MANY excellent papers, descriptive of the milling and smelting of every kind of commercial ores, the refining of virgin metals, the casting into various shapes demanded by the trade, the rolling into shapes best suited to the factory machinery and the making of composition alloys to suit every requirement have been issued by the many technical societies dealing with non-ferrous metals. It is a wonderful collection of papers, of which the mining and metallurgical engineers may well be proud, but strange as it may seem, metallurgists in general appear to take the stand that when they have delivered suitable alloys to the foundry and rolled products to the factory their duty to write papers has ceased, at least in so far as the A. I. M. E. is concerned. Still we read in the daily papers that the mining companies are absorbing metal-manufacturing industries. The purpose of this paper is to describe the reclaiming of non-ferrous scrap metals at manufacturing plants, taking as an example the automobile industry.

The heats of combustion of fuels are determined in the laboratory by means of a calorimeter, usually of the oxygen bomb type. A known weight of the fuel is burned in an atmosphere of oxygen under approximately 400 pounds pressure in a heavy metal container-the bomb- and the heat evolved is imparted to a definite quantity of water. From the rise in temperature, measured by means of a Beckmann thermometer, and other data incidental to the determination, the heat value of the sample can be calculated. On paper, the method appears simple indeed, but in practice the determination of the heat of combustion is one of the most difficult of the various coal analyses. This h as led to considerable investigational work in order to obtain formula: whereby calorific values of solid fuels could be calculated from proximate analysis data al one. The proximate analysis of a fuel consists of the determination of moisture, ash, and volatile matter, with fixed carbon by difference. Sulphur determinations properly belong to the ultimate analysis, but in this section of the country, where the sulphur content of the coal is comparatively high, a request for the proximate analysis of a fuel implies the determination of the sulphur as well.

Petroleum engineers are displaying considerable interest in those fundamental properties of matter and energy that control the phenomena of oil and gas production. The subject is a difficult one to investigate by laboratory experiments for two reasons: (1) it is impossible to reproduce in the laboratory the scale of forces and dimensions that exist in the underground reservoir; (2) if we attempt to scale down the dimensions we are unable to reduce all proportionally. It is as if we tried to construct a model blast furnace for the reduction of iron ore, and reduced all lineal dimensions. We should find that the interstices between the miniature chunks of ore would not permit rapid transfer of gases, that combustion and heat transfer would not take place as in the full size furnace and that, in short, the contraption would not work. Just so, when we attempt to make a reduced scale oil field we find we must have, not only miniature reservoir and miniature wells, but "miniature" sand, 011, gas, etc. Much valuable work, however, has been done along these experimental lines and more will no doubt follow, but investigators should bear this point in mind and strive to attain dimensional homogeneity and dynamical similarity in order that their conclusions may be translated into terms applying to the oil reservoir. As Gibson says,' "These conditions are attained when all terms of the physical equation have the same dimensions, . . . when all corresponding particles of the two systems trace out similar paths and when the velocities are such as to make all corresponding forces acting on two such particles in the same ratio." It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the mechanics of fluid movement as it pertains to the oil pool and to point out the complexity of the laws of fluid delivery under the conditions often found. We have to do, fundamentally, with confined fluids, possessing potential energy whose expenditure is restricted by certain properties of the confining media and of the fluids themselves. [Health and safety hazards from contamination of the atmosphere in places frequented by persons depend to a considerable extent on whether the contaminating agent possesses sense-perceptive properties which will give warning of its presence before it '.an create harmful conditions. If a distinct and easily recognized warning is given in advance of harmful conditions, hazards ace mitigated, but if warning properties are inadequate or absent, the hazards are augmented. When evaluating the hazard presented by a potentially harmful substance used under conditions of possible escape into the air of places frequented by persons, it is therefore necessary to consider the warning properties of the substance along with ether pertinent information such as toxicity, inflammability, physical properties, and mode of use. If the contaminating agent inherently lacks warning; properties it may be possible to impart them by adding to the hazardous substance a small quantity of a relatively harmless substance which has a high warning intensity.]

A study of the consumption of reagents used in flotation gives useful data as to the market which employment of the flotation process creates for the manufacturers of the necessary chemicals and oils, and furnishes a useful clue to the trends in flotation practice influencing the choice of reagents used and the' extent to which new reagents are displacing less suitable older reagents. In the present investigation an attempt has been made to cover both of these phases of the consumption of reagents in flotation. Unfortunately, however, the data collected in tie various districts have not been equally informative; some operators have reported very completely both the consumption of reagents and the metallurgical results obtained therewith, while others were apparently unable to supply these figures in sufficient detail to meet the requirements of this investigation. RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION Table 1 gives the tonnage of ore treated by flotation, as reported. This table shows that flotation has been most largely used in the concentration of copper ores, next in complex lead-zinc ores, followed by lead ores, zinc ores, miscellaneous ores, and copper-iron ores.

Recently there has been a considerable revival of interest in the effects of the various elements commonly added to brass for the purpose of increasing its strength. For many years the work of Guillet2 alone gave reliable information in this regard. Even today his determinations of the coefficients of equivalence of the various elements relative to zinc in brass are those universally employed in industry. This is so because these coefficients have stood the test of time—their substantial correctness has been proved in almost universal practice. It is not our intention to discuss here these coefficients or their use. Rather do we wish to emphasize the need for further systernatic studies of the mechanical properties of the ternary systems of copper, zinc, and other individual elements. Since Guillet published the results of his first investigations Millington, 16 Smalley33 and Thiband 45 have added somewhat to our information. In general they have confirmed the findings of Guillet, which may be stated in the following rather general terms: 1. The addition of aluminum to the 70:30 and 60:40 brasses progressively increases their hardness and strength and reduces their ductility and resistance to shock. 2. The addition of small amounts of iron to a 60:40 brass improves its strength without affecting its ductility. 3. The addition of small amounts of manganese to a 60:40 brass causes a progressive increase in its strength and reduction in its ductility. A considerable amount of information has been amassed in regard to the effect of nickel on brass (9, 22, 41) which it is unnecessary to refer to here, in view of the scope of this paper. The situation in regard to these alloys in 1926 was very clearly stated by an anonymous writer,47 in The Metallurgist of February of that year, whose remarks were so to the point that they are well worth quoting: It will he seen that there are still large fields remaining to be studied in each of these systems (those of the aluminum, iron, nickel and manganese brasses) before our knowledge is adequate. ONE of the important mineral discoveries of the eighteenth century was , that of the Minas Geraes, Brazil; diamond fields. The production of this and of .other diamond discoveries in neighboring states made Brazil the premier producer of diamonds, succeeding India; its 140 years of supremacy finally passed to- South Africa- 60 years ago. Three times have diamonds contributed heavily to Portugal's somewhat checkered financial history; first in the sixteenth and seventeenth- centuries when the diamond trade of India was controlled by its citizens residing in ,Goa, later in the late eighteenth and the first 75 years of the nineteenth century when the Brazilian fields were the world's source of diamonds, and now, when the Angola diamond mines are the principal source of revenue of its colony, Portuguese West Africa. Certain phases in the history of the administration of the Brazilian field are sufficiently curious to warrant description.

Rock-dusting is an. effective means of preventing coal-dust from propagating an explosion in a coal mine, but it will not prevent gas from igniting-explosively and with much attendant damage locally. Ventilation must therefore be effective at all times, regardless of the employment of other explosion-prevention methods, if gas explosions are to be avoided. This paper describes a gas explosion which occurred in as bituminous mine that was well rock-dusted at the point of ignition and which exemplifies the value of rock-dusting, the necessity of maintaining effective ventilation, and the need of permissible rock-dusting machines receiving power from a permissible locomotive. Description of Explosion The mine in which this explosion occurred is developed on a panel system in a practically level seam; the panel entries are driven in pairs, and the air current intakes on the right entry and returns on the left entry. Near the mouth of the intake a door is placed to control the ventilation; board stoppings are placed in crosscuts, except the second from the face, in which a brattice cloth curtain is hung, the last crosscut is left open and line brattices conduct the air current from the last crosscut to the faces. In No. 7 entry the last cross-cut was 152 feet from the face, the line brattice being within 38 feet of this face, and the second crosscut was 250 feet outby the face of the back entry or return. Seven days prior to the explosion the intake and return entries were rock-dusted to within 38 feet of the face, and as the entry had advanced during the week, the rock-dusting was to be extended.

GEOPHYSICAL investigations based on radioactivity have been applied to the earth's crust for the purpose of discovering bodies rich in radioactive substances, or for the location of solutions with high emanation or radioactive-salt content, or for the detection of oil, which, in virtue of colloidal properties, has strong powers of radioactive absorption. RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES Radioactive substances are distributed in all rocks, waters, and gases in the earth's crust in small quantities. Granites and similar acidic rocks are richest in uranium and thorium, two chief radioactive substances; yet the quantities present in such rocks are of the order 10-12g., this concentration being expressed in grams per gram of the whole substance per cubic centimeter. In granites the uranium yields, according to Haddock, 3 X 10-12 g. of radium per gram of rock. In basalts the uranium yields 1.19 X 10-12 g. per gram per cubic centimeter. Of thorium the granites yield -2 X 10-5 g. per gram of rock; the basalts, 0.77 X 10-5 g. per gram. Certain series of alkalis of low atomic weight, like potassium and rubidium, show weak radioactivity; this property has no significance so far for geological research. The uranium is esti-mated indirectly from the electrical properties of one of its derivatives as a -gas (emanation) into which it is transformed. The thorium is expressed directly, though it is measured as a derivative, thorium emana-tion. There is a measure for the gaseous radium emanation, the curie, which is that quantity of radium emanation, or radon, which stands in equilibrium with 1 g. of radium. The concentration of the emanation is the Mache unit corresponding to 3.64 X 10-10 curie per liter. When gases become permeated by alpha, beta, and gamma rays, plus and minus ions are produced in them by the decomposition of neutral gas molecules, and under the influence of an electrical field these ions are given opposite motions. The measurement of the alpha rays and the bisection thicknesses of the beta and gamma rays is a means of analyzing unknown radioactive substances. These rays accompany the disintegration of radioactive substances and arise from "spontaneous internal changes

Introductory The Alberta Provincial Government has contemplated a revision of the Mines Act for some time past, and it is understood that a definite decision has now been made to do this at the next session of the Legislature. The Operators' and Miners' organizations of the Province have been asked, or at least have been given the opportunity, to submit their views and ideas relative to the proposed changes. The operators have already drafted out a number of changes which they feel would improve the Act from the standpoint of safety and practicability, and this paper has been prepared so that the general membership of the Rocky Mountain Branch of the Institute, which is composed largely of the operating and certificated officials of the mines, might have an opportunity to discuss, criticize, and improve upon the suggested changes which the operators are putting forward.

THE following notes represent significant excerpts from a mass of records of experimental work done in the ore-dressing laboratory at the Columbia School of Mines during the years 1926 to 1928-inclusive. CLASSIFICATION OF EXPERIMENTAL WORK The experiments performed may be grouped for purposes of description under the following general -headings: I. Collecting agents. a. A method for quantifying collecting effect. b. Coating with undissolved collecting agents (oils) c. Action of dissolved collecting agents. II. Frothing agents. a. A method for quantifying frothing effect. b. Relation between frothing effect and chemical composition. III. Inorganic reagents. a. Methods of studying the effects of these reagents. b. Effect on slime dispersion. c. Effect on sulfides. SUMMARY OF THE ORIGINS OF PRESENT-DAY FLOTATION PRACTICE The first practicable, foolproof method of froth flotation was described in U. S. patent 835120, issued in 1906 to Sulman, Picard and Ballot, and in the equivalent patents in other countries. A number of less simple methods of producing the same result had been described previously in patent publications and otherwise.1 The reagents specified in all of these early patents were "oils" and, in addition, some inorganic substance, usually an acid. The quantities of reagents recommended and added were enormous when' compared with those used today.

The Tennessee Copper Co. operated two mines in the Ducktown district during 1928. The Burra Burra mine is much the larger operation and is the chief source of the ore smelted and treated in the, company's smelter and acid plant rat Copperhill, 4.5 miles from Ducktown. This mine operates steadily and furnishes a regular output of about 40,000 tons per month. The Eureka mine is operated irregularly and produces a much smaller tonnage of high-sulphur ore the rate of output depending upon the demand for sulphur. During 1928 about 60 per cent of the combined output of these mines was shipped directly to the smelter, and the balance was concentrated before shipment in the flotation plant located near the mines. THE senior author of this paper has expressed the belief that when gamma iron transforms into alpha iron on reaching the A3 point, each gamma grain does not change bodily into one or more alpha grains but that the alpha phase forms first at the boundaries and along the crystallographic planes of the austenite grains.1 To quote: On cooling through the point A, at about 900° C., iron passes from the gamma condition to a. new allotropic form generally designated as alpha. This transforma¬tion, however, is not instantaneous. There are good reasons for believing that it begins at the grain boundaries and along the octahedral planes of the crystals and that it progresses until each grain of gamma iron is changed into a grain of alpha iron, the resulting structure being similar to that of gamma iron. Were it possible to retain at room temperature pure iron but partially transformed, it seems probable that a Widmanstättian structure, or rather, as later explained, a martensitic structure would be observed (Fig. 1), consisting of alpha iron at the boundaries and at the octahedral planes, and of a groundmass of gamma iron. In order to confirm, if possible, the accuracy of that view, a number of experiments were conducted. Polished samples of electrolytic iron were heated in a vacuum, maintained in the gamma range for several hours and quenched in different media. It was hoped by such means to produce and retain on the polished surfaces a pattern which would reveal the mechanism of the allotropic transformation. The samples were placed in evacuated quartz tubes, heated to 1000° C. and held 2 hr. at that temperature. The tubes were then immersed in the quenching bath. Iced brine and liquid air were used first. The polyhedral austenitic structure existing at the time of immersion was very clearly revealed (Fig. 2). This is generally ascribed to iron volatilizing at the grain boundaries.

Foreword The complete history and early development of the Sullivan mine was fully covered in a paper entitled 'The Development of the Sullivan Mine and Processes for the Treatment of its Ores', prepared by the staff of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, and presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division of the Institute at Trail in October, 1924. At a subsequent meeting at Blairmore, Mr. E. G. Montgomery read a paper on the mine, and in 1926 Mr. M. M. O'Brien brought the subject up to date at the joint meeting of the American and Canadian Institutes at Cranbrook. The present paper is necessarily based largely on these earlier accounts. Discovery and Early Development The outcrop was discovered in 1892 and the property was bonded and later sold to the Sullivan Group Mining Company, of Spokane. From 1896 to 1899, surface stripping and test pits (at A) around the outcrop exposed a vien of sulphides with varying amounts of lead and zinc. In some places, a 35 per cent lead ore carrying 15 ounces of silver was found. These lenses were of commercial value. With the completion of the Kimberley branch of the Canadian Pacific railway, in 1900, some systematic development was started. A shaft l00 feet in depth was sunk (at B). Shaft-house, boiler-room, and compressor-plant were erected, and a steam diamond-drill was put into operation.

[Iron oxides, when reduced at temperatures below 900° form a dark gray substance, very porous bait otherwise in almost the same form as the original particles. In the temperature ire range of 1,000 to 1,100° the product is pertly sintered but still shows the outlines of the original particles. Those products are known as "sponge iron." At temperatures of 1,100 to 1,2000 the metallic iron begins to flow together and to a semifused, pasty, porous mass called a "bloom," which can he worked under a hammer to form a product similar to wrought iron; it contains slag inclusions and is too low in carbon to make steel. If the temperature is 1,300 to 1,300°, part of the iron will fuse enough to absorb more carbon. The dissolved carbon lowers the melting point and still more carbon is absorbed. The melted portion acts a flux for the unmelted metallic particles until the entire mass becomes a high-carbon fluid known as "cast iron." Sponge iron was probably the form in which the first iron was recovered from the ores. As early as the eighth century the Catlan forge3 developed into a low-shaft furnace known as the "high bloomary," in which iron eras produced in the form of a pasty mass. In 1340 the first blast furnace was built in Belgium. The greater part of the iron was made into wrought-iron blooms by crude puddling processes. Charcoal was used as the fuel until tie latter part of the 17th century when coke was used in England. In 1865 Bessemer built his first converter in. England, and within a few years the Siemen's regenerative open-hearth furnace was developed, also in England. Enormous expansion in the metallurgy of iron followed. The idea of "direct processes" for the production of iron arid steel has persisted throughout all this time. The production of steel from sponge iron has theoretical advantages over the present-day standard methods, and handreds of so--called "direct processes" have been proposed or tried during the past century.4]

The utilization of natural deposits of salt is one of the oldest industries in Alberta. In 1820, Sir James Richardson visited Salt river, and in the same year D. W. Harmon states chat "clown Slave river, there are several places, where almost any quantity of excellent dean white salt may be taken, with as much ease as sand along the seashore. From these places the greater part of the northwest is supplied with this valuable article". This reference is to the salt chat occurs around springs on Salt river at the northern boundary of the Province. This and other occurrences will be described later in this paper. It is not on account of the development of salt and gypsum in Alberta chat this paper has been prepared, but rather to draw attention to the widespread distribution of salt-bearing and gypsum-bearing rocks, and to the stratigraphic importance of these rocks . The origin of the deposits of salt, gypsum, anhydrite, and dolomite is discussed, and the economic significance of these minerals is considered. There is no salt production reported from Alberta in 1928.

Northern British Columbia is a term which probably conveys to various individuals quite different meanings. To the average person it signifies an area of indefinite size and indefinite position which may start at Prince Rupert, Stewart, or somewhere else, and end at Alaska or .the Yukon. Many people, in their conception, fail to encompass in their mind's eye that vast tract of land lying ~o the east of the panhandle of Alaska. Few realize that the area north of an east-west line through Stewart represents more than one-third of the Province and is, of course, the part most appropriately designated as northern British Columbia. This section, more especially the northernmost 100,000 square miles, from political, geographic, and economic viewpoints stands isolated perhaps more than any other part of British Columbia. Unlike the rest of the Province, it has no coast line, being cut off from the Pacific ocean by a narrow strip of Alaska. It is bounded on the north by the Yukon, and on the east by Alberta. In the south this northernmost 100,000 square miles is limited by a divide of rugged mountainous country separating the drainage basins of the Stikine and Liard rivers from those to the south.

This paper describing mining practice at Morenci, Ariz., is one of a series of articles on mining method, and practice in the various mining districts in the United States. At present (1929) practically all the mineral production in the Morenci district is from the Humboldt mine of the Morenci Branch, Phelps Dodge Corporation. The mining method used is adapted to the type of ore body being exploited; it has been developed by adopting methods used elsewhere and making necessary changes to fit local conditions. Improvements in current practices are still being made.
