Most analysts determining tungsten trioxide in low grade samples are aware that colorimetric procedures do not possess the inherent disadvantages of gravimetric methods operating on milligram quantities of tungsten trioxide. Apart from the inaccuracies associated with weighing four or five milligrams of ignited oxide in a platinum crucible of about 30 gm. weight with a large surface area to absorb moisture, using a 5 gm. charge on samples less than about 0·15 per cent tungsten trioxide, it is extremely difficult toget complete or pure precipitation of tungsten with cinchonine, cinchonine plus alpha benzoin oxime, rhodamine B or any other of the commonly used precipitants. Table 2', No. 8, illustrates the low results obtained by gravimetric as opposed to colorimetric procedures. In addition the colorimetric determination requires only a small portion of the time consumed by gravimetric practices and the increased accuracy obtainable in low ranges together with the saving in time made it highly desirable to develop a colorimetric method suitable for King Island ores.The most commonly used colorimetric method is that introduced by Feigl and Krumholz (1932), since modified by various investigators (Grimaldi and North, 1943; Sandell, 1946; Westwood and Mayer, 1947; Gentry and Sherrington, 1948; Freund, Wright and Brookshier, 1951; Grouthamel and Johnson, 1954; and others). Homestake crushing and grinding, practice-was completely revised during the period of 1951-1953. During the conversion, both crushing plants at the head frames the Ross and the Yates, were changes at each plant involved replacing the two 8K gyratories with a rebuilt, The flow sheet single thirty inch gyratory for primary crushing to four inch. The gyratory discharges to a seven foot Symons standard cone crusher set at 1-1/8 inch opening. The cone discharge goes to Tyrock screens fed by vibrating feeders. Screen openings, are l/2 inch by 5 inches: at the Ross. Plant, and 3/8 inch by 5; inches at the Yates. Screen oversize goes to a seven foot Symons cone brusher converted to the short head type; the crusher setting is 5/16 inch. Crusher, discharge; is closed circuited with the Tyrock screens, The above crushing installation delivers a minus 5/8 inch rod mill feed to the mill bins. The crushing revision eliminated the-180 heavy South African type stamps, which had previously reduced the 2 inch crushing plant product to a minus 5/8 inch feed for the 10 rod mills, and 8 ball and pebble.; mills, other revisions in the mill flow sheet, resulted in 3 identical units of about 1350 tons per day, capacity per unit, Each unit consists of an open, circuit 6 foot by 12 foot rod mill, fed from two 24 in by 48 inch vibrating feeders of the four feeders available per unit. A gathering belt delivers the ore discharge of the feeders to the Transportoweigher, which in turn discharge s, into the rod; mill feed spout. Rod Mill discharge is the feed for the 9 foot by 11 foot ball mill, The ball mill is closed circuited with a 16 foot by 30 foot Dorr Classifier. The Homestake make amalgamator, for coarse gold recovery in the ball mill circuit, made' necessary a 36 inch spiral conveyor between the classifier rake discharge and, the combination drum and double scoop feeder on the ball mill See Figure l - the flow sheet of the two stage grinding units.

ON THE 6TH JULY in the year 1953 an announcement was made to the public that touched off one of the greatest staking rushes in the history of mining in Canada and resulted, in tl1e space of a few short years, in the development of the greatest reserves of uranium-bearing ore in the world. It was ?On this date that the famous "Blind River back-door staking bee" was completed with the acquisition of some 2,000 claims by the Preston East Do me-Technical Mine Consultant teams under the direction of Mr. Franc Joubin and Mr. Robert C. Hart. That story has been told from coast to Coast and is too well known now to re-quire elaboration. Suffice to say that, in the short elapsed time of less tl1an five years from that momentous summer of 1953, three of the Algoma mines are in full production, three more are rapidly nearing full production, five more 1are approaching the production stage, a new hard-surfaced highway, 108, has been built to serve the area, and a brand new, completely planned city, Elliot Lake, is being built to provide the amenities of living to the 22,000 people already in the area.

During recent years there has been a marked increase in the use of explosives in Queensland coal mines. Delay detonators have been introduced and their use has extended with the wider application of mechanised methods of mining.The need for careful study of the characteristics of delay detonators is stressed so that the advantages of simultaneous firing, from the points of view of safety and efficiency, may be obtained. With their use new potential hazards are introduced. These hazardsare considered and means whereby the overall safety may be improved are discussed.The increase in the number of misfires since the introduction of delay detonators is shown and the examination of misfired detonators is described. Lessons to be learned! from these misfires are noted and details are given of the essential requirements for safe and efficient blasting using delay detonators.INTRonUCTIONOne of the aims of mechanization in coal mines is to reduce the physical effort applied to the winning of coal. Explosives play an important part in achieving this and, following the introduction of power borers for the drilling of shot-holes in Queensland coal mines, much of the arduous work associated with coal getting has been eased. During recent years there has been a marked increase in the consumption of explosives, as shown in Table 1, and it must be the aim of all to use these explosives safely and efficiently. A method of applying ammonium hydroxide to a drill stem containing hydrogen sulphide gas and hydro-gen-sulphide-bearing oil and water so as to remove the hydrogen sulphide as ammonium sulphide is de-scribed. It was concluded that the method allowed trips with drill pipe filled with sour fluids to be made more safely, more rapidly, and more economically. INTRODUCTION THE DANGER of poisoning rig crews during drill stem tests of sour wells by exposing them to hydrogen sulphide gas is well known in Canada. Concentrations of hydro-gen sulphide in sour gases range from 0 to 40 volume percent. There have been numerous casualties from hydrogen sulphide exposure during drill stem testing. Some have resulted in permanent injuries; in some cases the injuries have been fatal. For example, in Alberta in 1957 there were four deaths and 100 exposures which required medical treatment. These fatalities and injuries indicate the need for a more effective way of handling hydrogen sulphide in oilfield operations.

This morning I would like to speak to you about an area of chemistry that is enjoying a revival-organometallic compounds. This renewed interest, principally stimulated by defense needs, has already created new markets for the products of the mineral industry. Although the consumption of metals in these new products is modest at oresent, several hold promise of importance. Because this is a new and growing market, I am sure the Council of Economics is aware of many of its facets and is interested in new developments. Of course, the chemical industry has been a significant consumer of minerals for many years. I estimate that in 1957 the chemical-industry purchased a total of $1175 million worth of minerals as raw materials (not including fuels). The Inland Steel Company operates five underground iron mines in the Lake Superior District. The two largest of these, from the standpoint of productive capacity, are the Sherwood Mine in Iron River and the Bristol Mine in Crystal Falls, both on the Menominee Range of Michigan. It is at these two mines that we have had our principal experience with belt conveyor installations underground, .At the Sherwood Mine, which has an annual capacity of about 450,000 tons, the first conveyor belt installationwas made in 1947 when conveyors were installed in the main haulage drifts on the 1200 ft, level, It was estimated at that time that approximately 5,000,000 tons would be mined from the stopes above the 1200 ft, level and. that if all this material could be moved to the shaft by belt conveyor, the entire cost of operation, including maintenance and the amortization of the equipment, would be about $,05 per ton, which was slightly more than half of what the cost would have been by conventional tramming methods employing locomotives and cars. Now, ten years later, the 1200 ft, level is almost completely mined out and we have actually removed. 5,200,000 tons and. the average cost of transporting this material to the shaft by belt conveyor has been $.095 per ton. Since there has been a substantial increase in hourly rate of pay and also in the cost of materials since 1947, we feel that the anticipated savings were very nearly realized., The 1200 ft, level installation at the Sherwood consisted of two 36" trunk line conveyors 815 feet long and 380 feet long, respectively, deliverying ore to the shaft. These in turn were fed. by three lateral 36" conveyors which paralleled the sides of the orebody, These gathering conveyors passed under draw points to which ore was brought from the stopes by mea S of scrapers or shaker conveyors, Shaker conveyors were used for a number of years in conjunction with the conveyor belt system of haulage but it was finally concluded that with this particular type of ore, the maintenance on shaker conveyors was excessive. Therefore, more recently, we have gone back to scrapers for the shorter distances and. are using belt conveyors in the scraper drifts for the longer distances. After this belt system had been in operation for about three years, it had proved to be so successful that it was decided to proceed with the same system or. a new level to be opened up 200 feet below. Instead of sinking the shaft and driving a horizontal drift to the orebody on the 1400 ft, level, an inclined conveyor drift was started near the shaft at the 1200 ft. level and driven downwards toward, the orebody at a slope of 15 degrees. The conveyor installed in this inclined drift is 36" wide, 990 feet long, is powered. by a 100 hp motor, and is capable of delivering 300 tons per hour to the 1200 ft, level shaft pocket. It is fed by lateral horizontal conveyors on the 1300 ft? 1400 ft., and 1425 ft, sub levels. Wien the inclined drift was started, the rock was scraped from the breast directly to the rock pocket at the shaft. As the distance increased., double scraping was employed, until the advance had reached 350 feet, At this point a portion of the final conveyor was installed, with a scraper slide near the breast, T e drift was then advanced be scraping on to the conveyor until a sufficient distance had been driven to permit the installation of an additional 200 feet of conveyor. This proved to be a very efficient and economical means of moving the development rock to the shaft and obviated the need of using cars or an inclined skip way, At the present time 85 percet of tie entire mine output is being mined below the 1200 ft, level and is delivered to the shaft via the inclined conveyor. The system appears to be working as well and as economically as did the conveyor systemonthe 1200 ft, level.

Continuous processing plants handling liquids have achieved a high degree of centralized automatic control. Many chemical plants are operated from one room, with automatic control of the various process flow rates. These plants know from experience that automatic control can produce higher through-put, better uniformity of product, decreased operating costs and reduction of storage capacity, Plants which process materials in the form of bulk solids have not been able to use control to as great an extent, primarily due to the lack of measuring equipment capable of providing the same types of continuous automatic control available with liquid flow meters. This paper will describe a scale for measuring flows of bulk materials on conveyor belts which is particularly adaptable to remote centralized instrumentation and automatic control, and will also describe some typical control applications. Fig. 1 illustrates the basic method of measurement of this scale. A conveyor belt idler is supported on a rigid carriage which in turn is mounted in two anti- friction bearings on the conveyor stringers. The pivoted carriage is prevented from rotating about the pivot shaft by an electric strain gauge load cell connected between the carriage and a cross support. Increasing load on the conveyor belt increases the moment of the carriage frame about the pivot shaft, and proportionally increases the tension in the load cell. The belt speed is measured by a conventional d. c. tachometer generator driven from a pulley, usually on the return belt. The speed signal from the tachometer generator and the load signal from the load cell are combined to produce a signal proportional to the flow rate of material in tons per hour, or lbs. per foot, or equivalent units, It will be important to remember, in considering various control applications, that the flow rate of material on the belt is composed of these two component signals, namely the weight of material and the speed at which it is moving. The feed rate is then indicated and recorded by a self-balancing potentiometer of the type used for measuring temperature by means of thermocouples. These instruments may also be equipped with integrating mechanisms reading the totalized tonnage over a period of time.

The grade or quality of phosphate rock is expressed either in terms of its phosphorus oxide (P20S) content or the equivalent in tricalcium phosphate (Ca3(P04)2). Several of the commonly used methods for deter-mination of effective grain densities of minerals have been evaluated for accuracy and precision, and their applicability to various types of petroleum reservoir minerals tested. Consideration was given to the effect of consolidation, swelling clay, and wettability on these grain-density determinations. Procedures with helium displacement, a modified low-pressure Boyle's law porosimeter, and liquid displacement (water, n-decane, and n-octanol) were tested. The helium-displacement procedure was used primarily as an independent reference for which the effects of fluid-solid interaction, e.g., adsorption and wettability, were negligible. The procedures with the Boyle's law porosimeter and with liquid displacement are the methods in common use. Minerals investigated included calcite, West Texas limestone core samples, California sandstone core samples, and Wyoming bentonite. The number of samples tested, while not large, was adequate to permit application of statistical methods. Grain-density measurements on calcite (Iceland spar) provided a basis of comparison for the accuracy and precision of the procedures under investigation for a material with a high degree of chemical and physical homogeneity and for which fluid-solid interactions were at a minimum. Liquid-displacement procedures (water or n-decane) provided the greatest reliability and precision for measurement of the grain densities of the limestone tested. Gas-displacement procedures (helium or Boyle's law porosimeter) provided the greatest reliability and experimental convenience, if not the greatest precision, for the measurement of the grain densities of the swell- ing clay, Wyoming bentonite, and the shah sandstones which -contained appreciable amounts of swelling, in-terstitial clays. These experiments were designed to evaluate the applicability of the grain-density procedures in common we to some of the less tractable minerals—tight limestones, shaly sandstones, and swelling clays. The results should provide a useful basis for a selection of the method most suitable for application to the various petroleum reservoir minerals encountered and especially for use in the estimation of formation porosity. INTRODUCTION These experiments were undertaken to evaluate the accuracy and precision of several commonly used methods for determination of effective grain densities of minerals, and to test their applicability to various types of petroleum reservoir minerals. The accurate determination of the porosity of petroleum reservoir formations, in particular those of low porosity, has received much attention. Both bulk-volume and grain-volume measurements necessary in the evaluation of porosity have been examined by many investigators with the objectives of improving both the accuracy and the precision of these determinations. In this investigation statistical criteria for selection of the most reliable and suitable procedure for use with a given type of mineral are demonstrated. The grain-volume measurement procedures appear to be the most susceptible to improvement.

Galvanizers' sal skimmings have been treated by two methods of leaching in attempts to produce preflux solutions suitable for use in galvanizing operations. Both water-leaching and acid-leaching procedures are effective, except in severely exhausted skimmings when water-leaching becomes impractical. A preliminary analysis of the skimmings is not required. Solutions in the recommended concentration range can be produced conveniently by control of pH, specific gravity, and chlorine content. A technician would require only a short period of training to be able to perform the operations described.

The induction-electrical log is a combination of a SP curve, a short normal curve, and an induction log; all three logs being recorded simultaneously in a single run. The spacing of the short normal is 16 in. The induction log is designated as 5FF40, which means that the sonde involves five coils and a focusing system, and that the distance between the main coils is 40 in. Examples of induction-electrical logs are shown in Figs. 13 and 15. The right-hand track contains the induction conductivity curve. The scale of this curve is linear with the units of conductivity, i.e., mhos/m or millimhos/m (mmhos/m), increasing from right to left. The same curve can be read in the reverse direction as a resistivity log, with a hyperbolic scale. In the middle track, the solid curve represents the short normal. (An amplified short normal is also shown in Fig. 15). The dotted curve is the resistivity curve of the induction log, i.e., the reciprocal of the conductivity curve, recorded with the same linear scale as the short normal. The SP is in the left-hand track. In this combination, the SP curve and the 16-in. normal are the essential correlation curves, as in the conventional electrical log. The induction log provides a more accurate and detailed record of formation boundaries than the conventional log, especially in hard rock territories. Furthermore, the induction-electrical log makes possible the determination of fluid content, particularly in thin beds—at least qualitatively and very often quantitatively. In such thin beds, because of the adverse effect of the adjacent formations, the responses of the conventional devices are generally doubtful and/or incom-plete. Another advantage of the new combination is that the induction log is little affected by the presence of thin hard streaks interbedded within the permeable sections, whereas such occurrences are the cause of serious distortions of the long normal and lateral curves. The evaluation of saturation from any resistivity log implies the knowledge of the true resistivity R, of the bed and of the resistivity R.. of the flushed zone, or at least of the ratio Rxo/Rc. With the induction-electrical log run in fresh mud, the 16-in. nor-mal has a smaller radius of investigation than the induction log, so that the former reads closer to R.. and the latter closer to Rt. Thus, it has been observed that the ratio of the 16-in. normal to the induction log readings can be used as a basis for the interpretation in terms of saturation, with the help of appropriate charts. The purpose of the present paper is essentially to explain this procedure and to provide the corresponding charts. On the other hand, when a formation is deeply invaded, the response of any log (in particular the induction log) depends upon the radial distribution of formation resistivities behind the wall of the hole, which itself is a function of the arrangement of the fluids saturating the formation pore spaces. This paper, accordingly, will begin with a schematic description of the distribution of fluids and resistivities in the invaded zone. Next, some essential characteristics of the induction log will be reviewed. Finally, the determination of the interpretation charts and their application will be explained. The discussion will be confined to the case of fresh muds, i.e., muds whose resistivity is at least five times as great as that of the formation waters. With the present equipment the induction log is not well adapted for logging in salty mud. The Laterolog and guard electrode log are at their best under conditions of low resistivity mud. The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly some basic principles of ground- water hydrology that have application in mine hydrology. The development of a mine below the water table pleads for accurate values to answers of hydrology problems. Such problems involve both an inflow of water without adequate drainage facilities and a deficiency of water for the required use. Methods which give acceptable quantitative values for the solution of many ground-water problems depend on rather simple geologic structures, characterized chiefly by isotropic rocks of considerable areal extent. Unfortunately, mining operations are likely to be centered where isotropic rocks are not present. Consequently, methods that attempt to show values of the storage and transmitting capacity of rocks in mining areas must be applied with caution. In spite of complex geology and apparent uniqueness of individual mines and quarries, adherence to some concepts of ground water used by -hydrologists in the study of behavior of wells should be helpful to mine operators, The work of the Ground Water Branch of the U.S. Geological Survey through its history has been confined largely to the study of ground water as a resource, In view of the increasing number of problems relating to drainage of mines, the Branch started an investigation of mine hydrology in 1945 under the direction of W.T. Stuart, Mr. Stuart and other workers are making detailed studies of specific mine areas. In the present paper an attempt is made to synthesize some facts about ground water into usable form for the typical mine operator. Mining operations that extend below the water table disturb the natural hydrologic regimen, Prior to development, the water table slopes away from the site of a mine in at least one direction, but as soon as development begins and water is removed from the mine, the mine becomes the apex of a depressed cone in the water table, causing a convergence in the flow of water toward the mine. The behavior of the cone of depression, as it tends to deepen and increase in areal extent when the mine deepens, is related to the rate of withdrawal of water necessary to keep the mine dry. The significance and nature of the cone of depression in the vicinity of pumped wells has been studied by ground-water hydrologists for years, but the cone caused by pumping water from mines has generally been less systematically appraised.

It is a pleasure to have the opportunity of being here today to discuss the application of horizontal filters in the metallurgical industries. The use of horizontal type filters has been limited in metallurgical plants. However, in the recent past there have been new designs of this type equipment which greatly broaden their field of application. Through their use in many applications, important economies can be achieved over more conventional methods. The first of the modern continuous horizontal filters was initially developed by Oliver United Filters as their scroll type horizontal filter. This was an outgrowth of the old Oliver Sand Table that was limited to very coarse, free filtering pulps containing no appreciable amount of fine particles. The sand table was rather limited in application. The later continuous scroll type horizontal filter provided for a reverse air blow after discharge which reslurried the heel remaining and permitted the filtration of pulps containing finer particles. In the manufacture of phosphoric acid by the ?wet? process, the filtration of gypsum from the strong acid presented an extremely difficult filtration problem due to blinding of the filter media caused by crystallization of the soluble salts contained in the acid. A filter which allowed for continuous cloth washing was required, and this led to the development of the continuous pan type, and travelling belt type horizontal filters which provided for this need. Among the filters developed were the Prayon by Engineering and Industrial Corporation of Luxembomg for use in their phosphoric acid plants. They are one of the largest manufacturers of phosphoric acid in Europe. The Dorr-Oliver Traveling Pan Filter was also developed by Mario Giorgini, Manager of Dorr-Oliver?s Italian subsidiary, for use with the Dorr Company?s phosphoric acid process. Basically, there are four existing types of horizontal filters in commercial use at this time: The scroll discharge non-pan type, the continuous belt type (Lurgi), rotary pan type, and the traveling belt type. The construction and principle of operation of these various filters will be discussed.

A general description of the geology of the Southern Coalfield is given. The relationship between the Illawarra Coal Measures, the overlying Triassic and the underlying Upper Marine Series, of Permian age as are the Coal Measures, is briefly explained and thestratigraphy of each is described. The eight coal seams are then treated in slightly more detail as to their thickness, quality, areas of distribution and best occurrences.In the last few years each of the authors has been concerned with one phase or other of the stTucture of the field in detail or in mining operations with the result that it is now possible to name a number of monoclines, anticlines, domes and synclines defined in detail. A minor quantitative study has been made of faults and dykes with regard to form, direction intensity and inter-relationship. It seems probable that with the further collection of data a more detailed study in these matters will be of considerable value to the economy of mining in the Southern Coalfield.

This paper describes mining methods and practices of the Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Grant County, N. Mex. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. A similar program was conducted from 1928 to 1939, which helped to improve the efficiency of mining operations. The primary purpose of the program is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on methods, practices, and related features in mining mineral deposits. It is expected that the program will: (1) Promote efficiency in operating mines; (2) assist operators and engineers in evaluating and developing new mineral deposits; (3) provide data for engineering curriculums in mining schools; and (4) furnish performance and cost data for revising engineering handbooks and for inclusion in engineering textbooks.

The bucket elevator is probably the oldest known form of conveyor. Its history can be traced back to the days of Babylon where wicker baskets lined with a natural pitch and fastened to ropes operating over wooden sheaves turned by slaves, were used for the elevating of water into irrigation ditches. It is not unnatural for the bucket elevator to be the first in history, for even today engineers and designers recognize that well designed, correctly applied bucket elevators offer unequaled advantages over other bulk material elevating methods. The bucket elevator's vertical design saves valuable floor space. It provides flexibility of machinery layout with lowest initial capital expenditure, which is its principal advantage. While the advantages of the bucket elevator have long been recognized, there has been a tendency to lean away from its use because of high maintenance without reliability. CHAIN Belt Company found that the bucket elevator, if correctly applied, can be built to be as dependable and reliable as any other piece of machinery in today's modern processing plants. It is not difficult to understand why the bucket elevator is looked upon sometimes as a necessary evil in the material handling system. Very little has been published or written about the specific use or application of bucket elevators other than in manufacturers catalogs. Most of today's elevator application was set forth at the turn of the century by Hetzel (1). There have been many improvements made in the manufacturing techniques of elevator components, improvements in material selections, all which can be used to improve today's bucket elevator. To best understand the improvements which have taken place recently in the design and application of bucket elevators, an understanding of basic elevator principles is desirable. In general, it can be said that bucket elevators are classified into two basic types : (1) centrifugal discharge and (2) continuous. Elevators in use today are either of the centrifugal discharge type or the continuous type, or a combination of both in special applications.

The effect of heating a producing well on the rate of oil recovery has been analyzed in the simple case of a well producing oil by a radial drive and in the steady state. Differences of production rates with and without borehole heating have been calculated and plotted; these measure some of the benefits of the thermal recovery process. A striking feature is that the production increase tends rapidly to a constant value for large production rates. Some concrete examples, including a rough comparison with field data. are discussed. Heating requirements have been calculated and plotted on the assumption that the heaters used are 100 per cent efficient. Heating has been thought of as applying only to low volume wells producing heavy oils. However, the calculations suggest that the thermal process considered might be profitable even for some wells producing large quantities of light oil, especially in unconsolidated formations where fracturing is not possible. In the case of wells producing other fluids with the oil or of wells producing partly or wholly by gravity drainage, the theory developed does not apply in detail. It can be expected, however, that any general qualitative be-havior will remain valid. Under normal temperature conditions, high viscosity emulsions sometimes form around the wellbore, lowering the permeability in the vicinity of the well and impeding the production of oil. Borehole heating often prevents such emulsification. This important effect is not easily amenable to mathematical analysis and has not been included in the theory presented here. It should therefore be kept in mind that the benefits due to borehole heating may in fact exceed the values given by the following calculations. INTRODUCTION The recovery of viscous, low gravity oils can often be stimulated by applying heat to the production zone. The higher temperature lowers the viscosity of the oil, increasing its mobility, and therefore its rate of production. One thermal method of recovery 1,2,3,4. consists in operating a heater inside a producing well and, at the same time, producing oil from the well. In this paper a simple theoretical model is analyzed to study the effect of such heating on the recovery of oil. The reservoir mechanics of the process is the only aspect of the problem which is considered here. The details of the heating system are ignored, and it is simply assumed that the heater raises the temperature in the immediate vicinity of the producing well to a pre-assigned temperature T w. Although heating requirements are calculated, these refer only to the heat supplied to the formation and to the oil being produced; they do not include heat losses due to the inefficiency of the heater. A short outline of the theory follows: The heat supplied to the producing well flows out into the formation by means of thermal conduction. At the same time, the flow of oil carries heat by convection from the formation towards the producing well. After sufficient time has elapsed, a steady-state is reached where the temperature, the velocity of the oil, etc., no longer vary with time but are functions of position only. In the steady state the temperature decays like an inverse power from the high value Tw at the wellbore to the original reservoir temperature T. at some distance away from the well. The effect of the high temperature and low oil viscosity near the producing well is the same as if the oil were produced at reservoir temperature To but through a producing well of a larger radius.
