C. G. Dunn(General Electric Research Laboratory)— It is well recognized that understanding of the formation of the cube-on-edge texture in annealed commercial cold-rolled Si-Fe strip is important industrially as well as scientifically. I would like to make a few remarks on this subject, discuss some points in the present paper, and list two remaining problems that appear to be particularly outstanding. Attention should be drawn to the paper by P. K. Koh,23 which also considers the kinetics of secondary recrystallization in 3 pet Si-Fe, produced commercially by the Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp. Koh covered a much larger temperature range than do either the present authors or P. N. Richards, whose work is mentioned in a footnote. Koh found an induction period (of short duration) even for isothermal anneals at 1260oC (2300°F). Koh and Dunn24 also found a change in texture during the 1260oC anneal for the same material. On the other hand, the material in coil D, according to Philip and Lenhart, underwent no sec-condary recrystallization, only continuous grain growth. The grade classifications of the four coils studied would suggest, however, that all four materials had developed the cube-on-edge or (110) [001] texture, but to varying degrees. This investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine if high-purity ductile molybdenum of uniform quality can be prepared by bomb reduction techniques. Molybdenum trioxide (Mo03) and mixtures of molybdenum dioxide (Mo02) and trioxide were reduced by magnesium in closed steel bomb reactors. Very high pressures in excess of 5,000 p.s.i. developed during magnesium reductions of Mo03. The addition of calcium oxide to the bomb charges caused a significant reduction in pressure. Reaction efficiencies higher than 95 percent were obtained during magnesium reductions of either Mo03 or mixtures of Mo02 and Mo03, but high pressures were encountered when the charges contained from 30 to 60 percent Mo02. Reaction efficiencies were usually low (less than 80 percent) when the bomb charges contained more than 40 percent Mo02. The charges with the best composition considering operating pressure, yield, and purity contained from 10 to 30 percent Mo02. The addition of small amounts of carbon to the reaction charges was helpful because some deoxidation occurred during the reduction and also during subsequent arc-melting of the regulus metal. The purity of the bomb-reduced, arc-cast molybdenum metal ranged from 99.2 to 99.8 percent and in some instances the metal contained as little as 5 parts per million oxygen.

The geological mapping of Lincoln and Flathead Counties was a five-year project undertaken by the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology. This paper, written by the Project Geologist of the survey, is primarily concerned with the stratigraphy of the Belt rocks encountered in mapping. Lincoln and Flathead Counties of northwestern Montana are underlain by sedimentary rocks of the Belt Series of Precambrian age. In only a very small part of the area, near Libby and Troy, have economic mineral deposits been worked with any success. Most of the area has been inadequately mapped as to geology. The region is crossed by the Great Northern Railway and served by the Pacific Power and Light Co.; officials of these two companies believed that with better geologic maps, prospecting might be stimulated and lead to the discovery of mineral resources that would contribute to new economic development within the area. A cooperative mapping agreement was proposed jointly by the two companies to the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology in May 1958, and thus was born the Kootenai-Flathead five-year project. The dual objectives of this project are: 1) the possible location of mineral deposits of economic value, and 2) the ''stimulation of prospecting exploration" by others. This was to be achieved by geologic mapping of some 6800 sq miles and by establishing a field office in Kalispell where prospectors could come to have their rocks and minerals identified and receive geological advice on their problems. This writer has finished four field seasons as Project Geologist and thus became familiar with the Belt section in the Libby, Yaak River, Ural, Thompson Lakes, Pleasant Valley, and Stryker quadrangles (see Fig. 1). Progress on the project is given in annual reports issued by the Bureau.* This *Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, Bulletins 12 (1959), 17 (1960), and 23 (1961). paper is concerned essentially with the stratigraphy of the Belt rocks so far encountered in mapping. PREVIOUS WORK IN THE AREA Willis28 made the first study of the stratigraphy and structure in the Lewis and Livingston Ranges of Glacier Park just east of the project area. In 1904, Daly made a study of the Belt rocks of the 49th parallel, using the names from bottom up, Creston, Kitchener, Moyie, and Gateway, for rocks ranging in age from that of Prichard to that of basal Missoula group. Walcott26 studied the Belt rocks exposed in the Mission Range (see Fig. 1) and other areas to the south of the area under discussion. Calkins and McDonald made a reconnaissance of northern Idaho and northwestern Montana in 1905. Calkins was the first to use Walcott's term 'Ravalli' as a group name for the strata equivalent to the Burke, Revett, and St. Regis formations (see Table I). The effect of transitiorz element bitzary solid solution additions upon the recrystallization temperature of columbium has been investigated. The elements Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, W, Re, and 0s OWY the yecystallization tempel-aturye, while Ti, V, CY, zr, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Hf, Ta, W, Ir, and Pt mise it. A correlation is kloted between the rate of chatzge of recyystallization tewaperature with atomic hercent solute and the free atom electron configuration of the solute element. The work of Abrahamson and Grant1 has indicated a correlation between the free atom ground-state electron configuration and the change in brittle-ductile transition temperature per atomic percent solute in chromium base alloys. A similar correlation was observed for the change in the recrystallization temperature of iron base alloys by Abrahamson and Blakeney and Abrahamson. It was also observed that the limit of rapid change in recrystallization temperature also Correlated with the electronic configuration of the free solute atom. A further study by Abrahamson4 established the generality of the phenomenon by yielding similar results for vanadium base dilute alloys. It has been inferred that a peri- odicity might be expected with changes in the free atom electron configuration of the solvent element. This study is the third set of transition base metal systems to be studied. It is the object of this and further studies on transitional metal systems to detect any systematic variations in the observed correlation which might contribute to the understanding of the electron interactions which are evidently exhibiting themselves. PROCEDURE All alloys were made using 99.9 pct Cb with 0.030 Ta, 0.016 0, 0.0025 H, 0.003 Mo, 0.021 Fe, 0.005 C, and 0.002 N. The solute elements were 99.9 pct pure. According to the published binary phase diagrams5 and metallographic examinations at X750, all additions were in solid solution. The alloys were arc melted and remelted 6 times in the form of cubic 400-g buttons under an argon atmosphere. They were then hot forged at 1200oC to 0.6-in. diameter, annealed for 3 hr at 1200o under argon, and furnace cooled. The specimens were then machined to 0.400 -in. diameter. Grain size was checked and found to remain essentially constant at 150 i 30 grains per sq mm. The specimens were then cold swaged to 0.187-in. diameter, yielding 46 i 1 pct cold work. All alloys were chemically analyzed for the major solute. Analyses of random samples indicated that the impurity content remained at the values of the starting material. Tungsten contamination was held to 0.007 pet.

This chapter is written primarily from the standpoint of development of flotation processes for treatment of specific ores. However, most of the principles and techniques discussed are equally applicable to other forms of applied flotation research such as improvement of procedures in existing plants and development of new reagents or methods without reference to specific ores. Because it is not possible to cover this subject in detail here, much of the material presented is in the form of a guide to the literature, with emphasis on readily available, English language publications. Details are included only if considered to be widely applicable or not readily accessible in the literature. Related subjects which are covered elsewhere in this volume, such as flowsheet design and statistical techniques, are not emphasized in this chapter. The material presented is intended primarily for those familiar with the theory and practice of flotation, but with limited experience in applied flotation research. It may be of value to the experienced investigator as well, by calling to his attention some useful viewpoints or techniques that he may have overlooked. It has often been said that flotation is more of an art than a science. In- deed much of the knowledge of flotation behavior is empirical. However, the unsystematic, artisan approach to flotation problems results only in an ac- cumulation of unrelated data. Like any other physical or chemical process, flotation is amenable to investigation by systematic experimental methods. The experiments should be based, as far as possible, on an understanding of the natural laws that govern the process and on good experimental procedures. SAMPLING OF A DEPOSIT In working out a flotation process for a mineral deposit, no step is more important than that of obtaining a suitable sample or samples. Experimental procedures cannot compensate for the lack of a representative sample. Methods of sampling a deposit have been published elsewhere,l-4 but a few points are of special importance from the standpoint of flotation. First, the sample should be representative of the deposit, not only in respect to chemical composition, but also in respect to mineralogical composition and degree of dissemination of the valuable minerals. [One of the major problems in the purchase and sale of coal shipped in lake or ocean going vessels has always been the difficulty in obtaining a true analysis of the shipped coal?s quality because of faulty sampling by manual methods. As long as coal was sampled according to standards set up by ASTM methods designated D 492-48 there generally were no quarrels with the results obtained. However, due to varied weather conditions and because of the large number of cars sampled, there is no assurance that prescribed manual methods of sampling will always be followed. Because of this problem, the organization previously called American Coal Sales Association, now part of the National Coal Association, set up a committee compose of representatives from coal producers, coal shippers and coal consumers to study this sampling problem and to devise, if possible, a means of sampling on the high lift dumpers which could be automated so that a; true sample of the coal as loaded in the railroad car could be obtained.]

A surplus of vanadium has resulted from the tremendous output of uranium, of which vanadium is a byproduct. More knowledge of the properties and characteristics of vanadium as a pure metal has been needed so that industry can take advantage of its availability and use it according to the best principles of conservation. Besides the problem of utilization, there is the ever present need of finding new materials which will satisfy specific and demanding requirements of science and engineering; vanadium or one of its alloys may possess the latent potential for filling some of these needs. Thus this? research project was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine and examine some of the physical and mechanical properties of pure vanadium. A corallary investigation was the determination of the effect of the interstitial contaminants, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon, on unalloyed vanadium. The vanadium used for these determinations was principally the product of experimental production of the Bureau. The evaluation of this material, as small quantities became available, provided most of the data that have been obtained.

Heat of formation values for mercuric sulfide appear in all the comprehensive listings of thermodynamic data, but experimentally determined entropy values have been lacking. Consequently, all free energy calculations involving mercuric sulfide have been based upon estimated entropy values. This paper reports Bureau of Mines measurements of the low-temperature heat capacity of red mercuric sulfide (cinnabar) and the entropy value at 298.15° K. derived therefrom. The entropy value was combined with heat data to obtain free energy values for the formation of red mercuric sulfide from liquid or gaseous mercury and from rhombic or gaseous diatomic sulfur.

STUDIES of grain boundary migration in zone-refined metals have all shown that the rate of migration is greatly reduced by small added solute concentrations. However, it is apparent that a difference exists between boundary migration during normal grain growth and single boundaries migrating in a bicrystal to consume a substructure. To effect the same reduction in velocity in the two cases, much more solute is required for grain growth than for the single boundary experiments. One case is available for direct comparison; both Bolling and winegardl and Aust and utter' added silver and gold to zone-refined lead to study grain growth and single boundary migration, respectively. For comparable reductions in migration rates, about 500 times more solute was required to retard grain growth than to retard the single boundaries. A reason for this difference is suggested here. The rate of grain boundary migration is dependent on solute concentration and must therefore also depend on the solute distribution; i.e., regions of higher solute concentration encountered by a moving boundary must produce greater retardation and thus could determine any observed rate. A dislocation substructure can be the source of a nonuniform solute distribution since it can attract an excess concentration of certain solutes. In fact, it is probable that the solutes which impede grain boundary migration most would segregate most severely to a substructure for the same reasons. Thus a dislocation substructure present in a crystal being consumed could locally magnify the concentration of solute confronting an advancing grain boundary. In the single boundary experiments a low-angle substructure, within single crystals obtained by growth from the melt, was used to provide the driving force to move a grain boundary; in grain growth, no substructure of this magnitude was present. The increased solute concentration at subboundaries should be given approximately by C, = G e c,/kT, where t, is a binding energy and CO the bulk concentration. To account for the difference between the two experiments in the Pb-Ag and Pb-Au cases, C, must be the concentration impeding the single boundary migration, and a value of t, = 0.25 ev is necessary. This is reasonable, even though calculation on a purely elastic basis gives t, = 0.12 ev. because electronic effects must enter for silver and gold in lead. The compound AuPbz forms3 and the metastable compound AgrPb has been reported to nucleate at dislocations prior to the formation of the stable, silver-rich phase.4 Other observations support the hypothesis that a magnified solute concentration impedes the single boundary migration. For example, some crystals were grown by Aust and Rutter at concentrations of ~ 0.1 wt pct Sn and 2 x X at. pct Ag or Au which exhibited a cellular substructure, and in these crystals no boundary migration was observed. It is therefore evident that the higher concentrations at cell boundaries drastically inhibited migration. Inclusions would not have been responsible for this inhibition since according to recent work on cellular segregation,5 no second phase should have occurred in the segregated regions at the cell boundaries for the conditions of growth used, at least in the Pb-Sn system. In the purest lead, only the "special" boundaries observed by Aust and Rutter gave rise to the same activation energy as that obtained in grain growth. It is reasonable to suppose that the structure of special boundaries does not favor segregation at low concentrations and thus solute, or an inhomogeneity in its distribution, would have no effect. Random boundaries, on the other hand, are affected by solute and the substructure would enhance residual concentrations in the zone-refined lead, leading to a higher activation energy. It is clear, even without a detailed theory, that the apparent activation energies and exact solute dependence in the two experiments must be different as long as the non-uniform solute distribution produced by the substructure is important. Recrystallization experiments should also be susceptible to the same kind of local segregation at subboundaries or disloca tion cell walls; a suggestion similar to this has been made by Leslie et al.' Following the arguments presented here, the effects of a given solute concentration would be like those observed by Aust and Rutter if segregation occurred, and like those of grain growth otherwise. A method of chemically polishing silver for metal-lographic examination has been developed. The samples are prepared by polishing on 0, 2/0, and 3/0 paper. They are then polished on 600 micro-cut paper, followed by a final mechanical polish on a cloth containing 5µ diamond paste. The samples are then chemically polished in a solution of 100 cc of saturated chromic acid and 5 cc of a 5 pct HC1 solution. The chemical polishing is performed by swabbing with a cotton ball saturated with the solution. During the chemical polishing, the sample is rinsed frequently in running water. Polishing in this manner for 5 min is sufficient to remove the strained material from the previous polishing operations. The amount of material removed is approximately 4µ/min. The surface obtained is flat and free of pits. Fig. 1 is an interference micrograph of a silver surface polished by this technique. If the solution employed is of improper HC1 content, an interference color film will form on the sample. This film can be removed either by swabbing with a cotton ball saturated with ortho-

The construction of refineries and gas conservation plants in the general Edmonton area in the early 1950's made available large quantities of by-product liquified petroleum gases (LPG). These gases, together with discovery of increasing reserves of natural gas in the Edmonton area, provided Canadian Chemical Company with two of the necessities for petrochemical production, namely, available and reasonably priced raw materials and fuel. This paper outlines the development of the $83 million Edmonton plant from its origin, together with a brief description of the processes and some of the interesting features involved. Several economic aspects of the petrochemical industry are high-lighted including its importance to the local community and the province. The paper reviews the relationship between the oil and gas industry and petrochemical manufacturing and indicates some of the factors that may affect the future growth of the petro-chemical industry in Wes tern Canada.

Either (100) (001] or (110) (0011 oriented secondaries, or both, depending on annealing atmosphere and material composition, grew in a matrix of 2-dimensional grains. The growth dependence of secondaries of(hkl) orientation in the iron and 0.6 pct Si-Fe is explained in terms of surface energy driving forces and the dependence of these driving forces on both (hkl) orientation and amount of oxygen at the surace. (100) [001] grains grow when suflicient oxygen is present at the gas-metal interface to make y100 the lowest (hkl) surface energy. When little or no oxygen is present at the gas -metal interface, making Y110 the lowest surface energy, (110) (001 1 grains grow. When Y100 and y110 are approximately equal but lowest among (hkl) surface energies, both (100) (0011 and (110) (0011 grains grow simultaneously. An excess of surface oxygen produces complete grain growth inhibition in high-purity iron; i.e., a 3-dimensional grain structure is retained over long annealing periods. However, a small amount of silicon in the iron reduces the growth inhibiting tendency of oxygen without altering the (hkl) surface energy relationships. Some information on annealing twins is presented. SECONDARY recrystallization in high-purity a iron, cold rolled to strip a few mils thick, was reported recently.' The present paper provides additional information on this subject, also furnishes similar information on both zone-refined iron and a high-purity 0.6 pct Si-Fe alloy, and treats the more important surface phenomena that determine to a large extent whether one or more secondary recrystallization textures will appear during annealing. Previous studies on high-purity 3 pct Si-Fe2,3 have shown the importance of (hkl) and impurity-atom dependent gas-metal surface energies on the formation of secondary recrystallization textures in high-purity material. For example, either (100) or (110) oriented grains may have the lowest surface energy depending on the amount of oxygen at the gas-metal interface, and hence the highest driving force for growth if other growth factors are the same. Another important phenomenon in high-purity material is stabilization of the matrix structure; neither impurities nor a strong matrix texture seem to be necessary when recrystallization and normal grain growth occur, developing a stable two-dimensional type grain structure. The average grain size in such a structure is usually between one and two times the specimen thickness. Consequently, most of the grains have grain boundaries terminating at exposed surfaces, and this results in gas-metal interfaces (or hkl surfaces) as well as

Self-diffusion coefficients of aluminum have been measured by the capillary reservoir technique in liquids of the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 system containirg equimolar portions of CaO and SiO2, in the temperature range 1400o to 1520oC. For the melt containing 6.0 mole pct Al2O3 the results can be expressed by the equation D = [(4.3 * 0.3) x 104] exp [(-85,000 * 17,500)/RT]cm~sec-'; for the melt containing 12.5 mole pct Al2O3, by the equation D = (5.4 i 0.2) exp [(-60,000 * 10,00O)/RT] cm2sec-: A concept of the constitution of these melts has been developed which proposes that the ratios O/(Si +Al) and Al2 O3/CaO determine the dominant species present. In recent years considerable work has been done on the system CaO-SiO2-A12O3 with a view to elucidating the structure of liquids of this system. Conductivity,' electromotive force, 3 density,4 and activity5 measurements have all contributed to an understanding of the problem, but as yet there is no entirely satisfactory theory that can account for all the observed experimental results. In principle, measurements of self-diffusion coefficients should give further information which is not obtainable in other ways. Self-diffusion coefficients for calcium, silicon,6 and oxygen7 have been measured. The present investigation extends the series of self-diffusion coefficient measurements to include aluminum and develops a concept of constitution for liquids of this system which is compatible with all the observed experimental results. EXPERIMENTAL The technique used in the measurement of the self-diffusion coefficient of aluminum was the capillary-reservoir method,8 A126 being incorporated in the melt contained in the capillary and inactive aluminum in the reservoir melt. This method was chosen because it minimizes convection currents' in the diffusion zone. It has the further advantage that the boundary conditions are such that a slight modifica- tion of Anderson and saddington's8 solution of Fick's Law yields an equation which requires measurements only of the length and the initial and final average specific activities of the solidified melt within the capillary. where t is the diffusion time, Co is the average specific activity of the melt contained in the capillary at t = O, C is the average specific activity of the melt contained in the capillary at t = t, 1is the length of the capillary, and D is the self-diffusion coefficient. The equation is of somewhat different form than those previously applied to high temperature diffusion studies because the specific activity of the melt in the reservoir was negligible both before and after diffusion. The diffusion apparatus is shown schematically in Fig. 1. It consisted of a silicon carbide resistance furnace containing the inactive melt in a graphite crucible, internal dimensions 7/8 by 4 in., enclosed in a 1 1/4- by 1 1/2- by 30-in. McDanel tube. A 3/8-in. McDanel thermocouple sheath to which graphite radiation shields and a graphite protection tube were affixed, was used to hold the capillaries. By moving this sheath through a rubber seal at the top of the McDanel tube the capillaries could be lowered into or raised out of the melt. Temperature was measured with a Pt-Pt 13 pct Rh thermocouple which was calibrated periodically against a standard couple. The furnace temperature was controlled to ± 5°C through the thermocouple immersed in the melt. Temperature variation over the depth of the melt was less than ± 3°C. The inactive melts were prepared from pure native quartz, assaying better than 99.9 pct SiO2, A.R. grade A12O3 and A.R. grade CaCO,. Single crystals of aluminum, brass, and copper oriented for (100) and (110) slip were extended at 25°, 400°, and 600°C in simple shear. Aluminum specimens oriented for nonoctahedral slip began to shear at a higher critical resolved shear stress than specimens oriented for octahedral slip. Parabolic stress-strain curves were obtained from zero strain. The initial rate of parabolic hardening was lower for specimens sheared on the (100) plane in a close-packed direction <110>, than for specimens sheared in a nonclose-packed direction <100>. metallographic evidence, however, showed that all slip traces could be explained in terms of (111) <100> slip. All attempts to cause nonoctahedral slip in copper and 70-30 a-brass single crystals were unsuccessful. Instead of shearing, the crystals bent, allowing {111} type planes to come into action. NONOCTAHEDRAL slip in aluminum has been reported under three different conditions: first, as the main mode of slip in tension experiments at elevated temperatures;&apos;-&apos; second, as the main mode of slip in direct shear experiments at room temperat~re; and third, as a minor mode of deformation, i.e., as cross-slip, in tension, shear, and bicrystal experiments at room and elevated temperatures."-l2 However, as far as the author knows, nonoctahedral slip has not been reported in either copper or 70-30 a-brass. The present study was undertaken to determine whether nonoctahedral slip could be obtained in aluminum, brass, or copper at room or elevated temperatures when the shear stress was approximately constant over the cross-section, a maximum at the center, or a maximum at the surface. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A detailed description of the crystal preparation and shearing apparatus has been given previo~sly. Cylindrical crystals 1/2 in. in diam and 8 in. long were grown from the melt in a temperature-gradient furnace. The aluminum contained 0.001 pct Zn, 0.001 pct S, and 0.001 pct Fe; the 70-30 brass contained 0.015 pct Pb, 0.001 pct Fe, 0.01 pct Ni, 0.02 pct Sn, and 0.005 pct Se; the copper was certified OFHC of 99.98 pct purity. All samples were electropolished prior to testing. The shear apparatus was a modified Bausch type. The strain sensitivity was 4 x lob4 Load was applied by clamping the rods attached to the shear plates in an Instron tensile machine. The rate of loading was 0.02 in. per min. In all cases a 1/8-in. gage length was used. For the tests performed at 400° and 600°C the shear plates, collars, and rods were made of stainless steel. These elevated-temperature tests were performed in an argon atmosphere. A) Aluminum at Room Temperature. Values of a and ß for the various slip planes and slip directions investigated are shown in Table I where a is the complement of the angle between the specimen axis and the slip direction, and ß is the angle between the specimen axis and the normal to the shear plane. The shear stress is a function of a (assuming ß - 0);10 when a is less than 27 deg, the shear stress on the slip plane for which the specimen is oriented has a maximum at the center of the crystal; at a = 27 deg the shear stress is constant across the slip plane; for a greater than 27 deg the shear stress is a minimum at the center. Fig. 1 shows the stress-strain curves for specimens cut from crystals 1, 2, and 5, which were sheared on the (010) plane in the [loll direction at room temperature. A simple, easily constructed apparatus suitable for the zone refining of iron and other reactive materials is described. After eight passes at one inch per hour, the iron produced showed a marked drop in hardness to 49 Brinell. In addition, an arbitrarily -defined recrystallization temperature was lowered by about 35°C and the rate of grain growth greatly increased. CERTAIN materials, of which iron is one, are so reactive that they cannot be zone refined in any known container without becoming contaminated. For such substances, the floating zone method ( 1) may be used. In this method, the specimen is supported vertically in an inert atmosphere and the molten zone supports itself by its own sur-face tension. The method was first applied to silicon (2) and has since been used for other reactive metals such as zirconium and titanium. The midwestern area referred to is the Illinois basin. The coals presently worked are mainly the No. 5 and No. 6 coal seams which vary in thickness from five to eleven feet. Present average of the more important No. 6 id about nine feet. The coal can vary considerably in toughness within the same mine with some coal perhaps rashing very easily and other coal being extremely difficult to cut. Top is generally well laminated shales with some fortunate areas having limestone roof. There are local areas with troublesome top of poorly laminated shales, shale with slickensides and shale intermingled with small partings and traces of coal. The bottoms are generally one to three feet of clay which softens readily on exposure to moisture. The mines are dry although some water is released and collects from rapid penetration of the seam by continuous miners. However, there are locally wet areas. Most of this material refers to mines of the Freeman Coal Mining Corporation. The mining operations written about are underground mines in southern and central Illinois.

An ion-exchange-instrumental analysis technique is described for analyzing impurities at 1 to 1,000 parts per million level in rare-earth metals. A cation-exchange flame photometric method is used for the alkali and alkaline earth groups of metals, and an anion-exchange procedure is used in conjunction with polarographic and X-ray fluorescence techniques for selected transition elements. The standard deviation is about 6 percent, and the average error, about 5 percent.

This report reviews and summarizes information on prevention and suppression of dust in mining, tunneling, and quarrying published in the United States during the years 1958 through 1960. Unpublished pertinent data developed or assembled by the Bureau of Mines during this period also are included. Silicosis statistics reported by the U.S. Public Health Service indicate a sizable silicotic population in the United States and suggest a need for greater dust-control effort. A joint medical-environmental survey was begun by the U.S. Public Health Service and the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the magnitude of the silicosis problem in the metal mining industry in the United States.
