In order to appreciate fully the place of palaeontology within the general framework of the geological sciences, consideration must be given to the time, about 150 years ago, just before the study of fossils was beginning to be applied to geological problems. At theend of the eighteenth century, almost all geologists recognised that fossils were the remains of animals and plants that had lived at the time when the rocks in which they occur were formed. It was also realized that many-some geologists thought all-rocks hadbeen formed under water, but as regards the order of succession in which these rocks had originated, and the relative ages of rocks found in different parts of the world or even of one country, only the haziest and most contradictory ideas existed.Around the turn from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, a widely taught system of theories was that of the German professor, Abraham Gottlob Werner, who believed that the surface of the earth had once been covered by a universal ocean at whose bottom all rocks had been deposited. As the level of this ocean gradually subsided, older rocks-so Werner taught-are now generally found in the mountains or at great depth below the younger rocks; this was his "Primitive Division" which included granite, gneiss, schists, slates, basalt, porphyry and other igneous and metamorphic rocks, all of which he believed to be of sedimentary origin. Younger rocks, according to Werner, were formed at successively lower levels as the water receded. Next in age he placed a "Transition System" of limestones and greywackes; still younger the so-called "Floetz Division," which included sandstone, limestone, gypsum, salt, coal, but also some basalt, porphyry and other rocks; youngest were the alluvial deposits of recent clays, loams, sands and gravel. Thus, in the Wernerian system the age of a rock was determined on the basis of its petrographic properties and the height of its occurrence relative to sea-level.Here and there these ideas survived well into the nineteenth century. As late as 1825, Charles Darwin listened to lectures by Professor Jamieson, one of the last proponents of Wernerian theories in England. The fact that entirely different kinds of fossils occurredin rocks which were regarded as contemporaneous did not worry the theoreticians.It is, therefore, noteworthy and significant that the value of fossils for the interpretation of geological events was demonstrated to the geologists by an engineer and surveyor, WiIIiam Smith, who, although no professional geologist, has often been called the "Father of English Geology." His professional work, which was mainly concerned with drainage and irrigation projects, took Smith to all parts of England, where he sometimes journeyed as much as 10,000 miles in 11 year. Smith was a keen observer and, unhampered by theoretical speculations, he noted the occurrence of fossils and collected specimens wherever he went. Before long he realized that the same kind of fossils followed each other in successive layers of rocks in much the same way in different parts of England, and soon he was able, by looking at fossils collected by other people, to tell from what...

An experimental investigation was conducted upon five different paired samples of oil and gas from a field in Louisiana. The study, with each pair of samples, included the measurement of the formation volume and the volume of the liquid phase for three mixtures of the oil and gas. The gas-oil ratio varied from approximately 200 to over 40,000 cu ft per bbl and measurements were made at temperatures between 40" and 250°F. The gravity of the tank oil for the five samples under investigation varied between 38.0" and 55.8" API. The composition of the oil and gas samples and their mixtures is submitted 'References given at end of paper. A number of diagrams depicting the effect of temperature and gas-oil ratio upon retrograde dew-point pressure are presented. INTRODUCTION During the past two decades a fairly large number of investigations were made of the volumetric behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures. The earlier work of Beecher and Park-hurst' and a more recent report on samples from Dominguez Field2 are typical of research of this nature. Such studies have been used in estimating the volumetric behavior of fluids in producing fields other than those from which samples were taken. Progress has been made3.4.5 in correlating the influence of pressure, temperature, and composition upon the specific and formation volume of hydrocarbon mixtures of relatively low gas-oil ratios, but attempts to extend this correlation to higher ratios have not been particularly successful. The influence of composition upon the volumetric behavior of such systems cannot be simply related to a single parameter such as gas-oil ratio. In order to aid in the extension of the correlation of the volumetric behavior of mixtures of oil and gas to higher ratios, a rather complete study was made of five different pairs of samples from a Louisiana field. The complexity of the influence of composition upon the volumetric and phase behavior of such systems in the regions of retrograde condensation was indicated by earlier Work,6,7,8,9,10 and it is doubtful if simple correlations can be established in these regions with the information currently available. Inhomogeneous yielding during the early stages of plastic flow has been observed in many metals and has long been a subject of controversy. Low carbon steel, when strained at room temperature, exhibits a distinct yield point at which the metal ceases to behave elastically and begins to flow plastically without further increase in stress,† often with an actual decrease in stress from that existing at the yield point. One manifestation of this behavior is the familiar Lüders lines. The extent of the yield point elongation (the plastic strain which results without raising the stress above that at the initial yield point) may be several percent. Several explanations of this type of yielding in steels have appeared in the literature:1-3}; 1. The segregation of carbides or other constituents at the grain boundaries of ferrite forms cell-like blocks which break down at a higher stress than that at which the ferrite alone will flow. 2. The precipitation of various constituents within the ferrite itself in some way blocks initial flow until a higher stress is reached, after which a great deal of flow occurs without further increase in stress. 3. The restraining influence of neighboring, less favorably oriented grains in a polycrystal results in a storing up of energy, which on yielding is sufficient to cause the continued propagation of slip bands on the multiplicity of slip systems available in adjacent iron crystals without increase in stress. 4. Local segregation of carbon atoms increases the stress required for the initial propagation of dislocations. The stress required for further deformation is lower.3 Such an explanation would require the presence of upper and lower yield points in single crystals. Low and Gensamer2 have shown that heterogeneous yielding can be eliminated by removal of carbon and nitrogen from polycrystalline steels by wet-hydrogen treatment. They also demonstrated that the re-introduction of minute amounts of carbon or nitrogen caused a return of the yield point. Observations of the initial flow of single crystals containing small amounts of carbon and nitrogen- should provide a clue to the explanation of inhomogeneous yielding. Previous tests of iron crystals4-6 can not be considered conclusive because it is uncertain whether the carbon and nitrogen were satisfactorily removed by the decarburization technique employed. The purpose of the experiments described herein was to determine whether single iron crystals containing either carbon or nitrogen would exhibit in-homogeneous yielding. Experimental Procedures THE PREPARATION OF SINGLE CRYSTALS All crvstals were formed in the following way. Aluminum killed sheet material 80 mils thick was machined into specimens of the outer contour shown in Fig 1. These mildly tapered specimens were decarburized at 730°C for 16 hr in hydrogen that had been bubbled rapidly through water maintained at 70°. This paper deals chiefly with the preliminary examination, when a decision has to be made as to whether a prospect has a chance of developing into a mine or not. At this stage it is important to have a fairly clear conception of what is expected of the prospect, andjust what type of mine is sought. Much money can be wasted testing a prospect suitable for a prospector or small syndicate, but which never looked like becoming a mine of sufficient size to interest a company. When undertaking an inspection, therefore, it is necessary to have a broad outline, at least, of the policy of the principals for whom the report is intended.At this early stage it is frequently necessary to form an opinion of the prospects of a property on very meagre data. When new to this type of work one's first reaction is often th~t it is impossible to pass an opinion on the data available. It. is absolutely necessary,however, that an opinion of the possibilities and chances of favourable development be given; The report should strive to convey this information, making quite ::lear the risk involved, how complete are the data on which this opinion is based, and the possible magnitude of the prize. A Preliminary report has to state whether a property has sufficient prospects to warrant testing.The following procedure is suggested in order to make best use of the data and minimise hasty conclusions influenced by preconceived ideas-an ever-present danger.Examination.The first stage is the examination. This should aim at collecting all available significant data, but avoid clouding the issue with detail which, at this stage, will not affect the decision. The following points are considered to be the main ones for which to look:-Geological Environment.As good a working knowledge as possible'of the geology of the area should be obtained. Government Geological Survey reports and maps, if available, will be a big help. A detailed knowledge of the regional geology is not necessary a,t this stage, but a broad outline of the geological setting of the prospect under review, and also of any other important mines in the district, is often helpful in the final decision.The Nature of the Ore-Body.Any facts concerning the nature or occurrence of the lode should be noted as, coupled with experience of similar bodies, they affect the ultimate decision.Structural Control.This is probably the most important factor, in the light of present geological knowledge. Its chief importance is due to two facts:-(a) Structure plays one of the prime parts in ore deposition.(b) Geological knowledge, of structure is somewhat in advance of knowledge of other factors influencing ore deposition.

Improvements in the X-ray method of measuring liquid saturation and saturation distribution are presented. Two identical direct current amplifiers have been added to measure continuously the intensities of the X-ray tube output and the beam which has passed through the core under test. The ratio of these intensities is automatically recorded on a modified Brown Electronik Recorder. Arrangements have been made to drive the core automatically and in synchronism with the recorder chart so as to give a continuous curve showing the variation of liquid saturation along the length of the core. By determining the ratio of the two X-ray beam intensities simultaneously the measurements are made essentially independent of small fluctuation in voltage and current supplied to the tube. This improved technique has been used for investigating the fluid distribution along the length of cores and core assemblies when one fluid is displaced by another. Typical results of these studies are shown. INTRODUCTION In a previous publication' a method was described for measuring the oil saturation in cores which was based on the absorption of X-rays by the fluid content of the core. While that technique is capable of yielding accurate results, the original apparatus was not especially convenient for determining the fluid distribution along the length of a core. This was primarily due to the slow response of the amplifier and galvanometer and the necessity of making a point by point survey of the material under investigation. It was, therefore, not only possible for sections of the core having a variable or unusual saturation distribution to escape observation entirely, but changes in output of the X-ray generator between readings on the unknown and the monitor introduced errors in the measurements that could be avoided only by further stabilization of the source or by taking a large number of readings. This paper describes a method and apparatus for recording continuously and automatically the intensity of the X-ray beam that is transmitted by a core. The variation of saturation with time at a given section of the core may thus be found, or by scanning the core by driving it in synchronism with the recorder the saturation distribution may readily be determined. As indicated in the previous paper, the X-ray method possesses an advantage over the weighing technique in relative permeability experimentation in that the core need not be removed from the holder for the purpose of making a saturation measurement. Furthermore, the actual distribution of fluid and the effects upon that distribution of inflow and outflow heads may be investigated. And errors due to gas bubbles or loss of liquid that are frequently sources of error in volumetric methods of saturation determination are avoided. PRINCIPLE OF THE METHOD The energy in an X-ray beam that has passed through an absorbing material is expressed by the well known formula: E = E0, e-cd (1) where E, is the energy in the incident beam, µ the mass absorption coefficient, c the density or concentration of absorbing material, and d is the length of path of the beam in the absorber. The coefficient µ varies with the wavelength of the radiation as well as with the absorbing material. The output of an X-ray tube varies in an approximately linear manner with the tube current, but to the second or higher power of the anode voltage. Moreover, the quality or wavelength distribution of the radiation varies with the voltage.

0. R. LYONS*—I know that we are all interested in hearing about problems that other people have. To most of the people from the eastern part of the United States, this kind of coal preparation is completely different. It represents washing difficulties that most operators have never experienced, or, if they have, they have refused to consider them because there are coals that are much easier to wash and, therefore. they leave the more difficult ones alone for the time being. E. R. McMILLAN†—I think the au-thors have summarized the material very well. Dr. Yancey has spent a great many years in the study of washing coals, as has Mr. Geer. I might comment briefly on some of the plants that were mentioned, plants with which I have had some con-nection, particularly those of our own company, the Northwestern Improve-ment Co. I would like to point out this: that ill each case, a great deal of work was done in the way of preliminary studies of washability of the coal before plants were built. The first plant of any size built in Roslyn field was mentioned in the paper. This central cleaning plant was designed and built to handle coal from three different mines. I might say that prior to 1935, the year in which the plant was built, the coal was used largely as railway fuel, close to a million tons annually. But as mining increased in depth, it became increasingly difficult to separate and gob much of the impurities underground, with the result that the run-of-mine coal became so high in ash that the railroad eventually was forced to consider installing some kind of preparation plant at the mine. We spent about a year in preliminary studies in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines to find out the best type of plant that would clean the coal. The result, as Mr. Geer has explained to you, is a rather complicated plant, but it is doing a very satisfactory job. We have, however, made a number of changes and improve-n~euts since it was first built. The last addition was the, installation of a cen- trifugal drier to dewater the minus ¼ in. size. We are now contemplating installing heat driers for further drying of minus ¼ in. We use Vissac heat driers for drying the stoker coal, the ¾ to in. The demand for drier coal, for both railway and industrial use, is forcing us to further drying of the coal. The plant that was mentioned as having been built in Pierce County, during the war, was a government sponsored plant. I happen to have had some connection with its design, construction and initial operation. We did what we thought then, and still think, was a very thorough job of preliminary studies in cooperation with the Burea of Mines of the coal from that field. The plant was as good a plant as could be built with the equipment available at that time, 1943. The plant that was mentioned as having been built at Ravensdale for treating the McKay coal was rebuilt about two years ago, and in addition to the modified Elmore jig washer that was mentioned. we added a coucentrating table for re-cleaning the minus 3/32 in. The results of two sets of displacement experiments are reported. In the first set of experiments various solutions of sugar in water were displaced by other solutions of sugar in water. In the second set oils were displaced by water. Each set of experiments was performed on a linear system made of cemented silica sand grains. These displacement tests were made to evaluate the behavior when the ratio of fluid viscosities between the displacing and displaced phases was varied. A further consequence of the test results is a comparison between displacement behavior when the displaced and displacing phases are miscible as with sugar solutions and when they are immiscible as with oil and water. INTRODUCTION Buckley and Leverett1 have presented a theory for the displacement of oil by gas or water based upon the relative permeability concept. This theory presents the displacement of oil as occurring in two phases, an initial or primary phase preceding the breakthrough of the displacing phase and a subordinate or secondary phase during which both oil and the displacing phase flow simultaneously through the same porous section. These authors gave the results of calculations to show that the percentage of oil displaced during the primary phase by water drive would be dependent upon the ratio of the viscosity of the oil to that of the water. No experimental evidence was reported by these authors to substantiate their theory. Qualitatively, however, it has been found to be in agreement with many observed field results. Laboratory investigators have been in general agreement in reporting for air or gas drive2,3 a small primary phase of production and a large secondary phase. "INTRODUCTION Experience and research have shown that an effective way to reduce structural damage from explosions is to provide adequate pressure-relief vents in the walls of equipment and buildings within which explosions might occur. In general, free or unrestricted openings represent the most efficient type of vent. However, in many manufacturing operations it is impractical to use free vents, and it becomes necessary to cover the openings with diaphragms or blow-out disks, hinged panels, or other devices, in order to give protection against weather changes, to prevent the efflux of dusts or vapors from equipment during normal operations, or for other reasons.A few data on the pressure-relieving capacities of hinged panels and a paper diaphragm were published in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3924,4/ which covered the first phase of the dust-explosion venting study made by the Bureau. The present report describes recent experiments that were made to determine the relative effectiveness of an unrestricted vent and 22 types of closures, including various paper, cloth, and metal-foil diaphragms, hinged doors or panels, and several kinds of scored and unscored glass panes.The tests showed that many of the vent closures were effective in releasing the explosions rapidly during their incipient stage, so that the development of destructive pressures was prevented. Vents of this type should prove useful in safeguarding industrial equipment from severe explosion damage. The experiments disclosed that the venting capacities of the diaphragms are approximately inversely proportional to their static bursting strengths."

Oxygen enriched air is being used quite extensively in the metallurgical plants of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada, Limited, at Trail, B.C. The oxygen used for this purpose is a by-product from the Company's chemical plants located in the area. Most of the ore treated in the Trail metallurgical plants comes from Com-inco's Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, B.C. At Kimberley the ore is milled to produce lead and zinc concentrates which are shipped to Trail for further treatment to metal. One section of this paper deals with the use of oxygen enriched air in the suspension roasting of the zinc concentrates. In this process the concentrate is calcined for leaching preparatory to electrolytic recovery of the zinc. A second section of the paper describes the use of oxygen enriched air in operations at the lead smelter. There oxygen enriched air is used in the blast to the lead blast furnaces and in the slag fuming furnace which recovers the lead and zinc contained in lead blast furnace slag. The final section of the paper outlines the precautions necessary for the safe use of oxygen enriched air in any plant operation. The Use of Oxygen Enriched Air in the Suspension Zinc Roasters The suspension roasting of zinc concentrate developed at Trail, B.C., has been described in AIME Vol. 121, "The Electrolytic Zinc Plant of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited" by B. A. Stimmel, W. 11. Hannay and K. D. McBean. Since the publication of that paper, the use of oxygen enriched air in suspension roasting has been introduced as regular practice with marked advantage. The relative importance of a specific advantage may vary with changing conditions, but, in general, it may be stated that improved operation has been achieved at increased capacities. Suspension roasting is carried out at Trail in converted standard 25 ft diam Wedge roasters. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th roasting hearths have been removed and the drying hearth covered over. Drying of the concentrate is done on the drying hearth and the 1st roasting hearth. The dried concentrate, after any lump's have been broken up in a ball mill, is fed to a single burner located in the upper part of the combustion chamber. Oxygen is introduced at the burner fan along with the gases from drying, returned combustion gases from the waste heat boiler outlet and the required amount of new air. Up to 60 pct of the concentrate settles out on the 6th roasting hearth, the rest passilig out of the roaster. The product collected in the waste heat boiler is finished calcine, but the dust collected in the cyclones after the boilers is returned to the base of the combustion chamber where the sulphate is decomposed. Gases from the c'yclones go to a Cottrell precipitator. The discharges from the 7th roasting hearth and the waste heat boiler are combined with the Cottrell dust to give the finished calcine. Following small scale tests started in 1933, oxygen enriched air has been used continuously in the suspension roasting of zinc concentrate in Trail, beginning in 1937. A significant factor in promoting its use in this operation was the availability of by-product oxygen from the Company's near-by Chemical and Fertilizer Division. To-day it is standard practice at Trail to use oxygen enriched air for zinc concentrate roasting. The most important requirement in roasting a zinc concentrate for an electrolytic plant is that the zinc in the calcine should have maximum solubility. It is also desirable at Trail that the gas produced for the manufacture of suhhuric acid should have a ~naximum concentration of SO2 and that a substantial recovery of waste heat from the gas be achieved. High solubility of zinc requires that the sulphide sulphur and zinc ferrite in the calcine be kept low. These are both functions of temperature and time, with formation of zinc ferrite also dependent on contact between the iron and zinc particles. One of the inherent advantages of suspension roasting is that minimum time and contact are achieved. The limit on temperature is imposed by the fusion point of the concentrate and not by the need to control zinc ferrite formation. Operating temperatures are normally maintained within the limits of 1725" and 1850°F. A relatively low zinc sulphate in the calcine is required at Trail, and this results from discharging the calcine from the high sulphur dioxide atmosphere at a temperature above 1600°F.

In its investigation of deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines did some diamond drilling at the Almedia deposit In an endeavor to find an additional source of supply of lead and zinc. It is reported that in 1816, lead and zinc minerals were found in the limestone quarries near the boundary line between Scott and Center townships. In an attempt to develop these minerals in paying quantities, an alit was driven for several rods into a bluff Just west of the present Almedia mine, This is believed to be the Web mine, mentioned briefly by Parker Cleaveland in 1816. In 1901 the Almedia mine was developed by an open cut and three shafts. The hoisting shaft at the time of drilling by the Bureau of Mines was sounded to a depth of 115 feet. A concentrating plant reportedly made shipments to Hamburg, Germany, for reduction. The deposit is in a somewhat slaty limestone. The ore occurs in a northeast fracture zone along the strike of the limestone and dips to the southeast. Old miners state that the ore appeared as large chunks of galena and sphalerite. In 1949, to investigate the downward extension of the oreshoot, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes aggregating 1,126.3 feet.

"Part I. - PrinciplesIntroductionIf the oxides of the metals are listed in decreasing order of the magnitude of their heats of formation, the list appearing in Table 1 will be formed. It will be apparent at once that this is essentially the well-known electrochemical series (Table li). The metals at the bottom of the list exhibit great stability and are attacked only by the most violent of chemical reagents. Higher on the list, the metals become more reactive until, at the head of the list, the metals lithium and calcium are unstable in moist air.The reactive metals to be considered lie above manganese. In this group will be found familiar and abundant metals such as aluminium and magnesium, the unfamiliar yet abundant metal titanium, the rare and mysterious metal beryllium, and others of greater or less interest.While these metals exhibit properties as unlike as those of uranium and magnesium, they have in common a specialized and difficult extractive metallurgy. They form compounds of great stability, and their reduction is to varying degrees difficult. The position of a metal in Table 1 (and more particu1arly its position in the free energy column) gives a numerical value to this property.Oxides with low free energies of formation may be reduced with great ease; thus silver and mercury may be produced from their oxides by simple heating in air.Lead, iron, and zinc may be separated from their oxides by heating with carbon to moderate temperatures. Magnesium oxide, on the other hand, .requires a high temperature and very special conditions before it will yield magnesium metal."

"IntroductionThe difficulties to be overcome in shaft sinking and development at depth are centred at McIntyre in and around No. 12 shaft. Generally they have been due to increasing pressures and temperatures and to changes in geological structure. This paper describes the difficulties and the measures taken to meet them.No. 12 ShaftEarly in 1932 McIntyre decided to sink an internal shaft from the deepest level, the 3875, to explore and develop known veins extending below that horizon. The location selected was a point 1,500 feet south and 1,000 feet east of No. 11 shaft, the main operating shaft through which the men, ore, and most of the materials are handled Shaft and auxiliary equipment we1e laid out for 3,000 feet, that is to 7,000 feet below the surface. The shaft was to be capable of handling 1,500 tons of ore daily from the lowest level, and was to provide ventilation, compressed air, water, and electric power to service all levels.No. 12 is an internal, vertical shaft extending from the 3875 to the 6825 level and bottoming at 7,007 feet. It is a rectangular, four-compartment shaft, 21 ft. 9¾, in. by 6 ft. 3¾ in. outside the timber (Figure 1).There are two hoisting compartments and one airway compartment, each 4 ft. 10¾ in. by 5 ft. ¾ in. inside dimensions, and a combined manway, pipe, and cable compartment 4 ft. ¼ in. by 5 ft. ¾ in. Levels have been established at 150-foot intervals, pump stations and sumps at 1,000-foot intervals, and. there are two loading pockets, one at the 5525 and the other at the 6900 level.The shaft was sunk in two stages. The first stage, consisting of preparation above the 3875 level and sinking to 5585 feet, was completed by March 31st, 1935. The second stage of deepening the shaft from 5,585 to 7,007 feet was started August lst, 1946, and completed three years later."

In May l942, the Bureau of Mines started exploring for manganese on the Black Poch manganese property, Esmeralda County, Nev., to determine possible reserves of manganese in the deposits. The work was done by the Bureau in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey and comprised a study of the geology, mapping the area, and exploring by trenching, test pitting, and sampling. All ore bodies were examined and sampled, and the three most important areas were explored by trenching and test pitting. This report notes the location, ownership, and history of the deposits; explains the physical features of the district; mentions briefly mine workings and metallurgy; and describes the geology and ore bodies. The Bureau erected a temporary camp, repaired 5 miles of temporary road, constructed 1,000 feet of new road, dug 3,173 foot of trenches with a vertical crone section of 4 x 10 feet and 91 test pits with a cross section 3 x 6 feet, averaging about 6 feet deep, and cut 134 samples.

Introduction The Helen mine and the Victoria mine of Algoma Ore Properties, Limited, in the Michipicoten district, Ontario, are 120 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie, on the north shore of lake Superior. They are on the Algoma Central railway between Hawk Junction and Michipicoten Harbour. Between them, these mines have produced 10,757,113 tons of iron ore. From 1900 to 1918, 2,823,369 gross tons of brown ore was shipped, and from 1939 to the end of 1949, 7,933,744 tons of siderite was produced from the open-pit operations and underground development. The finished product, known as 'Algoma sinter', is shipped to blast furnaces both in Canada and the United States. The iron-ore bodies are a part of a tabular shaped area of iron formation that extends over a length of more than 10,000 feet and has maximum width of 1,000 feet. The two siderite orebodies, known as the Helen and Victoria, are separated by two diabase dykes. The Helen orebody is 1,600 feet long with a maximum width of 250 feet and the Victoria is 1,200 feet long with a width comparable to the Helen. These orebodies are considered to be a replacement of the original rock by iron carbonate. The introduction of the iron-1bearing material probably occurred after the development of the major folded structures. The open-pit mining of siderite started in the Helen ore body in 1939 and continued until 1945. During this period, 3,853,395 tons of ore was mined. Open-pit mining started in the Victoria body in 1946 and is still being carried on. Underground development commenced in September, 1947. Diamond drilling and surface sampling had shown the Helen deposit to average 35.61 per cent Fe and 7.28 per cent SiO2, and the Vi.otoria deposit 33.73 per cent Fe and 10347 per cent SiO2?

E. R. JETTE*—The way this ternary was developed there are two directly determined points on each of the iso-thermals except the 700° isothermal, where I believe there is only one. How were the end points determined, and what was the basis for it? Whose work formed the basis for the silver copper line ? M. B. BEVER †—At most temperatures the authors determined three points of the isothermal line. For example it can be seen from Fig 3 and 4 how three points for the 600°C contour line were obtained. The authors took two additional points for each temperature from the copper-silver binary diagram contained in Hansen's volume on constitution diagrams. It is correct that the 700°C contour line is based only on one point in the ternary field which was found by a slight extrapolation of Fig 4. R. I. JAFFEE*—Are the tie lines representing phases in equilibrium parallel to the silver-copper boundary ? M. B. BEVER—Are you asking that as a matter of principle ? R. I. JAFFEE—I assumed that would follow from principle. I wonder if that is in accordance with the authors' ideas too. M. B. BEVER—I do not believe the authors obtained any information on the tie lines in the two-phase field. Of course, in the limiting case of very low gold contents the tie-lines approach to the silver-copper boundary, but generally in the two-phase field I do not think that the tie-lines have to be parallel to the boundary. E. R. JETTE—1 am quite sure they do not have to be parallel. You cannot tell from this work in which direction they go. E. A. There is need for an adequate working hypothesis that would describe at least qualitatively the crystallographic mechanism for the transformation from austenite to martensite in steel. A general theory would not only be of great assistance in the correlation of existing data and in planning future experimentation, but would also form the basis for an eventual explanation of the property changes that accompany lattice transformations. The mechanism of martensite formation described in the following pages is the outcome of two new experimental determinations: (1) the accurate evaluation of the lattice relationship between austenite and individual crystals of martensite, and (2) the measurement and analysis of the change in position that a volume of austenite undergoes when it transforms into a crystal of martensite. For this latter study, the stereographic analysis of shear was employed; this method greatly simplifies the solution of lattice-shear problems, and some space is devoted to its description. Lattiice Relationships and Habits PREVIOUS WORK The lattice relationships between austenite and martensite in carbon steels have been studied by Kurdjurnow-and Sachs,' and by Wassermann;2 and in iron-nickel alloys by Nishiyama.3 Wassermann,2 and Mehl and Derge.4 The studies by Kurdjumow and Sachs and by Wassermann were made on single (austenite) crystals of quenched 1.4 pct carbon steel, and the results of these two independent studies agree closely with the postulated lattice relationships: (III)r||(0ll)a [101]r [111]a [1] Both Nishiyama and Wassermann worked with an alloy of iron plus 30 pct nickel (all austenite at room temperature), and "martensitic alpha" was formed by cooling in liquid air. They agree that the lattice relationships for these conditions are: (lll)r||(011)a [112]r[011]a [2] Mehl and Derge worked with a range of iron-nickel alloy compositions centered about 30 pct nickel. They concluded that when the transformation takes place near room temperature or above, relationship [l] holds, but if the same specimen is made to transform at -195°C, relationship [2] obtains;intermediate temperatures evidently produced a combination of these two relationships. Sachs and co-worker~,1,7 as well as Nishiyama,3 have proposed transformation mechanisms for martensite formation.* Both of the mechanisms picture the transformation as initiated by shearing movements along the octahedral [Ill] plane of austenite, followed by suitable expansion and contraction to complete the transformation. These mechanisms have been described and commented upon by Mehl, Barrett, and Smith,8 Mehl and Derge,4 Wassermann,2 and others, and generally accepted by investigators in this field. Greninger and Troiano9 have recently published the results of a detailed study of the shapes and orientation habits of martensite crystals in plain-carbon and nickel steels. They found that, contrary to previous assumptions, martensite plates form not along the octahedral planes but along austenite planes of very high indices; these results were in line with those of previous studies of martensite reactions in nonferrous alloy systems by Greninger and coworkers.6,10 Greninger and Troiano concluded that the transformation theories of Kurdjumow and Sachsl and of Nishiyama3 are untenable. Phragmén11 reached a similar conclusion. EXPERlMENTAL METHODS The object of this particular study was the evaluation of (1) lattice relationship between austenite and martensite, and (2) relationship between the martensite lattice and the martensite plate. The technique used for solving these problems was similar to that used by Greninger6 on martensitic structures in 8 copper-aluminum alloys. Briefly, the method consists of grinding and polishing a specimen on a surface parallel to an individual martensite plate and thus exposing a single martensite crystal for an area of l to 3 mm. The orientation of this exposed martensite crystal is then determined by means of a back-reflection Laue X ray pattern.12 Another pattern is obtained from the matrix crystal, and a stereo-graphic plot of data from these two patterns then provides the solution to the problem. It is necessary to repeat this process on several crystals in order to determine whether or not the solution is unique.

Much attention and publicity has been given, during recent years, to grinding, classification, flotation, and thickening. The various technical papers, and symposiums held to discuss these important phases of milling, have contributed to a better understanding of the fundamental principles and operating variables involved. Another important part of milling— to the flotation operator—is a treatment step to which frequently too little attention is given—"conditioning," or the treatment the ground mineral pulp receives before it enters the flotation machines. "Conditioning" is a hackneyed and frequently misused term, commonly employed to describe the pretreatment of surfaces of minerals in ore pulps or mill products prior to froth flotation. In general, such pretreatment is for the purpose of changing the flotation characteristics of these mineral sur- faces to enable them to respond in some desired predetermined manner when subjected to flotation. Taggartl states that the function of conditioning is "either to insure selective collector coating of one mineral species while another species is not; or to take such steps as will compensate for departure therefrom." As 0. C. Ralston has stated? ... we are still faced with the fact that some mineral particles are water-avid, others air-avid, and that by properly modifying them they may be enhanced or diminished in desirable or undesirable avidity. Coatings on minerals must still be assumed to fall into three classes: (1) a coating of immiscible oil, (2) a layer of adsorbed substance, (3) a chemically produced coating. It is submitted that the process of preparing mineral surfaces for subsequent flotation treatment should take into consideration physical as well as chemical means for altering the normal flotation response of the mineral surfaces. A more descriptive word than "conditioning" is needed to designate broadly these procedures. The minerals in many ores cannot be made to respond in a normal manner to usual methods of "conditioning" with selectivity modifying reagents, until they have been cleansed, or interfering slimes and soluble salts have been removed from the ore. Therefore, it appears important to include under the general subject of "conditioning" a discussion of the purposes, methods used, and some of the advantages of these pretreatment steps. This is dealt with under the subject heading " Initial Treatment of Mineral Surfaces and Ore Pulps." Under this broader interpretation, the methods employed for treating mineral surfaces to alter their flotation characteristics may be divided into three general classes: 1. Physical methods.

It has been proposed1 on the basis of slip and flow that the ideal deformation texture of drawn wire for face-centered cubic metals is a (111) direction parallel to the wire axis. Under these considerations, an intermediate [loo] texture is permissible but should eventually change to the stable [Ill] orientation. This theory does not explain why copper and its alloys containing up to about 30 pct nickel, 5 pct zinc and 1 pct aluminum were found to have a double [Ill], [100] texture, while alloys with at least 8 pct zinc and 2 pct aluminum developed essentially a single [Ill] texture.1,2 It does suggest, however, that the [loo] component of the former alloys should disappear with additional deformation.3 Some evidence exists to support this suggestion. Howald4 reported that annealed copper wire previously drawn 93.8 pct and 98.5 pct developed a single [Ill] texture. Since, in wire, the drawn and annealed textures are similar, these wires probably had a single [Ill] deformation texture before annealing. In addition, although cold rolled polycrystalline copper and 80-20 brass were found to form different types of pole figures,5,6 single crystals of these metals when rolled from the stable (110) [112] orientation were found to produce essentially the same polo figure.7.8 It may be, therefore, that while the addition of solute elements changes the path by which the final texture is obtained, the final texture is not changed. Experimental Results The wires remaining from the previous investigation1 already drawn about 50 pct reduction in diameter were further drawn to 86 pct and then to 96.4 pct total reduction in diameter. The textures were determined after these stages by transmission X ray photograms taken with a copper K-alpha beam rotated 0 degrees toward the wire axis. It was found that the ratio of the [111].] and [100] intensities of the double texture in copper and its alloys containing 0.94 pct aluminum, 30.70 pct nickel, 2.61 pct zinc and 4.99 pct zinc increased from about 3:l for the 50 pct reduction to about 9:l for the 86 pct reduction. After 96.4 pct reduction, these wires exhibited essentially a single [lll] texture. Summary Thus, the drawn wire deformation texture of copper and its alpha solid solution alloys containing aluminum, nickel or zinc is essentially a single [Ill] texture as predicted by theoretical considerations of slip and flow.' For copper and its alloys containing up to about 1 pct aluminum, 5 pct zinc and at least 30 pct nickel, an intermediate [loo] component is found after about 50 pct reduction in diameter, but disappears after about 95 pct reduction in diameter. For alpha solid solution alloys containing at least about 2 pct aluminum and 8 pct zinc the single [Ill] texture is developed considerably more easily and is found after about 50 pct reduction in diameter. The accompanying Fig 1 is a graphical scheme of intermediate accuracy for expediting interconversions of mol, weight, and volume percents. This chart consists of a family of curves of mol or atomic or volume percent plotted against weight percent, each curve in the family providing for a certain ratio of molecular or atomic weights or densities. Thus, the whole range of variations is presented in a very familiar format, and the conversion is effected simply by choosing the proper curve and reading off the required values. An entire series of conversions for a given binary system can be found by following the appropriate curve. It is interesting to examine the analytical geometry of the plots. The curves, which must fit into a square and all join at the 0 and 100 pet points, may be shown to be hyperbolas with their centers on the extension of the diagonal of the square which they intersect. Multiplying out the expression x A atomic fraction of A = y = ------ where x is the weight fraction of A, and A and B are atomic weights, we get xy+A/By- A/Bxy=x Upon rotating and translating axes and avoiding imaginaries, it is found that the angle of rotation is —45°, the origin moves upv2/2 units andv2/2(A/B+1/A/B-1) units to the right, and the standard form is Thus the curves are equilateral hyperbolas, their centers are units away from their intersection with

This report describes the progress made in the research work on the development of a new method for preparing lower-cost titanium tetrachloride and preparing titanium oxide pigment. One of the requirements for the commercial production of ductile titanium in the process used by the Bureau of Mines is a source of lower-cost titanium tetrachloride. The production of ductile titanium by a modification of the Kroll1 process, recently developed by the Bureau of Mines, requires such a source of lower-cost titanium tetrachloride to make it commercially feasible. This report describes the progress of work done at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Missouri, on the development of a new method for preparing titanium tetrachloride. During the course of this research a new method for preparing pigment-grade titanium oxide was developed. At present, the price of technical-grade titanium tetrachloride is $0.32 a pound, which makes the price of the contained titanium $1.28 a pound.2 In addition, the titanium tetrachloride must be purified further before it is suitable for processing into metal, thus making its cost still higher.3 There were 8,562 tons of rutile produced in the United States in 1947, which was 900 tons in excess of that consumed. In addition there were 13,937 tons in various stocks, exclusive of the stocks in the Government strategic stock pile. No estimates of the domestic production of rutile are given for any of the prewar years. However, in 1939, 442 tons of rutile were imported as compared to 14,307 tons in 1947. One of the reasons for the large increase in the production of rutile is the working of the Florida beach sands for ilmenite, during which a considerable amount of rutile is produced as a by-product. It would be of value to determine methods for utilizing the excess production of rutile. The Arkansas titanium deposits in Hot Spring County produced commercial-grade rutile concentrates from 1933 to 1942. These were sold mainly to England, Germany, and Russia.
