This report is the second of a series describing methods and systems of mechanical mining; where operations are conducted on more than one shift. The first report, Information Circular 7014,4/ describes mining operations at 14 mines and the present paper describes operations at 11 additional mines. The purpose of this study is to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the various types of equipment and mining systems now used where more than one shift is worked per day. Physical conditions vary in different and in the same mining districts and determine, together with economical considerations, the systems of mining and the types of mechanical loading equipment to be used. The information presented in this paper may be helpful to operators or others who may contemplate installing a mechanical mining system. The equipment used in the mines described comprises conveyors, scrapers, mobile loaders, mobile conveyors, and combination of these types. The description of the mining systems and practices at the mines investigated is detailed only as they relate to and affect mechanization. In computing the operating data in mines that are not totally mechanized, employees not working directly on production have been charged to output from mechanized sections in proportion to the percentage of mechanization. The operating data for comparing various systems are for an average working dry, as the number of men working on idle days varies greatly in different mines.

THE development of a cement that will resist the destructive action of sea water and other corrosive waters is a problem that has occupied cement chemists for the past one hundred years. It has been found that of the various salts that commonly occur in corrosive waters, sodium sulphate, magnesium sulphate and magnesium chloride are most destruc-tive to cement. Many investigations have been carried out in the United States, in Canada, and in Europe to solve the problem of what constitutes a sulphate-resistant cement, and during the past 10 years some of the findings give definite information in this respect. COMPOSITION OF CEMENT Portland cement is composed of four major compounds: 1. Tricalcium silicate 3CaO.Si02 (C3S) 2. Dicalcium silicate 2CaO.Si02 (C2S) 3. Tricalcium aluminate 3CaO.Al203 (C3A) 4. Tetracalcium aluminoferrite 4CaO.Al203.Fe203 (C4AF) The two calcium silicates are the main contributors of strength. The tricalcium aluminate contributes some to the early strength of the cement but has the least resistance of the four compounds toward the attack of sulphate waters. The tetracalcium aluminoferrite does not contribute very much to the strength, but is far more resistant to sulphate waters than the tricalcium aluminate. When hardened cement is exposed to water containing sodium or magnesium sulphates, these salts will react with the hydrated tricalcium aluminate in the cement and form compounds that will cause a swelling, disruption and crumbling of the hardened cement.

Magnetic torque studies of ferromagnetic single crystals have been carried out in a number of laboratories during the last decade&apos;s2 and some work has been reported on polycrystalline material showing preferred orientation. Goss3 used the method extensively in developing electrical sheet with desirable magnetic properties, but he used it as a control rather than as a means of studying the texture. Bozorth4 made a quantitative correlation of a torque curve he obtained from some cold-rolled iron with the texture as determined from X-rays, but did not extend his studies beyond the one specimen. Other studies, which have been reported from time to time2,5 have also been incomplete in the sense that no effort was made to study a whole series of samples, differing only in degree of cold reduction or in the annealing temperature, in order to ascertain the effect of such treatments on the texture as revealed by torque measurements. It is the purpose of this investigation to make such a study, mainly in order to see how useful the method can be made when used under favorable circumstances and to find what kind of a correlation can be expected between magnetic and X-ray studies of texture. Before proceeding further, it is desirable to say a little about single crystals, so as to make clear the concepts involved in magnetic torque measurements. Magnetic Torque Method It is fairly well known nowadays that single crystals of ferromagnetic substances have directions of easy magnetization and of hard magnetization. In Fig. 1 are reproduced typical magnetization curves for a single crystal of iron, which show that in a < 100 > direction saturation occurs at low fields compared to those required to saturate the same crystal in a <110> or a <111> direction. A HISTOR Y of the development and application of instruments, from the simplest U gauge to a modern indicating recording controller, would contain many interesting accounts of difficulties experienced and over-come. Important as is the history of development to any branch of science, this phase will, of necessity, have to be omitted from this paper and remarks confined to the results from the use of instruments in their present form. The steel industry bas, in the past decade, become increasingly instrument minded. More than ever, economy and adherence to doser specifications are demanded, and any tool that will aid in attaining these objectives by intelligent application and use finds a ready acceptance. The open-hearth furnace bas offered a field for instruments which is different from almost any other and one in which even a small percentage saved in operating costs may represent a considerable sum. Nevertheless, this department of the steel industry has been more cautions than most others in accepting the benefits which automatic control bas given on many other types of industrial furnaces, and one is puzzled why open hearths have not more generally benefited by the application of controlling instruments. The furnace operator bas to adjust the same three main valves that control fuel, combustion air, and stack draft as on most other furnaces, with the additional regulation of reversing the furnace. He is just as aware of the importance of proper draft control and correct air volume to burn most economically the applied fuel as any good boiler-plant engineer. What, then, are the special conditions that pertain to the open-hearth furnace?

SINCE 1925, when the preferred orientations in compressed aluminum were first determined1, 2 the orientations have been described as a fiber texture in which a face diagonal, [110], of the face-centered cubic lattice is parallel to the compression axis. Subsequent experiments have seemed to confirm this texture,3-5 and a number of theories (recently summarized in references 6 and 7) have been proposed to explain it and to relate it to the behavior of single crystals during compression. 3,8-11 The experiments reported in this paper prove that the orientations are not adequately described as quoted above-i.e., as a [110] fiber texture-although this is a first approximation to the actual texture. They also show that the texture cannot be thought of as a stable orienta-tion that is reached and maintained after a sufficient amount of deforma-tion. The actual texture, when studied in detail at successive stages of compression, indicates that a hitherto unsuspected range of orientations is present, both in the polycrystalline metal as a whole and in various individual grains in its interior, and that a state of dynamic equilibrium exists within this range. The reasons for the failure of previous theories to predict the actual texture become obvious when the heterogeneous nature of the flow is considered. In addition to the deformation texture, the manner of its develop-ment, and its theory, this paper presents data on the following related subjects: the identity of strain markings in aluminum; the orientation changes in aluminum single crystals during compression and a com-parison of these with the conditions in individual grains of a polycrystal-line specimen; the origin of asterism in deformed single crystals, which heretofore has been regarded as a distortion localized at the surfaces of slip planes; and the relation of plastic strain in individual grains in an aggregate to the strain of the whole.

The point to be made most clear in this paper is the economic value of flotation in the Benguet mill flow sheet. It is rather a statement of effect with no attempt at a technical explanation of the cause. Certain well-known, easily understood reagents, mechanisms and principles have been adapted to the conditions at Benguet, and have proved to be more successful than was demonstrated in the laboratory. The mechanical and metallurgical development of this particular operation was arrived at by trial and error, with fortunately very little error. Changes were slow, of necessity, which in the end proved a blessing in that time was afforded for observation and analysis of the disturbing factors; and as a result each change was a definite step towards higher efficiency. Many of these steps were unpredictable from laboratory work because of the varied and differing characteristics of ores met with in daily operation of the mill, which were practically impossible to reproduce on a laboratory scale. The Benguet mill receives daily ores that differ as much as if they were delivered from three different properties. There is first the surface and upper-level zone, which produces an oxidized secondary ore containing considerable iron oxide, manganese oxide and some organic matter. Formerly, most of this ore consisted of very soft fill with some hard rock mixed in. It also contained an unusual amount of iron and aluminum sulfate, which formed hydrates upon entering the alkaline cyanide solution and caused excessive frothing. When flotation was introduced in the Benguet mill the general characteristics of this upper-level ore had changed considerably, in that it was practically all newly mined, fairly hard ore. It still contained many of the same disturbing elements, but was somewhat simpler to treat than formerly. The small proportion of fines is still troublesome in flotation, and plant practice probably does not show more than 80 per cent extraction on this small portion of the ore. No definite figure on this is available, as this particular ore is delivered at irregular intervals

FOR several years, the rock-burst question has been given serious consideration by the operating staff at Wright-Hargreaves mine and, as a result of observations and experiences, several different methods of mining have been developed which are now in use in various parts of the mine. These are described in the following pages. It should be emphasized, how-ever, that these methods, and the views expressed in this paper, are based solely on conditions at Wright-Hargreaves mine. Such conditions may or may not be similar to those obtaining in other mines in the Kirkland Lake area, where ore occurrences, veins, wall-rock, faulting, intrusives, etc., may be entirely different. Size and shape of ore-bodies, composition of the ore-bodies and their surrounding rocks, locations of intrusives and sedimentary rocks, and direction, dip, and strength of faults, all introduce problems that are peculiar to each individual mine. Ground failure&apos; in coal and metal mines is not at all unusual. A variety of systems of mining have been developed to delay movement of large or small blocks of ground, or, in some instances, to take advantage of the fact that ground movement, due to mining operations, is unavoidable. Ground failure may be either slow collapse or it may take place with explosive violence. It is principally with the latter condition that we are concerned in the mines of the Kirkland Lake district.

As mines grow deeper, the problem of ground control becomes one of increasing importance. The literature on the subject has grown extensively in the past few years, but is still far from conclusive. Detailed and precise observations are on record covering most phases of the problem, and control measures have progressed to the point where, in a large measure, they are effective. The success of methods to date must be attributed to the efforts which have been exerted to reduce convergence of stope walls and to the realization that a regular progression of stope faces approaching longwall has a beneficial effect. This paper attempts to explain the relationship between these two factors and the general problem of ground control. The problem at present lacks the co-ordination of the practical with the scientific outlook, but fortunately as time goes on there are indications that our scientific friends are becoming more interested and more familiar with the practical issues involved. Opinions vary widely regarding the mechanism of the problem and there are several schools of thought, two only of which will be discussed. One associates the incidence of rock-bursts with the stresses built up by a sagging hanging-wall, while the other takes the view that stresses primarily responsible for the sagging hanging-wall are also the cause of rock-bursts. The first group starts its reasoning from the convergence of the walls, probably the most conspicuous feature of deep mining, and works back to the conclusion that rock-bursts are in sorne way due to the breaking up of the sagging layers. The second group begins with the stress zone apparent around excavations at depth and follows mathematical conceptions based on certain assumptions which, in the absolute sense, are known to be inaccurate, but which are justified by the similarity between the conclusions reached and the results obtained in practice. This reasoning is followed to the point where rock-bursts result from the failure, under stress, of rock in situ, quite independent of wall convergence.

The Bureau of Mines midget impinger dust-sampling apparatus was described first in 1937.4/ Two supplementary reports5/6 were published in 1938. These reports are now out of print. The material published previously is combined in this paper to make information on this device available for distribution. The impinger was developed by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the United States Public Health Service in 1922. The underlying principle of this instruments is based on impingement land wetting, of the dust particles by drawing air through a nozzle at high velocity onto a smooth surface under a bubbling column of liquid. The dust particles are retained in the liquid. The apparatus has been used widely and permissible limits of dustiness have teen established in the United States on the basis of results obtained with this device in correlation with medical studies. However, it has been criticized for its bulk, weight, and power requirements.

Although an aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph provided some form of radial-line method is used to determine the true position of images. The slotted- templet method, which is based on the well-established radial-line principle, has made it possible to construct accurate mosaic maps at a cost comparable with that formerly charged for the average mosaic. It makes possible the securing of these results with far less ground control, which is always expensive. It has expanded widely the possible use of aerial photographs for mapping. ALTHOUGH a vertical or oblique aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph. Some ground controls or data are needed, the number and accuracy to be governed by the mapping method to be used and the scale and final accuracy desired in the finished map. RADIAL-LINE CONTROL It is essential that the principle of radial-line control in the use of vertical aerial photographs be understood and accepted before any confidence in the slotted-templet method can be gained. A simple sketch and some enlargements showing the Empire State Building will serve to illustrate the cause of displacement of an image that is above the datum plane as recorded in the photograph. The top of the tower of the Empire State Building is directly above the base, and when the image of the top is shown almost two blocks away from the center of the base, it is evident that the image of the top of the tower is not the true location, and in this particular case we know where the true location is; namely, over the center of the base of the tower. If the top of the tower were the top of a hill 1250 ft. high, we would have no way of knowing by inspection the true position of the top of the hill, so it is very important to have a method whereby the true location of any such point can be determined, and thereby make it possible to convert the detail of an aerial photograph into accurate information for mapmaking.

The spontaneous combustion of coal lies at the bottom of the subject of storage. It is useless to store coal that is to be lost by fire from spontaneous combustion. Every engineer is familiar with the phenomena of the self-heating of coal, yet, for all that, spontaneous combustion is relatively rare. If we counted the times a portion of cod was stored where it would be undisturbed for a few weeks, the number of such storage operations in any one year would mount into the millions. Of these, a relatively small number show the phenomena of spontaneous combustion and time risk per ton is very small. It is extremely rare that in the smaller operations involving; only a few tons there is any heating. There is no spontaneous combustion of anthracite, and very rarely does the domestic consumer of bituminous coal find troublesome heating. The main interest in the subject lies in the large piles needed as reserves for public-service utilities, and the industries. Everyone desires to have directions for storage that are perfectly simple and yet will insure against loss. Unfortunately, the problem is too complicated for a simple solution. In spite of this ;;renter use, very little consideration has been given to the hazard that might be occasioned by the toxic vapors of mercury unavoidably spilled&apos; of otherwise exposed to the atmosphere during the normal procedure of laboratory open at ions. A simple visual examination ).&apos;.&apos; son-,, r° the laboratories reveal the presence of a considerable quantity of mercury in the cracks of floors, on work tables, and on ark, around equipment stands. Usually this mercury is contaminated with oil3/ and dirt so that it remaining in a finely divided state and a ;mall amount pre presents a relatively large surface for evaporation. During the past several years, alunite from the Marysvale (Utah) region has been the subject of investigation by the Electrometallurgical Section of the Bureau of Mines. The nature and occurrence of this mineral, with considerable data on the Utah deposits, together with a number of results of preliminary experiments, have been given in a previous report.6/ The geology of the Marysvale region has been reviewed recently.7/ The present paper reports the results obtained by a method involving the sintering of alunite with boric acid and subsequent treatment of the sinter to produce alumina and potassium sulphate.

IT has been shown1 that in the absence of heavy metal salts, the nature of the alkali used to promote differential flotation-whether caustic soda, lime or sodium carbonate-is unimportant. The hydroxyl ion is the active depressant upon which differentiation depends, and the pH value determines whether a film of collector forms on any given mineral surface. Even when sodium cyanide is used in conjunction with alkalies, it is the pH value and not the nature of the alkali or its concentration that is important, for upon the pH value alone depends the fraction of the added sodium cyanide that is present as cyanide ion, which is the true depressant. When heavy metal salts become dissolved from partly oxidized ores, or are added intentionally as activators, conditions are different, and metallurgists have found that lime and sodium carbonate do not give identical results, even when added in amounts sufficient to produce the same pH value. In the few instances in which we had attempted to confirm this view, we had failed to do so, for, with nothing to guide us, we had inadvertently chosen solutions that gave contact curves of a "stand-ard type," which correspond to conditions of ready floatability. Now, however, we find that, in the presence of copper salts, and within a restricted range of reagent concentrations, the nature of the anions present is important, and that sodium carbonate does influence the results, apart from the usual effect due to its influence on pH value. With the recognition of this anion effect, and with the control of temperature already introduced,&apos; it appears that the factors of major importance in connection with this set of reagents have been taken into consideration, and that the results obtained and the conclusions drawn from contact tests will be of more immediate value to the operator.

DIATOMS are microscopic aquatic plants of the order Bacillariaceae. They are unicellular plants with skeletons made up of amorphous opaline silica. The skeletons show highly ornate, complicated geometrical designs. Diatoms live in water virtually everywhere. They are found in clean sea water, brackish water, and fresh-water lakes and ponds. When conditions are right, diatoms propagate by subdivision in huge numbers. Alkalinity, temperature, and the presence of high concentrations of silica in the water largely control diatom life. When the diatoms die the skeletons drop to the bottom of their habitat to form oozes of vary-ing thicknesses. DIATOMITES Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth, is composed essentially of the siliceous remains of the diatoms, although other organic skeletons are also present, especially in sea-water deposits where radiolaria, sponges and silico-flagellates are common. Impurities are generally carbonaceous material, fine-grained silt, volcanic ash and dust, and occasional coarse grains of sand. Diatomites are marine, brackish, or fresh-water, depending upon types of diatoms and their method of deposition.

The year 1938, with a production of 58,784,250 bbl. from 18,790 wells shows a slight recession from the high peak of oil production reached the previous year, when slightly over 68 million barrels of oil was marketed. The previous high peak had been reached in 1917 with a total of 45,451,000 bbl. Another still earlier peak was reached in 1904, during which year slightly less than 5 million barrels was produced and sold. The production of gas, on the other hand, probably reached a new peak during 1938 with a total of over 60 billion cubic feet. This peak, however, was not the highest peak, for during the year 1908 over 80 billion cubic feet was produced. Between these two high peaks the production dropped down to 16 billion cubic feet in the year 1921. The number of wells drilled during the year totals 1569. This figure is somewhat lower than the figure given in several trade journals because it does not include wells that were deepened or recompleted in a different geological horizon. Nearly three-fourths (or 1107) of the total number of wells were completed as commercial oil wells (915 in western and 192 wells in eastern Kansas). The commercial gas wells completed number 50, of which 4 are in eastern Kansas and 46 in western Kansas. The remaining 412 completions include 130 dry holes in eastern and 282 dry holes in western Kansas. Based on daily potential capacity, the new discoveries of the year accounted for 70,000 bbl. of new oil for eastern and 1,220,000 bbl. of new oil for western Kansas. It is interesting to note in this connection that the number of wells completed in the state rose gradualIy to a first peak in 1904, when 2782 were drilled. The number dropped off rapidly to 368 three years later, but rose to the second and highest peak in 1918 when 4671 wells were completed. In the period between 1904 and 1912 more gas wells than oil wells were completed. Between the high peak of 1918 and the somewhat lower peak in 1937, the low point was reached during 1931, with the completion of only 470 wells. THE Cornucopia gold quartz veins form a parallel vein system traversing meta-morphic and granodioritic rocks. Field and petrographic evidence suggests that metasomatism has played an important role both in the emplacement of the grano-diorite and in the formation of the veins. Structurally the veins appear to be related to the major tectonic features of the Wallowa Mountains and to be narrow shear zones rather than filled fissures. Petrographic studies indicate a complex history of formation starting from initial alteration along fractures or joints followed by recurrent fracturing and a quartz-forming stage,-and closing with continued shearing and microbrecciation, which permitted the upward percolation of the later ore-forming solutions. The precipitation of ore minerals from these solutions formed ore shoots. Postmineral effects include the injection of Tertiary basaltic dikes, a slight amount of cross faulting, and some movement along the planes of the veins as well as oxidation. INTRODUCTION Cornucopia is in the southeastern part of the rugged Wallowa Moun-tains of northeastern Oregon. It was founded over 50 years ago following the discovery of its system of gold quartz veins. The major veins are roughly parallel and dip into the western side of Pine Valley, which drains the southern slope of the range. Previous operations had cut the upper portion of four major veins with two tunnels over 1000 ft. apart, when the present operating company drove a third tunnel, called the Coulter, at the level of the valley over 1000 ft. lower to intersect the most easterly major vein at over 6200 ft. from the portal.
