This paper deals primarily with the advantages realized from the adoption of methods more suitable than those previously used. The improvements noted include: (1) modification of practice in shrinkage stoping, (2) use of sublevel caving over grizzlies, (3) improved haulage and loading, (4) use of contract wages wherever possible. The Washington mine is on Jonestown Hill, one mile south of Oxford, in northwestern New Jersey. It is producing 16,000 tons of concentrates a month, which are being shipped to the Alan Wood Steel Company's furnaces at Swedeland, Pennsylvania. History The first settlement in this region is reported to have been in 1735, and the magnetite ores were recognized immediately. The first furnace, built in 1741, began operation in 1743. During the Revolutionary War the output was chiefly used for making cannon balls, which, owing to the sympathies of the community, without doubt found their way into the hands of the British. This old furnace is still standing. Several important veins were soon developed, including the Martin, Strayley, McKinley, Adelaide, Welsh and Lanning. Mining was carried to a depth corresponding to the capacity of the pumps available. When these became inadequate, the workings were abandoned, and another vein was opened up. The Washington vein was probably discovered about 1850, and the first shaft started in 1854. In 1879, William H. Scranton made the first complete magnetic survey of the district and serious exploration of the deposit was begun. Rather indifferent success attended the earlier efforts of the many companies that attempted to mine and smelt the ore. In 1929 the property was leased by the Warren Foundry and Pipe Co. to the present operators, and the modification of practice then inaugurated is described in this paper. Geology These veins, like most eastern deposits of magnetite, are formed from, or are contemporaneous with, pegmatite intrusions into a gneissic country rock. Before the various States began to enact workman's compensation laws accidents were considered inherent in many industries, and little or no effort was made to prevent or reduce them. The hazard was accepted by the employee with the job, and the avoidance of accidents by mental alertness or physical agility was largely his responsibility. After the employee had given evidence of enough skill inn performing his allotted task efficiently the responsibility of the employer apparently ceased with respect to the personal safety of the employee. However, following the enactment of workmen's compensation laws, at least two facts that had not before been fully appreciated soon became apparent: (1) The majority of accidents can be prevented if the management firmly determines to prevent them; (2) frog a monetary point of view alone accidents are decidedly expensive, both to employer and to employee. It is now evident that savings effected by conscientious safety effort add substantially to net profits of operation.

During the 5-year period 1906-10 inclusive, 84 major disasters (a major disaster being one in which 5 or more lives are lost) occurred in the coal mines of the United States, or an average of 17 per year, and the total number of fatalities from coal-mine gas and dust explosions (major plus minor) for the 5 years aggregated 2,338 or 477.6 per year. The monotonous continuance of coal-mine disasters month by month aroused the people of the United States to such an extent that it was felt necessary for the Federal Government to try to do something looking to the avoidance of the admittedly excessive loss of life in our coal mines, and this was one of the deciding factors in the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mires in 1910. That results have been obtained in this particular cause of coal-mine accidents may be seen from the fact that for the year 1933 but one major explosion disaster occurred in the coal mines of then united States and the total number killed in that disaster was 7. Unquestionably the coal-mining industry through use of oaf or mining practices and aided by the various kinds of work of the Bureau of Mines looking to the prevention of mine fires and explosions is in large part responsible for this very creditable change. If the gas and dust explosion fatality rate of 1.059 per million tons of coal produced during the period 1906-10 inclusive had continued to the first of January 1934, instead of the 6,373 deaths which actually occurred due to gas and dust explosions, there would have been 13,480. Hence, during the 23 years existence of the Bureau of Mines there has apparently been a saving of about 7,102 probable deaths, or an average of more than 300 per year, from gas and dust explosions as against the number which would have occurred had the 1.059 gas and dust explosion fatality rate for the period 1906-10 continued. Thirty-nine persons were killed in all kinds of explosions (both major and minor) in the coal mines of the United States in 1933; if the 1.059 gas and dust fatality rate of the 1900-10 period had been in effect in 1933, about 400 persons world have been killed. Unquestionably, the various teachings of the U.S. Bureau of Mines looking to the avoidance of explosions and fires in mines have had a vital influence in reducing the number of explosions and fires and also in decreasing their destruction in case they occur.

Early in my term of office it was announced that my Presidential Address would make particular reference to the subject of Mine Taxation in Canada. With this purpose in view there was drafted a Balance Sheet and Earnings' Statement of a Gold Mining Company. This in turn was submitted to the Dominion Income Tax Authorities in Ottawa and to the Minister of. Mines of each of the several Provinces of Canada. The response to the invitation was not as complete as we had hoped it would be, but the figures that were obtained will be presented during the present meeting, and they constitute, I hope, a sufficient basis for extended study and additional enquiry during the year to come ( 1) . In the form letter that accompanied our request to have the submitted earnings assessed, I made the following assertion: "In this work we have three objects in mind. 1.--We will get direct comparison between the different Provinces in Canada. 2.-We will in this way educate our members concerning taxation as it affects the mining industry. 3.-We will publish the details as to how the assessment is calculated by each body, so that a Mine Manager in the most remote district will have a ready reference to guide him in his annual return to the taxing bodies. As things stand, there is no intention of making this a basis for a critical attack on the present rates assessed. It is intended as an authoritative summary of actual conditions as they presently exist".

The major development in stabilization of the oil industry during 1933 was the transition in the United States from state control to federal control in many of the functions that government is presumed to exercise. A brief review of the influences leading to that transition is given here to suggest its significance and to assist in forecasting its further development. Bitumens were known to the ancients and have been applied to minor uses since earliest historic times, but it was not until after the discovery of oil in considerable quantities near Titusville, Pennsylvania, in 1859 that it was made the basis of extensive commercial undertakings. In 1859 little was known about the origin of oil and gas, the nature of these deposits, and the physical laws that controlled their accumulation. Scientists soon began to study them, but 50 years or more of active oil-field development had elapsed before sufficient geological information had been accumulated to point the way toward efficient recovery of these products. In fact, only within the past five years has the function of reservoir energy become widely understood, yet it is a primary factor in oil recovery. discovery near Titusville, this infant industry has developed into an industrial giant. In complete ignorance of their destructive effect, wasteful development methods were initiated in Oil Creek and these became industrial habits. These habits in turn became oil and gas law. Under that law vast sums of money have been expended, rights have become vested and development methods fastened on a great industry that not only bring upon it periodic demoralization but cause ruthless destruction of the nation's reserves of these important natural resources. This is occurring in the midst of a petroleum era when oil is essential to the nation's security, its industrial supremacy, and the personal convenience of every citizen. Its conservation, therefore, has become a question of grave national concern. WHEN Mr. Cameron, the President of the Santa Cruz Portland Cement Co., returned from Europe in 1929, he brought first-hand infor-mation about a very versatile type of hydraulic cement. It was not a new cement, many articles having been written about it in foreign journals, but in this country the record of this type of cement had been either neglected or minimized. Using local materials, and applying the information brought back by Mr. Cameron together with many data in numerous publications, the Santa Cruz Portland Cement Co. developed the Santa Cruz high-silica cement. This cement is manufactured by grinding with portland cement clinker a properly calcined mixture of siliceous material and lime. It has all the utility of portland cement, together with an increased resistance to the destructive action of many aggressive solutions. To explain the necessity for the development of a cement having these characteristics, the history of hydraulic binding materials may be reviewed briefly. The materials used as binding media by primitive people were mud, lime, gypsum and bitumin. Due to its utility, ease of preparation, and its common occurrence, lime was the most widely used. Fat lime, when used by itself or with an inert sand, hardened only on the outside surface, where the carbonate was formed by absorption of carbon dioxide from the air, while, the interior of the mortar remained soft. It was quite early discovered that the incorporation of proper siliceous material with the lime increased its ability to harden, and for this purpose various natural siliceous powders were used, such as puzzo-lana in Italy, trass in what is now Germany, and santorin in Greece. These powders reacted with the lime forming a permanent cement and rendered unnecessary the access of carbon dioxide to the mortar.

Considerable attention has of late been given to the blasting of large amounts of ore in one operation, on account of the saving in labour and explosives and consequent low cost per ton, and also on account of the additional safety to employees. The blast here described, at the Hidden Creek mine. at Anyox, B.C., is not necessarily unique either in size or methods employed, but some interesting p10blems were encountered and the solutions of these may be of interest to others engaged in similar work. The ore consisted mainly of old scope-bottoms and sill pillars, although there also were some braces and parts of vertical pillars included. Some of the stope-bottoms were overlain by caved waste, and one of the problems was to break them in such a manner that the maximum amount of ore could be recovered without serious dilution with waste. The ore blocks, designated as the 385 silt and the 7 A-103 blocks, were under preparation for blasting for over a year, as conditions permitted. This work consisted in drilling long machine drill holes, varying in length from 14 to 20 feet. These holes were drilled with the Numa detachable bit, made locally, starting at 2~-inch diameter and bottoming at 2 inches for the longest length. The long hole drilling was used in the thinner sections of the area. For the stronger, thicker portions, powder drifts (3 ft. by 4 ft. in section) were driven for the powder charges. Reference to the plan and sections (Figures 2 co 8 inclusive) show the relative location of these, as well as the long drilling. The amount of explosives used in the powder drift charges averaged 0.25 pounds per ton of estimated burden, varying from 0.2 to 0.3 pounds per ton.

Unit coal calorific values represent a close approach to pure coal values; they possess characteristics theoretically inherent in the latter values. They are essentially uniform in the same seam for areas possessing essentially uniform geological environment. They are higher in older than in younger coals in most cases, and in deeper than in shallower coals. In general, they display characteristics closely in accordance with expectation assuming that they are essentially indices of rank. Because it possesses these characteristics, the unit coal value is essentially a standard value, characteristic of each bed in each local region. Hence it can be used as a basis for determining the accuracy of results in newly established laboratories, or when new equipment is installed, or in checking the results of different laboratories, or even in determining the character of coal as mined or prepared if ash, moisture and sulfur values are known. DISCUSSION (A. C. Callen presiding) R. P. Hunson,§ Wayland, Ky. (written discussion).—One of the interesting observatioris made by the authors is that there is a more or less definite correlation between unit coal calorific values and the geological environment of the coal bed. It is very interesting to note that, in general, the unit B.t.u. value increases with the increase in the probable original depth of burial, and that each seam tends to increase in calorific value toward the areas of diastrophic instability. It is generally conceded that Parr's formula, for determining unit coal values, is about as accurate as any formula subsequently proposed for the same purpose. In his formula, Professor Parr did not differentiate between the sulfur present as iron pyrites and that present as organic sulfur. However, the practical application of the formula has shown that this is of little consequence. I agree with the authors that unit coal calorific values are useful ill determining the accuracy of calorimetric determinations, and in determining the character of the

IN an earlier paper, Ehrenburg and Watson1 published the develop-ment for a potential function by which it is possible to obtain the electric potential at points on the surface of the ground when a current I passes between two electrodes and the subsoil is composed of parallel, homo-geneous layers. In view of the continued interest in the resistivity method of electrical prospecting, the author has considered it desirable to publish the results of a number of theoretical studies making use of this potential function, and also the results of a considerable number of tests with models designed to show the soundness of the mathematical theory. It is hoped that these results will prove how erroneous the various empirical rules for depth determination may be. It has always seemed puzzling to the author that one can find, in papers published comparatively recently, statements upholding empirical rules for depth determination, and attributing most of the irregularities of resistivity curves to vertical discontinuities in resistivity in the subsoil. It would indeed be fortunate for the geophysical investigator if such a simple rule held. However, numerous investigators have proved both theoretically and by the success of their field work that such a rule does not hold, even by a" rough approximation" in many cases. On the other hand, as is shown in the development to follow; if the underground conditions are favorable it is possible for such empirical rules to give a satisfactory depth determination. Authors should be more careful about making such sweeping state-ments about the accuracy of these empirical rules because the relative simplicity of the field work places the method in the hands of any inter-ested experimenter, and he is likely to become completely disgusted with the method after he has made several obviously wrong interpretations by empirical rules.

The Zwolle oil field of Sabine Parish, La., is different from most oil producing areas of the State in that the oil is obtained from marl and chalkrock formations. The thickness of the reservoir rocks averages 500 feet; but production is not continuous throughout this thickness, as the oil apparently is localized in vertical and nearly vertical solution cavities and channelways or in porous zones of limited horizontal extent. The nature of the oil accumulation has caused two outstanding peculiarities of the field: (1) About 60 percent of the tests drilled were dry holes and (2) there were many instances of well interference. Commercial production was discovered in November 1928, after 17 years of prospecting in and around the present limits of the area now developed which has a length of about 22 miles and a maximum width of 4 miles. The field had produced 10,266,896 barrels of oil to January 1, 1934. The oil ranges in gravity from 400 to 420 A.P.I.

Introduction As practised during the last two years at the Vipond Consolidated gold mine, mining geology has meant the application of geology to the problem of finding, developing, and mining ore. This article reviews the results attained in Vipond mining geology as thus defined. Most effort was directed toward clarifying and interpreting the tangible physical causes of vein and ore localizations, and in the following pages these questions are dealt with in considerable detail. Discernment of the influence of rock folding and deformation on the localization of veins, and of the influence of certain structures and rocks in or near carbonaceous zones on the localization of ore-bodies, have been the main practical results of the studies. Consideration of some of the geological features of the Porcupine area, and of the geology and mining experience of the principal producing mines, has helped toward a perspective of Vipond's ore-finding problems. These features are first discussed. The background and procedure for Vipond mining geology, and the major results of the geological mapping, are then summarized. Then follows a résumé of tangible factors that influenced vein, ore-body, and gold localizations; and, next, explanations of the facts ascertained. Because they were found of little utility, many fascinating problems, such as the origin and mode of emplacement of the veins and lodes(l), the ultimate source of the ore, and the physico-chemical and mechanical agencies affecting vein and ore formation, are treated cursorily or are neglected in these notes.

Introduction The property of Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Limited is situated at the northeastern end of Kirkland lake, Ontario. It lies immediately east of the Lake Shore mine, and about in the centre of the Kirkland Lake camp. The district is served by the Swastika-Rouyn branch of the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario railway, the town of Kirkland Lake being four miles northeast of Swastika, which is 63 miles north of Cobalt and 392 miles north of Toronto. The mine is developed by three shafts and has more than twenty-eight miles of underground workings. There are two main producing veins, which lie in a porphyry boss 1,350 feet wide. Milling started in May, 1921, and to-date (January, 1933) the mine has produced gold to the value of $21,770,183. Present production is at the rate of 800 tons of ore per day. For a description of the geology, reference may be made to the report by E. W. Todd on the Kirkland Lake Gold Area (1). Structure and Ore Deposits The two major productive veins on the Wright-Hargreaves property are known as the North vein and the South vein. In the vicinity of the shafts these veins are approximately 550 feet apart. A third vein, known as the Inclined vein, has been worked from its junction with the South vein at the 2,000-foot level to its intersection with the North vein at the 800-foot level. This inclined vein has to date been found only in the area east of the eastern major north-south fault. The main North vein and South vein have a general vertical dip, although local rolls and post-ore faults throw certain sections out of line. From the surface to 3,900 feet, the North vein is displaced south less than 200 feet, and the South vein at the same horizon is almost perpendicularly beneath the surface showings.

The recent establishment of an official price of 64.64 cents per ounce for silver by the President's order of December 21, 1933, has provoked discussion as to the effects of this move on the various metal-mining industries. To assist those of the mineral industry who are interested in this problem, the Bureau of Mines presents the following analysis of basic statistical data concerning; the relation of the silver price to the value of copper ores mined in the United States. The term "copper ore" as used herein includes all ores in which copper is the most abundant base metal paid for. In 1928, this class of ore contributed 98 percent of the total copper output of the United States.

Meerschaum or sepiolite is employed principally in tobacco pipes and cigar and cigarette holders, although a few other uses of minor importance are Down. The unique value of a meerschaum pipe is derived from the owner's pleasure in watching the color deepen with smoking and in having the color "set" at the desired shade. The name "meerschaum" (German for "sea foam") is applied because the material, when pure and dry, will float on water. Owing to its resemblance to the porous, bonelike structure of the cuttlefish, or septa, it is also known as sepiolite. There are a few scattered deposits of meerschaum in. the United States which have yielded a small product ion, but the world's supply of the' material is obtained fined principally from Asia Minor, Meerschaum deposits near Eski-Shehir, Turkey, are said to have been worked 2,000 years ago, but commercial exploitation is a development of the last hundred years DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES Meerschaum is a hydrous magnesium silicate (H4Mg2Si3010) having the following theoretical analysis: Si02, 60.8 percent; MgO, 27.1 percent; H20, 12.1 percent. It is a soft. (H.2 - 2.5), fine-grained, earthy, white, gray, or yellow material. It is very light weight when pure (specific gravity, 1 to 2) and is highly absorbent. Because of its porosity the proportion of water present in the mineral is affected by the humidity'of the atmosphere. In a moist atmosphere the water content may be as much as 21.7 percent. Then wet the material is soft and somewhat plastic. When dried again it becomes lard and tough. The toughness is especially apparent in some forms that have a fibrous or leathery texture.

Analysis of the helium content of a natural gas presents more than the usual difficulties encountered in applying the thermal-conductivity method because of the relatively small amounts of this inert as present and the wide variation in the other constituents. However, the numerous advantages of this method and its adaptability to Continuously recording and control instruments make it worthy of consideration. A specific application of the method described yields quantitative results only when used with gas mixtures of known qualitative compositions which Vary within predetermined limits. Periodic analyses for the helium content of a producing gas well may be conveniently made by an absorption method, and a continuums analytical method is not necessary for this purpose. Natural gas containing 1.75 to 1.90 percent of helium produced from Government-owned wells is processed in the Amarillo (Texas) Helium Plant of the Bureau of lanes. The helium extracted in the plant is supplied to the Army and Navy, and the processed natural gas is sold to a commercial gas company. As complete recovery of the helium in the raw material is not economically practicable, the processed gas contains 0.1 to 0.3 percent of helium, depending upon conditions of operation. Production is checked against the helium removed from the gas, which before the installation of the thermal-conductivity apparatus was calculated from the analysis of a cumulative sample of the processed gas. As conditions of operation affect the residual helium content to a large extent, a composite sample was an uncertain index of the efficiency of the process.

This Information Circular is an abstract of a manuscript which was completed in June 1933, by Mr. Hugh M. Wolflin, formerly of the U. S. Bur eau of Mines. This abstract has been prepared by Charles Will Wright for presentation at the February meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in New York. It has been necessary to omit many of the details and most of the cost data and tables, as well as the illustrations in the original manuscript. As the use of airplanes in mining developments is making such progress and as a publication on this subject to be of greatest value should include the most recent information, it is unfortunate that, due to a lack of printing funds, it has not been possible to publish this manuscript. The purposes of Mr. Wolflin's paper are: (1) To describe briefly what has been accomplished in some outstanding examples by the use of aircraft in the mining and petroleum industries, (2) To record costs, (3) To present available information and suggestions to assist in solving future air-transportation problems in the industries under consideration.

Introduction During the economic investigation of Pacific Great Eastern Railway subsidy lands, the P.G.E. Survey of Resources made a geological and mineral survey of a large part of the valley of the Peace river as included in the Province of British Columbia. The immediate valley of the Peace river was surveyed from the mountains to the Alberta boundary; the valley of the Pine river was surveyed throughout; and the Dominion block, 70 miles square and lying astride the Peace river, westward from the Alberta boundary, was very carefully surveyed. The writer was in general charge of the field work, and spent half the field season of 1929 and the field season of 1930 in the region . J. B. Bocock, however, did the major part of the work, spending two seasons, 1929 and 1930, in the area. General Conclusions The rock formations within the area discussed are all sedimentary and range in age from pre-Cambrian to recent. As might be expected, the minerals are in the main non-metallic, coal being by far the most important. Favourable conditions exist for natural gas occurrence, and suitable structures for petroleum concentration occur, although the high carbon ratio of the coals sheds considerable doubt upon the actual occurrence of oil in the area. Materials of minor interest are ochre, calcareous tufa, marl, limonite, gravel, and building stone.

In the course of a recent investigation1 to develop a more satisfactory white-metal bearing alloy, a number of alloy systems were studied. The cadmium-nickel system showed characteristics desirable in a bearing alloy, and the system was therefore studied in some detail. Experimental Method Alloying cadmium with nickel offered no serious difficulty. After melting the cadmium, clean sheet nickel was added while the temperature was maintained at 500" to 600" C. A few crystals of ammonium chloride2 served to clean the nickel when the latter did not "wet" readily. In preparing the individual alloys for thermal and microscopic investigation, a "hardener" containing about 10 per cent nickel was used. Thermal Experiments and Apparatus Time-temperature cooling curves were made by standard methods. Globe electrolytic cadmium was added to the hardener to make a melt of the desired composition weighing between 100 and 200 grams. This charge was placed in a Pyrex test tube, 1 by 10 in., closed with a rubber stopper carrying a thermocouple sheath and quartz stirring rod. The assembly was lowered to a depth of about 4½ in. into an electric resistance pot furnace containing a No. 0000 clay-graphite crucible (to catch the melt in case of a break in the test tube). After the tube was clamped in this position, an asbestos-magnesia mixture was loosely packed in the furnace around the tube and a "halved" cover of transite placed on top. This left at least 5 in. of the test tube protruding from the furnace. When the alloy had melted, the thermocouple was adjusted so that the hot junction was l! in. from the bottom of the test tube. The melt was stirred thoroughly for several minutes to insure composition homogeneity and absence of thermal gradients.

Introduction The pages that follow present a brief chronological survey of views which have been held, and of legislation enacted, for the regulation of the natural gas and oil industry in the Turner Valley field, especially as regards conservation of the natural gas. To provide a necessary background for an adequate understanding of the progress of events in western Canada, there is included also a compilation, from technical and legal authorities, of some of the more important measures which have been adopted for the regulation of the oil and gas fields of the United States, where these measures have had, or are likely to have, a bearing on the course of our domestic industry. Owing to exigencies of space, it has been possible to refer only to the most outstanding proposals and legislation, and to these in the briefest possible form. Although, so far as Canada is concerned, the data presented are restricted almost entirely to the Turner Valley field, it is the hope of the writer that the paper may prove of value for purposes of reference: for any similar gas and oil fields discovered in western Canada will certainly revive and intensify the problem of the proper steps to be taken for the conservation of the gas. Definition of 'Conservation The term conservation has been so misunderstood and misrepresented that, to many persons in Alberta, it means little more than closing-in wells. In the light of the definition of Charles E. Hughes, that 'True conservation of a raw material is its economical use', the subject of natural gas conservation is inseparably involved with the study of the function of the -gas and with the development of the principles of unit operation.
