"It is well known that from time-to-time a vehicle will interact with a bund or windrow and often the barrier is insufficient to safely arrest that vehicle. The result of such an incident is often catastrophic. Regulations around the requirement for edge protection near pit edges vary between jurisdictions. Generally in Australia regulations tend to be around placing the responsibility on the mine operator to provide ‘adequate’ or ‘appropriate’ edge protection. Guidelines often place a minimum height of bund at between half and two-thirds the diameter of the largest tyre on-site.Safescape has identified the opportunity to improve safety in open pit edge protection and is currently developing the Edge Protector (EP) product. The EP is designed to create a vertical front face to a conventional broken rock safety bund. The fundamental premise of the product is that by creating a vertical front face to the bund, trucks cannot easily drive up over the bund and instead have to push through the rock to get to the other side.In addition to providing a safer system for arresting vehicles, the vertical front face also means that extra space is made available in the haul road. This can either be used to facilitate larger trucks or when designing a new mine, with an increase in overall pit slope.This paper outlines the research and development of a new edge protection product. "Tyres consumption is one of the costliest branches of the operation in a truck-based haulage mine. Off-the-road (OTR) tyres working within undesirable conditions have a considerable negative impact on the whole mine’s productivity. Only the rolling resistance due to underinflated tyres could increase truck fuel consumption by 15 per cent. The impact of other conditions such as road surface quality and temperature are difficult to estimate. Tyre management is a demanding activity that requires a high level of coordination between maintenance and production departments.The project is aimed to develop a smart decision tool to assist mine managers to optimise tyre resources. By identifying factors that have significant impact on tyres, managers are able to take timely action to mitigate undesirable working conditions.The proposed model utilises real-time tyre measurement of pressure, temperature, speed, load, deformation and surface profile to report tyre performance in terms of tonne-kilometre-per-hour (TKPH) and tyre longevity. Both indicators are permanently monitored in order to trigger a warning system designed to keep tyres under optimal working conditions.An interactive database ‘Octo-Mine’ wirelessly receives records from a programmable logic controller (PLC) deployed on the truck. PLC records are the integration of multiple sensor signals with a time stamp. Octo-Mine utilises real-time and historical tyre records to generate online performance and longevity reports, as well as preventative and corrective tyre maintenance scheduling, by comparing current tyre status with established standards.To validate the model, the prototype database was populated with hypothetical data to simulate ideal working conditions subject to comparison with real field observations. Additionally, a laser-based technology prototype device successfully measured a new 9 mm tyre tread and a 60 000 km rolled tyre tread in the laboratory.In conclusion, optimal tyre management contributes not only to reduction of tyre waste but also to truck energy efficiency. This project is a first step in proving these benefits under real field conditions. "Even with the cyclic nature of mining, when it comes down to it, the bottom line is that whatever direction the commodity market is going there is always a desire to improve the economics of an operation in order to deliver a greater return to investors. Adapting to market pressures by introduction of an operational process change can often have a downstream impact. What may be less obvious is that reconciliation can play an important part in measuring the effectiveness of many operational changes. Through the adoption of best practice reconciliation and related comparisons, it is possible to measure the impact of changes across the mine value chain and identify variability that may have been introduced. Using analytical business improvement tools, examining and monitoring planned changes can be crucial in understanding whether the introduced changes have been effective and whether they have provided the expected result. "An effective geotechnical design provides an accurate and appropriate assessment, balanced with a mining company’s risk profile. Justifying the cost of slope assessment requires an understanding of the input sensitivities, and resultant risk, to achieve a slope of a required functionality. As a project progresses from Scoping to Feasibility, the geotechnical risk becomes better resolved through increased expenditure on drilling, testing, analysis and modelling as long as the input data is appropriately spatially distributed. Providing accurate and appropriate geotechnical assessments in the early stages provides confidence in all following stages, especially where initial analysis indicates difficult geotechnical conditions. It is also in the early stages of project definition that there is most opportunity to maximise the value of the deposit through investigations into optimal mining methods.This paper examines the advantages of geotechnical engineering input through a project study period. Early geotechnical involvement allows the Scoping and Pre-Feasibility Studies to be more effective. Operational risks can then be better understood and dealt within the Feasibility Study phase, also ensuring that the correct risks and management controls are put in place.With commodity price pressure and cost of resource recovery in a downturned industry, reducing the risk to cash flow, resource recovery and safety should be a primary goal for all mining companies. "There are few people more qualified to speak of the tumultuous times in the global mining industry during the past four years than Newmont Mining Corp. president and chief executive officer Gary Goldberg.Goldberg stepped into his current position in 2012, just before MINExpo 2012. Gold prices had hit record highs not long before that ($54.15/g or $1,856.40/oz on Sept. 8, 2011), expansions were happening around the world and the gold mining sector was still living in the glow of one of its longest upswings in history.That all changed between April 8 and April 15, 2013 when the price of gold dropped by nearly $200/oz ($46.27/g or $1,586.20/oz on April 8 to $40.45/g or $1,386.80/oz on April 15), putting an end to the decade-long mining boom and forcing mining companies like Newmont to re-evaluateeverything.Three years later, with the gold sector recovering, Newmont Mining is not only surviving but is thriving with a pair of mines coming online, Long Canyon in Nevada and Merian in Suriname. On Oct. 1, the Merian Mine went into production on time and more than $150 million under the initial development capital budget.Goldberg, who was one of the featured speakers at the opening session of MINExpo International 2016 on Sept. 26, also spoke with Mining Engineering about the previous four years and the future of the industry.“Mining goes through cycles all the time and gold is no different,” Goldberg told Mining Engineering when asked about surviving the downturn since 2012. “I thought it was important that we take a good methodical and steady approach across the business to determine what was the right thing to do and to set the business up to improve performance. Anyone can cut costs for the short term, but we set out to do it in a sustainable and reliable way. We created a program we call Full Potential to look for sustainable ways to reduce costs and improve productivity. That program has taken more than a billion dollars out of our costs since we implemented it 2013 and that shows up in our results. Our all in sustaining costs are down 28 percent and our productivity is up 39 percent.”During the downturn, Newmont restructured its business model, sold off some assets and created a leaner, more nimble operation. It has paid off with the addition of two new mines and the acquisition of another, the Cripple Creek & Victor Mine in Cripple Creek, CO.“The gold industry had not seen a downturn in 12 years. We had half a generation that had not experienced a downturn, so helping them through that in an organized way and keeping a view toward the long term throughout the downturn was important. We were one of the few companies that continued to invest in assets,” he said."

"A high altitude review of the state of the mining industry provided by a study of multifactor productivity shows a continuation of lower output year on year for the capital and labor inputs applied. The story is sadly similar for both U.S. mining and the Australian mining sector. In fact, according to PwC analysts, the world’s mining equipment productivity has declined 20 percent during the past seven years (Lumley, 2014). Although the reasons for the continuing decline in mining productivity are varied, the need for improvement is clear.The world’s mining industry fleet of more than 400 large draglines moves billions of tons of overburden and ore (phosphate, limestone, etc.) annually. This discussion will review a few of the tools available for improved productivity in dragline operations.Benchmarking equipment performance exposes the possibilitiesIn the September 2013 Mining Engineering cover story Graham Lumley and R. Adsero suggested that analyzing best practice equipment performance from an industrywide database for specific equipment performance improvement goals would be beneficial (Adsero, 2013). Benchmarking equipment performance by normalizing differences and then comparing specific measures of performance will provide a road map to improvement for those following the leaders. For those already performing at best practice levels, a benchmark confirms and bolsters what has already been achieved. As described in the SME February 2014 paper by this author, best practice is the average of the top 10 percent in annual output. Filling performance gaps identified by a comparison to best practice by investigating the details of the why and taking action to change, makes all the difference. This is true for all major mining equipment. Given the large gap between average performance and best practice performance most mining operations can benefit. Best practice performance provides a view of what is possible to the 90 percent majority of mining operations that are performing below the top 10 percent.For dragline mining operations, identifying specific characteristics and practices of leading dragline performance will provide a reference for comparison."

"In the recent past, the mining industry has witnessed a substantial increase in the numbers of fatalities occurring at metal and nonmetal mine sites, but it is unclear why this is occurring. One possible explanation is that workers struggle with identifying worksite hazards and accurately assessing the associated risk. The purpose of this research was to explore this possibility within the mining industry and to more fully understand stone, sand and gravel (SSG) mine workers’ thoughts, understandings and perceptions of worksite hazards and risks. Eight mine workers were interviewed and asked to identify common hazards they come across when doing their jobs and to then discuss their perceptions of the risks associated with those identified hazards. The results of this exploratory study indicate the importance of workers’ jobrelated experience as it applies to hazard identification and risk perception, particularly their knowledge of or familiarity with a task, whether or not they had personal control over that task, and the frequency with which they perform that task. IntroductionAccording to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA, 2015a), 37 mine workers were fatally injured in accidents at metal and nonmetal mine sites between October 2013 and January 2015, following a record low of 16 in 2012 and in 2011. In 2014 alone, 29 mine workers were fatally injured at a metal or nonmetal mine site, and 52 percent of these fatalities occurred at a surface stone, sand or gravel (SSG) mine. In January 2015, Joseph A. Main, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health wrote to stakeholders in the metal and nonmetal mining community and identified several areas where improvement was necessary to promote the health and safety of mine workers. One area identified was an increased focus on “daily and effective workplace exams to find and fix hazards” (MSHA, 2015b).Hazard detection is challenging in the mining industry, despite the existence of regulation. Mining is a major undertaking involving the use of complex heavy machinery, equipment and processes as well as numerous and diverse worker activities that take place in a dynamic, challenging environment (Scharf et al., 2001). In other industries that are similarly dynamic and unpredictable, such as the construction industry, a large proportion of hazards go undetected (Carter and Smith, 2006). It is critical that miners are able to both recognize worksite hazards and accurately assess the risk associated with the hazards, because their health and safety depend on their deciding whether and how to remove hazards and mitigate risks."

"Continuous improvement on metallurgical treatment plants is possible only when good data and analysis of the data are available. Good data implies appropriate and accurate mass measurement coupled with good sampling practices and accurate chemical analysis especially when carrying out monthly metallurgical metal reconciliations. Adequate characterisation of key samples (eg tailings, feed, concentrates and others) at timely intervals is an important part of a good continuous improvement program. The data from this will help identify opportunities to improve operation performance and thus profitability. "The primary control objective of the project is to achieve milling optimisation by ensuring that the energy available for rock breakage is used as efficiently as possible. This is achieved by increasing the level of mill filing until a process constraint is reached. Stable operation against this limiting constraint is then maintained to ensure long-term optimised operation.Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill control optimisation presents a number of challenges. SAG mills have multiple inputs that are used to control multiple outputs (MIMO process). Secondly, the SAG mill loading process is a ‘high inertia’ process that can be approximated as an integrating process. This means that it is open-loop unstable. The hybrid control strategy presented implements an advanced ‘load stabiliser’, which transforms this integrator process into a more manageable first order process, which can be steered stably against the constraints. This SGS hybrid Expert control strategy implemented on both SAG mills at the Porgera concentrator therefore consists of two integrated parts responsible for:stabilising the mill load to a targetdriving the mill load target to the maximum determined by the process constraints (eg maximum power draw) to maximise efficiency and throughput. A comparative study is done between the operation of the plant for a period of a month before and a month after the implementation of this strategy. "The requisite for maintaining optimal carbon concentration levels in a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit is of paramount importance in the prevention of gold losses. The process’s ability to recover gold from the aqueous phase is primarily dependent on the carbon loading profile of the CIL train.Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) have over 2015 tested the Mintek online carbon concentration wmeter (C2 Meter) suitability for effective carbon concentration measurements in their CIL circuit compared to the standard method where the readings are taken twice a shift by the operations staff. The C2 meter works by passing a 1MHz ultrasonic signal through a slurry containing carbon where there is a relationship between the carbon concentration and the attenuation of that signal.It also highlighted another area where the C2 meter could be implemented at NBG whereby the instrument can be as a cautionary device for carbon losses in place of carbon safety screens.Citation:McCamley, C, 2016. "Various approaches are used in the industry for establishing procedures (sample mass estimation and method of subsampling) for sampling and analysis of gold ores. The key factors that determine the accuracy of the results that can be expected for a given set of procedures are widely misunderstood.Recent developments in sampling theory show that the estimation of the accuracy that can be expected for a given gold ore as a function of sample mass is actually a simple matter. For a given sample mass, the accuracy that will be achieved depends only on the grade of the ore and the range of masses of the grains of the gold in the ore. This, of course, demands that a reasonable estimate of the distribution or spread of gold grain masses in the ore be known. But this is something that should be known if the gold is to be efficiently recovered in the processing plant.This paper provides a simple explanation of the real facts about sampling of gold, either in the field or in the plant, and provides results for a number of cases of combinations of fine and coarse gold in an ore. "The focus of this paper is on measuring the composition to improve mill feed quality to minimise the processing of waste, optimise process performance, reduce processing costs and minimise the generation of tailings.Technologies used since the 1990s in the cement and coal industries for measuring conveyed materials have been operationally proven and effectively derisked. Despite this the acceptance by the minerals industry has been very slow except in iron ore. Real-time penetrative full stream measurement using prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) for multielemental analysis and microwave transmission for real-time moisture analysis provide representative, tonnage weighted dry weight per cent results on a minute by minute basis. Analysis is unaffected by particle size, dust, layering/segregation, mineralogy and belt speed. The technologies are explained and performance examples given. The benefits derived from real-time compositional analysis are predicated upon a good understanding of deposit geology, mineralogical associations, waste to ore interfaces, amenability to mining, metallurgical processes and downstream customer requirements. Processing may include basic preparation in the case of direct shipping ores, minor beneficiation using simple upgrading methods, or concentration using more complex processing systems such as flotation, leaching or many others. The value of real-time data from primary crushed conveyed flows, using analysis of increments smaller than a single haul truck’s load, is very beneficial in process plants aiming to reduce waste processing, increasing feed grades and increasing metal recoveries. Grade variability can be utilised to divert conveyed increments of waste, direct shipping ore (DSO) quality material bypassing beneficiation, and subeconomic material amenable to upgrading diverted for further preconcentration by particle separation (sorting, heavy medium etc). Paybacks of a few months have been commonly achieved where the real-time technologies have been applied in the minerals sector. "The Gold Technology Group at Curtin University through the AMIRA P420 series of projects has recently developed the integrated liberation leach model (ILLM) for optimisation of gold plants. The model encompasses recovery by both gravity (batch centrifugal concentrators or BCCs) and leach adsorption (CIP/CIL) circuits. The ILLM essentially combines the Group’s well-known standalone models (ie gravity and SIMCIL) to create a robust simulation package.The ILLM process model provides a tool for sites to determine optimum set points for operations to optimise recovery (eg target grind size). It can also be used to predict the effect on gravity recovery, leach recovery and overall recovery when changes are made to circuit design, either temporarily (eg a leach tank taken off-line for maintenance) or as part of a circuit expansion (eg expanded gravity circuit capacity, or addition of leach tank capacity).This paper discusses the capability of the ILLM process model by highlighting a recent case study. "Northparkes installed and commissioned a secondary crushing circuit in 2010 to debottleneck the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill constrained grinding circuits. Following further improvements to the circuit (inclusion of a double deck vibrating screen), the project successfully delivered finer feed to the SAG mill. The result of this project was an increase in the milled tonnes from 5.6 Mt/a in 2012 to 6.0 Mt/a in 2013.The increased throughput rates introduced new challenges with the circuit becoming power limited. How to best optimise the available comminution power, while delivering the optimal particle size to the flotation circuit was made the key optimisation objective. To achieve this objective, Northparkes initiated a project that included engaging comminution experts. Recommendations included changes to the SAG mill including mill lifter design, increased grinding media charge levels and reduced grinding media size with aim of producing a finer grind size.Northparkes implemented these recommendations along with some other changes to SAG discharge grates and the mill discharge vibrating screen. This achieved a substantial reduction in the flotation feed particle size distribution (approximately 20 microns) by utilising increased average SAG power utilisation, in turn resulting in a two per cent increase in copper recovery.With power utilisation now maximised, the next phase of optimisation has moved to the throughput-grind-recovery relationship and the cost benefit analysis of installing additional grinding power.Citation:Sulianto, Y, Trott, T, Morgan, D, Bell, T, Kock, F and Putland, B, 2016. "Several mine scheduling tools exist for use in optimising and scheduling the reserve according to in situ value. These tools generally value the ore on a per block basis according to regressed recovery models based on ore grade and type. It is then the task of the plant metallurgist to ensure that these ore blocks are fed to the plant in a manner that satisfies the prevailing plant constraints. This task is often completed in complex Excel® spreadsheets that are modified over time with factors applied to account for plant modifications or limitations.It is the authors’ experience that this approach is difficult to audit and replicate in a consistent manner. Furthermore, operational decisions, such as primary grind size or autoclave oxidation are made on the metallurgist or managements’ perceived optimum value and does not necessarily represent a cash flow based optimum.Many processing plants contain multiple internal constraints. As ore feed grades and properties change over the life-of-mine (LOM), processing-bottlenecks shift from one unit process to another and different operating strategies need to be adopted to maximise cash generation from the process.This paper presents a unified optimisation approach to scheduling ore based on a circuit mass balance to describe the process plant with individual models for each significant unit operation. The approach allows for optimisation over multiple input variables and the inclusion of linear and non-linear constraints.This optimisation process has been applied to different complex gold operations. The end result is an automated scheduler that selects the optimum blend of ores as well as plant operating conditions that satisfy all internal plant and shutdown constraints while maximising the objective of choice (metal production or cash flow). The models are also valuable for evaluating expansion or debottlenecking opportunities of individual processing units. "This paper reports on the long-term operation of a particle density meter (PDM) at the Bloomfield coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP). This unit has been operating continuously for over three years, providing real-time data to the operators to allow the monitoring of flotation circuit performance. PDM outputs include slurry density, solids concentration on both mass and volumetric basis, and particle density. Knowing the average particle density of a stream allows for the optimisation of the process in real-time.The calibration of the solids concentration measurement device proved very difficult as the factory calibration techniques and existing laboratory analysis did not give accurate or reliable results. The solids concentration device had to be re-engineered and a new calibration method developed that gave accurate and repeatable results. Independent verification of samples taken from the PDM was undertaken as part of the trial process.The operational reliability of the PDM was a major point of investigation. The initial installation of the unit revealed issues with large, misplaced material of up to 20 mm periodically entering the unit, leading to feed blockages. The presence of these misplaced, oversized particles in the flotation circuit was resolved by installing innovative automatic back flush systems on the PDM.From a plant perspective the PDM has been an invaluable instrument that has enabled irregularities in the flotation circuit performance to be identified, which sampling had not and could not readily identify. This was achieved by close monitoring of real-time tailings composition on a minute by minute basis over short and extended periods. Variations in the tailings stream with respect to particle density and solids concentration were traced back to other issues in the plant. In addition, the PDM has allowed cell optimisation with respect to reagent dose rate to be improved. "It has been recognised that the presence of clay minerals in ores adversely affect flotation performance. In this study, changes in rheological properties of the flotation pulps under normal operating conditions were studied with additions of bentonite and kaolinite clays at various concentrations. Zeta potential measurements were also carried out to determine the changes in surface charge due to adsorption of clay particles. The results showed that bentonite clay adversely affects floatability of pyrite while kaolinite clay had a lesser influence on flotation of pyrite. The addition of Ca2+ ions to the pulp containing bentonite modified the rheological characteristics and in turn improved the pyrite flotation. It was also observed Ca2+ ions suppressed the swelling properties of bentonite and altered surface charge properties of bentonite clay particles. It has been shown that the flow index affected the ultimate recovery and it may provide a means to monitor flotation performance in routine plant operations.Citation:Basnayaka, L, Subasinghe, N and Albijanic, B, 2016. "The Phu Kham copper-gold operation in the Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining ten per cent held by the Laos PDR Government.The original 12 Mt/a copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. An incremental improvement program resulted in a number of circuit changes being incorporated by 2011, including conversion of conditioning tanks to flotation cells and the installation of a Jameson Cell cleaner scalper. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase throughput to 18 Mt/a. In April, 2013 the Phu Kham Increased Recovery Project was commissioned to maximise performance by debottlenecking the plant IsaMill™ regrind and cleaning capacity.With the variable mineralogy of Phu Kham ore, control of the c concentrate regrind circuit is essential in terms of achieving effective liberation to maintain concentrator performance. On a routine basis laboratory regrind signature plot data is compared with daily surveys of the operational IsaMills™. More extensive surveys are also conducted to determine size distribution on a mineralogical basis and the effect of fine regrinding on pulp electrochemistry and flotation performance. This paper provides a review of the operating performance of the Phu Kham IsaMills™ with regard to power draw, feed and product size distribution, feed per cent solids, mineralogy and pulp electrochemistry. "The Waihi Gold Mine (WGM) operated by OceanaGold New Zealand Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of the OceanaGold Corporation of Australia. Traditionally WGM has stockpiled and processed separate campaigns of open pit and underground ore. The ore is processed via a conventional semi-autonomous grinding (SAG) / ball circuit (SABC). The low aspect SAG mill operates in a closed circuit with two 20" cyclones, whilst the ball mill is also a closed circuit with a 10" cyclone cluster. A major wall movement in April 2015 ceased open pit operations indefinitely, 18 months ahead of the mining plan. This immediately reduced the forecast mill tonnage leaving two options: begin campaign milling or change the operating strategy and target lower throughput. Additional cost pressures necessitated improved milling cost efficiency. The immediate ore restriction limited processing alternatives to within the existing major infrastructure. Available comminution circuit survey data laid the foundation for developing a comminution model using the JKSimMet™ software package (version 6, created by KJTech). A number of flow sheet variants were then evaluated based on predicted throughput and efficiency. The comminution models suggested opportunities for improved efficiency lay in reducing throughput and increasing utilisation rather than on/off campaign milling under the existing operating philosophy. A series of process alterations followed, delivering new cost efficiencies that maintained the current $/t processing cost. "In the 1990s metal prices were trending in a long-term decline and the usual cost-cutting exercises were adopted. Cuts to research and development made innovation difficult and the outlook was grim. But necessity is a strong motivator, and these conditions spurred the Mine to Mill movement that optimised across organisational ‘silos’ and utilised new technology tools, innovative software and increased computing power. Many applications of Mine to Mill exploited the fact that comminution is usually the site processing bottleneck and blasting is more efficient at breaking rock than grinding. This approach sought to: understand and characterise rock breakage from mining to the milldevelop models and simulators for blast design, fragmentation, crusher and mill circuitsdevelop tools to measure in real time the particle size distribution of rocks on run-of-mine (ROM) muck piles, at the primary crusher truck dump pocket and on conveyorsensure effective communication across the silos between geologists, blast design engineers, mining engineers and metallurgists.These methods and the technology tools available in the 1990s were widely adopted at numerous sites around the world with significant benefits. Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill throughput increases of 10–20 per cent were common. This was the advance the industry desperately needed. It was low capital cost; it was obvious. It was here to stay.Except, in too many cases, it didn’t. In the minerals price boom of the 2000s Mine to Mill was no longer necessary to ‘survive’, even though it was still good business. Some operations, including some of the early success stories, slipped back to old habits of optimising within organisation silos instead of across them. Fortunately, other operators still embraced Mine to Mill and developed new techniques. Mine to Mill was still successful, but not as widely adopted as we had expected it to be. Now the boom has ended and operations are again under cost pressure. Since these are the same circumstances that created Mine to Mill, it seems time to achieve the wider adoption. Since the 1990s many new or advanced technology tools are now available for Mine to Mill projects: blasthole sensors, new explosives formulations, new blasting techniques and modelling, ore tracking devices, improved image analysis to determine size, texture and colour of coarse ore, grade sensors, whole-stream simulation tools, and even more powerful computing hardware and data analysis software.
