Thirty years ago it was possible to locate a quarry site for crushed rock for concrete aggregate by finding the nearest solid rock bluff accessible by road, But times have changed and the location of a quarry site to furnish crushed rock for concrete aggregate now has become rather complicated, Although both sand and gravel can be used for aggregate, this discussion will be confined to crushed rock in the regions around a metropolitan area. Let us assume that a consultant has been retained to advise on the desirability, and the possibility, of opening a new quarry within a given area. The problems are geological and ecological. Since the geological problems are simpler, they will be discussed first. Generally, the first step is to make a market study of competitive aggregate sources within the projected area. Assuming that the quality of aggregate to be sold by competitors as well as their mining costs will, within narrow limits, be the same, the problem becomes essentially a study of haulage costs from established quarries into the projected new area. Since haulage cannot be effected along straight lines and since each quarry operator may have different unit haulage costs, a map showing lines of increasing cost intersecting points on roads available for truck haulage radiating from competitive quarries can be rather complicated. Belt conveyors have proven themselves for many years as a dependable and low cost method of handling bulk materials at high flow rates. The success of a belt conveyor system greatly depends on the initial loading of the material on the belt. If the material is loaded on the belt at the center, at approximately the same speed and with minimum impact, then most of all belt conveyor problems disappear. Proper belt loading is primarily determined by the engineering and design of the conveyor transfer point. This paper will establish and discuss some general design criteria required for proper loading and transfer of materials from one conveyor to another. Specific attention is given to loading points, chutes, skirt board length and general design of transfer structures.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes experience and past research on methods for sealing abandoned areas of a coal mine and areas from which the pillars have been wholly or partially extracted. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 requires that such areas be ventilated or sealed with explosion-proof bulkheads, but the present study indicates that bulkheads alone cannot isolate areas in a coal mine in which methane and other dangerous gases have accumulated. Gas-air exchanges between sealed and open areas must be controlled.

An industrial minerals review involves an attempt to assemble field and statistical data which are obscure, elusive and incomplete. Often, when me statistical data are available, combining or lumping of commodity values conceals the value of specific items. Personal knowledge of the minerals known to occur in the area of concern, combined with whatever available published data may be compiled, together with careful use of several extrapolation methods, may yield an acceptable summary review of the industry. However, it is particularly hazardous to speculate on future trends and economic aspects because of the many unpredictable variables which may affect the industrial minerals business. Among these variables are the effects of diverse geological conditions, the impact of technological changes (including new uses for minerals not formerly considered industrial types), changing socio-economic factors (including growing environmental controversy), use of substitutes and even recycling of some of the industrial minerals (for example, building materials, lime, etc.). My main objectives are to reveal, as accurately as I can, the state of the in¬dustrial minerals situation, and the effects of possible future developments on this industry in Idaho. Where the words...industrial-tyke minerals, .are used in this discussion, reference is made to selected metallic and nonmetallic minerals and related materials, as well as rock (Table I). Industrial minerals known to be present in Idaho may be listed under general use categories as in Table 1. Some of these commodities are being marketed, have been marketed in the past, or occur in potentially marketable quantities. Mineral fuels are neither mentioned, nor are they considered important in Idaho. Based upon our present knowledge and lack of known, economically valuable occurrences of these commodities, they are considered insignificant (Idaho Bur. Mines and Geology, 1964). Idler engineering, operation, and maintenance cannot be covered in depth in a short paper. Therefore, this will be a general look into the subject matter in light or the present-day technology. Depending on the source or reference used, belts for handling bulk material underground came into being between 1900 and 1920, while strip mining appeared in the thirties. The conveyor belt speeds in that era were in the 300 rpm to 500 rpm range. Belt speeds or 600-700 rpm were in vogue in the thirties, and the early sixties saw speeds or 800-900 rpm. Today, speeds or 1000 rpm are not looked at with dismay; in fact, speeds or 2000 rpm are being discussed. Among the driving forces moving the bulk materials handling industry to these greater heights have been the mining operators and engineers. Their appetite to increase output, yield, and reduced per-ton costs has constantly challenged the bulk material handling industry to develop products capable or handling these increased capacities. One or the products affected by this movement is the idler. Apart from the conveyor belt itself, it is one or the most significant parts or a conveyor system because or the sheer numbers needed in an installation.

Higher employer costs and increased employee benefits will result from the current sweeping revisions of the un-employment insurance system now receiving consideration before Parliament. The new legislation, the Un-employment Insurance Act, 1971, will substantially increase the unemployment insurance costs of many employers through an increase in the level of employer contributions -generally, employer contributions will go to 1.4 times employee costs -as well as by extending coverage to many classes of employees now exempt. Under the new legislation, executives, technicians, teachers, institutional workers and others will be covered, and eligible for the higher benefits which it provides. For the first time, absence from work because of illness or accident may qualify individuals for unemployment insurance benefits.

Introduction The title of my paper is satisfyingly broad and allows me to touch lightly or dwell at length on virtually any aspect of mining, while endeavouring not to trespass on the subjects of other papers to be presented. However, at this stage in our world history when for the first time we are beginning to take conservation and the welfare of future generations more seriously, I want to concentrate mainly on the question of whether or not there will be the resources of minerals available to sustain mankind's progress in the generations ahead. Metals and the Population Problem The supply of raw materials is of course only one of the fundamental problems that will face future generations: if we assumed that the world population would continue to increase at the present explosive rate, then I believe we can say with certainty that other fundamental problems of much greater significance would arise long before a shortage of raw materials - or other substitutes -had any impact on the progress of mankind. Thus, I must start this paper with the assumption that some equilibrium in population will be arrived at before these other problems overwhelm the world. Will the Metals Run Out? At the 75th Anniversary Meeting of this Institute in March, 1947, Clinton H. Crane, President of St. Joseph Lead Co., prophesied that for the next 100 years there would be enough copper, lead and zinc for every essential need. He defined a need as essential where the qualities of the metal in that use were irreplaceable. Today, except for one or two cases such as lead in lead-acid batteries, few metals have qualities that cannot be provided either by another metal or by another material. It is more a question of what the engineer or manufacturer is prepared to pay for special qualities as compared with using cheaper materials and perhaps a less satisfactory design.

The general distribution of metal deposits in the Canadian Cordillera can be related to its tectonic evolution. The Canadian Cordillera is naturally divisible into five longitudinal tectonic belts within which rocks are broadly similar in type, age and history. From west to east they are the Insular, Coast Crystalline, Intermontane, Omineca and Eastern Marginal belts. Seven classes of metal deposits in the Canadian Cordillera are defined and their characteristics described. These classes are skarn, porphyry, massive sulphide, stratiform, magmatic, copper in basic lavas, and vein deposits. Maps showing the distribution of medal and metal-group concentrations serve to illustrate the relations in space and time between mineralization and geologic evolution.

In the last decade or so, the importance of effective preventive maintenance controls and practices has taken on a new and accelerated emphasis. Advances in technology and changes in equipment and product designs impose more precise and demanding standards of quality, productivity and customer service at a very rapid pace. Daily, it is becoming more apparent that in order to fulfill current requirements, existing manufacturing practices and associated control programs must also be upgraded and expanded. This is particularly true in the field of maintenance services. As production and quality standards become more demanding, effective equipment maintenance takes on more importance and becomes more difficult to sustain. In modern plants, the failure of a single equipment component can shutdown a complete production line causing interruptions to operating and shipping schedules that result in costly downtime, dissatisfied customers, and reduced profits. These costly experiences can be minimized with an effective maintenance program that provides maximum equipment reliability and minimum downtime and readily adapts to revision and change. As in every business venture, the primary objective of a mining operation is to make money for those who supply the venture capital. Therefore, all decisions concerning the operation of the mining operation should be made in light of the resulting effect on profit. The ultimate control is on profit, but the process is controlled, for example, by aiming for a recovery or concentrate grade knowing its effect on profit. The normal procedure used to determi.ne the profitability of a venture is to "present worth" all costs and incomes back to some arbitrary year zero. Every company has formed a management decision as to what it will require as a minimum return before it will undertake an investment. Once the economic analysis is completed, investment will be made only if the venture shows a positive present worth. If two alternatives are available, the alternative with the larger positive present worth is the one chosen. The same principles can be applied to the selection of a production schedule.

The effects of the injection of dry limestone additives into boilers for the sorption of sulphur dioxide have been studied in pilot and full-scale systems. The effects of such injections on boiler mass particulate emissions as well as collectability characteristics of the fly ash and reaction products are presented. Implications of the effects on the design and economics of particulate collectors, in particular electrostatic precipitators, are discussed.

For mining and exploration, and indeed the entire mineral industry, the first century of AIME has ended with far more problems than it began. Paradoxically, most of these problems have arisen not because, the industry has been unsuccessful, but rather because it has succeeded too well. Whatever the public demand for minerals over the past 100 years, it has somehow been met-and met at a price well within the public's ability to pay for the products. But as AIME moves into its second century, the past successes of mining and exploration are beginning to levy a tax on the future. Prospectors have already found most of the rich and ready ores, and miners have dug them out. New mineral assets grow progressively harder to come by, and as they do, the need for them grows inversely more pressing. How and where and at what cost can adequate supplies be found? How and at what cost can they be mined from heretofore inaccessible recesses deep underground and under the seas-or from vast surface tonnages containing only minor values? And once they are found or won, how can these assets be husbanded for generations to come? How also can they be extracted without injury to the land, air and water on which we and our successors must depend? And what constructive use can be made of the incidental materials now treated merely as wastes-sometimes at great expense?

The clays in Eastern Washington occur in a variety of forms and are extracted for uses in Face Brick, paper coatings, and aggregates. Not in large volumes in comparison to other areas, not even from impressive large mines. However, mans utilization of these clays has progressed from historical clay tablets to the present technically oriented manufactured products of today. White Face Brick, perhaps the whitest produced anywhere is the unique product produced by INTERPACE CORPORATION's Mica Plant from these unusual clays. It is this basic characteristic feature of the clay's in the Mica area that differentiate them from the other clay's in this belt. ORIGIN The significant properties of clay's used in Face Brick are plasticity, fired color, fired strength, dry and fired shrinkage, the PCE or Pyrometeric Cone Equivalent, and extrudability. Testing clay's for these properties is standard laboratory procedure. No two clays are alike, and seldom can one clay be substituted for another. Mica White Clays respond favorable to all these properties, but more especially, the Mica Clays fire to a brilliant white color, from almost the natural state. The geologic history of Eastern Washington is largely conjectural because of the absence of rocks representing segments of geologic time. The oldest rocks in this area are the argillaceous and arenaceous sedimentary rocks which have been slightly metamorphosed. These rocks have been correlated with the Belt Series of the Pre-Cambrian age, although some may be older. The centennial celebration of the AIME provides an opportunity to review some aspects of developments in mineral exploration since 1871 and to reflect on the changes that have occurred. During this period seven Factors have fundamentally altered the procedures, techniques and philosophy of mineral exploration. Although most of these developed gradually, and unheralded, they have drastically altered the art of exploration and discovery. 1. ADVANCES IN MINING AND MILLING The development of huge shovels, draglines, trucks and track-mounted drills, to replace the wheelbarrow and single Jack has drastically expanded the rate of production for both underground and surface mining. The development of selective flotation has had a far-reaching affect on mineral exploration and has made it possible to extract metals from the metallurgically complex deposits discovered years before. These developments have reduced the costs of mining and treatment, and have transformed material into ore that was considered waste one hundred years ago. These advances have permitted exploration for progressively lower grade and larger mineral deposits.

The Bureau of Mines investigated mine subsidence caused by recent underground mining, estimated the extent of damages, and formulated a procedure for evaluating subsidence costs. On the basis of the quantity of material removed from beneath the surface, bituminous coal mining currently causes more extensive subsidence problems than mining of other minerals; costs are highest in areas such as western Pennsylvania where urban and suburban development and related types of land use conflict with mineral recovery. The Bureau of Mines estimated subsidence costs, including surface damages and control costs, for a 12-county area in western Pennsylvania for 1968. Total surface damages attributable to the underground production of bituminous coal in the 1-year period were $295,000; in addition, 12.4 million tons of coal, valued at $4.3 million, was left in place to minimize potential surface damage. Of the total subsidence cost ($4.6 million), $2.7 million was classified as external or social costs, not reflected in the market value of bituminous coal; this averaged $0.05 per ton of production, or slightly less than 1 percent of the market value.

This report presents a structural-mesh-generating computer program for the two-dimensional finite-clement method of mine structural analysis of single and multiple openings in nonhomogeneous rock mass. This program greatly reduces the amount of input data required and the chances of error which otherwise are large owing to the large amounts of data and the complex mesh involved. The program description, a user's guide, example problems, and program listing are included.

When we grow up in an urban environment and choose to become a part of a way of life, it is sometimes difficult to appreciate the cost of this decision in terms of pollution. Explained in this article is our dependence on technology and the amount of pollution that technology produces. Inventories of air pollution on both a personal and a national basis are given so that the reader may judge the magnitude of the problem. In doing so, it is hoped that the reader will understand the need for a responsible attitude toward pollution by everyone and how he can make a personal contribution.

Canada's production will significantly increase in the next decade. However, although the outlook is bright, iron ore producers cannot be complacent. Instead, we must weigh the factors that have brought about the development of the Canadian iron ore industry and examine the probable changes for the next decade that will affect its growth.Looking ahead in the 1970s, competition will be severe. Pressure on prices will continue as new sources of supply bid for long-term contracts and as steel producers continue to develop mines around the world. Rising costs will make these pressures more severe. We must balance the growth of the world's steel makers with the emergence of new supplies of iron ore. The iron ore industry is now part of a new era in which demand and supply are intermeshed, and the developments around the world are acting on the Canadian iron ore industry's future."

Many recent mine developments in North America are located in remote northern regions with extreme winter temperatures in the range of -20oF to -60°F. In addition, many locations are subject to very heavy snowfall. This paper discusses some of the key considerations in the planning and design of mine plant buildings, particularly concentrators, located in these regions. SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS The subject is considered under three main headings: I. Building Out line and Structural Frame 2. Wall and Roof Materials 3. Foundations The plan outline of a mine plant building will naturally be governed by the scope and layout of the process equipment it contains. The selection of roof profile, on the other hand, will generally depend upon a number of factors extraneous to the process e.g. snow conditions. When these factors are considered for concentrators in cold locations, a flat or stepped roof will usually be more economical and suitable than a sloping roof. The materials normally used for the structural framework of concentrators are the same as used for other industrial buildings, namely steel, concrete and wood.
