Many gold-bearing ores in the Western United States also contain small amounts of mercury. The presence of mercury creates potential pollution and health hazards during several steps in gold processing. An investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to develop techniques for removing mercury from cyanide mill solutions by selective electrowinning to reduce the potential hazards. Sixty-five percent of the mercury was selectively electrowon from synthetic carbon strip solution at applied potentials of 1.00 to 1.50 V when using a mercury-coated platinum or copper plate cathode. Increasing the active surface area by using mercury-coated copper wool resulted in up to % pct of the mercury being electrowon from mill carbon strip solutions that contained 1.9 to 20 ppm Hg, 20 to 345 ppm Au, and 0.35 to 39.5 ppm Ag. About 98 pct of the silver was electrowon with the mercury onto the mercury cathode. Gold extraction ranged between 0 and 20 pet. Results of the investigation showed that choice of cathode material was critical to the success of the process. Selectivity was not achieved using uncoated steel wool cathodes.

The reaction kinetics of sulfuric acid leaching of brass foundry flue dusts were studied. As received flue dusts were separated into two size fractions, a coarse fraction (median size 103.5 microns) and a fine fraction (median size 3.4 microns). Experiments were performed on both fractions al-though most results are reported for the coarse fraction. Leaching experiments were conducted in a stirred reactor to determine those factors which govern the kinetic response of the sys-tem. The kinetics were followed by determining the increase in the concentration of dissolved copper with time. The effects of temperature, concentration and oxygen partial pressure on the rate of copper dissolution were examined. In addition, reaction residues were examined by SEM, EDAX and X-ray analysis. An activation energy of 4.8 kcal/mole (20.08 kJ/mole) was calculated. The rate was found to be significantly dependent on oxygen partial pressure and acid concentration. The order of the reaction with respect to oxygen partial pressure and hydrogen ion concentration was approximately 1.50 and 0.37, respectively. "The trend towards near net shape casting requires the development of more complex design and control algorithms for continuous casting ""machines in particular with respect to the solidification process.Compared to conventional continuous casting the reduction in casting thickness allows to influence more directly the solidification rate by control variables like surface cooling and/or casting speed.In order to enable the determination of these control variables for a given solidification profile, an algorithm (inverse solidification analysis) has been developed based on nonlinear constrained optimization. The application of the model is illustrated by practical examples ranging from conventional continuous casting to advanced thin slab casting.IntroductionProcess development in the Iron and Steel Industry is directed towards the realization of continuous process sequences. Since the direct linkage of processes imposes some restrictions onto the individual process steps, more complex algorithms are needed for design of equipment and control of operation. In particular the recent trend to reduce casting thickness, i.e. to cast thin slabs, has made the direct coupling of continuous casting and rolling absolutely necessary. "A microscope-based spectrophotometer has been developed to measure superoxide release from single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) or other phagocytes in culture. Results indicate that PAM respond to stimulation by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). It appears that some PAM do not release 02 upon stimulation by PMA; however, those that do release 0, show differences in: (I) the total amount of 0, released, (2) the rate of release of 02 and (3) the time delay for release of 02. The significance of measuring 02 release from single cells is two-fold. It allows the simultaneous study of 02 release and electrical potential changes across the membrane of PAM and it allows the study of differences in 02 release among cells. Thus, the function of Normal PAM and the dysfunction of PAM exposed to coal dusts can be more closely studied on single cells.Pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM), free cells found in the lungs, protect the lungs by removing inhaled foreign debris and bacteria. The macrophages do this by engulfing and then internalizing the foreign matter (phagocytosis). Stimulation of PAM causes the release of super-oxide radical (02) which has been shown to be the primary metabolite involved in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes (3,8,12). The super-oxide radical is highly reactive and is spontaneously or enzymatically converted to other antibacterial oxidants, including hydrogen peroxide (H202), singlette oxygen ( 02), hydroxyl radical toil'), and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) (2, 3,8,11,12).Exposure of PAM to dusts may lead to dysfunction of this cell-type and to a greater risk of lung damage or infection upon subsequent exposure to toxic dusts. To date, much of the research with this cell-type has used cytotoxicity (cell death) as a measure of dysfunction. Although this is an important end point, PAM dysfunction may occur at doses below those which lead to cell death. In addition, dysfunction has been measured using large numbers of cells. In order to obtain a clear understanding of the mechanisms involved in dysfunction, measurements should be made on single cells. As mentioned earlier, one of the major roles of this cell type is its anti-bacterial actions. Therefore, asessment of release of superoxide radical in single cells is important in determining the functional behavior of PAM before and after exposure to dusts. Since measurements of 02 production have not been made on single cells the purpose of this study is to develop the methodology needed to study release of 02 from single cells.Recent studies have suggested that a relationship exists between the release of 02 and changes in the electrical properties of phagocytes. The change in membrane potential is thought to be the initial step in superoxide production (6,9). Stimulants which cause 02 release also cause changes in the transmembrane potential of phagocytes (9) and in the permeability of the cell membrane to ions (6). For example, stimulants which cause the release of 0, from neutrophils have also been shown to increase the membrane transport of Na+ , K+ and Ca+2 and stimulation of macrophages leads to increases in Na and perhaps Ca permeability with a subsequent change in membrane potential. In some cases, phagocytic activity has been shown to depend upon the extracellular concentrations of these ions (6). Holian and Daniele (7) have shown evidence that the redistribution ofcellular Ca in alveolar macrophages is an initial step leading to 0, release. In order to provide direct evidence that 02- production is related to electrical changes across the plasma membrane of phagocytes, these two phenomena must be analyzed simultaneously on single cells. Mesozoic and Tertiary mineral deposits in west-central Arizona are commonly associated with Mesozoic thrust faults and Tertiary detachment faults, respectively. Quartz-kyanite rocks and pyritic quartz-sericite schists with local anomalous gold are the product of probable Jurassic argillic alteration of Jurassic volcanic, sedimentary, and plutonic rocks followed by Cretaceous thrust burial and associated metamorphism. Slivers and sheets of Paleozoic carbonates along Mesozoic thrust faults were locally sites of syn-and post-thrust mineralization. Widespread brecciation along Tertiary detachment faults resulted in increased permeability along fault zones. Elevated thermal gradients also resulted from detachment faulting and apparently caused convective aqueous-fluid circulation along detachment faults and associated Fe+Cu±Au mineralization.

World primary nickel production in 1987 is projected to be 770,000 mt, slightly higher than that in 1986. Market economy country (MEC) production in 1987 is projected to be about 524,000 mt, an increase of almost 5 pct over 1986 production. Production cutbacks and closures at Japanese ferronickel plants in 1987 resulted primarily from the strong yen and higher energy prices. Cutbacks also caused reductions in ore production from Indonesia, New Caledonia, and the Philippines. Technical problems affected production, to varying degrees, in Botswana, Indonesia, and Yugoslavia. World primary nickel production for 1988 is projected to be 787,000 mt, of which 536,000 mt will be produced in MECs. Increased production is projected from Botswana, Canada, Cuba, and possibly Greece and Yugoslavia, while slight production decreases are projected for Indonesia, New Caledonia, the Philippines, and Zimbabwe. .. South African nickel production in 1988 could be severly curtailed by social strife. In the early 1990's Brazil and China could be major economic competitors to Western nickel producers.

The implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) has evolved into one of the most complex environmental protection programs to come out of the late 1970's. The level of detail in the statute and the regulations have resulted in a rigid and complex set of requirements for the administration, permit-ting, inspection and enforcement of the program. In addition, the constant change of the federal program caused by regulatory changes, reorganization of the Office of Sur-face Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), ongoing litigation involving OSMRE, and the use of the budget to establish additional mandates on OSMRE and the State Regulatory Authorities have resulted in an unstable program. The instability of the program makes it extremely difficult for the States to implement their programs and to achieve the goals of SMCRA.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the nine separate parcels that comprise the 4,330-acre South Warner Contiguous Wilderness Study Area in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The nine parcels are along the east side of the South Warner Wilderness. They are, from north to south, the Granger, Milk, Cottonwood, Owl, Hornback, Eagle, Emerson, Barber, and Van Riper parcels. The Wilderness Study Area is underlain by basaltic, andesitic, and rhyolitic volcanic rocks and by sand and gravel deposits. Low-grade metamorphism is widespread in the volcanic rocks, with quartz, zeolites, datolite, chlorite, and calcite locally abundant in veins and amygdules. The rocks have been displaced by the mountain-front Surprise Valley fault and by crosscutting high-angle faults.

In the Piedmont, heavily loaded structures are generally supported by either drilled piers or one of several pile types. The choice of drilled piers or piles is typically one of comparative costs. The cost of a drilled pier foundation is usually the more difficult to predict because of the greater impact that variable conditions and construction monitoring have on cost. Poor specifications, related to the drilling equipment, procedures and bearing level, can also result in large cost extras. In the southern Piedmont, straight shafts are typically extended down to hard rock to achieve primary support in end-bearing: when bells are required, they are often constructed manually. In some eastern and northern Piedmont locations the thickness of the decompossed rock zone is significant and considerable skin friction can be mobilized. Typically piers are constructed in holes temporarily cased with steel liners. The bottom is cleaned of loose material and water, and then evaluated by a geotechnical engineer to confirm the design bearing pressure (and friction, where appropriate) or recommend alternative construction measures.

The White Cliffs diatomite deposit occurs in a lacustrine facies of the Quiburis Formation, an Upper Miocene to Pliocene basin-fill sediment of the lower San Pedro Valley. On-going geo-logic mapping has defined an 2.5-3.0 m (8-10 ft) thick ore zone near the mill site, several marker beds, a NNW-trending high-angle normal fault, and a NW-trending syncline. The diatomite has an average loose-weight dry bulk density of 130 kg/m3 (8 lbs/ft3) and is presently marketed outside Arizona for asphalt filler. Current development is projected to yield 3500 mt (4000 st) of finished product, with an estimated 91,000 mt (100,000 st) of finished product obtain-able from several other nearby sites.

Results of investigations on adsorption and desorption of CO M CH and a mixture of the two gases are described.4 Results showed that even when the equilibrium conditions contains 50% Co and 50% CH4, the gas emission in the initia' stages will contain as much as 80% CH . 4 The temperature has a small effect and so also particle size for 1.4-11.2mm. The ratio of CO2/CH gases adsorbed in coal samples depends upon t4he equilibrium pressure and this ratio decreases with pressure. Results of field tests support laboratory studies.

The effects of HBr concentration and temperature on the solubility and hydration state of AlBr3,' CoBr2, PbBr2, MnBr2, KBr, and NaBr were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Saturated aqueous solutions of the AI, Pb, K, and Na bromides were sparged with HBr gas at 20°, 40°, and 60° C, and saturated solutions of Co and Mn bromides were sparged at 20° C. Increased HBr concentration caused decreased salt solubility because of the common ion effect for all the investigated bromides except PbBr2. Aqueous solubilities at 20° C were, in percent, 51.7 for AlBr3, 53.2 for CoBr2, 1.1 for PbBr2, 59.6 for MnBr2' 39.5 for KBr, and 47.4 for NaBr. At 60° C, the solubilities were, in percent, 53.3 for AlBr3, 2.2 for PbBr2' 46.0 for KBr, and 53.8 for NaBr. Solubilities in solutions sparged to HBr saturation at 20° C were, in percent, 0.5 for AlBr3, 42.0 for CoBr2, 32.2 for PbBr2, 21.0 for MnBr2, 0.6 for KBr, and 0.3 for NaBr. At 60° C, the solubilities at HBr saturation were, in percent, 1.8 for AlBr3, 41.4 for PbBr2, 1.3 for KBr, and 0.4 for NaBr. CoBr2 precipitated out to a minimum solubility of 27.2 pct at 28.7-pct-HBr concentration. Further increases in HBr concentration increased CoBr2 solubility because of the formation of bromide complexes. PbBr2 in-creased in solubility as HBr concentration increased.

Humic acids adsorb on coal and depress coal floatability in the acidic pH range. In alkaline solutions, their effect is not pronounced. In the neutral pH range, a second small addition of kerosene plus MIBC leads to a significant increase in coal yield and better selectivity. Humic acids present on oxidized coal surface were found to be responsible for the inhibited floatability of the? coal. As expected, the flotation of such oxidized coal also strongly depends on the method of pH adjustment.

"A computer model was constructed for bacterial leaching of the major sulfides found in porphyry deposits, including bornite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, covellite, cubanite, enargite, native copper, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. The model incorporates equations for the sulfide minerals dispersed in the rock matrix. Leaching occurs by reactions with ferric ion diffusing into the rock fragment: Ferrous ion is resenerated to ferric with oxygen by bacteria at a temperature dependent rate. The model keeps track of the net acid generated, oxygen consumed by the bacterial oxidation of ferrous ion, heat generated, jarosite and hematite precipitated, and copper leached. The model was used to predict the rate of copper recovery, heat generation and oxygen demand for a variety of run-of-mine sized porphyry ores. These results were used in the design of a ventilation system and the economic analysis of a modified in situ extraction method that may be cost competitive with conventional copper production involving open pit mining.IntroductionA study was undertaken at the University of Utah to evaluate the technological and economic feasibility of mining copper by a method referred to as Flood Drain Leach Cell (FDLC) mining. Cells 60 by 75 meters in plan and 70 meters in height are created throughout the ore body by a modified Vertical Retreat Mining technique that includes the removal of 25% swell material. The swell material is leached in finger dumps on the surface while the cells underground are bulkheaded, flooded, drained, and artificially aerated to promote bacterial ferric sulfate leaching. Solutions are cycled through several cells to reach pregnant grade of 1 gram copper per liter of solution. These solutions are then fed to an underground solvent extraction plant and then a surface electrowinning tankhouse."

Over the past few years several commercial wetting agents and drying aids have been tested in the lab and in the plant at Gold Fields Mining's operations at Mesquite and Ortiz. The major goal was to increase recovery with these surfactants by improving the permeability of the pad and increasing the rate of penetration through the rock.

"The evolution of oxygen steelmaking is reviewed and new operating processes are described. The developments which could impact this technology are summarized. Staged and continuous steelmaking are considered in the light of new technologies. The future opportunities for oxygen steelmaking processes are overviewed. IntroductionThe use of oxygen in steelmaking was originally brought on the scene by the development of pneumatic steelmaking. Sir Henry Bessemer in England originally conceptualized the use of gaseous oxygen in steelmaking, and then he and William Kelly in Eddyville, Kentucky independently developed the original pneumatic process which involved blowing air through a bath of molten pig iron to oxidize the carbon and silicon and produce steel. This process and many following processes, including those which would use pure oxygen gas, have been proposed.Beginning with the first commercial oxygen steelmaking vessels at Linz, Austria in 1952, the world steelmaking industry has adopted this style of processing. In general, the process has involved the use of steel scrap in amounts from 20 to 35% of the metallic charge with molten pig iron produced in blast furnaces making up the remainder. The impurities in the charge are oxidized through the use of oxygen gas injected into the steelmaking vessel.However, currently being adopted into commerical practice and on the horizon are a number of advances in this process which include the use of iron ores as a source of iron and oxygen, the use of an all scrap charge, incorporation of pre-reduced iron, the use of auxillary fuels to change the balance of cold and liquid iron-base charge materials and numerous refining techniques."

The technique of backfilling in the gold mining industry is dependent on the dewatering of slurry to form a solid support system. In many cases flocculants are added to the slurry to increase the rate of dewatering. To ensure that a stable support is obtained it is important that the chemistry, application and limitations of these flocculant additives are understood. Flocculant additives have to be added at a point where minimum shear will occur. (Shear occurs when a flocculant is exposed to excess energy resulting in breakdown, of the floc.) To ensure that optimum results are obtained it is important that personnel involved are trained to use the flocculant additives and dosing equipment correctly.

A new technology for recovery of metals from spent catalysts containing aluminum, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel and vanadium was developed. The catalysts are decomposed in two consecutive pressure leaching steps. Sodium aluminate-sodium hydroxide systems are lixiviants in both leaching steps. Selective extraction of molybdenum and vanadium is achieved in the first leaching step. The leach liquor is processed for separation and recovery of these two metals. The residue from the first leaching step is further processed in a second leaching step where alumina is solubilized. The residue from this operation is a nickel-cobalt concentrate. Alumina is separated from the second stage leach liquor by precipitation; the depleted liquor, a sodium aluminate solution, is recycled to the first and second leaching step. This technology has advantages over other approaches for the recovery of metals from spent catalysts because no solid waste is generated.

"The feasibility to vacuum distillation of a crude metal or an alloy was discussed. The equilibrium relationship between vapor phase and liquid phase in A-B system - - - - - PA/PB =BAa*/b has been derived. The separation coefficient, BA = rAPA/(rBPB) is a judgment criterion. By calculation PA/PB, the equilibrium composition diagram of vapor phase and liquid phase was drawn. By use of the equation derived by M. Olette, the relationship among the volatilization amounts of various impurities in a crude metal (yi) was further solved. 1-(X/100)= C =(1-Y1/100)1/02i . From yi value obtained in practice, 2i, Pi and then can be calcu-lated. The correct volatilization order of various impurities was obtained. These results can be applied to determine the practical conditions (temperture, vacuum degree, type of distilla¬tion furnace, times of distillation and control of product composition) in distillation of a crude metal or an alloy.INTRODUCTIONRefining and separation of various impurities from nonferrous crude metals by vacuum distillation have many the advantages of high metal recovery, impurities recovered in metallic state, flowsheet simplified, good enviromental protection, low operation costs and in complex equipment. So in recent years this method has been adopted widely.Vacuum distillation has also been studied and used in separation of various elements from non-ferrous alloys and the area of its application is being extended rapidly.At this situation, some problems have been put up: What kind of impurities can be removed from crude metals? What kind of alloys can be separated by vacuum distillation? In present paper, attemps have been made to answer these problems and combine with practical results to analyse some valuable data obtained from testwork on vacuum distillation of crude tin and Pb-Sn alloy."
