IN a brief summary of the many occurrences of fluorspar in our western states, it is not possible to go into detail in regard to the geology, mining and milling methods, and reserves about individual deposits. Rather a broad review is made of the occurrences and an analysis of how the western deposits may fit into our future domestic economy is presented. GENERAL STATEMENT ON FLUORSPAR SITUATION Fluorspar has been used for years as a flux in the manufacture of basic open-hearth steel, in foundry cupolas for melting pig iron, in the manufacture of opalescent glass and in the preparation of hydrofluoric acid. In 1880 the annual production of fluorspar in the United States was around 4000 tons per year. By 1900 it was up to 21,656 tons and between 1902 and 1908 it averaged about 40,000 tons annually. Prices were then so low, by present standards, that it seems impossible to believe now that mining could have been performed profitably at the price levels then prevailing. In 1890 fluorspar sold at the mines for $6.70 per ton, in I901 for $5.81, in 1916 for $5.92. When the United States entered World War I, fluorspar production and price skyrocketed; the production reached 263,817 tons in 1918, with prices above $20.00 per ton, and prices were even higher in 1919 and 1920. After 1920, the domestic production fell from the 1918 level to about 125,000 tons annually and the average price dropped back to about $I8.00 per ton. By 1935 the average price had fallen to $15.00, but in 194o with a rising demand the average price of all grades had gone back up to $20.31. Today it is 75 per cent higher than in 1940 and presumably the price of acid grade at least would be even higher if it were not for price ceilings. The first subsequent year that the domestic production exceeded that of 1918 was 1941, and the 1944 production is expected to exceed 400,000 tons, 'or over one and a half times that of 1918. In five-year periods, average production and imports were as are shown in Table I. [ ] Many people concerned with the consumption of fluorspar believe that the postwar period ahead will show a repetition of price trends of the last such period. They believe that imports will be- again an important factor in the available supply and the price will fall back gradually toward the prewar level. The following basic factors are pertinent in analyzing this conclusion:

THE development of the modern high-speed vibrating screen, together with the increasing availability of long-lasting stainless-steel screen cloth for relatively fine-mesh separations, means that more screen circuits will be used in the future. It seems pertinent therefore to examine a few characteristics of screen-circuit products, and especially the points of difference as compared with products of classifier circuits. The most noticeable change that takes place when substituting screening for classification in a grinding circuit is a substantial drop in the circulating load, owing to the greater ease with which the "fines" leave the circuit. Where circulating loads of 500 to 600 per cent are considered fairly normal in classifier grinding circuits, the grinding circuit equipped with screens for equivalent work will have a circulating load of only 20 to 75 per cent. As a result, the products of screen circuits will show a minimum of overgrinding or sliming as compared with a classifier circuit. The desirability of this characteristic will naturally vary according to the metallurgical requirement in each case. Because screen separations make a sharper division according to particle size, the products of screen circuits can be expected to show greater crowding of particles near the point of separation. These changes in product characteristics are so important that other factors, both in the grinding and concentration processes must be adjusted if the operator is to take full advantage of the increased tonnages and higher efficiencies available to him through the use of the screen circuit. One factor that too often is overlooked when changing to screen circuits is the importance of adjusting the ball-mill or rod-mill charge, to compensate for: (I) increased tonnage of new feed, (2) decreased circulating load, or (3) more granular character of feed. These same factors should also be taken into consideration for their effect on the various types of concentration or flotation equipment that may follow the screen circuit. Over a period of years, this equipment has generally been designed and adjusted to the product of the classifier, therefore it seems obvious that some research on the adjustment and adaptation of concentrating and flotation equipment to screen-circuit products will be most profitable to the operators. To illustrate the points mentioned above, the results from three recent installations follow, with data on the comparative characteristics of screen and classifier circuits. A range of separation from 10 to 48 mesh has been chosen, using two general types of screening equipment and two types of classifiers. The first of the installations of which the results are to be examined is that of an iron-ore installation where eastern magnetite was being concentrated prior to sintering. Although the explosion-fatality record for the fiscal year 1944 showed considerable improvement over those of the preceding 4 years, it is still fur from creditable, and the coal-mining industry and agencies interested in the prevention of coal-mine accidents should not be satisfied until accidents from explosions and fires are eliminated. In view of present knowledge of the methods of preventing explosions and fires, such disasters are inexcusable and discredit the mining industry. Despite this knowledge, far too many coal¬mine operators and employees continue to follow procedures that have resulted in disasters in the past. Included in the appendix to this circular are a number of safety measures designed to prevent coal-mine explosions and fires and metal-mine fires. Their adoption is essential if explosions and fires are to be prevented, as certainly they should be. An epidemic of disastrous mine fires of electrical origin during the past 2 years emphasizes the need for better methods of protection of underground electrical circuits. At present, committees of mining-electrical engineers, electrical-equipment manufacturers' representatives, and others are cooperating with the Bureau of Mines seeking means to solve this problem.

It has been suggested by a number of people that it would be worth while for some one to attempt to summarize or condense the proceedings of this symposium. This task has fallen to me as organizer and co-chairman. Its difficulty will be appreciated by anyone who attempts to read the whole proceedings. It is therefore with trepidation that I offer the following digest. In recent years there has been a renewal of interest in America on this subject of the cohesive strength of materials, and a growing appreciation of the need for a better theory of cohesion failure. The theories of elastic action and plastic action are well developed, particularly the former. The theory of plastic action is still in the course of development, but it is well along. Plastic action is terminated by cohesion failure and what is needed is a theory that will tell us when to expect the cohesion failure. In the past it has generally been assumed that cohesion failure will occur when a critical value of the maximum tensile stress has been reached. Many experiments have shown that this is not strictly true, and this symposium concerns itself with the failures of this simple hypothesis, and with the efforts that have been made to devise a more satisfactory theory. The most active contributor in recent years to knowledge in this field is Dr. McAdam, and he was asked to open the symposium with a summary or condensation of his papers and views. Undoubtedly it is presumptuous to attempt a still greater condensation, but perhaps it will be useful, because even his contribution to this symposium contains no summary, no concise statement of just what his contribution has been. Dr. McAdam makes two main points The first is that the cohesive strength is not a single valued quantity, but that it is a function of all three principal stresses and hence must be represented diagrammati-cally by a surface in a three-dimensional figure, Dr. McAdam has attempted so to delineate the cohesion limit, basing his

CHAIRMAN M. A. HUNTER. UP to this time our stress-corrosion sessions have been concerned with stress-corrosion cracking in brass. In the succeeding sessions a variety of other products which are susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking are to be considered and this afternoon's session is to be devoted to stress-corrosion cracking in light metals. The problems you have had to deal with up to now in brass have been very simple ones. From this time on the complexities become greater. You have already learned in the preceding sessions, that copper is not susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking and when you begin to alloy it with 3 per cent or larger proportions of zinc, then stress- corrosion cracking ensues. You apparently have few complications in the copper alloys you make. There is apparently no precipitation on the grain boundaries in the brass, and no precipitation within the metal itself. So, on the whole, the problem is a simple one. Yet it has been with the brass people for a very long time and it is apparently not yet settled from the fact

Austenitic stainless alloys are susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking which may occur under certain corrosion environments irrespective of their susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. Test samples are described for investigating stress-corrosion susceptibility of alloys for industrial equipment. A laboratory test using a solution of magnesium chloride boiling at 309 F. was found to produce transgranular cracks in several alloys investigated and in types 347 and 316 stainless steel tubing a residual stress of the order of 10,000 psi. was observed to initiate cracking. The susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking as judged by the boiling magnesium chloride test indicates that alloys may be selected which will withstand a high stress in service Stressed specimens of stainless alloys included in a corrosion testing program will aid in determining the acceptibility of these fabricated alloys, when stressed, to the service conditions.

A. I. Blank.*-—Mr. Kanter has spoken of failures from causes other than creep itself in metals that are subjected to creep stresses. Would it be possible for the author to enlarge on this very important matter of "cataclysmic types of failures? " J. J. Kanter.—Of course, it is always a delicate matter to discuss specific failures. I would prefer to keep the present discussion on fundamentals and principles. H. L. Burghof.*—Mr. Kanter, I should like to ask what you consider the responsibility of the designer in avoiding stress concentrations that would lead to these types of failures? J. J. Kanter.—lt was my feeling in looking over the papers of this symposium that they were significantly lacking in consideration of what happens to the metals when strained under conditions that lead to rupture. Often creep tests are run that produce only a fractional percentage of the deformation, in several thousand hours. That kind of information gives the designer no assurance whatever that cracks will not result in his structure at points where stress concentrations, and therefore deformation concentrations, exist. I think anyone in this day and age who presents a paper on creep should incorporate with those studies a thorough investigation of creep rupture if it is expected to make an impression upon the design engineer.

IT has been known for many years that the magnetic properties of a ferromagnetic material are very sensitive to internal strain. Any structure-sensitive property such as ferromagnetism, which is a-function of the regularity of the atomic arrangement, and discontinuities such as grain boundaries must show deviations from an equilibrium state when the regularity of the lattice is disturbed. Experience has shown that such distortions have a marked effect on the magnetic properties of a ferromagnetic material. The purpose of this paper is to show the feasibility of using magnetic methods in detecting internal strains. More specifically, it will be shown how such properties as permeability, remanence, and coercive force change on cold- working of aluminum iron and how these magnetic properties change during the annealing below the recrystallization temperatures. This work was conducted for two reasons. One was the desire to see in what manner strains are relieved in aluminum iron at low temperatures-a subject of practical importance in soft magnetic materials-and the other was the feeling that a study of cold-working and strain relief might shed some light honour understanding of what takes place in the deformation of metals DEFINITION IN TERMS It is necessary to define the terminology used in this paper because magnetic nomenclature is usually unfamiliar to the metallurgist, and certain other terms, such as recovery, have been used ambiguously by metallurgists and others. Magnetic terms are best explained by reference to the common hysteresis loop of ferromagnetic materials (Fig. I). In Fig. I the coordinates are magnetic induction, B, (ordinate) and magnetizing force, H, (abscissa). The c.g.s. unit for the magnetic induction is the gauss, the number of flux lines per square centimeter, and the unit for the magnetizing force is the oersted, the number of lines of force per centimeter in air or vacuum. If one starts with a completely de- magnetized specimen and magnetizes it, a typical virgin magnetization curve beginning at the origin is obtained. This curve is also the locus of tips of a family of smaller hysteresis loops. From this curve it is to be noted that the induction is not proportional to the magnetizing force, and that it appears to approach a limiting induction called the saturation value, and does so for values of H of 1000 oersteds. The ratio of the magnetic induction (gauss) to the magnetizing force (oersteds) is called permeability, p. Thus µ = B/H and if the magnetizing force H (oersteds) is specified as 10 or IOO oersteds, the permeability is written as µ10 or µ100. This is the accepted notation, and will be used in this paper. E. M. BROHL. It seems as though the physicists in this crowd in the case of the cartridge cases have been a little in advance of the chemists in the crowd. What I am curious about here, and the way this appears to me, without too much study, is that in season cracking we get an atomic distortion so that both by sound means and by magnetic means we are finding a reluctance of the atomic planetary system to line up in accordance with the so-called good metal. The point that is brought up, or rather that has not been brought up-and I think perhaps we could think of that from the chemical point of view-is that this season cracking as I am used to the stress-corrosion cracking, appears to act much as though it were copper oxide. You remember when YOU take copper oxide films in which we again use this distortion of the atomic system to allow currents to pass selectively in one direction only, we get results almost identical with what we saw on the oscillograph report. In other words, on the one section of this season cracking we had a trace of one phase and if you notice on the sections three and four of the numbered oscillograph trace we had what appears 180 deg. out of phase.

Bauxite, the principal source of aluminum, has been mined from deposits in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., since 1899; war needs have greatly stimulated production. Many of the ore deposits are basin-shaped and either outcrop or are covered by a shallow-depth overburden at their peripheries; these are mined by stripping and open-pit methods. When stripping becomes economically impracticable, incline shafts or slopes are sunk on the dips of the deposits, and underground mining is done on the retreat, using a room-and-pillar method.

In the course of a series of investigations on vanadium deposits of the western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected many hundreds of samples for chemical analysis. As uranium is often associated with these vanadium minerals, they were also analyzed for uranium, which was pound to be absent in a large percentage of the samples. Since the usual methods for determining uranium are laborious and time-consuming it is very desirable to have some simple qualitative test that can be applied prior to a quantitative analysis to determine whether uranium is present or absent and thus save the time and expense of applying the quantitative analysis to the large proportion of samples containing no uranium. To be acceptable, the test should be specific for cranium, sensitive enough to detect small amounts of uranium, and. simple enough to make it worthwhile to apply. The available methods for detecting uranium lacked one or more of the desired characteristics. Eventually, however, a method was worked out that satisfied all the requirements. This method is probably more specific and sensitive than the usual qualitative methods for uranium, and its simplicity and speed of application make it ideal for testing samples prior to quantitative analysis.

Hydrogen sulfite has been listed (1)3/ as a possible hazard in 50 occupations, many of which are in the mineral industries. The effects of its occurrence in the petroleum industry made themselves felt more than two decades ago, resulting in a comprehensive study (2) of the toxic gases from Mexican and other high-sulfur petroleum products. The mining industry, likewise, has had cause to guard against this gas. Enough hydrogen sulfide has been found in coal and some noncoal mines during normal operations to cause severe eye irritation, some serious illness, end even fatalities. It is usually a product of the decomposition of sulfur compounds and may be produced by burning explosives containing sulfur; the gas in harmful qauntities is formed by the use of block blasting powder or by the use of dynamite in blasting sulfide ores. Hydrogen sulfide is readily soluble in water, and enough may be released from water streams in coal and noncoal mining to cause fatal poisoning it is found sometimes in stagnant water underground, particularly where ventilation currents are absent, and great care must be exercised when accumulations of such waters are disturbed, as exposure to comparatively low concentrations of the gas evolved therefrom has caused fatal accidents.

DURING recent years considerable interest has been focused on the energy-absorption characteristics of metal when it is cyclically stressed in vibration. The most familiar manifestation of this phenomenon, which is called the "damping capacity" or "internal friction" of a material, is involved in the dissipation of mechanical energy of vibration, which otherwise would build up to stress levels where the problems of noise and fatigue are involved. In addition to its engineering importance in structures, the damping behavior of metals, particularly at low stress amplitudes, has also been used as a unique metallurgical research tool with which to provide sensitive means for indicating certain structural changes within metals. Important contributions toward understanding the energy-dissipating mechanisms that are responsible for internal friction in metals have been made in the last few years. The information is not yet sufficiently extensive, however, to provide a useful metallurgical concept describing exactly how the structure affects the internal friction, or to encourage more general use of this technique among metallurgists. Three fundamental mechanisms have been proposed, as a result of recent experimental investigations, to account for the internal friction in nonferrous metals in low-stress amplitude tests. These include damping due to internal thermal currents that are created and flow in metal because of differential vibratory stress effects,1 damping due to localized inelastic stress relaxation at inhomogeneities within the metal,2,3 and damping related to plastic flow of a localized type for which an explanation has been sought in terms of the dislocation theory.4 How each of these mechanisms functions as a result of structural changes in the metal is, in general, not well understood because of insufficient experimental data for which the controlling variables have been segregated and because of uncertainties in regard to the nature of the structural changes themselves. In several investigations the effects of cold-working on the internal friction of polycrystalline brass and aluminum have been described. As reported by Köster and Rosenthal,5 and by Förster and Breitfield,6 there is an initial large increase in the damping when the metal is worked. The initial high value is not stable, but declines rapidly, at first, in a hyperbolic manner. About 100 hr, after straining, a stable value is reached of magnitude proportional to the amount of strain.7 In Fig. I is shown the relationship found by Zener and his collaborators between the internal friction due to cold-working of alpha brass and the amount of cold-working.8 Several investigators have made internal-friction measurements on worked poly-

THE solid fuel industry, especially that branch represented by bituminous coal, is gradually becoming aware of its ? paramount importance in a world where there is an ever increasing demand for the products of a mechanical age. In practically every process of manufacture, the necessity for energy in some form is being multiplied. Some of that prime energy is derived from water power-hydro-electric schemes, flood control schemes, etc. - but often the electrical energy thus developed is generated at great distances from the load centres, requiring long transmission lines with consequent transformer and transmission losses. A few plants have harnessed the tidal power of the seas and one has harnessed the energy of the wind in a modern manner. All of these schemes are dependent on certain natural geographical, hydrographical, and physical advantages of terrain, as well as an adequate area of consumption of the energy developed. If flood control is the primary object, then power generation is a by-product; and the economics of large capital expenditure on power generating equipment must be considered in that light.

The prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first was published in 1937; the second in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research.HARMLESSNESS OF ALUMINIUMAnimal experiments having served their purpose, it became necessary to consider means to test the discovery on humans. A question for immediate consideration was: Is aluminium harmful to man when inhaled as a fine powder? While the animal experiments were reassuring, since they conclusively showed the powder to be innocuous when breathed by animals, it was, nevertheless, desirable to have additional reassurance with regard to its effect upon human beings.Through the courtesy of the Aluminium Company of America and especially the valued interest in this problem displayed by that Company's Director of Research, Dr. Francis C. Frary, a study was made of the records pertaining to the health of a group of 125 employees who had for many years been engaged in the manufacture of finely powdered, metallic aluminium for the paint and ink industries. The conditions were such that these employees had inhaled varying and oft-times very dense concentrations of this powder daily over periods ranging from 6 to 23 years, the average 101 the group being 12 years. X-ray pictures of their chests showed no abnormalities attributable to aluminium. Their general health seemed better than that of the 3,000 workers in other sections of the plant. In fact, the early films of three employees in this group of 125 showed shadows suggestive of minimal tuberculosis, which shadows were not discernible in films taken after considerable periods of exposure to aluminium powder.The harmlessness of aluminium was; by this study, reasonably well established at the outset, a finding subsequently verified by Ontario research on humans.PROPOSAL TO TREAT HUMAN SILICOSISBased upon these findings, a proposal to treat silicotics with aluminium was discussed by officials of the Mclntyre Mine and the Banting Institute.

For many years the permeability of reservoir sands has been measured by flowing air through a cleaned and dried core sample. This differs from the true reservoir permeability in one important respect: the rock particles in the reservoir are surrounded by interstitial water, not air, and their physical shape and condition of hydration are greatly dependent thereon. Permeability as defined must be measured with a single-phase fluid. Since no means exist for removing the oil and gas from a core sample by simply flowing water through it, the sample must be cleaned and then resatu-rated with water before testing. The present discussion attempts to show that after the cleaning process a considerably different permeability is determined with salt or fresh water than is obtained with air. The postulate is made that the salt-water permeability is probably closer to the true reservoir permeability than is the measurement with air. This is discussed in relation to both physically possible and economically feasible measuremerits. Data On more than 1200 core samples are given to show the nature of the effects observed, and a plea is made for others to consider water permeability measurements as a routine necessity, eventually replacing air permeability in regions where the differences are great. Introduction Permeability is defined1 as a "a measure of the capacity of a porous medium to transmit fluids, when there is no interaction between the solids and the fluid." Darcy's law of liquid flow in porous media states: kA?P QµL/A?L [I] where Q represents milliliters of liquid of viscosity p centipoises passed per second through a porous medium of permeability k darcys and cross-sectional area A sq. cm. under a pressure gradient ?P/L atmospheres per centimeter, the flow being understood to be laminar or viscous, not turbulent. This equation defines the darcy. For the case of radial flow in a uniform sand, such as usually exists in the neighborhood of a well in an oil or gas sand, Darcy's law becomes:2 Here h is the net sand thickness in feet, Pe and Pw are pressures at the drainage radius4 and well radius, and re and rw are these radii, respectively. Enthalpy-entropy diagrams are presented for natural gases of 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, and 1.0 gravity over the pressure range of 5 to 10,000 Ib. per sq. in. and temperature range of 32º to 700°F. The charts indicate directly the work requirement and temperature rise for adiabatic compression or temperature change for free emansion of natural eases. Computation and Uses of Charts The Mollier diagram (Fig. 4), in which the enthalpy (heat content) is plotted against the entropy with lines of constant temperature, pressure,, and in some cases volume, has been found most convenient when dealing with the compression, expansion, and flow of fluids. In dealing with the flow of fluids, the sum of the increase in the enthalpy, AH, plus the increase in kinetic energy, AM —, plus the increase in potential energy, ?MZ, representing the total increase in energy of the fluid in flow, is equal to the sum of the heat q, and work added, —w, to the fluid while flowing between the entrance and exit of the flow system. AH + AM— + ?MZ = q-w [1] In cases where there is no significant change in potential energy or in kinetic energy (velocity), it follows that the increase in enthalpy is equal to the total energy supplied to the fluid. Under such conditions' the changes in the property of the fluid as it flows through a throttling valve, choke, or any other similar arrangement, may be read directly from the enthalpy-entropy diagram by following a horizolltal line between the known pressures' When compressing Or expanding a gas by means of a Or or engine in which no heat is added to or subtracted from the gas, but only work done, the changes in the properties of the gas may be determined along a vertical line of constant entropy between the entering and exit pressures. The power required for the compression of the gas may be readily determined by converting the increase in enthalpy into the desired units. The enthalpy-entropy diagram for natural gases is to the gas engineer what the steam diagram is to the steam-power engineer. For this reason it would be extremely convenient if a reasonably satisfactory enthalpy-entropy diagram could be prepared as a function of the gravity of the gas. A careful study of the known properties of natural gas indicate that this is possible. The effect of temperature upon the enthalpy at constant pressure is expressed as the "heat capacity" or "specific heat" of the gas. The best available data for natural and petroleum refinery gases indicates the relationship shown in Fig. I. From this it is clear that the specific heat of natural gases is a function only of the gas gravity and the temperature at atmospheric pressure. Steel and iron pipe lined with cement to protect it against corrosion has been used in the municipal water systems of the New England States since about 1870. In most recent years, the petroleum industry adopted cement-lined pipe to forestall corrosion, particularly in those areas where large quantities of corrosive brines and hydrogen sulfide are associated with the oil produced. Many of the oil companies had on hand large quantities of corroded pipe, normally disposed of as scrap, which could be cleaned, lined with cement, and returned to service. It was soon learned that after the so-called scrap pipe was lined with cement much of it could serve fully as well as new cement-lined pipe. The demand for lining used pipe with cement resulted in the establishment of several processing, plants in the Mid-Continent oil-producing area. Today six cement-lining plants serve the areas three in Oklahoma and one each in Kansas, Texas, and Illinois. All of these plants have lined large quantities of used pipe for the brine-disposal systems of western Kansas, Illinois, and east Texas and also for the operators of water-flooding projects in northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas, where large quantities of brine and fresh water are being injected into the oil-bearing formations as a secondary oil-recovery method. Since war demands during the past 2 years have created an acute shortage of steel, the need of reclaiming used pipe for the expansion of oil-producing operations has become more evident than ever before. Thus the new industry (about 6 years old) - lining used pipe with cement - is saving large quantities of steel at a critical time by reclaiming used pipe and preventing further- corrosion.

THE mechanical properties of magnesium-alloy castings are greatly improved by grain refinement, and at present considerable attention is being paid to methods of obtaining fine-grained castings. One method of achieving this end is the use of proper melting and superheating techniques. These have been employed commercially to a great extent, but no comprehensive study of the subject appears to have been published at present. Numerous investigations found in the literature include some reference to superheating techniques, 1-4 and Achenbach, Nipper and Piwowarsky,5 based principally on thermal analysis, ascribe the grain-refining action of superheating to the influence of solid foreign particles or dissolved gases present in the melt upon the course of crystallization. The primary purpose of this paper is to present the principal facts concerning the effect of superheating on grain size of magnesium alloys. Attempts are also made to explain the experimental results in terms of a general hypothesis. The investigations are limited chiefly to common commercial casting alloys. In order to carry on this work, it was necessary to determine the factors influencing grain size and to develop a proper technique for the preparation of samples. The preliminary tests made by the author indicated that the grain size of magnesium alloys resulting from the solidification of a melt is determined by alloy composition, presence of impurities, rate of cooling during solidification, thermal history of the melt and to some extent the structure of the charge used. The rate of cooling is in turn dependent upon the mass of the melt, pouring temperature, and dimensions, properties and temperature of the mold into which the melt is poured. The final grain size of the alloys is still further modified by heat-treatment subsequent to casting. It is not within the scope of the present paper to discuss all of these factors, and it would suffice to note here that when equal amounts of magnesium alloys are prepared from the same alloying materials, melted in graphite crucibles under the same thermal conditions, then cast into graphite molds at a constant temperature, the .resultant solids have the same grain size. By maintaining all other factors constant, it is thus possible to vary thermal conditions of a melt and to examine the grain size of resultant castings. PREPARATION OF SAMPLES AND GRAIN-SIZE TESTING The alloys investigated in this paper were taken from ingots made by Permanente Metals Corporation or prepared by the author with pure carbothermic magnesium and necessary alloying elements.
