THE anodic treatment of aluminum presents problems of scientific as well as of commercial interest.1-3 Of particular interest is the fact that, during the anodic oxidation process, the oxide continues to form at the metal-oxide interface under any oxide previously formed. This has led to speculation as to the mechanism involved in the formation of the relatively thick oxide coatings that are used commercially for decorative or protective purposes. Furthermore, the ability of certain types of oxide coatings to adsorb dyes and other substances has stimulated research to determine the actual structure of these adsorptive coatings. It has been found that anodic oxide coatings on aluminum are composed essentially of aluminum oxide. They are formed by the action of oxygen ions penetrating to the metal surface during the electrolytic oxidation treatment. These coatings can be formed in a number of different electrolytes, as for example, those which contain sulphuric acid, chromic acid, oxalic acid, or boric acid. These are the commonest and most useful electrolytes employed commercially. Except for certain specific conditions of formation, the coatings in general have been found to be amorphous alumina, as far as can be determined by X-ray or electron-diffraction methods. Anodic oxidation processes can be arranged in three rather general classes if they are grouped in relation to the solvent action of the electrolyte on the coating.4 In the first class, the electrolyte has little or no solvent action on the coating that is formed. In general, coatings produced under such circumstances are nonporous and non- adsorptive. In the second class, the electrolyte exerts an appreciable solvent action on the coating. These coatings are porous and adsorptive. Finally, for the third class, the electrolyte tends to dissolve the coating about as rapidly as it is formed. This action produces electrolytic brightening or anodic polishing of the aluminum surface and at most leaves only a very thin film of oxide. The nonporous and nonadsorptive type of oxide film is represented by the coatings that are formed when solutions of boric acid are employed as the electrolyte. It is especially significant that these impervious films are formed in electrolytes that exert little or no solvent action on the coating. Where a boric acid electrolyte is used, the coating tends to form rapidly, with the result that the flow of current is soon reduced to substantially zero. This indicates that the growth of the coating has stopped. As a rule, the thickness of the coating is roughly proportional to the voltage employed for formation and the coatings of this type are exceedingly thin. THE sand and gravel used for backfilling at the Hollinger mine is obtained from deposits in a low range of hills some three miles north of the mine, where the Company owns a number of claims. The material is transported to the mine by aerial tram. Shipments from these deposits to the Hollinger mine commenced in June, 1927, and since May, 1936, sand has been supplied also to the McIntyre mine. During 1942, Hollinger requirements were 1,700 tons per day, and 900 tons per day was delivered to McIntyre. For the past seven years production has averaged 900,000 tons annually, and total deliveries to the end of 1942 were 13,129,022 tons, of which 11,075,339 tons went to Hollinger and 2,053,683 tons to McIntyre. Some years ago, when the original pit was approaching exhaustion, new workings were opened on claims east and south of the tramway terminal. It soon became apparent that the sand varies considerably in character from place to place. The weight per cubic foot was found to range from 85 to 130 lb., and the water percolation rate from 2 to 50 inches per hour. As the mine requirement is a sand with percolation rate of 6 inches or better per hour, it was evident that in certain parts of the deposits the material was not suitable for use as backfill. As a consequence, it was decided to carry out a programme of systematic sampling of the claims in order to select the areas containing suitable material for back-fill and at the same time estimate the tonnage available.

For sixty years—in fact, ever since the inception of the basic steelmaking process —basic slags have been the subject of study by chemists, metallurgists and petrog-raphers! with the purpose of providing a better understanding of the reactions between the slag and the metal during the refining process. The result of this work and of the researches of mineralogists and physical chemists into the chemistry of oxide systems is a considerable body of literature dealing not only with slags themselves but with equilibrium relationships in systems synthesized from pure components. Since any actual slag is a multicom-ponent system more complex than any yet worked out in the laboratory, a complete solution to the problem is still far away. The writers have recently published a paper1 which they believe sheds light on the role of the slag in the elimination of phosphorus and it is the purpose of the present paper to discuss the metallurgical applications of that work. Since the pioneer investigations on the constitution of basic slags carried on by Stead and Risdale, Carnot and Richards, Hilgenstock and others in the I88o's, a considerable body of literature on this subject has appeared. Many of the more important of these papers were summarized in the previous paper,l therefore they will not be reviewed here. PetRographic Study The present writers have had occasion, over a period of years, to examine petro-graphically a great number of basic steel-making slags having a very wide range of chemical compositions and made under various conditions of operating practice. Although certain of these slags exhibit some unusual features, it is a remarkable fact that the great majority of mature slags show certain typical characteristics, which persist throughout the wide range of chemical compositions. The typical mature slag usually appears under the microscope to consist of two phases. The phase of primary crystallization is light colored and doubly refracting. If separated mechanically and subjected to chemical analysis, it is found to consist essentially of SiO2, CaO, and P2O6. Sometimes, although not usually, two such silicate-phosphate phases are found. The other conspicuous phase is dark in color and optically isotropic, and occurs as the interstitial material between the grains of the light colored phase. This dark colored interstitial phase when analyzed is found to consist essentially of FeO, Fe2O3, MnO, and MgO. In some 'lags high in iron oxide, particularly those from low-carbon heats, dicalcium ferrite is found. This phase is dark reddish brown in color and anisotropic.

SEGREGATION can occur only in cast alloys that solidify over a range of temperatures with a difference in composition of liquid and solid phases within this range (ignoring monotectic systems and chemical reactions as in rimming. steels). Thus a pure binary eutectic alloy should show no segregation unless undercooling occurs for one of the solid constituents of the eutectic; e.g., chill-cast Al-12 per cent Si alloys. The phasial condition implicitly described above-solidification over a range of temperatures with a compositional difference between solid. and liquid-is found in nearly all solid solutions or combinations of solid solutions and eutectics. Metastable conditions of solidification of these types of alloys cause coring; i.e., a difference in composition between the center of a dendrite and its periphery. This composition gradient can be detected usually only by microscopic examination of etched structures; it is a "micro" effect. The gradient of more immediate industrial concern is that between the center of a cast section and the surface layers. This gross (macro) effect is usually determinable only by sampling of the casting at different points, with chemical analyses of each sample. If the compositional difference is of the same type as in coring, the first parts to freeze being enriched in higher-melting-point constituents, and vice versa, the effect is called normal segregation. When what is apparently the first part of the casting to solidify shows a higher concentration of low-melting-point constituents, the effect is called inverse segregation. These macro effects are quite separate from the micro effect, coring, yet the latter must be. described first because it is an essential part of the picture. CORING Solid Solution, Ni-Cu The nickel-copper phase diagram is reproduced in Fig. Ia, in which the solid lines represent the equilibrium liquidus 1, 3, 7 and solidus 2, 5, 8, and where the vertical 1, 4, 8 represents a 55 per cent Cu alloy. Upon moderately rapid solidification, the first dendritic axes of composition 2 (see Fig. 1b) start to form at a temperature somewhat under I. Solidification continues by growth of the dendritic nuclei, but at temperature 4 the increment solidifying is of composition 5. The rapidity of this crystal growth prevents diffusion of nickel and copper atoms from adjusting the composition of the entire dendrite at 5, which it would be under equilibrium conditions. MOST metallurgists are well acquainted with the contributions already made to the study of metals by the use of X-rays. On the one hand, the radiographic method is constantly becoming of increasing importance as a nondestructive testing procedure, while on the other hand the techniques of X-ray diffraction have made important contributions to the fundamental knowledge in studies of phase diagrams, stress conditions, and so forth. A new, and as yet insufficiently appreciated, tool exists in the application of microradiography to alloy structures. This new procedure in many respects bears the same relation to microscopic investigations as does macroradiography to the gross inspection of metal surfaces. However, where macroradiography is used ordinarily to determine the soundness of the metal structure, this new method can be used not only to investigate micro-un- soundness but also to examine the distribution of the constituent elements within the body of the alloy. When combined with the normal procedures of microscopy, this offers a technique of great potential power. It is intended in this paper to present a few examples of copper-base alloys demonstrating the additional knowledge obtained from the microradiographic method. The detection of micro-unsoundness is demonstrated in Fig. I for a sample of cartridge brass as cast. The sample appeared quite sound when viewed under the microscope, but in reality was thickly populated with minute voids. This application of the method conforms in every way to conventional large-scale radiography and has been used to facilitate production of metal for vacuum devices.1 The true potentialities of the technique are revealed by comparison of Figs. 2a and 2b, which are respectively a- photomicrograph and a microradiograph of a cast alloy of 80 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Sn, 10 per cent Pb. The remarkable difference in appearance provides some concept of the additional information this method may yield when used as an auxiliary to microscopic studies. Fig. 2a shows two phases of the copper-tin system plus segregated lumps of lead. Fig. ab, on the other hand, shows with exceptional clarity the actual dendritic growth of the metal crystals during solidification. The practice of microradiography depends upon the laws of absorption of X-rays. This subject has been reviewed thoroughly in recent papers,1,2,3 but for clarity a brief resumé will be given here. As is well known, when a beam of X-rays is transmitted through a layer of homogeneous material, the intensity is reduced according to the relation:[ ]

THE Ross mine, a subsidiary operation of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited, is situated near the north end of lot 1, concession 2, Hislop township, Ontario. The property comprises the north half of lot 1, concession 2, and the south one-third of lot 1, concession 3. It is readily reached by a good motor road from the village of Ramore, 7.5 miles to the southeast on the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway. The-mine has been developed to a depth of 900 feet and the current daily production rate is about 260 tons. From the inception of operations in March, 1935, until December 31st, 1942, 455,720 tons of ore with a total value of $4,169,-316 have been milled. The silver to gold ratio of 1.48 to 1 is unusually high for Ontario gold mines. The deposit is interesting because the relationship between hydrothermal metamorphism and three successive stages of fracturing and mineralization is marked with considerable clarity. During the past seven years, detailed geological maps of the mine have been kept up to date, many thousands of feet of diamond-drill core have been logged, and numerous thin and polished ore sections have been studied. The present paper describes the structure and mineralogy of the orebodies.

For three years The Hudson Coal Co. has used egg anthracite instead of coke in its foundry cupola. It has long passed the stage of being told it cannot be done—the metal would be cold, of poor quality, or the speed of operation would be low. From observation, from use and from test. we know that our metal is about average; the cast iron invokes no adverse comment from the machine shop and the speed suits our foundry requirements. We have there-iore resolved into practice anthracite combustion processes in an industrial furnace formerly using coke, under conditions suitable to our needs. When it comes to translating what we know into use in another cupola, however, where operating conditions may be different, or to explaining why, with seemingly the same conditions in our own cupola, we have attained sometimes a temperature of 2800° in the metal and at another time 2600°, or a speed of 5 tons per hour against 2 35 tons per hour, we cannot do it. We cannot do this because there seems to be an unbridged gap between laboratory ideas on combustion and practical ideas on com-bustiqn, which we have been unable to cross in terms understandable to us as practical consumers. This gap or bridge centers around the problem of how combustion actually takes place; and we believe it is controlled by two factors: (I) the character of the surface of the fuel and (2) the space provided and needed within which the oxygen of the air is allowed to or can act on that surface. It has long been contended on behalf of coke that porosity is an important factor in combustion, although, admittedly, there are two schools of opposing thought on this question, as revealed in technical literature. It has been understood generally that a light, porous coke is the best metallurgical fuel because there are more square inches of carbon exposed to the blast of air, therefore more useful carbon-dioxide reactions can take place in the given space between the entrance of the air and the point where useful work is done. It is now our general idea that the heavier and the harder the coal, the better the metallurgical fuel, provided the surface of that fuel is suitable for fast reaction with the oxygen. Time and Space A cupola is loaded in layers of fuel and iron. The horizontal line where the first charge of iron rests on the coal is the top of the bed coal. With us that is 22 in., usually, above the tuyeres where the air enters. This means 600 lb. of coal. Every subsequent coal layer is 100 to 125 lb. of coal, and that 100 to 125 lb. of coal melts 1000 lb. of iron at around 2700° in the ladle. This quantity of coal represents a 3-in. layer spread across the cupola. The question arises: If this 3 in. of coal will melt 1000 lb. of metal, why was it necessary to use 600 lb., or 22 in., of coal beneath and between the first charge of iron and the air entrance?

A list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1942, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7207.3/ The list of that date was complete as to equipment then available and in current use. Information Circular 7240,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved curing the calendar year 1943. The present list is another supplement covering approvals issued during the calendar year 1943. The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7207 gave 19 drills and drilling machines on the Bureau's active list. No additional approvals were given in 1942, but the three issued in 1943 bring the total to 22. Item 102, under Loading Machines and Conveyors, also appeared in Information Circular 7207, and items 120 and 124 appeared in Information Circular 7240. These numbers are repeated here to show that approvals were granted during 1943 for additional voltages on machines previously listed for one voltage only. Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. MUCH discussion has occurred as to the use or uses which might be made after the war of either or both .of the large diameter (24 inch and 20 inch) War Emergency pipe lines built by y the United States Government during the war, to move crude petroleum and refined products such as gasoline and light distillate fuels. Indeed, the disposition and future use of these lines constitutes, in the minds of many people, one of the most important problems of postwar readjustment in the Oil Industry. The two lines, running from points in Texas to the New York-New Jersey-Philadelphia area, were constructed only because of the inability during the war to continue normal ocean tanker movements from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast. Physically they could continue after the war to move crude or refined products, and it appears that lines of such large diameter as these, if operated at or near capacity, could move these liquids at costs per barrel which might be considered in the same general cost range as for tanker movements.1 If, therefore, we were to look forward at the end of the war to a shortage of tankers, it is probable that the continued use of these pipe lines for petroleum movements to the East Coast would be worth considering, as against building new tankers to take over the movement, provided there were no other economic or national defense reasons for restoring tanker fleets and no other better use for the pipe lines. Because of the extensive tanker construction program which has been and still is in progress, and because of our Navy's marked success in combating the submarine problem, it appears to be quite possible, however, that instead of a shortage of tankers at the end of the war, we may have a surplus instead. If this should turn out to be the case, then there would seem to be considerable doubt that these lines would continue to be used for moving petroleum or products to the East Coast at the expense of tying up tankers. It would hardly seem probable that the owner of any such tankers would ship via one of the large lines at the expense of tying up one of its own tankers, unless the pipe line tariff rate charged was lower than the out-of-pocket cost of operating a tanker as against the out-of-pocket cost of keeping it tied up. And considering that a substantial part of the cost of operating a tanker goes on even when it is tied up, it is very difficult to figure out how any pipeline tariff could be established that would be low enough to compete with individually owned tankers that otherwise would be idle. Certainly a pipe line tariff rate high enough to cover direct costs plus even a low rate of depreciation and return on the investment would be far above the out-of-pocket tanker operating costs. In view of these considerations, it has seemed desirable to examine with some care some of the various alternatives that have been suggested as to other possible uses to which these lines might be put. One of these is for transportation of natural gas to the New York-New Jersey Philadelphia area. This Eastern area, located at the destination of these lines, contains the heaviest concentration of population in the United States, and is not now served with natural gas. At the other end of the lines lie the greatest discovered natural gas reserves in the United States, if not in the world, and many

A summary of the reservoir engineering and related geologic data on the Schuler field, Union County, Arkansas, is presented here in a manner intended to interest both technical and nontechnical readers. The Cotton Valley formation and the Reynolds oolite are oil-productive formations in the Schuler field, but the Jones sand pool, at a depth of 7500 ft., developed with 146 wells on zo-acre spacing, is the reservoir of principal interest. The Jones sand sandstone reservoir is an anticlinal trap typically gas-drive or depletion type in performance. The core analyses from 88 per cent of the wells drilled, together with drilling time and electric-log data, yield an accurate estimate of the "productive" sand thickness and its areal distribution over the pool. Accurate production statistics, monthly reservoir-pressure surveys, and bottom-hole sample analyses when correlated by the "material-balance equation" show unusually good agreement with that principle. Estimates of oil initially in place made by the material-balance method and the sand-volume method are in good agreement at 116 to rzo million barrels. The reservoir-pressure history of the pool reflects the reaction of a reservoir to production, proration and secondary-recovery practices. The cost of the extensive program of reservoir study in the Jones sand pool has been estimated, in order to emphasize the value derived from such an investment through better understanding of a reservoir's reaction to production practices. Unit operation of 140 of the 146 Jones sand wells made possible an effective unitized gas-injection pressure-maintenance program. Res-ervoir-pressure decline was arrested, natural flow was maintained, and pumping and lease equipment were conserved. An increased ultimate recovery of zo million barrels beyond the estimated 34 million barrels primary recovery is indicated at present. Extension of the Jones sand unit to include the undeveloped Cotton Valley formation will permit additional recovery of otherwise uneconomic reserves of oil through wells no longer required in the Jones sand operations. Introduction The Schuler field comprises approximately 4000 acres in and about sec. 18, T. 18 S., R. 17 W. in west central Union County, Arkansas. Three reservoirs are procluctive of oil and gas: the Cotton Valley formation, the Jones sand, and the Reynolds oolite section of the Smackover limestone. The Jones sand pool is the most important reservoir from an engineering viewpoint. It possesses the traditional and somewhat classic characteristics usually associated with an anticlinal trap. Development and operations have followed the dictates of advanced engineering practices. The pool has attracted attention because of the unusually detailed reservoir data obtained, its interesting production history, and the success of the unitized gas-injection pres-sure-maintenance operation now being carried out. Although the thoughts and efforts of the great majority of people in many parts of the world are today directed toward killing each other, the purpose of this paper is to discuss means of conserving human life. In a world of turmoil and strife, we find time to discuss and make plans to achieve our objective -prevention of the "sacrifice" of life through avoidable accidents. The word" sacrifice" is used here advisedly, as one meaning of the word given in the 1942 edition of Funk and Wagnalls New Dictionary of the English Language is "the act of giving up some desired or valued object for the sake of *** future good." As everyone agrees that life is man's most priceless possession, one wonders if past sacrifices have been in vain. It appears that life is cheap in America; it is cheap because some of the industrialists are too much concerned with making a profit to devote much time and thought to conserving human life; it is cheap because some labor leaders apparently are interested solely in personal power and prestige; it is cheap because a great many workmen fail or refuse to cooperate energetically with the various organizations interested ill; their safety and welfare; it is of little value because, individually and collectively, we are indifferent to our responsibilities toward our fellow men.

Because of the extensive use of Alclad 24s alloy sheet in aircraft construction, there is much interest in the metallurgical changes caused by heat-treatment of this product.1, 2 One of these changes is the result of the diffusion of soluble elements from the core into the coating during treatment. This paper deals with the thermal treatments that may influence diffusion and with the practical effects of diffusion on the serviceability of the product. As is well known, Alclad 24s-T sheet has a core of high-strength alloy combined with surface layers of relatively pure aluminum. The microstructure of a cross section of this product is shown by Fig. I. Not only does the relatively high-purity coating have a high resistance to corrosion, and hence serves as a mechanical barrier between the core metal and the corroding environment, but in addition this coating exerts electrochemical protection over areas where the core may be exposed, such as cut edges. In addition, the coating affords electrochemical protection to projecting heads of A17s-T, 17s-T and 24s-T rivets, or attached members made from these alloys. Under some conditions of heat-treatment, however, diffusion of copper into the coating will alter the electrochemical relationship between the coating and the core to the extent that only partial protection will be obtained under some corrosive conditions. The reason for the electrochemical protection lies in the fact that the coating layers of pure aluminum are anodic to the alloy core. The addition of copper to aluminum produces alloys in which the potential is lower than that of the pure metal. Moreover, as the amount of copper in solid solution in 24s alloy is increased, the potential of the alloy becomes more cathodic. When heat-treated at 920°F. and quenched in cold water, 24s-T is about 0.16 volt cathodic to pure aluminum. However, copper will diffuse from the core into the coating, and if it reaches the surface the potential will be altered in a cathodic direction. Thus the potential difference between the core and coating may be less than 0.16 volt, depending uponIthe thickness of the coating, and the time and temperature of heat-treatment. Of the methods available for determining the extent of diffusion of copper from the core into the coating of Alclad 24s-T, two are generally used; namely, the metallo-graphic and the solution potential methods.3 Metallographic Methods Metallographic methods will reveal the progress of diffusion of copper into the coating. For instance, the diffusion zone in the coating intermediate between the coating surface and the core is shown in Fig. I. This photomicrograph is of a polished and etched cross section of 0.040-in. Alclad 24s-T sheet. Diffusion proceeds into the coating more rapidly along the grain boundaries than through the body of the grains. Consequently, the diffusion zone is not of uniform width

CHARGING of an open-hearth heat is begun as soon as possible after the previous heat has been tapped. Ordinarily, about 40 min. is required to drain and dress the furnace hearth, make up the tap hole, and perform routine repairs of the banks. Repairs to the upper back wall and to the front wall and jambs can ordinarily be done while the first scrap charge is being heated and are therefore allowed to wait in order to save furnace time. Any major repairs required on the hearth or other parts of the furnace necessitate longer delays, because such repairs must be made while the furnace is empty. Although charging practice varies considerably in detail with the type and proportions of scrap and iron used, many factors are common to all varieties of' charge. Such general considerations are dealt with first. GENERAL CHARGING PRACTICE Charge materials are discussed in detail in Chapter IV; the present chapter is concerned with the charging, melting, and proportioning of the raw materials in the various types of furnace practice. Charging Equipment and Stock Handling. The physical equipment available for loading and weighing the stock, transporting it to the furnace, and charging it may have a major effect on charging practice. Limestone, scrap, and all other solid melting stock are charged mechanically by means of equipment described in Chapter I (see also Fig. 18, page 33). It is generally desirable to charge the scrap about as fast as the physical volume can be got into the furnace. A limiting factor may be the height to which the scrap may be piled in the furnace without deflecting the flame to such an extent that it will impinge on the roof or walls and thus damage the refractories, but light scrap may often be piled up near the roof since the flame usually "cuts it down" rapidly before impingement on any roof area can persist long enough to do appreciable harm. When the nature of the scrap and the handling facilities are adequate to meet the aim of rapid charging, little thought is given to this feature of operation. Unfortunately, at times

From a commercial standpoint, the only beryllium mineral warranting attention is beryl, 3Be.Al2O3.6SiO2, which is of fairly widespread occurrence. The chief deposits are in Brazil, Argentina, India, Canada and Portugal. When pure this contains about 14 per cent of beryllium oxide. The mineral richest in beryllium is phenacite, (BeO)2SiO2, or beryllium orth-osilicate, which contains 45.55 per cent beryllium oxide when pure, and if anyone is ever fortunate enough to discover a large deposit of it, it will revolutionize beryllium metallurgy. Gadoljnite, zBe0.Fe0.2Yz0~.zSi0~, is also often referred to as a beryllium mineral, though the occurrences are comparatively scant and it is of more interest as a source of yttrium than it is of beryllium. There has been a good deal of talk recently regarding some occurrences of helvite in the United States. Helvite is a complex manganese-iron beryllium silicate and, apart from difficulties that would arise in its treatment because of its compo-sition, the beryllium content of the known deposits is not high. Early Metallurgy The elemcnt beryllium was first isolated by L. N. Vauquelin in 1797.~ He crushed and heated beryl, having the idea that this heating made it more readily amenable to attack by chemicals, and then mixed the mineral with three times its weight of caustic potash and fused the mixture. The melt after cooling was dissolved in hydrochloric acid: dehydrated, and again taken up with hydrochloric acid and filtered to separate the silica. The filtrate was treated with an excess of potassium carbonate and the precipitate after draining was leached with a solution of caustic potash, which dissolved the alumina. The undissolved material was, in Vauquelin's own words, "une terre nouvelle." He dissolved the precipitate with nitric acid and evaporated it to dryness, took up with hydrochloric acid and threw the iron out with potassium hydrosulphide, though he found that to make a complete separation of the iron involved a second treatment. The solution, after throwing out of the iron, had a pronounced sweet taste, and though Vauquelin always speaks of working on "terre du beril" he suggests that the new element should be known as "glucine" (glucinum) from the Greek word for sweet, because of this outstanding property. Vauquelin did considerable work on the comparison of aluminum and beryllium, working out a separation of most of the aluminum based on its precipitation as alum. His work is reviewed at some length, since ordinarily his procedure is incorrectly stated. Metallic magnesium and similar meta!s near the top of the electromotive series have been commercially produced by the electrolysis of a suitable molten salt. Despite the success of electrolysis, sufficient inherent objections exist to justify the search for a direct reduction method. Such a method would widen the choice of raw materials, relax the rigid electrolytic requirements of raw-material purity, and, by obviating direct current, over simplicity of plant equipment. This paper describes the pilot-plant development of one such method, which has subsequently formed the basis of operation of six commercial plants-—one in Canada and five in the United States. Unlike aluminum, magnesium is volatile at relatively low temperatures. This physical property, which produces its greater inflammability, also offers possibilities of direct reduction that are not available with aluminum. In the basic reaction MgO + X = XO + Mg if X is nonvolatile, the reaction may be forced to the right at high temperatures by the evolution of magnesium vapor, despite the large negative value of the heat of reaction which is almost bound to follow the use of any available commercial reducing agent. The cheapest X, of course, is carbon, but this notable advantage is modified by the production of a volatile oxide CO, so that both Mg and CO are evolved simultaneously. Elaborate devices are required to shock-cool the equilibrium mixture in order to prevent back reaction. At best, a pyrophoric powder is produced, requiring redistillation to provide marketable metal. The practical development of this process, is due to F. Hansgirg, and his methods have recently been given a trial on a grand scale in the plant at Permanente, California, and smaller plants were previously built in Austria, England and Japan. A second class of reducing agents is available, those which produce nonvolatile oxides. When XO and X are relatively nonvolatile, magnesium is the only volatile member of the system. It may be evolved in a simple distillation step and condensed without the formation of powder. Two basic requirements must bc fulfilled in order that such a reaction may proceed: I. The reducing agent when heated to a reasonable temperature in presence of MgO must cause the production of an appreciable equilibrium vapor pressure of magnesium. This magnesium must be removed continuously. z. A supply of heat must be maintained. In order to fulfill the first requirement, operations must be conducted in vacuo or in a stream of Hz. HENRY MARION HOWE, in whose memory we are gathered together, was one of the great thinkers who develop from time to time to whom is given the rare gift of synthesis. Analysis is given to few, but synthesis, the ability to show the relation of all parts to each other and thus to give a clear picture of the whole, is reserved for the very few. Analysis can be achieved by honesty, intelligence, and industry, but synthesis is only given to genius Professor Howe's crowning achievement is the picture of the whole iron-carbon series shown in Fig. I, which places steel, malleable, gray iron, mottled and chilled irons in their proper relation to each other and shows the essential unity of the series. Perhaps his best statement of the case is found on page go of the Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron in these words: "Each member of the gray cast-iron series consists of the metallic matrix approximately equivalent to that member of the steel-white-cast-iron series to which it corresponds in percentage of combined carbon with its continuity broken up-by masses of graphite . . . " Apparently he had taken considerable interest in this idea around the turn of the century, for he refers to a discussion at the Franklin Institute in 1900 in which he said: "Though many others had probably conceived this relation between the steels and cast irons, it was here enunciated for the first time, so far as I know. It was received with great incredulity." The concept was explained in some detail in a paper on 'The Constitution of Cast Iron" presented before the A.S.T.M. in 1902 when Professor Howe was retiring president of that young society. In the discussion Dr. Sauveur stated that he was "very well acquainted with Professor Howe's theory of the constitution of cast iron," and went on to say that while he "shared it to the fullest extent, some foundrymen . . . claim cast iron is a metal entirely different from steel . . . that steel and cast iron have very little in common, and that therefore the knowledge gained in the study of steel is of little or no value in the study of cast iron." Dr. Moldenke, in discussing the same paper, said he had been working on the same theory for 12 years but he laid no claim to publication. Discussing the difference in the micro- structure of the metallic matrix, Professor Howe pointed out that "such minor struc- tural differences are indeed to be expected, because of the difference in the conditions under which these constituents are generated. "One difference in these conditions is that the steel of most micrographs has been either forged or at least treated thermally in such a way as to give a new structure radically different from that which formed during the initial solidification, whereas the cast irons have not. The flame safety lamp with metal-gauze enclosure was invented by Sir Humphrey Davy more than a century ago, primarily for its safe light; however, it soon became the standard device for detecting the presence of methane in mine atmospheres. It still is the most widely used device for this purpose and is also the most practicable means of detecting deficiency of oxygen in coal mines. A permissible flame safety lamp is similar in all respects to one that, after a series of tests, has been approved by the Bureau of Mines as safe for use in gassy mines. However, safety depends largely upon the way lamps are maintained and used.

IT is the purpose of this paper to describe in detail the laboratory development and mill application of an unusual combination of flotation reagents employed in the concentrator of the Climax Molybdenum Co., on the Continental Divide, near Leadville, Lake County, Colorado. This development originated in an ore-dressing research laboratory maintained by Climax at the experimental plant of the Colorado School of Mines, which is staffed by men directly employed by the Climax Molybdenum Co. Mill-scale testing of laboratory developments was supervised by a representative from the testing laboratory, working in close cooperation with the operating staff at the mill. General milling practice at Climax is ably described in a paper by E. J. Duggan,1 mill superintendent. Other aspects of the Climax project have been described in papers by W. J. Coulter,2 by Butler, Vanderwilt and Henderson3 by Allen Kissock,4 and by Leo H. Glanville.5 Consequently, this paper will be confined to the metallurgical aspects of recent reagent developments, avoiding, as much as possible, repetition of material covered in these earlier publications. BRIEF HISTORY OF REAGENT PRACTICE AT CLIMAX Prior to the year 1937, the only reagents employed at Climax for froth production and collecting action in the flotation of molybdenite were steam-distilled or destructively distilled pine oils. The only exceptions to this practice were brief periods of mill testing, when reagents of various types were tried on an experimental basis. None of these experimental runs was sufficiently encouraging to justify its continuation as regular practice. Sodium, cyanide has been employed since the very early days of milling at Climax as an inhibiting agent for control of pyrite and chalcopyrite. Alkaline reagents such as lime or soda ash have been used in recent years to minimize the detrimental effect of iron salts on flotation of molybdenite. The presence of these harmful salts is attributed to the decomposition of fine metallics abraded from liners and balls in the first stage of regrinding rougher concentrate. Flint pebbles are used in subsequent regrinding, since alkaline reagents are not entirely adequate to offset the inhibiting effect of iron salts as the grind becomes progressively finer and the grade of concentrate progressively higher. Climax metallurgists were familiar at an early date with the use of petroleum products such as kerosene and gas oil as promoters of flotation of molybdenite. Charles C. Oliver6 discussed the use of pine oil and kerosene as early as 1920, in connection with the milling practice at Dominion Molybdenite Co., Quebec. Never theless, the early attempts to apply this knowledge in the Climax concentrator were complete failures.
