In 1947 the Bureau of Mines, as an accident-prevention measure, decided to advocate the adoption of roof bolting (suspension roof supports) in coal mines where it appeared to be applicable. Subsequent experience has disclosed that the applicability of this support is more general than was first suspected; moreover, comparison of the accident records of mines before and after adoption of the roof-bolting method shows results that more than justify the effort and funds expended. The industry has responded enthusiastically, because roof bolting proved to be not only an accident-prevention measure but also one to increase productive efficiency. In some instances this increase in the productivity of men and machines has been almost incredible and has led many mining men to conclude that through some hocus-pocus they can now cast aside many or all of the time-proven rule of good mining practice. If this tendency is not counteracted, it could easily result in an increase of roof-fall accidents, which may outweigh the benefits of roof bolting and discredit an innovation in roof control that shows great promise of materially reducing our mining accidents. From an economic standpoint it may represent the margin between profit and loss in many mining operations. The purpose of this manuscript is not to propose an inflexible code or set of rules but to summarize the experience to date as a guide for those who have the responsibility for the installation and inspection of roof bolts. This experience consists of approximately 250 investigations of roof failure in which roof bolting was involved either directly or indirectly. It should be pointed out that many of these failures were controlled, occurring during experimental periods, and comparatively few of the accidental failures actually resulted in personal injury, yet a significant number represented potential hazards.

THIS paper describes (1) the effect of sodium on the tensile ductility of magnesium-lithium base alloys, and (2) the precautions necessary to avoid sodium contamination. Effect of Sodium on Properties The harmful effect of sodium in magnesium-lithium base alloys has been recognized by other investigators.1,2 However, quantitative data on its effect have not hitherto been published. The effect of sodium on the ductility of an 87 pct Mg-9 pct Li-4 pct Zn alloy is shown in fig. 1. The sodium was introduced by adding sodium chloride to the flux, which consisted of 50 pct LiC1-50 pct KC1. Moderately high ductility was obtained at an indicated sodium content of about 0.05 pct. Actually, the value probably was less than 0.05 pct, be-cause analyses of the lithium, which were more accurate than those of the alloy, indicated that the highest ductility was obtained when its sodium content was 0.02 pct or less. In fact, in alloys having somewhat greater strength than this particular composition, the sodium content of the lithium must be under 0.01 pct to avoid embrittlement. The effect of sodium on the ductility of several alloys having fairly low strength levels is shown in fig. 2. These alloys were melted with a flux containing 75 pct LiC1-25 pct LiF, to which various quantities of sodium chloride had been added. Sodium had no significant effect in pure magnesium but markedly decreased the ductility of the magnesium-lithium-zinc alloy, even though the alloy contained only 3 pct Li. As the lithium content of the binary alloys was increased, the ductility of the sodium-free alloys also increased. However, the effect of sodium on ductility became progressively more pronounced. Sodium raised the minimum hot-rolling temperatures, particularly those of the high-strength alloys, but its effect, in this respect, was less critical than its effect on tensile ductility. For optimum cold roll-ability, a low-sodium content was required. No deleterious effect of sodium on the stability of properties at slightly elevated temperatures was found. Control of Sodium in the Alloys Optimum ductility is obtained in the magnesium-lithium base alloys when sodium-free materials are used. Commercial lithium was formerly the chief source of contamination. Now purified lithium is usually available. When lithium of ordinary purity is used, the effects of sodium can be minimized by using a flux consisting of 75 pct LiC1-25 pct LiF. Bubbling nitrogen through the melt also helps remove sodium. The damaging influence of sodium on the ductility of the magnesium-lithium base alloys was observed very early in the alloy development program. The discovery came about as a result of chemical analyses made on the lithium used in the alloys. Ductile alloys had been made from lithium containing about 0.2 pct Na, whereas the lithium used in the brittle alloys contained about 0.9 pct Na. The first magnesium-lithium alloys were melted under commercial fluxes ordinarily used in melting magnesium alloys. These fluxes were unsuited for scavenging the contaminating sodium, and the resulting alloys were not ductile. Next, a flux containing 50 pct KC1-50 pct LiCl was tried. This was somewhat more effective but still was not satisfactory. After a number of different experimental fluxes had been investigated, one containing 75 pct LiC1-25 pct LiF was adopted. Production of oil from a narrow shoestring sand presents problems unique in the oil industry. Especially important, from both an engineering end an economic standpoint, are the limitations imposed upon well patterns and spacings by the shape of the field. This report concerns a study of the Paola shoestring, Miami and Franklin Counties, Kane., where well density of 0.85 acre per well was not uncommon to insure profitable primary recovery in a reasonable time. However, such a great number of wells increased the operator's investment and reduced his profit considerably. It was the purpose of this study to investigate various well patterns and spacings applicable to water-flooding a shoestring reservoir and the effect of these factors upon recovery of oil and the most profitable operation of the pool. The designer of well patterns for a shoestring sand should evaluate carefully the edges of the shoestring, even though they may be considered too thin to drill. These comparatively thin edges contain large quantities of recoverable oil; moreover they are resaturated with oil as the pool is water-flooded.

The Bohemia district, situated about 30 miles southeast of Cottage Grove, Oreg., in the Calapooia Range, has been the major producer of lead and zinc in Oregon. Sporadic production has been Maintained from the district since its early discovery about 1858. In 1942, a selective-flotation mill was built at the Champien mine, which operated for only a short time and was forced to close because of the war and lack of labor. The Champion mill reportedly has been operated as a custom mill for the treatment of ore from the Musick and Helena mines, located in the district sometime in the past. This report summarizes the results of laboratory ore-dressing studies made on ore samples from the Musick and Helena Mines.

An absolute calibration has been achieved for sampling and analyzing liquid steel for hydrogen based on Sieverts' values of hydrogen solubility in iron. Further checks were made in nickel, iron-nickel, and 18-8 stainless melts. The sampling method was successfully applied to a large number of commercial steel melts in various types of furnaces. The concurrent problem of sample storage was also solved. THE problem of sampling of liquid steel for hydrogen is more difficult than the problem of analysis. Hydrogen has a greater mobility than any other element; it is the only element that will diffuse out of steel at room temperature. In accordance with the known relation between temperature and diffusivity, the diffusion of hydrogen is extremely rapid at the temperature of liquid steel. Consequently, in the past, attempts to quench molten steel to retain the dissolved hydrogen have not been as successful as similar attempts with nitrogen or oxygen. The retention of hydrogen is especially difficult since it will continue to escape at room temperature even if the molten metal has been rapidly quenched. The hydrogen sampling methods may be classified broadly as (1) the rapid quenching techniques which attempt to preserve super saturation and (2) those methods which attempt to collect the gases evolved as the metal freezes and cools to room temperature. With all methods of sampling but especially with the rapid quenching methods, there is also a concurrent problem of storing the sample until analysis is undertaken. The two problems are interrelated and must be considered together when discussing liquid steel sampling techniques. The major obstacle in liquid steel sampling has been that there was no way of evaluating properly the various sampling and storage techniques which have been developed. It has not been possible to compare the accuracy of the various methods. For evaluation of sampling methods some known standard is required; this may be found in the published work on the equilibrium solubility of hydrogen in liquid iron which has been determined in three separate investigations.1,2,3 The data are shown in table I. Sieverts' original method of obtaining gas solubilities involved measurement of the volume of gas required to saturate the liquid metal contained in an evacuated bulb of known volume. This procedure, improved by introduction of high frequency induction heating, has yielded reproducible results which appear to be entirely dependable. Using Sieverts' method, it has been proved for iron and other metals and alloys that the hydrogen solubility is proportional to the square root of the pressure of the hydrogen gas above the liquid, so that one may work with various partial pressures of hydrogen to put different amounts of hydrogen in solution. From Sieverts' law it is possible to know accurately what amount of hydrogen is dissolved in the liquid metal at the time of sampling. The accuracy of a sampling method may be gauged by reference to this known solubility. It was the purpose of this investigation to develop a method for sampling liquid steel and for storing the sample so that the analytical result would represent the actual hydrogen content of the metal bath. The control of coal dust created and released during the operation of continuous mining machines in bituminous-coal mines of the United States is a problem. The interest manifested in this problem indicates the seriousness of the hazards involved, particularly when the dust has not been abated at its source and has become air-borne. Officials of the Sunnyside No. 1 mine, Kaiser Steel Corp., were confronted with the problem of abating the coal dust created by operation of a recently installed continuous-mining machine, and they requested the aid of representatives of the Coal-Mine Inspection Branch, Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in developing an effective method of allaying the coal dust at its source.

PNEUMATIC processes for converting molten pig iron to steel were the major producers of steel during the latter half of the 19th Century and until shortly after the turn of the century, when these processes began losing ground to their rival—the basic open hearth process. The first pneumatic process for converting molten pig iron to steel was introduced almost simultaneously by Sir Henry Bessemer in England and by William Kelley in the United States during the decade 1850-1860, but it was Bessemer who pushed it to a successful commercial operation. The process itself is so basically simple that it has not lent itself to many extensive or revolutionary improvements since its inception. During the first 30 yr, numerous' designs of vessel and many modifications of practice were tried before the industry standardized on something resembling current practice. The evolution in construction has resulted in proportions and arrangements based more on mechanical expedience than on metallurgical requirements. Many of the early converters were stationary and had to be tapped similarly to the cupola or open hearth furnace. Such types were used for many years in Sweden and Germany, but the rotating or tilting types were favored in England and the United States. There was evident trouble with bottom tuyeres, becAuse about half of the early designs were constructed for side blowing with tuyeres submerged below the metal-bath surface. Even portable tuyeres, introduced from above, were tried. The principal advance, which made bottom blowing practical, was the invention, in 1863, by Henry Bessemer, and subsequent improvement by A. L. Holley, of a detachable bottom so that the tuyere section could be renewed. In the meantime, it was the demonstration, by Robert Mushet, of the value of manganese in overcoming hot-shortness in converter steel, that made the process metallurgically feasible. At first, only the acid practice was used, and Swedish pig iron, because of its low sulphur and phosphorus, was in great demand. The development of a suitable basic lining, by Sidney G. Thomas and Percy G. Gilchrist in 1876-1879, made the process applicable to the high-phosphorus ores of Europe. From the beginning of the use of the Thomas-Gilchrist process, trouble was experienced in obtaining sufficiently high temperatures in the blown metal, particularly in small heats. It is necessary, of course, to have the low-carbon blown metal at a considerably higher temperature for handling from vessel to ladle to molds than is needed for the molten pig iron. All of the increase in temperature in a pneumatic process must be obtained from the heat of combustion of the elements contained in the pig iron plus that from silicon when ferrosilicon is added. In bottom blowing practice, carbon is almost completely burned, but inasmuch as it cannot be oxidized to a higher state of oxidation than to CO when in contact with liquid iron, only a minor portion of the heat-producing capacity is utilized. Under such conditions, it is not considered to be an efficient source of heat. In the acid practice, therefore, silicon and manganese are the large heat producers, are quickly oxidized, and are efficient fuels. Too much manganese, however, thins the slag greatly and tends to promote excessive slopping or throwing of slag and metal from the converter during the blow. Most operators, therefore, like to keep the manganese content of the iron below 0.60 pct, and thus the main source of heat is the silicon, which must be at least 1 pct and sometimes 2 to 3 pct for small blows such as for castings. Ferrosilicon is sometimes added during the blow to obtain an adequate temperature level. In the basic (Thomas) practice, even more heat is required, because cold lime is added to flux the phosphorus after it is oxidized, and the basic slag must be maintained at a proper temperature. IN a recent paper Kuczynski' studied the rate at which the crack between a metallic plane and a spherical particle of the same material is filled up gradually when heated at temperatures near the melting point. If x is the radius of contact between plane and sphere (fig. I), Kuczynski shows experimentally that x5 = At [1] where t is the time. Assuming that the mechanism of transport of matter is the volume diffusion of vacant lattice sites, he is also able to prove Eq 1 theoretically. The constant A contains as a factor the self-diffusion coefficient of the metal and he shows that the values for this coefficient deduced from his experiments yield the same activation energy as that calculated by other methods, which is a confirmation of this point of view. Kuczynski has also considered theoretically the law of growth of x which would be expected if surface diffusion were the important mechanism. He suggests that x should then obey a law of the form x7 = At, and claims to be able to decide the mechanism involved from the observed law of growth., The purpose of this note is to prove this incorrect. On the contrary, when the mechanism is surface diffusion Eq 1 is also obeyed, but with a different constant A. Following Kuczynski, we suppose the bottom of the crack (surface A A) to have an average radius of curvature p. As a result of this curvature the concentration of adsorbed atoms in this surface, n(p) per cm2, will be smaller, and the concentration of vacant lattice sites in the neighborhood, N(p) per cm3, will be larger than the corresponding concentrations, n(w) and N(w), for a flat surface. THE problem of producing a uniform, medium-fine sand for glass-furnace feed has been of interest to the glass-container industry for many years. In the present investigation of the problem, conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Owens-Illinois Glass Co., Alton, Ill., a satisfactory method of producing such sand was developed. The investigation involved continuous-grinding studies of glass sand with flint and porcelain pebbles, steel balls and rods, and a simultaneous study of classification. The most satisfactory procedure consisted of grinding in a pebble or ball mill followed by a double classification: hydraulic classification to separate the oversize for return to the grinding unit and mechanical classification to remove fines and impurities from the ground sand. The proper application of this flowsheet usually yielded a graded sand containing less iron than the feed even when grinding was done in a steel-lined ball mill. The amount of sand ground into the so-called "dusting" sizes was, in all cases, less than 10 pct. Experiments were made which showed that this very fine sand could be beneficiated to a usable material. Background The advantages in utilizing a uniform, medium-fine sand as a feed for glass furnaces has motivated a considerable amount of research on the ,problem of producing such sand by glass producers and others. For the glass producer, the faster melting rate of such a graded sand offers the possibilities of reduced fuel costs and increased furnace capacity. In addition, there is the likelihood of improving the quality of the melt and thereby reducing the number of seeds (air bubbles) and stones (unrnelted grains) in the finished ware. Although the melting rate of a glass batch depends on other factors in addition to the grain size of the sand, there is experimental evidence to show that grain size influences the melting rate considerably. Potts, Brookover, and Burch' found that when the raw materials (sand, soda ash, and limestone) were always matched in- size, there was a great decrease in the melting time as the grain size of the materials was decreased. They found, too, that when the grain sizes of the soda ash and Limestone were held constant at 40 to 60 mesh, the minimum melting time occurred when 40 to 60 mesh sand was used. The increase in melting time with decrease in grain size beyond 40 to 60 mesh was due, they postulated, to accelerated demixing or separation of batch during melting as the grain size of the sand decreased in relation to the grain size of the other materials. An earlier investigatora found that the highest rate of melting and purifying ordinary glass was obtained when medium-size sand (0.385 to 0.120 mm, correspondingly roughly to 40 to 120 mesh) was used. Although batches containing smaller-size sand were found to fuse more rapidly, the time required to remove air bubbles from such melts actually increased the total duration of the process. Coarsegrained sand, it was stated, increased greatly the times of both melting and purifying. Although the laboratory data are difficult to confirm on a plant scale, observations by the Owens-Illinois Glass Co. indicate a higher furnace capacity of better-quality ware when a medium-fine sand is used in the batch. During the recent war, the glass producer was inclined to overlook a considerable variation in raw materials in the interest of higher production. For instance, table I shows the wide range in the amounts of various screen fractions in sand supplied by one producer to the Terre Haute plant of Owens-Illinois. This paper outlines the development of a program for increasing the life of woolen bags used for filtering Dwight-Lloyd gases by treating the bags and gases with hydrated lime. Methods and apparatus are described for determining alkalinity of dusts, acidity and breaking strength of bag cloth. Procedure and results, based on several years of operation, are presented. DURING 1939, additional facilities were constructed in the Dwight-Lloyd Blast Furnace and Baghouse departments at the Selby, California, Plant of the American Smelting and Refining Co. In order to handle adequately the increased volume of gases from the resultant increase in production, it was necessary to increase gradually the amount of water used for cooling gases ahead of the sinter machine baghouse. As a result of this increased water cooling, the average bag life dropped from 27 months in 1939 to 14 months in 1941. (Table I). This drop in life meant an increased. bag cost, as well as lower recovery of dust and some curtailment of operation. During 1941, it was found new bags showed as high as 0.3 pct acidity* after two weeks of opera- tion and as much as 2.0 pct acidity after some months of operation. This high acidity was present in spite of the fact that free oxide or relative alkalinity of the unburned dust ran from 5 to 6 pct. In view of these circumstances, a twofold program was started in Nov. 1941.t Part one of this program consisted of vigorously dipping all new bags in a weak lime solution, containing 50 lb of hydrated lime per 50 gal of water. Part two consisted of feeding fine, dry, hydrated lime into the gas stream intake of the sinter baghouse fan. Apparatus for feeding this lime is shown in fig. 1. All baghouse chambers are shaken in rotation about once each hour. On alternate hours, the baghouse operator places 50 lb of hydrated lime (one sack) into the lime feeder, starts feeder and immediately starts the bag shaking machinery. The rate at which lime is fed is set to coincide with the approximate time necessary to shake all sinter bag-house chambers, or about 15 min. It is felt this method of lime addition is most effective for getting lime into the woolen bag fabric. The amount of lime so fed averages about 600 lb per day. The amount of lime fed per day is varied to keep a minimum relative alkalinity of 9 pct in the unburned sinter dust. A daily dust sample is taken for alkalinity by allowing dust to accumulate in a sample pipe over a 24-hr period. This sample pipe, placed in any chamber cellar, is 2 in. in diam, 4 ft long, is sealed on the inner end, and capped on the outer end. It has a 1/2 in. slot cut for 18 in. along the tip end. This slot faces upward and allows the pipe to fill gradually with dust as bags are shaken. Breaking strength of bags has, in most cases, been the deciding factor in bag replacement. Bags that normally test 100 psi breaking strength when new are replaced when they test under 35 lb. The method for determining breaking strength is shown in the description accompanying fig. 2. Since the start of the liming program in 1941, bag life has increased from 14 months to an average of over 23 months, with a consequent material decrease in bag cost per year. Acidity, as per cent sulphuric acid, may be determined by means of a Beckman pH meter as follows: From a piece of bag cloth. which has been thoroughly cleaned of dust, a 5 g sample is weighed on a balance. Cut the sample into fine pieces and place in a 400 cc beaker. Add 100 cc (measured) of distilled water and stir vigorously. Filter on suction funnel, holding cloth pulp in beaker with a stirring rod. Wash cloth sample and filter wash water four additional times, each time with 20 cc distilled water, the last time squeezing cloth pulp over funnel. Discard pulp and rinse funnel and filter paper. Pour wash solution jnto measuring graduate and make up to exactly 300 cc with distilled water. Place into clean 600 cc beaker and measure the pH on meter. W. C. Ellis—The intergranular fracture observed by these authors in brass seems to be characteristic of metals when tested under similar conditions. It has been observed by us in room temperature tests on lead alloys subjected to constant stress when the stress has been low enough to afford a small strain rate. If, however, the test be carried out at a high stress and therefore at a large strain rate, a characteristic, tapered, transcrystalline fracture is obtained. The same change of fracture has been observed by others with decrease of strain rate and increase of temperature for other metals—for example aluminum—and may be presumed, as the authors point out, to be general for metals. These findings suggest a plastic flow mechanism under conditions of small strain rate and high corresponding temperature differing from classical block slip. The required conditions point to a process fundamentally diffusive in nature—a less organized process than block slip. Nabarro18 has shown that plastic flow can occur by stress induced diffusion of vacant sites— a process of self-diffusion. Movements of a pseudo-viscous nature at grain boundaries are suggested in the work of Ke.15 Deformation near to a grain boundary by other than a slip mechanism appears necessary to Boas and Hargreaves.19 Wood and Rachinger20 report a cellular structure in slowly deformed alumi- num—the cell size is larger, the higher the temperature and the slower the strain rate. Presumably in the latter case diffusive movements occurred in the cell boundaries. In any case the nonslip mechanism seems somewhat obscure and further work is indicated. Such studies will undoubtedly clarify the nature and behavior of lattice imperfections—the very core of the strength and plastic properties of metals. F. H. Wilson and E. W. Palmer (authors' reply)—It is certain that the metallic behavior which has been termed "creep" includes many interdependent phenomena of which a nonslip type of plastic flow may well be one. The reports to which Mr. Ellis refers are illustrative of the many different observations that must be correlated for a complete understanding of creep. The list could be extended considerably. For example, we ourselves have been impressed by the sensitivity of creep phenomena to the presence of minor impurities and feel that this aspect of the problem warrants more thorough study than it has yet received. In the prevention of accidents in milling operations, the proper installation and guarding of electrical and mechanical equipment, safe clearances, good housekeeping, adequate fire protection, adequate ventilation, dust and fume control, and good illumination, as well as safe practices, are essential. In the new concentrator of the Magna Copper Co., Superior, Ariz., many safeguards were incorporated and safe practices instituted to minimize accident hazards. The purpose of this paper is to describe some of these features and practices.

First, permit me to say with what very great pleasure we find ourselves assembled in this most ancient and honourable city of Quebec. It is a city which we deeply respect as the fountain-head of the culture of French-speaking fellow citizens, and the seat of government of a province which is steadily recording new achievements in Canadian mining. Such achievements prove what can be accomplished when enlightened and progressive government policy, technical and scientific competence, and private initiative pull forward together in harmonious rhythm. It is a most happy and auspicious event also that the guiding control of the affairs of the Institute and of the fine traditions of provincial administration have for the past year been united in the person of our honoured President, Dr. A. O. Dufresne. This year, again, we have bad prepared for us by our hosts a splendid programme of technical sessions and social entertainment. Each year we pay an unspoken compliment to the Institute, expecting as a matter of course nothing but the highest standards in both these spheres. In its annua1, semi-annual, and regional meetings, in the constant activity of its local Branches, the Institute continues with marked success to perform its great dual service, social and educational. We are all its beneficiaries to the extent to which we choose to profit by participation in its affairs. But, one imagines, to none are the advantages of Institute membership more valuable than to young men embarking on their professional careers.

Some serious fires have occurred in bituminous-coal mines because of short circuits on direct-current power systems that do not have adequate circuit-breaker protection. The writer's observation of circuit-breaker installations in numerous coal mines leads to the conclusion that many persons am not properly informed as to the true functions, limitations, and operation of circuit breakers. Faulty protection results in fire hazards that endanger lives and property. Proper circuit-breaker protection would greatly minimize or, in many instances, eliminate the hazards; moreover, many operating advantages of proper application of modern circuit breakers would be gained. The purpose of this circular is to show why fire hazards exist in many mines despite the use of circuit breakers and how, the hazards may be overcome. A method is given for determining whether additional circuit-breaker, protection is required for a specific 250/275-volt direct-current distribution system, and, if so, the approximate locations and capacities of the required supplemental breakers.

In the past, Westmoreland County together with Fayette County produced about one-third of the bituminous coal mined in Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh bed in Westmoreland County has furnished enormous quantities of coal to the by-product and beehive ovens, gas-manufacturing plants, and general industrial manufacturers over a wide area until about 20 years ago. Little attention was paid to the thinner beds because of the superior quality of the Pittsburgh. The approaching exhaustion of Pittsburgh coal will require accelerated-exploitation of these coals if Westmoreland County is to continue as an important source of bituminous coal, Much of the Pittsburgh coal in Westmoreland County is low-sulfur and requires no mechanical cleaning for the preparation of a metallurgical fuel. Even those areas where the sulfur percentage increased to a maximum of about 2 percent, a relatively easy washing operation usually produced a cleaned coal, which found ready acceptance by the coke industry. Davis reported the remaining recoverable reserves of the .Pittsburgh bed in Westmoreland County to be 255,439,000 tons as of January 1, 1937. Since that date, more than 100,000,000 tons of Pittsburgh coal has been extracted so that the time is not too distant when this important coal bed will be depleted. A study of the Pittsburgh bed in Westmoreland -County has not been made a part of this report as the remaining reserves of the coal can be used in coke making with a, minimum of preparation. The production from the Upper 'Freeport bed will increase as the supply of coal from the Pittsburgh bed diminishes, and as of the present time it supplies a substantial proportion of the county's coal output.

The Fort Randall Reservoir project, on the Missouri River at Pickstown, S. Dak., was designed by the Corps of Engineers and is part of the Missouri River Basin Development Program. The location of the project with respect to adjacent features is shown' in figure 1. When the project is finished, it will include a large earthwork dam and 12 circular tunnels, 8 of which will be equipped for power and 4 for flood control. Various phases of the construction have been contracted to independent companies, and at present four companies are working on different phases of the project under a rigid time schedule. Western Contracting Corp. is the contractor on stage II, earthwork; Johnson-Winston Construction Co. is the contractor for construction of the intake towers at the upstream side of the dam; McCarthy Improvement Co. has the contract for the power house and the outlet works on the downstream side; and Silas Mason Co. has the contract for driving the power and flood-control tunnels. The latter two companies use the same roads for ingress and egress to their respective work areas and the same general waste dump area. Under such circumstances, it is necessary that each company stay on a time schedule in regular sequence to avoid interference with the other.

The recrystallization reaction in OFHC and spectroscopically pure copper has been followed by X ray diffraction determinations of the amount of material with the cold-worked and recrystallized textures in specimens which had been given various heat treatments. The heats of activation for recrystallization are found to be: 29.9 kcal per rnol for OFHC copper and 22.4 kcal per rnol for spectroscopic copper. A reliable and speedy method for measuring the amount of recrystallized material in a piece of rolled metal, together with a new scheme for low temperature heat treatment, have made possible a determination of the activation energy for recrystallization in rolled copper. This method for studying recrystallization rates is different from others reported in the literature.' Oxygen free, high conductivity copper—OFHC copper—of purity 99.98 pct gave an activation energy for recrystallization of 29.9 kcal per mol with recrystallization data taken in the temperature range 208-245°C. Copper of purity 99.999 pct from the American Smelting & Refining Co. gave an activation energy for recrystallization of 22.4 kcal per mol with recrystallization data taken in the temperature range 43-135°C. The great change in activation energy for recrystallization as the small amount of impurity in the metal is decreased suggests that the motion of grain boundaries is conditioned by the impurities which must be concentrated in them. Thus the OFHC copper recrystallizes with an activation energy of the order of magnitude to be expected for the diffusion of the kind of impurities likely to be present. The high purity copper, on the other hand, recrystallizes with a much lower activation energy, in accord with the notion that the grain boundaries need not wait for the impurities to diffuse with them. Copper when strongly cold-rolled has a well-defined crystallite texture which can be described by saying that the [111] direction of the face- centered cubic crystals is aligned approximately in the cross-rolling direction and that faces of the form {110} lie approximately in the rolling plane. When such rolled copper is completely annealed the crystallite texture is quite different: the [loo] direction is in the cross-rolling direction and faces of the form (100) are in the rolling plane. At intermediate stages of annealing, the copper contains both textures. If a Geiger counter X ray diffraction spectrometer is set up so as to measure the intensity of the (200) Bragg reflection from the rolled surface of a piece of copper strip, this intensity increases from a very small value in the cold-worked state to a maximum as the specimen is annealed. The same would be true for (200) reflections from planes normal to the rolling or cross-rolling directions. In view of this fact, the amount of material in the copper which has recrystallized can be measured by comparing the intensities of one of these reflections just mentioned with the intensity from a similar specimen after complete annealing. In much the same way the intensity of (111) reflections from planes normal to the cross-rolling direction could be used to measure the amount of unrecrystallized material in the specimen. In the work to be described here the amounts of recrystallized and unrecrystallized material in partly annealed rolled copper specimens were determined in this way. Experimental Procedure Samples of oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) copper, cold-rolled 99.7 pct to 0.002 in. thickness, were subjected to heat treatments for various chosen times at four different temperatures, and high purity copper samples, cold-rolled 98.0 pct to 0.0015 in. thickness, at six different temperatures. In 1947, a Korfmann universal shearing machine was installed in a mine in the Southern field of the Pennsylvania anthracite region. The machine was obtained from Germany by the Bureau of Mines after the close of World War II as a part of a program of experimental work to increase the output and lower the cost of anthracite, which the Bureau of Mines initiated in 1944 when an agreement was made with an anthracite-producing company for use of one of the company's mines as a testing ground for certain mechanical equipment procured or developed by the Bureau. A major objective is to develop a mechanical mining method that will increase the rate of advance and reduce the coat of development of coal gangways in steeply pitching seams. In addition to the time to be saved in driving these openings by machine, it is felt that further economies will be affected by making it possible to concentrate producing sections into smaller compass and that savings will ensue in supervision, maintenance, and time required for mining a section. A higher percentage extraction also is an objective. Test work covered by this report was concentrated on the power characteristics, maneuverability, effectiveness, and general qualities of the Korfmann machine in cutting coal, the cutting tests representing the first use of a machine of this kind in steep-pitch mining in the United States.

This report is a compilation of results of brief preliminary tests on sulfide ores that contained gold and silver and, in some cases base metals. It is a companion paper to a recent similar report on oxide ores. Simple treatment methods employing the least possible equipment sometimes produce satisfactory results on marginal ores and in small-scale operations. Investigations of typical ores from newly discovered or recently explored mining districts have been made in continuation of a long-established part of the hydrometallurgical and ore-dressing program of the Reno station, Bureau of Mines. The purpose of such investigations is to encourage the search for and development of mineral resources and particularly to assist in the economical exploitation of low-grade and marginal ores as well as the conservation and recovery .of values in products that were discarded from former operations because of inability to treat them profitably. Several of these investigations have been limited to preliminary tests of samples from prospecting operations, whereas same involved samples of old dumps or tailings piles. The test work in these cases was not extensive enough to warrant publication as individual reports, but is of considerable interest inasmuch as it indicates the possibilities as well as the limitations of treating the respective materials. The samples were representative of the districts from which they wore obtained, so this information should be helpful in the future development of these districts.

H. H. Kellogg—There is one point that the author has failed to emphasize sufficiently in his paper. What is commonly called the equilibrium contact-angle (the author's "maximum contact-angle") can have only one value on a smooth, flat, homogeneous surface under a given set of conditions. The equilibrium contact-angle is defined, for such a system, as the angle between the solid-liquid and liquid-gas interfaces, measured through the liquid. The value of the equilibrium contact-angle is uniquely determined by the value of the interfacial energies of the three intersecting interfaces and is independent of other forces in the system. When the liquid-gas interface intersects the solid at an edge—as was the case for all the experiments reported in this paper—the orientation of the solid-liquid interface is indeterminate or varies through 90" for a right-angle edge. Mr. Morris has called the angle between the horizontal and the liquid-gas interface for this edge condition a "static contact-angle." I feel that this term is unnecessarily misleading. In the first place, "static contact-angle" sounds too much like "equilibrium contact-angle." In the second place, the magnitude of the "static contact-angle," which I would prefer to call the "supporting angle," is determined by the forces in the system other than those derived from the interfacial energies, hence "contact angle" is misleading. If Mr. Morris had said that the "supporting-angle" is variable and depends on the weight of the particle and size of the bubble and that it has a maximum possible value equal to the equilibrium contact-angle, his discussion would have been more accurate. T. M. Morris (author's reply)—Mr. Kellogg puts forth a reasonable criticism of some of the terminology used in the paper. I agree that the term "static contact angle" may be misleading. Substitution of the term "supporting angle" or "vector angle" may be more suitable. F. X. Tartaron—In this paper the author presents a very interesting mathematical development of the forces present when a mineral particle adheres to an air bubble. Excellent concordance is obtained between mathematical formulation and experimental results. It is the writer's understanding that when the mineral surface presented to an air bubble is greater than the area of contact, the maximum contact angle is obtained. However, this contact angle represents distortion of the bubble, the normal shape of which is spherical or in cross-section, circular. This distortion produces a force that acts in opposition to the force of adhesion between the bubble and particle. Hence, at maximum contact angle, the force of adhesion between bubble and particle is at a minimum for static conditions. However, when the size of bubble is increased, the size of particle remaining the same (and all other conditions remaining the same), the contact angle decreases, the distortion of the bubble decreases and the force in opposition to adherence of bubble and particle also decreases. Thus, there is stronger attachment between bubble and particle. When this situation is applied to actual flotation conditions, it is doubtful that it has any significance. The reason is that the bubbles are normally so much larger than the particles, that in substantially all cases, it is probable that negligible distortion of the bubble takes place. In table IV, the author makes computations for bubbles from 0.50 to 2 mm diam. This is from 0.02 in. to 0.08 in. Certainly the bubbles generated in a flotation machine are far larger than this. The surfaces of the author's bubbles range from 0.79 to 12.6 sq mm. The area of contact of the glass rod (0.15 mm diam) is 0.017 sq mm. Thus, ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact ranges from 47 to 741 in round numbers. If we take a %-in. diam bubble and a 65-mesh (0.208 mm) particle of cubical shape, the ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact is 2931. Mineral particles do not readily become attached to air bubbles. Taggart has shown that in pneumatic flotation machines collector-coated particles are only temporarily attached to bubbles. They keep falling off and down in the froth but at a delayed rate as compared with gangue. Spedden and Hannan's motion pictures confirm the difficulty of attaching particles to air bubbles.
