In recent years, the damping capacity of metals has come to be recognized as an important index of certain types of structural change. In a number of instances, this property has proved to be particularly sensitive, but insufficient work has been done to permit a general interpretation. There is considerable question at the present time as to just what factors are responsible for the internal dissipation of energy when a metal is carried through a cycle of stress, and these factors must be ascertained if the value of the damping method as a metallurgical tool is to be determined. Since internal stresses are among the chief causes of dissipation of internal energy, or damping capacity, it was thought that a study of the changes in damping during the recovery and recrystalliza-tion of a cold-worked metal might throw some light upon the subject, particularly if the damping changes were correlated with other properties that are better understood. Probably more work has been done on the recrystallization phenomena of alpha brass than on any other metal, so this was chosen as the material for the present investigation. Damping measurements on brass have been made by Förster and Köster.1 They showed that the annealing of a brass that had been cold-drawn to 50 per cent reduction produced a rapid fall in the damping, a flat minimum occurring at approximately the temperature of recrystallization. The damping remained at a low value until grain growth was well under way and then it increased rapidly with increasing grain size. Köster and Rosenthal2 continued the work in greater detail. They pointed out that the damping decrease does not correspond to the hardness drop but occurs at a lower temperature, suggesting that the relief or redistribution of internal stresses has a large effect while the actual recrystallization effect is small. They also show the increase in damping at the higher annealing temperatures. Their curves are reproduced in Fig. 1.

During the course of preparation of crystals of alpha brass for an investigation of their creep characteristics, a number of critically oriented crystals were produced. In each of these specimens, Po, the specimen axis, lay near some important crystallographic direction or on or near the border of two possible slip systems. Because of the unusual nature of their orientations, it was considered of interest to deform these specimcns in simple tension and to study orientation changes and any unusual occurrences, different from what would be expected for specimens ill which only one slip system had distinctly the highest maximum resolved shear stress. Choice of actual operating slip system in a crystal offering an immediate possibility of two slip systems would be expected to be due to chance., defeet, or some inhomogeneity. Even in an ideally perfect crystal so oriented, the natural oscillations of the atoms about their lattice positions would give rise to a condition wherein one slip system would be farored over the other at the critical shear stress. In the large, nonperfeet crystals of the present investigation, slip on both systems, but in different portions of the specimen, might occasionally be expected. Determination of Orientation and Operating Slip System Orientations of specimens before and after deformation were determined by Greninger&apos;s back-reflection Laue method.&apos; Elam2 has shown that deformation of alpha brass crystals proeceds as with crystals of aluminum and of copper; that is, the slip plane is a {111) plane and the slip direction is a <110> direction. There are, however, four possible slip planes of {111) form and each plane has three possible slip directions, so that there is a, total of 12 possible slip systems in a face-centered cubic lattjce. The resultant embrittlement caused by the exposure of oxygen-bearing copper when hot and exposed to reducing gases has been the subject of many studies.&apos; Little attention, however, has been given to the possible embrittling effects due to atmospheres or conditions that under some circumstances might be the source of a reducing gas. At rather infrequent intervals there occur reports of copper becoming embrittled during normal annealing cycles in commercial steam-atmos-phered furnaces such as customarily are used for this operation. As might be expected, several other factors exist—such as oil, dirt on the wire, or in the furnace, or metallic surface contacts—that might produce reducing gases and be the source of the trouble. However, in consideration of the statement made by Ruder,2 it would seem that under some conditions steam itself might prove to be the source of trouble. A consideration of the amount of the dissociation of water vapor up to temperatures of the melting point of copper shows that3 the amount of hydrogen that could come from this source is far too minute to account for any embrittlement. What such information does not tell is what will happen at the surface of copper when subjected to steam at elevated temperatures, for entirely different conditions may persist, which would account for Ruder&apos;s observation. Furthermore, there are no data as to what might happen at the surfaces of other materials present, the resultant of which might affect the condition of the copper present. For this reason, it was decided to make a series of experiments comparable to those previously conducted by the writer,&apos; which would clarify the effect of the steam on copper, and in copper in the presence of steel. Material The material used in these experiments was tough-pitch copper wire of rectangular cross section, about % in. thick, picked at random from the regular factory production of material used for windings, etc., in the electrical industry. The processes involved in turning a set of seismograph records into a geological structure map may be divided into three classes; (1) picking reflections on the records, to be used for the computations; (2) determining the basis on which the computations should be made in order to arrive at correct results; (3) making the necessary computations and plotting sections and maps. The first is usually done by the crew chief, or at least checked by him. The computing system usually originates in the head office, occasional consultations with the party chief providing modifications as necessary to meet special conditions. The computations and plotting are done by the party computer, with possibly one or two assistants if the calculations require much time. Picking the Rejleclions Marking of the reflections on the records is perhaps the most important step and the one most likely to determine the reliability of the final results. Making the "picks" is important because most of the problems that come up in practical work are connected with the problem of what can be done with poor records. The lack of any definite criteria by which to judge what are good and usable reflections is at the bottom of the difficulty. Give the same set of records to several people to mark and they will probably come out with a variation in the number of reflections per record that are deemed usable. With good records the correct picks are obvious to all, but with poor records experience seems to be the only reliable guide as to what picks are reliable and what are merely born of imagination and desperation. Experience in marking records and seeing how the structures eventually check out is more important than training in physics or geology. Different types of equipment and shooting methods may produce records quite different in appearance, from the same territory, and the computer can do his best work with records of a type on which he has had considerable experience, and has learned the limitations and shortcomings as well as the virtues of the data with which he is working. Reflections may be picked for dips only, in which case the particular reflection picked is not recognizable with certainty on records from any other spread. The geophysicist is interested greatly in the resistivities of different formations or parts of the earth&apos;s crust; sometimes he is interested in a single figure in the nature of an average, or what may be called the effective resistivity, of all the formations or parts of the crust at a given location to a certain depth. Conversely, the engineer whose work is concerned with the coordination of power and communication lines in such a manner as to avoid electrical interference between these two types of facilities is concerned very much with this effective resistivity; to a lesser extent he is interested in the resistivities of individual formations. In connection with his work the coordination engineer often estimates the effective resistivity of the earth from measurements of the mutual impedances of lines; in other instances he derives from measurements of a different type the resistivities of different layers of the crust and synthesizes these to obtain an estimate of the effective resistivity. In connection with problems concerning the coordination of power and telephone lines, measurements from which earth resistivities can be estimated have been made at many points in the United States by the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. and its associated companies, in cooperation with various power companies and with railroad companies having electrified sections of line. Other such measurements have been made by the Joint Subcommittee on Development and Research of the Edison Electric Institute and the Bell Telephone System. A study has been made of the correlation of these data with the ages and types of materials of the strata of the earth&apos;s crust at each of the test locations. The purpose of this study has been primarily to provide information to assist in predicting the order of magnitude of effective resistivities to be used in the preliminary consideration of problems concerned with the coordination of power and communication lines. To make the results of such a study most useful, it is essential that the geological data to be secured when such a prediction is wanted be readily obtainable. Considerable attention has been directed in recent years to methods of electric prospecting other than the conventional direct-current techniques. It has been extensively recognized that electrical data of a more general nature than that possible by direct-current methods might be useful in geophysical studies. To this end, a number of different types of electric currents have been employed, such as single-frequency alternating currents, square-topped periodic current waves,4 periodic surges of a less specific nature,s and suddenly applied direct current.1,2 Yet, to the author&apos;s knowledge, little analysis of these different types of driving currents has been made from the standpoint of network theory to determine just what typc of currents would give the most useful data, and, most important of all, to determine the relation of the data taken by one method to those of another. Without touching on the actual theoretical problem of how currents flow in the earth under specified boundary conditions, some very useful information can be obtained from the study of the fundamental integral equations of electrical networks, throwing light on the problem not ordinarily appreciated by the field worker. Some manipulation of the standard network equations will be made, with the sole purpose in mind of developing expressions leading to practical results. Suppose that four points in the earth have been located and it is wished to obtain the most useful type of electrical data by inserting current into two of them and measuring the potential developed between the other two. The first problem that arises is that of which pair of the four shall be chosen as current grounds. In the direct-current case, where only steady potentials are measured, the selection is of little consequence, but as soon as currents varying with time are used at the current grounds, a new effeet arises. The fact that a varying current is flowing in the current-carrying conductor between the current grounds means that magnetic and electric fields varying with time will be produced

Applied geophysics is the youngest child of that old branch of learning that has been known from Aristotle&apos;s time as physics—the constitution and laws of nature. The mother science, with the help of mathematics, has given birth to many children, who, on becoming of age in the scientific sense, wedded more practical applications which later became known as electrical engineering, physical chemistry and acoustical engineering. Some vigorous sons still retain the family name, among which the most recent to take its place as a division of science is geophysics, which deals with the physics of the earth. Geophysics in its broad sense has many departments—meteorology, oceanography and seismology, to mention only three. Within the past 20 years, however, a special interest has arisen in the application of physical principles to problems in geology, mining and civil engineering, with the consequent rapid growth of what has now been called "applied geophysics." Applied geophysics in this narrower sense is the application of experimental and theoretical physics to determine variations and discontinuities in underground structures that cannot be ascertained from surface inspection. It seems evident, then, that the physics department is the natural place in a university where the principles and methods involved should be taught and developed, for the physicist will also have had the requisite training in mathematics that the proper understanding of many methods now used will require. A knowledge of the procedure and principles, however, is not sufficient for the successful application of geophysical methods. One may know the dynamics of flight of golf balls and of impact and yet not play a par game of golf! The proper selection and use of the right club to suit the circumstances of the lay of the ball and an acquaintance with the possibilities and limitations of the strokes as well as the practical execution of the play is essential to a successful game. So, also, in the application of geophysical methods, it is important for the geophysicist to use the best device under the conditions presented, to know the limitations of the conclusions deduced from his physical measurements and to make the proper interpretation of the results. A knowledge of geology will be of great aid in coming to the correct con-

by their overdogmatic picture of geology and their resulting drastic oversimplification and idealization of geologic features. I am in hearty disagreement with the recommendation that geophysics should be done by cooperative work between a geologist and a geophysi-cist. That arrangement would be comparable to doing petrography by having a physicist at the microscope and a geologist sitting by his side. The interpretation of the geological significance of geophysical data can be done efficiently only by a physicist who has become also a good geologist or by a geologist who is also a good geophysicist. Less Well-trained Men The rank and file, composing perhaps two-thirds of the personnel of exploratory geophysics, is not, and should not be, composed of highly trained men. The routine, stereotyped character of the work and the impossibility of promotion of more than a few from these lower ranks even under the best circumstances justify companies in filling the bulk of these rank and file positions with men having only a bachelor&apos;s degree at the most. There can be a wide range of training for such positions, although certain lines of study are preferred for certain kinds of work, and different employers have different preferences. For work in gravitational and magnetic prospecting, first preference will be for men having geological training and second for men with civil engineering training. In seismic work, men with geological training are preferred by some employers for computers; physicists, electrical engineers and all whose technical education has covered radio circuits are preferred for the other technical positions. Collegiate training in geophysical prospecting brings no preference and by many employers is given a slightly inferior rating. One large company seldom hires men who have just graduated with a major in geophysical prospecting. This prejudice is based on the reasoning that much of what is learned in college is obsolete or obsolescent, that most of the techniques learned in college will have to be unlearned, because different from those used by the employing company, and that in the long run additional courses in basic physics, mathematics and geology are of more value to a man than the courses on geophysical prospecting. In discussing the problem of abnormal magnetic polarization, C. A. Heilandl† emphasized the unfortunate fact that our knowledge of the geological and physical conditions relating to such occurrences is very limited and that a more detailed insight into their physical causes would be extremely valuable for interpreting measured anomalies. He also pointed out that to arrive at quantitative physical formulas that would express the conditions that cause abnormal polarization many more occurrences of the kind would have to be recorded. The first part of this paper is a contribution to such descriptions. Abnormal Magnetic Polarization in South Africa The occurrence was mapped in the course of a magnetometric survey carried out about 70 miles to the east of Johannesburg and east of the Witwatersrand gold field, for the purpose of detecting the position of the suboutcrop of certain magnetite-bearing shales that occur in the lower portion of the Witwatersrand system of sediments, shales whose position in section in relation to the ore-bearing members of the same system of sediments are known. In this case the shales are covered by younger strata several hundred feet thick. Lines of magnetometric traverse were run at right angles to the strike for a strongly magnetic body. This body is a shale zone in the Witwatersrand sediments and has a strike of N.20°E. (magnetic) and dips 15" to the east. The field work was done by a vertical intensity field balance (A. Schmidt principle). The plotting is done in such a way that the sign is reversed from that usually employed in the northern hemisphere, so that a positive profile is obtained in abnormal cases while the same conditions in the northern hemisphere would give a negative one. This method of recording should be kept in mind in reading what follows.

This report3/ gives the reconnaissance of a reconnaissance of the mining districts in Churchill County, Nev., made in the fall of 1938 and spring of 1938 All of the mining districts in the county were visited, but no attempt has been made to include all the mines and prospects within the area; inclusion or omission of a property in this paper has no bearing on its merits, The report gives the situation of the various districts, mineral production, and ownership of properties; describes the ore deposit, mines, and prospects; contains information on past and current activity; and includes other data likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. The various district, were named when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. When established, the districts embraced large areas n without well- defined borders, so that the names have little geographical significance.

THE present era of exploitation of the Little Long Lac and Sturgeon River areas commenced in 1925, when Beardmore Gold Mines started development of what is now the property of Northern Empire Mines. A shaft was sunk in 1927-28 and a very limited amount of underground work was carried out, following which the property was shut down. It remained idle until 1932, when Empire Star Mines, a Delaware Company, optioned the property. This Company formed the Northern Empire Mines Company, Limited, to operate the mine, and immediately instigated an aggressive programme of surface and underground development. By the summer of 1933, sufficient ore was indicated to justify the installation of a small mill. The decision was also reached to bring in electric power. A power-line was built from Hydro, the Ontario Power Commission&apos;s development on the Nipigon river, to the mine, a distance of approximately 50 miles. This work was entirely financed by Northern Empire Mines. Mill construction was commenced in October, 1933, and completed by March, 1934, thus making this mine the first producer in this district.

During the 9 years ended December 31, 1938, 188 fatalities resulted from preventable accidents in and around the coal mines of Indiana; 173 of these occurred at underground mines and 15 at stripping or open-cut operations. In addition, there may have been other unrecorded fatalities during this period. The two organizations receiving notice of accidental deaths at coal mines in this State are the Division of Mines and Mining and the Indiana Industrial Commission. Only deaths occurring at underground mines employing 10 or more men are reported to the former, as neither strip mines nor underground mines employing fewer than 10 men cone within the purview of the Indiana mining law. The mine inspectors have no Jurisdiction over this latter group of mines and do not inspect them. Fatalities at small "wagon" mines and open-cut operations are supposed to be reported to the Industrial Commission; however, in many instances deaths at small mines are not reported, the only record being a death certificate filed with the county or corporation health officer. Thus, many deaths in small mines escape attention, especially when the victim succumbs some time after the injury was received. The data presented here on fatalities in Indiana, during the past 5 years include several instances in which the only record available is a death certificate; possibly others have been overlooked. From 1934 to 1937 the fatality record was progressively worse, that of the larger underground mines in 1937 being more than twice the average for these mines for the previous 4 years and only slightly less than twice the average for all mines, including open-cut operations. The increase in deaths during 1937 was due to two explosions, with 20 fatalities in one and 2 in the other. The number of deaths in the larger underground mines was considerably less in 1938 than in the previous 4 years, but there was no improvement in the number of fatalities at the small mines, or at open-cut mines.

BRUCITE associated with highly metamorphosed Precambrian limestone was discovered in the vicinity of Rutherglen in northern Ontario by the writer during field work on the limestones of that district in 1937, and later was identified in similar limestone at Bryson and Wakefield, Quebec. The brucite occurs as granules disseminated through the limestone (Figure 1) and comprises from 20 to 35 per cent of the rock. Such rocks may be referred to as predazzites or pencatites, depending on the proportions of the constituent minerals. In this paper, however, the general term brucitic limestone is used to designate limestone containing brucite. In none of the deposits does the magnesia content of the rock approach that of magnesite, and in the deposits near Bryson and Wakefield the magnesia content is only that of dolomite. Therefore, without some method of concentrating the brucite, the deposits would be of little or no more value as a source of magnesia than is ordinary pure dolomite, which is abundant in many parts of Canada. Investigations in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines have, however, resulted in the development of a method whereby, from certain of the deposits, pure calcined brucite, or magnesia, in granular form can be obtained, apparently at a cost that will enable it to compete in eastern Canada with imported magnesia. The granular magnesia so obtained appears to be highly suitable for use in basic refractories, for making magnesium metal, and for various other purposes for which magnesia is commonly used. Prospecting in the neighbourhoods of the original discoveries has resulted in a number of other deposits being found in each of the three areas, and there is now apparently available s1.dficient brucitic limestone of a grade that will lend itself to commercial exploitation to supply for many years a large part of the present and prospective Canadian market for magnesia and its products. Furthermore, it is expected that additional deposits will be discovered as prospectors and others become more familiar with the appearance of brucitic limestone.

In 1939, American industry got, off to a poor start, slowed down further during the first quarter, quickened after May, speeded up still more when war broke out again in Europe, and ended the year at a pace close to an all-time record. The average index of general business activity for the entire year (105) was well ahead of that for 1938 (86), failed to equal that of 1937 (110), and fell behind the average for 1929 (119) by a wide margin. This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs. It describes briefly the manner in which slusher hoists and scrapers are used in connection with clock-caving methods at the Emma Nevada mine of the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation, Kimberly, Nev. Kimberly is in the Robinson mining district, White Pine County, 7 miles west of Ely. The district is served by the Nevada Northern -Railroad, which branches from the main line of the Southern Pacific at Wells, Nev., 140 miles north, Paved U. S. Highway 50 from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Reno, Nev., passes through Ely. The altitude at the collar of the Emma Nevada shaft is 7117 feet. The surrounding hills are covered with a sparse growth of juniper, pinon, and mountain mahogany.

One of the best present-day yardsticks of the material welfare of a nation is its consumption of minerals, The United States, with only 7 percent of the world population, consumes 45 percent of the world wealth, pays the highest real wages, has the shortest working hours, and numbers the largest percentages of home owners among its population, and at the same time its per-capita consumption of minerals is far greater than that of any other nation. In 1937, British India, with roughly twice the population of the United States, used less than 2 percent as much lead, 4 percent as muck zinc, and 13 percent as much copper; even in Europe, which has three times our population and where war preparations have greatly expanded the normal needs of peaceful industries, the aggregate consumption of metals and industrial minerals other than lignite is less than the total for the United States alone. The march of civilization passed from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age before the dawn of history. It may be questioned whether man or monkey first threw stones at an enemy, but only man could have fashioned rough stones into weapons. Eoliths rudely shaped by apelike men are believed by archaeologists to have antedated by hundreds of thousands of years the existence of our own human ancestors. The primitive people that followed the retreating Ice Cap northward in early quaternary period - at least a million years ago - were fairly adept in the shaping of flints and even used a little copper. The Bronze Age, so-called, superseded the Stone Age when, around 8,000 B. C., the news spread that chunk s of natural copper could be pounded into better weapons or cutting implements than ever could be made by chipping stones. The Bronze Age gave place to the Iron Age about 1,000 B, C., and though students of modern history may speak of the Coal Age, the Petroleum Age, and the Automobile Age, and so on, these ages have all been crowded into a brief century and a half. The truth is that we still are in the Iron Age, unless perhaps we choose to call it the Age of Many Metals.

For some years past the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain has been making an intensive search for. materials that would be more efficient than rock dust and that could replace it wholly or in part as a moans of preventing the prorogation of coal-dust explosions in mines5/ In the course of this work several rock ducts and numerous inorganic compounds were tested. The results place incombustible substances in two main groups; (1) Those whose effect in suppressing the combustion of coal dust is proportional to their capacity for absorbing heat, and (2) those that shoo much higher effectiveness than would be expected from their heat capacity. The first group includes several inorganic compounds and materials commonly ground for use as rock dust, such as shale, gypsum, and limestone. Outstanding examples of the second group are compounds of the halogens6/ with the alkali metals,7/ especially potasium and sodium8/. British investigators term those salts "inhibitors" because it is assumed that their presence has a hindering or inhibiting effect on one or more of the chemical reactions that together constitute combustion. In other words, the action of an inhibitor is postulated as chemical rather than physical; theoretically, the effect is to prevent liberation of energy instead of to absorb energy already liberated.

[In the examination of bentonitic clay suspensions used for oil-well drilling fluids3/ (and for other purposes, such as a core binder for foundry sand) it is important to have comparative tests for evaluating them. A satisfactory clay for these and other purposes should have the property of forming what is commonly called a "gel," but the measurement of this property has been a real problem. To date the solution has not been satisfactory, and some of the difficulties are considered in, this, paper, which describes a simple form of instrument (identified as an eykometer) for measuring the yield point under hydrostatic conditions of non-Newtonian clay suspensions, including those muds that are thixotropic. An oil-well drilling mud serves several functions, many of which depend on the "gel" characteristics of the mud. Among the more important functions are: (a) To plaster the sides of the hole to prevent caving of the walls; (b) to prevent the loss of the circulating fluid out of the hole by seepage; (c) to carry sand and cuttings out of the hole to the surface as they are formed by the rotary drill; and (d) when circulation of the fluid stops for shut-down or other unavoidable cause, to hold the cuttings in suspension by the setting up of the gel, thereby avoiding the difficulties that result when these cuttings are allowed to fall through the fluid and pack at the bottom of the hole.]

PART I.-GASES IN INDUSTRY INTRODUCTION THE part played by gases in industry can be considered from at least four distinct viewpoints, viz: (1) As air to support combustion and life and do various kinds of work (2) As fuel, or as essential to certain chemical processes (3) As sources of danger from explosion or fire ( 4) As hazards to man&apos;s health The present paper deals with gases only insofar as they are sources of danger, or are hazards to health. It may be noted, however, that, in point of tonnage, air is one of the most important materials handled in any industrial plant. In the operations of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, for example, 138,000 tons of air are handled daily, the only material exceeding this figure being water. The United States Bureau of Mines has listed no fewer than seventy-four gases and vapours that, under certain conditions, may be considered as ex-plosive or dangerous (poisonous). Applied geophysics is the youngest child of that old branch of learning that has been known from Aristotle&apos;s time as physics—the constitution and laws of nature. The mother science, with the help of mathematics, has given birth to many children, who, on becoming of age in the scientific sense, wedded more practical applications which later became known as electrical engineering, physical chemistry and acoustical engineering. Some vigorous sons still retain the family name, among which the most recent to take its place as a division of science is geophysics, which deals with the physics of the earth. Geophysics in its broad sense has many departments—meteorology, oceanography and seismology, to mention only three. Within the past 20 years, however, a special interest has arisen in the application of physical principles to problems in geology, mining and civil engineering, with the consequent rapid growth of what has now been called "applied geophysics." Applied geophysics in this narrower sense is the application of experimental and theoretical physics to determine variations and discontinuities in underground structures that cannot be ascertained from surface inspection. It seems evident, then, that the physics department is the natural place in a university where the principles and methods involved should be taught and developed, for the physicist will also have had the requisite training in mathematics that the proper understanding of many methods now used will require. A knowledge of the procedure and principles, however, is not sufficient for the successful application of geophysical methods. One may know the dynamics of flight of golf balls and of impact and yet not play a par game of golf! The proper selection and use of the right club to suit the circumstances of the lay of the ball and an acquaintance with the possibilities and limitations of the strokes as well as the practical execution of the play is essential to a successful game. So, also, in the application of geophysical methods, it is important for the geophysicist to use the best device under the conditions presented, to know the limitations of the conclusions deduced from his physical measurements and to make the proper interpretation of the results.
