Prof. Henry M Howe, New York: It is extremely probable that this efflorescence of silica is due to the liquation either of silicon or of a silicide, and the subsequent oxidation of the silicon to silica. As Mr. Fackenthal says, it is very hard to see why silicon should liquate from an iron containing so little silicon, and it seems more probable that some silicide of some volatile element has liquated, and has dissociated on reaching the air, and that the volatile element has volatilized, leaving the silicon to oxidize to silica. The volatile elements present which might thus liquate in combination with the silicon are sulphur, zinc, and lead. It is hard to see why sulphide of silicon should have liquated from an iron containing so little of either sulphur or silicon. At first, one naturally thinks that either the zinc or the lead present in this furnace might have liquated as silicide. (communication to the Secretary): It has always appeared to me that each coalseam has its peculiar character or habit, due to the conditions of its formation, by virtue of which it is either persistent or variable in its section over extended areas. One seam will hold its thickness, chemical character, number and position of partings, beds of slate, etc., over a large area, while another will be found to vary in some of these characteristics every few feet. As the position of the outcrop is an accident of the topography, depending on folding and erosion which have taken place since the bed was formed, no one opening in the outcrop, or, in fact, anywhere else, can supply reliable evidence as to the general character of the seam. To determine the character of an untried seam, a number of sections are necessary from widely separated points, in order to show such variations as may exist. Secretary's Note.—In printing this paper in the present volume, the figures given in the pamphlet edition have been brought more nearly up to date, the product of 1899 being in many instances inserted. Iron-Ore Resources. In a paper presented to the Institute in 1897,* I discussed the iron-resources of the United States as then developed, calling attention to some principal sources upon which other countries depended. The following statement will give a general idea of the amounts, as compiled from the latest official records, of ores won, and metal produced, in the nations which are important contributors to the world's output. Unfortunately these are not all contemporaneous, since in some countries the statistics do not appear until after one or more years. The statement covers not only pig-iron and iron-ore, but also manganese-ore —the manganese mined being principally used in the production of spiegeleisen or ferro-manganese, and these alloys being generally included in the pig-iron output. In discussing Mr. Keller's paper, I quoted the results obtained by Mr. Allan Gibb, correctly crediting them to Mr. Gibb, with due reference to the report in which they were published. But in the table immediately following, and in my further remarks, following the table, I find that, by some clerical or other error which I cannot, after the lapse of time, explain, I spoke of Mr. Gibb as Mr. "Dean"—a metallurgist who had written on a related subject, but not on the point I was discussing. In short, my reference throughout was to the work of Mr. Gibb; and by reading a Gibb " for a Dean " in all places on pp. 832 and 835 where the latter name occurs, my remarks will be brought into accordance with my intention, and with the facts.

(communication to the Secretary): In presenting some notes on the "Heine's Blue Test" Mr. Smith expresses a preference for fresh standards and a cheaper bottle; but this is rather a reversion to the old method, since I devised in 1897 the newer method of preparation and preservation of' permanent standards, which were not used with any success in the original method. Many busy western assayers no doubt value a method for preparing a permanent set of standards in air-tight glass-stoppered bottles, whose use brings the method as near perfection as one could desire as regards rapidity of color-reading and avoidance of unnecessary work. Mr. Smith notes that his color-readings were compared with an electrolytic assay of another ore-sample, and that my electrolytic assays were made on the " blue test" solution from colorimetric assay. During the past two years the writer has been traveling in the Lewis and Clarke timber reserve, locating the boundaries and reference-monuments for the Geological Survey. The Lewis and Clarke reserve lies in northwestern Montana. The region is very mouutainous, the main range of the Rocky mountains passing through it, dividing the waters of the Columbia and Missouri rivers. The mountains do not rise in one important and well-defined backbone, but in a series of parallel ridges, striking nearly northwest and southeast. Between these ridges, and, in general, parallel to them, are the drainage-systems. Beginning at the west, the rivers are the Swan, emptying into the Flathead lake, the South fork and the Middle fork of Flathead river, both emptying into the main Flathead river, which, in turn, empties into the lake of that name. The continental divide passes through the reserve from the southeast corner to the middle of the northern boundary, and the stream of most importance east of it is the Sun river, which heads well toward the north, and flows southeasterly and then eastward, and, emerging from the mountains, flows across the great plain of' the Missouri river. The southern boundary is drained by the Big Blackfoot river, flowing westward; the northern boundary, by the several branches of the Flathead river. The accompanying map (which is only a sketch, and does not represent the final work of the Geological Survey in this forest-reserve) shows clearly the parallel systems of drainage and ridges. "The Ararat Terminal Station (ARTS) is located 190km to the north-west of Melbourne, approximately 1.7km to the north of Elmhurst Township in the Pyrenees region of western Victoria, Australia. The site occupies an area of approximately 7.2 hectare of farmland. The electricity generated by the Ararat Wind Farm is directed to the ARTS terminal station before being connected to the grid. The ARTS structural design includes more than 180 steel yard support structures, three 25m-tall gantry ‘A’ frames, three modular control room buildings, a precast transformer bund, precast fire wall structures and related foundation design. Innovative driven engineered glue laminated timber (glulam) piles in a cruciform shape were used to reduce the foundation construction time, cost and the amount of concrete used in the project. It is the first time that engineered timber piles made from farmed Australian pine trees have been used in a large-scale environmentally-friendly project. Durability of the timber was achieved by H5 treatment and the use of reinforced concrete pile caps to protect the cruciform timber piles at the ground line. A pile-driving sequence was developed based on field trials. The lateral load capacities of the piles were estimated using engineering principles and from full-scale tests in the field. This paper provides an overview of details of engineered timber cruciform piles, durability of timber piles, design information, pile construction procedures, pile-driving procedures, the testing protocol, test results and validation. The test results were compared with predictions from several methods. In addition, potential future applications of similar systems in other infrastructure projects, and opportunities for future improvements are discussed. The mother lode, or mineralized belt, at Angels, in Calaveras county, California, is 3 miles wide. At least, a region of that width has been, and is being, prospected which has shown considerable mineralization. The lode proper divides into three lodes, or groups of veins, at this point. At the present time, the mine-owner has a number of patent crushers to choose from, when contemplating the erection of a mill; and a number of new ones are yearly brought to notice. We all know that the stamp-mill is the old standard; but several of the patent crushers, especially of the roller-type, are not without their merits. Having had a working experience, extending over a period of four years, with the " Bryan roller quartz-mill," working alongside of stamp-batteries, I take pleasure in giving to the members of the Institute the benefit of my experience with this mill.*

The protaxis of the North American continent consists, as is well known, of a large V-shaped area of Archæan rocks, which lie for the most part in the Dominion of Canada, and occupy an area of not less than 2,031,000 square miles. The western limit of this area extends from 'Lake Superior in a northwesterly direction to the Arctic Ocean, the southern is found along the Lower St. Lawrence as far as Labrador. A minor area, spoken of as the Adirondack region of northern New York, has a somewhat broken connection with the main body in a narrow band of igneous rock, which crosses the Upper St. Lawrence where it leaves Lake Ontario. The ancient crystallines are also presumably beneath all the later sediments, hut the above brief description outlines their principal exposures. This great rock-complex consists, for the most part, of a series of gneisses, which present great variations in both structure and composition. In certain sections areas of gneisses of the general composition of granite, and remarkably uniform in character, prevail. They consist largely, if not exclusively, of crystalline rocks in which a banding or foliation has been induced by pressure. These rocks constitute the basal member of the Laurentian system, and by later writers have been referred to as the Ottawa gneiss. In other and quite extended areas, gneisses, regarded by many as composed of altered sediments, are associated with crystalline limestones, quartzites, and much injected igneous matter. To this series the term Grenville has been applied. Both of these series of gneisses are penetrated by various igneous masses, of which the most important are great intrusioiis of several members of the gabbro family, such as anortho-sites, norites, pyroxenites, and gabbros proper; the whole form-

As the work carried on by this Company, of which the writer has been in charge for the past two years, is somewhat unique, the following account of it may be of interest, and, on that account, is offered to the Institute without any attempt to claim this practice as the best. Mines. The mines supplying ore to the Company arc situated in three groups: the Guanaco field,.about 80 miles N.E. of the port of Taltal (lat. 25" S., long. 70" 30' W. of Greenwich); the Sierra Overa, about 63 miles S.W. of Taltal; and Paranao, about 42 miles due N. of Taltal (12 miles N. of the small town of Paposo, once famous for its copper-output). Guanaco. This field lies in the center of an absolutely waterless mountainous desert, where not a sign of vegetation can be found for miles. The dryness is such that ivory and horn crack and open, while raw-hide must be used in place of leather, which -would become worthless in a very short time. Water is brought about 21 miles by piping from the Cordillera, but only in small quantities, and costs in the Guanaco $7 (= $1.78 gold) per cubic meter. For twenty years it has been my work to watch and record progress in both the technical and the commercial branches of mining engineering in the wide sense in which it is represented by our Institute. While you who have been actively engaged in our profession have made history, a few of us have attempted to be the historians and have been kept keenly on the qui vive to follow the developments of so broad a field. One so employed may be pardoned if he ask you to pause for the unusual purpose of looking backward, that you may measure what you and others have done, and that the younger men may gather inspiration from the work accomplished by their elders and their predecessors. It is not so long since that the commercial management dominated our industries. Bred in the school of science, which seeks its reward in establishing the truth, our engineers were sometimes indifferent to trade conditions and requirements. Much of that feeling has disappeared, and the engineer recognizes that it is his mission to apply the achievements of science to a useful commercial end. On the other hand, business men now understand that the utilization of our natural resources and the production of articles for consumption is impossible without the intervention of the engineer. They must co-operate, unless, indeed, the two functions are combined in one man —a rare but powerful combination. Now the final measure of success of both is the cost sheet on the one hand and the expansion of markets on the other, so closely interwoven, so mutually interdependent. There is one cardinal feature, however, which characterizes the engineer's work—namely, the permanence of his achievements. Every improvement, particularly when it has been recorded in such lasting form as a paper in the Transactions of our societies—

"This paper sets out a simplified approach by which the practical foundation designer can undertake the relevant calculations to satisfy the requirements for deep foundation design in seismic areas. The following matters are dealt with:a. Design issues that should be addressed;b. Pile design for axial loading, including the possible effects of liquefaction;c. Pile design for lateral loading where liquefaction does not occur;d. Pile design for lateral loading where liquefaction does occur;e. Measures to mitigate against liquefaction effects.The paper is a modified version of a paper presented in 2013 to the 19th NZGS GeotechnicalSymposium, Queenstown, New Zealand.1. INTRODUCTIONConsideration of the effects of earthquakes and seismic loadings is an increasingly important aspect of modern foundation design, and most contemporary standards have a mandatory requirement for such consideration. For example, the Australian Piling Code, AS 2159-2009, states that “a pile shall be designed for adequate strength, stiffness and ductility under load combinations including earthquake design actions”. However, the methods by which such considerations can be undertaken are generally not set out in the standards, and many approaches have been utilized, ranging from very simplistic methods to extremely complex computer analyses. Accordingly, there appears to be scope for an approach that is soundly based but which is neither too simplistic nor too complex.Poulos (1989) has suggested that there are three categories of analysis and design, as follows:1. Category 1: empirical methods.2. Category 2: simplified but soundly-based methods.3. Category 3: more comprehensive methods that are soundly-based, and site-specific.The objective of this paper is to set out a systematic but simplified approach which falls into Category 2 above, and by which the foundation designer can undertake the relevant analyses to satisfy the foundation design requirements for seismic regions. Emphasis is placed on methods that do not require “black box” software or which employ complex soil models in which the physical meaning of the parameters is unclear."
