In the recent paper of Richardson and Perkins entitled "A Laboratory Investigation of the Effect of Rate on Recovery of Oil by Water Flooding,"' the authors found very little appzrent effect on oil recovery of having free gas saturation present prior to water flooding in unconsolidated sands. We agree that the effect in this particular system was small but do not feel that the data presented should be regarded as disproving work of others which has shown an appreciable effect. The authors do not make such a claim, but neither do they advance an explanation of the difference. In our experience the following factors must be carefully considered when studying the relation between residual oil saturation after water flooding and initial free gas saturation: (1) the magnitude of the inherent residual oil saturation, i.e., the residual oil saturation with no free gas; (2) the increase in oil-water viscosity ratio with pressure lowering if the gas saturation is obtained by solution gas drive; and (3) the oil shrinkage which occurs with pressure lowering and gas evolution. The system studied by Richardson and Perkins gave residual oil saturations as low as 20 per cent without free gas present, and one should perhaps not expect much further lowering. As an illustration of the magnitude of the effect when the residual oil saturation is inherently higher we submit the accompanying figure. These data were obtained on an unconsolidated sand under elevated pressure in a system similar to the one described by Richardson and Perkins. Gas saturation was established by gas drive before water flooding. The viscosity ratio was 600:1 under the conditions of the displacement. Here the gas was extremely effective in reducing residual oil saturation. This fact was also indicated by Kyte, et al.2 Their plots of residual oil saturation vs initial gas saturation show trends of greater free gas effect with higher oil viscosities. The pressure-dependent effects were not discussed by Richardson and Perkins. They should be separated from the free gas effect if the objective of the study is a correlation of residual oil saturation vs initial free gas saturation. The increase in oil viscosity when gas is released from solution tends to increase residual oil saturation. This effect is rather small in the viscosity range of kerosene. A Buckley-Leverett calculation, assuming an increase in viscosity ratio from 1.2 to 1.8, indicates an increase in residual oil saturation of about 1 per cent of pore volume. Thus, one would expect this system, if operated at constant viscosity ratio, to show a slightly greater free gas effect. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous .sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

This report describes methods of using sodium for reducing titanic chloride, developed as part of Bureau of Mines activities at Boulder City, Nev., to improve the extractive metallurgy of titanium. Theoretical indications pertaining to the major chemical reactions and possible side reactions of the process are compared with experimental observations. Low-temperature reduction equipment is described, in which titanic chloride was reduced with sodium at temperatures between 97.5° C., the melting point of sodium, and 200° C. Techniques employed in making reductions in ball-mill and high-surface sodium reactors are given.

AN INCENTIVE or bonus system of payment is commonly used for mine labour. The incentive rates are usually based on the variable units of production, such as dollars per foot of drift advance or cents per ton of ore broken. Portions of the work that must be done to achieve the units of ?production are independent of the production unit and tend to be fixed work for the shift or for the job, irrespective of the production achieved. This fixed work has considerable influence on the equity of incentive rates. The effect of fixed work is to accelerate the loosening or tightening of rates if the production task is over-achieved or under-achieved, and of increasing the loosening of rates loosely set and the tightening of rates tightly set. This gearing of mine contract rates is the reason why changes in conditions, materials, equipment, or methods will change the incentive earnings to a greater degree than would normally be expected. Obviously, therefore, care should be taken in the setting of the task for incentive rates as the gearing makes an inequitable rate even more inequitable.

Although more than 100 thorium-rare earth minerals are known, only a few have any commercial significance. Monazite, thorite, bastnasite, and some exotic thorium rare earth ores are reviewed Commercial interest is presently centered on monazite from the Union of South Africa, and thorite from this country. Thorium became commercially important with the development of the incandescent gas mantle about 75 years ago, Gas mantles consist of thorium oxide with small amounts of cerium oxide. The thorium nitrate used to make gas mantles was first obtained from rare thorium minerals, As a matter of fact, this use of thorium is still important and is one of the largest commercial uses for thorium materials. The discovery of monazite sand placer deposits along the coasts of Travancore, India, and in some Brazilian beach s .s, and the development of the old North and South Carolina monazite stream placers gave the mantle industry of 30 to 40 years ago a comfortable inventory of thorium ore. Even today, the thorium industry depends largely upon monazite ores for its source of thorium. This paper will briefly describe some of the major thorium ores and their principal deposits insofar as they relate to the thorium industry in this country. Because of similar chemical and physical properties, thorium always occurs with the rare earth elements and with varying amounts of yttrium. Thorium may predominate over rare earths, as in thorite-type minerals, or may represent only a fraction of the rare earth content. Typical ratios of thorium to rare earths in various minerals are given in Table 1, The average thorium content of the earth's crust is about 12 grams per ton, and in this respect thorium approximates lead, molybdenum, and some of the rare earths in abundance. The ore minerals of greatest importance to the-thorium-rare earth industry are monazite, thorite-type minerals, bastnasite-type- ores, and the family of minerals which is characterized by a preponderance of the heavy rare earths and yttrium. The latter classification includes xenotime, gadolinite, samarskite, euxenite, etc, The first two, monazite and thorite, are of greatest significance.

Uranium metal with a purity of about 99.9 pct was produced on a large scale by fused salt electrolysis with a material efficiency of about 90 pct. The material efficiency depends mainly on bath composition, electrolysis temperature, electrode smothering, and elutriation during washing of the powder. RESEARCH and development work on fused salt electrolysis carried on by the Westinghouse Lamp Div. Bloomfield, N. J., was done under the Manhattan District Corps of Engineers and later under the Atomic Energy Commission for the commercialization of uranium production for the first atomic pile at the University of Chicago in 1942. From the conception of the atomic bomb project it was recognized that metals with impurity levels having little metallurgical significance would be required. Permissible impurity levels were based on neutron absorption. Of particular significance was boron, which could not be present in amounts exceeding 1 ppm. The electrolytic method as developed in 1930 by Driggs and Lilliendahl,1,2 and later improved, yielded uranium of very low boron and other deleterious impurity content. No other method was capable at that time of producing uranium metal of the required purity.' The low boron content of uranium produced by the electrolytic process resulted from the availability of the reactants which were low in boron content, and from the inherent elimination of boron in the fused salt bath. Since the heart of any electrolytic process is the electrolysis cell, this paper will deal with the development of the original bath composition for the efficient production of uranium from a batch process to one of continuous operation. Emphasis also will be placed on other factors which will affect the material efficiency of the process. With the laboratory cell the material efficiency of uranium powder recovery in the early electrolysis was relatively low, about 35 pct based on the ratio of uranium recovered to uranium added. This early process also had other defects. The electro- lytic bath could not be used continuously. After three runs from a freshly charged crucible, the deposit showed a tendency to slip off the electrode as it was raised from the bath. This condition necessitated pouring the charge every fourth run and preparing a new bath. It was assumed at that time that this condition was caused by the increasing fluoride concentration with each addition of uranium salt, which adected the mobility of the uranium ions. Experimental The electrolysis cells differed in size only. They were of the floating cathode type. The laboratory cells were 21/2 in. ID and 6 in. deep and operated at 30 amp and 5 volts. Production was about 150 g metal powder per 8 hr. The plant cells (5 units) were 9 in. ID x 21 in. deep and operated at 1800 amp at 12 volts. The total production unit was designed to produce 250 lb of uranium powder per 8 hr day. Because of the tendency of uranium fines toward spontaneous combustion, material efficiencies were based only on the recovery of useful coarser metal which could be safely handled. The reported efficiencies are of particular significance only as related to the same group of experimental procedures. At the start of the project no changes were contemplated until previous data could be definitely confirmed. Therefore, the first experiments were with the 50 pct CaCl2-50 pct NaCl mixture. The material efficiency of uranium deposition as a function of the number of electrolyses is shown in Table I. In Table I, the decrease in efficiency at 800°C with number of runs is apparent and confirmed the earlier data. Operating at 900°C enabled the number of runs to be doubled, but before pouring the charge the efficiency of recovery became poor. This test indicated that the improved efficiency might have been caused by an increase in the fluidity of the bath.

THE experiments described in this report were conducted as a part of a general program designed to document the deformation behavior of pure metals over a wide range of temperature. Material The silver used in this investigation was obtained from the Handy and Harmon Co. as 99.97+ pct pure. It is from the same length of wire as that designated H-H silver by Hoffman and Turnbull in their investigation of self-diffusion in silver.' The silver was drawn at room temperature from 0.060-in. diam to 0.020-in. diam wire without intermediate annealing. Seven-inch lengths of cold-drawn wire were annealed in groups of ten by placing them in individual quartz tubes spaced circumferentially about and near the vertical furnace axis. Dry nitrogen was passed through the furnace to lower the partial pressure of oxygen. The three annealing temperatures used were 700°, 800°, and 900°C, producing grain sizes of 0.017, 0.040, and 0.250 mm diam after 30 min at temperature. Testing Procedure The details of the testing procedure have been described in the reporting of results of a similar investigation of Copper. THE GROWTH of the major iron and steel industries on this continent and in many European countries was based on the use of as-mined, high-grade, lump iron ores and on the availability of metallurgical coking coals. The modern coke-fired blast furnace was developed for such materials and is one of the most efficient of ail pyrometallurgical processes. Most of the impure pig iron produced by blast furnaces was converted to refined steel by the Bessemer process in the years prior to 1900 but, when large quantities of low-cost steel scrap be-came available, the more flexible open hearth process was adopted by most large steel producers on this continent. Although this pro-cess has many desirable metallurgical features, the thermal efficiency is low, the capital cost is very high, and the method of charging scrap steel is inefficient by modern standards of material handling. In recent years several conditions have arisen which have stimulated the development of many new pro-cesses and the re-examination of the existing smelting and steelmaking techniques.

FROM equilibrium measurements on the system NaF-Na 3A l Fo-A 1 2 O 3-Na CO 3-CO 2 with high contents of NaF, Forland, Storegraven, and Urnesl concluded that complexes are formed containing two oxygen, three aluminum, and a less defined number of fluorine per complex. The same number of oxygen atoms per complex was also found by cryoscopic measurements for mixtures high in NaALF 6. In a recent paper by Stokes: some other complex ions, Al2O2F42- and AlOF2-, have been suggested. Here an additional argument in favor of the complex ALO2F. suggested by Forland, Storegraven, and Urnes will be given. When fused Na3AlF6 containing some A12O3, is cooled slowly, the solid phase will consist of the two components as separate phases. The melting point and the heat of fusion of Al2O3 are so high that this component will form the stable solid phase even though in the liquid state the complex may have a high stability. If, however, the fused mixture is quenched, the decomposition of the oxygen-containing complex and the formation of solid Al2O3 does not proceed fast enough, and a solid solution of A12O3 in Na3AlF6 is obtained. Zintel and Morawietz3 obtained cryolite containing 10 pct AL2O3 in this way. The density and the lattice parameters of the A12O3 containing cryolite were also measured, and from this it was concluded that the Al2O3 enters the cryolite lattice as Al3AlO0 groups replacing Na3AlF6 groups. However, the experimental data could as well be explained by assuming that one Na+ ion and two of its neighboring F- ions are replaced by one Al3+ ion and two O2- ions. A brief review is given of the history of the Colliery to date together with the reasons for the development of an additional seam.Investigations into the quality of the coal ami its suitability for the production of metallurgical coke and determination of the economic mining limits and coal reserves are discussed. The commencement of mining operations and the inter-seamarrangements necessary for the disposal of coal won are described with the stages in the opening out of the seam itself and the reasons for the installation of a 48-in. trunk conveyor belt. Choke and manning of face equipment are considered and also the work of secondary development and pillar extraction.It is concluded that with modern face equipment and conveyor belt lines, concentrated mining followed by immediate extraction of pillars is practicable and is giving excellent results at Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONBurwood Colliery, the total holding of which now comprises some 3,140 acres of land and 1,450 acres of sea leases, has mined the Borehole Seam since 1883. The early work took place from Nos. 1 and 2 shafts at Glenrock Lagoon and later on at Nos. 3 and 4 shafts at Whitebridge to which the centre of operations shifted in 1893, shaft sinking at this latter area having commenced in 1888.As all the early operations were confined to the Borehole Seam, reserves of coal on this horizon had been considerably reduced by the mid 1930's, so a cross measure drift was driven to the Victoria Tunnel Seam which is about 300 ft. above the Borehole Seam, and fully mechanized coal winning commenced from the second seam in 1938. Two counties in Illinois, Ope and Hardin, and three counties in Kentucky, Crittenden, Livingston and Caldwell comprise the entire Kentucky-Illinois fluorspar district. The output from these five counties, however, makes up over 60 percent of our domestic fluorspar production, amounting to some 175,000 tons of finished product in 1956, The area is rough and hilly. It is bisected by the Ohio River, and has numerous smaller rivers and creeks. Add to this a generous average annual rainfall, in excess of forty inches, and it is understandable that the-area-can boast of an ample water supply. An abundance of water, however, is unfortunately not always conducive to ideal mining conditions. The faulted structure of the area and the soluble Mississippian limestones make the subsurface sediments' willing hosts to the surface water. Limestone cavers and sinkhole topography also compound the occurrence of underground water. It is little wonder, then, that water frequently presents an economic problem in the area, particularly in vein-type mining.

Application of the usual chemical methods to the determination of beryllium in the mineral-dressing products of a spodumene pegmatite was found to be unsatisfactory as to speed, accuracy, sensitivity, and range of analysis. A spectrographic method is described for the determination of beryllium. Samples are ground, mixed with borax, high-purity, flake graphite, and an internal standard; then they are fused, reground, pelletized, and excited with a high-voltage-spark discharge. Investigation of several spectrographic techniques to overcome matrix effects are described. The method developed gives results for beryllium in the concentration range from 0.002 to 5.0 percent; the average probable error of duplicate determinations was below 3.0 percent of the quantity present. INTRODUCTION The main source of beryllium in pegmatite is the mineral, beryl. Many of the conventional methods for the determination of beryllium in beryl are not suitable for control purposes because of lack of speed and accuracy, especially in the range below a few tenths percent. Beryl resists the usual chemical attack and can be lost in a hurried chemical analysis.

THIS PAPER describes the re-grind section in the 2,000-ton per day, lead-zinc flotation mill of Canadian Exploration Limited, near Salmo, B.C. There are two re-grind units in operation, one in the lead circuit, and one in the zinc circuit. In each unit, the rougher concentrate is re-ground ahead of the cleaning circuit. These re-grind units have made valuable improvements in the concentrate grade, and with no loss in recovery by over-grinding galena or sphalerite. Since the initial installation of this re-grind section, the plant throughput has been increased gradually from 1,600 tons to 2,000 tons per twenty-four hours, and, as shown by the screen analysis of mill tailing, a coarser overall grind has been accepted, from 55 per cent to 45 per ?cent minus 200 mesh. There has been no increase in grinding capacity, but two mills have been taken from the main grinding circuit and used for the re-grind circuit.

Most iron ores treated by the R-N direct reduction process yield metallic iron products considerably lower in titanium, manganese, and chromium oxides and alkaline metal sulfates/sulfides than were contained in the original ores. These metallic iron products are suitable as feed stock for the open hearth and electric steel-making furnaces. The elements which are rejected in part are acceptable in the product since the product is designed to by-pass the blast furnace. R-N reduction conditions (PCO+H2-1 atmosphere, 1830° to 2150° F.) are adjusted for each ore. The iron ore which is reduced to 90 to 95 percent metallic iron is then subjected to the conventional beneficiation techniques. Under these conditions, 55 to 80 percent of titanium oxides, 75 to 95 percent of manganese oxides, 60 to 90 percent of chromium oxides and up to 97 percent of alkaline metal sulfates contained in the ore are rejected with the gangue to the non- magnetic tailings. The metallic iron products illustrated in this work contained 89 to 96 percent total iron, one to five percent TiO2, 0.2 to one percent MnO, 0.3 to 1.6 percent Cr2O3 and/or up to one percent alkaline metal sulfide. Usually only one of these components was present. Recoveries ranged from 80 to 96 percent of the iron in ore.

To obtain a better understanding of the crystallization of fluoride containing amphiboles from melts, an investigation of the range of stability between fluoramphi-boles and other minerals was conducted by the Bureau of Mines. This study has shown that the stability of fluoramphiboles is strongly influenced by both fluoride concentration and isomorphic replacement. Over 150 reactions were made with different compositions and reaction conditions. substitutions attempted and the phases that formed when the composition was crystallized by cooling from the melt are discussed. The attainment of equilibrium in these multicomponent systems is not claimed. Many ions that would be expected to enter the amphibole structure instead resulted in crystallization of phases other than amphibole. Those compositions that resulted in a high yield of acicular fluoramphibole by crystallization from the melts are shown in table 2. The fluoramphiboles obtained from melts typically had an acicular crystal habit and a hardness of 6 to 7 on the Mohs' scale. Although many had relatively high length to cross section ratios, none were fibrous; it was concluded that the possibility of synthesizing a fibrous fluoramphibole from a melt was low. However, many compositions can be crystallized into a tough, hard, impact-resistant mass of interlocking acicular crystals.

CESIUM-137 ISOTOPE began to displace cobalt-60 III the treatment of cancer during 1956. Production and Consumption.-Consumption of cesium and rubidium was approximately the same as in 1955. Production, however, decreased, as several companies shipped from stocks produced in previous years. South Africa was the source of most cesium and rubidium minerals used in the United States in 1956. Cesium and rubidium metals and compounds were produced from ore by: DeRewal International Rare Metals Co., Philadelphia, Pa.; Fairmont Chemical Co., Inc., Newark, N. J.; Foote Mineral Co., Philadelphia, Pa.; and Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo. Most sales were to domestic consumers, but small quantities were exported to Australia, England, Germany, and Sweden. New production facilities were under construction in. 1956 by San Antonio Chemicals to produce mixed potassium, rubidium, and cesium carbonates. A plant capable of separating and packaging 200,000 curies of cesium-137 annually was under construction at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.6

This report describes the carbonizing properties of the principal coal beds of McDowell County, W. Va. Coals from 14 coal beds were selected for study: Upper Cedar Grove, Middle Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Eagle, Douglas, Iaeger, Sewell, Welch, Beckley, Fire Creek and Pocahontas Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 9. Selection was based upon estimated minable reserves. McDowell County coals rank either as high-volatile A, medium-volatile, or low-volatile bituminous coal, and this variation in rank is reflected in the wide diversity of the carbonization properties of the coals. All coals tested were either satisfactory as mined or could be upgraded to meet present chemical standards for metallurgical coke; the coals produced strong coke, as determined by ASTM shatter and tumbler tests.
