Bulk sampling is define' as the ?process of extracting a small fraction of material from a large bulk ...sufficiently representative ...for the intended purpose.? (ref. 1). Today's pressing need for simple, effective and reliable sampling systems is intensified by the growing demand for quality control as a means to cope with inflation, competition and rapidly increasing consumption of raw materials. Much has been written on bulk sampling (ref. 2 thru 9). It involves a wide range of subjects cutting across the domains of physics, chemistry, geology, mining, materials handling and processing, as well as probability and statistics. Since the problem itself is complex, any in-depth treatment cannot avoid a somewhat lengthy coverage. Of all of the related topics. Arbitrary, haphazard studies, on the other hand, can leave out important details and obscure or confuse the issue.

The electrical resistivity of rocks has been studied quite extensively, in particular, the effects of temperature and confining pressure on resistivity. References 1 through 6 at the end of this chapter pertain to electrical resistivity of rock and contain further references on the same topic. The present study is motivated by an interest in determining the in-situ properties of rock as well as the stress state of the rock and how these quantities are changing with time. Most of the previous work on the electrical resistivity of rocks has been directed toward saturated rocks at relatively high confining pressures and temperatures. The present study was oriented towards air-dry surface rock that might occur in mine pillars. The mean stress and temperature under such conditions are comparatively low. It has been demonstrated that the resistivity of rock is highly dependent upon the porosity. In fact, for saturated rocks, a relationship referred to as Archie's law has been established between porosity and electrical resistivity. In the case of saturated rock, the property that is actually being measured is the resistivity of the solid/fluid system. Since the resistivity of the fluid alone is usually much lower than that of the dry rock, it is understandable that the resistivity of a saturated rock is in general several orders of magnitude lower than the resistivity of a relatively dry rocli. For dry rock, it seems reasonable that the electrical resistivity should increase as microcracks open within the material. Since microcracks open as material is stressed closer and closer to its failure point, it appears that there should be a correlation between electrical resistivity

The House Ways and Means Committee recently heard a bitter dispute over whether gasoline with lead is a worse pollutant than gasoline without lead. The lead industry is also squarely in the middle of this dispute for obvious reasons. Lead used in gasoline amounts to 270,000 tpy, or more than 254 of the annual total mined in the U.S. Few industries can face the loss of such a market without wondering how they are to stay in business. The lead industry picked up unexpected support in this dispute, however, when the AFL-CIO stepped up with outright opposition to the President's proposal to tax lead in gasoline.

A device for rapidly quenching liquid metals into thin platelets has been developed at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. This rapid quenching equipment is built around the technique of catching a molten drop of metal between a rapidly closing plate and a stationary plate. The design and operation of this unit are described. The closing speed of the smasher plate at impact is 12.6 ft per sec. The quenching rate for this device is controlled by the interface resistance between the plates and the platelet, and is dependent upon the heat content and density of the material being quenched. The initial quenching rate down to the freezing point of the platelet material is lo5º to 106ºC per sec. After an isothermal delay, which is poportional to the heat of fusion of the platelet material, the final cooling rate down to the temperature of the smaslier plates is l04ºto 105cº per sec. RAPID heating of metals by capacitor discharge and other methods has provided the metallurgist with a useful tool for probing into the kinetics of phase changes and the many nonequilibrium phenomena which occur during rapid temperature changes. Equally interesting studies can also be made on metals and alloys which are rapidly cooled from the liquid state.' Studies in this field have been limited, however, because the rates at which metals could be cooled were many orders of magnitude slower than the rates possible for heating. In recent years many new laboratory methods have been developed to rapidly cool metals from the liquid state to ambient temperature and below.2"4 All of these methods involve spreading a liquid drop of metal into a thin foil in a very short time. The methods developed have varied from ejecting a drop of molten metal at the inside surface of a rotating cylinder or stationary curved plate to catching a falling drop of molten metal between rapidly closing plates. The equipment which has been developed at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory for rapidly cooling molten materials uses the latter of these two approaches. The basic design, operation, and initial results of this rapid quenching device are given in this report. APPARATUS The drop smasher, which is now being used to obtain rapidly cooled metal foils, is shown in Fig. 1. Basically the device consists of a smasher plate which is driven by a solenoid into a stationary plate. The solenoid is activated by a drop passing through the photoelectric cell and is powered by discharging an adjustable 350-v capacitor bank with a 66-amp peak current into it. This power supply is designed so that the solenoid is powered for 2 m-sec after plate closure to minimize the rebound effect. There is an adjustable time-delay mechanism between the photoelectric cell and the solenoid. Both smasher plates have changeable inserts so that a variety of materials can be used to smash the molten drop. The shaft of the moving plate is guided in an adjustable housing which has ball-bearing walls. The cabinet shown to the left of the drop smasher in Fig. 1 contains the power supply and receiver for the photoelectric cell, the time delay mechanism, and the capacitor bank. The drop smasher can be placed inside a vacuum chamber, for use with radioactive materials, with the upper plate forming the lid, as shown in Fig. 2. On top of the vacuum lid is an induction coil, powered by an Ajax induction generator, which is used to melt drops from the end of the rod extending through the vacuum seal on top the quartz tube. OPERATION The drop smasher shown in Fig. 2 is operated in the following manner. The smasher plates are separated and the unit is lowered into the vacuum chamber using a pressurized cylinder. The induction coil, quartz tube, and lid with sliding vacuum seal are then assembled on top the vacuum chamber. A rod of the material for rapid quenching studies is connected to the rod extending through the sliding vacuum seal. The vacuum chamber is then evacuated and the desired atmosphere established. The photoelectric cell is turned on, and the capacitor bank is charged and armed. Power is supplied to the induction coil, and the rod of material for rapid quenching studies is lowered into the induction field. A molten drop forms on the end of the rod, drops off, falls through the light beam of the photoelectric cell, and is then caught between the smasher plates. .

It is difficult to understand why they did it. It was a demonstration of total commitment which sent chills of mixed admiration and fear up and down your spine. The scene was the bodega in Section A, 2660 Level on the 12 to 8 shift. The jefe was patiently waiting for the tea leaves to settle in a large metal cup. His attention was distracted by the appearance of a miner who had a problem. The long and short of it was that the miner believed the branch raise he was driving was unsafe and he wanted the jefe to come and see it. After lunch the jefe went around. First cautiously shining his light to peer up the raise from outside the chute, he then scrambled inside and swiftly climbed the cribs to the face. No question, it was hairy; about 4 crib sets were needed to catch up to the face. The unsupported raise was slabbing. It didn't take the jefe more than a few seconds to ascertain this situation and to slide back down. As he came out of the chute, a small avalanche arrived on his heels and provided a sort of exclamation point to his order; "cerrado!" In other words, shut 'er down.

A technique previously used to prepare alloys of InAs1-xPx and GaAsl-x Px, miry: the gaseous hydrides arsine and phosphine, has been extended to grow single -crystalline GaAs 1-x Sb x by replacing the phos-phine with stibine. Procedures were developed for handling and storing stibine which now make this chemical useful for vapor phase growth. This represents the first time that this series of alloys has been grown from the vapor phase. Layers of P -type GaSb and GaSb-rich alloys have been grown with the carrier concentrations comparable to the lowest ever reported. In addition, a p-type alloy containing 4 pct GaSb exhibited a mobility of 400 sq cm per v-sec which is equivalent to the highest reported for GaAs. RECENTLY, interest has been shown in the preparation and properties of GaAs1-xSbx alloys, since it was predicted1 that for compositions in the range of 0.1 < x < 0.5, they might provide improved Gunn devices. However, preparation of these alloys presents fundamental difficulties. In the case of liquid phase growth, the large concentration difference between the liquidus and solidus in the phase diagram, at any given temperature, introduces constitutional supercooling problems. It is likely that, for this reason, virtually no description of the preparation of GaAs1-xSbx by this technique has been reported. In the case of vapor phase growth, problems are presented by the low vapor pressure of antimony, and the low melting point of GaSb and many of these alloys. In previous attempts1 at the vapor phase growth of these materials, using antimony pentachloride as the source of antimony vapor, alloy compositions were limited to those containing less than about 2 pct GaSb. This was in part due to the difficulty of avoiding condensation of antimony on introducing it to the growth zone. A growth technique has recently been described2 for the preparation of III-V compounds in which the hydrides of arsenic and phosphorous (AsH3 and pH3) are used as the source of the group V element. With this method, GaAs1-xPx and InAs1-xPx have been prepared2&apos;3 across both alloy series with very good electrical properties. Since the use of stibine (SbH3) affords the potential for effective introduction of antimony to the growth apparatus, in analogy with the other group V hydrides, this growth method has been explored for the preparation of GaAs1-xSbx alloys. In addition to GaSb, these alloys have now been prepared with values of x as high as 0.8. In the case of GaSb, undoped p-type layers were grown with carrier concentrations equivalent to the lowest reported in the literature. Thus it has been demonstrated that, with this growth technique, all of the alloys in this series can be prepared. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Growth Technique. The growth apparatus, shown schematically in Fig. 1, and procedure are virtually identical to that described2 for the growth of GaAs1-xPx alloys, with the exception that phosphine is replaced by stibine.* HCl is introduced over the gallium boat to *Purchased from Matheson Co., E. Rutherford,N+J. transport the gallium predominantly via its subchlo-ride to the reaction zone, where it reacts with arsenic and antimony on the substrate surface to form an alloy layer. The fundamental limiting factors to the growth of GaAs1-xSbx alloys from the vapor phase, especially GaSb-rich alloys, are the low melting point of GaSb (712°C) and the low vapor pressure of antimony at this temperature (<l mm). Thus, relatively low antimony pressures must be employed, which, however, imply low growth rates. To provide low antimony pressures, very dilute concentrations of arsine and stibine in a hydrogen carrier gas were used. Typical flow rates (referred to stp) were about 4 cm3 per min of HC1 (0.06 mole pct)+ from 0.1 to 1 cm3 per min of ASH, (0.002 to 0.02 mole pct), and from 1 to 10 cn13 per min of SbH3 (0.02 to 0.2 mole pct), with a total hydrogen carrier gas flow rate of about 6000 cm3 per min. Although no precise data on decomposition. kinetics exist, it is known4 that stibine decomposes extremely rapidly at elevated temperatures. However, the high linear velocities attendent with the high total flow rate (about 2000 cm per sec) delays cracking of the stibine until it reaches the reaction zone and prevents condensation of antimony in the system. Solid-state electrochemical measurements by three alternative experimental procedures were made with the cell FeO, Fe3O4 |Zro.85Cao.15O1.85 |Cu| Zr0.85CaO.15O1.85 | FeO, Fe304 to establish the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper in the temperature range 800" to 1030°C. The solubility of oxygen in solid copper and the diflusivity of oxygen in solid copper Dgu = 1.7 X 10-2 exp(-16,000/RT) Cm2/sec were determined and confirmed in alternative experiments. The enthalpy of solution of oxygen in solid copper equals —10,000 cal per mole; the partial excess entropy of the oxygen atoms in the Cu-O dilute solution is approximately the same as that found for interstitial atoms in other metals. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper is consistent with that expected for an interstitial atom. RELIABLE values for the saturation solubility N(s) and diffusivity DO of oxygen in solid copper have not been unambiguously established in the literature. Following three early determinations by others,1"3 Rhines and Mathewson4 reported that the solubility of oxygen in solid copper increased from 0.007 at. pct 0 at 600°C to about 0.015 pct at 1050°C. Phillips and skinner,, using essentiially the same analytical procedure, reported that the solid solubility increases from 0.0018 at. pct 0 at 550°C to about 0.0075 pct at 1050OC. The only previous value for the diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper was reported by Ransley.6 Ransley deoxidized Cu-Cu2O alloys in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide gas to yield a solubility-diffusivity product. He used the solubility data of Rhines and Mathewson to calculate the diffusivity values. Another method for obtaining the solubility-diffusivity product (N(s) DO) is by measuring the widths of internal-oxidation zones in copper alloys as reported by Verfurth and Rapp.7 However, the calculated N(S)Do products depend upon the alloy content of the specimen, so that the internal oxidation of copper alloys does not follow ideal internal oxidation kinetics. As a result, unequivocal values for the N(s) DO product were not obtained by this procedure. A solid-state coulometric titration technique similar to that employed in this work was introduced by C. Wagner8 to study the dependence on silver activity of the Ag/S ratio in silver sulfide in the temperature range of 160" to 300°C. Similar experiments have been carried out by C. Wagner and co-workers9-11 to study the stoichiometry range of silver and copper tellurides, cuprous sulfide, and cuprous selenide. Numerous authors have carried out electrochemical measurements with a solid oxygen-ion-conducting electrolyte to determine the solubility and/or diffusivity of dissolved oxygen in several liquid metals.12-l6 Rickert and Steiner17,18 have used solid-state electrochemical measurements to determine the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver from 760" to 900°C. Two different cell geometries were used. In the cell of linear geometry Fe, FeO | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [1] oxygen diffused from the interior of the silver electrode to the silver/electrolyte interface where the oxygen activity had been lowered from a fixed initial value to practically zero by the application of voltage to the cell. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver was determined from the solution of the diffusion equation and the time dependence of the cell current. However, this determination of the diffusion coefficient depended upon a knowledge of the solubility of oxygen in solid silver. A cylindrical geometry was used for the cell Pt, O2(Po2 = 0.21 atm) | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [II] which also allowed the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver to be determined. These values were in agreement with other available data.l9 Recently, Raleigh20,21 used a method involving the measurement of diffusion-limited currents in a cell involving the AgBr solid electrolyte to determine the diffusion coefficient of silver in Ag-Au alloys at 400°C. Diffusivity values on the order of l0-14 sq cm per sec were measured in the alloy composition range 10 to 60 at. pct Ag in a single experiment. From numerous electrical conductivity and galvanic cell measurements,9&apos;22"26 the solid solution Zr0.85 Ca0.15 O1.85 has been established as an electrolyte with predominant oxygen ion conduction over a wide range of intermediate and high oxygen activities. For interrelating the thermodynamics and the kinetics of the dissolution of oxygen in solid copper in this investigation, a galvanic cell was constructed with FeO-Fe3O4 as the reversible reference electrode, the Zr0.85Ca0.15 O1.85 electrolyte, and a pure copper specimen under-saturated in oxygen as the other electrode. A graphic method has been devised for three-di-mensional analysis of hot deformation and for correlating the amount and directionality of the deformation with resulting directional properties. Deformation is evaluated in terms of dimensional change ratios referred to three orthogonal axes. Since all combinations of the three ratios can be represented in a triangular coordinate field with logarithmic scales, a two-dimensional chart of extent of deformation and degree of asymetry is possible. The entire gamut of shape changes from upsetting through flat-rolling to rod-rolling is accommodated. The resulting coordinate system is a base upon which can be represented the properties of the wrought products measured in the directions of the axes employed fir evaluating the deformation. When property data are available for many types and amounts of deformation, a three-dimensional figure can be constructed, and the projection of this figure is referred to as a &apos;&apos;3d&apos;&apos; chart. Experience in using such charts to plan fabricating operations for a variety of thick-section forged and rolled products of heat-treated aluminum alloys has verified its practical value for optimizing directionality relationships. MechANICAL anisotropy of thick section products of heat-treatable aluminum alloys is recognized by producers and users of these products, and the extent of the directional differences is apparent in property tabulations included in handbooks, standards, and specifications.&apos; Attention has also been directed to the existence of important directional differences in the resistance of these products to stress-corrosion cracking. Metallurgical structure factors responsible for these directional differences include, among other possibilities, shape and alignment of grains, voids and nonmetallic inclusions (when present), volume fraction and spatial distribution of secondary phase particles and solid-state precipitates, crystal-lographic textures, and Bauschinger effect. The contributions of the individual factors vary with alloy composition, heat-treated temper, type of working process (forging, rolling, extrusion), and the amount and directional nature of the deformation. In general, the cast ingot used as the starting material for producing these wrought products exhibits only a modest degree of directionality. A monotonic and continuous transition from this nearly isotropic state with progressive hot deformation would appear probable, assuming that the working temperature is sufficiently high to cause continuous dynamic recovery. Several years ago a project was undertaken to evaluate the effects of hot deformation and metallurgical structures on the directionality of thick wrought aluminum alloy products, and the method to be described was developed as an analytical tool in this investigation. DIRECTION NOMENCLATURE The nomenclature system adopted by industry for the three mutually perpendicular directions employed in testing aluminum alloy products includes four terms: "longitudinal", "transverse", "long transverse", and "short transverse". These terms are conventionally related to the external geometry of the product but also by implication to the deformation and resulting metallurgical structure. Occasions arise in which through use of unusual fabricating methods, intentional or otherwise, the structure does not have the usual relationship to external geometry or may be very complex because of inhomogeneity of deformation throughout the piece. The longitudinal direction is generally parallel to the primary rolling direction or to the direction of extrusion. In the case of forging, it is parallel to the direction of maximum extension (not maximum "working" or "flow", as frequently stated). The term transverse is applied to any direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction in a product having symmetry about the longitudinal axis, and generally, although not always, the deformation to produce these forms is nearly symmetrical in the transverse plane. This term then may be applied to a round, square, hexagon, or other polygonal, symmetrical shape produced by extrusion or rolling or by forging, if produced by a simple, symmetrical drawing procedure. Chemical processing of ores has gained new im¬petus in recent years. The reasons are many. They range from the need to process ores that are difficult to beneficiate to the avoidance of pollution. Although many think of chemical processing as a hydrometallurgical operation there are other techniques. An example is chlorination. Chlorination, although examined and discarded by many investigators, is again being considered as a means of extracting uranium1, treatment of silver-lead ores2, and the recovery of base metals from pyrite cinder and ores3. Segregation roasting of copper and nickel ores, a process similar to chlorination, is another chemical treatment being revived.

Electroplating is a widely utilized but little understood process. The fact that the average person is in contact with dozens of plated items daily without even being aware that they are electroplated is evidence of the success of the process. Although a complete explanation of electrodeposition involves thermodynamics and modern theories of bonding and catalytic reactions, in its simplest form the process conforms to the following description. A metal salt dissolved in water partially dissociates into negatively charged and positively charged ions. In the case of nickel sulfate dissolved in water, for example, a portion of the salt dissociates into positively charged nickel ions and negatively charged sulfate ions. If an electrical potential is applied between two electrodes in this solution, the nickel ions migrate toward the cathode and the sulfate ions toward the anode. The negatively charged cathode has a high concentration of electrons, which combine with the positively charged metal ions to form neutral metal atoms with a stable electron configuration. These insoluble atoms thus form a deposit on the cathode.

A transmission electron microscope study was made of magnesium single crystals deformed in torsion using the basal pole as the forsional axis. While this type of deformation is predicted to result in the formation of hexagonal networks of screw dislocations, these networks were not observed. The basic dislocation arrangement consisted of arrays of nearly parallel and approximately equally spaced dislocations. The average dislocation density was over an order of magnitude higher than that required to account for the torsional deformation. The observed high rate of work hardening in these crystals is consistent with both their high dislocation densities and the arrangement of dislocations in pile-ups. The experimental observations are also in agreement with the assumption that dislocation sources are activated not only at the surface but at interior locations as well. In considering torsional deformation, Amelinckx and Dekeyser1 postulated that when a torque is applied to a crystal oriented with a glide plane normal to the specimen axis, deformation occurs by the following steps: 1) Nucleation of dislocation sources at or near the specimen surface in areas where the shear stress, resolved along a slip Burgers vector, is a maximum; 2) the screw orientations of the dislocations accommodating the twist move inwards towards the specimen center. If two glide directions lie on the glide plane, the geometry shown in Fig. 1 should result; 3) the screw dislocations that pile up in the central part of the specimen cross-slip to form a grid. At the same time, screws of opposite sign and most edges leave the specimen. Tinder,2 using zinc crystals twisted about the basal pole, independently reached essentially the same conclusions. He suggested a mechanism involving nucleation of ?(1120) screw dislocations at the six points of highest resolved shear stress that lie on the cross-section near the surface. Under the applied shear stress these dislocations were assumed to move inward and interact so as to form a hexagonal network of screw dislocations. Today it is often accepted that rotational slip occurs by a mechanism of the above type, but to our understanding this has never been experimentally proved. This paper reports an experimental study of rotational slip, using magnesium single crystals, that indicates that in this metal rotational slip does not conform well to this mechanism. "The Geological Survey of Canada is devoting consider-able effort to finding ways to make airborne radiometric measurements both quantitative and reproducible. Equipment has been designed by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. to provide high count rates in order to minimize statistical uncertainty, this being essential to justify applying terrain clearance and Compton scattering corrections to the data. Correction factors have been determined experimentally and can be applied automatically. Considerable ground work has been undertaken in parallel with equip-ment development in order to determine field parameters.Two airborne gamma-ray spectrometers are described. One is based on three 5-by 5-inch Nal(Tl) detector crystals and is used in a helicopter; the other employs twelve 9-by 9-inch detectors and is used from a Skyvan aircraft. The former is being used to investigate the range of radiometric response from specific rock types, and for the correlation of ground and air measurements; the latter has completed initial trials and will be commencing experimental surveys during 1969.Results are given to show the comparative sensitivities of the various detector sizes, and operational requirements for a gamma-ray spectrometer survey are discussed briefly."

One Sunday night last month the phone rang and it was George Schenck from Penn State. How would we like to see a big scrap operation, he wanted to know. A few days later we were on the Connecticut turnpike headed for New Haven to visit a large scrap operation, M. Schiavone and Sons. George had a large clam basket in the back which he explained was for collecting trophies. The car shredder, he said, turns out some fancy metal shapes. In fact, they have gained a certain acceptance as objets d’art among George&apos;s friends and relatives. He thinks there may be a small, but possibly lucrative secondary market for shredded cars in the art world if the idea is imaginatively promoted. On the way to New Haven we received a briefing on the scrap industry. The scrap business grew from humble beginnings. Mostly it was started by a few immigrant Jews who collected junk in hand- or horse-drawn carts. The fortunate one might even have had a truck. Before proceeding further, we hasten to point out that the word "junk" is strictly taboo among scrap people, who prefer to refer to their industry as the "secondary metals industry."

edicted increase in, Aluminium production and the possibility of a diminishing supply of petroleum coke for anode electrodes in alumina reduction cells makes it desirable to find alternative electrode materials. Brown coal char, with a lower ash content and with an elemental purity similar to petroleum coke, has been produced by leaching in hydrochloric acid, washing with water and charring at 115000. The cost of processing is estimated to be competitive with petroleum coke. Without further processing the bulk density and real density were undesirably low, but. by briquetting the coal before charring and crushing, the bulk density was improved to 92 per cent of the petroleum coke value and the Particle density was improved to 92 per cent of the density of petroleum coke by water-displacement or 75 per cent by mercury displacement. Pre-baked electrodes were prepared from the char alone, mixtures of petroleum coke and char and from petroleum coke alone, all bonded with coal tar pitch. The electrodes were tested for the usual physical properties and were, evaluated for performance in a laboratory size alumina reduction cell. Electrodes based on brown coal char alone were found to be inferior in physical properties, and performance, but mixtures of the char and petroleum coke, despite poorer density, electrical resistivity and carbon consumption on a theoretical basis, in performance tests gave up to 17 per cent better carbon consumption per weight of aluminium produced and 21 percent better electrical current efficiency than the electrodes based on petroleum coke alone. It is suggested that larger scale tests are warranted.

The effects of the temperature of deformation and the degvee of deformation on the annealing spectrum of a Au-Ag alloy have been determined by vesistance measurements. Specimens were deformed in torsion at 4°, 78K and room temperature up to strains nd/l of about 1.0 and were isochronally annealed. Discrete annealing stages similar to those found for pure metals were observed. Stage A occurred below room temperature; the decrease in reszstance associated with this stage increased as the temperature of deformation was lowered or the strain was increased. Stage B manifested itself as an increase in resistance; this is attributed to the restoration of short-range order promoted by vacancy or vacancy aggregate migration. At temperatures above 48S0K, recrystallization or Stage C occurred. Stages A, B, and C in the annealzng curves of this alloy may be considered to correspond to Stages II, Ill, and V, respectively, in the terminology used to describe the annealing spectrum of pure metals. ThE annealing behavior after deformation below room temperature has been thoroughly investigated on pure metals, in particular gold and copper. The occurrence of several discrete stages in the annealing spectrum of these metals has been established, but the interpretation of some of these stages in terms of specific mechanisms is still controversial.&apos; The annealing of alloys deformed below room temperature has been the subject of only a few investigations. In the investigation reported here, a Au-Ag alloy was annealed after deformation at and below room temperature. This continues a research program on the deformation and annealing behavior of Au-Ag alloys.2-8s EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An alloy rod of composition 82.6 wt pct Au-17.4 pct Ag was reduced to wire, 0.0428 in. diam, by swaging and drawing. After a recrystallization treatment, the grain size was 0.031 mm, as obtained from the average linear intercept.7 The ends of wires about 6 in. long were flattened and sealed into short brass tubes with cold setting cement to form the grips of the torsion specimens. The equipment used for deformation has been described elsewhere.6 The specimens were deformed at room temperature, 78", and 4°K to various strains nd/l, where n is the number of turns, d the diameter of the specimen, and 1 its length between grips. The strain rate ?max was 0.1 min-&apos; at the sur- face of the specimen except where noted otherwise. The specimens were annealed isochronally for 30 min at intervals of approximately 30°K from the temperature of deformation to approximately 800°K, except that after deformation at 4°K the lowest annealing temperature was 78°K. A potentiometric method was used to measure the resistance: all measurements were made at 78°K with the exception of some measurements at 4°K mentioned below. Data obtained with a single specimen yielded a complete annealing curve: in several cases duplicate specimens were used to confirm the reproducibility of the curves. Since the surfaces of the specimens were rough after deformation, their diameters could not be measured accurately. The resistance increments after deformation and annealing are therefore reported as percentages of the resistance of the same specimen measured after completion of the annealing, that is, after full recrystallization. The corresponding resistivity values can be calculated by obtaining the effective diameter of a deformed specimen from the ratio of its resistance after recrystallization to the true resistivity, which was determined with a smooth specimen of known dimensions. This method of calculation was used to obtain data shown in several of the figures. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The isochronal annealing curves after deformation to various strains at 4", 78K, and room temperature are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The resistance increment of the as-deformed specimens as a function of strain is shown in Fig. 4. "In response to needs created by intensive exploration and accelerating expansion of coal mining in the Western provinces, Canadian R & D on coal is progressively widening its scope. Principal interests continue to lie in coal geology, preparation and processing, carbonization, combustion and transportation, but much active work is also in progress with respect to mine environments, mined-land reclamation, and environmental consequences of coal mining, processing and use. Long-range 'basic' research, which characterized much of the R & D pattern in the fifties and early sixties and which was often no more than an attempt to prevent total extinction of a dying industry, has been somewhat de-emphasized, except insofar as it relates to 'safe' coal storage and to coal-based carbons (which are beginning to command attention as pollution control media).In this review, recent exploration, mine development and new preparation facilities are noted, and current R & D in transportation, processing, handling, carbonization and combustion is summarized. Reference is also made to investigations bearing on non-fuel uses of coal (notably as source-materials for carbons and agrobiological products)."

Specimens of a hydrided Mg-0.5 Zr alloy were strained in tension at 500°C and constant rates of 2 x10-3 5 x 10-3, and 2 X 10" min-1. Hydride-denuded zones formed at grain boundaries normal to the tensile-stress direction as a result of magnesium transport during difusional flow. The width of the zones could be measured and the measurement used for calculating the diffusional component of the imposed tensile strain. The strain from diffusional flow was found to increase with imposed strain at a diminishing rate, tending to saturate at approximately 12 pct. Strain rate sensitivity of flow stress was low. The apparent non Newtonian character of the diffusional flow is attributed to a non Newtonian process acting in parallel with it which could be boundary shear. Fracture grows out of voids that form in the denuded zones. DEFORMATION of a grain by diffusion of atoms from boundaries stressed in compression to boundaries stressed in tension is Newtonian viscous,1-3 and evidence has accumulated in recent years that such a process may be responsible for the high strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress of super-plastic alloys.4"7 One piece of evidence is that experimental stress: strain-rate relationships can be quantitatively explained.5-7 There is also metallo-graphic evidence of diffusional flow in superplas-ticity, but in a limited amount. The formation of striated bands on the surface of superplastically deformed specimens has been attributed to diffusional flow.5"7 The basis of that attribution came from experiments on a coarse-grained, nonsuperplastic and hydrided Mg-½ wt pct Zr alloy which formed hydride-denuded, light etching zones at tension-stressed boundaries when strained in tension at 270?C.6 The origin of these zones had already been traced to the diffusional flow of magnesium atoms to the boundaries.&apos; The particular observations in the more recent work were of striated-band formation on the surface and denuded-zone formation internally, with both the bands and zones having the same width and appearing at tension-stressed boundaries. It was argued that the bands were a surface manifestation of the zones and hence of diffusional flow. Of course in superplastic alloys which do not contain internal metallographic "markers", the surface bands can be the only metallographic indication. In the present work, denuded-zone formation was utilized, as it has been by others,9-11 to extend the observations of diffusional flow and to measure the strain, ed, resulting from it. Grain size had to be large to measure ed with accuracy. The grain size chosen for this study was -30 , and with that a strain of 10 pct from diffusional flow produces a denuded zone only 3 µ in width. The large grain size naturally precludes superplasticity. The observations of diffusional flow were complemented by determining the strain from the other operative deformation modes: slip, e,, and grain boundary shear, egb. An incremental specimen extension is the sum of increments from slip, and grain boundary shear as well as diffusional flow. Division by a common length is required to convert to strain. If this length is taken as the initial specimen length, then imposed engineering strain, e, is given in terms of the component engineering strains by e = ed + es + egb [1] Stress:strain-rate relationships are determined by the way in which this "strain balance" is made up. EXPERIMENTAL Material. Zirconium hydride markers were introduced into the Mg-0.5Zr alloy by annealing in hydrogen at 450°C for 30 min. The hydride concentration was particularly high at zirconium rich stringers, which was fortunate in that the transverse boundaries at which denuded zones form lie perpendicular to the stringers. Grain size after annealing was 30 µ. Photomicrographs of unstrained and strained material are shown in Fig. 1. Procedure. Specimens were strained in tension with an Instron machine at crosshead velocities of either 2 x 10"3, 5 x X or 1 x 10-2 in. min-&apos;. Specimen length and diameter were 1.0 and 0.2 in., respectively, so that initial strain rates in tests at constant crosshead speed were 2 x 10"3, 5 x X and 1 X l0-2 min-1. Tests were made at 500°C which is a compromise temperature at which diffusional flow is still measurable but grain growth is not active enough to interfere with metallographic measurements. The tests were made in a hydrogen atmosphere. Strain Balance. An equation additional to [I] is eg = ed + es [2] where eg is strain measured from grain elongation. Measurement was made of ed, eg, and, of course, e, which enabled all the strains in Eq. [I] to be determined. For this purpose, strained specimens were sectioned longitudinally, polished, and etched. The strain from diffusional flow, ed, was computed by measuring on photomicrographs the width in the tensile direction of denuded zones at either end of a grain XI, X2, adding them, and dividing by twice the initial longitudinal grain dimension L0, Fig. 2. Reported values are the results of measurements on seventy randomly selected grains; 95 pct confidence limits on ed were +1.5 pct strain. In this paper, the author derives a series of formulas from basic principles and illustrates the application of these formulas to practical grinding charge problems. The paper establishes the nearly proportional relationship of mill power to charge level and shows how this relationship can be used to advantage in the design, manufacture and operation of grinding mills. The procedures outlined offer a rapid means of anticipating the power requirements for a given charge or determining makeup charges for a given power reading. The theories which have been developed concerning the dynamics of grinding have been motivated largely by the desire to derive workable formulas for the accurate determination of grinding mill power. This accurate determination has always been handicapped by the large number of variables to be considered, some of which are mill diameter, length, speed, liner design, grinding charge and material density, volumetric mill loading, internal friction, and charge size and gradation. In efforts to determine mill power, attempts have been made to utilize torque concepts. The formulas derived consider the grinding mass as a rigid body and utilize factors that are based on empirical data so that the movement of the charge within the mill is compensated for. These formulas are of principal interest to the mill designer since he is charged with the responsibility of analyzing all of the variables and from them predicting a mill size and a motor size which are compatible both with each other and with the grinding job for which they were intended. The mill operator, on the other hand, has an entirely different problem. The mill dimensions are already established and so is the driving motor. The operator&apos;s main concern is to obtain maximum performance from the mill he already has. For him, the many variables which perplex the mill designer are fixed values. Mill diameter, length and speed are set and, to a large extent, so are the conditions inside the mill from which the torque formula advocates derive their empirical data. It is conceivable that if the major mill dimensions which affect power demand are held constant, and if the variables influencing empirical factors are held fairly constant, as they are in an operating mill, then the only major variable remaining which affects power is the level of the charge itself.
