Key indicator hydrothermal alteration minerals formed from fluids of known fluid composition (neutral versus acid pH) and temperature have been mapped for New Zealand (NZ) geothermal fields by visible/near-infrared (VNIR) and short wave infrared (SWIR) reflectance spectroscopy. Smectite, interstratified illite-smectite and illite formed from neutral pH fluids have zoned distributions with higher temperature illite (>220ºC) in and around the upflow of chloride waters and low temperature smectite (<150ºC) on the margins (eg Ohaaki, NZ). In adularia-sericite epithermal deposits, Au-Ag veins are similarly surrounded by zoned clays, with mineralised veins enclosed by illite (eg Martha, NZ) or occurring at the illite/illite-smectite boundary (eg Favona, NZ). Reflectance spectroscopy is also highly effective in identifying minerals formed from acid fluids; both steam-heated acid-sulfate waters (eg kaolinite and alunite at Rotokawa, NZ), or magmatic-hydrothermal fluids (eg pyrophyllite and topaz at Ngatamariki, NZ). These same alteration minerals commonly show zoned distributions in high sulfidation epithermal deposits (eg Rodalquilar, Spain) and in lithocaps associated with porphyry deposits (eg Lepanto, Philippines). Numerous Fe-Cu-Au-rare earth element (REE) deposits have been identified within the Palaeoproterozoic Dongchuan Group of the Kangdian region of SW China. Geochronologic and geochemical data of the dolerite dykes and other volcanic rocks reveal extensional activity occurred about 1.7 Ga called ‘Kunyang Rifting’. The Kangdian region underwent variable degrees of extension, meaning that breakup in the central part of this region occurred earlier than in the north. Research on microphysiography, isotopic geochemistry and inclusions of the Yinachang typical Fe-Cu-Au-REE deposits suggest that the dominant mineralisation fluid is high-temperature, high-salinity magma fluid, containing alkalic components, volatile phase and Cu-Au. Metasomatism and mixing between this magmatic fluid and carbonaceous wall rock and meteoric water caused the precipitation of Fe, REEs and Cu-Au. A chalcopyrite Re-Os age from the Yinachang deposit obtained during this study is some 50–100 million years younger than the timing of emplacement of the deeply sourced Haizi and Dongchuan dolerites. The Yinachang deposit is a typical iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG)-type deposit, and the presence of this and other deposits in the Kangdian region indicates that the region hosts an intraplate extension-related IOCG system within the western edge of the Yangtze Block, China.CITATION:Hou, L, Ding, J, Zhang, J R, Zhu, S B, Wu, S Y and Peng, H J, 2015. Private equity (PE) firms are comparatively free of mandatory requirements for the level and scope of due diligence applied prior to making investment decisions in minerals projects when compared to listed entities, sovereign funds or financial institutions adopting the Equator Principles (Equator Principles Association, 2013). While this freedom allows for flexibility, agility and innovation in making investment decisions, it can also expose PE firms to material risks that may impact their ability to successfully list the projects or attract later financing.Financial institutions and investors with mandatory due diligence and disclosure standards may refrain from investment in or acquisition of a project if it fails to meet various performance requirements. There are many high-profile projects that have suffered significant write-downs on book value after acquisition because specific non-mining issues were not adequately assessed. Thus, a PE firm may be left with an asset that is difficult to divest and incapable of securing development finance.PE firms can manage this risk by being aware of the growth trend in the adoption of ‘international standards’ in addition to host nation standards and legislative requirements. This paper outlines key issues for PE firms to address to maximise the chances of obtaining funding or successfully taking an exploration or mining project through to listing or divestment. Two steps are required: identification of gaps in performance and priority matters of interest to financial institutions and development of action plans to ensure that the priority requirements are met or capable of being met.A PE firm can set its project for success by understanding the social and environmental performance requirements of international standard financiers and by setting the project on the right path to meeting these requirements, and thus making it an attractive investment.CITATION:Allen, P, Stoker, P and Keogh, A, 2015. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baiyinnuo’er Zn-Pb deposit is a typical skarn deposit in NE China. Skarn and orebodies mainly occur between different units of the Lower Permian Huanggangliang Formation carbonates-sandstone-mudstone or within the contact between intrusions and marble. Skarn minerals are dominated by prograde garnet and clinopyroxene, and the main ore minerals are sphalerite and galena. We conducted single fluid inclusion compositional studies using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry on clinopyroxene (pre-ore-stage mineral) and sphalerite and calcite (syn-ore-stage minerals). The results show that the Baiyinnuo’er fluids are distinctly different from basinal brine but similar to magmatic fluid, thereby indicating that the deposit has a dominantly magmatic origin. This interpretation has also been supported by the Cl/Br mole ratios, which remain stable (~500) in different fluid stages. The decreases for most of the elements in the fluid inclusions from pre-ore-stage clinopyroxene to syn-ore-stage sphalerite and calcite suggest that mixing with groundwater has occurred during mineralisation, with significant Zn, Pb and Ag deposition.CITATION:Shu, Q, Hammerli, J, Chang, Z, Lai, Y and Huizenga, J-M, 2015. Privately-owned companies considering investing in the resources sector can optimise their investment decisions by adopting a systematic technical assessment of acquisition assets, similar to the approach commonly adopted by public financial institutions and publicly-listed companies.Technical due diligence provides a process to identify key geological, mining, geotechnical, metallurgical, environmental and social risks and opportunities and determine the most likely business case and valuation of assets. Technical due diligence is commonly carried out in parallel with legal, commercial and financial due diligence, often involving the acquirer, to maximise the understanding of the investment.There are significant advantages in investors conducting a comprehensive technical due diligence, which typically involves site visits and project assessment to international standards by an independent, multidisciplinary team of experts. The outcomes provide the opportunity for the investor to make early, informed decisions and to understand and manage risks.Technical due diligence may be carried out at several stages: when considering and weighing up a number of investment options, prior to and during a transaction or immediately post-transaction. In the first stage, the outcomes will inform the choice of investment and, more particularly, whether there are any fundamental flaws in the projects being considered. In the second stage, due diligence outcomes can inform the level of investment and approach to risk management and planning. The Xiong’ershan district in the southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) contains more than 20 gold deposits hosted in the late Neoarchean to early Palaeoproterozoic amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks or late Palaeoproterozoic unmetamorphosed volcanic rocks. Gold mineralisation consists mainly of auriferous quartz veins and disseminated ores in hydrothermally altered zones, with additional gold mineralised breccia pipes. Gold orebodies are strictly controlled by secondary- or higher-order brittle/ductile-brittle faults. Isotopic dating reveals two separate episodes of gold mineralisation: the Shanggong and Dianfang deposits formed in the range of 236 ± 1.4 to 202 ± 18 Ma, whereas the Gongyu, Qianhe and Qiyugou deposits formed between 135.0 ± 0.5 Ma and 124.0 ± 1.0 Ma. Stable isotope and noble gas geochemistry studies indicate that the Triassic gold deposits were precipitated from deeply-sourced, low-salinity fluids at 250–350°C, but whether the fluids were mainly derived from metamorphic devolatilisation or magmatic degassing remains unresolved. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous deposits most likely precipitated from a dominantly magmatic fluid, although metamorphic and meteoric components cannot be ruled out. Results from this study, when combined with regional geological and geochemical data, suggest that the Triassic gold mineralisation was generated by the deformation associated with the collision between the North China and Yangtze cratons, forming the Qinling-Dabie orogen. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous gold veining was a result of lithospheric destruction of the NCC, a process initiated by plate subduction from both the south and north since late Palaeozoic but ultimately triggered by the westward subduction of the palaeo-Pacific plate in the late Mesozoic. This study helps to reconcile the long-term debate on the timing, genesis and geodynamic setting of gold mineralisation in the Xiong’ershan and other districts along the southern margin of the NCC.CITATION:Li, J-W and Tang, K F, 2015. The Misima gold mine, located on Misima Island within the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea, was operated by Misima Mines Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Placer Dome Asia Pacific Limited (Placer), between 1988 and 2004. During this period, the mine produced 3.7 Moz of gold and 22.2 Moz of silver. In June 2012, the Special Mining Lease for the property was surrendered and incorporated into an Exploration Licence (EL). WCB Resources Ltd (WCB) entered into an exploration farm-in agreement with Pan Pacific Copper covering this EL.In June 2013, WCB published a new mineral resource of the Umuna deposit at Misima. All the drill hole data used for estimation was historical data collected by the previous owners of the Misima mine between 1977 and 2001. No new drilling was carried out by WCB. Confidence that the data could be relied on was provided by detailed interrogation of the existing data, reconciliation of the new resource model against production data and significant input from individuals who had previously been involved with the data collection, resource estimation and production activities of the Misima mine during its operation.This extended abstract will consider the challenges associated with locating, retrieving and validating historical data to use as inputs to produce an updated Mineral Resource estimate and comment on the material value of appropriate data storage, documentation and record keeping through the life of a project. It will also comment on the value of WCB obtaining access to the intellectual knowledge of many professionals that were former employees of Placer. The Martabe gold mine is Indonesia’s largest precious metals-only producer and is also one of few significant hard rock mine developments in the past 15 years. Martabe is located on the west coast of the island of Sumatra in the North Sumatra province. The mine commenced operation in mid-2012, producing over 280 koz of gold and 1.5 Moz of silver in its first full year of production.Martabe consists of a cluster of six currently identified high-sulfidation epithermal deposits. The deposits lie in a north–south corridor with an approximately 8 km strike length and 1.5 km width. The total Measured, Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate of the deposits is currently 8.2 Moz of gold and over 75 Moz of silver.The exploration program at Martabe has added more than 2 Moz of gold and 15 Moz of silver to the Mineral Resource estimates (Measured, Indicated and Inferred categories) since G-Resources acquired the project in 2009. This has been achieved at an average cost of US$17 in exploration expenditure per ounce of resource added, which includes helicopter-supported drilling programs in rugged forest terrain.The factors that led to this exploration success at Martabe include: in the first instance and most importantly, recognition of the geological potential of the mineralised system continually updating and improving ‘orebody knowledge’ and applying new ideas to the exploration program ongoing engagement and consultation by world professionals with geological expertise in similar systems ongoing executive management support for the program the high quality of work completed by previous owners a strong focus on quality control, staff development and operational safety, with the JORC Code (in particular Table 1 of the Code) as the underlying basis for quality control continual and positive engagement with government, community and other external stakeholders.This paper will discuss in detail the first of these two factors. It looks at graphite's market prospects over the next few years. Natural graphite is used in refractories, which accounts for ca. 20% of global demand and is forecast to grow by 2-4%/a to 2020, while the largest growth in demand (increases of 10-15%/a) is estimated to come from its application in anodes for lithium-ion batteries, especially those in hybrid electric vehicles. Este inca fue el séptimo gobernante del Tahuantinsuyo, cuyo verdadero nombre deriva de los términos quechua: yahuar "sangre" y huacac, "lloró’; del verbo huacay,"‘llorar", es decir, el que "lloró sangre". Esta anomalía de sus órganos visuales se relaciona con el "sorrompi", o inflación de los párpados que se produce por la reberveración del sol en la nieve que puede ocurrir en zonas alto-andinas (4,500 m.s.n.m.). Otras enfermedades derivadas de la minería son el "usputani", o hemorragia nasal de forma abrupta que se produce por la inadaptación a las zonas altoandninas y el " soroche" o déficit de oxígeno en la sangre. En consecuencia, el inca probablemente desarrolló estas enfermedades por su estancia en la zona altoandina.

The current status of the heavy and light rare-earth elements outside China is reviewed. New suppliers of the light rare-earth elements are Lynas (Australia/Malaysia) and Molycorp (USA), which are anticipated to process 11 000 and up to 10 000 t/y, respectively, and the most advanced heavy rare-earth elements project is Avalon's Nechalacho project at Thor Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada. U3O8 Corp has potential rare-earth elements production, e.g. ytrrium and neodymium, from its Berlin deposit in Colombia and Namibia Rare Earth's Lofdal project (Area 4) has potential to produce an average of 1 500 t/y of separated rare-earth oxides. With regard to the three historical producers, India has some small-scale production, Brazil has been a small-volume producer and has potential for new heavy rare-earth elements production, while South Africa has no current production

"Slope construction in shale can present some interesting challenges for geotechnical design engineers and contractors alike. There are challenges that can be expected and designed-for; however, all too frequently, such challenges manifest themselves as “surprises” in the field. Common constructability challenges can include those such as drill hole deviation during drilling for controlled blasting; and, excavation slope instability arising from inconsistent perimeter control drilling. Drill hole deviation results from the cumulative effects from both drilling mechanics and rock mass conditions. Once a hole has initiated the deviation trajectory, it is difficult to rectify drill steel position. Although such challenges are not necessarily unique to shale, they are often exacerbated by weak, weathered and transversely isotropic nature of bedrock conditions. All too often, the working assumption is that shale is “soft” and easily excavatable; however, this blanket assumption can prove to be costly. This paper is intended to provide design professionals and contractors with the practical considerations needed to avoid the “surprises” associated with drill hole deviation, and minimize the potential for costly claims.INTRODUCTIONFor all the slopes that have been excavated worldwide, and for such advancements in excavation technology and field characterization, one might be tempted to believe that the industry almost has slope development down to a science. This is frequently not the case, especially for weak/weathered and anisotropic bedrock. Excavation contractors are still pushed to the limits of what their technology can achieve, and engineers are all too often called to the field during construction, to make potentially risky onthe- fly decisions relative to excavatability, short and long-term slope stability, and project safety. Although there have been a host of other research papers and journal articles that have been written on the subject of deviation over the past 30 years (Brown, Geen, Sinha, 1981), the problems associated with drill hole deviation are still all too frequent. This fact is especially true for civil engineering surface excavations in bedrock."

"In order to conserve the coal resources, many coal mines which have been mined begin to re-mine. Re-mining face is of complicated circumstances and coal spontaneous combustion is unknown, so experiments are designed to study the characteristics of multiple oxidized coal samples. The investigation into the oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. The non-caking coal is collected as coal samples. The raw coal sample with initial oxidation and the sample after second oxidation and third oxidation are obtained after a certain treatment of the coal. The temperature-programmed system, and proximate and ultimate analysis are adopted to compare the releases of gaseous products of spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of the multiple oxidized coal sample. With the increase of oxidation times, experimental results indicate that the oxygen consumption rate, the release rate of carbon monoxide and the intensity of heat release are significantly decrease. The characteristic temperature dropped and the size of the pores in coal is smaller as well. INTRODUCTION China accounts for 13% of global coal resources [1-2]. In recent years, more and more coal mines begin to re-mine in order to conserve resources. This production mode is to mine coal pillar left by last exploitation or unavailable for mining. In the process of slicing mining for coal seam groups or thick coal seams, the second or multiple oxidation due to the mining-induced effect, may take place in the goaf of the lower seam. So the spontaneous combustion is prone to occur in this area. The study on oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. Scholars [3-7] have discussed the workability of re-mining for coal mines, verify the feasibility of the existing mining technology for re-mining area, and set up the prevention measures of coal spontaneous combustion. But all these measures are only based on on-site observation data, instead of experiment on spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of re-mining coal samples which have a great importance for early prediction and forecast. The authors aim at investigating the multiple-oxidated coal spontaneous combustion law, and perfecting the coal spontaneous combustion mechanism to provide a basis for the prediction and forecast."

"The effect of applied DC potentials on the bioleaching of a chalcopyrite concentrate in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is discussed. Copper dissolution was the highest at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE), while all the dissolved copper got cathodically deposited at a negative potential of -600mV (SCE). Electrobioleaching at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE) was established at different pulp densities as a function of time. The effect of applied potentials and electrolytic currents on the activity and growth of bacterial cells was assessed. Preadaptation of bacterial cells to the concentrate slurry and electrolytic growth conditions significantly enhanced copper dissolution. Electrochemical and biochemical mechanisms involved in electrobioleaching are illustrated with respect to oxidative dissolution and biocatalysis of anodic oxidation. IntroductionIn recent years, the bioleaching of low-grade chalcopyrite ores as well as their flotation concentrates has been receiving increased attention. Use of mesophilic bacteria such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in the bioleaching of chalcopyrite does not yield desirable copper extraction rates due to its easy passivation.Bioleaching of chalcopyrite using A. ferrooxidans has been reported to be very inefficient, and use of thermophilic bacteria at higher temperatures is recommended to improve its bioleaching rates. Bioleaching under imposed applied DC potentials or currents has been shown to enhance not only bioleaching kinetics but also to confer selectivity in mineral dissolution (Abhakumari, 1996; Chirpa Selvi and Natarajan, 1998; Natarajan, 1992a, b,c). Electrochemical principles governing electrobioleaching have been earlier illustrated (Jyothi et.al, 1989). The role of applied potentials on the activity and growth of A. ferrooxidans has also been studied (Natarajan, 1992b). Also, the electrochemical aspects of bioleaching of several sulfide minerals when present alone or in binary and ternary combinations have been reported (Jyothi et al., 1989). The electroleaching of copper-nickel concentrate (Natarajan et al., 1985) and electrobioleaching of sphalerite concentrates have already been studied (Selvi et al.,1998). However, it is possible to enhance the bioleaching rate of chalcopyrite in the presence of A. ferrooxidans under galvanic conditions in the presence of nobler minerals such as pyrite (Jyothi et al.,1989). Also, dissolution of chalcopyrite can be significantly enhanced under applied potential conditions. "The Warm Springs Extension (WSX) is one of a series of projects that will eventually extend the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) from Fremont to San Jose, California. A cut and cover tunnel was used for a portion of the extension that runs through Fremont Central Park to minimize the impacts that an at-grade railway would have on the Park. A cement deep soil mix (CDSM) wall was selected by the engineer as the preferred method of providing structural support and groundwater cut-off for a portion of the tunnel where it passes through an important aquifer and near Lake Elizabeth. In addition to the CDSM wall, a jet grout plug was constructed at the base of the tunnel to provide a complete groundwater cut-off.This paper will discuss the unique quality assurance and quality control measures taken for the soil mix wall and jet grout plug as well as the methods used to repair leaks and mitigate water seepage through the exposed wall and grout plug.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Warm Springs Extension (WSX) project is located south of the existing Fremont BART station extending 8.9-km (5.4 miles) to Warm Springs District in Fremont, California. The WSX project has been divided into two contracts with different delivery methods. In order to minimize impacts to Fremont Central Park, a subway was selected at this portion of the alignment under a conventional design/bid/build contract.The Fremont Central Park Subway (FCPS) which begins on the south side of Walnut Ave and ends just north of Paseo Padre Parkway and is about 2.3-km (1.4 miles) long. Fig. 1 shows the entire WSX and the FCPS project. The FCPS contract consists of a cut-and-cover subway box, subway transition structures, ventilation structures and a section of which transverses Lake Elizabeth (a man-made lake). The geologic conditions consist of fill (sand, silt, clay and construction debris), Young Alluvium (clay and silt), Basin Deposits (clay, silt, and sand), and Older Alluvium (sand and gravel) as shown in Fig. 2.HYDROGEOLOGY OF THE PROJECT SITEThe FCPS is dominated by two geologic features - the Hayward Fault and the Above Hayward Fault (AHF) aquifer. The AHF aquifer provides a significant source and storage of water for the local water district. The underground subway will penetrate this aquifer and is up to 11m (36 ft) below the groundwater table. No groundwater was allowed to be pumped during construction of the subway box by Alameda County Water District (ACWD). To facilitate excavation for the subway box, temporary cut-off walls and a grout plug were designed to retain and resist high differential hydraulic pressure. The following section describes the selection of a deep soil mixing method for water cutoff. Design of the grout plug has been described in Lee, et al., 2011 and Fong and Lee, 2009, and is not the focus of this paper."
