R. R. Knobler and F. E. Albertson—Following the testwork done by Thunaes and Spedden, a Sullivan deck plant was built for the Colquiri mill. This plant started to operate in April 1945 and continues in successful operation. Since May 1950 the Colquiri mill has operated with a completely revamped flowsheet at a rate of 1000 tons per day. The old Sullivan deck section was retained with this new flowsheet. The "slime plant" in Colquiri consists of one 12-cell Denver No. 18-Sp. Sub-A flotation machine, one 16-ft and one 12-ft hydroseparator, six five-deck Sullivan-frames and six shaking tables for cleaning up the Sullivan deck concentrates, as well as 12 Deister plus three Plat-O tables on which the fine sands, which are not treated on the S-decks, are concentrated. Only —325-mesh fines are treated on the Sullivan decks. The combined hydroseparator overflows are fed to the S-decks. From 1946 to 1949, i.e. with the "old" flowsheet and an average mill feed of 800 tons per day an average of 45 tons per day was treated on four Sullivan rougher frames. The two additional frames were used as cleaners. At times, up to 90 and 120 tons of slimes were treated successfully on this Sullivan deck installation. The average operating data for the S-deck section in Colquiri for the year 1949 were as follows: The tests reported in this paper indicated a tin recovery of 42 pct. The actual plant results for 1949 show a 54 pct tin recovery from the Sullivan decks. The total average quantity of tin produced from the S-deck section in 1949 was 15 tons of tin per month. This corresponds to 3 pct of the total mill recovery. The difference between the 6 pct overall recovery-increase expected after the tests in 1943 and the actual plant results given for 1949 is explained as follows. OFFICIAL Washington is gravely concerned over the adverse military situation caused by the all-out intervention of the Chinese Communists in Korea. What the policies of the United Nations and the United States will be in the new crisis is unknown. However, Stuart Symington, chairman of the NSRB, set the general pattern for mobilization in the near future when he said that this country would move from a "light gray to a dark gray mobilization." The implications of accelerated mobilization for the mining industry are particularly apparent with respect to the manpower situation. Revised policies recently initiated for the recall of reservists may be abrogated, in which case key personnel in the mining industry may face calls to active duty with insufficient consideration given to their indispensability to national defense in their present positions.

For several years the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Air Materiel Command, U. S. Air Force, has been studying zirconium alloys. A preliminary survey of these alloys has been completed and reported as a Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations. 4/ Originally the purpose was to determine the suitability of zirconium alloys in medium-temperature applications. However, data also were obtained on other properties of these alloys, and later the scope was broadened to include amore detailed investigation of a selected group. The zirconium-titanium system was one of those chosen. The Bureau of Mines has been instrumental in the commercial development of both of these metals and has constructed pilot plants for the production of titanium at Boulder City, Nev., and for zirconium at Albany, Oreg. Both elements are in subgroup A, fourth series of the periodic table, and therefore have many properties in common. Since both have similar atomic structures and lattice dimensions the possibility of extended mutual solubility seemed likely. Inc transition-point diagram of Fast indicated that the two metals are completely miscible in all proportions in both the alpha and beta forms.

J. F. Elliott—This is an excellent piece of work and makes a chemical metallurgist more enthusiastic than ever about what can be done with multicomponent systems, if we have satisfactory data. I have a remark to make on the interpretation of fig. 5. First, I will comment on the problem of activities in solutions. The iron-sulphur system has in its phase diagram an intermediate solid phase FeS. The occurrence of an intermediate phase is normally associated with negative departures from Raoult's law over a portion of the activity curves in the liquid. (Perhaps it would be better to reserve the phrase "departure from ideality" to departures from Raoult's law line rather than to departures from Henry's law line). Fig. 5 indicates that the deviation of the sulphur activity curve from the Henry's law line is negative;

Introduction During World War II years, the magnetometer was used by various field parties of the Geological Survey of Canada, specifically in the search for chromite, a strategic war mineral. Throughout the summer of 1944, Professor J. W. Ambrose used the instrument experimentally on eight separate projects (1). Since then, several members of the Survey have come to consider its use to be of valuable assistance in the season's mapping. Dr. C. H. Stockwell, in particular, regards use of the magnetometer as a necessary part of detailed geological survey work. Throughout the field season of 1949, the magnetometer was used by Dr. Stockwell?s party as an aid to mapping in detail, to the scale one thousand feet to the inch, the south-west quarter of Dasserat township, Temiskaming county, Quebec. The principal geophysical project that was undertaken was the location of the Horne Creek fault and the Diabase fault in the area approximately midway between Arntfield and Kearns, on the Quebec side of the Interprovincial border. The location of these faults on either side of this central area was known. The Horne Creek fault is a subsidiary fault to the Cadillac 'break' which extends ?westward from Val d'Or through Cadillac to beyond Larder Lake. It lies to the north of that major fault zone and has a general southwesterly trend.

May I first of all say that I am fully conscious of the great compliment paid to me when I was invited to accept the Presidential Chair for this current year. I realise that it is an onerous task by reason of the fact that the Chair has been occupied in the past by so many able and distinguished men, and I realise also that I have been set a standard which is hard to emulate. NO MORE important question has come before the coal-mining industry in many places, especially in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, than prevention of stream pollution by mine drainage. Available information on acid mine drainage in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania indicates that a pollution problem must be solved in any program of anthracite mine drainage. The major problem concerns satisfactory disposal of the daily average mine-water discharge of 327,000 gallons per minute (g. p. m.), or 472 million gallons per day (g. p. d.), containing a free-acid load of 431 tons or a total acid load of 934 tons a clay as H2S04. This report indicates the scope of the problem and gives some suggestions concerning its solution.

A. J. Shaler—I should like to congratulate the authors on the presentation of this paper, which we have been awaiting a long time. The view they have taken of the sintering process, namely that voids are comparable to particles of a second phase capable of dissolving to a slight extent in the metal phase, is an interesting but dangerous one. Pines has given a first-order solution of the problem and Has predicted a decrease in the concentration of pores near the surface. The authors of the present paper have experimentally demonstrated the second-order effects, that is, the diffusion of the space phase between voids of different sizes, and also the movement of atoms from highly curved parts of a void to less curved regions of the same void. I have recently calculated the rate of vapor-phase transport within odd-shaped pores in copper at 850 °C and found that probably at that temperature volume flow is the more rapid shape-changing mechanism. The authors of the present paper have found that at 1000°C, vapor-phase transport is dominant. There is no disagreement here, I think. The dominant phenomenon can easily be different in different temperature ranges and with different pore shapes: I used a cylinder going to a sphere, not a tricuspid going to a "triple cuspidor." But there is some danger in the other art of the explanation, that is, in the study of the diffusion of vacancies from a pore to its neighbors and to the outside. A vacancy is very different in dimension from an atom. When it moves, it carries a field of elastic strain. This has to be taken into account. A concentration gradient of vacancies can cause them to diffuse. But in the absence of such a gradient, they can be made to diffuse by a field of stress. What happens in some of our experiments, and it is most noticeable in the shrinkage of synthetic cylindrical pores, like the tubes we have been working with, may be broken down into the following steps. (1) The presence of a surface establishes a vacancy concentration gradient, as Dr. Kuczynski and the present authors have shown. (2) Vacancies then diffuse in order to decrease this gradient. (3) In so doing, they cause an elastic field to be built up in such a direction as to oppose the diffusion, so that it slows down until it reaches a steady-state rate. (4) The steady-state flow is due to the fact that the surface tension acting on curved surfaces applies a stress to the system which itself mechanically causes vacancy diffusion. What I have said is that the diffusive types of flow of the authors and of Dr. Kuczynski are transient phenomena which soon stop if the pores are large. We are then left with a mechanical problem only, and our researches have not yet disclosed just what the mechanism of flow is; it may be a slip process, or it may take place by a vacancy diffusion of the type Nabarro has de-

From July 1, 1949, to July 1, 1950, the Bureau of Mines conducted the research and technologic work on coal and coal products that is summarized in this report. The research, described in this fifteenth of a series of resumes, is presented in more detail in publications (see footnote references) that appeared during the fiscal year, though in some cases research data are given that have not been published elsewhere. Results of research in the experimental coal mine, on explosives, and on gas and dust explosions will be found in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 4228, Annual Report of Research and Technologic Work on Explosives, Explosions, and Flames, Fiscal Year 1950. An over-all view of our coal, oil, end natural-gas reserves was presented, and the future possibilities for the, production of synthetic liquid fuels from coal were delineated.3/

WITH the development of new processes for the production of synthetic liquid fuels, an extensive literature search was undertaken to uncover fundamental relationships between fluid and heat flows and the operating variables of new types of converters. Examination of published correlations revealed that considerable uncertainty existed in the correlation of the operating variables of such equipment with the pressure drops which could be expected through packed and fluidized systems; correlations proposed in the literature differed from each other frequently by as much as 75 to 100 percent. Because new processes, especially more recent modifications of the original Fischer-Tropsch process, must compete with old, firmly established processes on the basis of unit product cost, the pressure-drop correlations in the literature were considered to be too inaccurate for use in calculating the energy required to pass fluids through packed beds. The following study was begun in 1946 to develop correlations that would be suitable for the design of new equipment in which fluids are brought into contact with granular materials. To arrive at general relationships, systems were chosen that did not involve chemical reactions, and a, particular effort was made to give the correlations only in terms of quantities that are ordinarily available from general process and design specifications.

Results are presented of a comprehensive study of the characteristics of the original oil in the Weber sandstone reservoir, Rangely oil field, Colorado. Through the medium of subsurface sampling, adequately representative samples of the original reservoir oil were obtained from many parts of the reservoir over a period of 5 years concurrent with active development of the reservoir. Data of differential gas liberation, pressure-viscosity, and. pressure-volume-temperature relationships are shown for 12 subsurface oil samples. Data also are given of reservoir pressure and. temperature, composition of liberated or solution Gas, composition of 22 produced-gas samples, and Hempel analyses of crude-oil samples from 18 wells. The characteristics or physical properties of the 12 subsurface oil samples, as determined by laboratory analyses, were correlated with elevation of the top of the Weber sandstone. These relationships of oil characteristics to elevation in the reservoir show that only the oil in contact with the initial gas cap was gas-saturated at the existing pressure and temperature. The characteristics of the original reservoir oil were marked by an appreciable decrease of saturation pressure and solution gas-oil ratio and increase of viscosity and density with depth below the gas-oil contact. The composition of solution gas and of' produced was also was found to vary with elevation of the oil in the reservoir.

MORE than a year before the United States entered World War II, the requirements of the National Defense Program indicated the need for additional sources of aviation gasoline. On September 10, 1940, Dr. R. E. Wilson, Group Executive, Advisory Commission of the Council for National Defense, requested the Bureau of Mines to undertake a survey of crude oils of the United States to designate those suitable for the production of 91-octane aviation gasoline. As quickly as a program could be defined, agreed upon, and funds provided to conduct the work, the Bureau began the project. Over a period of many years the Bureau had collected samples and made analyses of thousands of crude oils produced in the United States. Although these analyses did not include octane numbers of the gasoline fraction, they provided data necessary for calculating the correlation index. This index, developed within the Bureau, is a measure of the types of hydrocarbons present in gasoline and therefore is roughly indicative of the octane value. This fund of information from Bureau of Mines Hempel analyses, supplemented by information obtained from oil companies, reduced considerably the necessary laboratory work by providing data that permitted a large number of crude oils to be eliminated from consideration. However, in the survey carried out during the last part of 1940 and the first half of 1941, 225 samples of crude oil were collected and distilled. Octane values of the distillates were determined by the Army AFD-1C method. (See page 57.) A report containing these results, together with the calculated amounts of 91-octane aviation gasoline available from these sources, was prepared and distributed to the several offices of the Office of the Petroleum Coordinator for National Defense in August 1941. In December 1942 the Office of the Petroleum Coordinator for National Defense became the Petroleum Administration for War (P. A. W.).

The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future. To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

The Bureau of Mines and the Alabama. Power Co. jointly conducted a first experiment in underground gasification of coal at Gorgas, Ala., during the fall and winter of 1946-47. This preliminary experiment showed that it was not difficult to maintain combustion of coal underground, and that coal in place could be completely gasified. It was noted that the high temperature developed by the gasification of coal in place brought about changes in overlying strata that appeared to be favorable to the process. The high temperatures caused the roof rock to become plastic, to expand, and to settle down on the mine floor directly behind the reacting coke face. These results were promising enough to warrant further investigation of the process. It was believed that if this action could be controlled properly with roofs of similar composition, it would tend to force the gas-making fluids underground against the coal faces. Plans for the second experiment were based in part on this favor-able roof action, and the successful operation of the planned initial straightline passages depended on this fact. Gorgas was chosen as the site for the second experiment for the following reasons: A tract of coal land of sufficient size was available and isolated from the main body of coal; the roof rock was similar in composition to that encountered in the first experiment; and the overlying strata were thick enough to eliminate some of the operating difficulties that had been encountered, In addition, power, water, and machine-shop facilities as well as an adequate supply of labor were available in this area, and the friendly cooperation of the Alabama Power Co. further recommended this site for the planned experiment.

INTRODUCTORY PROSPECTING for aluminum has always been, and still is, a peculiar combination of the technical with the physical approach, and 1 want to explain my conception of the term 'prospecting' when applied to aluminum, which differs in some respects from the ordinarily accepted idea of prospecting. In the early days of gold mining, prospecting was a search in the hills and the river beds for the metal, not for its chemical combinations. And so it was in the early days of aluminum, with the difference that the search for the metal was carried on, not in the hills and dales, but in chemical laboratories. Aluminum is never found in the elemental state and at that time the metal bad never been seen, but scientists of that day bad forecast that such a metal must exist and in 1807 Sir Humphrey Davy went so far as to give this unseen metal a name, aluminum, from the Greek word alumen. This word applies to our alum, and it was from alum that Davy sought to produce the metal. It is strange to think that, in laboratories throughout England and on the continent, prospecting for aluminum was busily under way by men who had never seen the metal they were searching for. Their situation was something like that of the fisherman and the 'big one' that got away. They could describe the metal, give its exact weight, and even name it, but they could not produce visual evidence of its existence. Eventually, however, the efforts of the scientist 'prospectors' were rewarded and in 1826 the metal was actually produced, possibly first by Wohler, though Oerstedt, a Danish chemist, is usually credited with the achievement.

The increasing demands for petroleum and its products and the steadily increasing cost of discovering and developing new oil fields are factors that emphasize the importance of increasing the recovery of oil from known petroleum reserves. Water flooding is a valuable conservation measure, not only preventing premature abandonment of stripper leases but also reviving interest in many areas previously abandoned. The use of water flooding as a means for recovering additional oil from partly depleted oil-bearing formations was first tried in Oklahoma in 1931. Early water-flooding operations were confined to the area of shallow Bartlesville-sand formations in Nowata and Rogers Counties, where many of the projects were outstandingly successful. The results of these operations stimulated activities in other pools in Oklahoma, and by the end of 1949 water flooding had been tried in 25 of the 49 oil-producing counties in the State (fig. 1). Approximately 33 million barrels of oil, or 1,806 barrels per acre, had been recovered by December 31, 1949, from 18,221 productive acres included in the 162 active and abandoned projects in Oklahoma by injection of approximately 449 million barrels of water.

The purpose of this paper is to call attention to certain methods which will shorten and simplify the calculation of plane tri-angulation. These methods, though not new & do not appear to have been properly publicized in the United States. The cotangent (or tangent) solution of a triangle permits calculation of coordinates in a smooth series of operations of the calculating machine with a minimum of notation. The semigraphical solution permits the simultaneous solution of a number of intersections, at one station, without the added burden of solving additional triangles. This in turn encourages more numerous field checks and more complete office computation than would normally be undertaken. Tables I and I1 show the distinct advantage which the combined use of the cotangent and the semi-graphical solutions hold over, what might well be called, the standard solution. It will be shown that the positions for the entire net in fig. 1 may be calculated without computing any distances, thus saving much computation. (2) Comparison of Cotangent and Standard Solutions: To compare the cotangent method with the standard method, the notation involved in the solution of triangle 1-X-4, fig. 1, by both methods is shown. Fig. 2 shows the given information, that is, the coordinates and azimuths of Stations 1 and 4, and angles of the triangle or the azimuths from Stations 1 and 4 to Station X. (Azimuths are used here because the author feels that they are easier to handle, but bearings may be used by those who prefer them). Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. Markets and Sources of Supply: Limestone has a number of uses in western Oregon and Washington. Among them are agricultural lime for the soils of the Willamette Valley and southwestern Washington; paper rock for the mills in such cities as West Linn, Oregon City, Newberg, St. Helens, and Salem, Oregon, and Camas and Everett, Wash.; chemical and metallurgical-grade limestone for the metallurgical plants centering around Portland, and the Tacoma-Seattle areas'; and sugar rock for the sugar refineries at Toppenish, Wash., and Nyssa, Oregon. Introduction In order to improve outputs and to reduce or hold mining costs, many attempts have been made to mechanize the getting and loading of coal in the major coal producing countries, and machines of various kinds and sizes have been designed and manufactured. Some of the most important are: Joy Continuous Miner Joy Coal Auger Goodman Mining Machine Lee-Norse Koal-Master Jeffrey Colmol Cardox Hordsecg Recovery Drill German Coal Plough British Coal Plough with agitated blades M. & C. Samson Stripper AB Meco-Moore Cutter Loader Joy Gloucester Getter The three last named are the chief longwall machines in use and the AB Meco-Moore and the Samson Stripper are doing a good job in their respective applications. It is understood that the Gloucester Getter recently installed in a British colliery also shows reasonable promise. It was felt, however, that to meet the conditions of the mines in Nova Scotia, any machine developed must have certain distinctive characteristics. It must: ( 1) Be able to cut and deliver coal in quantity and of the right sizes ( 2) Be easily manoeuvrable ( 3) Be suitable for longwall operations ( 4) Not interfere with timbers already set ( 5) Cut its own stable (6) Work on reasonably heavy gradients
