THE airborne geophysicist is a busy man these days. In his plane he may have the airborne magnetometer, the airborne scintillation counter, and the airborne electromagnetic surveying system. Each of these is an independent tool, but all require additional auxiliary equipment for locating the aircraft in space: recording altimeters and Shoran or aerial cameras. Now there is still another piece of equipment, the airborne magnetic gradiometer, an accessory to the magnetometer. To understand its uses, consider the function of the magnetometer itself. Aside from detecting magnetic ore, the airborne magnetometer finds greatest use in spotting intrusions of igneous material. Where there is enough contrast in magnetic susceptibility of igneous rock and adjacent formations, it outlines the intrusion. Certain minerals also influence the magnetometer directly, but with the exception of magnetite and possibly one or two others, their effect is weak and can be detected only when there is sufficient ore and the magnetometer flight passes very close to it. An igneous intrusion of infinite depth with vertical sides is represented on a magnetometer record by an anomaly, as in Fig. 1. Amplitude of the high depends on susceptibility contrast of the igneous rock. Generally speaking, the edge of the intrusion lies below the point of inflection of the curve, and this point, where the curvature changes from positive to negative on the magnetometer profile, would be near A in Fig. 1, with a counterpart, of course, on the other side. Location of the contact is one of the principal objects of the survey, but finding the precise point is not always easy, as inspection of the curve near A will show. Mineralization is often found at the contact zones, as at B. Magnetic effects, if detected, may be small, as in B', and when superimposed on the anomaly due to the instrusion they are very difficult to discern and analyze. Furthermore, if these small fluctuations are to be perceived by the magnetometer the vertical scale should be large. This increases the slopes of the anomaly and makes detection of small deviations and inflection points even more difficult. The airborne magnetic gradiometer was designed to help overcome these difficulties. What it presents is the first derivative of the magnetometer record with respect to time, that is to say, the slope at any point. Fig. 2 represents an actual magnetometer record (solid line) with the corresponding gradiometer record (dashed line) superimposed. Both records read from right to left. Vertical lines on the original magnetometer record are automatic steps designed to keep the pen from going off scale. The slope of any curve is greatest at the point of inflection or point where the curvature changes sign, and this point is a maximum (or minimum) on the gradi- ometer. The chief advantage of the gradiometer is that maxima or minima are much easier to see and to locate precisely; hence an accurate location for the point of inflection can easily be found. Note that points C and D are more sharply defined than C and D'. Similarly the small fluctuations of the original record, so important to the interpreter, are far more clearly shown at E, F, and G, than on the original record at E', F', and G'. Though not necessarily highs and lows on the gradiometer, they do show up clearly what would take a painstaking analysis to detect on the original magnetometer record. Will the gradiometer have a particular configuration which indicates an orebody? Not necessarily. The total intensity curve, or original magnetometer record, can display an orebody in various ways, depending on dimensions, orientation, latitude, and composition, as well as on direction, flight height, and instrumental sensitivity of the traverse. Where the total intensity can take on so many different shapes the gradiometer must vary too. It is generally recognized that interpretation of total intensity magnetometer records requires an expert analysis; the gradiometer can be of considerable assistance to the expert but it does not replace him. Mechanism of the gradiometer is simple. A Leeds & Northrup recorder in the aircraft records the magnetic gradient simultaneously with the total intensity, which is on another recorder. Fiducial marks are put on both records simultaneously and the speed of the paper through the recorders is kept the same on both. This makes it possible to place one record over the other for direct comparison. In the laboratory the flights are positioned on a map. Maximum and minimum points on the gradiometer, which can then be posted on the map at their proper locations, may be expected to fall along a trend crossing the direction of flight. Trends should indicate the edge of an intrusion, or some other important features, and when superimposed on the total intensity contour map help greatly to locate the points of inflection, or line of zero curvature.

A preliminary mineral-dressing study of five samples of East Texas limonitic brown iron ores was conducted as part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop and extend domestic resources of iron ore. The samples were considered to be typical of ore currently being mined and beneficiated by the Lone Star Steel Co. and Sheffield Steel Co. The objective of the research was to investigate those mineral-dressing unit operations that might recover some of the fine iron lost in current industrial wastes or perhaps improve the recoveries when applied to the ores as well. Since current industrial beneficiation practice yields a washed limonite analyzing 41 to 45 percent iron, higher grade concentrates were not sought in this laboratory study. Laboratory investigation included washing and sizing, reduction roasting, and subsequent magnetic separation of the finely ground roasted materials. The results showed that laboratory recoveries of over 80 percent of the iron were possible, for the ores investigated, at concentrate grades comparable to those expected from cur-rent industrial beneficiation practice. Owing to the rapid growth of the perlite industry in recent years, the Bureau of Mines has received numerous requests for information relative to the possible harmful effects of breathing dust resulting from the processing and use of perlite. As published information on the composition of perlite is rather meager, consisting chiefly of conventional chemical analyses, samples of crude and expanded perlite from 9 deposits in 6 Western States were studied. Crude perlite ores were examined petrographically and analyzed by chemical, spectrographic, and X-ray-diffraction methods. Sized crude and expanded perlites were analyzed chemically for total free and combined silica content.

A study has been made to deter~r~irre how the behavior of a water drivee reservoir changes as a function of the permeability of the formation and as a function of the size of the aquifer. The effect of pressure maintenance programs on the rote of nat11rn1 water influx is also studied, (IS well as the influence on the influx of the position of water injection we1ls with reference to the oil-water contact. The results are determined by the use of an electrical reservoir analyzer and are plotted as families of curves of pressure, natural water influx, and water injection vs time or cumulalive production. Two size aquifers are studided. One is limited with a 36-inile radius, and the, other approximates an infinite reservoir. The field remains the same in all respects for the completed. study except that the permeability is changed to agree with that assumed for the aquifer. 1 N TR ODUCTI ON this study was undertaken in -dcr to determine how the pres- sure decline and water influx of a water drive field would change as a function of the rate of fluid withdrawals, as a function of the permeability of the formation, and as a function of the size of the aquifer. The effect of pressure maintenance programs on the rate of natural water influx was also studied as was the position of water injection wells with reference to the oil-water contact. The information has been determined by the use of an electrical reservoir analyzer1, sometimes referred to as a Carter type analyzer. This instrument is an analog type computer which can be set up to represent a water-drive oil field. It can reproduce the past performance of the field in terms of analogous electrical quantities when the proper circuit analog of resistors and condensers has been determined, also, it can determine the future behavior for any method of production which may be selected, or permit the comparison among several different methods. Although most applications of the reservoir analyzer"" have been to thc study of specific field performance, it is intended to use the analyzer here to help understand how various reservoir characteristics effect the final performance of the field and to sec under what conditions water injection will be of benefit and to what extent. Within the oil industry the performance of water-drive reservoirs was first described analytically by LV. Hurst' and M. Muskat2 for certain types of boundary conditions. The solutions of the equations developed involved products of exponential functions and Bessel functions. Later publications by Hurst4 and van Ever-clingen" and the hooks of Muskat6 gave further information on reservoirs with other boundary conditions. They also presented rather extensive curves and tables to help evaluate the analytical expressions involved. A rccent series of publications by Chatas. bascd on the work of Hurst and van Everdingen, gives quite complete charts and tables of data to evaluate the pressure decline or water influx in infinite or limited radial reservoirs. and in linear reservoirs. The curves in all of these publications are given in dimensionless form

FIFTY years ago the Utah Copper enterprise at Bingham was just getting under way. An epic in metal mining was in the making. Throughout the West the bonanza deposits were approaching exhaustion and most ore still went direct to smelter. But concentrators were shortly to be constructed for treating milling grade ores, and most important, the pilot plant for the Utah Copper enterprise was being built that year at the mouth of Bingham Canyon. The same decade was to see development at the Inspiration mine in Arizona of the most important new mining method for 50 years to come—undercut block caving. Although the average grade of ore being mined has been declining for 50 years, and wage rates and prices of supplies have been greatly increased, the mining industry has continued to grow and to prosper. Technology has advanced to a point where minerals can be mined under the most severe conditions. The hardest rock can be drilled and broken and the heaviest ground handled. Large or small, an ore-body can be mined successfully, at any desired rate of production. It is possible to pump great volumes of water and to ventilate the most extensive workings; air conditioning has made practicable the mining of ore where the rock temperatures are beyond those that can be borne by man. Mining today in the U. S. is a huge earth-moving operation. In 1953 nearly 2 billion tons of material were mined for direct use or for processing. Stripping at open-cut mines totaled about 1.7 billion cu yd. Table I gives relative tonnages of the branches of the mineral industry in 1953. In addition to the solid materials moved, 350 million tons of petroleum and 340,000 tons of gas were produced in 1953. Fifteen million tons of salt and 5 million tons of liquid sulphur were pumped from wells. An appreciable amount of copper was recovered by leaching old mine workings and dumps. Total value of minerals produced in 1953 was $14.4 billion: oil and gas $7.6 billion, coal $2.6 billion, nonmetallics $2.4 billion, and metals $1.8 billion. Formidable problems face some branches of the industry today, especially pertaining to increased output tons per manshift. The time has come when these problems should be reappraised. With current wage rates, the industry no longer can afford to pay men to do manual labor. It should be recognized, also, that the miner is a skilled worker; efforts to promote the dignity of his calling and his pride of accomplishment have yielded beneficial results. Mineral deposits occur under widely varying conditions. In most instances the degree of support needed by the roof and walls is the deciding factor in selection of an underground mining method. The degree of support needed, in turn, is governed by natural physical characteristics of the ore and its enclosing rocks. Mine operators, of course, learn to judge ground by observation, and an experienced mine boss generally can anticipate what will happen following any given mining operation. A more scientific approach, however, would be advantageous in most cases. More should be known about the strength of the ore and the enclosing rocks, more about stresses set up in the ground when ore is removed, and more about the mechanics of moving ground. Better understanding would work both ways: first, favorable rock conditions could be fully utilized for more efficient mining, and second, hazards of rock falls could be minimized, loss of ore in mining reduced, and expenses caused by ground pressures and subsidence lowered. In general, mining comprises breaking the ore or rock in place, supporting the mine workings, and transporting the ore to the surface. This latter is a materials handling problem. Ventilation, of course, must be provided, and the mines must be kept free of water. Development work at some places is the most important cost item in extracting ore. Drilling and blasting remain the usual practice for breaking ore or rock from place except, of course, at block-caving mines. The drilling and blasting practice at a mine must fit the mining method. This publication, an abstract of a progress report covering an investigation of hazards in thermal coal-drying plants has been prepared according to the suggestions and recommendations of a committee6/ appointed by J. J. Forbes, Director of the Bureau of Mines, when the original report was reviewed at a meeting of representatives of the mining industry, operators of coal-drying plants, coal-mine workers, and the Bureau in Washington on May 6, 1955. The investigation on which the report is based was made in accordance with action taken at a previous conference in Washington on May 19, 1954, called by Director Forbes to consider what should be done to prevent explosions and fires in coal-drying plants. Scope of Investigation The investigation was planned to obtain information considered essential for properly appraising fire and explosion hazards in different types of coal driers. A questionnaire sent to Bureau personnel provided preliminary information on coal-drying facilities at more than 270 preparation plants. Information on methods used in operating different types of driers, with their furnaces, fans, cyclones, and other auxiliary equipment, was obtained by personal visits or conferences with the operators at 13 plants. Factual data on operating temperatures, composition of the drying gases, air flow, dust loading of the air or gas currents, use of water sprays, auxiliary air controls, and other factors were obtained by conducting full-scale tests at six different plants and making laboratory investigations with samples of dust and gas collected during the tests.

Magnesium alloys containing nickel, nickel and manganese, lithium, lithium and manganese, and lithium and aluminum were investigated. Melting, casting, and mechanical working techniques and the heat treatment of various compositions were studied. Amenability to cold and hot working was shown for many compositions. The magnesium-nickel and magnesium-nickel-manganese alloys failed to develop superior mechanical properties and were very low in resistance to corrosion. The magnesium-lithium series, although entirely plastic, had low strength properties. The addition of small amounts of aluminum to the Mg-Li base did not affect greatly either the ductility or the strength; further additions developed increased strength, but only at room temperature, and the alloys became brittle with age. Continued study, concentrating on the ductile lithium-rich beta phase as a base composition for ternary and quaternary systems, is recommended.

To extend or delimit the known ore reserves of the Black Wonder manganese de-posit, the Bureau of Mines undertook an exploration project consisting of trenching, underground excavation, long-hole drilling, and sampling. The mineralization is spread over 6 square miles containing numerous small individual manganese deposits. There has been only small production from some of these deposits; however, simultaneous operations from many such small deposits could contribute considerably to the production from the district. A custom mill to treat oxide ore for battery use was built near Patterson in 1942 by the General Dry Batteries Co., Inc. It operated during World War II and was removed in 1944 when the manganese mines ceased operation. Except for some small experimental shipments, there has been no activity in the district since that time.

FOR THE PAST seven years Mr. W. Simpson, Chief Mechanical Inspector for the Nova Scotia Department of Mines, has carried out exhaustive field trials of non-destructive inspection equipment in the coal mines of that Province. This work has demonstrated the usefulness of a number of types of non-destructive inspection when used for periodic inspection of hoisting and haulage equipment in the coal mines of Nova Scotia. As a result, the Dominion Coal Company has instituted a programme of regular preventive maintenance inspection ?by a special staff of qualified and trained men. The purpose of this present paper is to describe how non-destructive testing techniques are used on ropes, axles, couplings, and other hoisting and haulage equipment, how these methods are being used in other industries, and the expected benefits from intelligent and properly organized use of these techniques in the coal mining industry.

This circular is a study by the Bureau of Mines of 346 accidents in underground iron-ore mines of the Lake Superior district from June 1949 to August 1954. These accidents caused 354 lost-time injuries, including 28 fatalities and 2 permanent-total disabilities. The accident reports were analyzed by the Bureau to show the causes of injuries and the time charges and unsafe practices or conditions that caused the accidents. Also shown are the times of occurrence, ages of the injured by job classification, and experience of the injured in mines and on the job being performed when hurt. Detailed information is presented on approximately 14 percent of the total number of Lake Superior district underground mine accidents that resulted in lost-time injuries during the period covered. These facts are presented to aid accident-prevention measures in underground mines and as a record for measuring future safety accomplishments.

INFORMATION is available on the effect of stress on permeability, coercive force, and hysteresis for a variety of materials' but for the technically important grain-oriented 3 pct Si-Fe' the stress effects are not adequately covered in the literature; in addition, most of the stress data do not permit estimation of what would happen to the 60 cycle watt losses of the material under stress. Direct measurement of these effects therefore has been made and appears to be of considerable theoretical as well as practical interest. Losses were measured on the central 25 cm portion of 40~3~0.035 cm samples which could be stressed in a small tensile machine built for this purpose. Under tension the following effects, illustrated in the figures by a particular example, were observed: 1—"Unstrained" material of commercially acceptable loss level shows no change or a small increase in loss at low elastic stresses. For the sample shown in the figures, this is illustrated during the initial run, where a 7 pct increase is observed (Fig. 1). 2—There is no additional change in loss when the sample is further strained up to the elastic limit (Fig. 1). Within that limit the loss-stress curve is reversible. This is not illustrated in Fig. 1. 3—Even in the plastic range only small increases in loss are observed as long as the sample is kept under stress (Fig. 2, point N); often no increase can be observed (Fig. 1). 4—A large increase in watt losses is observed after removal of the stress subsequent to plastic deformation (Figs. 1 and 2). 5—All, or nearly all, of the foregoing increase in loss due to plastic deformation can be eliminated by a reapplication of tensile stress but returns upon removal of this stress. This is illustrated in the third run (Fig. 3). This run remains within the elastic limit and shows the reversibility of the stress-loss curve under this condition. These findings have been confirmed on large Samples (approximately 200~10~0.035 cm and larger) except that under 1 no initial increase in loss was ever observed on these. The accuracy of the watt loss measurements is of the order of 1 pct. Neither bending of the sample in the tensioning device nor a redistribution of flux along the width of the sample accounts for these results. They therefore must be explained on the basis of either a change in the domain configuration due to stress or a change in the domain wall mobility. Acknowledgment The assistance of Mr. Robert L. It has been established that molybdenum sesquisulphide, not molybdenite, is in equilibrium with molybdenum metal and sulphur vapor in the vicinity of 1100°C. The S2 pressure for this system has been obtained using the Knudsen orifice method and the standard free energy for the dissociation of S2. THIS work was undertaken to help in determining the thermodynamic properties of the molybdenum sulphide which is in equilibrium with metallic molybdenum and sulphur vapor in the temperature range 1025" to 1150°C. From the results of MontoroL and of Parravano and Malquori' molybdenite would be expected to be in equilibrium with molybdenum metal, while the results of Guichard indicate that a lower sulphide must be in equilibrium with the metal. Thus it was concluded that the problem warranted reconsideration, especially in view of the suspiciously low temperature independent term for the standard free-energy function for the reaction MoS² Mo + S,. The reaction was calculated and duly noted as being low by Richardson and Jeffes,' using the data of Parravano and Malquori.' Experimental Method The general method used in this investigation is that of the Knudsen orifice method for the determination of equilibrium pressure. The apparatus and technique are similar to those described for the determination of the vapor pressure of silver.% owever, a closed-end McDanel tube instead of fused silica was used to maintain the vacuum, a molybdenum effusion cell with a replaceable lid was employed instead of a silica cell, and a titanium getter maintained at run temperature was used to assure that no oxidation of the molybdenum or molybdenum sulphide was taking place. All runs were made at a residual pressure less than 10-5 mm Hg. The data are given in Table I. Runs 1 through 13 were obtained using molybdenite, analyzed 98.5 pct, from the Molybdenum Corp. of America. The remaining runs were done with a sample from the Climax Molybdenum Corp. which was their grade No. 3 and analyzed 59.87 pct Mo. The weight loss of the cell during heating up and cooling down was subtracted from the total weight loss of the cell during the run. Also, when the tem- perature was changed, the Knudsen cell was placed in the vacuum chamber and heated at temperature for several hours in order to allow the sulphide and the metal to adjust their compositions to the equilibrium values, to desorb or adsorb gases into or from the molybdenum cell itself, and to desorb any water from the molybdenum sulphide or molybdenum powder inside the cell. Water may have been adsorbed inside the cell because, after each run, the top of the cell was removed and the material in the cell was stirred to insure that a layer of molybdenum metal would not build up and obstruct the passage of sulphur vapor into the gas phase. It was established that the molybdenum cell alone decreased in weight an inappreciable amount when heated at the highest run temperature for long periods of time. There are two questions to be answered before the data in Table I can be used to calculate thermodynamic functions: 1—Which molybdenum sulphide is in equilibrium with molybdenum metal and sulphur vapor? 2—What sulphur species are present in the vapor phase? It can be assumed safely that no molybdenum is vaporized, since its vapor pressure is almost negligible at these temperatures. It will be shown subsequently that no sulphide of molybdenum is volatile. A high resolution autoradiographic study of the diffusion of a nickel isotope (NP3) into copper in the temperature range of 650° to 925°C, with particular emphasis on grain boundary diffusion, has been made. The extent of grain boundary diffusion is a function of the grain boundary angle and the diffusion temperature. The ratios of the grain boundary diffusion coefficient to the lattice diffusion coefficient ranges from 104 to 105. The activation energy for grain boundary diffusion decreases with increasing grain boundary angle. STUDIES and reviews&apos;-8 of metallic diffusion have indicated that grain boundary diffusion is a common phenomenon but quantitative studies of the many variables involved are not numerous. The present work was concerned with determining the influence of the crystallographic orientation of the grain boundaries and the temperature on the extent of boundary diffusion of nickel into copper. The study involved essentially three steps: 1—the production of grain boundaries of known crystallographic orientation, 2—the determination of the extent of diffusion into the boundaries, and 3—the analysis of the resulting data in terms of the usual diffusion concepts. The grain boundaries investigated approximated the simple tilt variety having l° of freedom. They were produced by controlling the solidification from a melt of Cuprovac (a high purity vacuum-melted copper obtained from Vacuum Metals Corp.) of a pair of seed crystals so that the bicrystals of copper produced had a common <100> axis. By rotating one seed crystal relative to the other, a simple tilt boundary was produced. The angle of rotation between the two crystals is the grain boundary angle 8, or what is sometimes termed the misfit angle. In all, some 16 boundaries ranging from 2" to 72" in 5" to 10" steps were investigated. The crystallographic orientations were measured with the use of both X-ray and optical goniometric techniques. The <100> axes in the crystals were found to be parallel within 2" to 3" with the exception of one crystal (8 = 12") in which the axes were 6" from being parallel. All bicrystals showed evidences of sub-grain structures. Laue analyses showed that these subgrains differed in orientation up to a maximum of 2". Because of these variations, and some curvature in the boundaries, the grain boundary angles listed are actually average values and deviate from the 1 o of freedom boundaries. This information circular is one of a series the Bureau of Mines plans to publish describing the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Big Buck mine is one of the larger underground uranium-vanadium ore mines on the plateau. The mine is about 39 miles southeast of Moab in the Big Indian mining district, San Juan County, Utah. The Big Buck claims were located late in 1947, when uranium mineralization was discovered in the Cutler formation at its outcrop along the escarpment that forms the west side of Big Indian Wash. Charles A. Steen made the first major discovery of uranium ore in the Chinle formation in the Big Indian mining district on July 6, 1952, when 14 feet of high-grade uranium ore was encountered in a diamond-drill hole drilled on his Mi Vida claim. The Big Buck ore body now being mined by Standard Uranium Corp. is a southeast extension of Steen&apos;s original discovery.

The investigation reported in this paper is one of several included in a broad program of developing new or improved concentration processes for the oxidized and partly oxidized deposits of lead and zinc, A sample from the Playter lease, Newton County, Mo., containing pyromorphite was successfully concentrated by fatty acid flotation to a grade of over 62 percent lead. Owing to the presence of a high content of slime-size values, the overall recovery of lead at that grade was limited to 44 percent. DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY OF PROPERTY The mineral pyromorphite is a chlorophosphate of lead containing 76.4 percent lead, and, although it occurs frequently in association with other lead minerals, it is considered a minor ore mineral of lead. The manner of occurrence of oxidized lead minerals, including pyromorphite, which frequently are no larger in grain size than the clay with which they are found, militates both against development of a simple beneficiation process and high recovery. The profitable exploitation of such deposits depends not only on a successful treatment procedure but a highly favorable metal market as well. For these, and perhaps other reasons, very little research has been done on the recovery of pyromorphite from its deposits.

lsoembrittlement curves depicting the influence of time and temperature in the range 800&apos; to 1260°F (425&apos; to 680°C) on the development of embrittlement in a commercial chromium alloy steel and a commercial molybdenum alloy steel are presented. Two distinct regions of embrittlement occur in the chromium alloy steel: I—at 800&apos; to 1000°F (425&apos; to 540°C) and 2—in the region just below the lower critical temperature. Embrittlement is most pronounced at 800&apos; to 1000°F, decreasing very rapidly with increasing temperature above this region, only to increase again as the lower critical temperature is approached. The data suggest two distinct modes of embrittlement with possible superposition of the two modes at extended embrittling times in the temperature range 1100° to 1150°F (590&apos; to 620°C). While the molybdenum alloy steel shows little susceptibility to embrittlement at 800&apos; to 1000°F (425&apos; to 540°C), considerable embrittlement may occur just below the lower critical temperature. THE subject of temper embrittlement in alloy steels has received considerable attention in the last few years. Points of view on the mechanism of embrittlement differ, however, resulting in part from the incompleteness of the data developed and in part from the speculation regarding the susceptibility of plain carbon steel to temper embrittlement. Libsch, Powers, and Bhat1 carried out short-time embrittling treatments on an AISI 1050 steel and demonstrated that hardened plain carbon steels are quite susceptible to embrittlement when tempered in the range from 850°F (455°C) to the lower critical temperature. The isoembrittlement diagram,&apos; representing the embrittling characteristics of this steel, is reproduced in Fig. 1. It is evident from the shape of the curves shown that embrittlement in plain carbon steel increases progressively with both temperature and time in the embrittling range. A comparison of the isoembrittlement diagram for AISI 1050 steel with that presented by Jaffe and Buffum&apos; for an SAE 3140 steel shows that up to 930°F (500°C) the isoembrittlement characteristics of the plain carbon steel are similar to those of SAE 3140 steel, although the embrittlement is much more severe in the latter steel. Above 930°F (500°C), the rate of embrittlement in the plain carbon steel increases continuously with increasing temperature; whereas, in the SAE 3140 steel, the embrittlement rapidly decreases. The influence of alloying elements upon embrittlement during tempering thus appears to cause a decrease in embrittlement above the region of maximum embrittlement, i.e., 850" to 1000°F. The question naturally arises as to what effect individual alloying elements have upon the embrittling characteristics of the plain carbon steel. Current knowledge on the influence of alloying elements on temper brittleness may be found in the review papers of Hollomon" and Woodfine. Hollo-mon," from the results of other investigators, has shown that, in general, the amount of embrittlement increases with increasing alloy content (except for molybdenum and possibly tungsten and columbium). Jaffe and Buffum," by a comparison of the embrittlement in a plain carbon steel with that of a SAE 3140 steel postulated that the presence of alloying elements in moderate amounts tends to retard the development of temper brittleness. It is difficult to determine what effect chromium has upon temper brittleness, since most of the information available has been based on the combined effect of other elements with chromium, particularly nickel and manganese. However, Wilten, and recently Jolivet and Vidal,&apos; Vida1, and Woodfine have reported that chromium steels are temper brittle, that the embrittlement is reversible with a maximum rate of embrittlement at approximately 975°F (525"C)," and that the susceptibility increases with increasing amounts of chromium. Taber, Thorlin, and Wallacel" have found a large embrittling effect with increasing chromium content in a medium C-Mn-Ni steel. But Hultgren and Chang," from their experiments conducted on synthetically prepared ternary Fe-C-Cr alloys, could not conclude that these alloys are susceptible to temper embrittlement. However, on addition of manganese or phosphorus, these Fe-C-Cr alloys became susceptible, from which fact they concluded that the embrittlement developed in chromium-bearing Fe-C alloys is due chiefly to the presence of these elements. Considerable data are available to show that molybdenum decreases the susceptibility of steel to temper embrittlement. However, its effectiveness in preventing or decreasing embrittlement appears limited to its presence in small amounts. Vidal" has shown that a plain 2 pct Mo steel was susceptible. Hultgren and Chang" also have shown that molybdenum additions in excess of 2 pct to synthetically prepared Ni-Cr steels did not prevent embrittlement. Jolivet and Vidal&apos; and Lea and Arnold found that molybdenum reduced temper brittleness. Lea and Arnold further stated that molybdenum decreased the rate of embrittlement rather than the total amount of embrittlement, whereas Preece and Carter" have shown that the presence of molybdenum greatly reduces the equilibrium extent of the change at a given temperature but does not appear to influence the rate of embrittlement. There appears to be very little information as to how molybdenum by itself affects the temper brittleness susceptibility of a plain carbon steel.

LARGE-SCALE production of zirconium by the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines at Albany, Oreg., is an anomaly that justifies some explanation. The reduction of titanium tetrachloride with magnesium in an inert atmosphere, as perfected by Dr. W. J. Kroll before 1940, aroused renewed interest in zirconium, and in 1945 development work on this metal was initiated at Albany under Dr. Kroll&apos;s technical direction. Preliminary results were promising, and in February 1947 a pilot plant with a weekly capacity of 60 pounds of zirconium-metal sponge was put in operation. Shortly thereafter the Oak Ridge National Laboratory of the Atomic Energy Commission requested production of 1 ton of zirconium-metal sheet, with the provision that it have a low hafnium content. The Bureau of Mines was furnished with a. supply of Brazilian baddeleyite ore, containing less than 1 percent hafnium with respect to zirconium, from which was made about. 2,700 pounds of relatively low hafnium zirconium sheet of 0.080-inch thickness for test purposes. This was accomplished by melting zirconium sponge in a graphite crucible, hot-rolling the ingot in an iron sheath, and finishing by cold rolling. Concomitantly the Oak Ridge Laboratory developed a method for separating hafnium from zirconium; and, in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission and the Bureau of Ships of the Department of the Navy, a, larger pilot plant was erected to produce zirconium from very low hafnium zirconium tetrachloride furnished by the Commission. Pilot-plant work on producing zirconium tetrachloride from zircon sand and baddeleyite was discontinued. Production of zirconium sponge in the larger pilot plant of 500 pounds per week capacity was begun in June 1949.

For 11 years, under authorization of the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of April 5, 1944 (30 U.S.C. 321-325), and amendments, the Bureau of Mines has carried on an extensive research and development program to establish methods for producing oil from coal and from oil shale. This act was passed by the 78th Congress primarily because of the stress of wartime demands for liquid fuels to supply our armed forces during World War II. The act was progressively extended by the 80th and 81st Congresses, as later peace-time demand for oil and oil products continued to increase.

WHEN THE BUREAU OF MINES was created in 1910, the organic act had as one of its main provisions the following: That it shall be the province of said bureau and its director, under the direction of the Secretary of the Interior, to make diligent investigation of the methods of mining, especially in relation to the safely of miners and the appliances best adapted to prevent accidents, the possible improvement of renditions under which mining operations are carried on, the treatment of ores and other mineral substances, the use of explosives and electricity, the prevention of accidents, and other inquiries and technologic investigations pertinent to said industries, and from tinge to time make such public reports of the work, investigations, and information obtained as the Secretary of said department may direct, with the recommendations of such bureau. The nationwide nature of the health and safety work of the Bureau of Mines has given its representatives an opportunity to study and report on matters pertaining to health and safety in mines and related operations from the time the Bureau was established to the present. Regular annual reports and numerous additional papers and reports have been published each year to place on record and to make available the information gathered. While the basic purpose of this bulletin is to describe health and safety reports for the period January 1947 through June 1955, a selected number of earlier publica¬tions that are believed pertinent for reference purposes are included.

TODAY, man uses, at will, the land, the water, and the air to transport himself and his goods everywhere across the face of the world. He no longer thinks with wonder of the magic of conquering these elements - he takes his mastery of them for granted. He is, however, constantly striving to squeeze more and more efficiency from each mode of transport. Man&apos;s first method of transporting himself and his goods was, obviously, himself; then he acquired his first beast of burden - woman. Most other two-legged female animals carried their young around clinging to their fur. Human mothers were, generally speaking, furless and their offspring less &apos;Prehensile, and so slings and other trappings were invented to carry young children. Man&apos;s inventive genius soon adopted these devices for carrying other burdens, and for countless centuries woman carried all in order that man could walk unencumbered except by his weapons. Later other ?beasts of burden were trained and used, including dogs, horses, oxen, camels, etc. Man also discovered quite early that he could drag along the ground more than he could carry on his back.
