The depletion of higher grade mineral reserves will accelerate the trend toward production from progressively larger and lower grade deposits. The discovery of adequate reserves of leaner ores will require the development of improved exploration techniques with a greater depth range. The principal challenges to the Canadian mining industry are to find the mineral resources required to meet fast growing world demand and to develop mining methods and equipment to ensure production costs which will strengthen our position in export markets in the face of in-creasing world competition. The challenges cannot be met without intensive efforts to attract more technical men to the industry and to improve their training.

"TEXADA Island is situated in the Strait of Georgia, about 100 miles northwest of Vancouver. The property of Texada Mines Ltd. lies on the southwest coast of the northern end of the Island. A part of the ""Sunshine Coast,"" the climate is moderate, with about 30 inches of rain during winter months and relatively dry summers. Texada has been shipping high-grade magnetite concentrate continuously since 1952 to Japanese ore buyers. In 1959, a 3,000-foot tunnel was driven just above sea level to explore the possible downward extension of known orebodies then being mined by open pit. In January of 1961, because the open-pit operations had a limited life, C. C. Huston and Associates were brought in as mining consultants to do a feasibility study on the possibility of going underground for production. This study was completed in March, 1961. With the completion of the report, the Company went to Japan seeking a ,long-term contract to justify the capital outlay necessary for setting up an underground operation. Concurrently, underground diamond drilling revealed more ore, and the Company planned some modifications to the concentrator for increasing the copper recovery. By November, 1961, a ten-year contract was signed with Japanese ore buyers for the sale of 450,-000 long tons of concentrates beginning in October, 1963. Since that time, the Company has built its own 65 000-ton ore carrier and an additional three-year contract has been negotiated, with an annual tonnage increase of from 450,000 to 550,000 tons."

A comparison is presented of coal pyrolysis at temp¬eratures ranging from 4090 to 497°C and thermal dissolution of coal in tetralin at temperatures ranging from 350° to 450,°C, both utilizing a Utah high-volatile bituminous coal. The initial coal pyrolysis reactions are second order with an enthalpy of activation of 35.6 kcal per mole. The fraction of total product yield produced under second order conditions ranges from 67% at 409°C to 96% at 497°C. The process then gradually deteriorates to a first order reaction in the later stages with enthalpy of activation of 4.1 kcal, per mole. The initial reactions of solution of coal in tetralin are second order with an enthalpy of activation of 28.8 kcal per mole. The fraction of total product produced under second order conditions ranges from 63% at 350°C' to 94% at 450°C. The dissolution process then gradually changes to first order in the later stages with enthalpy of activation of 15.6 kcal per mole. A model is presented which relates the two processes and explains, the significance of the above similarities.

X-ray fluorescence analytical techniques are fairly well established in the mining and metallurgical industries. In recent years, instruments utilizing radioactive isotopes have been developed which, owing to their more compact size, greater reliability and independence of substantial power supplies, are often preferred to X-ray tube installations. Analyses can now readily be carried out in the field, on the factory floor and in otherwise difficult locations. This paper describes many examples of radioisotope X-ray fluorescence for the analysis of metallic minerals, finished metals and alloys and also for the continuous measurement of metallic coatings, such as tin and zinc, on steel. Radiation scatter techniques are also described for certain analyses and for thickness and density measurements.

The model developed by Tuylor for the calculation of Polycrystalline yield strength has been applied to the case of an aggregate hawing a preferred orientation. In general this procedure requires the specification of texture by means of weighting factors applied to specific orientations. The problem to which the model has been applied is that of the yield-strength aniso-tropy of cold-rolled aluminum whose rolling texture was described as a combination of (110)[112] and (311) [112] In this case yield-strength anisotropy is defined by the rutio of yield strength measured at an angle 8 to the rolling direction to that measured along the rolling direction. The method of calculation of yield-strength ratio as a function of ? is described and the results show good agreement with experimental values. The orthotropic yield criterion suggested by Hill has been applied to the results and the strain ratio R also calculated as a function of ?. This has been compared with calculations using the method suggested by Elias, Heyer, and Smith which does not exhibit suck good agreement with observation. one deficietlcy of the method presented is that the strain ratios used by are those applying to iso-Irobic materials. The method should therefore be reg-clrded only as a first abbroximation to the prediction of anisotropy. THE problem of calculating the stress-strain characteristics of polycrystalline aggregates from the properties of single crystals has attracted attention for a number of years. The most important contributions to this study have been those due to: Sachs,' Cox and sopwith,2 Taylor,3 Kochendorfer,4 Batdorf and Budiansky,5 Calnan and Clews,6 Bishop and Hill,7,8 Kocks,9 Budiansky, Hashin, and sanders, 10 Kroner,11 Cyzak, Bow, and payne, 12 Budiansky and Wu,13 and Lin.14 While the earlier work has been largely superseded, recent developments tend to support Taylor's solution" within the restriction imposed by his assumptions. The essential features of Taylor's approach were: 1) the material is rigid-plastic; 2) each grain experiences the same strain components as the aggregate as a whole (the problem was that of uniaxial deformation with principal strain components in the ratio 3) all regions of each grain deform uniformly; 4) work hardening occurs equally on all slip systems. While Bishop and Hill7 have generally validated this approach, there has been some criticism offered. Kocks? as pointed out that since multiple slip must occur the single-crystal data must be determined from orientations arranged such that polyslip takes place. Boas and Hargreaves,15 and others, have shown experimentally that the strain distribution within grains is not uniform, the strains in the vicinity of grain boundaries being less than those in the center of the grains. Both of these criticisms can be largely offset by the suitable choice of single-crystal critical shear stress. However, for the problem analyzed below, the critical shear stress is not directly used and, consequently, these criticisms lose their importance. The more recent contributions have attempted to obtain a more complete analysis by considering an elas-toplastic material and considering interactions between grains of differing orientations. Lin14 has considered the early stages of yielding for a polycrystalline aggregate having specific regions of defined slip plane orientations. On the other hand, Budiansky and Wu13 have allowed for these interactions for randomly disposed grain orientations and have calculated the polycrystalline stress-strain curves for crystals exhibiting either elastic-ideally plastic or kinematic hardening characteristics. This work has shown that yielding commences when the macroscopic stress is 2.2 times the critical shear stress for slip in a single crystal (7,). The yield stress-strain curve then rises becoming asymptotic to a value of 3.072 7,. This is close to the value obtained by Bishop and Hill (3.06) in their confirmation of Taylor's method. This, of course, is to be expected since, at large strain values, the elastic strains are negligible and the rigid-plastic model is satisfactory. The results of Budiansky and Wu indicate that the result obtained by Taylor is 7.7 pct high at a plastic strain which is two times the elastic strain at the initiation of yield. By defining the anisotropy in terms of relative values, the ratio of yield strength at orientation ?, to that measured in the rolling direction, the effect of the discrepancy in Taylor's solution is considered to be of lesser consequence. Therefore, it is anticipated that an analysis based on Taylor's solution, which can be quite straightforward, should provide a reasonable estimation of the anisotropy of materials having a preferred orientation texture. OUTLINE OF TAYLOR'S METHOD In fee metals there are four possible slip planes (the octahedral planes) and in each there are three possible slip directions (the edges of the octahedron), that is a total of twelve possible slip systems. von Mises16 has shown that at least five independent slip systems must become operative in each grain of the polycrystalline aggregate in order to preserve continuity of strain. With this geometrical requirement as basis and the assumptions previously listed, Taylor determined the operative slip systems for a number of orientations of the tensile stress axis specified in the unit stereographic triangle. The request to participate on your theme panel was accepted with some reluctance but indeed as an honor. My subject was outlined to cover 'Energy Resources - both nuclear and conventional' as related to your theme 'Minerals - Treasure Trove of the West'. This is indeed quite an order and I hope you will forgive me for concentrating mainly on the nuclear-uranium portion with brief references only to conventional fuels some of which will be covered in detail later in your conference. In regard to Uranium, I am speaking on the fringe of the area containing half the uranium reserves in your country and no doubt to many who are very conversant with knowledge of these resources. Nevertheless since our two countries have been very closely allied in both nuclear developments and uranium supplies I hope an exchange of information may be mutually beneficial. Concentration on the nuclear fuel resources is I hope understandable as nuclear energy is the coming source of power which will augment the rapid demand in the industrialized countries and provides hope for economic power in many of the more underdeveloped countries. The situation regarding conventional fuel resources is more widely known and their expanding future revolves around production cost reductions, research into diversified uses, plus more assurance of imports from countries less effected by international controversies determining export policies.

While costs of most commodities and services have increased markedly over the past 25 years, the cost of electricity has steadily declined. One of the reasons for this price decline is the improved efficiencies of generating plants which is shown in Fig. 1. 1,2 Another reason for this is the decline in coal production costs. Efficiencies for the best plant increased from about 32 percent in 1540 to about 40 percent in 1962 and then decreased slightly to 38 percent in 1965. The increase in efficiency for all plants (US average) has been even more notable, progressing from less than 15 percent in 1940 to about 32 percent in 1965. The chief reason for the improved efficiency is the change in operating steam temperatures. These increased about 12 F per year until 1200 F was reached in 1962. At this high temperature excessive corrosion of super-heater and reheater tubes was experienced and steam temperatures were dropped back to 1050 F and even 1000 F in some cases. To successfully compete against other energy sources for generating electricity, this corrosion problem must be solved so that operation at higher temperatures and thus, increased efficiencies will be possible.

Crows Nest Industries Limited adopted roof bolting in 1963 to improve roof control and to extend continuous miner utilization in one mine. Bolting was held back because anchorage tests gave inconsistent results. The time lapse between mining and bolting was suspected as a cause, and so a test entry was driven and sections of it were bolted as part of the work cycle in addition to the normal timbering. This paper presents the results of the instrumentation of test entries and discusses the utilization of the data to improve mining procedure.

With the passage of recent national and state legislation aimed at tighter regulation of air pollution and smoke control, attention has been focused on a problem which has long confronted the coal industry--the disposal of coal waste with its inadvertent ignition. Even as recent as 1935, a decision from the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas confirms the stand taken on control of burning coal refuse disposal areas. "The uncontroverted testimony is that there is no feasible method of operating a coal mine without a gob pile on the surface, as no use has ever been found for this troublesome by-product of mining; that every large coal mine has a large gob pile close to its tipple; that sooner or later these piles all ignite through spontaneous combustion; that practically every large mine in Western Pennsylvania has a burning gob pile, and that there is no known means of averting such a fire." 19* As a result of the past "no regulation policy," there are presently on the order of 500 burning refuse banks, of which 213, 142, and 49 are found in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky, respective¬ly. 18 Many of these refuse banks have burned for 40 years or more; many others may continue burning for a like period. It is estimated that the annual emission from these smoldering piles approaches 183,000 tons of pollutents which may produce many deleterious effects on the populace, property and vegetation in the proximity to the sources.16 To date, little progress has been made in alleviating the pollution from the currently burning refuse banks; however, numerous investigators who are researching the causes of ignition, as well as preventative disposal techniques (refuse compaction, layering and crushing to finer sizes) have met with some success in handling the newly discarded coal refuse.

Mr. Chairman; honored guests; ladies and gentlemen: The subject assigned me today by your committee, according to the program, is "the mineral industry and the public land law I have preferred to title the talk, "you can't mine here", for that is the essence of the message we, as an industry, have been getting from so many agencies of the federal government for so long. And, unfortunately, we can expect to hear the same message even louder and clearer -- with increasing frequency in future, unless. Every segment of the industry devotes the necessary time, energy and creative thought to combat successfully the forces that are writing and broadcasting that message. I said that agencies of the federal government are sending the message --- and this, of course, is true, the forest service, for example, and some bureaus of the department of the interior as well as others have appeared in recent years to be abiding by a policy designed to block mineral entry to as much of the public lands as possible and to wipe out existing mining claims.

This paper will deal with on-site maintenance welding using the stick electrode, electric arc process. It is primarily concerned with the underlying principles, the application of which, or the lack of such application, governs the success or failure of the operation. It will discuss first the base metal or item to be welded, including the field identification of its weld-ability and the determination of the procedures to be followed. Second, it will outline heat effects and the interrelation between heat applied as part of a welding operation and heat deliberately applied as part of a heat treating cycle, stressing the fact that in welding the same basic principles are effective. The third consideration will be weld metal and its control of both composition and properties. Last, but not least, distortion, shrinkage and residual stress will be considered and practical means for minimizing their adverse effects outlined.

Interconnections for integrated circuits operating at rnicrowaue frequencies rzust be formed as microwave transmission lines. This paper describes the fabrication of one type of microwave transmission line known as microstrip, which can be fabricated on momlithic integvated circuits by deposition of 0.1- to 2.0-mil-thick metal and dielectric films. A microstrip line consists of a narrow conducting strip separated from a gvound plane by a dielectric material. Thick films of good conducting materials are required for low loss at high frequencies. Vacuum-evaporation methods for depositing aluminum and silver films are described. The narrow conducting strip forming the top conductor is defined by photoresist-etching techniques after the thick rnetal film is deposited. Gold plating with a photoresist-masking technique is also used to forrrz thick metal conductors. The microstrip dielectric layer is formed by deposition of suitable dielectric films 0.1 to 2.0 mils thick. Several deposition techniques were investigated. Electron-beam evaporation of quartz is described. Electrical characteristics of deposited microstrip lines at microwave frequencies are included and the microwave power attenuation as a function of conductor and dielectric thickness is given. It is concluded that the deposition of microstrip transmission lines is a practical way to achieve low-loss interconnections in monolithic integrated circuits. CONNECTIONS between devices in low-frequency and digital circuits are usually made by connecting the devices with a length of conductor such as a metal lead oi- a wire. If this method were applied to microwave integrated circuits, the reactance of the connection due to the series inductance and parasitic capacitance would be very high, in fact too high to permit successful circuit operation. In addition, resonance and antenna effects would occur at high frequencies, especially when the connections approach the wavelength.' Connections which are sections of transmis- sion line will overcome these difficulties. The electromagnetic field is confined to the volume of the transmission line, parasitic effects are not present, and circuit design utilizes familiar transmission-line techniques. TRANSMISSION LINES One type of transmission line geometrically adaptable to integrated circuits is known as micrstri. A microstrip line can be generated from a coaxial line as shown in Fig. l(a). The outer conductor of the coaxial line is distorted into an ellipse (b) and finally separated at the extremities of the ellipse to form the strip transmission line shown in (c). One of the ground planes is then removed, leaving a conducting ground plane and a narrow conducting strip separated by a dielectric. "This paper deals with the methods used by Quebec Cartier Mining Company in the evaluation and selection of new haulage equipment and in increasing the productivity of the existing fleet.Selection of new equipment is based upon the comparison, for each model under consideration, of the capital investment required and the estimated operating costs and production rate. The calculation of the production rate is based on a widely used estimating procedure. Actual operating conditions considered in the method include: payload, haul distance, road grade, rolling resistance, loading and dumping times, and operational efficiency. A digital computer is used to handle the large volume of repetitive calculations required. Where a fleet of haulage equipment includes trucks of different size and performance characteristics, the problem exists of assigning each truck type to the different working locations to minimize total cost. Linear programming can be used in the solution of this problem."

Following considerable experience with the beneficiation of Wabana iron ore by standard methods, a study was made of the benefits to be obtained by semi-reduction. The basis of the laboratory program was an extensive mineralogical and liberation investigation which guided subsequent work. Partial reduction and beneficiation on a laboratory scale was carried out on lump ore and fines. The reduced ore was magnetically concentrated and the concentrated fines were briquetted. Data are presented on reducibility, sizing vs reduction rate, magnetic cobbing and separation, and the elimination of phosphorus. Past work is reviewed briefly and comments are made on the relation of laboratory to pilot-scale tests.

This paper presents the history of uranium procurement and demand, and takes a look at future requirements. The three basic conclusions drawn are: (1) the productive capacity of former and existing producers whose operations may be profitably reactivated is insufficient to meet demand projected beyond 1975; (2) reserves in the $5 -$10 price range do not provide the flexibility to sustain production at the high rates required in the late 1970's; and (3) only higher prices can overcome these deficiencies, as this would provide sufficient inducement for the industry to explore for and develop new reserves and productive capacity.

With silica making up more than 27% of the earth's crust, its oxides amounting to more than 59% of the igneous rocks and quartz the most prevalent of the main free oxides, it follows that the mining engineer' is in constant contact with quartz, mainly as a gangue material to be removed as completely and economically as possible and sometimes as a valuable mineral to be purified' for the chemical,, ceramic or glass industries. Water scarcity under desert or semi-arid conditions, dwindling water supplies and difficulties of wet waste disposal in many locations and trouble from freezing in arctic locations make dry benefication more and more desirable. Advances made during the last few years in apparatus and methods and a steadily increasing knowledge of solid state physics are widening the field open to the economical application of electrostatic separation.

In Part I, a study of pressure build-up curves calculated for conditions under which both oil and gas flow led to the conclusion that the presence of a dispersed free gas phase in an oil reservoir must be taken into consideration to estimate accurately average reservoir pressure and permeability from build-up curves. Familiar methods based on the assumption of no free gas can be extended to the two-phase case by using total compressibility and mobility in place of single-fluid compressibility and mobility. These methods give correct values for average pressure and permeability when gas saturation is small. Errors become larger as the gas saturation increases. However, for the use to which the results will be put, the methods are satisfactory for reservoir engineering purposes. An improved method of calculating the performance of depletion-type reservoirs is presented in Part 2. Because the mathematical relationships describing simultaneous flow of oil and gas are quite involved. simplifying assumptions are made to provide means of obtaining approximate solutions of reasonable accuracy. One such approximate method now in use is the constant-GOR solution. It involves the assumption that at any instant, the ratio of total gas flow rate (both free and disolved) to oil flow rate is the same at all points in the reservoir. The approach is not applicable unless the free gar saturation in the reservoir is everywhere greater than the critical gas saturation. This paper presents a modification which, by avoiding the constant-GOR assumption, makes the method applicable to all reservoir conditions, and so far appears to be more accurate than the constant-GOR solution and to he comparable in required compuctation time. PART I— BUILD-UP CURVE ANALYSIS INTRODUCTION Pressure build-up characteristics of shut-in wells have been used for many years by engineers to evaluate average reservoir pressure, effective permeability thickness of the pay section, effectiveness of well completion (skin effect) and reservoir size. A number of methods of analysis have appeared from time to time."" Without exception, these methods are based on the assumption that the reservoir contains but one fluid of constant small compressibility and constant mobility. It has been suggesteda" hat these single-fluid methods may be applied to data from reservoirs containing both oil and gas by substitution of some effective total properties of the multiphase system in place of the corresponding single-phase properties. The present investigation was undertaken primarily to evaluate this approach. METHOD A number of theoretical build-up curves were calculated for conditions of two-phase flow, under the assumption of certain reservoir and fluid properties, and were analyzed by single-fluid methods with appropriate total compressibility and total mobility values for the corresponding single-fluid properties. Results of the analyses were compared with the assumed conditions. The theoretical build-up curves were completed by procedures similar to those of West, Garvin and Sheldon." Since these calculations require a considerable amount of computer time, an attempt was made to derive an approximate calculation method. The attempt was unsuccessful for calculating build-up curves, but the effort did result in a new approximate method of calculating the performance of solution gas drive reservoirs, which appears to be an improvement over the constant-GOR method" used previously (see Part 2). The West, Garvin and Sheldon calculations involved the following assumptions: (1) the reservoir is circular and completely bounded, with a completely penetrating well at its center; (2) the porous medium is uniform and iso-tropic, with a constant water saturation at all points; (3) gravity effects can be neglected; (4) compressibility of rock and water can be neglected; (5) the composition and equilibrium are constant for oil and gas; (6) the same pressure exists in both the oil phase and the gas phase; and (7) no afterproduction occurs, i.e., the well is shut in at the sand face for build-up. These assumptions make it possible to describe two-phase flow of oil and gas by the partial differential equations:

"The free-world production of columbium ore concentrates has doubled in the last five years. St. Lawrence Columbium and Metals. Corporation has contributed largely to this expansion, its production rate increasing from 720 tons of concentrates per year in 1961 to 2 200 tons in 1965.To follow the normal market development, the Company initiated an engineering study aimed at establishing the most economical mining methods, thus permitting it to increase its milling rate from 1,000 tpd in 1964 to 2,000 tpd in 1967 and possibly to 3,000 tpd in 1968. The results of this study pointed out the advantages to be gained in converting from an open pit to an under-ground operation. This paper describes how the mining engineering department has successfully developed ""stopes"" from the walls of its No. 2 open pit, in order to assure continuity of its operation during the interval required to develop its underground mine."

The successful application of ther mo compression lead bonding to semicondtctor or thin-film electronic devices depends on the establishment of the associated parameters. The quality of a thermocompression bond is primarily related to the process temperature and bonding force. A technique using the coelyicient of friction is presented that both reduces the time necessary for determining optimum parameter values and increases the accuracy of the results. Modern theories of the friction process are used to develop mathernatical expressions for shear and tensile bond strengths in terms of friction measurements. A further application of the pararneter-deterlnination technique concerns the measurement of surface contamination that may affect thermocompression bonding. In spite of the extensive use of thermocompression bonding, adequate methods for determining the bonding parameters have not been utilized. The quality of the weld depends on the temperature, force, and time used. There is a definite value or range of values for each parameter which assures an optimum weld. The process now generally used to obtain these values is to make several weld samples at each parametric setting, determine the mean pull strength, and relate the maximum consistent strength to optimum weld conditions. This could involve a very large number of test samples if a thorough search of each parameter were made. Experience and prior knowledge can reduce this number somewhat by limiting the investigation to a range known to contain the correct value, but the time and effort involved are still objectionable. The problems associated with thermocompression bonding of interconnecting leads to semiconductor or thin-film devices can be alleviated by the application of a new technique for establishing the process parameters. Obtaining the correct temperature, force, and duration to assure an optimum bond is accomplished by a simple measurement of the coefficient of friction. This approach increases the accuracy of parameter determination and greatly reduces the time necessary to complete the process. The approach made can be better understood by analyzing the principles of adhesion and friction on which thermocompression bonding depends. When two flat polished surfaces are placed together, the area of actual contact is much less than the apparent area determined by the over-all dimensions of the surface. This is because the microscopic surface is covered with projections which prevent uniform contact. Careful measurements of the electrical resistance across the contacting surfaces indicate the actual area may only be 1100,000 of the apparent area.' Because the actual contact area is small, extremely high pressure results from moderate force. This will produce deformation and plastic flow at contact points of the microscopic projections. The process will terminate in the creation of a large number of minute welds formed at extreme pressure and cold-worked to strong, hard bonds. Load removal will generally result in fracture of most of these microbonds because of the residual elastic stresses, unless the materials are soft.
