In alkaline pulp, galena is depressed by sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC), while Cu(II)-activated sphalerite exhibits a high flotability so that satisfied separation can be achieved. In addition to hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding of NaCMC with galena is confirmed by IR; only hydrogen bonding is involved between NaCMC and Cu(II)-activated sphalerite. It is also found that the greater the degree of substitute and polymerization of NaCMC, the stronger the depressive effect of NaCMC and that lower stirring speed favors the depression.

The progress results of a pilot plant study on the effects of ball top size and other mill operating parameters are reported. Test series on taconite and quartzite crude ores using a 1.7-m diam primary mill in closed circuit with a vibrating screen indicate clear trends on the improvements of mill throughput and power consumption when using larger diameter balls. Possible effects on mill liner and ball consumption as well as future research plans are discussed.

The tendency of the concentrate to ignite was studied using four techniques, namely, laminar flow furnace, fluid bed, thermal analysis and boat-in-furnace. Exothermic activity occurred at two temperatures: minor activity in the vicinity of 200¦C, major activity at 330-350¦C. The low temperature reaction was due to the ignition of a small amount of free sulphur while the major activity was associated with the ignition of the sulphide minerals, notably pyrite. To avoid ignition of the sulphide minerals, the gas temperature should not exceed 300¦C and the oxygen content of the gas phase should be as low as possible. It was shown that little of the arsenic in the concentrate entered the gas phase during drying.

Tertiary calc-alkalic to alkalic rocks of the Little Rocky Mountains in north-central Montana host low-grade heap-leachable gold-silver deposits being mined by Pegasus Gold Corporation. Total production from 1884 through 1985 is estimated at 22,625 kilograms (727,414 ounces) of gold. This includes 10,774 kilograms (346,400 ounces) recovered by Pegasus between 1980 to 1986 from 20,318,000 tonnes (22,396,000 tons) of ore grading 0.960 grams of gold per tonne (0.028 ounces per ton). Silver production during this latter period was 24,556 kilograms (789,500 ounces), but reliable silver statistics prior to 1980 are not available. Ore reserves as of January 1, 1986, were estimated to be 35,380,800 tonnes (39,000,000 tons) grading 0.720 grams per tonne (0.021 ounces per ton). Present ore production is 5,533,920 tonnes (6,100,000 tons) per year at a 0.45 to 1 waste to ore strip ratio. Current annual metal production is about 2,644 and 5,288 kilograms of gold and silver respectively (85,000 and 170,000 ounces of gold and silver respectively). The Little Rockies were formed by a calc-alkalic to alkalic magma penetrating through the Precambrian basement into the overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. This intrusive center is Dart of the Central Montana Alkalic Province, a region comprised of twelve separate intrusive centers aligned in a northeast trending belt measuring 200 by 400 kilometers (124 x 248 miles). The ore deposits are structurally controlled epithermal systems which vary from deeper narrow veins to shallow, wide, low-grade stockworks, breccias and intensely fractured "sheeted" zones. The shallow types are now being exploited. Primary mineralization consists principally of gold and silver associated with pyrite, native gold and silver, sylvanite, calaverite, and hessite. Alteration is broadly classified as weak argillic. Pyritization, kaolinization, silicification and feldspathization are the dominant forms of alteration. Fluorite is a common hydrothermal gangue mineral.

Contact time during bubble/particle collision is calculated by taking into considera¬tion the effect of bubble and particle motion, buoyant force, bubble size, and particle size and specific gravity density for different cases of collision. From this motion analysis approach for the prediction of contact times and from bubble attachment-time measurements,, fundamental aspects of flotation such as flotability, kinetics, and separation can be explained and are discussed with respect to the effects of bubble/particle motion, bubble size, particle size, and attachment time.

This paper presents the results of an extensive geomechanical testing and monitoring program conducted at a longwall panel. The field program included the monitoring of roof caving sequence and mechanism, surface subsidence, change of pillar stress, roof displacement and entry convergence, and strength characterization of the overburden rocks. The response of eight headgate pillars and the adjacent entries was monitored as the longwall face approached and passed the instrumented locations. Overburden response to longwall mining was monitored using time domain reflectometry (TDR) technology; and, the height of the highly fractured zone above the gob was determined by postmining drilling. Good correlation was found between the height of the highly-fractured zone and the TDR, subsidence, and pillar stress data. The results provide a detailed picture of the response of overburden strata and chain pillars to longwall mining. A preliminary model representing the overburden strata behavior at the test site in response to the longwall mining is proposed.

The appearance of the Cornish miner in South Australia was, in the simplest terms, the result of resource development economics. In Cornwall in the middle of the 19th century tin and copper mining was declining, while in the new colony of South Australia copper mining was booming. Experienced hard rock miners in Cornwall there- fore escaped unemployment at home by accepting an assisted passage to South Australia. There, in a colony where they were needed, they made their skills available and received good wages. There are many testimonies which support this simple thesis. Take for example the following extracts from contemporary newspapers in Corn- wall: Persons of small capital will find this an excellent opportunity for emigrating to the young and thriving colony ... The miner will find a rich and unbroken field for his operations. The Colony abounds with minerals... (West Briton, 19 July 1844) Miners make a great deal of money here (South Australia). All of them earn ú2 to ú3 per week and in many cases when they have a portion of the mine on tribute one person has cleared ú100 in a couple of months or so. (Cornwall Royal Gazette, 21 July 1848)

A method for hybrid modelling of blast vibrations in time domain is developed. Field seismograms of single shot experiments are combined with computer simulations. In this way firing times of blastholes in a pattern can be optimized due to diverse criteria like maximum velocity amplitude and frequency content of the vibrations.

The scope of work for the fast track construction of the Weeks Island Replacement Facility, Weeks Island, Louisiana included the design and construction of two salt mines. Mine #1 - An interim underground mining level consisting of a 975 m (3200 ft) incline and 3520 m of 5.5 m x 7.3 m (11560 ft of 18 ft x 24 ft) drill and blast excavation; raise boring; core drilling; roadheader excavation; complete bulk material handling facilities utilizing an existing production shaft. Mine #2 - Simultaneous with the interim mine construction a new one million ton per year underground salt mine was constructed consisting of: two 5.5 m diameter x 381 m (18 ft diameter x 1250 ft) deep shafts; 76450 cu m (100,000 cu yd) of drill and blast bottom excavation; surface and undergound bulk material handling systems (conveyors, skip loaders, shaft equipment, hoisting); ground freezing for water control for both the production and service shafts; the design of the first underground doublewall slipform installation of a dynamic bitumen shaft lining system; the emergency grouting of both the existing production shaft and the interim mining level in the salt dome; 227 mt x 64 m (250 ton x 210 ft) high structural steel production headframe; 2.2 MW (3000 hp) double drum mine hoist; service shaft headframe; and service buildings.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a flammability study of plastic ventilation ducts. Six rigid 16-in-diam fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducts from five manufacturers were examined using laboratory-scale, large-scale, and full-scale fire tests. The laboratory-scale tests included the American Society for Testing and Materials E162 radiant panel test, the E2863 oxygen index test, and the standardized small-scale flammability test (S3FT) developed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, and replicated by the Bureau of Mines. Ten-foot lengths of the same ducts were also subjected to a large-scale vertical fire test, and 20-to 30-ft lengths were tested in a full-scale in-mine fire test at the Bureau's Lake Lynn Laboratory mine. The data from the laboratory-scale radiant panel test and oxygen index test indicated that the ducts were fire-resistant, However, five of the six ducts failed the S3FT and vertical fire tests, and four of the ducts failed the full-scale in-mine tests with flame propagation rates that ranged from 3 to 10 ft/min. The results indicate the need for improved fire-resistant plastic ducts. The good agreement between the S3FT re-sults and the vertical and full-scale tests show that the S3FT provides a good indication of the flammability of fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducting under realistic fire conditions.

The efficiency with which it is expected that a particular coal may be burnt in a power station boiler significantly affects the value of the coal. Consequently many laboratory tests have been developed to provide data on the combustibility of coal. Computer modelling of coal combustion has also provided insight into limits on coal burn- out. Such modelling suggests that burnout of bituminous coal in a power station boiler will be strongly influenced by physical limits on the diffusion of oxygen to the individual coal particles. Coal chemical reactivity appears to be relatively less important. As a consequence of the diffusional limits, significant improvement in burnout is achieved either by producing less large p.f. particles or by providing sufficient furnace residence time to burn the large particles. Field data from a variety of power stations supports these cn.clusions. Burnout was also found to correlate well with volatile content for a number of coals from widely different sources. This is expected as the high vola- tile coals produce less residual char to be burned by the relatively slow heterogeneous Combustion.

INTRODUCTION During the normal course of a mining project, a feasibility study will be prepared that addresses all the aspects of the project including geology and mineral inventories, mining and geo- technical, metallurgical processing, infrastructure, environmental considerations and economic analyses. These studies are prepared for various reasons. Occasionally, a feasibility study will be prepared solely for use within a company as justification for development expenditures, however, these documents are frequently submitted outside the company either to raise funds from financial institutions or from public financing on one of the various securities exchanges. Mineral industry consultants are often called upon to participate in the preparation of feasibility studies or to conduct an independent audit and review of an internally prepared study. As the recoverable mineral resources form the foundation upon which the balance of a feasibility study is based, including the economic analysis of the project, the resource aspect of the study is examined very carefully by financial and securities organizations. The balance of this discussion is directed toward the various geological and resource estimation aspects of feasibility studies that experience has shown to be of particular importance. Much of this discussion will be directed toward open pit gold operations, although the principles are applicable to any type of deposit. 2.0 GEOLOGIC RESPONSIBILITIES IN FEASIBILITY STUDIES The principal geological effort in the preparation of a feasibility study is generally dedicated to the following areas: - Preparation of Geologic Reserve/Resource Estimates - Condemnation of Sites for Facilities, Access Roads, Leach Pads, Waste Dumps and Tailings Disposal - Collection of Geotechnical Data - Provision of Mineralogical and Petrological Data Pertinent to Metallurgical Processing - Selection of Appropriate Bulk Sampling Sites for Collection of Metallurgical Samples Each of these items will be addressed in detail in the following sections. 3.0 RESERVE/RESOURCE ESTIMATION An ore reserve estimate consists of the determination of a volume, or tonnage, and a grade for the deposit. There are numerous cases in the mining industry of projects that have experienced severe difficulties when operational ore grade, tonnage or metallurgical amenability have proven to be deficient compared to predicted estimates. An error in estimation of tonnage generally leads to more long term problems affecting mine life and production schedules. However, a significant error in the estimation of grade, particularly if mined grade is lower than anticipated, can have an immediate, and often disastrous, effect upon a project. The Comstock Lode, a world-class precious metal vein district near Virginia City in western Nevada, U.S.A. (Fig. 1), produced 8.3 million ounces (0.28 X 106 kg) of gold and 193 million ounces (6.56 X 106 kg) of silver during the period 1859 to present (Bonham and Papke, 1969). More than 95% of production was from the Comstock fault, while the adjacent Silver City, Occidental and Flowery vein systems produced about $10 million (U.S.). Within the Comstock fault high-grade ore bodies, or bonanzas, were distributed over 2.3 miles (3.8 km) along strike and persisted to >3000 feet (>900 m) below the surface (Fig. 2). Bonanzas consisted of as much as 1.4 million tons (1.3 million tonnes) of ore grading up to 1.9 oz./ton (65 gm/ton) Au and 30 oz./ton (1020 gm/ton) Ag (Table 1). Some bonanzas occurred in the main Comstock fault plane while others, including the highest grade bonanzas, formed in hangingwall frac- tures. After 1880 most ore consisted of lower-grade vein material surrounding mined- out bonanzas and large volumes of mineralized vein and wall rock in the Comstock hanging- wall that were mined from open cuts. Deep mining was hindered by large quantities of hot water and bad ground which ultimately defined the limits of underground production. The widths and richness of Comstock bonanzas strongly influenced U.S. mining law, milling and underground mining methods, and securi- ties regulations that are in practice today. Within the district Mesozoic metasedimentary rocks, metavolcanic rocks, and granitic in- trusions are overlain by Miocene volcanic rocks (Thompson and White, 1964). Veins cut all lithologies. The Blue Mountain Tunnel is a part of the Sultan River Hydroelectric Project. The Sultan Project is in the Cascade Mountain Range, approximately 56 km (35 mi) northeast of Seattle, Washington. The geology is structurally complex, consisting of graywacke and argillite, with lesser amounts of metaigneous rocks. The tunnel, excavated with a tunnel boring machine (TBM), is 4.32 m (14 it) in diameter and 6.3 km (3.9 mi) long. The average 24 hour advance was 41 m (134 it) with a maximum of 71 m (234 it). The tunnel is essentially unlined except for 383 m (1,257 it) in a low cover area and in the rocktrap. Inspection of the tunnel after one year of operation showed it to be in good condition with only a minor amount of rock debris in the rocktrap.

Although the first published optimum pit limit design algorithm by Lerchs-Grossmann dates back to 1965, the majority of the open-pit mines in the US has not as yet adopted such a rigorous optimization algorithm. Instead, the floating cone approach initially developed by Kennecott Copper in 1961 is still used today for various reasons. However, shortcomings with the floating cone algorithm, particularly for precious metal deposits with erratic mineral distributions, have provided a renewed interest in optimizing algorithms. This paper compares the performance of the floating cone algorithm with the rigorous optimization algorithm of the Lerchs-Grossman's graph theory and the newly developed maximum network flow algorithm by Hanson (1986). The maximum flow algorithm is a modified version of the logic as initially advocated by Johnson in 1968. Comparisons are made for three different deposits in terms of the total profits generated and the computation times involved. The results of the comparison show that both algorithms produced higher total profitability pits than the floating cone in all three deposits, although the increase in profits never exceeded 1 % of the base design obtained using the floating cone. Between the graph theory and maximum flow, graph theory produced consistently higher profits. The current version of maximum flow, however, cannot be modified to produce the optimum pit. Nevertheless, the authors prefer the maximum flow over the graph theory, simply because it is easy to program as well as to explain.

"The carbon-in-pulp process for recovery of gold dissolved in dilute cyanide solutions, in the presence of solids, has now replaced the convedntional processes of pregnant liquid/barren solids separation followed by Merrill-Crowe precipitation. Most plants built over the past ten years incorporate a CIP section. The process is described as cheaper in capital and operating costs, and few major start-up or operational difficulties are reported. For the purpose of the present paper, the CIP process will be assumed to consist of the following sequence of operations (Figure 1):- the slurry stream coming out of the cyanidation circuit is first screened to remove any tramp oversize material. Gold dissolution is assumed to be complete before entering the CIP circuit.- the slurry is sent into a series of agitated tanks in which it is mixed with activated carbon. The carbon particles size is much coarser than the top size of the ground ore. The tanks are fitted with screens that allows the slurry to overflow continuously into the next tank, while retaining the carbon in the tank. Slurry dilution is adjusted to prevent carbon from settling in the tanks. Agitation intensity is kept low in order to minimize carbon abrasion.- carbon is transfered from tank to tank in a discontinuous manner. According to a specific schedule, the carbon from tank one is removed, then carbon from tank two is sent to tank one, and so on, till the last tank, which is filled with regenerated carbon corning from the elutionregeneration section. The amount of carbon removed, the transfer from tank to tank, the sequence of transfer, the carbon inventory in the various tanks are parameters which are, up to a point, at th2 discretion of the operators, as long as they remove, batch wise, an amount of loaded carbon containing a similar quantity of gold to the one that has entered the circuit since the last transfer."

INTRODUCTION The planned 166 kilometer (103 mile) Metro rapid rail transit system in Washington, D.C. is being designed and constructed by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. At the present time, 112.6 kilometers (70 miles) of this system is in operation and contains 21 route-kilometers (13 miles) of rock tunneling, and 14.5 route-kilometers (9 miles) of soft ground tunneling. An additional 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) of single track tunnels in rock are planned and 6 additional contracts will consist of some 8 kilometers (5 miles) of twin tunnel, resulting in 16 additional linear kilometers (10 miles) of single track tunnel in soft ground. The Authority plans, upon its evaluation and the recommendation of the General Engineering Consultant, to include an alternative design incorporating the convergence confinement method of construction known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), for Sections E-5, E-6e and E-8a of the E-Route. The Metro system is constructed in a variety of geological conditions and crosses the boundary of two major geographic provinces. "Next to the actual mine of Les Explorations Muscocho Ltée in Montauban, Quebéc, you could find a total of 364 000 tons of flotation tailings assaying 1.4 Au g/t et 82 g Ag/t to the south of the municipality. This tailings pile is what is left of previous operations. Preliminary leaching tests on these tailings in laboratory columns gave interesting results which led to tests in larger columns in 1984 and to a pilot test on a 750 ton heap in Montauban during the summer of 1985.This paper briefly describes the columns tests performed at the Centre de Recherches minérales and the heap leaching test designed and conducted by SOQUEM in Montauban. Effective control of respirable dust is one of the most serious problems associated with longwall mining in the United States. This report describes the development and the underground evaluation of ventilated cutting drums, on a double ended ranging drum shearer. The ventilated drum uses high pressure (1,500 psi) water sprays to draw air (3,500 cfm) through 12 airmoving tubes mounted in the drum hub. The sprays draw dusty air from the face side of the drum, scrub the air, and discharge the clean air on the gob side of the drum against a deflector plate. During a three week underground evaluation, the cutting drums reduced shearer generated dust levels at the shearer operators position by 40%, at the shield operators downwind of the shearer by 55%, and at the tailgate by 55%. Cutting and loading performance of the drums were superior to the mine?s conventional drums. After the evaluation, the mine continued to use the ventilated drums to finish mining the panel. During this 3 month period, there were no mechanical or seal failures demonstrating excellent system reliability.

Two significant TBM boreability predic- tion models are outlined. Predicted advance rates are compared with actual advance rates taken from twenty case histories. The results show that a simple low cost method that uses one machine parameter and one rock parameter compares very favourably with a high cost sophisticated method which also includes information regarding discontinuities in the rock mass. The effect of rock texture on drillability is also examined. A method of quantifying rock texture has been developed and is outlined. Experimental results show that the developed TEXTURE COEFFICIENT returns highly statisti- cally significant correlations with drilla- bility data in a wide range of rock types.
