New design techniques have been developed to optimize continuous casting (CC) refractory components. The overall objective is to increase CC productivity as well as steel quality by using optimized refractory from tundish-to-mold. These techniques allow the prediction of steel and refractory chemical interactions and, thus, steel chemistry evolution as well as build up and corrosion occurrence. Specific fluido-dynamic models (CFD) have also been developed to better take into account the physical parameters at the steel/refractory interface and to optimize steel flow control. The CFD model can be coupled with refractory chemical interactions to simulate steel chemical evolution. These two different approaches result in shape and material modifications. They are completed by dedicated thermal stress analysis in order to improve thermal shock resistance. The mechanical FEA evaluations take into account specific mechanical behavior of refractory components as well as high temperature evolution of their properties.

This paper summarizes some of the results of a study of the reactions involved in the Caron leaching process and identifies the roles of the major dissolved species in the kinetics of dissolution of iron alloy particles formed during reductive roasting. Using rotating disk electrodes and synthetic leach solutions, the reduction of water with the evolution of hydrogen was found not to occur on a dissolving iron surface under typical leach conditions. It has been established that the oxidative dissolution is governed primarily by a reaction involving reduction of Co(III) to Co(II) ions. The reduction of oxygen was also found to make a significant but largely indirect contribution to the kinetics of the dissolution process. The dissolution rates of various iron-nickel-cobalt-copper alloys which simulate the dissolving alloy particles in a Caron plant were measured in synthetic leach solutions under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The initial dissolution rates of iron, nickel and the iron alloys were found to increase in the presence of thiosulphate, whereas the thiosulphate had a negative effect on the dissolution rates of cobalt and copper. It is shown that the eventual passivation of the iron occurs sooner in solutions rich in Co(II) ions. Whilst these conditions are present in the quench slurry, on-site measurements have shown that due to the very high concentration of reduced dissolved species, passivation does not occur until the slurry is strongly aerated. In the light of these fundamental findings, options for optimizing the rate of dissolution and minimizing the extent of passivation of the iron and iron alloys are discussed. Kaolin clay is heavily used in the paper industry as a coating and a filler, however to attend the specifications required by the industry it has to be processed. Kaolin is also used as a filler and pigment in various materials, such as paint, plastic, rubber etc. Some crude kaolins as mined in Northern Brazil, contain colored impurities such as iron oxide and rutile/anatase. These minerals normally are stained by iron and as a result vary from yellow to dark brown in color. The kaolin beneficiation process used in that region consists mainly of degritting, fractionation by centrifuge, high gradient magnetic separation, bleaching with sodium dithionite, filtering and drying. In some kaolin clays from that region, titanium oxide mineral occurs in fine fraction, lower than 2 µm, and so making the industrial process more difficult. The conventional method of classification and bleaching with sodium dithionite, markedly improves kaolin brightness, but has little effect on anatase removal. In fact, the fine fractions resulting from centrifugation, in many cases contain more TiO2 minerals than the original whole clay or the coarse fraction. The present work is related to purification of Brasilian kaolin clay using selective flocculation for removing its colored impurities such as rutile and anatase. This study was conducted in bench scale and it consisted of: blunging, screening, conditioning and decantation. Overflow and underflow resulting from settling of the flocculated material were then dried and submitted to TiO2 and brightness analyses. Sodium polyacrylate and sodium silicate were added to kaolin clay suspension as dispersant and ammonium hydroxide was also added to adjust pH. After degritting, the minus 44 µm fraction was conditioned with hydroxamate surfactant and then polymers of different anionic charge were added. The influence of pH and type of polymer on efficiency of TiO2 removal, as well as kaolin mass recovery were studied. The results obtained in the present study are quite promising. It was possible to diminish TiO2 content and increase kaolin brightness (ISO) from 82 to 88%.

Safe and good operation of Søderberg electrodes is dependent upon high quality electrode paste coupled with correct electrode operating procedures. Good electrode performance depends further on proper melting and densification of the electrode paste. The melted paste should form a dense and viscous layer that prevents gasses from the baking process to move upwards. Both paste cylinders/blocks and briquettes can be used, but the procedures may differ between the various types of paste products. For briquette columns the formation of the important viscous layer is obtained through melting and densification of the briquettes. By basic rheological studies of electrode paste and by laboratory tests of briquette beds at isothermal conditions we have achieved a better understanding of the melting process. The effects of temperature gradients, pressure and friction between the briquettes and the electrode casing have also been evaluated qualitatively in pilot scale experiment and in industrial scale tests. The paper shows that melting and densification starts at a considerable lower temperature than the pitch softening temperature. It is concluded that the formation of a briquette electrode column depends on parameters as temperature, briquette column pressure and the friction. Operating conditions influencing the above parameters should be defined and established for each specific furnace operation. Such factors are e.g., charging and slipping procedures, column heating and electrical conditions.

The purpose of this research was to study the calcination of lead-zinc flotation tailings from the Angouran lead and zinc flotation plant in Iran as a pre-concentration step prior to hydrometallurgical processing of the oxidised tailings. There is an abundance of these tailings in the Angouran region and making use of these tailings would help preserve national wealth and also reduce the serious problems of environmental pollution caused by the tailings. At the optimal conditions of calcining at 750 - 800¦C for 45 minutes, the sample showed a mass loss of about 19 per cent. Mineralogical analyses showed that under these conditions the carbonate minerals including smithsonite (ZnCO3), calcite (CaCO3) and dolomite (Ca Mg (CO3)2) decomposed to their respective oxides. Hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2.H2O) converted into willemite (Zn2SiO4) and this transformation postponed the formation of silica gel in the leach solution. The grade of zinc increased from 22.20 per cent to 29 per cent. These mineralogical changes resulted in desirable reactions in the acid leach process.

"Over the past 15 years, technical innovations have improved the properties and performance of monolithic refractories. As these improvements have occurred, aluminum cast-house refractory selections have changed from brick to monolithic refractories supplied as either cast in place, or precast, ""Big-Block"" installations. A review of the properties of monolithic and brick refractories is presented, as well as the technical advantages of brick for highly demanding applications. Operating conditions and issues such as temperature, alloying, corundum growth and other variables are also reviewed."

In this work, the rheological behavior of ultra-low cement alumina-based castables with addition of flake graphite and extruded graphite pellets has been investigated. Emphasis has been laid on the influence of the type and amount of carbon additions and the results are compared with corresponding alumina castable samples without any carbon addition. It is found that alumina-based castables with extruded graphite pellets have good rheological behavior and flowability with lower water demand (< 6.3%), and no segregation during the shearing of castable.

The effect of SiO2addition on the decomposition of Li2CO3was investigated at temperatures up to 1000ºC. It was found that addition of SiO2greatly enhanced the decomposition of Li2CO3. The main decomposition reaction started at around 600ºC, and completed just above the melting point of Li2CO3. The major decomposition product was Li2O?SiO2irrespective of the Li2CO3to SiO2mixing ratio while both reactants were available. It was ascertained that a liquid layer betweenLi2CO3and SiO2particles formed and facilitated the decomposition reaction. The governing reaction of the decomposition was the one between the dissolved Li2CO3and SiO2in the liquid layer to form Li2O?SiO2. The decomposition rate was independent of the Li2CO3/SiO2mixingratio until either one had been completely exhausted. When excess Li2CO3existed, it further reacted with the initial product of Li2O?SiO2to form 2Li2O?SiO2. When SiO2was found in excess, on the other hand, no further reaction took place. This is attributed to the fact that uponLi2CO3exhaustion there is no liquid phase available to facilitate further reaction. The apparent activation energy of the decomposition of Li2CO3in existence with SiO2is 198 kJ mol-1.

"A mine production locomotive, the world’s first applied industrial fuel cell vehicle, has been designed and tested in the context of a number of proof-of-concept projects supported by the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute, an international consortium of stakeholders dedicated to facilitate the commercialization of fuel cell vehicles.The locomotive’s simple electric-powered motor and controller system was ideal to study a number of requirements related to fuel cell power application: hydrogen power plant operation, underground hydrogen use, risk and regulatory requirements, production performance versus the conventional battery- powered locomotive version under measured duty cycles and production requirements, power plant design improvements for other fuel cell vehicles, and cost benefit aspects.This article will focus on the design and testing aspects of this project which has led to successful performance demonstrations of the vehicle under surface and underground conditions at two mines. It will also present information on the creation of a safe, reliable, and efficient power plant that fulfilled its design objectives, including longer productivity time for a given vehicle fill-up."

"Single-roll strip casting process is studied using computational fluid dynamics which takes into account fluid flow, heat transfer and solidification. The computational model is based on the conservation Jaws of momentum, energy and continuity. Correlation of strip thickness, solidification zone length, and puddle shape on single-roll strip casting of Al-1 %Mn is explored. Feeding pressure and roll speed are investigated. The results show that the··strip thickness slightly increases with pressure, similarly the length of solidification zone. The variations of strip thickness and solidification zone length with roll speed show a sharp decline for strip thickness and slight decline for the length of solidification zone with increasing roll speed. The constraint and free-jet flow have different feature in term of flow field. Severe turbulence is observed on the free-jet flow.IntroductionThe near-net shape casting of strip metals is a demand nowadays. The demand is particularly stimulated by the challenge to become more competitive through enhanced performance. The improvement in the existing processes and new innovative technologies are introduced by the metal industry to gain better product quality, more efficiency in energy consumption, low throughput, yield and operating costs [1-3].There are many advantages that can be obtained by the direct casting of strip. The most prominence is the elimination of hot rolling. Beside that the high rate of heat extraction associated with strip casting offers the possibility of a finer, Jess segregated cast structure. The microstructure will result in the improvement of mechanical properties compared to conventional material, or alternatively the opportunity of using grades of metal outside the normal range for continuous casting.The concept of single-roll strip casting has been difficult to commercialize, because of the complex interactions between fluid flow, solidification, shrinkage, and stress, which lead to serious quality problems. Besides that, the quality and the thickness of the strip are affected by the thermal properties of the strip, roll cooling conditions, roll geometry, and other process parameters. To understand how these parameters affect the strip formation, some researchers have modeled the process [4]."

The process utilized at Norilsk Nickel Polar Circle Division for treating slimes from the electrorefining of copper and nickel was developed in the late nineteen fifties and has survived without any fundamental changes. This technology is a combination of pyro and hydrometallurgical operations to produce PGM concentrates that are sent away for refining. The characteristic feature of the current technology is multiple-stage, extended cycle treatment with significant incomplete production, low labour and automation efficiency and poor hygiene and sanitary conditions. To eliminate all negative aspects mentioned above, specialists of Norilsk Nickel Polar Circle Division have developed a new hydrometallurgical process for treating electrolytic slimes. The main steps of the flow sheet developed are autoclave leaching of the slimes and electrochemical opening-up of a cake from autoclave leaching. The implementation of the new process will allow Norilsk Nickel Polar Circle Division to shorten the process cycle 4-5-fold thus reducing the volume of incomplete production, considerably increase labour efficiency, simultaneously improving working conditions, upgrade the final concentrate, reducing costs and increasing PGM recovery during refining and, ensure higher security of precious metals by employing automated processes and vacuum sealed units.

Since C.C. White introduced coalmine roof trusses in 1967. many different systems have evolved. Beginning in the mid 1990&apos;s, several types of bar/cable truss systems have been introduced. A new and innovative bar/cable truss recently introduced offers several advantages. By eliminating many small parts, and simplifying the installation, this new truss increases operator safely. In order to fully benefit from the new truss system, a closer look at the individual components and their interaction was undertaken to understand critical implications on preload and overall support capabilities.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) is commencing a project to develop a National Minerals Information System (NMIS) for New Zealand . Initially, the NMIS project will focus on providing public access via a web site to existing minerals related databases maintained by GNS and some other organisations. Core components are geological maps, GERM (Geological Resource Map), REGCHEM (Regional Exploration Geochemistry), PETLAB (rock catalogue), GEOCHRON (radiometric ages), mineral deposit models, mineral deposit profiles and 3D mineral deposit GIS databases. In addition to developing the web site, the project will include upgrades of some of the databases and the production of derivative products such as mineral resource and prospectivity assessments, and mineral inventories.

Since the 1973 energy crisis, high fuel oil costs have been eroding the economics of the Nicaro and Punta Gorda Plants that employ the Caron Process for laterites processing. Since 1995, Cuban crude oil production has growth dramatically, with progressive utilization in power generation, cement and nickel plants. This paper shows how Nicaro and Punta Gorda plants have been able to shift from expensive Bunker C Fuel Oil to heavy but cheaper Cuban Crude Oil of high Sulfur content and achieve a significant reduction in operating cost. Problems related to the high sulfur content of the Cuban crude oil have demanded extensive investigations of the process chemistry and novelty solutions are proposed, with corresponding changes in process conditions. Off late, the criteria of selecting the refractory have acquired a trend line aiming to a cleaner environment and the utmost importance is given to the eco-friendly approach. The stainless steel making furnaces normally use mag-chrome refractories for the obvious reasons of changing slag basicity from acidic to basic. Such refractories generate toxic fumes and compounds with hexavalent chrome, which is unhygienic if inhaled. The present paper describes the development of a chrome free alumina magnesia carbon refractory, it&apos;s different test properties, simulative testing and microstructures. The optimum quantity and distribution of carbon in the brick restricts the carbon pick-up by the steel. Bricks with the same composition were manufactured in the commercial scale and used in a stainless steel making furnaces in USA. The performance of same refractory in this furnace was quite encouraging and at present the same quality brick has become a normal practice in this furnace. Since no chromite is used in making this brick, so no toxic compounds are generated environment remains pollution free.

Field observations and sampling of land-based and submarine hydrothermal and geothermal sites show a definite link between the geological setting, fluid geochemistry and specialized assemblages of microorganisms found at these settings. Three initial sites have been chosen as a basis for these studies. The first site is located on hydrothermal vents in pit craters on the submarine volcano Lo?ihi (Hawai?i) at a water depth of 1,300 meters. The second site is within the geothermally active vents, ponds and lakes of the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. The third site extends along the chain of volcanically and hydrothermally active volcanoes of the Kermadec-Tonga arc and back-arc system. To focus our work in New Zealand, a geomicrobiology field and experimental center has been established in Wairakei, New Zealand, with the relevant genomics, proteomic and bioinformatics work being conducted at the University of Hawaii. As part of a partnership between the University of Hawai?i, the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences (GNS) and Victoria University of Wellington, a new interdisciplinary graduate course in geomicrobiology will be taught at Victoria University beginning next year. Since mineral-microbial interactions have been occurring for the past few billion years and these interactions have led to where one generates the other, a metal-bacteria research program has been initiated at GNS using arsenic-gold and other metal-bacterial interaction processes as a research objective. In this research program, we have completed the full genome of a new species of marine bacterium Idiomarina loihiensis from the Lo?ihi hydrothermal vents and identified specialized microorganisms living in pH 0.3 geothermal vent waters of White Island, New Zealand. The multidisciplinary approach to study the process of accumulation of metals in the hydrothermal systems clearly shows the path of how bacterial-mineral interaction can precipitate metal deposits. These studies will lead to new avenues for biomining, bioremediation and the understanding of the origins of life.

The oxygen activity of the ladle slag determines the reactivity towards the steel during ladle treatment. Therefore, the in situ measurement of the oxygen activity of slags can be an important tool. The applicability of an electrochemical sensor is examined in this work. The sensor measures the electromotive force (EMF) that is established between a sample of the slag phase that is immersed in the liquid steel bath and a reference system (Cr/Cr2O3). Industrial and laboratory experiments demonstrated the capability of the sensor to detect the influence of the slag components on the measured oxygen potential. Comparison of the measured values with thermodynamically calculated values shows that the measured oxygen activity is systematically too low. This was attributed to a reaction of the steel with the slag sample. To investigate this, further lab tests were performed where the slag oxygen activity was measured after the slag had been equilibrated with the steel. The measured values were dependent on the oxygen activity (aO) of the steel. For industrial applications, it is concluded that the aO of the steel should be known and that this value is necessary for the interpretation of the measured values. Many countries, provinces, territories and states in the European Union, Australia, Canada, the United States and elsewhere have begun implementing sustainability programs. Most of those programs, however, stop short of sustainable management of aggregate resources. Sustainable practices do not always have to be conducted under the title of sustainability. This case study describes how Lafarge implemented the principles of sustainability even though there was an absence of existing local government policies or procedures addressing sustainable resource management. Jefferson County is one of three counties in the six-county Denver, CO, region that has potentially available sources of crushed stone. Crushed stone comprises 30percent of the aggregate produced in the area. And it plays a major role in regional aggregate resource needs. Jefferson County is home to four of the five crushed stone operations in the Denver region. Lafarge operates one of those four quarries.

The smelting plant at Sarcheshmeh Copper complex commenced working with two reverbatory furnaces, four pierce smith converters, two anode furnace and one holding furnace having a known capacity of 420 metric tons of anodic copper according to the initial design in 1982 (1361 Iranian calendar). During the period from the commencement date up until now, the smelting plant has undergone changes for improvement and enhanced production by substituting holding furnace with another anode furnace, installing the fifth converter and utilizing oxyfuel burners on the ceiling of the reverberatory furnaces. According to the different operational processes in reverberatory, converter and anode furnaces different types of corrosion mechanisms and degradation can be observed in the refractories of copper smelting furnaces. In the case of reverberatory furnaces, the corrosion and degradation of refractories may be factors such as hot corrosion by melt, corrosion attack by the constituents of burning fuel, degradation of sidewalk exposed to mechanical stresses of the feed charge and the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the melt inside the furnace, all of which are due to the unique operational condition governing the reverberatory furnaces environment, i.e. burning fuel atmosphere, charge concentration and combination, furnace temperature, calm melt condition, etc. In the case of converter furnaces, the most likely corrosion and degradation of refractories may be due to the chemical reaction between the melt and degradation of tuyere zones due to sever movement of the melt and mechanical strikes of the punch rod. Also the most essential corrosion reaction occurs around the mouth of the converter because of the mechanical strikes by the cleaning device and thermal heat shock. Other parts inside the furnace are corroded due to the reactions between the fayalite slag and the furnace refractory. In anode furnaces the degradation mechanism is mostly related to the gaseous corrosion (penetration of natural gas or liquid gas inside the refractory structure due to the long period of reduction processes and refining stages. Finally another important factor responsible for destruction of refractories in these furnaces is the copper oxide slag together with the fume constituents of burning fuels.
