Conveyors constitute a critical artery, essential to the successful operation of most ore processing plants. Technological progress is permitting the recovery of metal from low grade ores which previously could not be worked economically. Significant in this progress are improved material handling techniques highlighted by the frequent and successful application of conveyors. From the standpoint of the plant manager the successful conveyors are those he never hears about. They continue to economically transport the loads applied to them, requiring only routine maintenance attention. When such conveyors are subjected to closer scrutiny you will find that they have been carefully selected and engineered to perform the required function under the anticipated conditions. Among the primary elements in a conveyor drive are the electrical motor and the speed reducer. The selection of these elements can be aided by the systematic consideration of several factors. These factors which focus attention on the critical operating conditions, will be individually evaluated and their effect upon the selection of the electrical drive system and speed reducer analyzed.

In the early operations of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company, which extended from 1914 to 1926, the ore as mined contained principally sulphide copper minerals, manly chalcocite (Cu2S), This ore was milled in a 20,000-ton concentrator and the copper was recovered as a flotation concentrate which, was smelted at the nearby plant of the I ternational Smelting and Refining Company. In those days no attempt was made torecovercopper from any oxide minerals present. As mining operations progressed it soon became evident that the proportion of oxide minerals present would steadily increase, and. it was realized that some method of treatment would have to be developed whereby copper could' be recovered from both oxide and. sulphide minerals contained in the ore. A research program was instituted and after some years of experimental and, pilot plant work a new hydro-metallurgical process was developed whereby it became possible to extract copper from both the oxide and. sulphide minerals in a single leaching operation. The solvent adopted consisted of a mixture of sulphuric acid and ferric sulphate,' Following dissolution, the dissolved copper would be recovered by electrolysis. Also in the process of electrolyzing, spent solutions of sulphuric acid, H2SO4, and. ferric sulphate, Fe2(SOk)3, would be regeneratede and. somade available for continuous reuse. The process appeared to be a success and the decision was made to build a full-sized leaching plant for the future treatment of I spiration mixed ore. Construction was started and the leaching plant was completed in 1926, With the start of ferric-sulphate leaching the Inspiration Concentrator was shut down and, with the exception of a few short time runs has not operated since that time. The ferric sulphate leaching process served. Inspiration well for some 30 years and during that time won a name for itself as a classic example of hydro-metallurgical treatment of mixed sulphide oxide ores. Originally the plant was designed. to process some 7,500 tons per day of a mixed ore containing about 1,2% copper, of which 60% was present as oxide and. 40% as sulphide, Down through the years various improvements were made for the purpose of increasing plant capacity and as well to change the limiting 'factor of sulphide-oxide ratio, The final result was a leaching capacity of 9,600 tons per day when treating a 1% copper ore with a reversal of the sulphide-oxide ratio to 60% sulphide and 40% oxide.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coals in Dickenson County, Va. It is one in a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for the production of metallurgical coke either as mined or after beneficiation. Nearly 4 million tons of coal was produced in Dickenson County in 1955, of which approximately 2.7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 5 cleaning plants. The Federal Geological Survey has estimated that nearly 1,300 million tons of measured and indicated coal reserves remained in the county as of January 1, 1951.

Before going into this subject, I would very much like to call to your attention some past history on patents granted by the United States Patent office that involved ammonium nitrate. On February 10, 1885, a patent was granted to Russell S. Penniman. "The object of this invention is to securely protect ammonium nitrate against deliquescent and to maintain it in substantially its normal disintegrated condition, so as to afford a new product suited for ready use in the manufacture of high explosives, and enable the immediate admixture thereof with any of the well known explosive substances or compounds heretofore employed. 'Whether the nitrate be thus granulated or otherwise reduced to a granular or divided condition, it is then thoroughly mixed with about twelve (12) percent of the fluid or semi-fluid carbonaceous protecting medium, which forms a readily applied jacket or coating for the granules of nitrate and also serves as a carbonaceous element in such explosive compounds as it may thereafter be employed in."

General Industral Minerals - Penn Top South The silica industry is relatively small and in general is made up of small plants located near the consumer. In the United States there are approximately 155 established operating plants located in 37 states, extending from coast to coast. Silica, in varying degrees of chemical purity, enjoys a very diversified market. Silica is the basic ingredient of glass, bothcontainer and flat glass, and is used for grinding and polishing of flat glass up to the final polishing stages where rouge is generally used. Silica is used for foundry molds and cores, sandblasting, stone cutting, refractories, placing sand in furances, glass coatings and linings, laboratory glassware, construction, oil well fracturing for increased oil flow, filtering purposes, silicate of soda, silicon carbide, and others.

DURING recent years thermal drying of fine coal has increased at a tremendous rate, but very little discussion of the several excellent units has found its way into print. This is particularly true for operating and maintenance costs, and the operator who is faced with his first fine coal drying installation must depend chiefly on hearsay when trying to determine what his drying costs will be. This article presents the maintenance and operating costs for the seven drying units now installed in preparation plants of Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. and lists other cost information that should be obtained before any particular drying unit is selected. Plant Description: The fine coal drying section of Plant A consists of four Flash driers operating on two furnaces equipped with spreader stokers. Plant B has one Flash drier operating (together with a screen-type coarse coal drier) on one furnace equipped with a spreader stoker. Plant C has two Cascade-type driers operating on a single furnace with a spreader stoker. Plant Costs: Tables I, 11, and III present the cost of operating these units as reported by the individ- ual plants. As can be seen, the labor rates vary, depending on the amount of overtime paid and the time interval the cost figures cover. There is considerable variation in thermal units used and in the value given to the thermal units at the particular mine. There is some difference in power costs at a given location and, finally, the power costs of conveyors leading to the drying plants were included in some cases. Maintenance supply costs are simply a tabulation of the cost of all supplies used on the driers, furnaces, and stokers. Depreciation is not included, and the tables omit items such as supervision, plant cleanup, oiling, general maintenance, taxes, and insurance. These tables in themselves do not offer a true comparison of costs. This information must be reduced to some common basis. But what is this common basis to be? A mine operator must calculate his overall mine and preparation plant costs in terms of tons of clean coal sold. Unit costs on pieces of equipment within a given plant are correctly calculated on the same basis. However, when unit costs are compared between one plant and another, some thought must be given to unit design. This reasoning is similar to the old argument concerning i solid bowl vs basket-type centrifuges—the units themselves are not directly comparable without their supporting equipment. An economic drilling programme is one which costs the !east in chemicals, equipment, and time. The basis for such a programme with rotary drilling techniques is a drilling fluid in which bentonites do not swell. This is recognized in the growing trend toward gyp and other inhibited mud systems. Therefore, even though the mechanism of thinner action is a subject of applied colloid ,chemistry, the understanding of this mechanism is of economic importance in controlling the flow properties of inhibited muds. In phosphate, or sodium tannate, conditioned muds that are relative-!y free of contaminating-electrolytes, the thinner, or dispersing agent, is adsor.bed, ?creating an electrical double layer about the clay particles. The mutual repulsion of these charged particles effects colloidal stabilization, or deflocculation of the suspended clays, as discussed by Norton and others. In inhibited muds, however, the electrolyte concentration in the filtrate is sufficient to collapse the double layer and flocculation of the mud solids occurs, as evidenced by increased viscosity and gel values. Chemicals to control the flow properties of inhibited muds, therefore, are vital to the successful use of these systems as it is not always economical to adjust flow properties by watering back. Flocculation of suspended particles, as indicated in the work of Vervey, Overbeek, and others, is due primarily to gravity-like, long-range Van der Waals forces. Prevention of flocculation may, therefore, be secured by the interposition of any barrier between the particles, the thickness of which approximates the extension of the Van der Waals at-traction. Organic polyelectrolytes, such as Kembreak, Rayf!o, and Q-Broxin, may act to increase the double layer charge when used in small amounts in fresh-water muds. More important, however, is the fact that in inhibited muds an increase in concentration of the polyelecholyte permits the formation of a condensed film adsorption layer of the polyelectrolyte about the clay particle. When this occurs, the extremely viscous condensed adsorption layer creates a mechanical. barrier that prevents flocculation of clays, even in the presence of inhibiting concentrations of elecholytes. Rheological evaluation of the degree of deflocculation, or colloidal stability, may be made by utilizing the known effects of particle inter-action and volume concentration on the flow properties of suspensions. Rheological evaluation should be supplemented by direct microscopic or ultra-microscopic observation.

Rapid expansion of the titanium-metal industry focused attention upon ilmenite as a possible substitute for the more expensive and less abundant rutile in producing titanium tetrachloride. Most of the rutile available for this use is imported. Preliminary studies were undertaken to determine the chlorination characteristics of high-titanium slags produced by electric-arc furnace smelting of alluvial Idaho ilmenite at the Federal Bureau of Mines Northwest Electrodevelopment Experiment Station, Albany, Oreg. Low silicon, calcium, and aluminum contents of the slags enhanced their potential value for chlorination.

INCREASING demand for improved strength-weight ratios made on aircraft structures has resulted in a gradual increase in the tensile strength requirements for steels used in such applications. As the cyclic loads often are more critical than static loads, and the fatigue properties are generally the design criteria, the question arises as to whether an improvement in fatigue properties accompanies the increased tensile strength. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the relationship between fatigue and tensile properties for an aircraft quality steel in the 155 to 280 ksi (1000 psi) tensile strength range, using the Prot method of fatigue testing. Procedure and Results After preliminary work to establish proper heat treating procedures for this heat of aircraft quality electric furnace steel (a Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel," AMS- Prot Fatigue Testing Method—The determination of the endurance limit by the conventional Wohler method can be time-consuming and easily require 20 specimens when statistical variance is to be established. This is also true when endurance limit loads are determined on actual parts or subassem-blies, and the desirability of a reliable accelerated method has been evident for some time. The primary advantage of the Prot method of fatigue testing is in reducing the number of specimens and the time required for each test. Unlike the Wohler method, every Prot specimen tested con- tributes to the determination of the endurance limit, and the authors have been able to duplicate Wohler results obtained with 20 specimens with only half the specimens and a fourth of the total cycles. This new technique for defining the endurance limit was proposed in 1948' by Marcel Prot and consists of progressively increasing cyclic stress until fatigue failure occurs. DEFORMATION of magnesium crystals in a direction parallel to the basal plane has a special significance as a result of the preferred orientation characteristic of cold worked and recrystallized polycrystalline magnesium sheet and extruded rod in which the basal plane tends to lie in or near the plane of the sheet or the axis of a rod. The principal objective of the present study is a determination of the modes of plastic deformation in magnesium single crystals in this orientation. Evidence for nonbasal slip in magnesium has been presented by a number of authors. Schmid and Was-serman&apos; indicated that pyramidal slip on {1011} < 1120> or {1012} <1120> could occur above 225°C. Bakarian and Mathewson2 stablished that the slip system {1011} <1120> operates at high temperatures and that 225°C was a lower limit for pyramidal slip. The latter authors also showed that the critical resolved shear stress for {1011} slip was 400 g per sq mm at 330°C, while that for basal slip was 66 g per sq mm at the same temperature. Thus, at 330°C basal slip should be expected for all orientations except those in which the stress axis lies almost in the basal plane. More recently Burke and Hibbard3 oserved pyramidal slip at 25°C, when the stress axis was 6" to the basal plane and 14" to a <1120> slip direction. The critical resolved shear stress for pyramidal slip was 52 g per sq mm, which is only slightly greater than their value for basal slip (46 g per sq mm). Chadhuri, Chang, and Grant4 have observed non-basal slip in creep tests with polycrystalline specimens in the temperature range 250" to 350°C. The observed slip bands, which were extremely irregular in appearance, can be explained in terms of cooperative slip on {1011} and (1010) planes which have a common slip direction. Prismatic (1070) slip in polycrystalline magnesium was observed by Hauser, Landon, and Dorn.5 It was found to occur at low temperatures (78" and 195°K) and it was accompanied by cross slip in which the cooperating plane was the basal plane. Since prismatic slip occurred only at regions of high stress concentrations, the critical resolved shear stress could not be determined. Experimental Procedure The present work was performed on crystal specimens which were all cut from the same large single crystal. The original cylindrical crystal, 0.5 x 7 in., was grown in a Bridgman type furnace in which the temperature gradient was moved past the stationary crystal in the manner described by Jillson6 and Burke.&apos; High purity magnesium was furnished by the Dow Chemical Co. with the following spectro-graphic analysis in weight percent: 0.003 pct Al, <0.01 pct Ca, 0,002 pct Cu, <0.001 pct Fe, 0.008 pct Mn, <0.001 pct Ni, <0.002 pct Pb, <0.01 pct Si, <0.001 pct Sn, and <0.01 pct Zn. The large crystal was cut into four cylindrical pieces about 1.5 in. long. Capillary forces play a controlling role in water-drive displacement processes both in laboratory experiments and in actual reservoirs, but their quantitative importance may be quite different in the two cases. Because of the importance of conducting laboratory experiments which are representative of field conditions, it is necessary to understand exactly the role of capillary forces in the displacement process. Though a number of experimental investigations related to this subject are contained in the literature, there appears to be a lack of information pertaining to unsteady-state experiments in water-wet media. This experimental study was conducted to obtain additional laboratory data to clarify further the role of capillary forces in both the macroscopic and microscopic flow of oil and water in porous materials. THEORETICAL CONSlDERATlONS The capillary pressure is defined as the difference in pressure between a continuous oil phase and a continuous water phase in a porous material.&apos; The magnitude of this pressure difference depends on the interfacial curvature and the interfacial tension. The interfacial curvature is determined by the geometry of the pore spaces, the wettability of the rock surfaces, and the quantity of cach phase present. Capillary forces are involved in a water-drive displacement process in that they exert a controlling influence on the microscopic fluid distribution which in turn is reflected in the saturation or macroscopic flow behavior. Microscopic Fluid Distribution Because of the microscopic nature of the displacement of oil by water, it is necessary to consider the flow and the fluid distribution in individual pores. On this microscopic scale the capillary Forces, which act over a distance of one or two sand grain diameters, control the distribution of oil and water under static equilibrium conditions. When an external force is applied to the fluids, such as in a water-injection experiment, the applied forces tend to distort the oil-water interfaces. However, in most fine-grained, water-wet sands, the applied pressure difference across one or two grain diameters is usually several orders of magnitude less than the capillary pressure difference. These con-siderations lead to the theory&apos; that even during flow the capillary forces continue to control the microscopic distribution of oil and water within the pores of a porous material for all practical reservoir and laboratory flow rates. This concept of capillary forces controlling the microscopic distribution of fluids has been substantially verified by other investigators3-7 who have found a lack of dependence of relative permeability and residual oil saturation on rate of fluid injection. Macroscopic Distribution The microscopic influence of capillary forces cannot be observed easily and only the effect on the macroscopic or average saturation can be detected. The saturation, of course, is really the point of interest. During a water flood, large differences in saturation at the flood front cause large capillary pressure gradients. This, in turn, causes water to advance ahead of the flood front thereby reducing the capillary pressure gradient in this region. The result is that in homogeneous porous media capillary pressure gradients tend to cause a diffuse displacement front. At low rates in laboratory columns, the front may extend over the entire column length. When the advancing water first reaches the outflow face of a core, the water, which is the wetting phase, cannot be produced because the pressure in the water just inside the core is lower than the pressure in the oil-filled space around the outflow face. This difference in pressure is equal to the capillary pressure for the water saturation existing at the outflow face. Water, therefore, accumulates at the outflow end of the core which causes a reduction in the capillary pressure. Because the capillary pressure does not vanish except at the residual oil saturation,7,8,9 water will not be produced until the residual oil saturation exists at the outflow face. This entire effect,"&apos; which is called the "boundary effect", results in a region of relatively high water saturation near the outflow face. At low rates of injection in a short column, this region of high water saturation may extend over a considerable portion of the column. This report summarizes the results of laboratory investigations by the Alaska Mining Experiment Station, Juneau, to determine the practicability of treating cinnabar-stibnite ore by bulk flotation and controlled-atmosphere roasting of the concentrate. Ore from the Red Devil mine near Sleetmute, Alaska, was selected for testing; it is typical of ores widely distributed throughout the Kuskokwim River Basin. The material, consisting of stibnite and cinnabar in ankerite, dolomite, and quartz, assayed 1.55 percent Hg and 2.87 percent Sb. Continuous treatment of the ore in a laboratory flotation circuit recovered 95.7 percent of the mercury and 82.6 percent of the antimony in a concentrate that assayed 20.4 percent Hg and 34.6 percent Sb.

The Humphrey Preparation Plant of Christopher Coal Company, located in Monongalia County, West Virginia, was built to process the combined production of the Pursglove No. 15 and the Humphrey No. 7 Mines. Both Mines operate in the Pittsburgh Seam, primarily producing Metallurgical Fuel destined for by-product ovens in the Pittsburgh District. The results of an extensive core-drilling program have established sufficient reserves of low-sulfur coal to justify a 20,000 ton-per-day preparation plant, This is the story of the preparation phase of this combined operation. The percentage depletion deduction on Federal Income Tax Returns under the provisions of the 1939 Internal Revenue Code and of Sections 611 to Section 615, inclusive, of the revenue act of 1954, have created innumerable administrative difficulties, and a new interpretation of "gross income from the property" in that the Courts have expanded the ideas of what constitutes "gross income from the property" to a degree unheard of and unthought of prior to the enactment of these two codes. Originally, under the Revenue Acts of 1917, 1918, and 1920 depletion was allowable, based upon mine valuations as of March 1, 1913; if the mine was owned prior to March 1, 1913; upon cost, as of the date of acquisition if purchased subsequent to March 1, 1913; and upon a "discovery" basis if the mine was discovered after March 1, 1913, The "jab" for mine valuations as of March 1, 1913 and for discovery valuations and depletion was not as bad as it has been made out to be. Thousands of valuations and estimates of reserves were made and agreed upon between taxpayers and Internal Revenue Service engineers and as the years went on the answers have been found to be "reasonable." However, human nature being what it is each case was a battle of wits - of a sort - and many resulted in severe differences of opinion and litigation. As tax rates increased the situation was not bettered. I could talk for several hours on this phase of depletion but it is all past now andwould not give any real service or better understanding of the matter.

This paper discusses the basic requirements covering the area between the initial discovery of a deposit and a decision as to whether or not the deposit will support an economically sound mining venture. The procedure for gaining the necessary information and the sequence of steps is in .some respects parallel to gaining like information on deposits other than the sand type. For the sake of simplicity the stages and sequence are presented as follow: first, the initial reconnaissance drilling; second, the exploration drilling to permit initial ore body estimates; third, metallurgical testing; fourth, the estimate of plant and operating costs; and last, the economic balance. The objective of the reconnaissance drilling is to collect sufficient information to reach a decision as to the advisability of further exploration or the abandonment of the area. This initial phase will comprise, in addition to some drilling, a thorough reconnaissance of the area, a study of the best geological and topographic maps of the region, and a study of any literature available, all under the guidance of a geologist.

Knowledge of the water content of oil-bearing formations is important in petroleum-reservoir evaluation work. Electric logging provides a means for making reliable estimates of water content if resistivity-saturation relationships representative of the formations are available. Relationships can be determined in the laboratory by a number of methods. This report describes and presents results of a laboratory investigation conducted at the Bureau of Mines Appalachian Experiment Station, Morgantown, W. Va. (1) to evaluate an evaporation method of attaining water saturations in sandstone samples when determining resistivity-saturation relationships and (2) to compare saturation exponents derived from data obtained, using different methods of achieving water saturations. A series of tests was conducted to determine the effect of evaporation on salinity distribution within the core specimen. Results of these tests show that a zone of high salinity was set up at the surface of a sample during evaporation and that long periods were required for the sample to reach resistance equilibrium after evaporation had ceased. Equilibrium time ranged from several minutes to several days, depending on the sample size and the technique used. The high-salinity zone was removed from the sample by using auxiliary porous material in capillary contact with the sample surface during evaporation. Salinity determinations and resistance measurements indicate that, at saturations greater than the minimum interstitial values, the mechanism of flow during evaporation was one of moisture migration mainly as a liquid from the interior of the test specimens to their exterior surfaces. The concentration of the contained brine remained essentially unchanged, except for a narrow zone near the evaporating surfaces.

AKNOWLEDGE of the density of a pulp or suspension is frequently required by the millman, to whom fluctuations in density, which occur in all mill circuits, are of importance and interest. There ,are many w.ays currently in use to determine density and probably the most common method is to take samples of the pulp. The proper sampling of the material is no easy matter, particularly when the pulp contains a sand fraction which settles rapidly. For example, when filling a liter container from the overflow of a classifier, it is al-most impossible to fill the can completely and yet prevent overflow. If there is an overflow, the pulp remaining in the can invariably has an excess of sand and the indicated density will be too high. To surmount such difficulties, and to obtain a continuous indication of the density of a pulp at any desired depth, the simple indicator shown diagrammatically in Figure l was designed by the writer in 1951. WE RECENTLY completed a study for a client, who is an applicant to export gas from the Province of Alberta, on the effects of gas export on Alberta&apos;s economy. This study was part of the client&apos;s application ?before the Conservation Board, and, no doubt, some of you are familiar with it. Submissions by other applicants in earlier hearings before the Board and before the Royal Commission on Energy, as well as claims made by parties opposing export, have also brought forward a number of other opmwns regarding possible economic effects. Ali of these studies have been on a piecemeal basis. They have dealt with particular aspects of particular applications, and only indirectly and by inference with the overall question of gas ex-port. We have prepared this paper to review the overall picture and ex-amine, as far as time permits, all sides of the question. While the paper is entitled Economic Effects of Gas Export on Alberta, we felt that the area considered should in-elude northeastern British Columbia, not only because Westcoast, the first major gas export project, is essentially a northeastern B. C. project, but because this area has historically been, from the point of view of economic, if not of political, geography, part of Alberta. In this paper, when we talk of export, we mean export from the Province or, in this case, from Alberta plus northeastern B. C. Sales to other parts of Canada have exactly the same effect on the economy of this area as l1ave sales to the United States, provided, of course, they are made on equal terms.

This report is one of a series describing exploration, development, mining methods, and costs at United States open-pit mines; the Bureau of Mines prepares and publishes them in cooperation with the mining companies. Their purpose is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on mining methods and practices at various United States mines. The exploration, development, equipment, and mining of a large, oxidized-copper ore deposit by open-pit methods, the leaching of the ore with sulfuric acid solution, and the recovery of the copper as cement copper are described herein.

UNEXPECTED brittle failures of metals in practical applications are a serious problem to many industries and to the nation as a whole. Considerable effort has been devoted to studies of the brittle behavior in metals. However, the major portion of this effort has been directed at developing techniques and apparatus for the purposes of determining the susceptibility of metals to brittle failure and of making various types of observations of the phenomena. Relatively minor effort has been made to understand the basic mechanisms involved in initiating brittle failures. A more complete understanding of the nature and mechanism of the brittle failure problem would be very helpful in efforts directed toward predicting and avoiding brittle failure and toward the development of suitable materials and designs that are not susceptible to a brittle behavior. The intent of the present investigation is to acquire this basic understanding. The pronounced transition from a ductile-to-brittle behavior is most prevalent in metals having the body-centered-cubic lattice structure, primarily be- cause metals of this structure exhibit a strong dependence of yield strength upon temperature and the rate of straining. The generally recognized qualitative concept of the ductile-to-brittle transition is that brittle (cleavage) failure occurs when the yield strength exceeds the cleavage fracture strength. This condition can apparently be achieved by decreasing temperature or increasing strain rate. Likewise, a normally ductile metal can be made to fracture in an apparently brittle manner by the introduction of triaxial stresses (notches) where the ratio of normal to shear stresses can be increased to such an extent that the normal stress exceeds the fracture strength before the critical shear stress for plastic flow is achieved. Neither of these concepts require any prior plastic deformation or explain why the observed fracture strengths are so much less than the theoretical cohesive strength. The results of several investigations of the ductile-to-brittle transition in body-centered-cubic metals illustrate rather conclusively that measurable amounts of nonelastic deformation do precede cleavage fracture, even at extremely low temperatures. These studies suggested that the early stages of plastic flow, particularly abrupt yielding, and their relationship to brittle fracture should be examined
