Due to complex mineralogical and chemical interactions of the value and gangue mineral phases present in uranium-containing lateritic ores, deleterious pulp gelation which impacts on value metal recovery sometimes occur during atmospheric leaching. In this study, the leaching behavior and particle interactions of selected oxide (hematite, quartz) and clay minerals (muscovite, chlorite), which constitute predominant host gangue phases of typical lateritic uranium ores are investigated to provide basic, mechanistic understanding of temporal pulp gelation phenomenon. Isothermal, batch leaching with H2SO4 was carried out on concentrated dispersions (30 ? 57 wt.%) of single minerals at pH 1 and 25 or 70 °C and their concomitant solution, speciation and rheology (shear yield stress, viscosity) were characterized. It is clearly shown that despite the high oxide content of lateritic ores, the pulp chemistry and rheology is largely affected by the incongruent leaching behavior of more reactive, acid-consuming aluminosilicate clays. Furthermore, time- and temperature-dependent alumino-silicate species polycondensation interfacial reactions are shown to be responsible for the enhanced particle interactions, reflecting strong pulp rheology in agitation and pumping. If not properly mitigated, high pulp shear yield stress and viscosity have a striking impact on processability and hence, value metal recovery.

In diamond ores processing, final waste tailings size, rejected to dump, is one of the most important parameters. On one side, it is necessary to minimize losses of diamonds, whose size exceeds 1 mm, on the other side ? to provide for the plant high throughput and sufficiently low capital and energy costs, which is in greater part connected with disintegration process. Extensive laboratory, pilot-scale and commercial-scale dressability studies of different types of diamond ores have been performed at JSC ?Mekhanobr Engineering? in recent years. With that, special consideration was given to determination of the required ores? disintegration size that would provide for a high recovery of diamonds. In diamond ores processing, in order to exclude breaking of large diamonds, stage disintegration is used with regrinding of light fractions and heavy fraction X-ray fluorescent separation tailings. On account of rather weak bonds of diamonds with enclosing minerals, in crushing and grinding of diamond ores, selective disintegration takes place, with aggregates? breakup along plane surfaces of least bonding, which facilitates liberation of diamonds and their transition to free state. Heavy components losses with different sizes of final dump tailings were studied in processing of large samples. It was established, that in order to almost completely exclude losses of heavy components over 1 mm size, light fractions had to be ground to 2.5-3 mm size, while X-ray fluorescent separation heavy tailings of -15+3 mm size do not contain diamonds larger 1 mm in aggregates, and their regrinding does not increase total recovery of diamonds. On the basis of the conducted studies, relationships regarding heavy components and diamonds losses with respect to diamond ores final disintegration size were obtained, providing for more rational organization of the ores disintegration and processing flow sheet. Oxidized zinc ores are the main source of zinc metal except sulfides. To have a better understanding about the performance of smithsonite and the main gangue, quartz, in flotation, the aggregation behaviors of smithsonite and quartz in water were confirmed by different techniques (sedimentation tests and optical microscopy). The experimental results show that smithsonite and quartz particles aggregate in the pH range 7.5-11. The results of zeta potential suggest that the aggregation does not correlate with the DLVO theory, when the iso-electric point of smithsonite and quartz is 8.0 and 2 respectively. When the solution pH is less than 8.0, smithsonite has an opposite charge to the quartz particles. Electrostatic adsorption makes effort on these two kinds of particles according to DLVO theory. Whereas, solution chemistry calculation shows the pH range 8-11 corresponds to hydroxide formation, suggesting that this is the species responsible for aggregation. And their concentrations are much higher in sodium hydroxide system than that in sodium carbonate system. Aggregation of smithsonite and quartz due to the flocculation action of zinc hydroxide is proposed.

A new short combined flow sheet including high intensity magnetic separation and flotation for a rare earth ore in Maoniuping deposit, China has been investigated. Massive conclusive results demonstrate, that it is critical to separate the ore by high intensity magnetic separation prior to flotation for tons of slimes and nonmagnetic gangue existing. The vital technological parameters affecting flotation have been studied in detail. Modified hydroxamic acid is an efficient collector for bastnasite flotation because of its high selectivity. Flotation results also indicate high temperature that play an unfavourable role on the recovery as well as the grade of bastnasite concentrate, when the rare earth ore is floated with modified hydroxamic acid and sodium silicate depressant. Bastnasite concentrates, averaging over 65 percent REO at an overall recovery of 82-84% is achieved by the new beneficiation technology. Metso has a long history supplying boilers for high ash coal firing. These boilers are based on circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology. CFB?s biggest benefit is fuel flexibility ? it can burn fuels from high moisture content to high ash content. Metso has delivered tens of CFB boilers burning waste or high ash coal starting on 80?s. Some of the boilers have been in operation twenty years meaning that there is a long term experience from these plants available. This feedback includes boiler performance and maintenance issues of the boiler. Metso is also delivering coal washing plants to improve coal quality, i.e. reducing ash content of the coal. The idea to combine coal washing plant and CFB boiler was made up two years ago in Metso. Up-coming legislation of coal washing and restrictions for washery reject land-filling in India are good drivers for this kind of concept. Pre-study of this kind of concept led to the conclusion that coal washing process can be fine-tuned so that reject?s calorific value is only 1100 kcal/kg and that was set as a target for boiler design. Metso shipped 200 tons of washery reject to its own research center located in Tampere Finland. First a wide range of fuel characterization tests were done in lab-scale and after that one week test run in 4 MW CFB pilot boiler was done. Test run proved that 1100 kcal/kg can be fired without any support fuel with special boiler design. Test run results gave a good set of data regarding combustion efficiency, emission performance and boiler dynamic behaviour when burning this kind of fuel. These results are introduced in this paper. Chitosan was tested as a depressant in the differential flotation separation of chalcopyrite and galena. The micro-flotation results showed that chitosan selectively depressed chalcopyrite while galena was floated by potassium ethyl xanthate in acidic solutions. With the addition of 0.67 mg/L chitosan (CT) in the slurry of chalcopyrite-galena mixtures at pH 4, the recovery of galena was 95% while that of chalcopyrite was 30%, indicating that chitosan could potentially be used in differential Cu-Pb sulfide separation. Furthermore, the study of chitosan with either low (LCT) or high molecular weight (HCT) in the differential flotation indicated that better separation was achieved by the chitosan with lower molecular weight (LCT). ToF-SIMS was employed to study the distribution of CT on the surface of chalcopyrite-galena mixtures by ion mass spectra analysis and surface imaging, which showed that CT adsorbed heavily on chalcopyrite but barely adsorbed on galena. The positive ion ToF-SIMS spectra provided information on the surface composition of chalcopyrite-galena mixtures after CT treatment. It appears that the selective adsorption of CT on chalcopyrite was originated from the strong interaction between NH3+ and Cu. Keywords: differential flotation, micro-flotation

A low volatile medium coking coal from Jharia coal field, India was used for this investigation. The proximate analysis of the sample shows that it contains about 25% ash, 21.4% volatile matter and 52.4% fixed carbon. The sizewise ash analysis of -0.5 mm coal indicates that -0.5+0.15 mm fraction contains lower ash (21.9%) than -0.15 mm fraction (29.7%). The flotation characteristics of the -0.5 mm coal were determined by release analysis. The study reveals that recovery of combustible at 15% ash is about 27% and 43% at 17% ash level. The low recovery is due to the presence of high ash in finer fraction. In order to improve the recovery, the -0.5 mm feed was classified into -0.5+0.15 mm and -0.15 mm fractions, and subjected to flotation separately. The recoverable combustible obtained from the release analysis of -0.5+0.15 mm at 15% ash level is 46%. The effect of collector dosage, frother dosage and aeration rate on flotation was studied. The responses of these variables in collectorless flotation of the -0.5+0.15 mm fraction containing low ash were also studied. A lower aeration and frother dosage favored the generation of clean coal with low ash. The ash content in the tailing stream from -0.5+0.15 mm flotation circuit is close to that of the original -0.15 mm fraction. The former is ground to -0.15 mm and the two fractions are processed together. As -0.15 mm fraction contains relatively higher ash, collector aided flotation using sodium silicate was performed to recover the clean coal with 17% ash. The products of the overall flotation circuit having different ash levels were recommended for use in different applications. The reject from -0.15 mm flotation circuit contained 56.4% ash which can be used for fluidized bed combustion (FBC). This eventually leads to complete utilization of coal.

Most of the iron ore washing plants set up in India consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers followed by multi-stage hydrocycloning of screw classifiers? overflow. The underflow of the hydrocyclones forms the concentrate which is used for pellets making. As the cut-point of hydrocyclones is generally at 20 microns, relatively lower diameter cyclones in a cluster with parallel feeding are used. This is found to, often, result in choking of the spigots, at times, by extraneous material as well reporting along with the slurry. It is observed to lead to sub-optimum performance of the cyclones with loss of iron values into cyclone overflow and thereafter into tailings. Analysis of data of an operating beneficiation plant (Beneficiation Plant - 1, BP - 1) of M/s Jindal South West (JSW) Steel Limited, Karnataka, India over a period of one year indicated that weight recovery of the concentrate from two-stage hydrocycloning was 45% (with respect to feed to the cyclones) and assaying 63.43% Fe, 4.43% SiO2 and 2.32% Al2O3. CSIR - National Metallurgical Laboratory - Madras Centre (NML - MC), India developed flotation process for processing screw classifier overflow with a view to improve the recovery of ultrafine iron values from it. Detailed investigations at laboratory scale flotation column and on-site pilot plant trials proved that the production of the concentrate and productivity of the plant could be enhanced by adopting reverse cationic column flotation technology. It was established that a typical screw classifier overflow analyzing 60.54% Fe, 5.95% SiO2 and 3.67% Al2O3 could be upgraded to 64.21% Fe, 2.64% SiO2 and 2.20% Al2O3 with 82.7% weight and 84.7% Fe recovery. This translates into an increase of 80% in weight recovery of the concentrate compared to what is being obtained, at present, by two-stage cycloning. It had an added advantage of reduced SiO2 in the concentrate. Thus, SiO2 in the final concentrate could be reduced to 2.64% from 4.43% by adopting column flotation. The concentrate so generated meets the stringent specifications, especially in terms of alumina in it(should be less than 2.50%) for pellets making. Later, JSW Steel Limited set up the flotation plant in BP - 1 based on the process developed by NML - MC and was commissioned in 2010. The ball level and pulp load play a key role in the operation of industrial scale ball mills. These two operating variables have a significant influence on the performance of the ball mill and any attempts to optimize these devices require manipulating either one or both of these variables. There are several models that can be employed to perform simulations to optimize the performance of industrial ball mills. However, most of these models require ball load and pulp load measurements as inputs to calibrate the model. The changes suggested by the simulator also provide operating regimes that involve moving either the ball level or pulp load and sometimes both of these variables. A ball mill model coded in JKSimMet was used in conjunction with the Sensomag to optimize the secondary ball mill at Waterval concentrator in South Africa. The results show that the perfect mixing ball mill model can be used in conjunction with the Sensomag to optimize the performance of the secondary ball mill.

The response of the air/water interfaces to deformation in presence of surfactants is affected by the adsorption/desorption rate, re-orientation and exchange rate of surfactant. These surface properties can be observed using equilibrium and dynamic surface tension and surface elasticity measurements. However, the effect of these parameters on bubble size in dynamic conditions has not been studied due to the difficulty in capturing freshly formed bubbles in dynamic conditions. The paper presents a new experimental set-up designed and built at the Aalto University, called Shear Force Observation Chamber(SOC). The setupallows the monitoring and analysisof freshly formed air/liquid interfaces in dynamic conditions and facilitates the study of the effect of dynamic surface tension and surface elasticityon freshly formed air bubblesin presence of surfactants. The method helps to establish correlation between bubble size and dynamic interfacial properties and bubble-bubble interaction in turbulent flow. Dowfroth 200, Nasfroth 240 and Dowfroth 250 commercial flotation frothers were tested in this study. The results show a marked difference between results obtained in dynamic conditions compared to the static conditions. The results are presented and the reasons and implication to flotation modelling are discussed in the paper. In order to determine the optimal process parameters of agitation leaching and provide industrial process design parameters, experiments were carried out on leaching behaviors of copper oxide ore with high mud content. Condition tests show that the main factors affect the leaching efficiency as follows: Temperature, Initial acid concentration, leaching time and particle size. As the temperature increases, the copper leaching rate was increased. At 60 ?, the initial acid concentration 80g / L, leaching time 2h, liquid-solid ratio 2:1 and grinding fineness65%-0.074mm, the optimal copper extraction was 83.15%, the acid consumption was 187.91kg / t. ore. The slag produced in metallurgical smelting processes contains considerable amount of valuable metals. The present work focuses on recovery of copper value by froth flotation from the copper smelter slag. The slag samples are subjected to detailed characterization including automated quantitative mineralogy using Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA). The MLA results indicate that a part of copper is present in sulphide form in fayalite (iron-silicate) matrix and very poorly liberated. SEM-EDX analyses also reveal that a certain part of the copper is present within the fayalite (Fe-Ca-Si) matrix, perhaps either as lattice impurity or very fine grain. The copper smelter slag is ground in wet mode in a ball mill, to particle size distribution suitable for flotation. Subsequently, the slurry undergoes froth-flotation in lab-scale Denver-type flotation cell. Various combinations of sodium iso-propyl xanthate (SIPX) and alkyl hydroxamate collectors are used along with pine oil as frother. A multiple collector dosage is required for effective flotation of non-sulphide copper phases associated fayalite and alkyl hydroxamate is identified as one of the effective collector for non-sulphide minerals. The copper recovery can be enhanced by 7-10% with a combination of collectors as compared to conventional sulphide flotation using only xanthate type collectors. Extensive exploration for uranium metal by the Department of Atomic Energy in India led to the discovery of new carbonate host rock uranium deposits Tummalapalle and Gogi, which are located in southern part of India. Alkaline leaching at elevated temperature and pressure using autoclave is the central unit process in the overall strategy for extraction of uranium from these new ore deposits. Autoclave leaching is affected largely by intrinsic nature of the ore and by the process variables and the equipment settings. In order to understand such a complex process and also to be able to predict the process performance under randomly (ore grade, uranium mineralogy, gangue mineralogy etc.) and consciously perturbed variable settings (partial pressure of oxygen, temperature, concentration of leachant, stirring speed and time), sound and robust mathematical models are needed with analytical and/or numerical solutions. Present investigation attempts to develop a variant of kinetic correlation based on shrinking core model for batch alkaline leaching process in an autoclave. The leaching model incorporates particle size distribution according to popular Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation, rather than assuming a single mean size for all the particles participating in the leaching reaction. Kinetic experimental data generated in autoclave leaching of Gogi uranium ore was used to evaluate various constants of the model developed. The ore sample used for experiments assayed 0.21 per cent U3O8. The partial pressure of oxygen was varied between 0.15 to 6.5 atm, temperature from 343 K to 438 K, concentration of sodium carbonate leachant in the range 0.47 g mol/L to 0.94 g mol/L, and the stirring speed from 573 rev/min to 900 rev/min in the experiments. The goodness of fit of the leaching process model is found to be >0.95. Morphological studies carried out on leached and unleached particulate matter using Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X ray analyses are included in the present study.

Theoretical study of the behavior of grinding medium presented by TBP (tetraballpebs) was conducted by computer modeling of the position of grinding medium at different speeds and different drum fill factor. For the modeling were used known equations of motion derived for the ball load. Algorithm was created by SolidWorks software, allowing determination of center of gravity of the load in the mill and energy for grinding. These results were compared with similar results obtained by ball grinding medium. The capabilities of both grinding media are demonstrated by graphics under the following conditions: 1.Equal dimensions of the experimental model of the mill; 2.Equal mass of the grinding loads; 3.Comparison of grinding bodies with the same number, mass and density. Sedimentary deposits such as sandstone are formed by the aggregation of cemented sand grains. Phosphates and laterite present similar aggregation of mineral grains. Grains and cement have different mineralogy and chemical characteristics. During size reduction through crushing or coarse grinding, the rocks are crumbled. Mineral grains and cement are then liberated, and the produced size distribution reflects their ?natural size distribution?. Mathematical modelling of these concomitant effects of crumbling and mineral liberation necessitates a specific material description and the adaptation of the commonly used theories of breakage kinetics and population balance. The coarse particles are mainly agglomerates made of mineral grains and cement particles whereas the fine particles are grains and cement with a natural grain size distribution. The population balance between the different particle size and particle types during size reduction takes into account the breakage rate and the progeny size distribution. The breakage rate can be described by a simple probability function or by a first order kinetics whereas the progeny size distribution is described by a breakage matrix. The model proposed here considers that the agglomerates will produce other agglomerated particles, liberated grains and cement particles; the two latter having their natural size distribution. The liberated grains and cement particles are subject to size reduction and follow the most commonly used theory of breakage. The present paper describes the theoretical approach of the concomitant crumbling and liberation effects. The application to a mathematical model for the cone crusher is presented. It is now common to have archival history of thousands of sensors sampled every second over long time. Yet we frequently have process engineers complain:??.We are drowning in data but starving for information??. How can these rich data sets be put to use? This paper addresses the issue of information and knowledge extraction from data with emphasis on process and performance monitoring including fault detection and isolation. Most of the major plant, factory, process, equipment and tool disruptions are avoidable, and yet preventable fault detection and diagnosis strategies are not the norm in most industries. It is not uncommon to see simple and preventable faults disrupt the operation of an entire integrated manufacturing facility. For example, faults such as malfunctioning sensors or actuators, inoperative alarm systems, poor controller tuning or configuration can render the most sophisticated control systems useless. Such disruptions can cost in the excess of $1 million per day and on the average they rob the plant of 7% of its annual capacity. Over the last decade the fields of multivariate statistics and data visualization and analysis methods have merged to develop powerful sensing and condition-based monitoring systems for predictive fault detection and diagnosis.These methods rely on the notion of sensor fusion whereby data from many sensors or units are combined with process information, such as physical connectivity of process units, to give a holistic picture of health of an integrated plant. Such methods are at a stage where these strategies are being implemented for off-line and on-line deployment. The Sydvaranger magnetite mine was shut down in 1996 due to low iron ore prices. It was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The Sydvaranger magnetite is free of harmful elements and should therefore be sold on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2 % SiO2. In the old plant, this grade was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred as collector because it could be used in process water from the sea. The use of amine has been restricted by the Norwegian pollution authorities during the time the mine was shut down. Test work to replace cationic with anionic flotation is therefore done. Research on activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by basic research in the period from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under simplified laboratory conditions. This old research has now been followed up from a practical/empirical point of view. The basic work was mainly done on quartz and iron minerals only. In this case, an actual feed containing a number of minerals common in iron ores is used, in order to demonstrate that a commercial process is possible. Calcium activation is shown to work excellently but requires too high pH to be environmentally and economically attractive. Magnesium activation is a more difficult process, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+, which was shown to be the activator, is about 100 times lower than the alternative CaOH+. Flotation success depends partly upon the ore, some amphibole minerals are more difficult to float than pure quartz. Ordinary batch flotation test work is time consuming. A South African microflotation test cell has shown promise, because work can be focused upon flotation of the more critical coarser fractions of the Sydvaranger ore. Column flotation has now gained wide application in the recovery of various minerals. The performance of the flotation device depends on the mixing characteristics of the phases inside the devices. In this work, quality of mixing in a flotation column has been analyzed by using information entropy theory. Empirical models have been developed for flotation column with the parameters which affect the quality of mixing. The efficiency of the particle separation in the flotation column has been enunciated based on the quality of mixing. The present analysis on the quality of mixing in flotation column may give insight into a further understanding and modeling of flotation devices in industrial applications.

An albitization granite type tantalum-niobium ore from Jiangxi Province, China was taken as the research object in this paper. The main valuable minerals in this ore are tantalite-columbite and uranmicrolite, and the minerals that can be comprehensively recovered include cassiterite, sulfide minerals, topaz, zinnwaldite, and quartz-feldspar. Based on the research results of process mineralogy, the roughing process of gravity separation for coarse particles combined with flotation for fine particles is proposed. The combined cleaning process of flotation-gravity-magnetic-electric-hydrometallurgical separation is adopted for the rough concentrate of gravity separation while the combined cleaning process of gravity-flotation- hydrometallurgical separation is adopted for the rough concentrate of flotation. High intensity magnetic separation is used to separate and recover zinnwaldite and quartz-feldspar from gravity tailings. By mineral processing for the crude ore containing (TaNb)cassiterite concentrate is 0.0003% with a grade of Sn 63.22% and a recovery of Sn 47.42% while the yield of sulfide concentrate is 0.0783% with a grade of Pb 33.15% and Zn 27.09% which can be separated to get lead and zinc concentrate respectively. The yield of topaz concentrate is 0.1545% and the topaz mainly distributed in the size range of -0.4+0.074mm, which can be made into abrasive products of different particle sizes after classification.
