Exploration of the Big Island trona beds by Stauffer Chemical Company started early in 1959. During the intervening time, Stauffer Chemical Company of Wyoming has developed a Large trona mine in this southwestern Wyoming area and has increased the over-all production of soda ash from natural sources by nearly one-half million tons per year. The trona, which is a hydrated sodium bicarbonate mineral, lies some 800 feet into the sedimentary rocks of the Green River formation. Present production is approximately 850,000 tons per year being extracted by means of a room-and-pillar mining system. Conventional coal mining equipment is used with some modification to accommodate local conditions. The mined and crushed ore is hoisted to the surface and processed in an on-site refinery. Refined soda ash is shipped to widely separated locations in covered hopper railraod cars. Construction in progress at Stauffer's plant will double the present capacity.

A high-speed streak camera method for making equation of state measurements (shock and particle velocities) on samples of rock under dynamic load conditions is described. Experimental data are given for tests on 12 samples representing 5 rock types. Analysis of these data shows that the method is practical and that good reproducibility of results can be obtained. The pressure range covered in the tests was from 1 to 50 kilobars.

The wellbore acts as a storage tank during drawdown and build-up testing and causes the sand-face flow rate to approach the constant surface flow rate as a function of time. This effect is compounded if non-Darcy flow (turbulent flow) exists near a gas wellbore. Non-Darcy flow can be interpreted as a flow-rate dependent skin effect. A method for determining the non-Darcy flow constant using this concept and the usual skin effect equation is described. Field tests of this method have identified several cases where non-Darcy flow was severe enough that gas wells in a fractured region appeared to be moderately damaged. The combination of wellbore storage and non-Darcy flow can result in erroneous estimates of formation flow capacity for short-time gas well tests. Fortunately, the presence of the wellbore storage eflect permits a new analysis which can provide a reasonable estimate of formation flow capacity and the non-Darcy flow constant from a single short-time test. The basis of the Gladfelter, Tracy and Wilsey correction for wellbore storage in pressure build-up was investigated. Results led to extension of the method to drawdown testing. If non-Darcy flow is not important, the method can be used to correct short-time gas well drawdown or build-up data. A method for estimation of the duration of wellbore storage effects was developed. INTRODUCTION In 1953, van Everdingen and Hurst generalized results published in their previous paper3 concerning wellbore storage effects to include a "skin effect", or a region of altered permeability adjacent to the wellbore. Later, Gladfelter. Tracy and Wilsey4 presented a method for correcting observed oilwell pressure build-up data for wellbore storage in the presence of a skin effect. The method depended upon measuring the change in the fluid storage in the wellbore by measuring the rise in liquid level. To the author's knowledge, application of the Gladfelter, Tracy and Wilsey storage correction to gas-well build-up has not been discussed in the literature. It is, however, a rather obvious application. Gas storage in the wellbore is a conlpressibility effect and can be estimated easily from the measured wellbore pressure as a function of time. Several approaches to the wellbore storage problem have been suggested. As summarized by Matthews, it is possible to minimize annulus storage volume by using a packer, and to obtain a near sand-face shut-in by use of down-hole tubing plug devices. Matthews and Perrine have suggested criteiia for determining the time when storage effects become negligible. In 1962, Swift and Kiel' presented a method for determination of the effect of non-Darcy flow (often called turbulent flow) upon gas-well behavior. This paper provided a theoretical basis for peculiar gas-well behavior described previously by Smith. Recently, Carter, Miller and Riley observed disagreement among flow capacity k,,h data determined from gas-well drawdown tests conducted at different flow rates for short periods of time (less than six hours flowing time). In the original preprint of their paper, Carter et al. proposed that the discrepancy in flow capacity was possibly a result of wellbore storage effects. Results of an analytical study of unloading of the wellbore and non-Darcy flow were recorded by carter.14 In the final text of their paper, Carter et al.!' stated that they no longer believed wellbore storage was the reason for discrepancy in their kgh estimates. In view of the preceding, this study was performed to establish the importance of non-Darcy flow and well-bore storage for gas-well testing. In the course of the study. a reinspection of the previous work by van Everdingen' and Hurst' was made, and the basis for the Gladfelter, Tracy and Wilsey' wellbore storage correction was investigated and extended to flow testing. WELLBORE STORAGE THEORY As has been shown by Aronofsky and Jenkins,11-12 Matthews," and others, flow of gas can often be approximated by an equivalent liquid flow system. The following developnlent will use liquid flow nomenclature to simplify the presentation. Application to gas-well cases will be illustrated later. First, we will use the van Everdingen-HursP treatment of wellbore storage in transient flow to establish (1) the duration of wellbore storage effects, and (2) a method to correct flow data for wellbore storage. DURATION OF WELLHORE STORAGE EFFECTS When an oil well is opened to flow. the bottom-hole pressure drops and causes a resulting drop in the liquid level in the annulus. The Mission By-Products Plant at the Mission Concentrator of the American Smelting and Refining Company, some 20 miles south of Tucson, Arizona in the Twin Buttes mining area, has been in operation slightly over a year. The plant produces a molybdenite concentrate a copper concentrate and, at times, a zinc concentrate. An intensive test program of over three years was conducted at Mission to make the recovery of molybdenum economic. Briefly it was found necessary to make a scavenger concentrate in the copper mill before it was possible to recover economic quantities of molybdenite. By so doing there were resulting additional recoveries of copper, silver and zinc. This program resulted in the design and construction of the existing plant. A paper by the authors discussing the test work and the design was presented at the, October 1965 meeting of the American Mining Congress in Las Vegas, Nevada, by Mr. Wayne Bossard.

The Bureau of Mines developed a new method for the determination of oxides of nitrogen in diesel exhaust gas. The procedure, a modification of the Saltzman method, uses a NO2 absorbent for the diesel exhaust gas; the colorless absorbent becomes purple on contact with N~. When used properly this procedure gives satisfactory results in 2 hours, whereas the standard phenoldisulfonic acid method required approximately 8 hours. The new method is not satisfactory for determination of oxides of nitrogen in the overrich fuel to air ratio range.

This report analyzes the successful low-pressure gas drive in the Keener sand of the Bonds Creek oilfield, Pleasants and Ritchie Counties, W. Va.) and predicts its future performance. Core analysis from two wells and electrical and radioactivity logs were used to evaluate the reservoir characteristics. Production records over a 37-year period indicate that over 240,000 barrels of oil have been produced from the Keener sand by low-pressure gas injection. Decline-curve analysis shows that 165,000 additional barrels should be recovered from 108 acres of productive sand by continuing this secondary-recovery method.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated equipment and procedures for drop-weight testing of explosive liquids as prescribed by Test 4) a widely used method. It was demonstrated that partial ignitions, originally designated as negative results, should be designated positives; it was also shown that wear or erosion of the sample cups and the type of mount used for the apparatus had important effects on the results. Relative sensitivity as measured by Test 4 was found to vary slightly with temperature. The Bureau also designed a fixed 2-kg weight and associated electromagnetic release, which subsequently were incorporated as standard in a revision of Test 4. The original concept that the test involves only adiabatic compression was found to be an oversimplification; an alternate mechanism for the initiation process is proposed in which due consideration is given to the effects of cavitation and microjets.

The truly educated man is better prepared to meet the challenge of the times. This challenge can be either beneficial or harmful depending upon one s orientation, Certainly man can no longer continue in the way of his father or even in the manner of his own previous experience as he seeks self-fulfillment, unless he is willing to sacrifice inner integrity--unless he is willing to compromise self-determination and self-expression. He must make a choice as society moves rapidly into high gear in the areas of automation and cybernetics. Industry, a unit of society, has a high stake in meeting this challenge, The better prepared and more mature its personnel, the better the end result as it attempts to meet the challenge. It therefore has a vital concern in proper training of such personnel, that their contribution will be of maximum quality. The specialized training required demands a broad liberal arts background which gives the individual a wider perspective upon which to base judgment. This greatly aids his development as he enters graduate school or goes directly into industry. In either case, his value to industry is enhanced. It would seem that the small liberal arts college provides the best environment for such a program, Consideration of several factors will, I hope, throw some light on the severity of the problem.

Over one half billion tons of coal per year is scalped, classified, deslimed, drained and rinsed, dewatered and final sized on rotary, vibrating, shaking or stationary screens. The vibrating screen is the industry work horse and performs the bulk of the screening functions in the coal preparation plant. There are two major types of brute force mechanical vibrating screens used in coal preparation plants: (1) the two-bearing one-shaft inclined screen and (2) the four-bearing two-shaft horizontal screen. Both of these types are familiar to coal producers.

The Bureau of Milts studied repetitive batch electrowinning of molybdenum from molybdic oxide ) to determine the effects upon the electrolyte life, purity of metal product , and overall cell performance. The electrolyte consisted of 54.0 weight-percent sodium tetraborate (Na2B407), 23.6 weight-percent sodium chloride (NaC1), 14.9 weight-percent sodium fluoride (NaF), and 7.5 weight-percent Mo03. The feed materials were pure and technical-grade Mo03. Electrolysis was conducted at l,000° C in a graphite cell in an atmosphere of air and carbon oxides. Electrolyte degradation did not occur during repetitive winning of molybdenum from pure Mo03 in an 8-day (5,400-ampere-hour) period of operation. Electrowon metal contained <0.1 percent total impurities. The electrode configuration is a key factor in the direct conversion of technical-grade Mo03 to metal by repetitive cyclic electrolysis. The best configuration found was a cathodic crucible and a central anode. Metal purity of 99.8 percent and a current efficiency of 91 percent were maintained until the combined impurity buildup the electrolyte reached 4.7 percent silicon, l.0 percent aluminum, and 0.6 percent iron. One pound of molybdenum was produced per 1.5 pounds of solvent salts employed. About 25 percent of the initial NaCl and NaF contents of the electrolyte were lost owing to volatilization and crucible penetration.

"The Lake Dufault orebodies were discovered by deep surface diamond drilling. When a reasonable amount of outline drilling had been completed, the decision to go into production was made. The fact that shaft sinking, lateral development, the detailing of the orebodies and stope preparation were to be carried out as rapidly as possible necessitated very close scheduling.After a study of varions possible mining methods, an open-stoping system using long-hole blasting was chosen. Diesel-powered Transloaders were selected for the mucking and transportation of ore from the drawpoints to the orepass.At the time of writing, the choice of mining method appears to have been fully justified, although more time will be required to arrive at true operating costs and efficiencies."

It is believed that many of the problems encountered in the operation of gold cyanidation plants are difficult to resolve due to the lack of sufficient and reliable in-formation regarding the variations and actual values of operating variables at any given time. The application of instruments to monitor the more important variables in the cyanidation process should result in more efficient plant operation and a better understanding of the process. The use of pH and conductivity sensing devices for alkalinity measurements, a monitor to determine the dissolved oxygen content of plant solutions, a continuous cyanide titrator and sonic control of grinding circuits are discussed. Although the discussion is oriented toward the cyanide process, much of the paper is applicable to other ore treatment operations.

Autoignition temperatures and limits of flammability of nine halogenated hydrocarbons in atmospheres of air, oxygen, and nitrogen tetroxide were measured in a modified standard autoignition apparatus and limit-of-flammability apparatus previously developed at the Bureau of Nines. Of the nine halogenated hydrocarbons investigates--bromochloromethane, bromotrifluoromethane, bromochlorodifluoromethane, 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane, 1-bromo-l-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane, dibromodifluoromethane, l,2-dibromo-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoro-ethane, 1,1,1,3,3-pentachlorotrifluoropropane, and l-bromo-2,4-dichloro-1,1,2, 3,3,4-hexafluorobutane--two formed flammable mixtures with nitrogen tetroxide and six with oxygen; none formed flammable mixtures with air. Three of the halogenated hydrocarbons formed no flammable zones with any of the three oxidizing atmospheres. For those halogenated hydrocarbons that supported combustion in oxygen atmospheres, explosion pressures developed during constant-volume burning of mixtures near the middle of the flammable zone were observed to range from about 6 psig for dibromodifluoromethane to 158 psig for 1-bromo-1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane. In all cases, the calculated burning velocities of these mixtures were less than 8 in/sec.

An attempt has been made in this investigation to define the conditions under which ammonium nitrate (AN) might detonate as a result of involvement in fire. The initiation of detonation by shocks derived from explosives or from projectile impact was investigated as a function of temperature and charge diameter. A new technique was devised to investigate the burning of raw and contaminated AN under pressure. No transition, to detonation in AN was obtained in the burning experiments. The critical diameter for detonation of fertilizer-grade AN was found to be quite small when the AN was at temperatures just below melting point; this indicates that initiation of detonation may be less difficult at elevated temperatures but such initiation by gas-phase detonation was shown to be unlikely. Transition from burning to detonation was obtained with AN intimately mixed with fuels that included polyethyl-ene, paper, and fuel oil when these were contained in vessels with restricted vents. However, the experimental results supported by an analytical study indicate that the initiation of detonation in AN from fire exposure in normal storage and from transportation incidents is quite improbable. The detonation of AN in recent incidents more likely may have resulted from the effects of adjacent explosions.

The Bureau of Mines prepared submicron tungsten powder by reducing tungsten hexachloride with hydrogen. The particle diameters of the resulting tungsten powders ranged from 0.015 to 0.046 micron. Within the limits of the variables investigated, no clear-cut correlation was found between process conditions and final size of the powder. Oxygen was the major contaminant in the product; being present both as an adsorbed gas and as suboxides of tungsten. Studies showed that the powder yielded compacts of approximately 45 per-cent of theoretical density when compacted mechanically. Low-temperature sintering produced more rapid densification in these compacts than in compacts prepared from conventional powders. Adding up to 20 percent ultrafine powder to conventional tungsten powder caused an increase in density upon compaction with maximum densification occurring at approximately 12 percent ultrafine powder.

A method for determining average reservoir pressure is presented, which is simpler to apply than that devised by Matthews. Brons and Hazebroek. For bounded reservoirs, identical results are obtained if stabilized-flow conditions prevail. The present method yields inferior results in the transient state. The method can, with a slight modification, also be used for water-drive reservoirs. INTRODUCTION In the method proposed by Matthews, Brons and Haze-broek&apos; for determining average reservoir pressure in a multi-well reservoir, the cumulative production (the production time of each well) enters twice: once when the buildup is plotted against In (t + t)/At to arrive at p*, and a second time when the correction, p*-p is determined with one of the several formulas for differently shaped drainage areas. Once a steady state has been attained, however, the previous production history should be immaterial. The same pressure distribution could have been arrived at after different cumulative productions of the individual wells. In principle, therefore, it should be possible to determine average pressures without referring to cumulative productions. In the following paragraphs an expression is presented for the difference between the pressure in a producing well and the average pressure of its drainage area. Then the build-up time needed to overcome this difference is indicated. CASE OF A CIRCULAR DRAINAGE AREA AND A CENTRAL WELL PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION BEFORE SHUT-IN The general differential equation of radial flow (see Muskat, Eq. 10.2) may be written In the steady state, the rate of production of the well is equal to the rate of expansion of the fluid contained in the the drainage area; thus

I would like to congratulate the authors on an interesting paper and, in particular, on their justification of the use of superposition in treating gas wells. They state, however, that no theory has previously been developed lor treating the variable rate drawdown case. In a paper published a few years ago by my colleagues and myself, a method is described which allows a constant rate drawdown curve to be derived for any well. regardless of real rate variations. This method has the great advantage that it is not necessary to make any assumptions regarding the form or uniformity of the reservoir, and the derivation suggested by the present authors is simply an idealized case of our more general treatment. In the light of several years&apos; experience in the derivation of constant rate drawdown curves: I would like to point out that the method proposed by Odeh and Jones may lead to confusing answers, particularly if applied over an appreciable time interval. The reason is that, if pressures are measured when a well is flowing, non-linearities in plots like Figs. 1 and 2 can arise due to either (1) changes in the skin factor with time and/or flow rate, or (2) an inhomogeneous reservoir. Separation of these two effects is only possible if some of the pressures used in the analysis are measured when the well flow rate is 0 or, in other words. during brief shut-in periods. A computer program is presented to calculate the shape factors and volumes of cells from a potentiometric model, using coordinates of the inter-sections of the stream lines and equal potentials and a few additional coordinates. Shape factors are used in flow computations when the geometry is complicated. The program also includes computer instructions to divide the channels into cells of equal volume and to obtain the shape factor for each of these equal volume cells. An illustrated example using the potentiometric model for the waterflood of a seven-spot well-spacing pattern is presented. The information contained in the report is of value not only to those allied to the subject but also to others, because many of the techniques can be conveniently used in formulating other computer programs.

"Most electromagnetic methods presently used in mining exploration are of the moving source type; i.e., the primary field source is moved simultaneously and in a fixed configuration with the receiver. Of the fixed-source methods, which employ a stationary primary field and a moving receiver, the Turam method is the most effective and has marked advantages over alternative electromagnetic methods. The results are little affected by topographic relief, and a high degree of resolution can be obtained because of the constant relation between source field and investigation area. Another inherent advantage of the Turam configuration is that it provides more favourable dimensional relations. Thus, the primary field attenuates at a much lower rate than in moving-source configurations and, secondly, the method is size sensitive; i.e., conductor size affects the strength of the response, which is not the case with moving-source methods. These factors result in a considerably better potential depth penetration."

Experience with the current version of gallery test 4, in use since 1913 to evaluate the incendivity of permissible explosives in the presence of coal dust, has shown the procedure to have inadequate discrimination. Consequently the Bureau of Mines used the up-and-down method of statistical design to investigate the incendivity of permissible explosives in the presence of coal dust and gas. A suitable device was developed to measure coal dust concentrations in the air-gas mixtures and to disperse the dust in the gallery atmosphere. A proposed testing method which uses suspended shots in a predispersed coal dust-gas-air mixture was evaluated. The new method can discriminate between different explosives with respect to their incendivity. Maximum ignitibility of the coal dust cloud by permissible explosives occurred in the vicinity of 0.3 oz/cu ft. About 10% sodium chloride in permissible explosive formulations had a very significant effect in reducing the probability of igniting coal dust. Bundled charges were more incendive than column charges.
