With the difficult economic challenges currently facing the steel industry, it is essential to perform a complete analysis when determining which rolls to purchase. A properly designed “Total Cost of Ownership” model can result in significant savings. This paper will review the costs associated with rolls in both Hot Strip and Cold Strip Mills. The multitude of factors that must be considered in performing a complete analysis for the roll purchasing process will be discussed. Models for both Hot Strip and Cold Mills will be presented. Examples where traditional analysis can lead to expensive, incorrect decisions will be presented.

O colamento de aço no molde (sticker) é uma anomalia de processo de lingotamento, que quando não detectado pelos modelos de prevenção de sticker, pode gerar breakout, o que significa perdas de produção significativas e aumentos de custos de manutenção para recuperação de componentes de segmentos e moldes, além dos riscos de segurança durante a limpeza do aço dentro da máquina e reprocessamento das placas para eliminação de defeitos superficiais. Outro aspecto a ser considerado é a ocorrência de falso alarme de sticker que também gera custos adicionais de produção, aumento de defeitos superficiais nas placas e powder slivers em laminado a quente devido a redução brusca da velocidade de lingotamento. Visando reduzir as ocorrências citadas acima e otimizar o processo de lingotamento, um novo sistema de detecção de sticker foi implantando, em AM Tubarão, nas 03 máquinas de lingotamento contínuo de placas, com uma configuração diferente da que que habitualmente é encontrada no mercado. O sistema é baseado em dois eixos: uma imagem termográfica do molde e um sistema de cálculo bastante avançado. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados deste processo e os ganhos obtidos quanto à redução de alarme falso de sticker.

O impacto de alguns elementos microligantes no tamanho de grão e nas propriedades mecânicas obtidas em diferentes rotas de processamento foi estudado neste trabalho para uma laminação de barras de aços especiais, special bar quality em inglês, SBQ. Esse estudo compreende as etapas iniciais da metodologia para o desenvolvimento de um modelo capaz de prever o comportamento da microestrutura e as propriedades mecânicas obtidas em processos de laminação de barras, que é pouco difundido para aços microligados. Foram testadas duas variações de aços microligados, com diferentes percentuais de Nb e Ti A rota de processamento mostrou um papel fundamental para a obtenção de melhores propriedades mecânicas nos aços testados – um aprimoramento considerável foi observado quando o material foi laminado seguido uma sequência termo-controlada.

Neste trabalho foi realizado um estudo comparativo entre as normas utilizadas para validação da solda aluminotérmica em trilhos do tipo Premium – Vignole dos modelos TR, utilizada em reparos de trilhos ferroviários. As normas a serem comparadas são: ABNT (Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas), AREMA (American Rail Way Engineering and Maintenance of Way Association) e a Norma Europeia (British Standard – Railway Aplication Track – Auminothermic Welding of Rails). Esta comparação será realizada para avaliar a relevância da variação dos parâmetros utilizados em cada uma das normas e quais fatores devem ser analisados em mais de uma norma para que não haja dúvidas se os trilhos estão aptos para serem colocados em operação. Através da realização dos ensaios mecânicos e metalúrgicos, sugeridos pelas normas, encontra-se defeitos causados por diversos fatores, tais como: processo de fabricação, mau uso dos trilhos, falhas operacionais na soldagem, de preenchimento, de solidificação entre outros. Utilizando-se deste conjunto de informações será possível validar as soldas aluminotérmicas testadas.

A utilização da pré-concentração de minerais é um processo já conhecido e que gera ganhos significativos em termos de aumento de teor de alimentação das usinas. Tal processo, porém, gera produtos de granulometria fina que dificultam, ou mesmo impossibilitam, a avaliação da abrasividade destes pelo ensaio de Bond, método mais utilizado atualmente na indústria mineral. O ensaio LCPC se apresenta, então, como uma alternativa para avaliação da abrasividade de materiais que se encontram em uma granulometria mais fina. O objetivo principal do trabalho apresentado neste artigo é avaliar o índice de abrasividade de minérios que passaram por um processo de pré-concentração e tal avaliação foi realizada por meio do LCPC. Foi possível observar que, para a amostra de cobre, a pré-concentração resultou em um concentrado de abrasividade menor que a alimentação, o que torna o processo vantajoso como uma etapa anterior ao beneficiamento propriamente dito. Já no caso do zinco, observou-se uma maior abrasividade no concentrado, o que sugere a concentração dos minerais abrasivos no concentrado, ao contrário do que seria esperado, que seria uma maior concentração de minerais mais abrasivos na ganga.

O objetivo deste trabalho é pesquisar sobre as principais falhas apresentadas por revestimentos anticorrosivos modernos comumente empregados para proteção interna de tanques de armazenamento de produtos petroquímicos e avaliar a capacidade da técnica de correntes parasitas para a inspeção não destrutiva deste material. Nesse contexto, as vantagens e limitações da técnica são analisadas. A aquisição de dados foi realizada considerando as propriedades isolantes dos revestimentos nas condições como aplicado e também após o envelhecimento. Amostras foram preparadas com defeitos controlados inseridos no substrato de aço carbono a fim de simular defeitos de corrosão localizada sob o revestimento. A detecção dos defeitos foi avaliada nas amostras com diferentes espessuras e também com a presença de óxido de ferro no interior dos defeitos a fim de simular áreas de corrosão localizada. Através da comparação entre os resultados obtidos no C-Scan original e após o processamento de imagem, foi possível observar uma melhoria significativa na eliminação dos falsos defeitos relacionados a variação da espessura inerente do revestimento pela limiarização multilevel. Também foi possível através do efeito do lift-off distinguir os defeitos reais e falsos defeitos. Nesse aspecto, a técnica de correntes parasitas se mostrou capaz de detectar defeitos neste tipo de material.

A combinação do elevado volume gerado de resíduos de equipamentos eletroeletrônicos (REEE) com o aumento da obsolescência programada faz com que haja a necessidade de se pensar em alternativas para a disposição destes resíduos sem impacto ao meio ambiente e à saúde humana, como a reciclagem com posterior recuperação de metais. Para isso, é necessário conhecer a natureza dos materiais constituintes do resíduo. A Placa de Circuito Impresso (PCI) é um importante representante dos REEE, pois está presente em grande parte dos equipamentos eletrônicos, como nos computadores. Sua composição heterogênea possui um alto teor de metais, alguns deles preciosos, que representam quase a totalidade do valor intrínseco da placa, justificando a importância da reciclagem para recuperação dos mesmos. No presente trabalho foi realizada a caracterização de uma placa de memória de computadores obsoletos para a posterior recuperação dos metais preciosos nela contidos na forma de nanopartículas. Conclui-se que a placa de memória possui 18,9% de metais, 48,4% de cerâmicas e 32,7% de polímeros em massa. Dentre os metais o Cu é o que aparece de forma mais expressiva, constituindo 13,83% em massa da placa. Os metais preciosos Ag e Au constituem 0,053% e 0,069% em massa, respectivamente, porém seu alto valor de mercado justifica a viabilidade de sua recuperação.

O refino primário através dos convertedores BOF representa uma etapa fundamental na fabricação do aço. Em meio a um mercado desafiador e competitivo, estabilidade operacional e inovações são necessárias para alcançar qualidade e preços razoáveis. Com o intuito de estudar o sopro combinado através de um modelo físico, similar com convertedor da thyssenkruppCSA 330t, foi utilizada uma análise visual associada a métodos colorimétricos para mensurar a penetração do jato e a melhor configuração de ventaneiras. Com base nesses métodos, encontrou-se a distância banho-lança que reduz o tempo de mistura com menor probabilidade de slopping. A partir dos resultados obtidos no modelo a frio, os parâmetros foram recalculados para a prática industrial.

"The increased costs of underground mining have continually challenged engineers to identify opportunities for alternatives to common approaches to underground development. Considerations to the design of horizontal and vertical development at the Dugald River mine targeted inclined raise boring to reduce horizontal development, not only to reduce cost, but to allow development activities to focus on other areas of the mine.The mine plan consists of 50 raise bored ventilation shafts, of which 17 have been mined to date with diameters ranging from 3.1 m to 5 m and lengths from 30 m to 200 m. The expected performance and stability of these shafts has been determined using methodologies proposed by McCracken and Stacey (1989) and further refined by Peck, Coombes and Lee (2011). Actual raise performances have been collated and compared to a database of raise bore performances across Australia as presented by Coombes, Lee and Peck (2011), and form a database of raise bore performance specific to Dugald River.Opportunities to further optimise the mine plan and reduce costs have seen the introduction of large diameter-inclined raise bored ventilation shafts to minimise the required lateral development to connect the ventilation circuits. Large diameter inclined shafts ranging between 3.1 m and 4.5 m in diameter have been successfully mined with dips down to 70°, reducing the cost of lateral development by more than $1 million over the next two years.Both technical and operational challenges were overcome in the mining of large diameter-inclined raise bores, including modification of: existing methodologies of assessing shaft wall stability for inclined raises. These included variations of the McCracken and Stacey method and the utilisation of the modified stability number (N’) previously developed for stope performance (Potvin, 1988). both the collar and toe development profiles, including the general set-up of the raise bore drill rig to reduce the operational risks associated with angled raises.Due to their success, inclined raises have been designed for subsequent stages of the life-of-mine ventilation system at Dugald River. "The Lamego mine is an underground gold mine in the Iron Ore Quadrangle in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The mine produces 48 to 50 koz per annum, as part of the larger Cuiabá-Lamego Complex. This combined unit is AngloGold Ashanti’s largest gold producer in the Americas, contributing with 310 to 320 koz per annum.The mine started production in 2009, utilising cut-and-fill mining methods.A mining method change was trialled in 2014, introducing open stope methods. The key benefits proposed from this change are considered to be: improved safety by eliminating re-entry mining methods reduced mining costs/increased productivity from utilising bulk-mining operations.The results from the trial were encouraging, and open stoping participation expanded beyond a trial.Production from open stope areas reached 180 000 t (40 per cent of total run-of-mine; ROM) in 2015. While the change in mining method resulted in higher production rates, it also introduced a critical issue in terms of stope recovery rate.Average underbreak (unplanned loss of ore) in the larger open stopes reached 21 per cent in 2015. To manage this ore loss, a project targeting higher recovery was structured with three primary components: analyse current performance to define contributing factors (design process gaps, operating practices) investigate corrective actions apply corrective actions and maximise team engagement to ensure changes become standard practice.Within six months of commencement, a range of contributing factors had been identified, and the majority of the associated corrective actions implemented, including increased team engagement to ensure changes were not ‘once off’ actions.The outcomes show a clear reduction in underbreak (average ~12 per cent for 2016), with further improvement opportunities identified. The challenging target is now to achieve a further reduction to 10 per cent underbreak as the average for 2017. "The feasibility of Dugald River mine was highly sensitive to mining and geotechnical design assumptions, particularly stope dilution and strike length. Following the start of initial mine development in 2012 the project was suspended in 2013 due to concerns over the complex ground conditions and resulting dilution, stope sizes and general mineability. A technical risk mitigation program was undertaken with a key aim to increase the level of confidence in predicting stope dilution.A stope sizing and dilution model was developed that provided a range of stope sizes based on geotechnical conditions and acceptable dilution. The original feasibility used a standard stope size of 25 m height by 25 m span. The new model was used as the foundation for the subsequent updated development plan for Dugald River that reduced much of the previous technical risk through greater confidence in the geotechnical and mining parameters.Several methods to predict stope hanging wall dilution and appropriate stope size have been used at Dugald River that relied on the modified stability graph method. Improvements to the method were identified as more rock mass and mining data became available through the completion of a trial stoping program, increased underground development and a large geotechnical core logging campaign. These improvements not only focused on the technical aspects of the model, but also on creating an easy to use and sustainable process that could be used at multiple stages of mine planning from life-of-mine (LOM) through to final stope design.Several of the main improvements are: understanding stope failure mechanisms and collecting only geological information that is most relevant detailed modelling restricted to the rock mass that could be expected to influence stope behaviour accounting for different stope failure mechanisms with the stability chart method assigning a geotechnical confidence factor to the data making it useful as a mine planning tool with integration into the mine planning process using performance of completed stopes to update and calibrate the model.The model provides recommended hydraulic radius and associated dilution estimates across the ore body. Providing the hydraulic radius allows planning engineers the option to consider single, double and triple lift stoping options suitable to mine scheduling. A synthesis of reported All-In Sustaining Costs (AISC) for 57 Australian gold mines in the period 2014–2016 reveals for the first time the clear influence of grade upon cost performance, most evident in gold-only underground mines. Past syntheses of costs on a single quarter basis have viewed grade as potentially subordinate to other factors such as production scale, mine geometry, mineralisation style and a combination of other mining-related costs. Better understanding of the grade to cost relationship on both an individual mine and whole-of-portfolio portfolio basis is needed. Insight into the roles and trade-offs between other cost-determining factors will aid the future sustainability of the gold mining sector in Australia and assist in targeting prospects for future resource growth and development. While the overall trend is toward higher-grade mines displaying lower costs and vice versa, the grade to cost functions appear radically different between mines based on time-series data. The median cost of Australian gold production in the final quarter of 2016 was A$1081/oz. The threshold for lowest cost quartile production was A$965/oz. Underground production now dominates Australian gold output – with 71 per cent of ounces originating from operations that are either entirely underground or hybrid pit/underground mines. Scale economies are evident, with smaller mines predominately among the higher cost producers. For mines of equal grade, open pit mines are lower cost than underground operations. Reserves are modest, with a median mine life for underground operations of 4.7 years based on current production rates. Reserve additions at mines are likely constrained not only by the finite nature of mineralisation at each mine but also by the geometrical difficulty of accessing suitable drilling locations to test for reserve extensions.CITATION:Ulrich, S, Trench, A and Hagemann, S, 2017. Gold Fields Australia (Gold Fields) has identified that improving productivity through more detailed shift planning and operational control of mining activities is a key driver to the success of their business. The Hamlet mine was chosen as a pilot site to trial a system that would allow production engineers and shift bosses to align the execution of short-term activities with the longer-term goals of the organisation.Gold Fields partnered with Deswik to introduce an on-site, collaborative, web-based system to allow mine planners to quickly build-up a detailed, activity-based, shift schedule for the coming week from the 13-week plan. Multiple stakeholders could then review and alter the plan, and then track and manage the execution of the activities.The system is designed to be integrated with production data capture systems to allow tracking of progress towards completion for each activity, as well as to plan and monitor the equipment operating in the mine. Integration of systems allowed engineers to use the large quantities of production data being captured to make informed decisions in the operations environment.The system replaced a complex set of spreadsheets that required expert users in Gold Fields to maintain. By capturing the data in a central database, the planning process is transparent and historic data from the execution of activities is available for analysis to improve productivity in the future.The system has ensured that the highest priority and critical path activities for the business are completed at the right time, improving the efficiency of operations.CITATION:Deucker, E and White, A, 2017. Blast performance and the resulting drawpoint condition and volume of oversize has the potential to impact operator safety and mine productivity. Underground measurements showed that approximately 14 per cent of production rings in the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) sublevel caving (SLC) operation had either overbreak in the brow or left collars. There were also oversize rocks reporting to approximately 30 per cent of drawpoints, which accounted for over 7 per cent of total production and significantly impacted production rates. A series of trials were conducted in 2015–2016 at EHM to test changes to certain charge parameters in an attempt to optimise blasting results and, in particular, reduce oversize and overbreak. The detailed analysis conducted included field observations, hole surveying, blast monitor analysis and blast modelling. There were a total of nine charge parameters tested in the project, which fell into two major categories: energy distribution and inter-hole delay. These were based on observations made in establishing baseline data and those parameters most likely to have a significant impact on overbreak and oversize.Key results from the project included oversize reduction and improved brow conditions when energy distribution was reduced through changing charge lengths in certain holes in the standard charge plan. Similar benefits were also seen when the inter-hole delay between blastholes was reduced from 50 ms to 25 ms. Based on these results both changes were made to the standard production ring charge plan at EHM.Moving forward, the aim is to continue monitoring the results from the changes made on all levels to ensure efficiencies are being realised and sustained. A 3 per cent improvement in oversize as a percentage of total tonnes and improved brow conditions not only has a positive impact on production rates, but removes people from any potentially hazardous situations and contributes to a safer working environment.CITATION:te Kloot, C and Liu, Z, 2017. The mining industry needs to attract and recruit young talented people. An important task is, therefore, to create an attractive mining workplace that engages with, and motivates youngsters who are not particularly interested in working in the industry. This paper aims to illustrate a way forward for the mining industry to form healthy and safe workplaces honouring key components such as knowledge, skill, co-operation, continual development and acceptance of diversity. This is a way to create a vision of healthy and safe mining work. The mining industry must work towards zero vision; a future without accidents and hazardous environments. In this paper the authors discuss different aspects of an ‘attractive workplace’ and summarises lessons learnt in 26 statements dealing with safety, both physical and social work environments, and social responsibility. The authors hope these recommendations will provide some guidance for how attractive workplaces should be designed for future deep mining.The paper is based on lessons from two large European projects, a Swedish-Polish project: The Smart Mine of the Future; and a European Union project: Sustainable Intelligent Mining Systems (SIMS). Over the last few years at Glencore’s Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) mining conditions have become increasingly challenging through lower head grades and higher work indices. MICO has had great success improving operating efficiencies and increasing productivity through focusing on technology, innovation and operational discipline. The recent implementation of the Mine Site Technologies (MST) ImPact System has supported the continued transformation of the MICO operations through improved personnel safety and direct measurement of productivity. The ImPact System has implemented new safety systems such as the heavy vehicle proximity detection system, underground personnel tracking system and emergency evacuation dashboards improving the overall safety of the workforce. The ImPact System has facilitated productivity improvements via real-time equipment and personnel monitoring, and the implementation of exception reporting (personnel productivity), KPI reports and production dashboards, and transparent reports highlighting developing maintenance issues.This paper discusses the components of the ImPact System, the current installation at MICO, and critically analyses the implementation processes and right sizing of the system to meet the needs of the business today and into the future.CITATION:Bullock, J, Kent, D and Wilkinson, M, 2017. Fatigue is it the newest buzz word or is fatigue a real phenomenon that is creating safety and organisational risk for you? There is no debate that fatigue is natural, and it affects us all, just like gravity; however, there has been much debate on the severity of its impact in the workplace. For many years the impact was not measurable, hidden out of sight and, quite frankly, written off as the infamous ‘operator error’. Over the last several years, advancements in technology have provided safety and health professionals, sleep scientists, fatigue experts and organisations with the ability to monitor and detect fatigue events in real time, as well as predict and monitor increased risk for fatigue events.
