Considering the subtractive trend of the sulfide and high-grade zinc ores in worldwide and also in Iran, Nowadays special attentions have been drawn to the extraction of zinc from its other resources such as low-grade oxide ores and secondary resources. Oxide ore of the eastern part of Mehdi-abad lead and zinc mine is silicate and has an average grade of 7% (with cut off grade of 4%). Main mineral of the Mehdi-abad ore is Hemimorphite and this mineral is associated with Goethite, Hematite, Ferrous Dolomite, and Manganese oxide mineral so that oxides of Iron, manganese and silica include almost 50% of the total ore. In this paper, the results obtained from the leaching kinetic study of the low-grade zinc oxide ore using Sulfuric acid are presented. The effects of particle size, reaction temperature, acid concentration, and solid percent on the dissolution rate have been investigated. The results obtained from the Taghochi approach showed that the zinc recovery is about 78% under the following optimized conditions: particle size: 106µm, leaching time: one hour, temperature: 45°C, acid concentration: 15% and solid percent: 15%. Kinetics study was revealed that zinc minerals leaching controlled by diffusion rate through the product layer during leaching time with the activation energy of 5 KJ/mol and compliance with the 1- (2/3. x) ? The process of gold(I) adsorption on activated carbon (AC) from aqueous Na[Au(CN)2] and the state of the adsorbed gold cyanide complex on the adsorbent surface was investigated by photometry, XPS, XANES methods. By DFT method, quantum-chemical calculations were performed of the gold cyanide species on activated carbon surface. It was established that the binding of gold(I) with the surface of carbon involved several simultaneous processes governing the selective adsorption of gold(I) from the cyanide solutions.

The Tóth adsorption isotherm-model was derived and has been widely used for the inhomogeneous solid surfaces. The three-parameter isotherm incorporates the effect of the interaction between the adsorbed substances as well. All classic isotherms can be clearly derived from this one. Bio sorption is the sequestering of dissolved components, i.e. metals from aqueous environment by living or dead biomass. The mechanism of the bio sorption is rather complex and predominantly refers to the affinity of the chemical functional groups: acetoamido groups of chitin, structural polysaccharides, amino and phosphate groups in nucleic acids, amino, amido sulfhydryl and carboxyl groups in proteins, hydroxyls in polysaccharides, sulphates, etc. towards the soluted substances, i.e. heavy metal ions. The physisorption, as well as the micro precipitation also play a role in the bio sorption mechanism. The description of such a complex process can be done by a model reflecting this complexity. According to our experimental results obtained using algae and immobilised algae for the sorption of heavy metal cations, the most appropriate model for such a description is the Tóth-isotherm, the parameters of which can be interpreted. Flotation process is also a very complex one, the overall result of which depends on the partial results of many micro processes and parameters. The particle interaction which very often takes place in the flotation systems makes the phenomenon even more complex. The flotation kinetic model with particle interaction was already introduced by author in 1994 and further developed in 2000. In this paper based on the experimental results obtained with metallic particles in case of recycling flotation the applicability of the Tóth-equation as an alternative flotation kinetic model for the systems with particle interaction is proved. The applicability of Tóth-model in mineral processing demonstrates again its universal character and the great talent of the late József Tóth, great Hungarian chemist. The process of liquid?liquid extraction of gold from chloride solution is complicated by the presence of many variables acting simultaneously in an unknown non-linear fashion for the determination of the final extraction efficiency. In practice, it is quite difficult to develop a model for predicting various properties of such process. Therefore, an alternative approach based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is considered to assist in the simulation process. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are powerful tools that can be used to model and investigate various highly complex and non-linear phenomena. This paper presents application of Multi-Layer Perceptions (MLP) to construct relationship that will be employed to develop a quantitative method for the estimation of the extraction efficiency as a function of hydrodynamical parameters such as stirrer speed, [AuCl4]- and DBC concentration, organic and aqueous flow rate. The model is shown to be in excellent agreement with the experimental data (R2 value for training and testing data was 0.9992 and 0.9915 respectively). Therefore, it can be used to optimize the parameters of liquid?liquid gold extraction with dibutyl carbitol (DBC).

Coal is the prime source of energy in India. It now contributes to about 55% of the total power generation and will continue to have its major share in the energy mix of the country in the foreseeable future. Thermal coals of India, known for their wide variations in nature and categorized as difficult to wash due to their typical mineral matter association with the organic matrix, need suitable beneficiation technique for quality upgrade for improving the overall economics, efficiency and pollution free power generation. A non-coking high-ash coal, collected from Vasundhara open cast mine of the Ib Valley Coalfield, Orissa, has been characterized along with its different fractions obtained in the process of beneficiation for distribution of minerals using FTIR, XRD and ash analysis. The raw coal was fractionated by size as well as by density. It has been observed that ash yields and mineralogical composition (found to be mainly kaolinite and quartz) have no appreciable change in different size fractions, indicating homogeneous distribution of minerals in the coal matrix. However, for the different density fractions the mineral composition and ash yield have significant variations. The quartz content of the beneficiated coal visualized with 34% ash yield, as mandated by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF) for the use of coal in power plants is reduced to half of that of the raw coal. As quartz is the most abrasive mineral in coal, reduction of its proportion obviously signifies considerable reduction of wear of power plant machinery when beneficiated coal is fed to utility boiler for generation of power. This paper is aimed to elucidate the problem of copper losses in pyrometallurgical slag. Currently, flotation is used to recover copper from the slag and return the metal into the pyrometallurgical process, but the percentage of recovery frequently remains unacceptable. The process of copper leaching from the slag flotation tailings using biologically regenerated ferric sulfate is considered here as an approach to the issue. A sample of the slag flotation tailings containing 0.67% Cu and 4.99% Zn was supplied by the Urals Mining and Metallurgical Company (UGMK, Russia). The Cu and Zn speciation analysis of the sample demonstrated that Cu occurred as 58.1% oxide, 15.4% native Cu, and 18.1% secondary sulfides whereas chalcopyrite proportion was as low as 8.4%. Prevailing Zn species were refractory (58.9% Zn ferrite), and zinc oxide and silicate species made just 37.2% of the total metal content. The silicate generated silica gel that strongly hampered filtration. As demonstrated, Cu recovery is a possibility, which is apparently not the case with Zn. In this work, the stirred tank bioreactor acid leaching employing bacterial Fe3+ sulfate solutions was studied, with ferric sulfate being a product of Fe2+ biological oxidation and not the chemical reactant adding of Fe3+ sulfate. Acidithiobacillus, Sulfobacillus, and Leptospirillum bacilli were employed in Fe2+ biooxidation. Temperature, pH, Eh, S:L ratio, leaching time, and Fe3+ concentration in the source leachate as the process controls were considered. As demonstrated, the process employing biologically regenerated ferric sulfate proved to be more efficient than conventional chemical leaching. Under the optimum conditions, the proportion of Cu extracted into leachate during 2 hours was 79.1%, and that of Zn 27.2%. Precipitation of high-grade Cu sulfide served to extract the metals from the leachate, and Cu extraction was 99.7%. Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM) are used to investigate Power Draw in a laboratory scale tumbling mill. The mill is run dry in batch mode at different speeds using mono-size charge of glass beads, and is mounted along with a torque transducer to measure power. Particle tracking information from PEPT is used to reconstruct the motion of glass beads and infer the overall charge behavior, while DEM is employed to simulate particle motion and interaction, with collision mechanics calculated using the Hertz-Mindlin contact model. For PEPT and DEM data, the product of torque and average angular velocities in discrete cells are accumulated to obtain mill power. This method is found to be within statistical agreement with measured power for all tests. Spatial distributions plotted from this approach highlight the regions of the mill that draw the greatest power. A second technique to obtain Power Draw from DEM data which sums particle forces against the mill geometry is similarly found to accurately predict mill power with lower statistical error. South African is a repository of significant deposits of a variety of minerals. The Citigroup confirms this assertion with an estimate of in-situ valuation of US$2.5 Trillion. The mining sector plays an important role in the South African economy. In addition to the mineral resource base South Africa has other comparative advantages. Firstly, South Africa retains major mining companies that participate globally, including Anglo American, Goldfields and De Beers. Their global involvement offers much to the local mining sector and the broader economy. Secondly, government established research councils. The Council for Geoscience (CGS) was established to manage the Geological Survey of South Africa, including the reduction of geo-scientific investment risk. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) promotes industrial development, including mining technology development. Mintek undertakes mineral research from mineral examination of ores, to extraction and refining technologies and manufacture of end products. Thirdly, South African universities teach and conduct research along the mineral value chain. They have increased their minerals graduates? capacity, thus advancing knowledge and skills. Knowledge and technical progress are behind productivity growth and emergence of competitive advantage. The research and development (R&D) capabilities of industry, science councils and universities, working in unison, will enhance the competitiveness of the South African mining industry. The National System of Innovation (NSI) requires multi-disciplinary, collaborative research. Key R&D elements, including skills and expertise, funding and facilities, must be available to implement a long-term national strategy or programme. Improved international collaboration and partnerships between government, academia and industry driven human resource development (HRD), ultimately develop the critical mass for inter-generational skills requirements. This trend requires an expansion of research collaboration programmes. Decisions involving investments and collaborative actions pertaining to R&D in the sector necessitate an analysis of the South African mineral value chain R&D capability. This paper analyses the evolution of R&D capability from exploration to refining, tertiary education, science councils and industry. The political economy of the evolution of this capability is analyzed in relation to the central role that the South African government plays in creating an appropriate supporting environment and related initiatives to enhance R&D and innovation. As ore grades decline, ore deposits get harder and mineralogical complexity increases, metallurgical skills are more important than ever to ensure that today?s mining operations are operating efficiently and profitably. Yet specialist undergraduate degree programs have all but disappeared and metallurgical skills training for graduate engineers in the workspace if often haphazard. In response to this situation, specialists at the JK Centre in Queensland, Australia, have put together a professional development program designed to fast-track skills development for early career metallurgical professionals. The program, called ?MetSkill ® ?, is offered as a group training package for young metallurgists in the workplace. It is centred on a meaningful technical investigation negotiated between the JK Centre delivery team and the client company. As well as learning about project management and data collection and analysis, the participants study specialist topics such as comminution, flotation and mineralogy under the tutelage of senior research and consulting professionals. The technical investigation provides an opportunity for immediate practice of these new skills and JK Centre specialists are on hand to provide feedback and support throughout the program. The participants are employed across different operations in Australia and the Asia-Pacific, and although they occasionally come together for group training activities they are often separated by considerable distance. Specialist educational professionals from The University of Queensland have provided an innovative web platform to support collaboration and communication between all participants. This paper will describe the MetSkill ® program in detail, as well as providing a report on its initial roll-out to 2 groups of Australian graduate metallurgists in 2012

This paper will underpin the future development of intellectuals having greater understanding of patent law and legislation, IP rights, and innovation. To understand this idea, I present a case study of China?s progress in the last 31 years in the rare earth research, innovation, and simultaneously patents area. Rare earth elements (REE) are at the centre of high technology and are the next wave of world innovation. Much of modern society depends on rare earth elements through their use in computers, lasers, telecommunications, iPods, medical technology, military applications, and so on (Long et al, 2010). The rare earth research, a large research body is being provided by Chinese sources. China devoted three or four university centers to the study of rare earths (Lifton, 2009). These measures are all designed to keep China at the forefront of REE production, materials, technology, and innovation. As a result in the last fifteen years there has been a shift from a US-dominated REE industry patents to Chinese patents. The world must identify strategic areas of rare earth innovation and provide funding to firms and universities that conduct such research. Not only research and innovation is vital but filing patents and preserving IP rights for research and innovation is even more important. We (rest of the world) need a comprehensive strategy to guide the development of patent and IP rights for research and innovation. The froth phase plays an important role in the flotation and upgrading of the final concentrate. At present, the techniques that have been used in the mineral industry to measure the froth recovery have limitations. The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of the froth in an industrial flotation cell. A unique device has been developed which is capable of decoupling the froth zone from the pulp zone. It consists of two concentric tubes. The inner tube acts as a dropback collection chamber or catcher. The particles that detach from the froth phase fall directly into the catcher and are collected as froth dropback. The froth recovery measurements were carried out in a rougher bank of a copper concentrator treating sulphide minerals. The dropback device is designed so that it can be immersed into a plant size flotation cell and plant froth recovery measurements can be taken at any given time. During the experiments, the bubbles laden with valuable mineral particles entered the device from the plant flotation cell, subsequently rising to form a froth layer at the top of the device. The particles that detached from the froth zone were collected in the dropback collection chamber whereas the concentrate sample was collected by a launder. By drying, sizing and chemical analysis of the concentrate and dropback samples, the froth recovery, was estimated on the basis of the valuable component. Despite increasing demand, the supply of silver is limited by its inadequate recovery from ores. Due to its scarcity in nature, its high ore variability and complex mineralogy of current silver deposits, its recovery by mineral froth flotation presents a real challenge for process engineers. A silver ore often contains significant amounts of five to ten different silver minerals and knowledge of the mineralogy is a necessary precursor to flotation testing. In this work, a complex silver ore was treated by using batch laboratory flotation, in an effort to find the best experimental conditions to obtain the optimal silver recovery. Mineralogical characterization of feed samples was conducted using a combination of tools, namely the mineral liberation analyzer (MLA) and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), which indicated that most of the silver occurred as ?invisible? silver in pyrite. The pyrite assay of the ore was approximately 4%. The ore was processed in two flotation stages. The first stage, sulphide flotation, aimed to collect a sulphide mineral rich concentrate; then a non-sulphide flotation stage was performed by adding sodium sulphide and collectors to the remaining material in the cell, with the objective of obtaining a pyrite rich concentrate. To reach the target recovery of silver from this ore, various variables were altered. In the first stage: mixed collectors, activators, dispersants, and mainstream inert grinding were assessed. In the second stage, the conditions for sulphidization and subsequent flotation were both investigated. From the grade recovery curves for silver and sulphur it was possible to observe a similar metallurgical behavior for both elements, supporting the results given by the mineralogical characterization. Blue dust is a high grade soft haematite material containing 96.14% Fe2O3 transformed into magnetite (Fe3O4), when it is subjected to planetary ball milling in the presence of iron powder as reducing reagent. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Laser particle size analyser have been employed to characterize various samples collected at various milling times to know the phase evolution, particle size distribution and morphology of particles. X-ray diffraction studies reveal the formation of magnetite phase at the optimum milling time of 40 hours. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) study demonstrates, that sample obtained at 40 hours of milling time exhibits saturation magnetisation of 14.757 emu/g whereas the starting material used in this study shows only 1.0425 emu/g. Artificial vision systems are increasingly used to assist humans to perform different tasks in different areas. These systems are able to recognize patterns in complex images, which can provide multiple data. Currently, vision systems are used in both; monitoring traffic - which uses radars for vehicular plate recognition- as in metallurgical and food industries for strict quality inspections. Their use in mining occurs in measuring the speed of froth over the lip of a cell, in determining the shape and size of pellets, in obtaining from the tendency of mineral content and as a replacement for laboratory analysis of particle size. With this advanced tool, it is possible to achieve significant improvements in quality, productivity, and especially in reducing costs in pelletizing plant of iron ore. The objective of this paper is to contemplate the current situation of image analysis in the pelleting plants and glimpse at the potential applications that are being developed. This paper also presents the conception and implementation of an automatic control system of the pellets size distribution applied on a pelletizing plant of iron ore. The article demonstrates the strategy used for measuring the size distribution of the iron ore pellets, based on image analysis and the strategy implemented on advanced process control, which shows substantial gain on plant performance.

The basic objectives of current EU waste policy are to prevent waste and promote re-use, recycling and recovery to reduce negative environmental impact (2008/98/EC). In this paper, we focus on drivers and barriers for sustainable development by decreasing amount of waste and increasing material efficiency. Main target is to understand what are the most efficient drivers for environmental friendly decision making for reasonable consumption and use of raw materials. Environmental control instruments usually mean those actions the regulatory authority uses to control and limit environmentally harmful behavior of companies. A major change in the environmental control system took place in the 1980s with the focus moving from specific environmental issues to the environment as a whole. The environmental control system i.e. the legal (administrative), economic and informative instruments focuses on prevention. Before and still, the legislation is one of the main drivers in improving material efficiency. In this paper, we focus on drivers and barriers for effective industrial material use, and mainly on drivers. The objective of this study is to analyze how the drivers are working and are there any possibilities to influence on those. Our aim is also to introduce few examples of the existing supply chains and the drivers for better environmental performance and material efficiency. These examples are also compared with ideal reference scenarios. Our main research question in this article is: ?Are the financial issues the most important driver for environmental friendly strategic decisions?? In addition, retell the story from another perspective: ?The most important barrier for environmental friendly innovations seem to be the investment cost, the high risk involved in committing capital to unproven technology.? Other drivers, like the corporate social responsibility, stakeholder pressure, and general public pressure, will also affect the final decision. Africa is ripe with opportunity for the mining industry. The continent has large, and relatively unexplored mineral deposits, and recent high economic growth rates have meaningfully improved the political, economic, and infrastructural environments. However, these opportunities are accompanied by significant risks, including resource nationalism, uncertain regulation, corruption, and continuing political instability (up to and including war). Forward-looking companies actively manage these risks by creating a sense of shared purpose with the countries and communities that own the resources, using tools such as stakeholder analysis, local narratives, scenario planning, and constituency engagement. They also measure socio-economic impact to insure the creation and demonstration of shared value.

The challenges of nature for the recovery of metals for a sustainable future continue to present in diverse ways. Base metal deposits are becoming lower grade and more complex. Rare earth metal demand is soaring and must certainly be met from new sources outside of China. Precious metals have soared in value due to increased industrial usage and the importance of these metals as financial instruments. Many of the future sources of precious metals are complex and difficult to process. The field of hydrometallurgy plays an important role in providing technology for extraction of these metals for a sustainable future. Selected examples from the base, rare and precious metals fields will be used to illustrate how current developments are providing metals for our future. The recovery of rare earths by beneficiation, leaching, purification, precipitation will be described from a multi-mineral deposit in Canada. The recovery of metals from complex base and precious metal ores may be accomplished using chloride ? assisted high temperature pressure leaching. Finally, by way of example, the enhanced Galvanox? process for treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates using silver-activated pyrite as a catalyst will be illustrated. This process offers a viable alternative to the conventional smelting of chalcopyrite copper concentrates.

The dynamic behaviors of the air bubbles in the dense gas-solid fluidized bed have a significant effect on the performance of dry coal separation. The combined method of experimental measurement and numerical simulation were conducted to conduct the research of the mean diameters and rising velocities of the bubbles in the fluidized bed. The calculation models of mean diameter and rising velocity of the single bubble were proposed. The results indicate that the models of the mean diameter raised by Rowe (1976) and the rising velocity raised in this work could be used to predict the bubble dynamic parameters in gas-solid fluidized bed. With the Geldart B type of magnetite powder as the medium solids and while the gas velocity of 1.5Umf=U=2.2Umf, the mean bubble diameter along the bed height is 36mm<Db<45mm, and the mean rising velocity of the single bubble is distributed in 40~65cm/s. The results of experimental measurement, numerical simulation and model predication provide well agreements finally. Based on the uniform fluctuations of air bubbles diameters and their rising velocities, the separation experiments of 50~6mm dry coal using the mixture of 0.3~0.15mm magnetite powder and <1mm fine coal as medium solids were carried out. The results show that the probable error, E is 0.06, which indicates a good separation performance by using the gas-solid fluidized bed. Thiol collector mixtures are commonly used in the flotation of base metal sulfides and platinum-bearing ores. There are synergistic benefits claimed for these collector mixtures, with mixtures lowering total dosage requirements, improving coarse particle recovery and the rate of flotation. Some of the secondary collectors are known to have frothing effects. Therefore, a previous study aimed to decouple froth and pulp effects and considered only the bubble-particle attachments in the pulp. This was achieved through microflotation experiments, where various ratios of the ethyl and isobutyl chain lengths of xanthates, dithiocarbamates and dithiophosphates were used as collectors. Results from these experiments showed a marked increase in galena recovery using mixtures of xanthate with either dithiophosphate or dithiocarbamate. In the current study, the froth phase was introduced in the form of batch flotation studies to determine whether benefits noted during microflotation experiments would be carried through to a more realistic froth flotation scenario. The findings show that there was no significant difference in the flotation recovery between the best single collectors and mixtures of these collectors. In addition, single collectors that behaved poorly in microflotation experiments showed good flotation performance in the batch flotation experiments. The differences between the microflotation results and the batch flotation results are attributed to differences in particle froth stabilizing properties and/or differences in energy input between the microflotation and batch flotation cells. In heap leaching the transport of the acid from the drippers to the surface of the ore particles is a major factor in the overall performance of a heap. This flow behavior is complex as the flow is unsaturated and occurs along a tortuous set of inter-particle channels and connections. Previous modeling of this system has used equations from oil and ground water flow to model these systems, but the applicability of these models with the larger particles found in typical heaps is suspect as these systems are not necessarily capillary dominated. In particular, as the characteristic particle size goes from below to above a few centimeters, the flow changes from capillary to gravity dominated. This means that typical heap leaching heaps cover this interesting, but complex, transitional fluid flow regime. In this paper a set of experimental studies of this flow, including PEPT (positron emission particle tracking) based tracer experiments, highly accurate liquid holdup measurements and axial dispersion experiments using salt tracers will be presented. In this study, flow through mono-dispersed particle beds was carried out. In particular, the hysteresis in the liquid holdup as the liquid flow rate into the particle bed is varied is investigated, since this hysteresis means that the relationship between flow rate and holdup is history dependent, an effect not included in models currently used to describe fluid flow in heaps.
