F. C. Bond (Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Corp., Milwaukee) —This paper considers comminution as a first order process, with the reduction rate depending directly upon the amount of oversize material present. The data show that other factors should be taken into account, and it is possible that in time these may be evaluated as simultaneous or consecutive reactions: Development of the theory of comminution has been retarded for many years by the assumption that surface area measurements constitute the sine qua non of the work done in crushing and grinding, and it is encouraging to note the belated growth of other ideas. In the Abstract the term "net power" should be changed to "net energy." Throughout the paper the term "hp per ton" should be changed to "hp hrs per ton", or "hp hr t." The term "Probability Theory" in the title does not seem appropriate, since it is not clear how the probability theory is used in developing the ideas in the paper. There seems to be a contradiction between the large calculated advantages of closed circuit operation and the statement following that the closed circuit test results showed no significant change in grinding behavior, when compared with the batch grind curves. Tables I and II show that between 75 pct and 50 pct solids the energy input required decreases with increasing moisture content and may indicate the advisability of grinding at higher dilutions in certain cases. The calculation of the hp-hr per ton factor indicates an input in the laboratory mill of only 7.32 gross hp per ton of balls; this casts some doubt upon the accuracy of the factor used, since the power input in commercial mills at 80 pct critical speed is customarily much higher. The tests show that within fairly wide limits the amount of ore in the laboratory mill may be varied and a product of constant fineness obtained, provided that the grinding time is varied in the same proportion. This has often been assumed, and confirmation by actual testing is of value. The Cavg corrections for differences between the plant and laboratory size distributions do not seem very satisfactory, since in many cases the plant/laboratory ratio is farther from unity after correction than before. The following equation has been derived from the data in Table VI: Relative Energy (log new ball diam in in. + 0.410) Input = --------------—--------------- from which the relative energy inputs for balls of different sizes can be calculated and compared. The relative energy input is unity for balls of 2.715 in. diam. The equation indicates that the work accomplished by a ton of grinding balls per unit of energy input is roughly proportional to the square root of the total ball surface area; provided, of course, that the balls are sufficiently large to break the material. The data in support of this statement are admittedly meager, but are fairly consistent when plotted. The relative grindability values listed in Table VI for 200 mesh multiplied by 4/5 apparently correspond approximately to the A-C grindability at 200 mesh.' It would seem that for open circuit tests comparable accuracy could be obtained much more simply by the old method' of plotting the test grind, extending the mesh grinds to the left of zero time if necessary, and determining from the plot the equivalent time required to grind from the plant feed size to the plant product size, using the average of several mesh sizes. The en- ergy input value of one time interval could be determined by tests on materials of known grinding resistance, and this multiplied by the interval required should give the desired energy input value. The relative grindabilities would be the relative time intervals required for a specified feed and product size. When the plotted mesh size lines of a homogeneous material are extended to the left beyond zero time they meet at one point at zero pct passing. The horizontal distance of this point from zero time indicates the equivalent energy input required to prepare the mill feed. The author's results show that the closed circuit grinding tests give about the same K values as open circuit tests, from which he concludes that open circuit tests are satisfactory in many cases. The value of the closed circuit test is its ability accurately to predict energy requirements in closed circuit grinding for both homogeneous and heterogeneous materials. If the material is homogeneous, the open circuit test gives satisfactory results; but if the material contains appreciable fractions of hard and soft grinding ore, the open circuit tests will not be accurate because of the accumulation of hard grinding material in the circulating load. Since in most cases it is not possible to determine a priori whether the material contains hard and soft fractions, the closed circuit tests are preferable and more reliable. B. S. Crocker (Lake Shore Mines, Ontario)—Dr. Roberts probability theory of grinding is very similar to our log pct reduced vs. log tonnage method of plotting and evaluating grinding tests at Lake Shore. However, although we both seem to start at the same point we finish with different end results. Shortly after publishing our grinding paper (referred to by Dr. Roberts) in 1939, we did pursue the subject of the "constant pct reduction in the pct +28 micron material for each constant interval of time. We ran innumerable tonnage tests on the plant ball mills, rod mills, tube mills with 11/4 and 3/4 balls, and lastly pebble mills, with tonnage variations from 180 tons per day to 950 tons per day. We found that when we plotted the log of the tonnage against the log of the pct reduced of any reliable mesh, we had a straight line up until 90 pct of the mesh is reduced. We have also tested this in our 12-in. laboratory mill with the same results. We have used this method of evaluating grinds for the past 8 years and developed the recent four stage pebble plant on this basis. By pct reduced we mean the percentage of any given mesh that is reduced in one pass through a mill at a given tonnage (or time). For example, if the feed to a rod mill is 90 pct +35 mesh and the discharge at 500 tons per day is 54 pct +35, the pct reduced is 90 — 54/90 = 40 pct. If the feed had been 80 pct +35 the discharge would have been 48 pct +35 or pct re- duced 80-48/80 = 40 pct as long as the tonnage re- mained constant at 500 tons per day. Thus we can easily correct for normal variation of mill feeds. This log — log relationship derived from the tonnage tests of all our operating mills has proved of tremendous help in checking laboratory work and in designing alternate layouts or new plants. The difference between the log — log and the semi-log plot is only shown up when the extremes in tonnages are plotted. WITH all the advantages of handling bulk materials by means of belt conveyor also go some problems, one of the most persistent being that of cleaning. When sticky materials are being carried; the build-up of material on the return idler rolls results in difficulty of belt training. Much attention has been given to the problem of cleaning conveyor belts, and a great variety of cleaning devices have been developed. Even the best involve troublesome maintenance, and none can completely remove the fine particles imbedded in the belt cover, which cause rapid wear of the return idler rolls, and at the same time, of the belt cover as well. One of the major rubber companies has been promoting a two-way belt system, in which the conveyor belt is given two successive 90" twists at each end to enable it to carry material in both directions simultaneously. For many years the flat belt transmission industry has installed quarter-turn and half-turn twists in countless numbers of instances. While quarter-turn and half-turn twists in transmission belts is a familiar application, the 180" twist apparently has never been previously attempted with a conveyor belt. About a year ago, two officials of the National Iron Co. of Duluth, Lester and Lewis Erickson, proposed twisting the return run of a conveyor belt on an installation that they were designing for one of the major iron ore producers. Since then the soundness of the idea has been demonstrated, both in theory and by practical test, with the result that the installation of two conveyor belts involving the twisting of the return run is now under way. These two installations are designed to have the return run of the conveyor belt twisted 180" as it leaves the snub pulley at the head drive. The clean underside of the belt is thus placed against the idlers on the return run as well as on the carrying run. Just before it enters the tail pulley, the belt will be twisted an additional 180°, restoring it to its normal position. Because this twisting of the return run of a conveyor belt is a radical departure from accepted practice, an elaborate and extensive test was conducted early in 1950 to demonstrate that this twisting of the return run could be done successfully, also to establish application data for accomplishing this twisting, and to determine if any special equipment would be required. In studying this concept of twisting the return run of a conveyor belt, a number of problems need to be solved, primarily the ones brought about by deliberately introducing an unequal distribution of stress across the conveyor belt and controlling that maldistribution of stress, while confining it to the return run portion. The tension conditions existing in the return run of a conveyor belt are clear to all designers. First, the return run carries the initial or slack side tension of the conveyor belt, the tension that must be supplied to the return run to provide proper frictional contact between the belt and the driving pulley so that the necessary power can be transmitted from the driving pulley to the belt without slippage. This slack side tension is supplied to the belt by means of takeups, either of the gravity type, which can be vertical or horizontal, or by means of the screw type. With inclined or declined belt conveyors the slope tension also must be considered, which is the tension imposed by the weight of the belt hanging from the top pulley. This slope tension frequently can furnish part or even all of the initial tension required. The maximum value of the slope tension will be at the top pulley, and it decreases in direct proportion to the length. In addition to the foregoing, it frequently is desirable to impose arbitrarily additional slack side tension to provide sufficient tension at the loading point at the tail, so that the belt will adequately support its load between the carrying idlers. Design Conditions for Twisting A number of design conditions exist, which must be satisfied successfully to accomplish the twisting of the return run without exceeding normal working limits in any portion of the conveyor belt. It is obvious that the belt edge, in its relation to the center of the belt, must stretch in making a twist, because as the twist is accomplished, the belt edge travels through a longer path than does the center of the belt. It is further obvious that if the edge of the belt is stretched, a redistribution of stress in the belt is required to allow this edge stretching. Moreover, this stress will be unequal across the width of the belt, having a maximum value at the edges, with a minimum value at the- center of the belt. With correct initial tension in the return run of a conveyor belt, the existing slack side tension will be unequally distributed when a twist is introduced. A condition then exists in which the edge stresses,

While conducting an investigation on electrolytic reduction of magnesium oxide in 1943, it became necessary to obtain accurate data on the conductivity and density of various mixtures of fused chlorides. AZ the required information was not available in the technical literature, or there were inconsistencies in the data from several investigators, an independent study was made at the Bureau of. Mines laboratory at Salt Lake City on the conductivity and density of the molten chlorides MgCl2, CaCl2, BaCl2, KCl, and NaCl and the binary mixtures of MgCl2 with the other four chlorides. Studies were also made on the binary system KCl-CaCl2 and on certain portions of several ternary systems. Measurements covered a temperature range from the melting point to 1,000° C. The results of this study were reported in an intra-Bureau report prepared early in 1944. Since then the Bureau of Mines has received several requests for data on fused chlorides; the results of the previous study, therefore, are being published to make the data available.

EIGHT years ago in this department we had a column on the daiquiri cocktail, which, as we pointed out at that time, was invented by mining engineers. Since then we have said little or nothing about alcoholic drinks, but having set the precedent perhaps we may now pass along a little information about martinis. We have observed that as an aperitif the martini has become increasingly popular with men, so much so that we always feel a bit peculiar if we order something else. And the call is not for just a martini either; it must be a dry martini, and some of our friends are extremely particular on this point. The matter has achieved such importance that The New York Times devoted half a page to it a few Sundays back. Several recipes are given which may be useful to some of our members when entertaining visitors from this part of the country: The standard martini is said to be half gin, half Italian vermouth, two dashes orange bitters, and a pickled onion and twist of lemon peel. This progresses to the very dry martini, which calls for five parts gin and one part vermouth with an onion, olive, or lemon peel. Several alternatives are offered for the manufacture of the very, very dry martini. One is to pour a little vermouth into the mixing glass and pour it out again before mixing gin and ice. A second way is to put the ice in a sieve, hold it over the sink, and pour a little vermouth over it; then put the ice in the mixing glass. A third is to let the draft from an electric fan blow across an open vermouth bottle toward the mixing glass. Then the ultimate is the awfully dry martini, obtained by setting the vermouth bottle next to the mixing glass and turning the bottle slowly so that the label is exposed to the gin for perhaps a second. The Times notes that Mr. Martini himself personally prefers vermouth and soda.

A method for treating high-iron Arkansas bauxites for recovering both abrasive and metal-grade bauxite has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. Present practice usually produces a reject containing appreciable quantities of metal-grade bauxite; however, the processing renders the alumina in the reject unsuitable for the Bayer extraction treatment. Thus the Arkansas abrasive bauxite industry has, in the past, produced little or no metal-grade bauxite. The present investigation was made to determine the possibilities of batter utilization of those particular bauxites through recovery of the wasted metal-grade portion. The large expansion of aluminum-production facilities planned for 1951-53 makes recovery of metal-grade bauxite from presently treated abrasive and marginal abrasive ores en especially timely objective and a welcome addition to our aluminum potential. The quality of the Arkansas bauxites and the inherently associated titania content have made this material particularly attractive to the abrasives industry. however, the gradual depletion of natural abrasive-grade bauxite reserves in this area, the comparative scarcity of high-grade ore, and the difficulty of maintaining adequate reserves have necessitated blending different grades of bauxite calculated to meet specifications. Production of abrasive-grade bauxite from tile, high-iron reserves 13 becoming, increasingly necessary. In one commercial operation, producing abrasive-grade from ores averaging slightly less than 10 percent Fe2O3, approximately 2.7 tons of ore are required to produce 1 ton of abrasive-grade bauxite. The reserves of ore of this grade, however, have been considered inadequate for a long-range production, and ultimately ores averaging 12 to 15 percent Fe2O3 will have to be treated to moot the continued demands of the abrasive industry.

THE properties and casting characteristics of sand-cast Mg-Al-Zn alloys, used commercially in this country and abroad, have been discussed in a number of articles during the past few years.'-" In addition, broad surveys of many compositions in the magnesium corner of the Mg-Al-Zn diagram between 0 and 12 pct A1 and 0 and 6 pct Zn have been presented by Busk and Marande7 and by Fox." The purpose of this paper is to furnish a comprehensive survey of the changes in tensile properties, micro-structure, and dimensional stability of two magnesium alloys, AZ92A and AZ63A,+ as a function of aging time and temperature after solution heat treatment. Rates of precipitation in Mg-Al-Zn alloys are slow enough so that a substantially homogeneous, supersaturated solid solution can be maintained even when these alloys are air-cooled from the heat-treating temperature. Consequently, even though it has been demonstrated9 10 that significantly higher strengths can be developed in some alloys in the aged condition by quenching rather than air cooling from the heat-treating temperature, general practice is to air-cool magnesium alloys. All the work discussed in this paper is based, therefore, on aging studies performed on material air-cooled from the heat-treating temperature. This investigation was intended to be a study of commercially practical aging cycles; the tensile properties were determined, therefore, up to aging times of 25-hr duration. The alloys, used in this investigation were prepared in the laboratory by remelting commercial ingots of the appropriate composition according to the procedures described in a previous paper" as the "crucible method." All melts were given the standard superheating treatment in order to insure the maintenance of a uniform grain size of 0.003 to 0.004 in. Standard test bars, 61/2 in. long with a 2½ in. long reduced section having a diameter of Y2 in., were cast from these melts in green-sand molds using a four-bar pattern. The alloys were heat treated according to the following schedules: AZ92A alloy: 500" to 780°F in 2 hr + 780°F (24 hr) AZ63Aalloy: 500" to740°Fin2 hr + 740°F (16hr) In commercial practice," AZ92A alloy is heat treated at 770°F for 18 hr and AZ63A alloy is heat treated at 730°F for 10 hr. THE widespread occurrence of manganese in low grade oxide and carbonate ores not amenable to mechanical concentration has led to extensive investigations of hydrometallurgical methods for producing a pure manganese compound suitable for further treatment. Manganese carbonate is the preferable compound. This product when fully crystalline and of not too fine crystal size is easily filtrable and stable in air. It can be converted to other compounds such as the oxides by heating in air or can be reacted with acids for producing salts. A useful hydrometallurgical process must produce relatively concentrated solutions that can be purified easily, reagents must be cyclically used, and heat requirements must be small. Neither the ammonium sulphate nor sulphur dioxide leaching processes that have been tested extensively fulfill these 'requirements. Other hereto-fore proposed processes have obvious limitations and have not been tried on a large scale. The present process is based on the discovery by the writer of a new group of aqueous manganese-ammonia complex solutions highly concentrated in ammonia, which permit rapid solution of manganous oxide to concentrations of 80 to 100 g Mn per liter and from which a fully crystalline, easily filterable manganese carbonate is precipitated by the addition of carbon dioxide and partial ammonia removal. Although the process may be carried out with many ammonium salts, commercial advantages dictate the use of ammonium carbamate, which is obtained when CO2 is passed into concentrated aqueous solutions of ammonia. If the carbamate is used, the only reagents, ammonia and C02, are volatile and may therefore be recovered from solutions and residues by heating, thus eliminating washing and extensive evaporation. Impurities are controlled easily as most metal oxides are either insoluble in the lixiviant or fail to precipitate with the manganese carbonate. Others are controlled by sulphide addition. The process has been tested extensively on a small scale on a wide variety of ores; including Three Kids, Artillery Peak, Cuyuna, and Chamberlain; as repre-

A few years ago an Indian native of British Columbia drew the attention of white men,' to a deposit of a claylike material on King Island, at the mouth of Dean River just opposite Hunter Island in the Pacific Ocean (Fig 1 ) . The native claimed that this natural product, which is found not in solid form but either as a paste or as a thick, viscous liquid, exhibited exceptional healing properties not only for various types of skin irritation but also for internal ailments. He pointed out that the natives had been using this material very successfully for generations. Since then, systematic surveys have revealed that the deposit, covered by a humus layer of varying thickness, is far more extensive than had originally been assumed. The product as mined today is of puttylike consistency and of greenish color. If exposed to air it dries rapidly, forming a slightly gray, rather brittle product, which does not permit redispersion to its original consistency. When the natural product is rubbed on the skin, however, the presence of coarse, sandy material is revealed.

Scraper With over 40 pet more struck capacity than previous models, the new Caterpillar No. 90 scraper is designed to increase earthmoving production when used with D8 tractor power. This scraper moves dirt with the aid of a hard surfaced, reversible cutting edge. Material is carried in a flat, doublebottom bowl of high tensile steel. Operation is by means [ ] of a cable-control unit, which can be mounted on the rear of the tractor to provide for positive loading and ejection. Tapered roller bearings are installed at each axle. The scraper uses two 24.00 to 29 front tires and two 27.00 to 33 rear tires, all four of 24-ply rating. When loaded, the scraper distributes 60 pet of the weight on the rear tires. Circle No. 1

DEVELOPMENT of the cement industry in Mexico began some 40 years ago. It has gradually reached great importance in the economic life of the country and has contributed greatly to the technical and economical advances which have been so noteworthy, particularly during the last 15 years. From a modest start, the industry now comprises 18 cement-producing plants having a potential annual capacity of approximately 14 million bbl. About half the plants were built and equipped with second-hand machinery during the last world war when no new machinery could be procured. They will hardly attain full production before being modernized and reconditioned, a job now under way in several of the plants. At present, the yearly consumption is only about 8 to 9 million bbl but is steadily increasing. This is only a fraction of the cement consumed in the U.S.A., which is about 250 million bbl per year, although on the basis of consumption per capita per year, the figure is 1/3 bbl for Mexico and 1 2/3 bbl for the U.S.A. Cement consumption in Mexico is well above the average of all other Latin American countries, with the exception of the Argentine, and considering the potentialities and undeveloped riches of Mexico, the road construction and irrigation works, it is fair to assume that the Mexican cement industry will still prosper and expand in spite of temporary setbacks in the future caused by-local events of economic or political nature. Portland cement is manufactured by burning a mixture of raw materials, one of which is mainly composed of calcium carbonates and the other of aluminum silicates. The most typical materials answering this description are limestone and clay, both of which occur in Mexico in many varieties. To be usable for cement manufacture limestone should contain at least 77 to 80 pct calcium carbonate. Lower grade limestone can be used for cement manufacture only if the lime content is increased by the beneficiation process, which has not yet been adopted by the Mexican cement industry. Most of the limestone used by Mexican cement plants has a calcium carbonate content of 90 to 95 pct and therefore requires addition of one or several correction materials. A typical composition of raw mix for cement manufacture is 85 pct limestone and 15 pct shale, clay or volcanic materials. Occasionally it is necessary to add a smaller amount of sand or other siliceous material to increase the silica ratio in the raw mix. Likewise, it is sometimes necessary to add 1 or 2 pct iron ore to facilitate fusion in the kiln and to obtain proper relation between alumina and iron oxide. After calcining and

The Quapaw pool is one of the smaller pools in an extensive area of Bartlesville-sand production in the eastern part of Osage County, Okla. (fig. 1). Most of the fields in this area were discovered from 1906 to 1916 and were developed and operated similarly. The Quapaw pool is representative of the area, and much of the developed in studying this pool is applicable to the other reservoirs. This petroleum-engineering study of the Quapaw pool was conducted to provide reservoir data that may aid in more widespread application of the intensive secondary-recovery production methods that have been employed with excellent results in the Bartlesville-sand fields of nearby Washington, Nowata, and Rogers Counties. This study is particularly appropriate because of the intense interest in Osage County fields as areas suitable for water flooding. Water flooding was introduced first into Oklahoma during 1931 in Rogers County, and activity was concentrated in the shallow Bartlesville-sand fields of and Nowata Counties for many years. Although water-flooding projects are now operating throughout the State, the intense activity of the Nowata-Rogers Counties area spread to adjoining counties only during the past few years. Since 1948 the rate of oil production in Washington County (between Nowata and Osage Counties) has increased by 260 percent as a result of water flooding. Currently, leases in eastern Osage County are sought eagerly by water-flood operators, and during the past 2 years the Osage Indian Agency has issued nine permits for water-flooding projects in eastern Osage County. Water-flooding operations are in progress on several projects. Although large oil reserves in eastern Osage County should, be recoverable by water flooding, development and operation of projects will be more expensive than projects in the shallower producing areas to the east. In addition, the Osage County reservoirs appear to be more complex and somewhat more difficult to water-flood successfully. It is hoped that this study will contribute to better understanding of the Quapaw reservoir and, in a general way, to the many similar reservoirs in eastern Osage County.

An important phase in the Bureau of Mines investigation of electrical machines designed for operation in gassy coal mines is testing enclosures of electrical components for explosion-proof qualities. In brief, this testing consists of filling and surrounding the enclosure with an explosive atmosphere of methane and air and then igniting the atmosphere within the enclosure to determine (1) Whether the resulting explosion is confined without discharge of flame; (2) whether the enclosure walls are permanently distorted; and (3) whether excessive pressures are developed within the enclosure. Ordinarily, the pressures encountered in routine testing do not exceed 100 pounds per square inch gage. Hence, the designer of the machine does not have too much difficulty in taking corrective measures to prevent flame discharge and distortion of the enclosure. Occasionally, however, the explosion pressures greatly exceed 100 pounds. Then the goblet of the designer may not be solved so readily, From experience over the year 0, the testing personnel often can predict that certain construction will result in high. Pressures, but, only in a very general way, has it been possible to advise designers what modifications might be made to reduce the explosion pressures to normal values. For example, if high pressures were developed in a motor starter having a partition with an opening through it, some enlargement of the opening may appear to be the logical procedure, but it has not been- possible to give information concerning the exact amount the opening should be enlarged to prevent development of high pressures .

Extensive data of minimum creep rates and rupture times for high purity and commercial aluminum confirm the existence of a transition range from the low temperature-type to the high temperature-type behavior. The data are analyzed in line with the suggested theories of deformation of metals. CONSIDERABLY more work has been done on the rupture and creep behavior of commercial alloys than on the less complex, high purity metals. As a result, certain fundamental behaviors are overlooked. One of the lesser known variables affecting the high temperature behavior of metals is the impurity content (or alloy content). Impurities are known to affect strongly the recrystallization temperature, electrical resistivity, and other properties of metals, but the effect on creep and other high temperature mechanical properties has been determined for very few materials. In view of these facts aluminum appears to be a fairly ideal metal, since it is available in a wide range of purity contents from 99.995+ down through the 2s (99.0 + Al) and 3s (1.2 Mn) grades in small steps. It is highly resistant to oxidation and other surface instabilities, leaving recrystallization and grain growth as virtually the only instabilities. Control of grain size is also well standardized. Limited data on the creep of aluminum have been obtained by Dushman et a1.l for high purity aluminum; by Sherby2 on 2s aluminum of variable grain size; and by Dorn and Tietz³ on cold-worked 3s aluminum. Experimental Procedure The apparatus consisted of a constant stress, creep testing unit similar to the type described by Hop-kin.' The specimens were held at temperature for 30 min before loading. The loading time was less than 2 min. Factors affecting the accuracy of the data were: 1-—the temperature gradient and control, ± 3°F; 2-the stress determinations, ± 1.5 pct; and 3—elongation measurements (1 in. gage), ? 0.001 in. Three grades of aluminum were tested: 1— high purity (99.995 pct Al), 2—2s (99.3 pct Al), and 3—3s (98.2 pct Al). The spectrographic analyses of these materials are reported in Table I. The specimens were annealed then electropolished in a perchloric-acetic mixture before testing. Data on heat treatments and grain size obtained appear in Table 11. The entire creep curve was determined for almost all of the tests. A few tests were interrupted after the beginning of the third stage of creep, and in these cases the rupture time was estimated. Experimental Results Constant stress creep-rupture testing gives a much longer, more accurately measurable second stage of creep than constant load testing. This behavior is in agreement with the results obtained by Andrade for lead (see Fig. 1). If the test is run to completion, the third stage of creep appears as soon as stress intensification occurs. In the case of specimens which fail in a ductile manner, the stress intensification begins when the sample starts "necking". This differs from the "high temperature brittle" specimens in which the stress intensification is caused by intercrystalline cracking. These specimens

The engineering personnel shortage, present and impending, so well brought out in the article in Mining Engineering in the August, 1951 number, both in the editorial lead and the article by William B. Plank and Henry J. Petrie, has left untapped and has ignored a potential source of supply that would fill the need ably and with complete satisfaction. This source is comprised of the women engineers- and geologists, both presently, trained and able to handle work at all levels, and the many who would make splendid engineers and geologists if they could hope for even a modest taste of the square deal that should be theirs, but, as we all know, is not. I write from experience. It is not pleasant or sensible to have to urge borderline cases among men students to consider engineering and geology as careers to fill the need, when I have far more able, interested and suited young women students whom I must divert into other channels. It does not make sense to scrape the bottom and sides of the barrel to induce potentially second or third rate male engineers and geologists to enter the profession when we have superior material among the women, eager to do good work in these fields. It does not make sense for these men to become second or third rate in these fields when they might be first rate salesmen, musicians, advertising copywriters or policemen. Nor does it make any more sense to force potentially first rate female geologists and engineers to become second or third rate and very frustrated typists, kindergarten teachers, dress sales-women or clerks. At this point I am willing to admit that where superstitious -miners object to women in underground workings, men are available for the jobs. Moreover, it is not necessary for women to be sent into the most difficult country, if there is reluctance on either side of the contract. There may be fewer of them eager for the roughest assignments, in proportion to the men, but women are so accustomed to discrimination far more complete than that against any racial or religious group, that a reasonably tough assignment would seem like a heaven-descended joy. In my own experience, I have found that my girl students majoring in geology, could keep up with me in the field in the roughest terrain, but. the men, all but the best students and the most physically fit young men, complained that they could not keep up with me and that I always "walked their-legs off. The women, a few men and I always returned with bags heavy with well chosen specimens and proper notes. Most of the men carried no specimens and-but poor scraps of notes on loose bits of paper. Yet the men were urged to prepare for a career in engineering or geology if their examination marks were reasonably good. When we find that we still have a shortage of engineers and geologists, after putting all the qualified women to work, then we may begin to worry. Early in the nineteenth century, coal from Clearfield County entered the eastern commercial market. Ashley reports that coal was moved down the Susquehanna River by ark from Clearfield to Columbia, a distance of 260 miles, as early as 18o4. Around 1850, the famous Moshannon or Lower Freeport bed was discovered. Several years later the Moshannon Basin was developed extensively, and the coal from this area soon acquired an enviable reputation as a high-quality industrial fuel. Today much of the original Moshannon Basin coal is worked out, and the Lower Kittanning bed has replaced the Lower Freeport bed as the principal source of production in southeast Clearfield County. With depletion of the thick underground deposits, the importance 'of Clearfield County as a coal Producer would have diminished rapidly, if it had not been for strip mining the thinner beds. About 60 percent of the coal produced in the county is strip-mined, and the trend toward this mining method is expected to continue as the older underground operations are exhausted. Many strip mines are working in beds that are too thin to be recovered economically by any other method.

The increasing demands for petroleum and its products and the steadily increasing cost of discovering and developing new oil fields are factors that emphasize the importance of increasing the recovery of oil from known petroleum reserves. Water flooding is a valuable conservation measure, not only preventing premature abandonment of stripper leases but also reviving interest in many areas previously abandoned. The use of water flooding as a means for recovering additional oil from partly depleted oil-bearing formations was first tried in Oklahoma in 1931. Early water-flooding operations were confined to the area of shallow Bartlesville-sand formations in Nowata and Rogers Counties, where many of the projects were outstandingly successful. The results of these operations stimulated activities in other pools in Oklahoma, and by the end of 1949 water flooding had been tried in 25 of the 49 oil-producing counties in the State (fig. 1). Approximately 33 million barrels of oil, or 1,806 barrels per acre, had been recovered by December 31, 1949, from 18,221 productive acres included in the 162 active and abandoned projects in Oklahoma by injection of approximately 449 million barrels of water.

To prove to .the satisfaction of all concerned that electrolytic manganese from our low-grade domestic ores could be substituted satisfactorily for ferro-manganese made from high-grade foreign fires, an extensive series of tests was conducted in cooperation with industry, in which electrolytic manganese pro-duced by, the Bureau of Mines at its Boulder City, Nev., Station was substituted for the ordinary ferro grades in the production of ferrous and nonferrous metals and alloys and welding-rod coatings. Over 1,200,000 pounds of manganese was given out for this purpose. The objectives of the tests were accomplished, and for some purposes electrolytic manganese was shown to be superior to other grades because of its high purity. The only serious objection that can be raised against electrolytic manganese is its price, which puts it out of reach for most purposes. Even if the price were to be lowered to a point where it would be in line with ferro grades, it is questionable whether electrolytic manganese from domestic ores could supply more than a small part of the needs of American industry because of the large volume of domestic ore that would have to be processed to supply a satisfactory feed for the electrolytic process. Thus, although electrolytic manganese is highly desirable from a metallurgical standpoint, it could not be expected to substitute for more than a fraction of our domestic manganese requirements.

THE BARRIER-PILLAR SYSTEM in the Lackawanna Basin consists of 93 barrier pillars between Archbald and Taylor, Pa. These pillars affect 48 mines, have a total length of 87 miles, and confine 21 underground pools, which contain more than 10 billion gallons of water. From an investigation of size, position, and condition of the barrier pillars, it is apparent that those concerned are uncertain, not only as to the method by which the sizes of the barrier pillars were determined but also as to the stability of those that may be expected to act as dams. Where a barrier pillar must act as a dam, its failure may result in loss of life, the mine, or both; it would be far better had it not existed and thereby given a false sense of security.

[This investigation of the refractory properties of seven Pacific Northwest chrome ores and concentrates has shown that five of the ores and one of the concentrates are suitable for making refractories and that all may be used in combination with high-grade chromite. The specific objectives of the investigation were to determine the inherent physic al and chemical characteristics, to shapes using each of the chrome ores and concentrates, to compare the refractory qualities of the laboratory-prepared with commercial chrome refractories. As far as possible, standard tests were used as criteria.]
