INTRODUCTION Although the oil industry has been aware of the directional variability of permeability in porous rock, the directional variability of relative permeability has been largely ignored. Yet it is apparent that such an effect must be present in a system in which the distribution of oil and gas within the porous matrix is controlled by capillary forces. It is easy to visualize a rock composed of layers of fine and coarse material such that gas flow across the bedding planes would take place only after the average oil saturation had been reduced to a very low value. The fine layers, because of their greater capillarity, would remain saturated and act as barriers to the flow of gas after the coarse layers had been desaturated. Flow of gas parallel to the bedding planes would obviously take place at a much greater liquid saturation. Without more complete information concerning the geology of a reservoir than is generally available, it is not possible to predict exactly how such phenomena would affect the over-all performance of an oil field. It is possible, however, to predict qualitatively the effect of stratification on relative permeability measurements made on laboratory cores. In this investigation the effect of stratification was studied analytically by assuming that two porous materials with different capillary pressure-desaturation curves (but identical relative permeability curves) were in contact and in capillary equilibrium. As a qualitative check on the analytical results, cores having various degrees of visible stratification were used for relative permeability measurements made with fluids flowing both parallel and perpendicular to the bedding planes. A quantitative check was considered impractical because of the difficulty of devising models in which two materials of predetermined properties could be joined without the plane of contact becoming a discontinuity. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS AND ASSUMPTIONS The assumption of capillary equilibrium in an oil-gas system implies that the difference in pressure between oil and gas is everywhere the same. This means that the curvature of the interfaces must be everywhere the same in order to satisfy the equation where PC is the pressure difference between phases, y the interfacial tension and r, and r2 are the major and minor radii of curvature. Depending on the pore size distribution of coarse and fine layers, the volumetric percentages of oil and gas in these layers will differ when equilibrium exists. The exact relationship can only be determined by obtaining the complete capillary pressure-desaturation curves for each of the porous materials in contact. It has been pointed out elsewhere' that the capillary pressure-desaturation curves of sedimentary porous materials can often be approximated by the relation where C is a constant and Soe is the effective saturation to oil based on a percentage of the pore volume effective to flow. In the same paper it was indicated that, as a first approximation, the values of oil relative permeability are given by and the values of gas relative permeability by For this analysis Eqs. 2, 3, and 4 were assumed to apply to each of two components of a hypothetical porous rock in capillary equilibrium. It was also assumed that each of the components had a residual wetting phase saturation of 20 per cent so that 80 per cent of the total pore volume was effective to flow. The permeability of the coarse stratum was taken as 100, and its displacement pressure was such that C in Eq. 2 had the numerical value of 1. The corresponding values for the fine stratum were 10 for the permeability and 10 for C. Units are not specified because they do not enter into the final results. The choice of the permeabilities and displacement pressure ratios was made to expedite the calculations. Any reasonable rock properties could have been chosen without changing the results qualitatively. Several arrangements of the two components were studied. Table 1 summarizes the resultant permeabilities obtained for four types of arrangement. RELATIVE PERMEABILITY CALCULATIONS The first step in the computation of relative permeability for the composite cores was the plotting of the capillary pressure-desaturation curves and the relative permeability curves for the individual components according to Eqs. 2, 3, and 4. Vehicles traveling on untreated dirt and gravel roads at open-pit mines disseminate high concentrations of dust (fig. 1). Excessive dust creates safety hazards by reducing visibility and may endanger the health of the men who breathe it. If the dust contains free silica, it can cause silicosis. In addition, maintenance costs of mechanical equipment are increased if equipment is operated in extremely dusty places. Dust on haulage roads in hot, arid country can be controlled if the surface of the road is sprinkled frequently and adequately with water. Often, when roads are sprinkled with water to control the dust, hazards are caused through reduced traction and skidding because of the mud that is formed on the surface of the road. Reducing the amount of water used will help to reduce the hazard of skidding.

Measurements of the settling rates and the rheological behaviour of heavy media formed of fine suspensions in water of each of magnetite, ferrosilicon, and galena have been made. For media ranging from 1.6 to 2.8 specific gravity the settling measurements gave initial settling rates of from 0.5 to 0.01 ?cm. 'Per minute for magnetite; from 4.0 to 0.8 cm. per minute for galena; and from 35 to 1.6 cm. 'Per minute for ferrosilicon. These measurements indicate the ?relative stability of the suspensions and should be helpful in establishing the useful specific gravity range for each medium. Measurements of the consistency of the media were made with a Fann Model 35 rotational viscometer. Aibnormal or non-Newtonian behaviour was observed in the case of each media, the apparent viscosity being dependent upon the rate of shear or the intensity of motion. Measurements were made over the rate of shear range of 10? to 1,000 reciprocal seconds. The apparent viscosities of the magnetite media ranged from 450 down to 4?0 centipoise at 2.30 specific gravity, and from 2,450 down to 700 centipoise at 2.80 specific gravity. In the case of the galena media, the variation was from 40, through a minimum of 6, to 10 centipoise at 2.20 specific gravity, and from 950, through a minimum of 180, to 450 centipoise at 3.6 specific gravity. The ferrosilicon suspensions exhibited apparent viscosities ranging from 42, through a minimum of 5.6, to 9 centipoise at 1.9 specific gravity, and from 160, though a minimum of 35, to 85 centipoise at 2.8 specific gravity. The dependency of apparent viscosity or consistency upon intensity of motion is considered to be of particular significance in applications of heavy media where the medium is in rapid motion.

Early work on chemical precipitation of metals from metal salt solutions is reviewed. The chemistry and thermodynamics of precipitating copper, nickel, cobalt, and cadmium metals by reaction with hydrogen are discussed. Mechanisms of metal precipitation, nu-cleation, growth, and agglomeration are reviewed, as well as some solubility phenomena of cleation,gases and solids at elevated temperatures. Experimental data presented deal mainly with the reaction of copper sulfate solution with Hz. METAL can be recovered from a leach solution either indirectly by precipitation as a compound that is later reduced or directly by electrolysis, cementation, or chemical reduction, for example, with hydrogen. The widely used electrowinning processes suffer from the inefficiency of converting fuel to low voltage dc and from low current efficiency when complete recovery is attempted. With the batch hydrogen reduction methods outlined here, a unit of fuel converted to hydrogen in modern gas reform plants will make two to three times as much metal as can be obtained with electrolysis. With continuous hydrogen reduction, four to six times as much metal is obtained. Precipitation by reducing a metal salt solution with H, has been known for almost 100 years.' Commercial use of the process, however, awaited the research and development program initiated by Chemical Construction Corp. Within the last few years this program has brought about construction of commercial plants, listed on p. 701. Ideal hydrogen reduction will precipitate a pure metal from a solution obtained by commercial leaching methods at a rapid rate without excessive temperatures and pressures. The metal precipitate will be of desired size and density, less than a percent left in the vessel being deposited on the wetted parts. The present discussion will outline Chemical Construction Corp.'s early development program and will discuss the chemistry and mechanics of reducing copper, nickel, cobalt, and cadmium from solution by H2. Work on selective reduction of nickel from cobalt has been described earlier.2 The article is not concerned with precipitation of copper by disproportionation of cuprous solutions where yield is limited" to 50 pet.* It does not discuss use of gaseous reducing agents other than hydrogen, such as SCV which may lead to contamination with sulfur, or CO," which is considerably more expensive than hydrogen and produces a gaseous reaction product, CO2.† The article does not include use of other nongaseous reducing agents: which are far more expensive than CO. Also, notes on the history, engineering design, and performance of commercial plants have been given elsewhere." It will be shown that a pure metal can be precipitated by reduction with hydrogen from solutions obtained by commercial leaching methods when the solution cohposition is controlled and proper acidity, proper metal ion concentration through controlled complex formation and hydrolysis, and adequate agitation for suspension of metal and for transfer of reducing gas are maintained. Reasonable temperatures and pressures are used which are less excessive than those used by previous workers, although they are maintained at above equilibrium values because of process kinetics.' It has also been found necessary to induce nuclea-tion and to control growth and agglomeration in order to get a powder product of suitable physical properties. Review of the Literature Muller, Schlecht, and Schubardt of I. G. Farbenm claimed a successive reduction of silver, copper, nickel, cobalt, and zinc from ammoniacal solution by applying progressively higher temperatures and hydrogen pressures. Metals produced by this technique were not pure, since no attempt was made to adjust the solution composition between the different reductions. It is doubtful that the zinc product contained any metallic zinc. The major contribution to the literature" was made by the Ipatiews,12 who prepared platinum, iridium, copper, nickel, cobalt, lead, tin, arsenic. antimony, and bismuth at often extreme conditions, up to the critical temperature of water (373"C), at 1500 to 7500 psi, for as long as several days. Even cadmium and zinc were claimed to have been observed in trace quantities precipitated together with basic salts. In the early experiments solutions were not stirred. Extensive formation of oxides and basic salts occurred. probably long before sufficient hydrogen could be supplied in the unstirred liquid to decrease the metal concentration in solution by reduction. Although viscosity is known to be important in processing and handling finely ground urea, its effect has never been fully quantified. This report describes the methods used and the results obtained in the initial phases of a broad investigation of the influence of viscosity of water suspensions of minerals in flotation, thickening, filtering, and other mineral-dressing unit operations. Several types of vis-cosimeters were tested before reliable and reproducible results could be obtained on mineral suspensions. After the viscosimeter used in the research was calibrated and standardized, tests were made on six pure minerals to study the relationship of pulp density, particle size, crystallinity, and cleavage on viscosity. An orifice-type viscosimeter equipped with a mechanical stirrer gave as good results as other types and was more flexible, faster, and simpler to operate. The orifice-type viscosimeter, when calibrated and standardized with glycerin and water mixtures, proved satisfactory over a wide range of viscosities. The accuracy and reproducibility were reasonably constant between 1 centipoise and 200 centipoises, the anticipated range in common mineral-dressing unit operations.

Kuczynski's formula has been derived for the case of nonspherical particles. TWO formulae of Kuczynski's type have been derived, one describing the increase in tensile strength, the other describing the progress of shrinkage of a powder compact. It has been strength,shown that the exponents of all three formulae each contain two magnitudes of different physical characters, viz, the geometrical factor a and the kinetic factor ß. The interrelationships between the three exponents are stated. SOME years ago Kuczynski1 experimentally showed that the radius, x, of the area of contact between very small spherical metal particles and a metallic block is related to the time of sintering, t, by the following equation x = constant tk [11 where k has the value 1/5 or 1/7. Assuming that the metal particles were perfect spheres and the metallic block was perfectly flat, he derived the foregoing equation from theoretical considerations of the process of material transport in metals, and he showed that exponent k is different for different mechanisms of transport, e.g., k = 1/2 for viscous flow (according to Frenkel2), k = 1/3 for evaporation and condensation, k = 1/5 for volume diffusion, and k = 1/7 for surface diffusion. From this Kuczynski concluded that the mechanism of transport was either volume diffusion or surface diffusion, depending on whether the value of k, as found in his experiments, was 1/5 or 1/7. Subsequently. Cabrera8 corrected Kuczynski's calculations with regard to surface diffusion, showing that the theoretical value of exponent k is 1/5 for both volume and surface diffusion. He supposed that the different experimental values of k were due to slight differences in the shape of the metal particles. An exponential relationship similar to the aforementioned was found by Okamura, Masuda, and Kikuta,4 Masuda and Kikuta, and Takasaki8 when studying the rate of shrinkage on powder compacts during sintering. The authors measured the shrinkage by means of the fraction w = Vp — V./Vp — V,,,, where V,, is the volume of the green compact, V, is the volume of the sintered compact, and V,,, is the volume of the compact in its densest state. This fraction, w, they found, is related to the time of sintering, t, by the equation w == constant tm. [21 Further, Bockstiegel, Masing, and Zapf7 observed that the tensile strength, s, of sintering iron powder compacts can also be related to the time of sintering, t, by an equation of the foregoing type, i.e., s = constant tn. [3] For exponent n the values 0.28 (S=2/7) and 0.35 ( 2/5) were obtained, and the authors pointed out that there might exist a simple interrelation between exponent n as found in their experiments and exponent k in Kuczynski's equation. The authors supposed that 2k = n, since the strength of adhesion between a metal sphere and a block (as in Kuczyn-ski's experiments) must approximately be proportional to their contact area, p. x2. Theoretical Considerations This paper is an attempt to correlate the fundamental experiments of Kuczynski's type with the results obtained with powder compacts as represented by Egs. 2 and 3. In particular, the paper is to show how the rate of sintering is influenced by the geometry of the sintering particles and by the type of material transport. As the geometry of particles conglomerating in a powder compact is very complex, some simplifying assumption has to be made, of course, in order to adapt the problem to mathematical treatment. In the following paragraph a suitable simplification is introduced, and Kuczynski's formula is derived for the case of nonsphcrical particles. Relation Between Area of Contact and Sintering Time—As the face of contact between two particles in a sintering powder compact is not necessarily a circle (as in the case of spheres sintering to a block), Kuczynski's formula is modified as follows: Let the perimeter of the face of contact be described by means of polar coordinates R, 4, as shown in Fig. la, so the area of contact, f, is determined by f= 1/2 . S112p[R(Æ) ]2 dÆ [4] Then, let the two particles be intersected by a plane perpendicular to area f. The intersection is shown in Fig. lb. According to the nomenclature in this figure, the distance, h, between the surfaces of the two particles is a function of T and Æ: h = h(r,Æ). BECAUSE of the need for ductile heat resistant alloys of non-strategic composition, there has been metallurgical development of Fe-A1 alloys possessing improved ductility and hot strength, together with high oxidation resistance. Iron and alu- minum form solid solutions up to approximately 35 pct Al. Alloys in the 8 to 12 pct A1 range are characterized by excellent oxidation resistance, high electrical resistivity' and, when appropriately alloyed, have creep rupture strength equivalent to that of the austenitic stainless steels.' At higher aluminum levels, the magnetic properties are of considerable interest. Nachman and Buehler" have recently reported on the desirable magnetic characteristics of the 16 pct alloy.

IN a previous study of hypereutectoid Ti-Ni alloys' a substructure was observed in quenched powder specimens when the constitution was 100 pet retained ß body-centered-cubic phase. The alloy powders were quenched from 1000°C by a blast of helium gas and precautions already described were observed throughout the work, to minimize contamination. Ogden et al.2 have previously observed subboundaries in the ß phase of a Ti-Mn-N alloy; but this structure was attributed to nitrogen-rich a precipitation. The nitrogen content of the Ti-Ni alloys does not exceed 0.02 pet and the quenching rate was sufficiently rapid to suppress precipitation reactions. Since X-ray diffraction results have confirmed the absence of any second phase which might account for this phenomenon, it seems unlikely that this substructure is explicable in terms of nitrogen content. Fig. 1 shows the substructure in adjacent grains of 100 pet ß phase in a quenched 6 atomic pet Ni alloy. Fig. 2 shows adjacent ß grains in a similarly treated alloy; one grain contains marked intracrys-talline boundaries and the other is completely free from any substructure. The suberystals appear to have fairly regular shapes, suggesting a regular orientation relationship among them. Tempering the retained ß structure at temperatures below the eutectoid eliminates the substructure at an early stage of ß decomposition. At the present time it is possible only to guess at an explanation for this subboundary phenomenon, since very little work has been reported on substructures resulting from phase changes. IN the use of free bubbles with precise temperature control and continuous pH measurement, the contact angle apparatus differs from all previous equipment. Experimental procedures differ sharply from the captive bubble method1,2 of introducing the gaseous phase in the three-phase system. When freed from the tube and captured by a solid surface, a bubble more closely conforms to the spherical ideal set up by the usual mathematical analysis of surface free energy or surface tensional relationships of the forces involved. The assembled equipment, Fig. 1, departs from the usual contact angle apparatus in providing: 1) water circulation for fixing temperature, 2) instruments to measure and record pH during testing, and 3) a system for producing and using free bubbles. The apparatus allows testing over a broad range of closely controlled conditions, and the use of free bubbles gives contact angles independent of operator manipulation, which was unavoidable in the older captive bubble method. A bubble released below the specimen rises through the liquid and contacts the mineral. If the mineral is gas-avid the bubble adheres, developing a finite contact angle. Reaction cells (1), 2x33/8x5 3/16 in. ID, are of pyrex glass 5 mm thick. To prevent optical distortion, the sides are optical flats and are planed parallel to within five wave lengths of light over the entire surface. Special cement is required to withstand chemical attack and thermal shock. The cell is placed in a thermal jacket (2) made of welded aluminum. A water seal for the optical ports is made by using O-rings tightened against the flats of the cell by fine-threaded and adjustable ports, Fig. 2. In-flow water is discharged downward from a manifold located near the bottom of the cell jacket. Water overflows the weirs at each end of the cell jacket, discharging from both sides to a collecting manifold (24). A hose (26) leads the overflow water to the thermal-conditioner well (4), which is recessed to accommodate a reaction cell and two beakers (150 ml). Both the thermal jacket and the thermal-conditioner well are insulated to minimize the effects of temperature differentials. Water, discharging from the thermal-conditioner well, returns to a thermostat bath and pump (3), from which it is pumped to the thermal jacket. The thermostat bath permits temperatures to be adjusted from 1" or 2°C to 80°C and will maintain the selected temperature within 0.2ºC. EFFECTIVE methods for determining grade and reserves of pegmatites in advance of mining have been developed in recent years. When intensive work began on the economic geology of pegmatites during the early years of World War 11, it was widely believed that grade and reserves could be estimated only in a most general way. The literature indicated that not all pegmatite deposits are unpredictable, but statements emphasizing unpredictability and irregularity seem to have been more widely accepted. Many standard references reflect the prevailing opinion that minerals: are unsystematic in their occurrence in pegmatites. Pegmatites have been described as "notorious for their irregular structure," and minerals within pegmatites as "irregularly distributed." "irregularly disseminated," of "erratic occurrence," "proverbially erratic in distribution," "characterized by extreme irregularity in ... size and distribution of the essential minerals, and variety and proportion of the accessory minerals," and "spotty.'"" Over many years, however, geologic techniques have been applied with increasing success to economic analysis of pegmatites. Investigations, chiefly since 1939, have shown that mineral distribution and structure of pegmatites are largely systematic and that detailed geologic study can be used to predict the size and shape of mineral deposits in pegmatites. Because the writers are most familiar with the pegmatites of the Black Hills, S. D., examples cited are from that area." Pegmatites mined in other dis- * All examples are described more cornpletely elsewhere.: tricts are similar to those in the Black Hills," and the techniques described here have been applied by geologists and engineers working in other districts. In actual practice few pegmatite mine operators attempt to make accurate estimates of grade and reserves in advance of mining. Many deposits are too small for mining except on a very small scale; few pegmatite mines have more than ten employes. Hence there is little systematic preparation for mining, and the capital outlay may be so small that only a general knowledge of reserves is necessary. Technical personnel are rarely employed by pegmatite mine operators to make such estimates. In the future, however, as capital outlay becomes larger, estimates of grade and reserves will have to be more accurate. Geologic Aspects of Determining Grade and Reserves Estimating grade and reserves requires that the type of pegmatite, the size and shape, and the internal structure be determined by detailed geologic mapping and careful mineralogic study. The wide variations in the texture and distribution of minerals within many pegmatite deposits make a thorough geologic study of this kind necessary before it is possible to decide what sampling methods should be used to determine mineral content or grade. Types of Pegmatites: The first step in economic appraisal of a pegmatite is to determine the min-eralogical and structural type. In general, pegmatites may be classified into two groups: 1) those in which component minerals are more or less evenly distributed throughout the entire body and show relatively minor variations in texture, and 2) those in which component minerals have been segregated into units with recognizable differences in texture, mineralogy. or both. Johnston" has classified these types of pegmatites as homogeneous and heterogeneous, respectively. Cameron et al.10 have used the terms ~inzoned and zoned for similar types. The difference between the homogeneous and heterogeneous types is of great commercial importance. Homogeneous pegmatites can seldom be mined where the products are concentrated by the hand methods now commonly used, but they have been mined in a few places where a milling process has

A three-phase, continuously-operated, 250 kv.a. electric smelting furnace has been installed at the Mines Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa, for the experimental treatment of ores and by-products of interest to the Canadian mining, metallurgical, and chemical industries. In the operation of this furnace particular emphasis is placed on the accumulation of quantitative data which will be useful in determining the most suitable smelting technique and the nature of the products, and in arriving at preliminary conclusions regarding the cast of power and electrodes. The results obtained in the experimental smelting of iron, manganese-iron, titanium- iron, nickel, and chromiumiron ores, and of a number of industrial by-products, clearly show the value of such treatment for materials of this type.

The bottom water drive analysis presented by Muskat has been extended to include fields with wider well spacings. Curves are presented from which volumetric sweepout, water-oil ratio, and rate relations may be calculated. The effects of non-unity ratios on sweepout eficiency and productivity decline have been studied by an approximate method. Also, the effect of gravity on volumetric sweepout has been approximated for a particurlar geometry. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to report work done in applying the analysis of bottom water drive reservoirs given by Muskat1 to a larger class of reservoirs, to extend this analysis to include the effects of gravity and non-unity mobility ratios in an approximate manner, and to investigate the rate of decline of productive capacity. The bottom water drive type reservoir is one where the oil is underlain by a water zone of sufficient thickness that water movement is essentially vertical. This system is defined in more detail in the appendix and a one well element is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. Muskat obtained solutions to the equations describing the volumetric displacement efficiency of idealized bottom water drive systems by assuming that gravity effects due to differences in density betwecn oil and water were negligible and that the mobilities of oil and water were the same. If either of these assumptions is not made, the complexity of the system makes an analytical solution well nigh impossible at the present stage of mathematical development. Coles and Stade' developed an approximation to consider these factors. The authors have refined approximations, starting with the same basic assumption, which should give a somewhat quantitative picture of bottom water drive performance when mobilities are not equal and the effects of gravity are not negligible. The results of these approximate calculations can then be used to obtain the decline in well productivity as the field is depleted.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines, the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

The Bureau of Mines has prepared, as circumstances have dictated, a series of schedules setting forth the minimum requirements that various types of equipment should meet to be considered safe and satisfactory for use under certain hazardous or unhealthful conditions. These schedules cover a wide variety of devices ranging from explosives to electrically operated mine locomotives. This paper discusses the functions and operations of schedules under which respiratory protective devices are tested and approved. It emphasizes that the aim of the Bureau respirator-approval system is to make available to the public respirators that meet definite performance requirements. The responsibility of the respirator manufacturer in pre-testing the device and in maintaining its quality after it is approved are explained. Aid is provided for the user in selecting the proper device for specific application, and a plea is made for better education of all concerned in the proper use of the devices. DISCUSSION Provisions have been made for testing and approving the following types of respiratory protective devices: Self-contained breathing apparatus,2/ supplied-air respirators,3/ gas masks,4/ dispersoid respirators,5/ and chemical-cartridge respirators.6/ These devices are tested at the Central Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines in Pittsburgh, Pa. Self-contained breathing apparatus is tested by personnel of Health and Safety District B; other types of respirators are tested by the Branch of Health Research.

The wolframite mineral series was studied to determine the effect of the FeO - MnO ratio on unit cell symmetry and thermal stability. This work was undertaken to evaluate the analytical procedures now in use for wolframite in scheelite and to aid in the development of improved methods of analysis. Wolframite grains were hand-picked, crushed, and screened; impurities were removed by selective magnetic separations using a Frantz isodynamic separator. The samples were further checked by optical spectroscopic and microscopic examination.

I read Professor Gaudin&apos;s paper with great interest and pleasure because for some time I have held that the chemical aspect of comminution is a subject of considerable importance to the mineral dresser and deserves to be thoroughly investigated. It does seem appropriate, however, to emphasize the fact that "fresh" edges and corners produced by the grinding of solids display enhanced reactivity has been recognized and utilized in the development of certain mineral identification techniques. Some of these techniques are worth noting, not only because they might facilitate research in the aspect of mineral dressing under discussion, but also because they emphasize the fact that many mineral species commonly regarded as being very inert can display a surprising reactivity when in the freshly ground state. In 1951 Isakov6 published a number of tests for the components of certain mineral species which depend essentially on grinding in a mortar a mixture of the material under investigation with a solid reagent. Thus when stibnite, 4(Sb2S3), is ground with sodium or potassium hydroxide. the antimony is revealed by a momentary development of a yellow color which changes in air to orange-red. Other antimony minerals need a preliminary treatment before the test can be carried out. This consists of grinding with aluminium sulfate, ferric sulfate or potassium bisulfate, and breathing upon the resultant mixture. I have employed a similar technique to determine the approximate magnesia content of certain limestones.&apos; The method depends essentially on the fact that when a sample of limestone is ground under controlled conditions with solutions of sodium hydroxide and Titan yellow the color of the final product is, within limits, a function of the amount of magnesia present. I have also shown that the components of a wide range of minerals can be identified by applying chemicals to their streaks on portions of vitrified, unglazed floor tiles, etc. Under such circumstances the diversity of the reactions which take place in the cold (because of the reactivity of fresh corners and edges) is surprising. Thus, for example, if a garnierite, (Ni,Mg)3Si2O5(OH)1, streak is treated first with a drop of 0.880 ammonia and then with a drop of a 1 pct alcoholic dimethyl-glyoxime it immediately becomes red, indicating the presence of nickel.&apos; Stevens and Carron9 have evolved a simple field test for distinguishing minerals by "abrasion pH." A soft nonabsorbent mineral is scratched in a drop of water on a streak plate until a milky suspension is formed. A piece of pH indicator paper is dipped into the suspension, after which it is removed and the maximum deviation from neutrality noted. When a hard mineral or one which absorbs water is being tested, fragments are first ground for 1 min with a few drops of water in a mortar to make a heavy suspension. The importance of the findings of such tests to mineral dressing may be judged by the abrasion pH values, Table 11, recorded by Stevens and Carron for certain species usually regarded as comparatively inert. The combined results Of the above researches clearly indicate that comminution is capable of altering the pH of a pulp and of causing the chemical nature of the surfaces of some of the components to be profoundly changed&apos; Depending On circumstances such surface alterations may have a beneficial or an adverse effect if these products are subsequently subjected to flotation. The tests also suggest that by grinding "inert" minerals with appropriate solid or liquid reagents "reactive" surfaces may be developed which might facilitate separations by flotation. It is an interesting and instructive problem to determine the reactions that are likely to take place when dry solid substances are subjected to comminution and to the unavoidable heat liberated during the process. To do this it is theoretically necessary to know the free energy values of the reactants and possible resultants, but unfortunately there is a dearth of such data! However, the heats of formation of many substances are known, and generally speaking, if in a reaction of the type AB + CD = AD + CB the sum of the heats of formation of AB and CD is less than that of AD and CB the reaction will probably proceed to the right. Thus, according to a note I have (the author of which I cannot name) if PbS (black) is warmed with CdSO, (white), PbSO., (white) and CdS (yellow) are formed, and that the reaction does, in fact, take place is indicated by the change in color of the mixture. The reaction is expected, as the sum of the heats of formation of PbS and CdSO, is less than that of PbSO, and CdS (as shown below). PbS + CdSO4 = PbSO4 + CdS 22.2 + 218.0 < 216.2 + 33.9 Finally, certain other aspects of the chemistry of comminution, which are neither mentioned by Professor Gaudin nor referred to by me are to be found in a paper by Welsh" and in the printed discussion thereof. A. M. Gaudin (author&apos;s reply)—The observations contributed by Dr. Hosking are indeed welcome, as they add to our experimental knowledge of a topic which is believed to be of the first importance. In connection with the experiments cited it should be kept in mind that oxidation, hydration, and carbonation at various rates should always be deemed to be possibilities when grinding is done in water or in air, even in "industrially dry" air. Special precautions might lead to sufficient minimizing of these reactions and to the assertion, instead, of deliberately-created reactions. THE PROPERTY of the Lamaque Mining Company, Limited, ?is located in the Town of Bourlamaque, seventy miles east of Noranda, in Bourlamaque township, Abitrbi county, north western Quebec. Gold production commenced at Lamaque in April, 1935, with an initial mill capacity of 250 tons per day. The capacity was doubled in November of the same year, and in December, 1937, it further increased to 1,200 tons per day. During the war years the mill operated at a reduced tonnage, but in 1951 milling units were added along with complementary crushing and shop facilities to bring the capacity to 1,500 tons per day. Finally, in 1953, the capacity was raised to 2,000 tons per day, which rate is being maintained at the present time. The total production at Lamaque from April 2nd, 1935, to December 31st, 1956, has been 9,168,901 tons of ore from which 2,208,168 ounces of gold was recovered. The total value of this production , excluding E.G. M.À.*, was $77,869,653.

IN THE early evening of October 15, 1954, a large specially designed truck, convoyed by a second smaller one, arrived at Silver Bell, Arizona, completing a ten-hour 110-mile journey from Phoenix. The big truck was driven through gaps left in a previously prepared concrete foundation, the load was jacked up, the large girders that constituted the bed of the truck were pulled away, and the load was then lowered into place on the foundation. A crew of two men, the two truck drivers, finished the job in a little more than an hour. When they were through, a complete and attractive three-bedroom house, prefabricated in Phoenix, was almost ready for occupancy. About all that remained to do was to connect the utilities-water, electricity, plumbing, and gas. The kitchen and bathroom equipment and appointments were superior in every respect, and there was a built-in car port for the automobile of the prospective residents. This family domicile was one of more than one hundred, each averaging about $8,000 in cost, that the American Smelting and Refining Company has provided for its employees engaged in mining and milling 7,500 tons per day of low-grade Porphyry copper ore. Aside from the fact that it is more economical-partly because of the variety of union craftsmen needed to build and equip a house-to do the work in a city 110 miles away, the significant point is the high quality of housing that is provided for what may be called in nostalgic vein the "mining camp" of 1955. No attempt will be made here to review the previous work done by investigators on the general subject of inclusions, because it was discussed sufficiently in an early cooperative bulletin of this series (No. 36, 1928), and reference was then made to general bibliographies. The work described in this present bulletin deals directly with the study of the mechanism of deoxidation of steel with aluminum and the formation of inclusions containing alumina. Unquestion- ably, such inclusions are encountered in most steel-making practices and little has been done to determine their characteristics. Aluminum is used to ensure rapid deoxidation during the solidification stages of the steel. For this reason the possibilities of inclusion elimination are slight and alumina-containing particles will undoubtedly be present in the ingot. Besides this common practice, aluminum is often used in the ladle with other deoxidizing agents such as silicon and manganese. Ladle additions of aluminum are made to rimming steels to obtain the correct partial deoxidation desired in this type of steel. In killed steels the aluminum is added to ensure soundness, as far as blowholes are concerned, in the ingot. In either rimmed or killed steels, alumina or alumina-containing inclusions are found therein, the amount and type depending on the oxidation of the metal, the amount of aluminum added, and the addition of other deoxidizers.

The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date, and it is being published as a similar series of seven miners&apos; Circulars (Nos. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: Accident Statistics (Miners&apos; Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.
