In April of 2013 a 48 MVA submerged arc furnace producing silicomanganese was excavated in South Africa. One of the areas excavated systematically was the furnace taphole. The aim was to obtain a refractory wear profile of the tap-hole area, together with affected hearth and sidewall refractory. Subsequently, thermodynamic modelling was applied to quantify the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag and refractory and metal in the tap-hole area.

"SAMPLING: THE IMPACT ON COSTS AND DECISION MAKING1. INTRODUCTIONFor years those in the minerals industry have been taking samples to assist them in making decisions; whether they be about investing billions of rand in a new mining operation, or simply whether a truck load of mineralised material should go to the mill or the waste dump, - we need a sample to help us make our decisions. This paper emphasises the importance and significance of sampling as a process, some of the associated technical problems and some of the advantages, especially in the light of traditional approaches that has usually left mine sampling to the least educated and lowest paid individuals on the mine. Perhaps the most important aspect that requires attention is the variability, usually measured in terms of precision, that tends to infect the sampling procedures. Francis Pitard 12 has stated: ""There is no such thing as reliable feasibility studies, unbiased ore grade control, accurate environmental assessments or effective process control, if you cannot identify and minimize the seven (ten) major sources of sampling variability. "" It is these ten sources of sampling variability and the way they arise that are briefly investigated. Variability is measured in terms of variances and rather than being self-compensating, there is good evidence to indicate that they are in fact additive at every step in the sampling and analytical process."

"A new method is introduced for the simulation by computer of the flow of liquid underground. The method has application in simulating, for example, liquid withdrawal systems, injection systems or injection-well systems. The computer simulation of liquid flow permits the utilization of the known properties of the rock in developing a model of the permeable rock mass.The flow properties of the rock at a specific site arc generated statistically using a random number generator. After defining in this manner the rock properties of each element in the computer grid, the streamlines or flow paths of the liquid are traced using the new method. The simulation is designed especially for computers. The meandering character of the liquids paths is displayed clearly as the fluid moves underground, thus providing the technical information required for the control of the movement of liquid."

The sediments near coasts and ports in Korea have been found to be contaminated with heavy metals and organic matters. So far the sediments have been dumped to landfill sites or ocean. However, the number of available landfill sites is decreasing and ocean disposal of wastes was strictly prohibited. Although physical separation processes have been found to be useful for the remediation of contaminated soil with heavy metals, because the sediments consist of fine particles, it is difficult to remove heavy metal component by physical separation processes. Furthermore, the sediments contain organic matter, so there is a concern about strong stink during the sediment treatment. The present study is aimed to develop the treatment process for removing heavy metals and organic matter from the contaminated sediments. The heavy metals and organic matter were oxidized and dissolved by electro-generated chlorine, and the chlorine used is regenerated and circulated in the leaching process. This system has economic and environmental advantages to reduce the wastewater and the oxidant consumption. The leaching results show that the metal removal efficiency increased to more than 99%, and more than 50% of organic matter was decomposed.

In use, blasting powder is exploded by a spark from fuse, electric squib or miner’s squib, or by a primer of some high explosive, the last being employed only in heavy charges on open work. In mining, and sometimes in light charges on open work, blasting powder is made into cartridges by means of a paper tube or cylinder sealed at one end, which is known as the Du Pont tamping bag. Sometimes the paper cylinder is made by the miner by coiling a section of heavy paper, known as blasting paper, around a wooden pin, called a cartridge pin, and securing it with what is called blasting soap. The removal of the pin leaves a cylindrical cartridge open at one end, into which the powder is poured and the top folded and sealed with blasting soap.

"Reference materials have always been important for validating and controlling analytical methods', They have recently become even more important as quality requirements have become more stringent and customer demands for properly verified and controlled results increase. Clients, especially from the resource exploration industry demand critical validation of all results reported. Mintek has been producing geological and semi processed ore references since the early 1970's and recently due to increase in demand other manufactures have entered the South African Market.This paper describes Analytical challenges from the customer's perspective. The customer being the metallurgist, mine geologist, environmental scientist and geologists from resource companies. Reference Materials and their appropriate use and good understanding of them can aid greatly in building confidence in the results, choosing the right Laboratory for a project, deciding which set of results arc correct and providing evidence to the customer's clients that the results obtained are the very best possible.Throughout the world there are hundreds of reference materials produced by over 80 organisations and these are mainly ores, rocks, semi processed ores, metals, and many more. Mintek is one of the top 10 producers with over 75 products. Many of these producers including Mintek and their respective standards organisations belong to the ISO REMCO committee and their respective work groups. This committee's main task is to draw up guide lines for the use, manufacturing and certifying reference materials. In South Africa a mirror committee has recently had its inaugural meeting the function is to give clear mandate to the South African representative on the main ISO REMCO committee, the South African delegate bas an opportunity to influence the contents of the guides.Tile SARM program has since the year 2000 increased its sale three fold, the question is why? There is more accountability needed in our world. That means Analytical results have to be the very best possible and risks associated to them must be well quantified. Consider that the risk of wrong results of wrong decisions made from a result is trivial to laboratory, in comparison to the laboratories customers. The consequence to a laboratory could be a loss of income or some one may lose their job. To the customer he may dig up 1000 of ton's of rock with nothing in it or worse still don't mine it when the grade is high enough. This is seriol1s money."

There have recently been executives at major metals companies who have recommended that Greenfield Projects not be pursued. Greenfield includes not only new geographical locations, but also new technologies and new types of feed materials. In the middle part of the 20th Century, two such projects were successfully commercialized to recover nickel from Cuban lateritic ores. One project (at Nicaro) used the Caron ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach and the other (at Moa Bay) a high pressure acid leach. How both of these projects dealt with these Greenfield issues will be reviewed, based on the original reports that described the research and development of the plants. This study will include a review of the critical ore characterization and sorting issues, as well as the extractive metallurgical, product recovery and equipment selection and sizing problems and how they were solved at each stage of project development, from laboratory through one or more pilot scale plants to start up and operation. In one case, a major revision of the plant was made after several years of operation to correct operating, equipment selection and materials of construction problems that hindered economical operation. These descriptions will provide a guide through the complicated and critical issues that in recent times have caused many companies to give up on similar development. Even with the more advanced analytical and computational tools available to today’s mineralogists, engineers and metallurgists, the basic concepts with which these projects successfully addressed their sets of problems are still required. In addition, upper management, now perhaps further removed from hands-on experience than was common then, will see how complicated problems require intense and detailed effort to avoid failure in the field and capital blowouts. Build it and we will make it run, kicking the can down the road and borrowing operating and design concepts incorrectly on technological issues, or nine year olds on a sugar high making financial decisions are not philosophies by which to succeed with Greenfield Projects.

"The Several approaches were tried for developing an electrochemical route for producing high purity silicon from molten salts. K2SiF6 and metallurgical grade silicon were used as the source of silicon. Molten LiF-KF and pure KF with additions of K2SiF6 were used as electrolytes at temperatures from 550 - 900 oC. Silicon was cathodically deposited and anodically dissolved in the fluoride electrolytes. High electrorefining efficiency was obtained for many elements after electrolysis experiments at constant potential or constant current. The main challenge was to reduce the contents of boron and phosphorus. Another difficulty was to remove inclusions of solidified electrolyte. The lowest energy consumption was estimated to be ~ 3 kWh/kg Si, while the best current efficiency for Si deposition was found to be ~ 95 %.IntroductionSilicon is the most important material for photovoltaic power generation devices because of high feasible efficiency, low ecological impact and slow degradation. Development of a new and less expensive route for producing silicon of the desired quality is necessary in order to make solar cells competitive. Electrochemical routes may be an alternative possibility, and many laboratory studies have been reported over the past few decades. Most of the studies have been performed in molten salts, chloride or fluoride, at moderate temperatures so that solid silicon was deposited at the cathode. The production of high purity silicon has shown an annual increase of about 25 %, due to the increasing demand of solar grade silicon (SoG-Si). For future increased use of solar energy it is important to develop alternative, more energy efficient and cheaper processes for SoG-Si production compared to the Siemens process.Common silicon sources have been SiO2 and K2SiF6 for electrowinning and MG-Si in the case of electrorefining. A serious challenge is to find an oxygen evolving anode for electrolytes containing dissolved oxides. Especially at moderate to high temperatures and in molten fluoride electrolytes this is a difficult task.Many experimental results have been reported in molten chloride electrolytes. Nohira et al. [1-3] and Chen et al. [4] cathodically deposited silicon by electrodeoxidation of solid SiO2 in molten CaCl2 by potentiostatic electrolysis. An alternatice approach is to use electrorefining of low-cost metallurgical grade silicon (MGSi) to produce SOG-Si. In previous studies [5], an MG-Si anode was used, and silicon was successfully electrodeposited on a molybdenum wire in a CaCl2 based melt. It was found that the anode was strongly passivated due to the precipitation of silicon. Also, some deposits detached from the molybdenum wire because of the poor adherence to the cathode.Considering the Cu-Si alloy which has a good segregation effect for some impurities, and should not passivate, could be a good candidate anode for electrorefining. With the advent of the First World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB1) in Denmark in 2003 and the subsequent biannual meetings, together with other sampling conferences held on a regular basis, the central tenets of sound sampling practice and theory are spreading throughout the minerals industry. End-users and project houses, or groups who execute the projects, are all now better-informed about the principles of ?correct? sampling and preparation. To support this, many large mining companies now have their own in-house champion who will advise and ensure that the supply of sampling equipment is correct in terms of design and application, which further contributes to improved metallurgical accounting. The presence of a sampling champion also ensures that consistent and acceptable standards in regard to sampling practice are maintained throughout the group. This has, in turn, placed a greater degree of responsibility on the shoulders of sampling equipment suppliers, in terms of their equipment designs and product offerings, as well as applications knowledge for effective installation of equipment on client plants. This paper attempts to highlight the significant challenges that sampling equipment manufacturers often face with regard to complying with the newly understood requirements of best practice and sampling equipment design. Manufacturers invariably face issues with end-users or project houses, including project cost control, restricted headroom for samplers in plant layouts, and a lack of knowledge in certain quarters. These all have a potentially negative effect on the final outcome of a proposed sampling solution or implemented project. In reality, what is intended by all parties and what is ultimately installed are at times very different, with undesirable consequences for all concerned. Against this challenging background, there are, however, a number of instances where intent and implementation are complementary, with very satisfactory results. "Optical microscope together with alternative wet-dry cyclic accelerated corrosion tests and XRD, SEM were employed on bridge weathering steel samples with different Mn and Ni contents which were vacuum induction melted and rolled to study their effects on the microstructure and rust layer evolution in er' containing condition. The results show that the microstructure is mainly ferrite and pearlite when Mn and Ni contents are 0.75 %, 0.42 %, respectively. Both the increase of Mn and Ni contents will make pearlite disappear while granular bainite appear, meanwhile the grain size decreases. With the increase of Mn content, the corrosion rate decreases in the initial stage, but the effect becomes little in the later stage. The increase of Ni not only improves the corrosion resistance of steel base at the initial stage but also hinders the tendency of further corrosion. As Mn content increases, a-FeOOH contents in rust layer decreases. With increase of Ni content, the content of a-FeOOH in the rust increases while that ofy-FeOOH decreases.IntroductionWeathering steels had been ~radually applied in manufacture of bridges owing to reducing the corrosion rate remarkably [I- l .Good weldability was needed for high performance bridge weathering steels. Since carbon was thought to be bad for weldability, low carbon content steel was adopted and Mn was added to amend the mechanical strength loss. Some scholars[6, 7l believed that Mn was beneficial for increasing corrosion resistance performance of the steel in marine atmospheric environment. Some scholars [S, 9l thought that Mn had little effect on corrosion resistance in marine atmospheric environment. Presently, the effect of Mn on bridge weathering steel in marine atmospheric environment still remained poorly understood. Ni was considered to be beneficial for increasing corrosion resistance performance in marine atmospheric environment [JO-l4l However, the high cost limited its application range. What would bring to the rust and corrosion by decreasing Ni content needed further research.Most researchers assumed that microstructures only affected the corrosion behavior of bare steel. But the study of Guo et al. P5l showed that the homogenous microstructures were beneficial for the corrosion resistance of steels. The effect of Mn, Ni content change on microstructure and microstructure on corrosion still remained poorly understood. In the present work, the effect of Mn and Ni on the microstructures of steel matrix, as well as the microstructures on the rust and corrosion was investigated."

"As part of the planning system at each division of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Limited, the Mine Planning Department is required to produce a detailed production schedule for each shaft.Because of the difficulties in producing a schedule which satisfies all the mining constraints, and because of the large clerical effort involved, the full range of possible schedules can never be considered.It has been found possible to produce a schedule using linear programming which satisfies the majority of the many varied mining constraints. Computer programs have been written to enable the mine planning department to use this mathematical system without assistance.The system has a large degree of flexibility to enable the planner to include conditions which cannot be incorporated readily in the linear program. This system permits the more efficient production and evaluation of schedules and reduces the amount of clerical effort."

Flotation froth machine vision systems provide consistent real-time measurements pertaining to the state of the flotation cell being monitored. Typical measurements include froth velocity, froth colour, froth texture and froth stability. This paper presents the results from test work conducted on the molybdenite rougher circuit at the Kennecott Utah Copper Concentrator during February 2006. Machine vision results show that it is not possible to accurately determine bubble size distribution information for the molybdenite froth, despite using state-of-the-art methods. Instead, it is necessary to make use of texture measurements to classify the various different froth states. Numerous combinations of texture measurements and classifiers are used to determine the best combination. Results show that the Fourier ring based texture measurements perform the best when both K nearest neighbour and Gaussian mixture model classifiers are used. The concentrate grade of the flotation cell is modelled using combinations of froth velocity and froth texture descriptors. The results show that by using a linear combination of these descriptors rather than either one by itself it is possible to account for a much larger percentage of the variation observed in the concentrate grade data. Adjusted R2 values of 92% and 84% are achieved when modelling the copper and the molybdenite concentrate grade respectively.

"Photocatalysis utilizes solar energy to produce hydrogen by splitting H2O. When a thin film of photocatalyst TiO2 is supported on a ferroelectric BiFeO3 substrate (band gap ~2.5 eV), the TiO2/BiFeO3 heterostructure is capable of photochemically reducing Ag+ to Ag0 in aqueous solutions under blue light with enhanced efficiency. The observation of spatially selective silver patterns on surface of the heterostructure after reaction suggests that photogenerated electrons and holes in ferroelectric BiFeO3 are driven in opposite directions to reduce their chance of recombination. Comparisons of the amounts of reduced silver on TiO2 film grains with distinct phases/orientations show that the reactivity is mildly preferential on anatase TiO2 phase and does not strongly depend on crystallographic orientation of BiFeO3.IntroductionTitania (TiO2) is capable of photocatalytically converting H2O to hydrogen and oxygen under the irradiation of ultraviolet light. [1, 2] One of the limiting factors for titania to be used as an effective photocatalyst is its band gap. Because the absorption edges of rutile and anatase titania are at 3.0 eV and 3.2 eV, respectively, they can only absorb light in the UV portion of the spectrum, which is about 3% of the available solar energy. [3-5] This limitation has motivated attempts to modify the absorption edge of titania so that it can absorb visible light.One strategy is to substitute a portion of the titanium and/or the oxygen with other atoms. There are numerous reports on visible light absorption of titania by doping and co-doping of Cr, V, Mo, Sb, Fe, N, S, C, and F. [6-34] Another strategy is to add an adsorbed molecular species that absorb visible light and donate an electron or hole to the titania, such as organic dyes [33, 35, 36] and Ce3+/Ce4+. [37, 38]The strategy in the present work takes the approach of depositing a pure titania thin film on a visible light absorbing substrate BiFeO3 to induce visible light activity of the heterostructure. BiFeO3 is a semiconductor with a band gap of about 2.5 eV [39-41] and is photocatalytically active in visible light. [42, 43] It is also ferroelectric with spontaneous polarization along pseudo-cubic <111> directions of 6.1 µC cm-2. [44] The spontaneous polarization gives rise to internal electric fields that drive photogenerated charge carriers, namely electrons and holes, in opposite directions to reduce their chance of recombination. [45-47] Additionally, the separation of electrons and holes leads to the spatial separation of reduction and oxidation half reactions so that the back reaction of intermediates is also suppressed. Such charge carrier separation has been reported in TiO2/BaTiO3 heterostructures with UV light illumination. [48-51] The TiO2/BiFeO3 heterostructures in this work combine both advantages of the relatively narrow band gap and the internal fields in BiFeO3 to enhance the overall photocatalytic activity."

To comprehensively utilize the valuable resource in tailings, increase the economic benefit of mine, reduce the amount of tailings, prolong the service life of tailing dam, the comprehensive utilization of tailing resource is arousing the attention of more and more mines. Research of comprehensive recovery of feldspar and silica from Cu-Mo floatation tailings has been furthered. Technology of "De-sliming-Magnetic Separation-Reverse Flotation-Feldspar and Silica Separation" has been developed to utilize the resource. Slime is removed and reagents cost is reduced by de-sliming. The specific effective collector ZL is used in gangues reverse flotation, and GZ-818 is the collector in feldspar and silica separation. The grinding operation is vital to ensure the liberation degree of feldspar and to eliminate the reagents pollution on minerals surface. To a Cu-Mo flotation tailing assaying K2O 5.22%, Na2O 2.22%, Fe2O3 1.95%, Al2O3 12.05%, SiO270.66%, superfine K-feldspar and silica concentrates can be produced. The feldspar concentrate productivity is 29.67% assaying K2O 8.99%, Na2O 2.86%, Fe2O3 0.16%, Al2O3 16.99% and SiO2 68.92%. The silica concentrate productivity is 14.20% assaying 0.17% K2O, 0.04% Na2O, 0.01% Fe2O3, 0.55% Al2O3 and 98.17% SiO2. The technology provides technological reference model for the similar mines.

"Matheron&apos;s geoslalislical method for the estimation of ore reserves has been developed to the point at which real-life problem may be handled effectively. The steps involved in the method are:(i) obtalning the variogram,(ii) fitting a model, and(iii) producing block estimates.All three steps may cause difficulty, and would-be users need a deep understanding of the theory if failure is to be avoided.To illustrate these points, specific cause are considered:(i) two almost equidimensional porpbyry deposits, one drilled randomly and the other regularly; and(ii) two iron formation, one drilled extensively and being mined, while the other is still at the stage of early estimation."

"Chairman: Dr DeV. HarrisRapporteur: Mr A.H. MunroPapers:Corporate exploration strategies by MacKenzie, B.W.The Engel Simulator and the search for uranium by Griffiths, J.C. and Singer, D.A.The Chairman opened the session by tracing the changes which have taken place in the exploration field since the days of the lone prospector who relied upon his individual skills and to a large extent on luck. The deposits which now remain to be discovered are better covered and are of lower grade. A much greater team effort, involving geoscientists and engineers, is required. The gamble is thus much greater -not only are the probabilities of failure still significant but the consequences are more severe. A recent Canadian survey indicated that expenditures of between two and nine million dollars on regional exploration programs are required to locate one significant deposit.The Chairman went on to say that these facts have led companies to regard exploration as another form of investment and to treat it accordingly. This had placed exploration in the context of corporate strategics and structures, which was the subject of the first paper of the session.In introducing his paper, Dr B. W. MacKenzie said that the paper suggested a decision framework for exploration planning. Initially the environment is analyzed to define observable and relevant economic characteristics. The terms of reference for exploration planning and the appropriate allocation of capital and skills are then established in the light of corporate objectives and growth alternatives. With the aid of this information and in the light of profit and corporate risk criteria, exploration strategies can be selected.Dr MacKenzie went on to say that the usefulness of the concept and criteria outlined in his paper depended critically upon three characteristics of any particular economic environment, namely, the return resulting from an economic discovery, the unit discovery Cost and the probability of making an economic discovery. He then showed by means of a case history relative to the Canadian Shield and Cordilleran areas that these three characteristics could, in fact, be evaluated for regions with reasonable histories of mineral activity.The first contributor to the discussion of the paper, Mr Alfred Weiss, mentioned that his group had been involved in exploration modelling for some ten years and were thus particularly interested in the paper. He went on to say that they had experienced greatest difficulty with reconnaissance programs and that he sensed that these difficulties were also present with the methodology which had been outlined. Mr Weiss asked Dr MacKenzie how he would deal with such situations when no information was available but where there was the potential for both exploration and discovery. Dr Mackenzie agreed that the lack of information was a very severe limitation and said that at the present time his methodology probably did not provide a basis for breaking down the broad geological regions he considered into areas for further assessment."

Research on alternative lixiviants for gold is ongoing; however few people have looked at complete flowsheets. Alternative lixiviants are typically applied at concentrations 50 to 100 times those required for cyanidation. The higher concentrations make lixiviant recycle a vital part of the process. In addition it is no longer feasible to rely on lixiviant destruction to produce lixiviant free clean water for recycle to the comminution circuit. Ausenco has worked with Barrick to integrate reverse osmosis into the thiosulfate RIL processing flowsheet that forms the basis of the plant upgrade currently being constructed at Barrick’s Goldstrike autoclave facility.

Despite the successful industrial practice to recovery KCl by flotation, the adsorption state of collectors at KCl salt surfaces is still not fully understood. In this paper, the captive bubble contact angle measurements at KCl and NaCl crystal surfaces in their saturated solutions are reported. The influence of different collectors and their concentration are considered. The results show that both cationic and anionic collectors produce a hydrophobic state at the structure breaking KCl salt sur-face, with finite contact angle values of between 30o and 40o. In contrast, the contact angle at the structure making NaCl salt surface is zero at all collector concentrations, suggesting that no collec-tor adsorption occurs, a supposition that is supported by results from molecular dynamics simulation (MDS). Further, it appears that the presence of surface defects such as edges and corners promote the adsorption of collectors at the KCl surface, and that the flotation is achieved by bubble attachment at the edges/corners of KCl particles with the formation of aeroflocs.
