Western mines have had limited choices for standing support. Wood cribs were often too soft and unstable. The introduction of the Can support in the early 1990’s provided a very effective alternative and remains the dominant form of tailgate support. Water-filled prestressing cells are now used to cap the Can and preload it to provide an active roof load. The Cluster Prop, consisting of three timber wedge props bundled together, provides more capacity than an equivalent sized Can support and improves transport efficiency. However, the Cluster Prop is less stable and does not maintain a consistent load throughout its loading profile. Pumpable roof supports are another alternative support, but they have not been proven in high deformation environments. Alternative supports are also being used in longwall recovery operations. These include the Rocprop and Omni Prop, which are extendable support systems. They also provide active roof loading which can be beneficial in these applications. Specialty supports, such as the Sand Prop and Spider Prop, have also been introduced into western longwall operations. This paper compares the performance characteristics of these various support systems.

In the past decades, a technological explosion has caused generational shifts. First, millennials experienced a technological shift to computers and cellphones. Next, Generation Z experienced a shift to smart phones and social media. These two generations are immersed in technology and are accustomed to constant connectivity. How do the extractive and construction industries gain the interest of younger generations and integrate them into the industry? The Virginia Tech Student Chapter of the International Society of Explosives Engineers handled this same issue with its recruitment efforts and event planning from 2017-2019. The first critical component of integrating Generation Z college students into the extractive industries is clear and frequent communication via email. Next, Generation Z often values the motivation behind work when choosing a career, so advertising technological advancements, benefits, and ways people can contribute to improving the industry also helps attract young generations. Similarly, advertising opportunities for people to work outside with their hands, travel, and secure stable careers can attract students. At Virginia Tech, the most effective way to attract and maintain the interest of students in extractive industries is to put the students in the field. Field trips to mines and factories experienced the most stable attendance and highest survey reviews of all other chapter events. Guest presentations from industry professionals were often well attended, but attendance tapered off as the academic year progressed and students grew busier. Periodic trips throughout the year maintained student engagement and often supplemented their curriculum. The student chapter was relatively successful in attracting students, but it struggled to maintain attendance levels in the latter portion of the academic year. In the future, the industry can increase its recruitment of Generation Z and Millennials into the workforce by working more closely with university programs to provide resources and opportunities for hands-on experiences for students.

This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract No. H0178069. The purpose of this project was to enhance the Bureau of Mine's Cableless Electronic Survey System use to aid in the drilling of long (approx. 2000 feet) boreholes in coal. This drilling is performed as part of the methane drainage program. The system that was ultimately developed was field tested and demonstrated in actual in-mine drilling activities. The significance of this system as compared to previous drill survey systems is the fact that it surveys without having to be inserted and removed for each survey point. It is so designed that it can withstand the shock and vibration experience by the drill string during drilling. This means an increased productivity is now possible in that drill operators can determine drill bit positioning in a near real-time environment.

The Construction of Tunnel and Edison Force Mains contract involves the installation of two new force mains to provide a redundant means for sewage conveyance from Middlesex County Utility Authority?s (MCUA) Edison Pump Station on the northern shore of the Raritan River to the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant on the southern shore. The force mains will be installed in a 1,192 m (3,910 lineal foot) long tunnel with a 4.09 m (13'-5') inside diameter, fully gasketed precast concrete segmental lining, which is to be tunneled underneath the Raritan River utilizing an Earth Pressure Balance TBM. The tunnel is anticipated to encounter flowing soils near and beneath the river. Two new 60-inch diameter Centrifugal Cast Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar force mains will be installed within the tunnel leaving an open utility corridor above the force mains for future consideration. The project also includes the design and construction of two slurry wall shafts with associated piping. The paper will provide an overview of design and provide a case history of the construction of the tunnel and highlights of the construction methods implemented to date.

It is often desirable to obtain one or more accurate horizontal sections of a blast furnace after blowing out. Wishing to do this, last April, in the case of No. 4 furnace at Glendon, which had worn in a very remarkable manner, the method described below was employed, with very good results. A scaffold was fixed in the furnace, and on it was placed a drawingboard, covered with paper, the top of which was made level at exactly the height at which the section was to he taken. (Fig. 8.) The centre of the furnace (which had previously been found, and marked on a plank across the top) was laid off on it by dropping a plumb-bob from above, and a strong needle was driven into the board in the centre. By means of a straight-edge and two plumbbobs, the line passing through the centres of the front and back arches was also drawn on the board. Many different types of structures and materials have been used to build mineral processing facilities throughout the years. Although structure type and building material were not viewed as significant factors affecting the health of employees in these facilities when they were built, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has found that building type can impact respirable dust and noise levels. NIOSH performed a study in which it evaluated three building types: masonry, an open-structure design, and a steel-sided design. This study indicated that an open-structure design (no walls) was superior from both a dust and noise (health) standpoint when compared to the other two structure types. Therefore, companies may want to consider this design when building new structures.

The effects of phase behavior on reservoir economics is a function of both fluid composition and flow properties of the reservoir rock. In some operations such as gas injection into volatile crude-oil resertoirs, the stock-tank recovery derived from vaporization of the reservoir oil by the displacing gas can approach the recovery derived from the displacement mechanism. In other cases of gas-cycling reservoirs, the dry injected gas can effectively vaporize a retrograde liquid phase, allowing a substantial reduction in cycling pressure with no appreciable loss in recoverable liquids. Because of these effects, it is essential that phase behavior be considered in developing the economics of any secondary recovery program in which gas is the injected fluid. The inclusion of phase behavior in conventional calculation procedures has been retarded because of the complexity of the calculation and the large volume of laboratory data required. However, by applying high-speed computers and new laboratory techniques, the phase-behavior displacement calculation has been developed to economically include this basic fundamental of gas displacement. The calculation is performed by reducing the reservoir to a series of one-dimensional segments. Phase changes, saturation distributions and changing fluid properties are evaluated for each segment as a function of time. The relative volumes of equilibrium liquid and gas displaced from each segment are determined by a trial-and-error procedure to meet the requirements of phase equilibrium and two-phase flow. The produced fluids are flashed through conditions of surface separation approximating those in the field to obtain actual values for stock-tank liquid recovery and producing gas-oil ratios. Based on the results of successful field studies, the technique appears to have application to reservoirs producing under a nonmiscible gas-displacement mechanism and should substantially increase the reliability of this type of analysis when phase behavior is an important factor. Predicting reservoir performance under gas-injection operations involves three basic principles of reservoir engineering. First, a material balance exists between the displacing gas and the displaced reservoir fluid. Second, the oil and gas flow in relationship with the two-phase flow property of the reservoir rock; and third, phase equilibrium exists between the displacing gas and the native reservoir fluid. To illustrate these three principles, consider the one-dimensional reservoir shown in Fig. 1. The reservoir is divided into a series of segments representing a one-dimensional cross section between an injection area and a producing area. So represents the oil saturation, Cw represents the connate-water saturation and Sg represents the displacing gas saturation. The gas is moving into Segment 1 and the reservoir oil is being produced out of Segment N. Consider the case when gas has just moved into Segment 1 and the displacing gas-oil contact is at position a-a The volume of oil pushed out of Segment 1 is a function only of mobility and the two-phase flow properties of the reservoir rock, that is, Kg/Ko and µo/µg. Behind the front if the injected gas is foreign to the reservoir oil (a nonequilibrium gas), there will either be vaporization of the oil into the gas or condensation of the gas into the oil. In either case the net result is a mass transfer and a re-distribution of composition and liquid and gas saturation. If the displacement is at constant pressure and is continued, the gas moves into new segments, proceeding succesively into Segment 2, 3, etc. The total volume of oil produced from the reservoir

An underground investigation was designed and implemented by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to evaluate the effectiveness of pre-driven longwall recovery rooms supported with pumpable concrete roof supports. The pumpable roof supports were instrumented with hydraulic pressure cells to measure support loading. Displacement of the support was also measured to assess the support reaction to ground movements. Movement up to 12.5 m (40 ft) into the roof was measured with sonic probes and multipoint extensometers. Borehole pressure cells were installed in the panel fender and outby pillars to evaluate load transfer. Shield loading was also assessed to determine the impact of the panel fender yielding on face loading. The results show that the yielding of the panel fender produced uncontrollable convergence that caused yielding of the shields and stiff pumpable roof supports when the face was approximately 3.12 m (10 ft) from the recovery room. The shields continued to yield until the face advanced into the recovery room. Convergence in the pre-driven recovery room typically reached 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) once the pumpable supports yielded and shed load through a declining residual load capacity prior to being cut out by the longwall shearer. Roof deformations occurred beyond the 10 m (32 ft) horizon with total deformation ranging from five to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches), indicating that standing support was necessary to help control the span as the longwall face advanced into the pre-driven recovery room. Stability improved as the pumpable supports were cut out, thereby reducing the span between the shields and the outby pillars. In the end, the shields were successfully recovered under stable ground conditions. However, a disconcerting discovery was the load shedding of the outby pillars as the recovery room was mined into. This behavior was not expected with a relatively narrow room that is fully supported with standing support. If this mechanism is indeed occurring, the width of the room and performance of the standing support becomes even more critical. Premature failure of the support can lead to excessive convergence on the shield line that cannot be controlled even with modern shields, resulting in instabilities that can lead to catastrophic results. Understanding the load transfer mechanics associated with the advancement of the longwall face into the pre-driven recovery room and the widening of the room to recover the longwall shields is providing valuable information for the refinement of the NIOSH Ground Reaction Curve for standing and intrinsic roof support system design.

A test system was developed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's ventilation test gallery for measuring airflow using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer. The gallery war used to simulate face airflow conditions in underground mines having a blowing curtain. Airflow data, collected at multiple sampling locations between the face and the end of the curtain, were used to draw airflow profiles for different curtain setback distances, intake flow quantities and entry widths. In addition, methane was released at the face, measured at the sampling locations and displayed as methane distributions in the area between the curtain and the face. Entry geometry had a significant effect on airflow patterns, and the flow patterns affected the distribution of methane in the entry. Flow measured at and parallel to the face was a good predictor of methane dilution and removal within 0.6 m (2ft) of the face.

Growth characteristics of Co-rich crusts from the Western Pacific have been approached. The thick crust shows 3 structural layers: compact upper layer, porous middle layer, and compact lower layer. The middle and lower layers have obviously different microscopic structure, color, and luster. Preliminary study of Calcareous nanofossils in one crust shows that the crust began to grow since Paleogene. The porous middle layer was formed from late Miocene to late Pliocene (Ca. 0.5 ~ 11.9Ma) and the compact lower layer was formed from late Paleocene to late Oligocene (Ca. 56.3 ~ 23.2Ma). The sedimentary hiatus of a 14.26Ma was observed between the middle and lower layers. The boundary between them to be Oligocene/Miocene (O/M) shows an important message on growth age.

Longwall shields provide essential ground control in longwall mining, yet a high percentage of shields are operating at less than peak capacity and many at well below the rated support capacity due to defective hydraulic cylinders or malfunctions in other hydraulic components. Leg pressure data are currently collected on state-of-the-art longwall shields, but typically are not analyzed to evaluate shield performance. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Shield Hydraulics Inspection and Evaluation of Leg Data (SHIELD) program is a Visual Basic software system that is designed to analyze leg pressure data and identify shields that are not performing to rated specifications. The program analysis is configured to detect the following conditions: (1) loss of leg pressure, (2) imbalance in leg pressure, (3) low set pressure, (4) low yield pressure, and (5) full extension of the bottom stage. Other performance assessment measures include the percentage of the support capacity utilized (ratio of peak load to yield load), the percent of time that a shield operates at yield load, the ratio of the set load to the yield load, and the amount of support capacity that is lost due to leaking cylinders. Historical record keeping will allow the user to select a particular shield and review the performance record as developed by the program for that shield. In addition to these performance assessment measures, the software will include an animated description of shield hydraulic systems that will describe the operation and significance of each hydraulic component and the impact of component failures on the shield’s capability to provide the required roof support. A general overview of the SHIELD program is provided in the paper together with an example analysis of a 2.5-year-old Australian longwall face.

Pyrometallurgy is an important sector of modern industrial society actively participating in solving current environmental, economic, materials scarcity and other challenges. Recent advances in analytical methods, experimental techniques, thermodynamic, phase equilibria and process modelling tools provide new opportunities to increase the productivity of pyrometallurgical reactors, the treatment of complex feeds and metal recoveries. Fundamental theoretical models can now be used to make a significant next step towards the development and implementation of computerised models describing real industrial processes—Virtual Reactors, and computer-aided smart-decision-making systems that may be called Pyro-GPS by analogy to GPS; these developments can facilitate knowledge-based improvement and optimisation strategies. The implementation of these improvements require ongoing collaboration between researchers, industry and government.

It is a well-known fact to all Bessemer steel manufacturers using a blooming mill, that ingots show large cracks in the first few passes of the rolls, which, in the following ones, do not always roll up satisfactorily. This deficiency in the quality of the product is generally called "red-shortness," though, in the writer's opinion, mostly unjustly so. Different explanations for the said peculiarity are given by the leading authorities, each works selecting one element as a special scapegoat for the inferior quality of the ingot. The sulphur is generally first charged as being the principal cause of all mischief in this direction ; then, after ascertaining that sulphur is not higher than the average, and sometimes lower in the very worst heats, silicon has to bear its share of abuse. How and why silicon should affect the working qualities of the metal, the writer could never precisely learn, but is convinced that the doctrine of its pernicious influence is an established one with many. In cases where silicon failed to explain everything, resort was taken to calcium, aluminum, and some other known or unknown elements, without settling the difficulty; and lastly, when the skill of the chemist became exhausted, " practical men " came to the same conclusion, which many leading blast-furnace managers had arrived

IN the Journal of the Franklin Institute for May, 1870, there is published a description of a Colorimeter, together with a modification of the method proposed by Professor Eggertz, for determining combined carbon in iron and steel. An instrument of the kind there described, but of a little higher range, though in other respects not differing materially from the one originally made and used in the Iron-Masters7 Laboratory, I now submit to your inspection ; and I propose, also, to make some determinations minations with it for the purpose of showing how quickly they may be made, and enabling you to form some judgment of what reliance can be placed in the results. Professor Eggertz proposed only a single standard, and the solution to be tested should be diluted to exactly correspond in color with that of the standard, and the per cent. of carbon calculated after carefully noting and making allowance for the measures of water used in diluting. In practice, difficulty was found in bringing the color of the normal solution down to the exact shade of the standard; also other difficulties were met with in conducting the process, causing delay and interfering with the accuracy of the results. To materially overcome these, and after numerous attempts, an instrument such as is now before you suggested itself to me; and also I concluded to use a larger quantity of metal than directed by Eggertz, and, in addition, to filter the solution from its insoluble matter before making the comparison; and, more recently, to use an acid of just such strength as would completely dissolve the metal without the application of heat. Experimenting with these changes from the original method I obtained reasonably good results. King County?s (KC) Brightwater Conveyance Project in Seattle, Washington involves the construction of approximately 21 kilometers (13 miles) of bored tunnel, in three contracts, with four TBM?s which produce large amounts of real-time digital mining data. To facilitate the management of TBM data with a single interface and assist in project Quality Assurance, KC?s Construction Manager (Jacobs Engineering) recommended the use of the software TPC (Tunneling Process Control), developed by Babendererde Engineers GmbH. The paper demonstrates how TPC was used for oversight, analysis and QA on a complex tunneling project and how contemporaneous review and management of data results in a better understanding of TBM performance than can be obtained by retrospective analysis of data.

At a recent meeting of the North of England Institute of Min ing and Mechanical Engineers, during a discussion upon the com pression of air, attention was called to an apparent anomaly in the phenomena attending the compression. At a subsequent meeting this apparent anomaly was explained by Prof. Herschel, and all the facts observed shown to be strictly in accordance with the laws of thermodynamics. Upon reading the report of the discussion in the published transactions of the society, it occurred to me that an attempt to determine mathematically the amounts of energy (whether in the form of heat or of work) expended and absorbed in compressing air, and causing it to perform work by expansion, might prove of use to some who have not access to any treatise upon the application of the laws of thermodynamics to the compression of air, and who have not the time or the inclination to make such application for themselves. A system of differential equations describing the temperature behavior of fluid injected at constant surface temperature in a well is derived and .solved analytically. A formula for the fluid temperature at any time and depth is given, as well us a special formula valid for very large times. These formulas are used to calculate temperatures for several typical cases. The results indicate that, initially, the temperature of the water entering the formation is considerably lower than the injection temperature. This condition lasts for only a short period— less than three days for most cases of practical interest. Following this highly transient period, during which the temperature of the fluid entering the formation builds up to about 50 to 75 per cent of the injection temperature. the system enters a quasi-steady state in which the temperature changes are very slow. After severl years, the bottom-hole temperature will still be 50" to 100°F lower than the injection temperature, hilt the heat losses may he tolerable. INTRODUCTION Predicting the behavior of a hot-water flood requires that the temperature of the water entering the injection interval be estimated. This report describes the development and solution of a system of equations which describes the temperature behavior of the injected water in the wellbore with certain simplifying assumptions. The only previous means known to the authors for describing such a process is that of Moss and White.' Their results appear to be close to those obtained by our method in the practical cases which were compared; this agreement is largely due to the fact that in our method temperature soon approaches a quasi-steady state, as was assumed in their method throughout. However, our model covers all times, is continuous (whereas the Moss-White model depends on breaking the depth into discrete intervals) and. we feel. more closely describes the physical problem. FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM PHYSICAL SYSTEM AND ASSUMPTIONS The injection procedure consists of pumping water at a fixed surface temperature T., down an infinitely long cylindrical well or tubing of inner radius Any material exterior to the water column such as mud, casing, or cement is regarded as part of the formation. The general behavior of the system may be described qualitatively as follows. When the hot water is first introduced into the system, the temperature difference between the formation and the water is large, resulting in a high rate of heat transfer. As a result, the temperature adjacent to the wellbore rises very quickly. Because the segment of the formation adjacent to the wellbore largely controls the heat transfer rate, the heat transfer rate will become relatively constant when this portion has reached a temperature close to that of the water opposite it. The temperature of the water and formation then increase very slowly with time. The length of the initial highly transient period and the temperature of the water at its conclusion will be functions of depth, injection rate, injection-string radius, surface injection temperature and the physical properties associated with the water-formation system. The following additional assumptions were made. 1. There is no heat transfer by radiation in the system. 2. There is no heat transfer by conduction in the vertical direction in either the injection stream or the formation. 3. The linear volumetric and mass flow rate of the water is constant throughout the injection stream. 4. No horizontal temperature gradient exists in the injection stream. 5. The product of density and heat capacity is constant for both the water and the formation, and the formation thermal conductivity is constant. 6. Initially, both the water in the wellbore and the reservoir are at a temperature given by the (constant) ambient surface temperature plus the product of depth and geothermal gradient (assumed constant). Many of the support concepts currently used in the United States originated in South Africa. These products include the Hercules Crib1, Propsetter, MX Prop, Rocprop, and Spider Prop. Another recent development has been the introduction of hydraulic prestressing units, such as the Jackpot system, to various U.S. standing support systems. Several other prop-type supports with similarities to systems used in South Africa are in use in U.S. coal mines. Some exciting new developments that improve the installation and yield performance of props are also underway. In addition to prop-type supports, crib-type supports and single-unit systems such as the Can support are also frequently utilized in longwall tailgates in the U.S. The goal in U.S. support development is to enhance roof support capability while alleviating material handling barriers to reduce injuries associated with support handling and installation. Support products are generally full-scale tested at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in the unique Mine Roof Simulator load frame. The performance testing protocol is designed to simulate the full range of load conditions that occur in underground mining to identify the performance deficiencies and limitations of the support products. Once the products complete the performance evaluation, they are implemented into the NIOSH Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP). STOP is a window’s based software program that was developed by NIOSH for facilitating the design of standing roof support systems. STOP has become an industry standard to compare the performance capabilities and facilitate the application of these support products into various mining conditions. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the support design and application philosophy in the United States.
