Coal research and related activities in 1964 by the Bureau of Mines resulted in many advances in the production, preparation, and utilization of this valuable natural resource. Mining research during the year was marked by work on hydraulic mining, coalbed degasification, mine drainage control, mine sealing, strip-mine rehabilitation, and quenching of mine-refuse fires. Bureau research continued to produce information leading to increased safety in underground mining. Such research included roof and rib control via bolting and bonding, pressure monitoring of coal and mine rock during mining operations, and development of safety devices for detecting conditions leading to roof falls. Other safety work was continued on methane detectors, coal-dust suppression, and mine ventilation equipment and techniques. Mine explosion and explosives research, mine equipment and materials, safety rule modernization, and safety education and training of mine workmen were continued. Coal storage and preparation work in 1964 ranged from freezeproofing of lignite for rail shipment, through washability studies of coals and washing equipment, to research on new ways to remove ash and sulfur from coal. Electric power production, which accounts for a major portion of the market for coal, received further study. Unique power generation systems, including coal-burning gas turbine and megnetohydrodynamic generators, were intensively investigated. Conventional power systems were improved through continuation of work on furnace performance, powerplant stack gas purification, and engineering and boiler water service.

Mineral raw materials produced in California, other States, and foreign countries were purchased for consumption in quantities valued at over $60 million at 800 of the 1,200 chemical plants operating in California Fn 1960, according to questionnaires completed by company officials. These and other data received from mineral consumers, producers, dealers, and Government agencies formed the basis for this the first of a series of reports designed to present the intricate features and relationships controlling mineral raw material supply and demand in California industries. The results of this study indicated certain changes in use patterns of minerals in chemical manufacturing; a shift in requirements from metals to nonmetals, from inorganics to organics, from natural to synthetic materials, and from distant to local sources of supply.

Before undertaking to present to you a current analysis of copper, I would like to preface my remarks with a few observations that in themselves have a bearing upon commodity reviews in general. Having sat through a large number of such reviews since first joining the A. I. M. E. nearly forty years ago, I have no illusions about the hazards of the undertaking. If a speaker presents a statistical summary of commodity economics for the last year, most of his audience, having already read at least four commodity summaries on the identical subject, either get up and walk out or fall asleep. Should the latter happen, and were the listener to tumble from his chair and break his neck, obviously the speaker is liable. The subject matter seldom lends itself to histrionics on the part of the speaker so dangers of heart attack in the audience are not too great. Therefore the speaker, in order to retain listener interest, resorts to prophecy. Such venture was undertaken long ago by weather soothsayers, the "harouspex" of Ancient Rome, who generally cut up a sacrificial sheep and after staring at the entrails made their predictions which I understand had a batting average somewhat better than those undertaken on Wall Street based upon Dow Jones averages. Not being a licensed harouspex I cannot undertake predictions. I shall, however, fall back upon the experts.

Advocate Mines Limited came into initial production on June 30, 1963, with an annual capacity in excess of 60,000 tons of high-quality chrysotile asbestos fihres, thus strengthening Canada's position in world production. The history of this development is traced from discovery through initial exploration, financing, orebody delineation and evaluation, pilot-plant production and product evaluation, construction of the plant, construction of deep?-sea shipping facilities, provision for a closed shipping season, and provision for the remoteness and for the lack of services, through to realization of full production capacity. The many unique aspects of the project are given special attention, particularly in the light of the first year of full-capacity operation. The marketing of the products in a highly competitive world market is reviewed, with special emphasis on product evaluation, quality control and the shipping of high-quality products to consumers throughout the world. Since 1909, when an agreement between Minnesota's Tax Commission and the University of Minnesota's School of Mines was worked out, it has been the annual responsibility of the School to evaluate and classify the iron ore deposits within the State. These unique duties of an academic institution have provided School officials with an excellent view of the past, present and probable future of the mining industry in Minnesota as the average grade of iron ore (excluding taconite) * diminishes while at the same time it competes with beneficiated taconites and foreign high-grade ores for use in America's eastern blast furnaces. SYSTEM OF EVALUATION In the latter part of November of each year, the Mining Division of the Department of Taxation makes a preliminary study of the active mines which the Department wants the School of Mines to review. These are discussed with the engineers of the Ore Estimate Division of the School of Mines and with the mining companies. After these discussions, a list of the mines of each of the major operating companies is submitted to the Ore Estimate Division of the School of Mines with the request that these properties be reviewed by them as of the next assessment date (May 1st). At the same time, a letter is sent to the mining companies requesting that they submit to the Division their own estimates on the selected mines operated by them, together with all computations, drill records, maps and cross-sections. The mining companies are re- quested to send in this information during the first half of the year, and, as far as is possible, they have always complied with this request promptly. Much of this information received by the School of Mines is of a confidential nature and is treated as such.

In January, 1964, three years of laboratory and pilot plant test work reached its culmination. The San Manuel Div. of the Magma Copper Co. switched its molybdenite extraction circuit from the sodium hypochlorite-ferrocyanide process to the new process described in this paper. The San Manuel Div. Concentrator of the Magma Copper Co. is located near San Manuel, Ariz., approximately 45 miles northeast of Tucson. The concentrator treats approximately 35,000 tons of ore per day containing about 0.85% copper and 0.025% molybdenite. The San Manuel ore body is a disseminated copper deposit in quartz monzonite and quartz monzonite porphyry. The primary copper mineral is chalcopyrite; minor amounts of chalcocite, bornite and covellite are also present in varying degrees. Pyrite makes up somewhat more than half the sulfide content of the rock. The molybdenite is nearly always found on fracture faces or associated with quartz veinlets.' On January 9, 1964, the sodium hypochlorite-ferrocyanide process that had been used for molybdenite recovery was replaced by the following process: 1) A conditioning step with hydrogen peroxide, sulfuric acid, sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate. 2) A two stage rougher flotation step with stove oil and sodium ferrocyanide. 3) One cleaning step with sodium ferrocyanide. 4) One cleaning step with sodium hypochlorite and potassium ferricyanide. 5) Four cleaning steps with an anti-foam Exfoam 636 and potassium ferricyanide. COPPER CONCENTRATOR Since molybdenite recovery is closely allied with previous steps in the operation, the copper concentrator will be briefly described first. The ore is ground to approximately 5% plus 65-mesh and 65% minus 200-mesh in a two-step grinding circuit consisting of rod mills in open circuit and ball mills in closed circuit with rake classifiers. A straight forward rougher circuit producing only one concentrate is used. The rougher concentrate is combined with the discharge from the regrind ball mills and is then cycloned, with the overflow going directly to the cleaner circuit and the underflow going to the regrind mills. The feed to the cleaner circuit is approximately 90% to 94% minus 325 mesh. The cleaner circuit consists of two stages in which the tailing from the final cleaner stage is returned to the primary cleaner and the primary cleaner tailing is returned to the rod mill discharge at the head of the circuit. Approximately 0.013 lb of the allyl ester of amyl xanthate (S-3302) per ton of ore is added to the rod mills and approximately 0.006 lb of sodium isopropyl xanthate (2-11) per ton of ore is stage added down the rougher banks. The frother used is methyl iso-butyl carbinol (MIBC) and it is added at various points in the grinding and the rougher flotation circuits. Lime is added to the ball mills and/or to the rod mills to maintain the desired pH in the rougher flotation. The rougher flotation has been operated at various pH levels between 10.5 and 11.5. Fuel oil is added in the regrind mills at a loading of approximately 0.01 lb per ton of ore. Factors Which Directly Affect Molybdenite Recovery: It has been found at San Manuel that, to obtain maximum molybdenite recovery, an oily type flotation collector must be added in the grinding circuit. When molybdenite is crystallized in the characteristic platy form, which appears to be the case almost all of the time at San Manuel, its surface has a greater tendency to adhere to oils than water. 2 Of the several oily type collectors available on the market, the allyl ester of amyl xanthate seems to be the best molybdenite promoter. The floatability of San Manuel's molybdenite does not appear to be affected, at least up to a pH of 11.5, by lime. It has been reported that at several plant operations high lime alkaline circuits have adversely affected the molybdenite recovery.3,4 It has been found through microscopic studies that the bulk of the chalcopyrite will float before the molybdenite in both the rougher and cleaner circuits. Meramec Mining Company, owned 50% by St. Joseph Lead Company and 50% by Bethlehem Steel Corporation,- is engaged in the mining, concentrating and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine which is located in the rugged, wooded Missouri Ozarks about 15 miles from the town of Sullivan or 75 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the middle 1950's by the St. Joseph Lead Company during the Company's intensive exploration program to discover new lead orebodies to replace the declining reserves of the famous Southeast Missouri Lead Belt. An airborne magnetometer survey was run by the U.S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Survey and several mining companies, (of which St. Joseph Lead Company was the principal supporter). The survey was published in 1950 and disclosed an anomaly in the vicinity of Pea Ridge. In 1950 test drill holes disclosed that under some 1300 feet of sediments there did exist an iron deposit of probable commercial significance. No further action was taken until 1956 when additional drill holes confirmed beyond reasonable-doubt-that this was a major iron ore discovery.

Temperature distribution as well as position of the solidified front is solved by means of "heat balance integral", for the case of freezing a slab with time-dependent surface temperature. Numerical solutions for the cases of linear variation and exponential decay for surface temperature are given. Application also includes solidification of casting. An increased interest in the heat-transfer problem involving a change of phase has been developed in recent years. Practical problems include solidification of a casting, freezing and thawing of soil, ice formation, and others. Despite the importance of the topic, a literature search reveals relatively few solutions which may be extended to practical problems. Due to mathematical complexity, which comes from the nonlinearity of governing differential equations, exact analytical solutions which have been published are limited to a few cases with simple boundary conditions. Although numerical solutions of these problems have become available after highspeed digital computers were introduced, lack of simple and general methods of programming for computation makes this approach impractical. The case of the semi-infinite slab with constant surface temperature was solved in the 19th century. In honor of Neumann, who first found an analytical solution, this kind of problem is generally referred to as the Neumann solution. As has been shown in Fig. 1, the problem to be analyzed is the freezing of a semi-infinite region (x > 0) which is initially liquid at the melting temperature with the surface (x = 0) maintained at time-dependent temperature. This analysis can be applied to the study of many casting processes where most of the heat removal is essentially unidirectional. "Heat balance integral" which has been used by Goodman1 is employed in this analysis. The concept of "heat balance integral" is to define a quantity, d(t), called the thermal layer. Beyond this thermal layer, for all practical purposes, there is no heat transfer, and the region is at the equilibrium temperature. "Heat balance integral" is obtained by integrating the conduction equation with respect to the space variable over this thermal layer d(t). Choosing some plausible temperature distribution, usually a polynomial or a finite trigonometric series in the space variable, this integral equation becomes an ordinary differential equation, with time as the independent variable, which can be solved by classical methods. The thermal layer and "heat balance integral" are equivalent, respectively, to the boundary-layer thickness and the momentum integral in hydrodynamics. A modern account of Prandtl's concept of the boundary layer and von Karman's momentum integral may be found in Ref. 2. Although the problem considered here has been limited initially to uniform melting temperature, the present method is equally applicable to the case with arbitrary temperature distribution in the liquid. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The physical situation and coordinate system used in the problem to be analyzed are shown in Fig. 1. Notations used are listed in the table of nomenclature. Most miners dream of finding a gold mine sometime during their mining careers, but not very often do such dreams come true. On the tenth day of September, 1962, our dream of finding gold came true when the results of the third drill hole were received. This was undoubtedly one of the most exciting days of our lives. Little did we realize then that this was the beginning of a major discovery destined to became one of the largest gold mines in the country. Discovering and mining gold is not entirely new, however, to Eureka. County a old Lynn Mining District in northeastern Nevada. Since 1900 there has been sporadic activity, mostly consisting of small lode mines and placers. These have produced totally about $300,000; and existence of our orebody would probably have remained unknown had it not been for the United States Geological Survey. The USGS extensively mapped the Roberts Mountain Thrust and published a paper indicating that mineral occurred along this fault and in some places was gold bearing. Utilizing this information, our Newmont Exploration geologists located an area in which: drills were brought in to test their theories. By keeping flexible in our thinning and working, we were able to bring a raw prospect to a producing mine with ore reserves of eleven million tons in a short three-year period.

THE INDUSTRIAL strength and the security of the United States require an adequate, dependable, and continuing supply of raw materials, of which minerals constitute an indispensable segment. With an expanding population, a rising standard of living, and the instability inherent in a constantly changing international situation, the mineral supply outlook is a major national concern. Structures, roads, and machines are built largely of mineral products; the energy to heat the structures and to power the machines is derived mostly from minerals; agricultural out-put is sustained with the aid of mineral fertilizers; and the Nation's economic and military security both are founded ultimately on its ability to obtain and utilize essential metals, nonmetals, and mineral fuels.

Mercury has been used by mankind since prehistoric times. It has been, and is now, widely used in industry and medicine and has unique properties which make direct substitution difficult or impossible. At present its principal uses are for electrical apparatus, control instruments, electrolytic soda preparation, mildew-proofing paints, pesticides, and medical and dental preparations. Deposits of mercury are less common than those of other base and precious metals, but some of the deposits are very large and have been ample to meet the world's past demands. The price of mercury has had many sharp fluctuations, but in general, the limited number of producers has resulted in a more stable price structure than that of many other commodities. The United States has been one of the main producers of mercury, and from 1850 to 1961 produced 3,247,704 flasks. Yearly production since World War II has varied from 4,535 to 38,067 flasks. An estimate of domestic resources of mercury producible at various price ranges was prepared for each mercury mine by combining specific knowledge of mercury mineralization with estimates of potential, based on geologic information and past production history. The sum of the individual estimates for each price range is shown in a table. A parallel estimate of nationwide production potential was made from a study of past price and production relationships. These were analyzed by plotting yearly production figures against the previous year's price, expressed in dollars of constant purchasing power. An equation was fitted to the data by mathematical means and was used to extend the curve into areas of higher than historic prices. Potential production rates at various price levels were taken from this graph. The estimated yearly production rates were used to make an estimate of total potential based on the premise that production rates and reserves have a proportionate relationship. The rate of developing mercury reserves during the period from January 1944 to January 1962 is considered, and it is shown that if this rate can be continued, the mercury resources of the United States, at a constant dollar price of $500 per flask, are adequate to support a production of 60,000 flasks per year for 30 or more years. This publication contains a history and description of the mercury industry in every State which has had production and individual descriptions of all mercury properties which have reported significant production. Accompanying tables give the important facts about all known mercury occurrences.

This paper presents a brief picture of the quality of coal produced in Eastern Canada for use in thermal generating stations. It describes, in particular, the characteristics of coals burned in six power plants -two in New Brunswick and four in Nova Scotia. Each station is dis-cussed in turn, and comments are made on the coals used therein with regards to origin and physical and chemical properties affecting station operation. A table of coal data shows, at a glance, the wide variation in the quality of coals received by these stations from producers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. "The promotion of improved coal quality for thermal generation can benefit our national economy." T HIS is the opening statement in a paper which was presented by Mr. D. A. Pirttinen at the Coal Division's Toronto meeting in April, 1960. In bringing the power engineer's viewpoint to the coal producers' attention, Mr. Pirttinen made a survey of utility steam plants operating in Canada, and the results of this survey formed the basis for his paper, which he titled: "Generating Station Coal Quality.

As part of a program to investigate technology for the extraction of studied HNO3 alumina from abundant domestic ores , the Bureau of Mines leaching of calcined Georgia kaolinitic clay . In this investigation , iron impurities were removed from the aluminum nitrate pregnant leach liquor by solvent extraction , and the purified liquor was evaporated to prepare a suitably concentrated crystallizer feed liquor . Aluminum nitrate nonahydrate was crystallized from the liquor to separate the aluminum from undesirable trace elements and excess water . Continuous crystallization at 40 ° C in a pilot plant vacuum evaporative unit was performed for 5 days to observe the effects of impurity buildup under minimum bleed- stream conditions . Liquor feed rate was 26 lb/h and AAll (( NNOO33 )) 33..99HH22O0 ((AANNNN)) crystal production rate was 17 lb/h . Fe 203 and Cr203 were not effectively separated from the crystals , and P205 , MgO , and K20 impurities must be removed by recrystallization . Other impurities did not excessively contaminate the crystals . Washing the crystals with water or aqueous HNO3 gave an equivalent increase in crystal purity levels by displacing mother liquor . Theoretical equations , applicable to any continuous evaporative crystallization of developed to produce material balances for engineering ANN , were applications .

The recovery of zinc from oxidized zinc minerals by the caustic soda leach and electrolytic or chemical precipitation was investigated . With the exception of willemite ( 2 ZnO • Si0₂ ) oxidized zinc minerals were readily soluble in 180 to 240 g / 1 NaOH solutions . A high- grade zinc flake was recovered electrolytically from solutions which had been treated with zinc powder to precipitate copper and lead . Solutions were recycled to the leach stage with a recovery of about 85 percent of the zinc from an ore containing 21.2 percent zinc . Electrolysis was conducted at a current density of 120 amp / ft2 with a power consumption of about 1.5 kwhr /lb zinc . Zinc was also recovered from leach solutions by dilution of the solutions , carbonation of the solution , or the addition of sulfur to boiling solutions . A dilution ratio of 5 : 1 precipitated 59 percent of the zinc in 9 days . Carbonation of the solutions precipitated the zinc as zinc oxide ( ZnO ) and solutions could be recausticized for recycling . Zinc precipitated as the sulfide with sulfur was easily filtered and washed . Approximately half of the sulfur added to solutions was lost in the form of sodium thiosulfate ( Na S₂03 ) .

As part of its effort to produce cell - grade alumina from clay , the Bureau of Mines investigated the hydrogen chloride gas - sparging crystallization of aluminum chloride hexahydrate ( ACH ) from aluminum chloride liquor , to provide information for optimizing the crystallization operation . Four parameters important in controlling the crystallization of the aluminum chloride hexahydrate and the concentration of impurities , particularly phosphorus and magnesium , in ACH crystals are ( 1 ) aluminum chloride concentration in the feed solution to crystallization , ( 2 ) hydrogen chloride gas flow rate , ( 3 ) temperature , and ( 4 ) concentration of phosphorus and magnesium also in the feed solution . Parameters 1 , 2 , and 3 affect crystal formation . The combined effects are very important because the phosphorus and magnesium concentrate in the crystals during the early stages of crystal growth . Aluminum chloride hexahydrate of cell -grade purity was crystallized from saturated aluminum chloride solutions containing less than 0.003 wt - pct P205 and 0.010 wt - pct Mg0 . Crystallization temperatures less than 60° C decreased crystal purity .

A series of economic evaluations of processes for producing metallurgicalgrade alumina from low- grade aluminous materials is being conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the relative processing costs . The two processes considered in this evaluation are concerned with the recovery of alumina from clay through the formation of ammonium alum . In the first process , dehydrated clay is leached with ammonium bisulfate solution ; in the second process , clay is baked with ammonium sulfate and then leached with water containing a small quantity of sulfuric acid . After the alumina is dissolved by either of these methods , the iron is reduced to the ferrous state to avoid crystallization of ferric sulfate with the alum . The recovery of pure alum requires two crystallization steps . The alum crystals are then redissolved and precipitated with ammonia to produce alumina hydrate , which is calcined to a - alumina . These evaluations are based on published work , and the proposed plants are designed for a capacity of 1,000 tons of alumina per day . The estimated operating cost per ton of alumina for the bisulfate leaching process is $ 117.06 , and for the sulfate baking process , $ 109.26 . Using a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0 , the estimated fixed capital costs , in the same order , are $ 158 million and $ 146 million . Under current economic conditions , these two processes are not competitive with the Bayer process for the production of alumina from bauxite . Since small improvements will not reduce costs sufficiently to approach competitive costs , future research work with these processes should be confined to areas likely to result in major cost reductions .

The primary objective of the research was to grow aluminum borate whiskers or fibers and to determine their properties . Molten salt bath and vapor deposition methods were used for synthesis . Whiskers exceeding 25 mm in length were grown . The best results were obtained by vapor deposition and most of the data presented were determined on whiskers produced by this method of synthesis . Three different aluminum borate compositions ( 4.8A1203 B₂03 , 3.8A1203 B203 , and 2.5A120, B203 ) were identified by X- ray and chemical analyses . The aluminum borates 4.8A1203 B20, X- ray diffraction pattern was indexed . Optical data were obtained on the three aluminum borates . In addition the following whisker properties and growth factors were determined : ideal atmospheric dewpoint for vapor deposition method , near 65 ° F ; temperature range of whisker formation , 1,000 ° to 1,400 ° C for the molten bath method of synthesis , > 1,000 ° to < 1,400 ° C for the vapor deposition method ; whisker growth rates by the vapor deposition method , maximum 12 mm per hour ; raw material vaporization , 50 to 60 percent of the fluoride lost in 1 hour ; tensile strength , maximum obtained 174,162 psi ; melting points , ranged from 1,675 ° to 1,795 ° C.

An evaluation of electrowon tungsten powder was made by comparing its characteristics with conventional hydrogen - reduced tungsten powder . Electrowon tungsten powder was investigated with respect to particle size and shape , apparent density , flow rate , compressibility , green strength , and sintering characteristics . In addition , its chemical purity , absolute density , and purification by melting were determined . Significant findings were higher flow rates and better compressibility than hydrogen - reduced tungsten powder . However , the large particle size peculiar to the electrowinning process effectively prevented conventional sintering to a high- density material . The Bureau of Mines evaluated tthhee feasibility of substituting platinum- coated metals for bulk platinum shapes as a means for conserving platinum . Platinum coatings were prepared using four different methods of electrodeposition , then tested and evaluated . In order for platinum coatings to be useful in process environments , they must be thick , adherent , stress - free , and pore - free . The Bureau evaluated direct - current , current reversal , cathode shielding , and pulsed- current plating techniques for producing a pore-free platinum electrodeposit from a molten cyanide bath . Aqueous corrosion tests of Fe - 10Cr substrates coated with approximately 25 μm of platinum showed that pulse plating yielded the most corrosion- resistant and , hence , the most pore -free coatings . The morphology of coating cross sections was in all cases columnar . The average grain size of pulse -plated deposits was independent of thickness , while all other plating techniques produced grains that increased in size as the coatings became thicker . It is believed that the constant grain size in the pulse - plated deposits resulted from better mass transport during the electrodeposition .
