositions, sizes, and morphology of fine gold particles (0.01 to 10 ~m in diameter) were studied with high resolution electron microscopy coupled with electron microprobe and microdiffraction devices, using colloidal carbon replicas. Correlations were made between fine gold, mineral associations and ore genesis. The results provide qualitative information on the proportions of finely dispersed, invisible and visible gold distribution in ores. Such knowledge is fundamental when planning an optimum technological recovery process.
