1. Under the conditions of the tests described herein, the proper use of an incombustible stemming plug of the type discussed prevented ignitions of gas in all tests during the firing of 21 single shots of permissible explosive in cool. In two tests with multiple blasting (four and five shots each) no ignitions resulted. 2. The results of a few tests in this investigation and of numerous tests made previously indicate that fire-clay stemming of the same weight as an incombustible plug provides about the same degree of protection as the plug against gas ignitions during blasting of coal by permissible explosives. 3. The hazard of gas ignition on firing charges of non-permissible 40-percent gelatin dynamite in coal was reduced but not eliminated when the shot holes were stemmed with one or two incombustible plugs or with an equivalent weight of fire clay. 4. On the basis of this investigation, the Bureau of Mines considers the proper use of incombustible stemming plugs of the design tested, under the conditions of the tests described in this paper, to be of equivalent safety as the same weight of fire-clay stemming. This report does not constitute approval or disapproval of the incombustible stemming plugs by the Bureau of Mines. 5. The test data indicate that misfired charges in shot holes stemmed with the incombustible stemming plug cannot be disposed of with certainty by the procedure recommended by the manufacturer. In this investigation the misfired charges failed to detonate in 30 percent of the trials.

J. H. HEARDING, Jr.*—Extremely hard ferruginous chert (taconite) was encountered in driving a drift at the Fraser underground mine near Chisholm, Minn., on the Mesabi Iron Range. In order to get better results in drilling in this ground, it was decided to try tungsten carbide bits. In the beginning, 1½ in. tungsten carbide bits and 1 1/8 in. round-lugged alloy steel drill rods with "jack-stud" inserts were used. Considerable difficulty was encountered because the jack-stud became loose in the drill rods. Because there was not enough alloy steel drill rod on hand, we began to insert jack-studs in the ordinary high carbon drill rods and found, to our surprise, that there was less trouble with jack-studs working loose in these rods than there had been with the alloy steel rods. As a result, use of the alloy steel rods has been discontinued entirely. Under the heading "Drilling Procedures" the statement is made that all holes are started with detachable bits or conventional steel to prevent undue strain on the tungsten carbide bit inserts when collaring a hole on uneven ground. This practice was followed in our work originally for the same reason. It was soon found, however, that the holes could be started with the tungsten carbide without injuring the inserts if the drill operator was careful and did not give the drill too much air until the bit had a chance to seat itself in the rock. J. C. FRANZ*—In a discussion of other technical papers with reference to percussion drills and the use of carbide tungsten bits, it was my impression that the authors reported one of the first difficulties experienced with the use of standard, conventional percussion drills, was insert bit failures due to crushing of the bit inserts when the bits became dull. During the past few years, some of the rock drill manufacturers, I am told, have adopted an air drill for use with the carbide bits that have a lighter blow and faster rotation than the regular machine. This machine has been tested and the carbide bit failures have been considerably reduced. L. W. DUPUY†—The difficulties Mr. Youngberg mentions that were had with rod and coupling breakage call to mind similar troubles experienced at the Picacho mine in California near Yuma.6 The commercial couplings then available were found to be tempered almost to brittleness. Rod breakage was usually in the threads near the end of the rod. The highly-tempered couplings would break as soon as the rod broke. The solution was to thoroughly anneal the couplings and to put in only a very mild temper. Subsequently the alloy used in making the couplings was changed from the original by the manufacturer, but still only a very mild temper was used. The result was that the softer coupling would give but would not snap and release its hold on the broken rod thread. Fishing jobs were reduced to the few where the rods broke at the rod end of the thread. Thread breakage on the rods was further reduced by thorough annealing prior to tempering. The data Mr. Youngberg presents regarding the use of carbide inserts on long blasthole drilling is most interesting and it would appear that the use in this manner of percussion drills and carbide bits will have many applications. W. M. WOODWARD*—How many feet of hole, on the average, do you get from a tungsten carbide bit, and is there much variation from this average? E. A. YOUNGBERG (author's reply) —In recent months the 2 in. tungsten carbide bit footages in long hole drilling hake varied from 115 .to 140 ft monthly. The footages obtained from individual bits vary from several feet to over 300 ft, however the life of a majority of the bits will be within 25 ft of the average.

The importance of dissolved oxygen as a principal reagent in the refining of liquid steel and the necessity for its removal in the finishing of many grades have stimulated numerous studies of its chemical behavior in the steel bath. From the thermodynaniic viewpoint the essential data are those which determine the free energy of oxygen in solution as a function of temperature and composition of the molten metal. A number of experimental studies have been reported in recent years from which the free energy of oxygen in iron-oxygen melts can be obtained with a fair degree of accuracy for temperatures not too far from the melting point. Certain discrepancies remain, however, which imply considerable uncertainty at higher temperatures; also several sources of error were recognized in the earlier studies. It has been the object of the experimental work reported in this paper to reexamine these sources of uncertainty and to redetermine the equilibrium condition in the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen dissolved in liquid iron. The reaction and its equilibrium constant are: H2 (g) + Q = H2O (g); K1 _ PH2O / [1] Ph2 X % O Here the underlined symbol Q designates oxygen dissolved in liquid iron. The activity of this dissolved oxygen is known to be directly proportional to its concentrationl,2 and is taken as equal to its weight percent. The closely related reaction of dissolved oxygen with carbon monoxide has also been investigated:3,4,5 co (g) +O = CO?(g); K _ Pco2___ [2] K2= pco X % O [2] The two reactions are related through the wat,er-gas equilibriuni: H2 (g) + CO2 (g) = CO (g) + H2O (g); K2 = PCO X PH2O [3] PH2 X PCO2 and with the aid of the accurately known equilibrium constant of this reaction, it has been shown5 that the experimental data on reactions [1] and 121 are in fairly good, though not exact, agreement. Experimental Method Great care was taken to avoid the principal sources of error of previous studies, namely, gaseous thermal diffusion and temperature measurement. The apparatus was designed to provide controlled preheating of the inlet gases and to permit the addition of an inert gas (argon) in controlled amounts, two measures found to be essential for elimination of thermal diffusion. A known mixture of water vapor and hydrogen was obtained by saturating purified hydrogen with water vapor at controlled temperature. This mixture, with the addition of purified argon, was passed over the surface of a small melt (approximately 70 g) of electrolytic iron in a closed induction furnace. After sufficient time at constant temperature for attainment of equilibrium the melt was cooled and analyzed for oxygen. GAS SYSTEM A schematic diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig 1. Commercial hydrogen is led through the safety trap T and the flowmeter F. The catalytic chamber C, held at 450°C, was used to convert any oxygen into water-vapor. A by-pass B with stopcocks was provided so that the hydrogen could be introduced directly from the tank to the furnace when desired. From the catalytic chamber the gas passed through a water bath W, kept at the desired temperature by an auxiliary heating unit, so that the gas was burdened with approximately the proper amount of water vapor before it was introdvced into the saturator S. All connections beyond the catalytic chamber were of all-glass construction. Those connections beyond the water bath were heated to above 80°C to prevent the condensation of water vapor. After the saturator, purified argon was led into the steam-hydrogen line at J, and finally the ternary mixture was introduced into the furnace. THE SATURATOR The saturator unit comprised three glass chambers, as shown in Fig 1, the first two chambers packed with glass beads and partially filed with water and the third empty. Each tower had a glass tube with a stopper attached for the purpose of adjusting the amount of water in it. The unit was immersed in a large oil bath, which was automatically controlled with the help of a thermostat relay to constant temperature, ± 0.05ºC, using thermometers which had been calibrated against a standard platinum resistance thermometer. The performance of the saturator over the range of experimental conditions was checked by weighing the water absorbed from a measured volume of hydrogen; the observed ratio was always within 0.5 pct of theoretical.

Abstract Canada has opened up a geological province in ?Western Canada which offers a new .stimulus to oil exploration geophysics. The problems of instrumental technique, interpretation, and logistics involved in the exploration of this new territory are presented in this paper and some of the efforts being undertaken to overcome them are discussed. The scope of this programme, its possible trend and extent, especially when viewed .against the background of the exploration effort in the United States, is touched upon. Introduction The science of earth physics was first applied to the search for oil on this continent some twenty-five years ago when torsion balance and refraction seismic methods were initiated in the Gulf Coast area of the United States. Since that time advances in the various branches of the science have been sporadic as new fields for their use opened up in the search for deep salt domes as well as less well-defined geological structures; in the application to well logging as part of the exploitation of petroleum; and in underwater surveys, aerial surveys, etc. In the present paper, attention has been concentrated only on the Western Canada plains area because of the recent remarkable growth of geophysics as an oil finding technique in this region. The other prospective oil areas of the West Coast and the Eastern Provinces of Canada are at present of minor importance, although they will undoubtedly receive increasing consideration in the future as accessibility to markets becomes a major factor and more improved geophysical and geological techniques are developed. A vast province in Canada, covering some 655,000 square miles of prospective oil territory (approximately one-half of the prospective oil area in the United States), has provided the new sphere of activity for geophysics (see Figures 1 and 2). Included in this area are immense inaccessible, uninhabited frozen regions which pose a new problem in logistics and operational techniques.

Pilot plant test work in 1942 and 1943 showed that by a combination of desliming, fine-size classification, and Sullivan deck concentration it is possible to recover heavy minerals such as cassiterite at least as fine as 10 microns in size. This appreciable improvement in gravity concentration practice has been substantiated by several full-sized plants.

In order to appreciate fully the place of palaeontology within the general framework of the geological sciences, consideration must be given to the time, about 150 years ago, just before the study of fossils was beginning to be applied to geological problems. At theend of the eighteenth century, almost all geologists recognised that fossils were the remains of animals and plants that had lived at the time when the rocks in which they occur were formed. It was also realized that many-some geologists thought all-rocks hadbeen formed under water, but as regards the order of succession in which these rocks had originated, and the relative ages of rocks found in different parts of the world or even of one country, only the haziest and most contradictory ideas existed.Around the turn from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, a widely taught system of theories was that of the German professor, Abraham Gottlob Werner, who believed that the surface of the earth had once been covered by a universal ocean at whose bottom all rocks had been deposited. As the level of this ocean gradually subsided, older rocks-so Werner taught-are now generally found in the mountains or at great depth below the younger rocks; this was his "Primitive Division" which included granite, gneiss, schists, slates, basalt, porphyry and other igneous and metamorphic rocks, all of which he believed to be of sedimentary origin. Younger rocks, according to Werner, were formed at successively lower levels as the water receded. Next in age he placed a "Transition System" of limestones and greywackes; still younger the so-called "Floetz Division," which included sandstone, limestone, gypsum, salt, coal, but also some basalt, porphyry and other rocks; youngest were the alluvial deposits of recent clays, loams, sands and gravel. Thus, in the Wernerian system the age of a rock was determined on the basis of its petrographic properties and the height of its occurrence relative to sea-level.Here and there these ideas survived well into the nineteenth century. As late as 1825, Charles Darwin listened to lectures by Professor Jamieson, one of the last proponents of Wernerian theories in England. The fact that entirely different kinds of fossils occurredin rocks which were regarded as contemporaneous did not worry the theoreticians.It is, therefore, noteworthy and significant that the value of fossils for the interpretation of geological events was demonstrated to the geologists by an engineer and surveyor, WiIIiam Smith, who, although no professional geologist, has often been called the "Father of English Geology." His professional work, which was mainly concerned with drainage and irrigation projects, took Smith to all parts of England, where he sometimes journeyed as much as 10,000 miles in 11 year. Smith was a keen observer and, unhampered by theoretical speculations, he noted the occurrence of fossils and collected specimens wherever he went. Before long he realized that the same kind of fossils followed each other in successive layers of rocks in much the same way in different parts of England, and soon he was able, by looking at fossils collected by other people, to tell from what...

Inhomogeneous yielding during the early stages of plastic flow has been observed in many metals and has long been a subject of controversy. Low carbon steel, when strained at room temperature, exhibits a distinct yield point at which the metal ceases to behave elastically and begins to flow plastically without further increase in stress,† often with an actual decrease in stress from that existing at the yield point. One manifestation of this behavior is the familiar Lüders lines. The extent of the yield point elongation (the plastic strain which results without raising the stress above that at the initial yield point) may be several percent. Several explanations of this type of yielding in steels have appeared in the literature:1-3}; 1. The segregation of carbides or other constituents at the grain boundaries of ferrite forms cell-like blocks which break down at a higher stress than that at which the ferrite alone will flow. 2. The precipitation of various constituents within the ferrite itself in some way blocks initial flow until a higher stress is reached, after which a great deal of flow occurs without further increase in stress. 3. The restraining influence of neighboring, less favorably oriented grains in a polycrystal results in a storing up of energy, which on yielding is sufficient to cause the continued propagation of slip bands on the multiplicity of slip systems available in adjacent iron crystals without increase in stress. 4. Local segregation of carbon atoms increases the stress required for the initial propagation of dislocations. The stress required for further deformation is lower.3 Such an explanation would require the presence of upper and lower yield points in single crystals. Low and Gensamer2 have shown that heterogeneous yielding can be eliminated by removal of carbon and nitrogen from polycrystalline steels by wet-hydrogen treatment. They also demonstrated that the re-introduction of minute amounts of carbon or nitrogen caused a return of the yield point. Observations of the initial flow of single crystals containing small amounts of carbon and nitrogen- should provide a clue to the explanation of inhomogeneous yielding. Previous tests of iron crystals4-6 can not be considered conclusive because it is uncertain whether the carbon and nitrogen were satisfactorily removed by the decarburization technique employed. The purpose of the experiments described herein was to determine whether single iron crystals containing either carbon or nitrogen would exhibit in-homogeneous yielding. Experimental Procedures THE PREPARATION OF SINGLE CRYSTALS All crvstals were formed in the following way. Aluminum killed sheet material 80 mils thick was machined into specimens of the outer contour shown in Fig 1. These mildly tapered specimens were decarburized at 730°C for 16 hr in hydrogen that had been bubbled rapidly through water maintained at 70°. This paper deals chiefly with the preliminary examination, when a decision has to be made as to whether a prospect has a chance of developing into a mine or not. At this stage it is important to have a fairly clear conception of what is expected of the prospect, andjust what type of mine is sought. Much money can be wasted testing a prospect suitable for a prospector or small syndicate, but which never looked like becoming a mine of sufficient size to interest a company. When undertaking an inspection, therefore, it is necessary to have a broad outline, at least, of the policy of the principals for whom the report is intended.At this early stage it is frequently necessary to form an opinion of the prospects of a property on very meagre data. When new to this type of work one's first reaction is often th~t it is impossible to pass an opinion on the data available. It. is absolutely necessary,however, that an opinion of the possibilities and chances of favourable development be given; The report should strive to convey this information, making quite ::lear the risk involved, how complete are the data on which this opinion is based, and the possible magnitude of the prize. A Preliminary report has to state whether a property has sufficient prospects to warrant testing.The following procedure is suggested in order to make best use of the data and minimise hasty conclusions influenced by preconceived ideas-an ever-present danger.Examination.The first stage is the examination. This should aim at collecting all available significant data, but avoid clouding the issue with detail which, at this stage, will not affect the decision. The following points are considered to be the main ones for which to look:-Geological Environment.As good a working knowledge as possible'of the geology of the area should be obtained. Government Geological Survey reports and maps, if available, will be a big help. A detailed knowledge of the regional geology is not necessary a,t this stage, but a broad outline of the geological setting of the prospect under review, and also of any other important mines in the district, is often helpful in the final decision.The Nature of the Ore-Body.Any facts concerning the nature or occurrence of the lode should be noted as, coupled with experience of similar bodies, they affect the ultimate decision.Structural Control.This is probably the most important factor, in the light of present geological knowledge. Its chief importance is due to two facts:-(a) Structure plays one of the prime parts in ore deposition.(b) Geological knowledge, of structure is somewhat in advance of knowledge of other factors influencing ore deposition.

Improvements in the X-ray method of measuring liquid saturation and saturation distribution are presented. Two identical direct current amplifiers have been added to measure continuously the intensities of the X-ray tube output and the beam which has passed through the core under test. The ratio of these intensities is automatically recorded on a modified Brown Electronik Recorder. Arrangements have been made to drive the core automatically and in synchronism with the recorder chart so as to give a continuous curve showing the variation of liquid saturation along the length of the core. By determining the ratio of the two X-ray beam intensities simultaneously the measurements are made essentially independent of small fluctuation in voltage and current supplied to the tube. This improved technique has been used for investigating the fluid distribution along the length of cores and core assemblies when one fluid is displaced by another. Typical results of these studies are shown. INTRODUCTION In a previous publication' a method was described for measuring the oil saturation in cores which was based on the absorption of X-rays by the fluid content of the core. While that technique is capable of yielding accurate results, the original apparatus was not especially convenient for determining the fluid distribution along the length of a core. This was primarily due to the slow response of the amplifier and galvanometer and the necessity of making a point by point survey of the material under investigation. It was, therefore, not only possible for sections of the core having a variable or unusual saturation distribution to escape observation entirely, but changes in output of the X-ray generator between readings on the unknown and the monitor introduced errors in the measurements that could be avoided only by further stabilization of the source or by taking a large number of readings. This paper describes a method and apparatus for recording continuously and automatically the intensity of the X-ray beam that is transmitted by a core. The variation of saturation with time at a given section of the core may thus be found, or by scanning the core by driving it in synchronism with the recorder the saturation distribution may readily be determined. As indicated in the previous paper, the X-ray method possesses an advantage over the weighing technique in relative permeability experimentation in that the core need not be removed from the holder for the purpose of making a saturation measurement. Furthermore, the actual distribution of fluid and the effects upon that distribution of inflow and outflow heads may be investigated. And errors due to gas bubbles or loss of liquid that are frequently sources of error in volumetric methods of saturation determination are avoided. PRINCIPLE OF THE METHOD The energy in an X-ray beam that has passed through an absorbing material is expressed by the well known formula: E = E0, e-cd (1) where E, is the energy in the incident beam, µ the mass absorption coefficient, c the density or concentration of absorbing material, and d is the length of path of the beam in the absorber. The coefficient µ varies with the wavelength of the radiation as well as with the absorbing material. The output of an X-ray tube varies in an approximately linear manner with the tube current, but to the second or higher power of the anode voltage. Moreover, the quality or wavelength distribution of the radiation varies with the voltage.

The results of two sets of displacement experiments are reported. In the first set of experiments various solutions of sugar in water were displaced by other solutions of sugar in water. In the second set oils were displaced by water. Each set of experiments was performed on a linear system made of cemented silica sand grains. These displacement tests were made to evaluate the behavior when the ratio of fluid viscosities between the displacing and displaced phases was varied. A further consequence of the test results is a comparison between displacement behavior when the displaced and displacing phases are miscible as with sugar solutions and when they are immiscible as with oil and water. INTRODUCTION Buckley and Leverett1 have presented a theory for the displacement of oil by gas or water based upon the relative permeability concept. This theory presents the displacement of oil as occurring in two phases, an initial or primary phase preceding the breakthrough of the displacing phase and a subordinate or secondary phase during which both oil and the displacing phase flow simultaneously through the same porous section. These authors gave the results of calculations to show that the percentage of oil displaced during the primary phase by water drive would be dependent upon the ratio of the viscosity of the oil to that of the water. No experimental evidence was reported by these authors to substantiate their theory. Qualitatively, however, it has been found to be in agreement with many observed field results. Laboratory investigators have been in general agreement in reporting for air or gas drive2,3 a small primary phase of production and a large secondary phase. "INTRODUCTION Experience and research have shown that an effective way to reduce structural damage from explosions is to provide adequate pressure-relief vents in the walls of equipment and buildings within which explosions might occur. In general, free or unrestricted openings represent the most efficient type of vent. However, in many manufacturing operations it is impractical to use free vents, and it becomes necessary to cover the openings with diaphragms or blow-out disks, hinged panels, or other devices, in order to give protection against weather changes, to prevent the efflux of dusts or vapors from equipment during normal operations, or for other reasons.A few data on the pressure-relieving capacities of hinged panels and a paper diaphragm were published in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3924,4/ which covered the first phase of the dust-explosion venting study made by the Bureau. The present report describes recent experiments that were made to determine the relative effectiveness of an unrestricted vent and 22 types of closures, including various paper, cloth, and metal-foil diaphragms, hinged doors or panels, and several kinds of scored and unscored glass panes.The tests showed that many of the vent closures were effective in releasing the explosions rapidly during their incipient stage, so that the development of destructive pressures was prevented. Vents of this type should prove useful in safeguarding industrial equipment from severe explosion damage. The experiments disclosed that the venting capacities of the diaphragms are approximately inversely proportional to their static bursting strengths."

"Part I. - PrinciplesIntroductionIf the oxides of the metals are listed in decreasing order of the magnitude of their heats of formation, the list appearing in Table 1 will be formed. It will be apparent at once that this is essentially the well-known electrochemical series (Table li). The metals at the bottom of the list exhibit great stability and are attacked only by the most violent of chemical reagents. Higher on the list, the metals become more reactive until, at the head of the list, the metals lithium and calcium are unstable in moist air.The reactive metals to be considered lie above manganese. In this group will be found familiar and abundant metals such as aluminium and magnesium, the unfamiliar yet abundant metal titanium, the rare and mysterious metal beryllium, and others of greater or less interest.While these metals exhibit properties as unlike as those of uranium and magnesium, they have in common a specialized and difficult extractive metallurgy. They form compounds of great stability, and their reduction is to varying degrees difficult. The position of a metal in Table 1 (and more particu1arly its position in the free energy column) gives a numerical value to this property.Oxides with low free energies of formation may be reduced with great ease; thus silver and mercury may be produced from their oxides by simple heating in air.Lead, iron, and zinc may be separated from their oxides by heating with carbon to moderate temperatures. Magnesium oxide, on the other hand, .requires a high temperature and very special conditions before it will yield magnesium metal."

"IntroductionThe difficulties to be overcome in shaft sinking and development at depth are centred at McIntyre in and around No. 12 shaft. Generally they have been due to increasing pressures and temperatures and to changes in geological structure. This paper describes the difficulties and the measures taken to meet them.No. 12 ShaftEarly in 1932 McIntyre decided to sink an internal shaft from the deepest level, the 3875, to explore and develop known veins extending below that horizon. The location selected was a point 1,500 feet south and 1,000 feet east of No. 11 shaft, the main operating shaft through which the men, ore, and most of the materials are handled Shaft and auxiliary equipment we1e laid out for 3,000 feet, that is to 7,000 feet below the surface. The shaft was to be capable of handling 1,500 tons of ore daily from the lowest level, and was to provide ventilation, compressed air, water, and electric power to service all levels.No. 12 is an internal, vertical shaft extending from the 3875 to the 6825 level and bottoming at 7,007 feet. It is a rectangular, four-compartment shaft, 21 ft. 9¾, in. by 6 ft. 3¾ in. outside the timber (Figure 1).There are two hoisting compartments and one airway compartment, each 4 ft. 10¾ in. by 5 ft. ¾ in. inside dimensions, and a combined manway, pipe, and cable compartment 4 ft. ¼ in. by 5 ft. ¾ in. Levels have been established at 150-foot intervals, pump stations and sumps at 1,000-foot intervals, and. there are two loading pockets, one at the 5525 and the other at the 6900 level.The shaft was sunk in two stages. The first stage, consisting of preparation above the 3875 level and sinking to 5585 feet, was completed by March 31st, 1935. The second stage of deepening the shaft from 5,585 to 7,007 feet was started August lst, 1946, and completed three years later."

In May l942, the Bureau of Mines started exploring for manganese on the Black Poch manganese property, Esmeralda County, Nev., to determine possible reserves of manganese in the deposits. The work was done by the Bureau in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey and comprised a study of the geology, mapping the area, and exploring by trenching, test pitting, and sampling. All ore bodies were examined and sampled, and the three most important areas were explored by trenching and test pitting. This report notes the location, ownership, and history of the deposits; explains the physical features of the district; mentions briefly mine workings and metallurgy; and describes the geology and ore bodies. The Bureau erected a temporary camp, repaired 5 miles of temporary road, constructed 1,000 feet of new road, dug 3,173 foot of trenches with a vertical crone section of 4 x 10 feet and 91 test pits with a cross section 3 x 6 feet, averaging about 6 feet deep, and cut 134 samples.

There is need for an adequate working hypothesis that would describe at least qualitatively the crystallographic mechanism for the transformation from austenite to martensite in steel. A general theory would not only be of great assistance in the correlation of existing data and in planning future experimentation, but would also form the basis for an eventual explanation of the property changes that accompany lattice transformations. The mechanism of martensite formation described in the following pages is the outcome of two new experimental determinations: (1) the accurate evaluation of the lattice relationship between austenite and individual crystals of martensite, and (2) the measurement and analysis of the change in position that a volume of austenite undergoes when it transforms into a crystal of martensite. For this latter study, the stereographic analysis of shear was employed; this method greatly simplifies the solution of lattice-shear problems, and some space is devoted to its description. Lattiice Relationships and Habits PREVIOUS WORK The lattice relationships between austenite and martensite in carbon steels have been studied by Kurdjurnow-and Sachs,' and by Wassermann;2 and in iron-nickel alloys by Nishiyama.3 Wassermann,2 and Mehl and Derge.4 The studies by Kurdjumow and Sachs and by Wassermann were made on single (austenite) crystals of quenched 1.4 pct carbon steel, and the results of these two independent studies agree closely with the postulated lattice relationships: (III)r||(0ll)a [101]r [111]a [1] Both Nishiyama and Wassermann worked with an alloy of iron plus 30 pct nickel (all austenite at room temperature), and "martensitic alpha" was formed by cooling in liquid air. They agree that the lattice relationships for these conditions are: (lll)r||(011)a [112]r[011]a [2] Mehl and Derge worked with a range of iron-nickel alloy compositions centered about 30 pct nickel. They concluded that when the transformation takes place near room temperature or above, relationship [l] holds, but if the same specimen is made to transform at -195°C, relationship [2] obtains;intermediate temperatures evidently produced a combination of these two relationships. Sachs and co-worker~,1,7 as well as Nishiyama,3 have proposed transformation mechanisms for martensite formation.* Both of the mechanisms picture the transformation as initiated by shearing movements along the octahedral [Ill] plane of austenite, followed by suitable expansion and contraction to complete the transformation. These mechanisms have been described and commented upon by Mehl, Barrett, and Smith,8 Mehl and Derge,4 Wassermann,2 and others, and generally accepted by investigators in this field. Greninger and Troiano9 have recently published the results of a detailed study of the shapes and orientation habits of martensite crystals in plain-carbon and nickel steels. They found that, contrary to previous assumptions, martensite plates form not along the octahedral planes but along austenite planes of very high indices; these results were in line with those of previous studies of martensite reactions in nonferrous alloy systems by Greninger and coworkers.6,10 Greninger and Troiano concluded that the transformation theories of Kurdjumow and Sachsl and of Nishiyama3 are untenable. Phragmén11 reached a similar conclusion. EXPERlMENTAL METHODS The object of this particular study was the evaluation of (1) lattice relationship between austenite and martensite, and (2) relationship between the martensite lattice and the martensite plate. The technique used for solving these problems was similar to that used by Greninger6 on martensitic structures in 8 copper-aluminum alloys. Briefly, the method consists of grinding and polishing a specimen on a surface parallel to an individual martensite plate and thus exposing a single martensite crystal for an area of l to 3 mm. The orientation of this exposed martensite crystal is then determined by means of a back-reflection Laue X ray pattern.12 Another pattern is obtained from the matrix crystal, and a stereo-graphic plot of data from these two patterns then provides the solution to the problem. It is necessary to repeat this process on several crystals in order to determine whether or not the solution is unique.

Much attention and publicity has been given, during recent years, to grinding, classification, flotation, and thickening. The various technical papers, and symposiums held to discuss these important phases of milling, have contributed to a better understanding of the fundamental principles and operating variables involved. Another important part of milling— to the flotation operator—is a treatment step to which frequently too little attention is given—"conditioning," or the treatment the ground mineral pulp receives before it enters the flotation machines. "Conditioning" is a hackneyed and frequently misused term, commonly employed to describe the pretreatment of surfaces of minerals in ore pulps or mill products prior to froth flotation. In general, such pretreatment is for the purpose of changing the flotation characteristics of these mineral sur- faces to enable them to respond in some desired predetermined manner when subjected to flotation. Taggartl states that the function of conditioning is "either to insure selective collector coating of one mineral species while another species is not; or to take such steps as will compensate for departure therefrom." As 0. C. Ralston has stated? ... we are still faced with the fact that some mineral particles are water-avid, others air-avid, and that by properly modifying them they may be enhanced or diminished in desirable or undesirable avidity. Coatings on minerals must still be assumed to fall into three classes: (1) a coating of immiscible oil, (2) a layer of adsorbed substance, (3) a chemically produced coating. It is submitted that the process of preparing mineral surfaces for subsequent flotation treatment should take into consideration physical as well as chemical means for altering the normal flotation response of the mineral surfaces. A more descriptive word than "conditioning" is needed to designate broadly these procedures. The minerals in many ores cannot be made to respond in a normal manner to usual methods of "conditioning" with selectivity modifying reagents, until they have been cleansed, or interfering slimes and soluble salts have been removed from the ore. Therefore, it appears important to include under the general subject of "conditioning" a discussion of the purposes, methods used, and some of the advantages of these pretreatment steps. This is dealt with under the subject heading " Initial Treatment of Mineral Surfaces and Ore Pulps." Under this broader interpretation, the methods employed for treating mineral surfaces to alter their flotation characteristics may be divided into three general classes: 1. Physical methods.

It has been proposed1 on the basis of slip and flow that the ideal deformation texture of drawn wire for face-centered cubic metals is a (111) direction parallel to the wire axis. Under these considerations, an intermediate [loo] texture is permissible but should eventually change to the stable [Ill] orientation. This theory does not explain why copper and its alloys containing up to about 30 pct nickel, 5 pct zinc and 1 pct aluminum were found to have a double [Ill], [100] texture, while alloys with at least 8 pct zinc and 2 pct aluminum developed essentially a single [Ill] texture.1,2 It does suggest, however, that the [loo] component of the former alloys should disappear with additional deformation.3 Some evidence exists to support this suggestion. Howald4 reported that annealed copper wire previously drawn 93.8 pct and 98.5 pct developed a single [Ill] texture. Since, in wire, the drawn and annealed textures are similar, these wires probably had a single [Ill] deformation texture before annealing. In addition, although cold rolled polycrystalline copper and 80-20 brass were found to form different types of pole figures,5,6 single crystals of these metals when rolled from the stable (110) [112] orientation were found to produce essentially the same polo figure.7.8 It may be, therefore, that while the addition of solute elements changes the path by which the final texture is obtained, the final texture is not changed. Experimental Results The wires remaining from the previous investigation1 already drawn about 50 pct reduction in diameter were further drawn to 86 pct and then to 96.4 pct total reduction in diameter. The textures were determined after these stages by transmission X ray photograms taken with a copper K-alpha beam rotated 0 degrees toward the wire axis. It was found that the ratio of the [111].] and [100] intensities of the double texture in copper and its alloys containing 0.94 pct aluminum, 30.70 pct nickel, 2.61 pct zinc and 4.99 pct zinc increased from about 3:l for the 50 pct reduction to about 9:l for the 86 pct reduction. After 96.4 pct reduction, these wires exhibited essentially a single [lll] texture. Summary Thus, the drawn wire deformation texture of copper and its alpha solid solution alloys containing aluminum, nickel or zinc is essentially a single [Ill] texture as predicted by theoretical considerations of slip and flow.' For copper and its alloys containing up to about 1 pct aluminum, 5 pct zinc and at least 30 pct nickel, an intermediate [loo] component is found after about 50 pct reduction in diameter, but disappears after about 95 pct reduction in diameter. For alpha solid solution alloys containing at least about 2 pct aluminum and 8 pct zinc the single [Ill] texture is developed considerably more easily and is found after about 50 pct reduction in diameter. One phase of the research and development work on synthetic liquid fuels conducted by the Bureau of Mines at Morgantown, W. Va. in cooperation with West Virginia University deals with the purification of synthesis gas.2/ Most of the experimental studies on gas purification have been directed toward the removal of organic sulfur from gas, either catalytically or by adsorption with activated carbon. An important part of the purification program has been the development of suitable analytical methods for determining organic sulfur compounds. As the total sulfur content, organic and inorganic, of purified synthesis gas should not exceed 0.1 grain per 100 cubic feet, the need for accurate analytical methods is apparent. It is also apparent that such methods must be rapid if one wishes to evaluate various processes for removing sulfur from gas. The organic sulfur found in most gas produced from coal is usually present as carbon disulfide, carbon oxysulfide, methyl and ethyl mercaptans, and thiophene, with the exception of thiophene, the remaining organic sulfur compounds respond similarly to catalytic treatment and can be removed effectively. Not only does thiophene resist most catalytic treatment, but it poisons some catalysts, rendering them ineffective in removing the other forms of organic sulfur.

A. E. LEE, JR. (author)—In addition to the paper we should like to make a few remarks. First, the seriousness of bending of the clay retort cannot be overemphasized. Not only did bending limit the length of the vessel, but it permitted corrosive fluid slags to concentrate in the belly of the retort and thus increased the possibility of boring. Bending also practically prohibited the use of cleanout machines and increased the danger of excessive fume losses by allowing furnace gases to escape around the top of the retort mouth. It will be noted that the Blackwell pottery practice places considerable emphasis on careful drying of retorts. Perhaps it is another smelter superstition, but traditionally the aging of retorts beyond a reasonable drying period has been considered important to long life. We are unable to give a good explanation of why aging should improve retorts. During the past fall in an attempt to prove a theory that the combined water in the clay decreased during aging, about 50 samples of wet retort collars were placed in a dry room when it was closed. Loss of weight, combined water and free moisture were measured each week over the 100 day drying period. The affinity of the dried retort for moisture makes difficult the accurate measurement of free water; however, there was a clearly defined free moisture change from about 12.5 pct when freshly made to about 2 pet at the end of 18 days, then a gradual loss to about 0.25 pet at 70 days and an apparent equilibrium near this figure through the 100th day. There was no appreciable change in the combined water. The change in weight of the average sample was, however, rather unusual, there being consistently a loss of weight throughout the entire 100 days. From the 63rd day on this leveled off to about 0.03 pet per week. These were small samples and certainly should have dried

Capital, as represented by mineral resources, is being exhausted rapidly without possibility of identical replacement. The public must be discouraged from thinking-why worry about the bank balance so long as there are plenty of blank checks? Instead of each man, woman, and child being owners of a mineral capital of $89,000 as former Secretary Ickes once stated, they are really the guardians of a mineral reserve which, when harvested, cannot be reproduced. The proper use of this material is the basis of modern civilization and military power. The best American institutions cannot be maintained or transmitted to our children unless this trust is guarded. It is unfortunate that more attention has not been focused on the fact that this country is headed for a have-not status in the family of great nations if some- thing is not done to preserve its mineral heritage. It is the privilege of the United States now to champion and implement democracy because it is industrialized and can get at its raw materials. A high price is being paid every day in mineral depletion for the privilege. No one can eat his cake and have it too. The United States still must face world-wide economic competition and, perhaps, World War III. In the final analysis all wealth comes from the ground, whether plant, animal, or mineral. Value is in-
