Introduction The property of Siscoe Gold Mines, Limited, is located on an island of three hundred and forty acres in lake Kienawisik, about fifty-two miles east of Noranda and forty-three miles south of Amos, Quebec. Lake Kienawisik is a part of the Harricanaw drainage system and is crossed by the main line of the Canadian National railway at Amos. This waterway is navigable for boats with a draught of six to eight feet. Diesel engines have been the source of power at the property since milling operations were commenced in January, 1929. The power plant as first designed and built was for a milling capacity of 100 tons. Two Polar-Atlas units, each of 200 h. p., comprised the original installation. With the growth of the 'mine, more engines were added until, at the present time, there is installed at the Siscoe what is rated the largest Diesel plant at any mining property in Canada. Definition of a Diesel 'The Diesel engine is an internal combustion engine which works with liquid fuel introduced after, and independently of, the air charge at a time when communication between the cylinder and the outside atmosphere is cut off, and which ignites the fuel by compression-beat and stored combustion-heat unassisted by heat sources outside the cylinder itself while the engine is in stable operating condition"(1).

Introduction The subject matter of this paper will be treated under two heads: (1) experimental work and the development of the purification system, and (2) the operation of the commercial plant. During 1927-28, a two-ton slag-retreating plant was in operation at the smelter for experimental purposes. Details of this operation and of the commercial plant are presented in a paper by G. E. Murray, read before the Annual General Meeting of the Institute in April, 1933 (1). A point which has considerable bearing on the subject of the present paper, and which was not emphasized by Mr. Murray, is the concentration of volatile impurities in the zinc oxide fume produced. The result of the operation of the slag fuming furnace is largely to confine in a closed circuit all the minor constituents of the Sullivan concentrates, both lead and zinc. They pass into the feed of the zinc fuming furnace, with the result that all impurities which volatilize-such as arsenic, antimony, tin, fluorine, etc.-report in the zinc oxide product. The accompanying condensed flow-sheet (Figure 1) will illustrate this. The only outlet for impurities which is not shown is the small tonnage which passes the Cottrell plants. The flow-sheet would indicate the possibility of building up a prohibitive concentration of cathodic impurities in the oxide leaching plant feed. However, after three years' continuous operation this has not occurred. Should this condition arise at some future date, discard of some tonnage of blast furnace slag is indicated. In Mr. Murray's paper, the much greater flexibility of blast furnace operation, due to the slag fuming furnace, is stressed, particularly as to the lead content of the slag. The requirements of our lead refinery call for a bullion containing about 0.70 percent antimony.

During the 5-year period 1906-10 inclusive, 84 major disasters (a major disaster being one in which 5 or more lives are lost) occurred in the coal mines of the United States, or an average of 17 per year, and the total number of fatalities from coal-mine gas and dust explosions (major plus minor) for the 5 years aggregated 2,338 or 477.6 per year. The monotonous continuance of coal-mine disasters month by month aroused the people of the United States to such an extent that it was felt necessary for the Federal Government to try to do something looking to the avoidance of the admittedly excessive loss of life in our coal mines, and this was one of the deciding factors in the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mires in 1910. That results have been obtained in this particular cause of coal-mine accidents may be seen from the fact that for the year 1933 but one major explosion disaster occurred in the coal mines of then united States and the total number killed in that disaster was 7. Unquestionably the coal-mining industry through use of oaf or mining practices and aided by the various kinds of work of the Bureau of Mines looking to the prevention of mine fires and explosions is in large part responsible for this very creditable change. If the gas and dust explosion fatality rate of 1.059 per million tons of coal produced during the period 1906-10 inclusive had continued to the first of January 1934, instead of the 6,373 deaths which actually occurred due to gas and dust explosions, there would have been 13,480. Hence, during the 23 years existence of the Bureau of Mines there has apparently been a saving of about 7,102 probable deaths, or an average of more than 300 per year, from gas and dust explosions as against the number which would have occurred had the 1.059 gas and dust explosion fatality rate for the period 1906-10 continued. Thirty-nine persons were killed in all kinds of explosions (both major and minor) in the coal mines of the United States in 1933; if the 1.059 gas and dust fatality rate of the 1900-10 period had been in effect in 1933, about 400 persons world have been killed. Unquestionably, the various teachings of the U.S. Bureau of Mines looking to the avoidance of explosions and fires in mines have had a vital influence in reducing the number of explosions and fires and also in decreasing their destruction in case they occur.

Early in my term of office it was announced that my Presidential Address would make particular reference to the subject of Mine Taxation in Canada. With this purpose in view there was drafted a Balance Sheet and Earnings' Statement of a Gold Mining Company. This in turn was submitted to the Dominion Income Tax Authorities in Ottawa and to the Minister of. Mines of each of the several Provinces of Canada. The response to the invitation was not as complete as we had hoped it would be, but the figures that were obtained will be presented during the present meeting, and they constitute, I hope, a sufficient basis for extended study and additional enquiry during the year to come ( 1) . In the form letter that accompanied our request to have the submitted earnings assessed, I made the following assertion: "In this work we have three objects in mind. 1.--We will get direct comparison between the different Provinces in Canada. 2.-We will in this way educate our members concerning taxation as it affects the mining industry. 3.-We will publish the details as to how the assessment is calculated by each body, so that a Mine Manager in the most remote district will have a ready reference to guide him in his annual return to the taxing bodies. As things stand, there is no intention of making this a basis for a critical attack on the present rates assessed. It is intended as an authoritative summary of actual conditions as they presently exist".

WHEN Mr. Cameron, the President of the Santa Cruz Portland Cement Co., returned from Europe in 1929, he brought first-hand infor-mation about a very versatile type of hydraulic cement. It was not a new cement, many articles having been written about it in foreign journals, but in this country the record of this type of cement had been either neglected or minimized. Using local materials, and applying the information brought back by Mr. Cameron together with many data in numerous publications, the Santa Cruz Portland Cement Co. developed the Santa Cruz high-silica cement. This cement is manufactured by grinding with portland cement clinker a properly calcined mixture of siliceous material and lime. It has all the utility of portland cement, together with an increased resistance to the destructive action of many aggressive solutions. To explain the necessity for the development of a cement having these characteristics, the history of hydraulic binding materials may be reviewed briefly. The materials used as binding media by primitive people were mud, lime, gypsum and bitumin. Due to its utility, ease of preparation, and its common occurrence, lime was the most widely used. Fat lime, when used by itself or with an inert sand, hardened only on the outside surface, where the carbonate was formed by absorption of carbon dioxide from the air, while, the interior of the mortar remained soft. It was quite early discovered that the incorporation of proper siliceous material with the lime increased its ability to harden, and for this purpose various natural siliceous powders were used, such as puzzo-lana in Italy, trass in what is now Germany, and santorin in Greece. These powders reacted with the lime forming a permanent cement and rendered unnecessary the access of carbon dioxide to the mortar.

The Zwolle oil field of Sabine Parish, La., is different from most oil producing areas of the State in that the oil is obtained from marl and chalkrock formations. The thickness of the reservoir rocks averages 500 feet; but production is not continuous throughout this thickness, as the oil apparently is localized in vertical and nearly vertical solution cavities and channelways or in porous zones of limited horizontal extent. The nature of the oil accumulation has caused two outstanding peculiarities of the field: (1) About 60 percent of the tests drilled were dry holes and (2) there were many instances of well interference. Commercial production was discovered in November 1928, after 17 years of prospecting in and around the present limits of the area now developed which has a length of about 22 miles and a maximum width of 4 miles. The field had produced 10,266,896 barrels of oil to January 1, 1934. The oil ranges in gravity from 400 to 420 A.P.I.

Introduction As practised during the last two years at the Vipond Consolidated gold mine, mining geology has meant the application of geology to the problem of finding, developing, and mining ore. This article reviews the results attained in Vipond mining geology as thus defined. Most effort was directed toward clarifying and interpreting the tangible physical causes of vein and ore localizations, and in the following pages these questions are dealt with in considerable detail. Discernment of the influence of rock folding and deformation on the localization of veins, and of the influence of certain structures and rocks in or near carbonaceous zones on the localization of ore-bodies, have been the main practical results of the studies. Consideration of some of the geological features of the Porcupine area, and of the geology and mining experience of the principal producing mines, has helped toward a perspective of Vipond's ore-finding problems. These features are first discussed. The background and procedure for Vipond mining geology, and the major results of the geological mapping, are then summarized. Then follows a résumé of tangible factors that influenced vein, ore-body, and gold localizations; and, next, explanations of the facts ascertained. Because they were found of little utility, many fascinating problems, such as the origin and mode of emplacement of the veins and lodes(l), the ultimate source of the ore, and the physico-chemical and mechanical agencies affecting vein and ore formation, are treated cursorily or are neglected in these notes.

Introduction The property of Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Limited is situated at the northeastern end of Kirkland lake, Ontario. It lies immediately east of the Lake Shore mine, and about in the centre of the Kirkland Lake camp. The district is served by the Swastika-Rouyn branch of the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario railway, the town of Kirkland Lake being four miles northeast of Swastika, which is 63 miles north of Cobalt and 392 miles north of Toronto. The mine is developed by three shafts and has more than twenty-eight miles of underground workings. There are two main producing veins, which lie in a porphyry boss 1,350 feet wide. Milling started in May, 1921, and to-date (January, 1933) the mine has produced gold to the value of $21,770,183. Present production is at the rate of 800 tons of ore per day. For a description of the geology, reference may be made to the report by E. W. Todd on the Kirkland Lake Gold Area (1). Structure and Ore Deposits The two major productive veins on the Wright-Hargreaves property are known as the North vein and the South vein. In the vicinity of the shafts these veins are approximately 550 feet apart. A third vein, known as the Inclined vein, has been worked from its junction with the South vein at the 2,000-foot level to its intersection with the North vein at the 800-foot level. This inclined vein has to date been found only in the area east of the eastern major north-south fault. The main North vein and South vein have a general vertical dip, although local rolls and post-ore faults throw certain sections out of line. From the surface to 3,900 feet, the North vein is displaced south less than 200 feet, and the South vein at the same horizon is almost perpendicularly beneath the surface showings.

Meerschaum or sepiolite is employed principally in tobacco pipes and cigar and cigarette holders, although a few other uses of minor importance are Down. The unique value of a meerschaum pipe is derived from the owner's pleasure in watching the color deepen with smoking and in having the color "set" at the desired shade. The name "meerschaum" (German for "sea foam") is applied because the material, when pure and dry, will float on water. Owing to its resemblance to the porous, bonelike structure of the cuttlefish, or septa, it is also known as sepiolite. There are a few scattered deposits of meerschaum in. the United States which have yielded a small product ion, but the world's supply of the' material is obtained fined principally from Asia Minor, Meerschaum deposits near Eski-Shehir, Turkey, are said to have been worked 2,000 years ago, but commercial exploitation is a development of the last hundred years DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES Meerschaum is a hydrous magnesium silicate (H4Mg2Si3010) having the following theoretical analysis: Si02, 60.8 percent; MgO, 27.1 percent; H20, 12.1 percent. It is a soft. (H.2 - 2.5), fine-grained, earthy, white, gray, or yellow material. It is very light weight when pure (specific gravity, 1 to 2) and is highly absorbent. Because of its porosity the proportion of water present in the mineral is affected by the humidity'of the atmosphere. In a moist atmosphere the water content may be as much as 21.7 percent. Then wet the material is soft and somewhat plastic. When dried again it becomes lard and tough. The toughness is especially apparent in some forms that have a fibrous or leathery texture.

A knowledge of the mutual liquid solubility of zinc and lead is of importance in various phases of zinc metallurgy. The determination of this solubility has been the subject of numerous investigations, but unfortunately the results vary widely, particularly at higher temperatures, and it has been impossible to decide what data are most reliable. It was decided to investigate the matter and in view of the disagreement in the published results, it was felt necessary to take rather unusual precautions to insure the reliability of the data. For this reason determinations were made by four different methods, and the procedures of several of the previous investigators were duplicated. The previously used methods can be divided into two classes: methods involving freezing the entire melt and taking samples of the lead-rich and zine-rich phases in the solid state,l,2 and methods in which the samples are taken while the bath is liquid and at the desired temperature.3,4 Data obtained by methods involving freezing the entire melt show much lower solubility of lead in zinc than methods in which the liquid is sampled at temperature. The latter method was used by Spring and Romanoff5 and by Hass and Jellinek.6 The results of these two investigations are in agreement at temperatures near the melting point but at higher temperatures Hass and Jellinek find a higher mutual solubility. The low-temperature section of the zinc-lead equilibrium diagram is given by Peirce and Anderson.7 The diagram is based on the data of Hodge and Heyer,8 Arnemann,9 and Peirce.10

This Information Circular is an abstract of a manuscript which was completed in June 1933, by Mr. Hugh M. Wolflin, formerly of the U. S. Bur eau of Mines. This abstract has been prepared by Charles Will Wright for presentation at the February meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in New York. It has been necessary to omit many of the details and most of the cost data and tables, as well as the illustrations in the original manuscript. As the use of airplanes in mining developments is making such progress and as a publication on this subject to be of greatest value should include the most recent information, it is unfortunate that, due to a lack of printing funds, it has not been possible to publish this manuscript. The purposes of Mr. Wolflin's paper are: (1) To describe briefly what has been accomplished in some outstanding examples by the use of aircraft in the mining and petroleum industries, (2) To record costs, (3) To present available information and suggestions to assist in solving future air-transportation problems in the industries under consideration.

Introduction The pages that follow present a brief chronological survey of views which have been held, and of legislation enacted, for the regulation of the natural gas and oil industry in the Turner Valley field, especially as regards conservation of the natural gas. To provide a necessary background for an adequate understanding of the progress of events in western Canada, there is included also a compilation, from technical and legal authorities, of some of the more important measures which have been adopted for the regulation of the oil and gas fields of the United States, where these measures have had, or are likely to have, a bearing on the course of our domestic industry. Owing to exigencies of space, it has been possible to refer only to the most outstanding proposals and legislation, and to these in the briefest possible form. Although, so far as Canada is concerned, the data presented are restricted almost entirely to the Turner Valley field, it is the hope of the writer that the paper may prove of value for purposes of reference: for any similar gas and oil fields discovered in western Canada will certainly revive and intensify the problem of the proper steps to be taken for the conservation of the gas. Definition of 'Conservation The term conservation has been so misunderstood and misrepresented that, to many persons in Alberta, it means little more than closing-in wells. In the light of the definition of Charles E. Hughes, that 'True conservation of a raw material is its economical use', the subject of natural gas conservation is inseparably involved with the study of the function of the -gas and with the development of the principles of unit operation.

Introduction The financial statement of the hypothetical Gold Mining Company, which forms the background of this survey, was designed for the Institute with the express abject of having it assessed in respect to Profits by the several taxing bodies representing the Federal and Provincial Governments, which comprise the Dominion of Canada. On the completion of the figures, copies were sent to the several Ministers of Mines, accompanied by a request that they be submitted to their taxing authorities and assessed accordingly. The response, while it was not general, was very favourable, and at all times we were treated with the utmost courtesy and patience, and what has been set forth in the compilation bears the authentication of the various government officials who are immediately concerned with taxation. The data itself constitutes a fairly comprehensive digest of taxation as it directly applies to gold mining profits in Canada. The Hypothetical Balance-Sheet (See Exhibit A) In the balance-sheet schedules 1 and 2 (Exhibit A), income is divided between taxable and non-taxable classifications, and here it should be noted that the division contemplates only the assessment for Dominion income tax. The same applies to the factors of exchange and depletion. Therefore, in making comparisons, it is to be borne in mind that the set-up for assessment to the Provinces, that is, Manitoba and Alberta, will stand as if the gross non-operating income is taxable, with the reservations as shown in the notes below the schedules.

Prevention of coal-mine explosions depends largely upon thorough knowledge of the causes that initiate explosions. A review of coal-mine explosions in one geographical area when supplemented by nationwide data of similar nature, should serve as a guide for the adoption of measures for explosion prevention. Explosions in bituminous-coal mines of the United States during the 10 years ended December 31, 1932, ranked third in the causes of fatal accidents and constituted 16.1 percent of all fatal accidents in bituminous mines. Kentucky now ranks fourth in coal output in the coal-producing States of this country; a study of the coal-mine explosions in this state will be of definite interest locally among coal-mining people, as well as to those in the coal-mining industry who are concerned in preventing coal-mine explosions. This circular reviews gas and dust explosions in Kentucky coal mines to show their hazards, to point out the influence of certain factors in causing explosions, and to indicate the effectiveness of preventive measures.

When a new mine is opened, and often when an operating mine must adapt itself to physical or economic changes, a mining system must be selected in complete detail. In the past the plan chosen was usually the product of the local staff alone, however limited the training and experience of that staff might be, which often resulted in the introduction of methods that were familiar to the staff, but not so well suited to the conditions as others unknown to the local men. A new management, noting the difficulties with the existing layout, might make modifications or complete changes, so that many mines in their history have seen a whole series of mining systems, each somewhat laboriously grafted on to its predecessor. This should not be interpreted as a condemnation of the older staffs for sticking to the tried systems, such as open square-sets in the early days at the Homestake, because they knew it would work after a fashion, nor does the statement apply to the technically trained, and usually broadly experienced staffs of most present-day properties. The older miners did not have the variety of tools and methods, nor the present freedom of transfer of information as to what the other man is doing, and so did the best they could under the circumstances. Finally, the higher grade of the ores made the choice less vital. The ever-increasing need to mine low-grade orebodies, with a fixed or even lower price for the metal produced, has caused an increasing need for low-cost mining. In most new mines this has simplified the problem of selection by eliminating from consideration all of the high-cost systems, but it has also complicated the choice by the necessity for refinement in detail and a close adjustment of the plan selected to all the conditions at the property. In these low-cost problems any textbook division of mining systems as applied to "beds, veins or masses" avails little as a guide. It should be realized at the outset that to be successful under modern competitive conditions a system of mining must be worked out with elaborate detail, with careful time scheduling and control of the various elemental operations, and that after it is introduced it must be run with a large amount of technical direction.

The production of oil in Colombia during 1933 was at the lowest level since the completion of the loop of the Andian pipe line in 1927. The commercial production amounted to 13,157,641 bbl., all of which was produced from the Infantas and La Cira structures of the Tropical Oil Company. One of the most important developments was the discovery of what may be commercial production on the Colombian Petroleum (Gulf) Company's Tarra anticline on the Barco Concession in eastern Colombia near the Venezuelan border. This promises to become the second commercially productive area developed in Colombia and, perhaps, one of major importance. Applications made in 1931 for concessions under the new Colombian petroleum law were ratified covering the Putana application of the Tropical Oil Co. and others of local Colombian and French interests west of the Carare River. On none of these concessions has any development work yet been initiated. South American Gulf Oil Company The following information covering the activities of the South American Gulf Oil Co. was furnished by E. S. Bleecker, chief geologist of the company. Magdalena Valley.—No development work was undertaken during the year either on the Valenzuela property acquired from the Colombian Syndicate or on the lands obtained from the Leonard Oil Development Co. near the Sogamoso River. The Valenzuela property was relinquished and a portion of the material was removed therefrom to the Leonard property near by. Colombian Petroleum Co.—The Colombian Petroleum Co., controlled by the Gulf interests, pursued an active development campaign on the Chaux-Folsom or so-called Barco Concession in the Department of North Santander. The drilling of the first well was begun early in the year on the north Petrolea dome of the Tarra anticline and at 490 ft. a heavy flow of oil, gas and salt water was encountered. On blowing in unexpectedly, the well caught fire, and after being extinguished was controlled only by pumping large quantities of cement into the formation and plugging the well. In recent years an increasing amount of research work has been done on refractory materials for use in copper-smelting furnaces. A few of the larger refractories manufacturers have erected special research laboratories which are fully equipped to study the refractory problems of the smelter. A typical laboratory of this type was described in the January, 1929, issue of Mining and Metallurgy, in an article entitled "Methods of Research Newly Applied to Refractories," by W. F. Boericke. This particular laboratory is equipped for the manufacture of full-size refractory brick. It aims to study on a fairly large scale the behavior of various refractory raw materials and the effect of improved methods of manufacture. The refractories manufacturer has at his disposal the naturally occurring refractory oxides in various degrees of purity, mixed or combined with other oxides. In order to supply the copper smelter with a refractory brick that will permit the most economical operation of the smelting furnaces, it is necessary to have the optimum combination of a number of both physical and chemical properties in the brick. Unfortunately, nature has not provided any raw materials in which the perfect combination of these properties exists. It is, therefore, a problem for man's ingenuity to seek out the most desirable raw materials and develop methods of manufacture that give, in the resultant product, the necessary combination of properties in as full a measure as is possible. In the laboratory it is possible to carry out fairly broad experiments with this objective. It is first necessary to obtain and process the raw materials, then to manufacture them into brick and finally, to test these bricks under conditions designed to interpret or simulate in the laboratory the actual conditions in the smelting furnace. It is necessary for the research engineers to determine certain fundamental properties in the brick which may be subjected to laboratory measurements and to interpret these measurements in terms of brick performance in smelting-plant practice. Such procedure is not what might be called an exact, scientific one but it has been found that great progress can be made when these principles are applied. J. H. HEGINBOTHAM, a, metallurgist of the General Engineering Co., talked on "Current Milling Practice at Kirkland Lake," at the December meeting of the Utah Section. The ore is enough alike through the whole district so that some generalizations and comparisons may be made. The question as to whether or not the flotation process should be used in the flowsheet for extracting gold by cyanide solutions is still being vigorously debated, and it will seemingly need some years for a definite answer to be given. Most of the gold is either free, though much of it is finely dispersed in quartz, or occurs with pyrite. At times there may be 2 per cent of telluride compounds in the ore, but the amount of gold telluride present is small and has not been definitely established. It has been shown by Dr. Haultain and others that though gold tellurides may be so finely disseminated that it is necessary to grind the ore exceedingly fine, the compounds themselves are not difficultly soluble. (An increase in temperature helps to dissolve tellurides, and also to settle pulps.) It is likely that if the ore were ground through 400 mesh, practically all of the gold would be soluble. THE mines operated by the Compañia de Real del Monte y Pachuca, Pachuca, Mexico, are in two districts, the Pachuca, and Real del Monte. The principal area of mineralization is within a rectangle roughly 10 miles from east to west and 6 miles from north to south. It contains a number of veins from 2 to 20 ft. wide, which are exploited by this mining company. The scattered position of the producing mines led to the construction of two mills between 1906 and 1908; the Loreto mill, in Pachuca, averaged 2600 tons daily, and the Guerrero mill, in Real del Monte, milled 1270 tons daily. On Feb. 1, 1929, the management decided to enlarge the Loreto mill to take the combined tonnage of both mills at that time. This economic measure required the centralization of ore delivery, which would also afford a material saving in the cost of ore transport. The centralization would give the company the following advantages over the former system of operation: 1. Beneficiation at a single mill, closer to source of materials and supplies than the abandoned- Guerrero mill. The refinery is, also in the Loreto patio. 2. Ore delivery to surface at one point (San Juan Pachuca shaft) instead of at four. 3. Elimination of aerial tramways. To show what would be required to effect this centralization, it is necessary to describe the means by which the ore was delivered to the two mills, prior to centralization. The annealing or softening temperature of cold-worked copper is appreciably increased by almost unbelievably small amounts of silver. As indicated by some data in this paper, the softening temperature of high-conductivity, tough-pitch copper may be increased from 200" to 350" C. by the addition of only 15 oz. per ton (0.052 per cent) of that element. Because it has this higher annealing temperature as compared with the silver-free metal, silver-bearing copper finds considerable use in industry. For example, when hard-rolled copper is used in operations that involve soldering or tinning, silver-bearing copper insures against loss of strength, whereas silver-free copper becomes "dead soft." Yet—though several investigators, beginning with Caesar and Gernerl in 1916, have shown that small amounts of silver do definitely raise the softening temperature of copper—data are lacking on the problem: What is the specific influence of different amounts of silver on this temperature? It was to help in filling this gap in the knowledge of what might be termed "alloy coppers" that the data given herein were obtained. The softening of cold-worked copper depends, of course, on a number of factors, of which the composition of the material is only one. Other highly important factors are the degree to which the material is cold-worked and the time it is held at the annealing temperature. The method of cold working and the grain size of the metal produced are also significant. All these variables were taken into account in the investigation reported here, and the influence of silver on the electrical conductivity and on the working was also considered. The coppers used in the softening tests were Lake coppers melted and cast by the Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Co. The ires were fabricated by the Roebling Wire Co. and the sheets were rolled at the Battelle Memorial Institute. Partial analyses of some of the coppers are listed in Table 1, with their electrical conductivities.
