The House Ways and Means Committee recently heard a bitter dispute over whether gasoline with lead is a worse pollutant than gasoline without lead. The lead industry is also squarely in the middle of this dispute for obvious reasons. Lead used in gasoline amounts to 270,000 tpy, or more than 254 of the annual total mined in the U.S. Few industries can face the loss of such a market without wondering how they are to stay in business. The lead industry picked up unexpected support in this dispute, however, when the AFL-CIO stepped up with outright opposition to the President's proposal to tax lead in gasoline.

A graphic method has been devised for three-di-mensional analysis of hot deformation and for correlating the amount and directionality of the deformation with resulting directional properties. Deformation is evaluated in terms of dimensional change ratios referred to three orthogonal axes. Since all combinations of the three ratios can be represented in a triangular coordinate field with logarithmic scales, a two-dimensional chart of extent of deformation and degree of asymetry is possible. The entire gamut of shape changes from upsetting through flat-rolling to rod-rolling is accommodated. The resulting coordinate system is a base upon which can be represented the properties of the wrought products measured in the directions of the axes employed fir evaluating the deformation. When property data are available for many types and amounts of deformation, a three-dimensional figure can be constructed, and the projection of this figure is referred to as a ''3d'' chart. Experience in using such charts to plan fabricating operations for a variety of thick-section forged and rolled products of heat-treated aluminum alloys has verified its practical value for optimizing directionality relationships. MechANICAL anisotropy of thick section products of heat-treatable aluminum alloys is recognized by producers and users of these products, and the extent of the directional differences is apparent in property tabulations included in handbooks, standards, and specifications.' Attention has also been directed to the existence of important directional differences in the resistance of these products to stress-corrosion cracking. Metallurgical structure factors responsible for these directional differences include, among other possibilities, shape and alignment of grains, voids and nonmetallic inclusions (when present), volume fraction and spatial distribution of secondary phase particles and solid-state precipitates, crystal-lographic textures, and Bauschinger effect. The contributions of the individual factors vary with alloy composition, heat-treated temper, type of working process (forging, rolling, extrusion), and the amount and directional nature of the deformation. In general, the cast ingot used as the starting material for producing these wrought products exhibits only a modest degree of directionality. A monotonic and continuous transition from this nearly isotropic state with progressive hot deformation would appear probable, assuming that the working temperature is sufficiently high to cause continuous dynamic recovery. Several years ago a project was undertaken to evaluate the effects of hot deformation and metallurgical structures on the directionality of thick wrought aluminum alloy products, and the method to be described was developed as an analytical tool in this investigation. DIRECTION NOMENCLATURE The nomenclature system adopted by industry for the three mutually perpendicular directions employed in testing aluminum alloy products includes four terms: "longitudinal", "transverse", "long transverse", and "short transverse". These terms are conventionally related to the external geometry of the product but also by implication to the deformation and resulting metallurgical structure. Occasions arise in which through use of unusual fabricating methods, intentional or otherwise, the structure does not have the usual relationship to external geometry or may be very complex because of inhomogeneity of deformation throughout the piece. The longitudinal direction is generally parallel to the primary rolling direction or to the direction of extrusion. In the case of forging, it is parallel to the direction of maximum extension (not maximum "working" or "flow", as frequently stated). The term transverse is applied to any direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction in a product having symmetry about the longitudinal axis, and generally, although not always, the deformation to produce these forms is nearly symmetrical in the transverse plane. This term then may be applied to a round, square, hexagon, or other polygonal, symmetrical shape produced by extrusion or rolling or by forging, if produced by a simple, symmetrical drawing procedure. Electroplating is a widely utilized but little understood process. The fact that the average person is in contact with dozens of plated items daily without even being aware that they are electroplated is evidence of the success of the process. Although a complete explanation of electrodeposition involves thermodynamics and modern theories of bonding and catalytic reactions, in its simplest form the process conforms to the following description. A metal salt dissolved in water partially dissociates into negatively charged and positively charged ions. In the case of nickel sulfate dissolved in water, for example, a portion of the salt dissociates into positively charged nickel ions and negatively charged sulfate ions. If an electrical potential is applied between two electrodes in this solution, the nickel ions migrate toward the cathode and the sulfate ions toward the anode. The negatively charged cathode has a high concentration of electrons, which combine with the positively charged metal ions to form neutral metal atoms with a stable electron configuration. These insoluble atoms thus form a deposit on the cathode.

A transmission electron microscope study was made of magnesium single crystals deformed in torsion using the basal pole as the forsional axis. While this type of deformation is predicted to result in the formation of hexagonal networks of screw dislocations, these networks were not observed. The basic dislocation arrangement consisted of arrays of nearly parallel and approximately equally spaced dislocations. The average dislocation density was over an order of magnitude higher than that required to account for the torsional deformation. The observed high rate of work hardening in these crystals is consistent with both their high dislocation densities and the arrangement of dislocations in pile-ups. The experimental observations are also in agreement with the assumption that dislocation sources are activated not only at the surface but at interior locations as well. In considering torsional deformation, Amelinckx and Dekeyser1 postulated that when a torque is applied to a crystal oriented with a glide plane normal to the specimen axis, deformation occurs by the following steps: 1) Nucleation of dislocation sources at or near the specimen surface in areas where the shear stress, resolved along a slip Burgers vector, is a maximum; 2) the screw orientations of the dislocations accommodating the twist move inwards towards the specimen center. If two glide directions lie on the glide plane, the geometry shown in Fig. 1 should result; 3) the screw dislocations that pile up in the central part of the specimen cross-slip to form a grid. At the same time, screws of opposite sign and most edges leave the specimen. Tinder,2 using zinc crystals twisted about the basal pole, independently reached essentially the same conclusions. He suggested a mechanism involving nucleation of ?(1120) screw dislocations at the six points of highest resolved shear stress that lie on the cross-section near the surface. Under the applied shear stress these dislocations were assumed to move inward and interact so as to form a hexagonal network of screw dislocations. Today it is often accepted that rotational slip occurs by a mechanism of the above type, but to our understanding this has never been experimentally proved. This paper reports an experimental study of rotational slip, using magnesium single crystals, that indicates that in this metal rotational slip does not conform well to this mechanism. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Mechanical Testing. Specimens with a (0002) axis were prepared from magnesium crystals of 99.95 pct purity grown by Jillson's3 modified Bridgman technique. "In response to needs created by intensive exploration and accelerating expansion of coal mining in the Western provinces, Canadian R & D on coal is progressively widening its scope. Principal interests continue to lie in coal geology, preparation and processing, carbonization, combustion and transportation, but much active work is also in progress with respect to mine environments, mined-land reclamation, and environmental consequences of coal mining, processing and use. Long-range 'basic' research, which characterized much of the R & D pattern in the fifties and early sixties and which was often no more than an attempt to prevent total extinction of a dying industry, has been somewhat de-emphasized, except insofar as it relates to 'safe' coal storage and to coal-based carbons (which are beginning to command attention as pollution control media).In this review, recent exploration, mine development and new preparation facilities are noted, and current R & D in transportation, processing, handling, carbonization and combustion is summarized. Reference is also made to investigations bearing on non-fuel uses of coal (notably as source-materials for carbons and agrobiological products)."

Specimens of a hydrided Mg-0.5 Zr alloy were strained in tension at 500°C and constant rates of 2 x10-3 5 x 10-3, and 2 X 10" min-1. Hydride-denuded zones formed at grain boundaries normal to the tensile-stress direction as a result of magnesium transport during difusional flow. The width of the zones could be measured and the measurement used for calculating the diffusional component of the imposed tensile strain. The strain from diffusional flow was found to increase with imposed strain at a diminishing rate, tending to saturate at approximately 12 pct. Strain rate sensitivity of flow stress was low. The apparent non Newtonian character of the diffusional flow is attributed to a non Newtonian process acting in parallel with it which could be boundary shear. Fracture grows out of voids that form in the denuded zones. DEFORMATION of a grain by diffusion of atoms from boundaries stressed in compression to boundaries stressed in tension is Newtonian viscous,1-3 and evidence has accumulated in recent years that such a process may be responsible for the high strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress of super-plastic alloys.4"7 One piece of evidence is that experimental stress: strain-rate relationships can be quantitatively explained.5-7 There is also metallo-graphic evidence of diffusional flow in superplas-ticity, but in a limited amount. The formation of striated bands on the surface of superplastically deformed specimens has been attributed to diffusional flow.5"7 The basis of that attribution came from experiments on a coarse-grained, nonsuperplastic and hydrided Mg-½ wt pct Zr alloy which formed hydride-denuded, light etching zones at tension-stressed boundaries when strained in tension at 270?C.6 The origin of these zones had already been traced to the diffusional flow of magnesium atoms to the boundaries.' The particular observations in the more recent work were of striated-band formation on the surface and denuded-zone formation internally, with both the bands and zones having the same width and appearing at tension-stressed boundaries. It was argued that the bands were a surface manifestation of the zones and hence of diffusional flow. Of course in superplastic alloys which do not contain internal metallographic "markers", the surface bands can be the only metallographic indication. In the present work, denuded-zone formation was utilized, as it has been by others,9-11 to extend the observations of diffusional flow and to measure the strain, ed, resulting from it. Grain size had to be large to measure ed with accuracy. The grain size chosen for this study was -30 , and with that a strain of 10 pct from diffusional flow produces a denuded zone only 3 µ in width. The large grain size naturally precludes superplasticity. The observations of diffusional flow were complemented by determining the strain from the other operative deformation modes: slip, e,, and grain boundary shear, egb. An incremental specimen extension is the sum of increments from slip, and grain boundary shear as well as diffusional flow. Division by a common length is required to convert to strain. If this length is taken as the initial specimen length, then imposed engineering strain, e, is given in terms of the component engineering strains by e = ed + es + egb [1] Stress:strain-rate relationships are determined by the way in which this "strain balance" is made up. EXPERIMENTAL Material. Zirconium hydride markers were introduced into the Mg-0.5Zr alloy by annealing in hydrogen at 450°C for 30 min. The hydride concentration was particularly high at zirconium rich stringers, which was fortunate in that the transverse boundaries at which denuded zones form lie perpendicular to the stringers. Grain size after annealing was 30 µ. Photomicrographs of unstrained and strained material are shown in Fig. 1. Procedure. Specimens were strained in tension with an Instron machine at crosshead velocities of either 2 x 10"3, 5 x X or 1 x 10-2 in. min-'. Specimen length and diameter were 1.0 and 0.2 in., respectively, so that initial strain rates in tests at constant crosshead speed were 2 x 10"3, 5 x X and 1 X l0-2 min-1. Tests were made at 500°C which is a compromise temperature at which diffusional flow is still measurable but grain growth is not active enough to interfere with metallographic measurements. The tests were made in a hydrogen atmosphere. Strain Balance. An equation additional to [I] is eg = ed + es [2] where eg is strain measured from grain elongation. Measurement was made of ed, eg, and, of course, e, which enabled all the strains in Eq. [I] to be determined. For this purpose, strained specimens were sectioned longitudinally, polished, and etched. The strain from diffusional flow, ed, was computed by measuring on photomicrographs the width in the tensile direction of denuded zones at either end of a grain XI, X2, adding them, and dividing by twice the initial longitudinal grain dimension L0, Fig. 2. Reported values are the results of measurements on seventy randomly selected grains; 95 pct confidence limits on ed were +1.5 pct strain. Experiments investigating the treatment of a ground wood white water waste from an Ontario pulp and paper mill by an HVCB coal are reported. Adsorption capacity for the waste, with a soluble COD contribution of 2,100 mg/I, amounted to 0.17 per cent, by weight, of the Nova Scotia coal used. Percolation of the white water waste through a coal bed indicated that soluble COD is removed. For finely ground coals, over 90 per cent of the suspended solids in the waste are retained on the coal. Plugging of the coal bed is rapid, so that any treating process using filtration would have to renew the surface of the bed frequently.

Optimum design of a structure obviously requires a thorough knowledge of the materials to be utilized in its construction. When the structure is a tunnel, a most important element in its design and construction is the geology. As a tunnel may be many miles in length and at depths of hundreds or thousands of feet, we face a real problem to meet the needs of the designer and builder. How can we determine the properties of our construction materials in this situation? Engineering geology has had a formidable challenge to meet the requirements of conventional excavation methods; the advent of machine methods for rapid excavation compounds the requirements for more detailed and more precise geological knowledge of the tunnel site. This chapter will discuss the means now at our disposal to meet the challenge to produce the required data on the tunnel site in the preconstruction stage. Our considerations will be directed towards construction of a free-flow tunnel, primarily in fractured rock formations, without any requirements for the rock mechanics type of in-situ tests that might be made for a pressure tunnel or for a large opening for an underground power plant. In essence the investigation must determine: (1) The geologic conditions affecting the type of construction equipment and excavation method of the rock to be broken and removed. (2) The quantities of water and gas to be encountered. (3) The strength and stability of the material surrounding the bore and its need for support and lining. GEOLOGICAL FACTORS AFFECTING TUNNEL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION The engineer or contractor may classify the rock as either competent or incompetent or more pointedly as "good" or "bad" ground. GruZLESKI and winegard1 have recently reported on the origin and development of the cellular substructure in Sn-Cd eutectic unidirectionally grown with different amounts of constitutional supercooling (CS). This communication deals with the results obtained in a parallel study on the instability of a plane interface in Al-Cu eutectic unidirectionally grown. Similarities as well as differences with the results of these authors1 will be presented. A1-Cu eutectic alloy ingots of 99.999 pct purity were grown unidirectionally under different G/R ratios where G = thermal gradient in the liquid, R = solidification rate. The ingots were cut in slices perpendicular to the solidification axes and the substructure studied on parallel sections following the sense of growth. It was generally found that the last part of the ingot to solidify presented a well developed colony substructure as a result of impurity build up and constitutional supercooling. The results obtained were: 1) When the structure was observed with low niagnification (of the order of 150 to 300 times) the first instabilities were observed at the grain boundaries and node-like structures formed at the junctions of the growth-induced boundaries, as reported by Gruz-leski and Winegard.1 Inside the grains the first signs of instability appear later and correspond to the type shown in Fig. 1; this is a two dimensional cell substructure. ' 2) Figs. 2 and 3 correspond to the evolution from a two dimensional substructure to a cellular type. In the A1-Cu eutectic the boundaries of the two dimensional cell are always perpendicular to the laniellaes instead of parallel as in the Sn-Cd eutectic. 1

The total iron ore production in Sweden in 1969 was 33.3 million metric tons. 31.7 million tons were exported mainly to Western European countries. 27.8 million tons (87 per cent) originated from the mines at Kiruna, Svappavaara and Malmberget, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Planned production for 1970 is 25 million tons during 10 months, due to a strike at the beginning of the year. Present production plans for the next five years expect an annual export capacity around 33 million tons in 1975, including 5.7 million tons of pellets. The mining and shipping at the loading terminals of Narvik on the Atlantic coast and Luleå at the Gulf of Bothnia are managed by LKAB - a 96 per cent state-owned company. 4 per cent of the share capital is owned by the private Grängesberg Company. The railway - 106 miles from Kiruna to Narvik and 130 miles from Malmberget to Luleå - is operated by the State Railways in Sweden and Norway. Comprehensive expansion of the Narvik ore port will be carried through during the next five years to increase the annual shipping capacity to at least 35 million tons and meet the development of rapidly growing ship sizes.

Large-scale tests in the U.S. Bureau of Mines Experimental Coal Mine show that the explosion hazard of coal dust on shuttle-car roadways can be con-trolled by proper application of water, dry rock dust, a saturated solution of ammonium phosphate, or mixtures of water or the water-phosphate solution with rock dust. The experiments were made with loadings of 1.0 and 5.0 pounds of mine size coal dust per linear foot of entry, and with a 3-or 4-inch-thick layer of coal rubble on the floor, The data from the tests with mine-size coal and rubble are comparable. The water contents of the dust loading were determined from samples collected just prior to initiation of a gas-air mixture in an ignition zone at the face Dust samples were collected 1 inch deep from the coal-rubble deposit. One experiment was made with the dust in the coal rubble bound with latex applied as a water solution by spray. The binding action was inadequate and explosion propagation was obtained.

A number of Federal laws affecting safety and health in the mining industry has been enacted and revised over a period of many years. We have tended to classify these laws and their applicability into three categories: 1) coal mines, 2) metal and nonmetallic mines, and 3) mines with Federal supply contracts. With the growing attention which is being given to mine safety by the Federal government, the entire mining industry should keep aware of all developments in the administration of each of these laws.

Gentlemen: I am pleased and regard it as a priviledge to give you a report on rapid roadheading with heading machines in the coal mining industry of Western Germany. Importance of Heading Operations in the West German Coal Mining Industry Every year about 770 km of headings are driven In the seams of the West German coal mines, most of them gate roads, the rest rise headings, to open new faces. In thick seams the heading operations are carried out entirely in the coal, in thin seams the country rock has to be ripped. The total length of 770 km corresponds to a rock volume of roughly 9.5 million m3; this figure underlines the importance of the heading operations in the coal mining industry of our country.

Analytical expressions are derived from empirical data relating the basic physical device parameters to the radiation dose. To put in perspective and justify the approach taken, the overall problem and methods of attempted solution of radiation damage to transistors in a missile or satellite environment is briefly examined. The main emphasis is on a new criteria for neutron radiation hardness and the device design implications resulting from using this criteria. Contrary to other derived criteria, the derived bipolar hardness relation depends mainly on the initial lifetime rather than the base transit time. It is shown, that contrary to previously accepted beliefs, the inherent attainable radiation tolerance of JFET's is at least a factor of ten greater than the radiation tolerance ofbipolars. Experimental results on JFET's designed for maximum neutron radiation tolerance are presented. The accuracy, utility, and range of possible validity of various published lifetime and carrier removal damage constants are discussed. It is well known that transistors are subject to damage due to radiation at much lower radiation levels than those which would cause structural damage to a missile or satellite. The three principal categories of radiation damage to transistors are displacement, ionization, and thermomechanical. The main cause of displacement damage is fast neutrons, and the main effects which permanently degrade transistor operation are minority carrier lifetime reduction and carrier removal. A second-order effect is mobility reduction. The main cause of ionization damage is gamma radiation which results in permanent effects due to charge build-up in the oxide and transient effects due to photo-current generation. The transient effects are usually handled by using circumvention techniques in the electronics system. The extent of the transistor degradation due to displacement and ionization damage depends strongly on the transistor type, whereas the extent of thermomechanical damage does not depend on the transistor type, but depends mainly on packaging and metallization which are common to all transistor types. The standard transistor types are categorized in Fig. 1 and typical cross-sections are shown in Fig. 2. The original reason for the designation of the two classes of transistors was that the unipolar operation depends on only one carrier (majority) and the bipolar operation depends on both minority and majority car- riers. The bipolar is then seriously degraded by minority carrier lifetime reduction, whereas the unipolar or field effect transistor is not. One of the two principle classes of field effect transistors, the junction field effect transistor (JFET), depends strongly on carrier removal. However, the insulated gate (MIS) is little affected by either carrier removal or lifetime changes, but is virtually eliminated as a radiation resistant device because of permanent charge build-up in the insulator caused by ionizing radiation. The bipolar and JFET suffer only minor effects due to charge build-up in the oxide passivation when compared1 to the MOS. This is because the active region of the MOS is adjacent to or part of the oxide layer. It is then the bipolar and JFET which are potentially resistant to permanent radiation damage. The tensile properties of binary W-Re alloys containing up to 33 at. pct Re were determined at temperatures from 78" to 3630°F. Elongations as high as 260 pct were observed in electron-beam-melted tungsten containing 23 at. pct Re when tensile-tested at 3630°F after a 1-hr anneal at 3090°F. All alloys tested under these conditions with rhenium contents between 20 and 28 at. pct exhibited elongations of at least 200 pct. These alloys also showed enhanced grain growth rates. The values of strain-rate sensitivity ranged between 0.2 and 0.3 for the alloys exhibiting high elongations. Houlezler, for swaged alloys tested just above the re-crystallization temperature, strain-rate sensitivities as high as 0.8 were observed. The high-temperature strengths of the high-rhenium-content alloys were also less than those of alloys with intermediate rhenium contents. ALLOYING with rhenium has two distinct effects on the mechanical properties of tungsten. One effect occurs in dilute solid solutions and is most clearly seen in the lowering of the hardness and of the ductile-brittle transition temperature at about 5 at. pct Re.1-3 The second effect occurs in the concentrated solid solution at about 25 at. pct Re, and is characterized by twinning and a larger decrease in the ductile-brittle transition temperature. An aspect of the high-rhenium-content alloy which has received little attention is the higher-than-usual tensile ductility at 3500°F.3 Anomalous high ductility has been observed in several other alloy systems. usually associated with a phase transformation or a solid-solubility limit.4'5 The phenomenon is now commonly termed superplasticity. High-strain-rate sensitivities6 and grain boundary sliding7 have been reported for materials that undergo superplastic deformation. Also, it has been found that superplastic materials usually have a very fine grain structure (less than 10 pm).8 and it has been proposedg that such a structure alone is sufficient for superplasticity. The purpose of the present study was to further characterize the high-temperature tensile properties of W-Re alloys to determine the conditions under which they might be superplastic. Tensile and selected strain-rate sensitivity tests were conducted on alloys containing 0 to 33.3 at. pct Re at temperatures from 78" to 3630°F. Grain-growth rates were also determined on most alloys at 3630°F. Fig. 1 indicates the compositions evaluated and their locations relative to the solvus line in the tungsten-rich end of the W-Re phase diagram. Twelve binary W-Re alloys containing up to 33.3 at pct Re were double electron-beam-melted and subsequently fabricated to 0.3-in. rod by extrusion and swaging. The starting materials were commercial powders of tungsten and rhenium with impurity levels as listed in Table I. The various blended W-Re compositions were hydrostatically pressed at 70 ksi. The pressed bars were drip-melted into 1.5-in.-diam ingots and then remelted into 2-in.-diam ingots at a chamber pressure of 10~5 torr. The ingots were canned in molybdenum and extruded to round bar at a reduction ratio of 6:l. The alloy extrusions were swaged to about an 80 pct reduction at 2100" to 2900°F. In the May, 1969 issue of Mining Engineering the Editorial Director, John V. Beall, described the Japanese Onahama Copper Smelter and Refinery as follows: "On the shore of the Pacific, 120 miles north of Tokyo, is the world's most modern copper smelter and refinery.? One of the improvements that has been made at the Onahama Refinery is the quality of the electrolyte in the copper refinery electrolytic cells. This has been accomplished by reducing the concentration of slimes in the cells between the electrodes. In a December 19, 1966 review in Chemical Engineering magazine reference was made to some tests in Sweden as follows: ?However, at 1,000 amps/sq.M., satisfactory cathodes could be prepared, provided electrolyte flow past the anode and cathode was at least 3 to 4 meters per minute, and the slime content was not allowed to exceed 20 to 30 mg. per liter. By dropping the current to 500 amps with the same electrolyte velocity, the slime content could grow to 50 mg. per liter (50 ppm) without causing occlusion at the cathode." From this data it appears that the production capacity of copper refining electrolytic cells can be significantly increased. In order to do this the concentration of suspended contaminating slimes in the electrolyte solution is reduced by filtration. The electrolyte in-between the active electrodes must be purged with higher velocities to maintain a high concentration of the desirable copper ion in the liquid film adjacent to the cathode and the sulfate ion in the liquid film at the anode. This higher velocity also carries away from the cathode the undesirable impurities released from the anode as they are released into the electrolyte as filterable solids.

The spherical agglomeration process provides an attractive method for the cleaning and recovery of fine coals in the form of compact oil-bonded pellets. In treating a washery effluent containing 50% minus 20 micron material by this technique, the slurry was first mixed under vigorous agitation with oil to deash and dewater the fine coal. The flocculated coal pulp was then formed into larger agglomerates on a modified balling disc. The operation of a semi-pilot scale process is described and an analysis of some of the operating and system variables is given. A semi-theoretical expression to predict the final agglomerate size under various conditions is derived and compared with the experimental data. Coal producers are faced with a growing requirement to clean and recover fine mesh coals. Greater mechanization of the extractive and preparation processes has resulted in finer-sized products containing larger quantities of associated foreign matter and preparation plant effluents contain quantities of fine coals which are potentially valuable. These losses will probably increase with the expansion of production and will require the development of effective disposal and utilization processes under pressure of the lack of adequate disposal areas, the enforcement of air and stream pollution laws, and the economic need to obtain the maximum yield of salable product(1)

In order to throw light on the mechanism of plastic deformation of WC-Co alloys, compressive tests of WC-(7 to 43) vol pct Co alloys have been carried out at room temperature, and stress-micro strain relation has been investigated in detail. The analysis of the factors affecting the yield stresses reveals that the yield stresses can be predicted by modified Oro-wan's theory if one properly estimates the planar in-terfiarticle spacings. Conzpressive straining of some of the alloys by 0.066 to 0.17pct increases the decrements by a factor of as much as 3.4 to 14, whereas the corresponding increase in the electrical resistivities is less than 10 pct. The analysis of the decrement data in terms of -Gramto and Lücke theory shows that the marked increase is attributed to increased dislocation darnping itt the binder (cobalt) phase. By cornbilling the decrement data and the conzjwession duta, one obtains the relation between flow stress in shear (?t) and increase in dislocation density (p): At = const . v6 . This is interHeted to mean that the mechanism of strain hardening of CirC-Co alloys is essentially sarne as the one for dispersion strengthened alloys. The possible effect of bridge formations between the carbide particles has also been examined. OWING to the combination of hardness, strength, and other physical and chemical properties, WC-Co alloys have opened the way for unique fields of applications, the recent ones being, for instance, anvils for super-high-pressure generation apparatuses. In such applications, the alloys are frequently subjected to very high compressive stresses: these stresses may cause the alloys to deform plastically and eventually to fail. However, much remains obscure regarding the nature of the plasticity of the alloys. Evidently, the alloys owe their high strength to the hard carbide particles which frequently occupy as much as 80 to 90 pct in volume fraction, whereas the ductility required for practical applications is provided by the small amount of the binder phase between the carbide particles. When the volume fraction of the carbide phase is not very large, deformation behavior of the alloys may be described by some of the current dispersion strengthening theories. However, greatly increasing the carbide phase is thought to lead to some carbide skeleton structure or bridge formations owing to the increased chances for direct contacts between the carbide particles;1,2 this may appreciably affect the plasticity of the alloys. Regarding the effect of formation of the carbide skeleton structure, it is interesting to note the work by Ivensen et al.3 on compression tests of the alloys containing somewhat large carbide particles; they observe extensive generation of slip bands in the carbide particles after application of some preliminary compressive stresses. They interpret the results in terms of plastic deformatiot: of the carbide particles which are supposed to have formed a skeleton structure; the binder phase plays only a passive role, at least in the early stages of the deformation. That carbide crystals exhibit microplasticity at room temperature is apparent from the work of Takahashi and Freise4 and French and Thomas5 on indentation of WC single crystals. On the other hand, Dawihl and coworkers6-10 maintain that even when volume fraction of the carbide phase is very large (for instance, more than 90 pet), a very thin binder layer generally exists between the carbide particles. They interpret the results of the extensive mechanical tests in terms of the plasticity of such a layer. Gurland and Bardzil11 point out that decrease in ductility of the alloys with increase in the carbide phase is caused by the effect of plastic constraint exerted by the dispersed carbide particles. Drucker12 further develops this concept from a continuum-mechanics approach on an assumption that a continuous thin binder layer separates the carbide particles. A common feature of the studies reported so far on the plasticity of the alloys is that the information deduced is invariably qualitative in nature. Thus, very few systematic experiments for obtaining reliable and sufficiently detailed stress-strain curves of the alloys varying widely in the microstructural features have been carried out. In particular, it may be of special interest to investigate in detail the early stages of the plastic deformation of the alloys in order to shed light on the strengthening mechanism. However, such work appears to be extremely rare. Doi et al.13 recently reported a first brief account of the results of some quantitative analysis of the plasticity of the alloys in terms of dislocation theory. Their experiment was rather limited in the composition range covered (volume fraction occupied by the carbide phase: 79 to 83 pct), and thus they could not necessarily elucidate the controlling mechanism of plastic deformation of the alloys of a more general composition range. Consequently, in the present investigation, deformation behavior and some other physical properties of the alloys were investigated and discussed in more detail over a much wider composition range. Earlier studies of the mechanism of flotation showed that coal flotation products are contaminated by composite coal and mineral particles. The mineral matter of these particles has the dual effect of increasing the specific gravity and decreasing the coal surface of the particle available for bubble attachment. The present study showed that these particles are more loosely held in the froth column than the high grade coal particles, especially in the coarser sizes. Consequently, it is possible in the laboratory to produce a secondary concentration of the product by sprinkling the froth product with water to wash these loosely held particles from the froth during formation and recovery. To improve coal flotation, Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s research department has been working on a number of related problems based on both physical and chemical factors. The ideal is of course full understanding of the interrelated effects of both sets of factors. However, detailed studies1 of each physical factor have produced immediately usable results in commercial coal flotation and are providing the basis for our current work on the effect of chemical factors. Since these detailed studies provided the basis for the present investigation of froth sprinkling, their key results are highlighted here. For example, for a highly floatable bituminous coal, particle floatability was shown to be directly related to the percentage of coal surface available for bubble attachment and inversely related to particle mass. The data also underscored that in a given size range the addition of mineral matter to a particle makes flotation more difficult both by adding to the mass of the particle and by decreasing the amount of coal surface available for bubble attachment. Size also affects particle floatability in that as the size of particles of a given specific gravity increases, mass increases and the ratio between coal surface area and mass of the particle decreases. Flotation tests showed that any recovery of the coarsest particles in a coal feed is accompanied by progressively higher recovery of finer and finer particles. Consequently, fine high-specific-gravity particles are recovered with the coarse good coal. As a result, when the entire 14 mesh x 0 size range is processed by froth flotation, the good coarse coal is contaminated with high-specific-gravity fines. It is the small quantities of these fines that must be rejected from the froth product if flotation efficiency is to be increased above its present level. These principles and findings, together with work by Professor V. I. Klassen,' led to the froth sprinkling investigation reported in this paper. Working with Russian coals, Klassen had shown that froth sprinkling washes loosely held refuse particles from the froth and compensates for the water lost in the upper froth layers and increases its stability. As a result, the coal particles are retained in the froth and the loss of coarse coal from the froth is prevented. Decreases in ash of 0.1% to 1.5% were reported by Klassen. Working with a 28 mesh x 0 American coal, the author of the present paper found that single-stage flotation coupled with froth sprinkling produced a product comparable to that obtained by the more expensive method of roughing and cleaning.3 The investigation reported in the present paper expanded study of the effect of froth sprinkling to include each of the standard size fractions of a bituminous coal. The main findings are as follows: (1) For those size fractions between 48 mesh and 150 mesh, froth sprinkling produces a marked reduction in both sulfur and ash. In the case of those sizes coarser than 48 mesh, while this reduction is not as significant, the additional benefit of shorter retention time is still a plus for froth sprinkling. Furthermore, when froth sprinkling is coupled with normal fast flotation, the product purity approaches that obtained by starvation reagent feeding, i.e., gradual feeding of flotation reagent to float the recoverable coal from the pulp slowly in several increments.
