Coal mining has been revolutionized by the continuous miner. This machine has replaced, or has combined into 1, 3 former operations: Cutting, blasting, and loading. During the 25-year period before this machine was introduced, advances had been made in transportation, but the actual "coal getting" remained virtually the same. As frequently occurs, the multiple-purpose continuous miner introduced a new hazard--more rapid liberation of methane. The coal output formerly obtained from 10 to 20 working places might now be obtained from 1. It is true that circulation of air was generally increased; but the bulk of this machine virtually precludes continuous flow of air across the face, where gas may accumulate. Apprehension about this possible hazard led the Bureau of Mines to test face atmospheres during operation; and Report of Investigations 5288, Methane Buildup During Cutting and Continuous Mining Operations (published in 1956), presents proof that real danger may be present in many otherwise well ventilated mines.

THE Juniper Prospect is in Carleton County, N. B., at approximately 46º 31' north latitude, 67º 20' west longitude. During the summer of 1955 an area in west-central New Brunswick was selected for aerial electromagnetic prospecting with American Metal Co.'s helicopter-mounted equipment. Generalized, small-scale government geologic maps had suggested that this area was located along the western border of the northeast-trending granitic backbone of northwestern New Brunswick and might be underlain by the Ordovician-Silurian sediments and volcanics that are the host rocks for the recently discovered sulfide deposits of the Bathurst-Newcastle district.

In the course of the grinding experiments conducted at Climax over the past twenty years one interesting phenomenon was discovered. This was that balls made of certain types of steel grind more ore than some others. The most significant variation was found in the results secured with a hard alloyed forged bail compared with the forged carbon ball supplied by most ball manufacturers These findings were confirmed in many repeated controlled tests. The value of these tests depends on the methods used, the facilities available and the care with which the investigations were conducted. These are described in the following. This testing has largely been done in eight 91 x 81 low discharge ball mills in closed circuit with 7811 duplex screw classifiers. The mills run at 20 RPM on a feed approximately minus 3/8 inch. The ore is ground through 28 - 35 mesh in one stage. Each mill and auxiliary classifier is in a separate, parallel grinding and flotation section The, ore to each: section is the same in every particular and is fed to each mill bin from a common conveyor tripper. The ore from the bin to the ball mill is weighed on a conveyor scale. The power input to each mill motor is determined with a watt hour meter which measures the power to the mill motor only. Both the scales and meters are checked periodically by standard methods and have been found to give consistent readings. Automatic samplers are employed on each section to obtain accurate measurement of the size reduction. A size analysis of the classifier overflow is made each shift and a composite size analysis is obtained from a weighted average of the various shift analyses. The mills are driven by 450 horsepower synchronous motors so that there is no speed variation and shell liner age is kept as nearly the same as possible in mills under test. The same set of operators is assigned to a mill under test as to the control mill. In all other particulars such as ball load, mill density, liner design, etc., the mills are operated in precisely the same manner. This is an ideal arrangement for plant testing. From observations of ball mill performance over the past twenty years, it is the opinion of the operating staff that variations of as little as one to two percent in mill capacities may be determined if sufficient operating hours are devoted, to a test. Relations between mill capacities, fineness of grinds and power consumptions have been established with a high degree of accuracy. In Table I are given the figures for one test. These show that while the grind with the hard ball was slightly coarser, the tons ground per hour was 5.4 percent greater with the soft ball, and 6.1 percent greater on the basis of minus 100 mesh produced. The power consumed per ton with the hard ball was 4.4 percent greater on a tons per hour basis. The soft ball was inferior in wearing qualities and steel consumption per ton of ore was 24 percent greater with it. In this test the mills were charged with the two different balls for a period of three months to allow the ball loads to come to equilibrium. In Table II are given the specifications of the two balls. The difference in grinding rates may be accounted for by the nature of the ball surfaces. The surfaces of the soft balls after being worn a while are rougher to the touch. Enlarged photographs of the worn-in surfaces of hard and soft balls are shown in Figure I. These show the presence of scratches or skid marks on the hard ball surface which indicates less nipping effect. The Climax ore pulp has a pH of 6.0 and is in a dispersed state. The viscosity is low compared with most ores especially those that are conditioned with lime. This would lower the tendency of the pulp to adhere to the balls with a lower grinding efficiency as a result. It was also thought that the relative rates of wear from surface to center might affect the make-up of an equilibrium ball charge. This probably has little effect on capacity as shown by the size analyses of the two ball charges in Table III. This hypothesis was subsequently investigated by the use of rationed charges. TRANSIENT potentials obtained in resistivity prospecting can be separated into two classes. The first is electromagnetic, has a comparatively short time constant, and increases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. These electromagnetic transient potentials, of which an excellent theoretical treatment is given by Yost: are the result of changes in the current and can be classed as differentiated signals. The second class is electrochemical, has a comparatively long time constant, and decreases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. The electrochemical signals are generated by the current flow itself and can be classed as integrated signals. The transient potentials due to electrochemical factors are the subject of this article. The phenomenon is referred to as induced polarization. Schlumberger" was the first worker to observe induced polarization, but he was unsuccessful in attempts to apply the principles of induced polarization in electrochemical prospecting. Other workers, notably Bleil; have studied polarization and in some cases pointed out its possibilities, but no theory has been presented that describes polarization and its time dependence adequately. It is the purpose of this discussion to present the essence of a theory to geo-physicists and to show that it leads to results consistent with experimental evidence. The theory on which this analysis is based has existed in electrochemical circles since 1910."

This paper traces briefly the reasoning which led to the decision to extend the existing internal shaft at the Rosebery Mine and to instal underground a larger winder (No. 2 Hoist) with capacity to handle all hoisting requirements to a depth of approximately 2,500 ft. on an incline varying from 83" to 55" to the horizontal. It then covers the specifications and selection of the winder, the design of the winch chamber, rope raise and bins, the excavation, support and lining of the chambers and the transport to site and installation of the machinery. Finally a brief description is given of the mechanical and electrical parts of the winder.INTRODUCTIONThe existing shaft winder on the internal inclined shaft situated on No. 8 Level of the Rosebery Mine had reached the limit of its capacity. Hoisting 21-ton capacity skips in balance, with a 13/16-in. diameter rope, it required four layers of rope on the 3 ft. 6 in.drums to reach the loading station under No. 12 level at a depth of 864 ft. (Fig. 1). This entailed heavy wear on the multi-layered rope and heavy stresses on the cheeks of the drums. Continuous working on three shifts was necessary to handle ore, men and materials, and a hold-up from any cause whatever meant an interruption to production on the lower levels of the mine. The maximum output of the hoist whilst hoisting from the No. 12 level loading station was 50 tons per hour. It was obvious therefore, that a larger winder was required if output was to be maintained.Diamond drilling had proved the existence of sufficient ore at depths well below No. 12 to warrant exploitation and a decision had to be reached on the means of hoisting this ore.

An account of a new method of investigating the electrical .properties J the earth's crust is presented. The method, called AFMAG, employs, as a source, natural alternating magnetic fields of audio and sub-audio frequencies. Measurements of the distortion of these fields caused by geological features are made with the aid of search coil detectors at several discrete frequencies. Many results of field surveys made with the method are presented and they illustrate its advantages and limitations when applied to the search for massive sulphide mineralization. The advantages far outweigh the limitations and in fact indicate that a major breakthrough in geophysical exploration technique and instrumentation has been made.

Conveyors constitute a critical artery, essential to the successful operation of most ore processing plants. Technological progress is permitting the recovery of metal from low grade ores which previously could not be worked economically. Significant in this progress are improved material handling techniques highlighted by the frequent and successful application of conveyors. From the standpoint of the plant manager the successful conveyors are those he never hears about. They continue to economically transport the loads applied to them, requiring only routine maintenance attention. When such conveyors are subjected to closer scrutiny you will find that they have been carefully selected and engineered to perform the required function under the anticipated conditions. Among the primary elements in a conveyor drive are the electrical motor and the speed reducer. The selection of these elements can be aided by the systematic consideration of several factors. These factors which focus attention on the critical operating conditions, will be individually evaluated and their effect upon the selection of the electrical drive system and speed reducer analyzed.

In the early operations of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company, which extended from 1914 to 1926, the ore as mined contained principally sulphide copper minerals, manly chalcocite (Cu2S), This ore was milled in a 20,000-ton concentrator and the copper was recovered as a flotation concentrate which, was smelted at the nearby plant of the I ternational Smelting and Refining Company. In those days no attempt was made torecovercopper from any oxide minerals present. As mining operations progressed it soon became evident that the proportion of oxide minerals present would steadily increase, and. it was realized that some method of treatment would have to be developed whereby copper could' be recovered from both oxide and. sulphide minerals contained in the ore. A research program was instituted and after some years of experimental and, pilot plant work a new hydro-metallurgical process was developed whereby it became possible to extract copper from both the oxide and. sulphide minerals in a single leaching operation. The solvent adopted consisted of a mixture of sulphuric acid and ferric sulphate,' Following dissolution, the dissolved copper would be recovered by electrolysis. Also in the process of electrolyzing, spent solutions of sulphuric acid, H2SO4, and. ferric sulphate, Fe2(SOk)3, would be regeneratede and. somade available for continuous reuse. The process appeared to be a success and the decision was made to build a full-sized leaching plant for the future treatment of I spiration mixed ore. Construction was started and the leaching plant was completed in 1926, With the start of ferric-sulphate leaching the Inspiration Concentrator was shut down and, with the exception of a few short time runs has not operated since that time. The ferric sulphate leaching process served. Inspiration well for some 30 years and during that time won a name for itself as a classic example of hydro-metallurgical treatment of mixed sulphide oxide ores. Originally the plant was designed. to process some 7,500 tons per day of a mixed ore containing about 1,2% copper, of which 60% was present as oxide and. 40% as sulphide, Down through the years various improvements were made for the purpose of increasing plant capacity and as well to change the limiting 'factor of sulphide-oxide ratio, The final result was a leaching capacity of 9,600 tons per day when treating a 1% copper ore with a reversal of the sulphide-oxide ratio to 60% sulphide and 40% oxide.

FORMAL theories of yielding and flow have been developed to describe thermally activated plastic flow in metal crystals.'-" hey are all based on Becker's' original idea that thermal fluctuations aid the applied stress in overcoming internal barriers to flow and lead to the following relation. where j is the strain rate; C is a constant which includes a frequency factor, the entropy, the number of flow units, and the amount of strain associated with each successful fluctuation; E(T) is the activation energy associated with flow, and is a decreasing function of the applied stress, 7; k is Boltzmann's constant; and T is the temperature in OK. The various theories differ mainly in the model chosen and in the nature of the relationship between the applied stress and the activation energy. Beckerl and Orowan' suggest a relationship of the form E a(Ti — t)2, where .ri represents the stress required for flow without the aid of thermal fluctuations; Kauzmann,3 Cottrel1,5 and Seeger6,7 suggest E a(t — t) ; Fisher8 suggests E while Cottrell and Bilby4 suggest a more complex relationship between E and 7. Additional data are needed to test these various theories., esweciallv- in view of Dorn's9 ork. which indicates that the activation energy for creep is independent of the stress and strain. The present paper presents the stress-strain data derived from incremental loading of magnesium single crystals in tension and direct shear, in the temperature range of 78" to 364°K. Incremental loading was employed in order that the creep component of the strain could be determined. Stress-strain curves of aluminum10-13 and copper" single crvstals. derived from incremental loading tests, have been found to be in agreement with those obtained by the more conventional constant strain rate or loading rate tests. THE A1-Mg phase diagram in the composition range from 30 to 60 pct Mg remains uncertain. Four intermetallic compounds are reported in this composition range. All of the published diagrams are in agreement as to the existence of intermediate phases near 37 and 52 pct Mg (Mgl,A1,). Confusion exists, however, as to the number and identity of the intermetallic phases present in the intervening composition range from 37 to 52 pct Mg. Mikheeva and Kurnakovl denote the existence of a phase e near 42 pct Mg. Kawakami," Reiderer? and Laves report a phase near 48 pct Mg. Eickhoff and Vosskuhler, from a critical survey of the literature, composed the diagram shown in Fig. 1, with the exception of the eutectoid horizontal of the e-phase shown at 210°C. RaynorV n a similar survey discounts the existence of the phase proposed by Ka-wakami et al.' at 48 pct Mg and reports a composite diagram similar to that of Eickhoff and Vosskuhler." This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coals in Dickenson County, Va. It is one in a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for the production of metallurgical coke either as mined or after beneficiation. Nearly 4 million tons of coal was produced in Dickenson County in 1955, of which approximately 2.7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 5 cleaning plants. The Federal Geological Survey has estimated that nearly 1,300 million tons of measured and indicated coal reserves remained in the county as of January 1, 1951.

among uranium alloy systems are the U-Zr, U-Ti,and U-Mo binary systems, in that an intermediate phase, of limited solubility range, exists in each system. These intermediate phase alloys offer a promising field of investigation, both as binary alloys and as ternary alloy combinations. While a limited amount of work has been done on the binary alloys, none has been done on ternary combinations of these alloys. As a possible prelude to more intensive investigation of these systems, a study of the phase relationships between the 6 phases of the U-Zr and U-Ti systems was undertaken. The solid-state portions of the binary constitutional diagrams for the U-Ti,1 Zr-Ti,2 and U-Zr3 systems are shown in Fig. 1. The solid to liquid transformations are not shown, as these transformations were not studied in the ternary system. The phase designations employed are based upon those shown in the uranium constitutional diagrams. The crystal structures of the various phases are given in Table I. Experimental Materials and Methods The ternary section presented is based upon the results of thermal, metallographic, and X-ray analyses of a series of alloys ranging in composition between the phases of the U-Zr and U-Ti systems (U-74 atomic pct Zr to U-35 atomic pct Ti). After preparation of the alloys, thermal data were obtained. On the basis of these data, specimens were heat treated and examined metallographically. Specimens were then selected from those heat treated for X-ray determination of the phases present in what were considered critical phase regions. Alloy and Specimen Preparation—Alloys for this investigation were prepared from selected as-reduced uranium and crystal-bar zirconium and titanium. For nominal compositions, see Table 11. Charges were arc melted from five to seven times under a helium atmosphere, finally being cast into wire-bar form for fabrication. A zirconium getter button was used to clean the furnace atmosphere prior to melting. The alloys were homogenized 20 hr at 900 °C and furnace cooled. A portion of each bar was then removed for thermal analysis; the remainder was saved for fabrication. Alloys 8 through 14 were placed in steel tubes along with zirconium getter chips and, after flushing with argon, the tubes were welded shut and rolled at 1500 °F to a 50 pct reduction in diam. The remaining alloys were annealed 24 hr at ll00°F to insure transformation of the ? phase to the 8-U2Ti phase and were then hot rolled from a salt bath. Attempts to roll alloys 6 and 7 at 1100 °F were unsuccessful. Following this, attempts were made to roll pieces of alloys 1 through 5, which had cracked rather severely during casting, at 1200 °F, but these efforts were also unsuccessful. These alloys were, therefore, further treated in their cast and homogenized condition. All alloys were pickled to remove oxide formed during rolling. Thermal data were obtained on these alloys by conventional differential thermal analysis at a heating rate of 30C per min, and by a high-speed heating method at rates of approximately 10°C per sec. IN solid solutions atoms of differing sizes occupy the same crystalline lattice, requiring that some of them be compressed and others expanded. The energy involved has been called misfit strain energy and is an important concept of crystal chemistry. If the atomic sizes and elastic constants of interatomic bonds are known, the misfit energy may be calculated,' provided certain simplifying assumptions are allowable. Usually, isotropic crystals are assumed and interatomic distances are taken to be the statistical average determined from X-ray diffraction. Such calculations yield values of the misfit energy of the order of 1 or 2 kcal per atom in alloys such as Au-Cu at compositions of 50 atomic pct. However, evidence has accumulated in recent times that atoms change their sizes with composition of alloys, implying electronic rearrangement of the bonds. The size changes have been found particularly by application of the X-ray method developed by Warren, Averbach, and Roberts.' Thus, Averbach, Flinn, and Cohen3 determined radii in Au-Cu alloys. Oriani4 showed that these new radii led to a calculated misfit energy in disordered AuCu, which was decreased from the values calculated by the usual theory more than twenty-fold, to only 80 cal per g atom. Thermodynamic calculations from the phase diagram5 also show misfit energy to be no more than a few hundred calories per g atom in this alloy. The question of what electronic rearrangements are possible therefore becomes compelling in estimating misfit energy. In the following pages the results of certain calculations on the AuCu tetragonal superlattice are submitted. Conclusions drawn from these should be applicable in large degree to disordered solid solutions. As in all ordered states, bonding distances in the superlattice are individually known, rather than being merely average distances as found from lattice constants of disordered states. Moreover, only the Au-Au and Cu-Cu distances are strained; the elastic constants of these are known in the elementary state. In the usual calculation it is necessary to assume elastic constants for Au-Cu bonds. Misfit energy has thus been calculable without the need of many simplifying assumptions usually made. It is still assumed that equilibrium bond lengths and elastic properties of the bonds are the same in the alloy as in the pure metals. As previously discussed, this is probably not correct. Also assumed is that the bonds are not affected by strain of neighboring bonds. A calculation of Young's modulus from compressibility data shows this to be far from true; extensive electronic rearrangements take place. It would seem that misfit energy cannot be calculated from elasticity data for the elements. The usual methods may, however, give an upper limit which is often much higher than the true value. The question of electronic rearrangement is, of course, a complex one. Pauling's theory gives a simple, approximate treatment of the relation between type of bond and bond distance. This has been applied with some success to the Au-Cu system, as will be shown in a later section. Misfit Energy in Au-Cu Alloys Hume-Rothery and Raynor6 discuss the Au-CU system as a type example of strain energy. The gold atom is 12.8 pct larger in diameter than the copper atom, near the size factor limit beyond which solid solubility is severely restricted. They therefore consider the misfit energy to be large, a conclusion for which they believe they find evidence in the phase diagram. Gold and copper are completely miscible in the solid state, but the alloy has a minimum melting point at an intermediate composition. From this Hume-Rothery and Raynor conclude that the strain energy is nearly large enough to prevent miscibility; the phase diagram tends toward a eutec-tic type. In Ag-Cu, which has almost identical size relationships, solid miscibility is quite limited; whereas in Au-Ag, where atomic sizes are nearly the same, there is complete miscibility without a minimum in the melting point. From their arguments the heat of formation of Au-Cu would be expected to be endothermic or only slightly exothermic, that of Ag-Cu to be endothermic, and that of Au-Ag to be exothermic. Deviations, from Ve-gard's law of additivity of atomic radii support these conclusions, since Au-Cu and Ag-Cu both have pronounced positive deviations, and Au-Ag has a negative deviation. Nevertheless, Au-Cu alloys form exothermically; indeed, considerably more exothermically than Au-Ag, Table I. Hence, strain energy must be much less important in this case than Hume-Rothery and Raynor have supposed.

At the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., reports are prepared from time to time on results of washability studies of coal from important beds in the Southern Appalachian region. The investigations that provide the material for these reports are made by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the mine operators. The principal objective of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data to aid in determining the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's reserves, particularly of coking coals. Such information is also important from the standpoint of conservation, because it facilitates the selection of preparation methods that will yield an acceptable product with a minimum loss of coal to the rejects.

FERRITES are sintered metallic oxides of the spinel structure type1 and belong to the class of soft ferromagnetic materials. Similar to a ceramic, they can be formed and fired to a dense body, exhibiting a high electrical volume resistivity ranging from 10 90 10' ohm-cm as compared with 10-6 hm-cm for some of the metallic magnetic materials. This high resistivity, with resulting low eddy current losses, finds special application at high frequencies. The dispersive susceptibility of ferrites at microwave frequencies has also led to many applications in this field. Where high resistivity with high permeability is desirable, ferrites are used in low frequency applications. During the last few years ferrites exhibiting rectangular hysteresis loops have been developed for computer and magnetic memory systems. The general formula for ferrites is MeFe2O4 where Me is a divalent metal ion such as Ni, Zn, Mg, Mn, Cu, Cd, and Fe. Only two of these ferrites are nonferromagnetic, namely, those with Zn and Cd. Solid solutions can be formed between different ferrites, and it is of interest to note that solid solutions of a ferromagnetic ferrite with a nonferromagnetic ferrite yield much better magnetic materials than the basic ferrite body. In general, it can be said that the solid solution formation between ferrites has widened the field of ferrite synthesis and has led to methods of preparing materials with a large variety of magnetic properties. During the last two decades the synthesis of ferromagnetic oxides has been the object of extensive research, but commercial production has been started only within the last ten years. Along with more fundamental studies, there remains the never- ending task of developing ways to realize the optimum characteristics of materials in large-scale production. Ordinarily, to produce a ferrite material it is necessary for the constituent oxides to be mixed intimately, pressed, and then fired at temperatures above 1000°C. Ferrite Synthesis: Formation of a basic ferrite by solid state reaction from Fe,O, and a monoxide such as NiO, under normal atmospheric conditions, is governed by a progressive diffusion of cations between adjacent particles of the constituents. Firing temperature, furnace atmosphere, and cooling can vary the magnetic properties, however. If, for example, a dioxide, a sesquioxide, or an oxide of the Me0 type is substituted for the monoxide, the reaction mechanism becomes more complex and extremely dependent on atmospheric conditions and firing cycles. Before going into this subject, I would very much like to call to your attention some past history on patents granted by the United States Patent office that involved ammonium nitrate. On February 10, 1885, a patent was granted to Russell S. Penniman. "The object of this invention is to securely protect ammonium nitrate against deliquescent and to maintain it in substantially its normal disintegrated condition, so as to afford a new product suited for ready use in the manufacture of high explosives, and enable the immediate admixture thereof with any of the well known explosive substances or compounds heretofore employed. 'Whether the nitrate be thus granulated or otherwise reduced to a granular or divided condition, it is then thoroughly mixed with about twelve (12) percent of the fluid or semi-fluid carbonaceous protecting medium, which forms a readily applied jacket or coating for the granules of nitrate and also serves as a carbonaceous element in such explosive compounds as it may thereafter be employed in."

MOTT and Hainesl have summarized the available techniques for the examination of aluminum and some anisotropic metals under polarized light. Many of these techniques are rather complicated and cumbersome. This note presents a simplified procedure for using polarized light to obtain information about the crystallographic orientation of any particular grain in a magnesium alloy. Since other hexagonal metals are more anisotropic than magnesium, similar methods might well be applied to them. Ernst and Laves2 produced a double-refracting layer on magnesium alloy specimens by SuCCeSSiVe etches in solutions of perchloric acid in alcohol, magnesium perchlorate in perchloric acid and alcohol, and calcium and magnesium carbonates in water. They examined their specimens under polarized light and were able to determine the direction of the hexagonal axis in any particular grain from a measurement of the extinction behavior of that grain. The disadvantages of their technique were the complexity of the etching procedure and the explosive hazard of the perchloric acid-alcohol solutions. Results equivalent to those of Ernst and Laves were obtained in this investigation after etching specimens for 6 to 8 sec in an acetic picral solution containing 100 parts 6 pct picral, 10 parts distilled water and. 5 parts acetic acid. General Industral Minerals - Penn Top South The silica industry is relatively small and in general is made up of small plants located near the consumer. In the United States there are approximately 155 established operating plants located in 37 states, extending from coast to coast. Silica, in varying degrees of chemical purity, enjoys a very diversified market. Silica is the basic ingredient of glass, bothcontainer and flat glass, and is used for grinding and polishing of flat glass up to the final polishing stages where rouge is generally used. Silica is used for foundry molds and cores, sandblasting, stone cutting, refractories, placing sand in furances, glass coatings and linings, laboratory glassware, construction, oil well fracturing for increased oil flow, filtering purposes, silicate of soda, silicon carbide, and others.

KYANITE schists in the Sudbury area have been generally described by Haw,1 who has also given particular information on preliminary treatment of three large samples from Dryden township, Ontario.2 Kyanite, garnet, biotite, quartz, and feldspar comprise the main ingredients of this ore. Kyanite is the valuable mineral. About 5 ½ tons of -35 +200 mesh product, made by dry rod milling, screening, and separation on the Exolon magnetic separator, were available for treatment by flotation. Magnetic separation had effectively reduced garnet and biotite so that flotation feed consisted essentially of kyanite, quartz, and feldspar, the kyanite content averaging 32 pct and representing about 86 pct of the kyanite in the original ore.
